night life San Francisco’s nightlife is as diverse as San Francisco itself, and each district’s selection of bars, clubs and lounges has its own distinct flavor. For electronic music clubs, hip-hop or chill art lounges, head to San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, while the artsy Mission district is primed for everything from dive bar hopping to intimate dance space, an alternative to the city’s larger clubs. On the flipside, the Marina District sports decidedly slicker (though no less debaucherous) bars. Gay-friendly bars and clubs exist all over the city, with the Castro, SoMa, and Polk Street areas leading the way. While out to dinner with work colleagues, Lucy noticed her in-laws at a nearby table and walked over to say hello. After chatting for a moment, the father-in-law asked Lucy who was babysitting her kids. “Your son,” she replied. “And he’s not babysitting.” When my wife, Brandy, shared that anecdote—courtesy of her BFF—I was just beginning a three-week stint as a stay-at-home dad. There had been a few consecutive days here and there, but never before had I taken care of our sons, Jackson, 5, and Tanner, 3, for an extended period of time while Brandy worked. I had all manner of father-son activity scheduled. Frolicking through beach surf. Running through sprinklers. Napping in a hammock. (May I recommend the Greeting Card Guide to Parenting?) During those three weeks, I was repeatedly asked how the babysitting was going. Who can blame them? Nobody uses “father” as a verb, and if you do, you’re either in a DNA laboratory or a Dickens novel. Mother? Now there’s an action verb. A quick look at the Merriam-Webster
Changing that perception will require a lot of heavy lifting by us fathers, as we’re in a hole that’s only getting deeper. Last year the National Fatherhood Initiative released The One Hundred Billion Dollar Man, a study detailing how much the federal government spends every year assisting father-absent families ($99.8 billion to be exact). I certainly feel I’m doing my part, but that doesn’t mean everything is by the book. It’s easy to see why father and babysitter are used interchangeably: Both contingents often overlook some of the nuts-and-bolts aspects of child care. During my term as “manny,” food groups were skipped (it’s not you, whole grains, it’s me), and the TV was always tuned in to the most age-appropriate channel. (Fatal Attraction has a number of great life lessons: forgiveness, resolving conflict, how to braise rabbit.) Moms, on the other hand, don’t miss a beat. In fact, I sincerely believe one of the side effects of pregnancy is a Ph.D. Save for one surreal meltdown (which included a balloon popping and two violently weeping boys wearing last Easter’s bunny ears), we had a

Meanwhile, traditional churches are watching helplessly as their members defect en masse to the Pentecostal churches. Just a week ago in Kenya, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru’s Jesus is Alive Ministries, a Pentecostal church, received Maina Njenga. Njenga is
not your normal Sunday service convert but the leader of the Mungiki, an ancestral worship “sect� complete with a political and economic arm that has been linked to brutal killings in Kenya and Mafia-like extortion rings. Njenga’s triumphal march — followed by thousands of Mungiki adherents who had suddenly ‘seen the light’ — into Bishop Wanjiru’s Nairobi church happened a day after the State dropped murder charges against him. Evangelical church services are characterised by a spiritually charged atmosphere, energetic
singing, dancing and passionate prayer. Sermons are delivered by charismatic pastors, some of them highly educated and modelling their preaching along the lines of American gospel greats such as TD Jakes. The youth and a considerable chunk of senior citizens find Pentecostal church services more exciting than the subdued and even staid worship marked by silent congregations listening to soporific music that the first European missionaries brought here. “Africans want things done powerfully,� says Rev Nathan Samwini
of the Christian Council of Ghana. “You meet white evangelicals from America — they behave like Africans. They are vibrant, everything is done with vigour.� Material and spiritual success is a core element of their message which, on a continent where a significant section of the population is poor, attracts a huge number of people. “African realities make them open to faith,� says Luis Bush, a renowned evangelist and a cousin of former US President George Bush. “When a person is in that kind of need, it makes them much more
open to external relief and belief than if you have comfort. Poverty really opens you up to spirituality,� he adds. Promoting a pragmatic and entrepreneurial approach to Christian life, Pentecostal evangelists attract young impressionable people from urban areas and dissatisfied older generations from the mainstream denominations. This is aided by the fact that their church meetings tend to be joyous fanfares with loud music and dancing reminiscent of festive carnivals. The sermons are crafted along popular themes such as miracle healing, financial breakthrough, finding marriage partners and freedom from demonic bondage — all based on a literal interpretation of Bible stories. Most underplay the hallmarks of traditional Christianity such as humility, submission and meekness. Twenty-nine-year-old Charles Kasibante, a former Catholic who joined the Miracle Centre Church in Kampala, says he feels more spiritual. “I was hanging out in the wrong places with the wrong people. Then in 1994 I went to a ‘born-again church’. The charismatic preaching, the dancing and the singing appealed to me.�
Born-again Christians According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, about 17 million Africans described themselves as born-again Christians in 1970. Today the figure has soared to more than 400 million, which accounts for roughly 19 per cent of the continent’s population. But as the fire of evangelism spreads across the continent, so does greed and materialism. This expansion has led to the emerge n c e o f m e g a - c h u rc h e s , sanctuaries visited by thousands of worshippers every week, and

Their role models are American ‘prosperity gospel’ preachers like Morris Cerullo, Robert Tilton, Creflo Dollar, John Avanzini and Marilyn Hickey.
The glamour and glitz associated with these successful evangelists has greatly increased the number of those heeding the call to serve as ministers, which has led to an unprecedented multiplication and fragmentation of evangelical churches in recent decades. Winning members is a cut-throat business employing all forms of publicity, the most preferred being televangelism. To beat competition, some of the preachers claim to have all sorts of miracle working powers besides branding their establishments with catchy names. House of Harvest, Mountain of Fire, Prayer Palace and Miracle Centre are just a few examples. In Kenya alone, almost 100 churches submit registration requests everyday to the Registrar of Societies. Some are eventually registered as the pastors’ private property, exclusively co-owned with spouse and family, which explains the numerous protracted church ownership tussles that sometimes end up in court. A 10-nation survey by US-based Pew Forum indicated that Kenya was the most evangelical African nation with 56 per cent of its Christians being born-again, beating the more populous South Africa and Nigeria at 34 and 26 per cent respectively. The concept of being “born-again� used to be very unpopular with the working class but these new Pentecostal movements and mega-churches have glamourised it by recruiting young urban professionals, students and high ranking government officials through emotional messages and Christianisation of secular music genres such as rock, hip-hop and reggae that are popular with the youth. With a majority of its estimated population of 130 million people languishing in poverty, it is not surprising that Nigeria is the largest centre of Evangelical Christian faith in Africa. Judging from the glamorous and luxurious lives of some of its pastors, the Pentecostal faith is a veritable gold mine for some people in that country. Besides having tens of thousands of churches, Nigeria boasts some of the wealthiest men of the cloth in the world. Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo was for a long time considered the richest Nigerian evangelist until his formidable income supply was nipped in the bud. Donning highend designer silk suits and shoes, he ministered in London where his Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) was based. He is
said to have made so much money that it attracted the attention of the British tax collector, at which point he fled back to Nigeria where he operates from a modest premise in Lagos.
Cheerful givers The success of these leaders and their ministries is owed to congregations inspired by the often quoted Biblical injunction that “cheerful givers never lack� besides selling recorded sermons, holding seminars, conferences, mammoth crusades, establishing learning institutions and writing motivational books. After establishing the spiritual dominance in their respective countries, Pentecostal leaders are gradually shifting their focus to setting a social agenda through assumption of political power. This is achieved either by seeking favour from political leaders by promising to vote as a block or gunning for public office banking on their followers to elect them. During the Ugandan general elections in 2006, most of the country’s born-again church leaders, under their umbrella body, the National Fellowship of BornAgain Churches, held massive prayer conferences and rallies at Namboole and Lugogo stadia where they endorsed President Yoweri Museveni as their preferred candidate, terming him “God’s gift to Uganda�. This was in contrast to the traditional denominations which, under the Ugandan Joint Christian Council (UJCC,) openly criticised the amendment of the country’s constitution to give the President a third term. But the Pentecostal’s move was no surprise since they boast among their members a huge contingent of high-ranking government officials led by First Lady Janet Museveni, army bigwigs like Elly Tumwine and Aronda Nyakairima, former Cabinet Ministers Dr Nsaba Buturo and Ezra Suruma, all of whom claim to be “saved� or balokole. President Museveni is himself a common figure at crusades, having presided over the opening of the grand Miracle Centre Cathedral in Kampala and being on record as saying that he preached the resurrection of Jesus Christ to Libya’s Col Muammar Gaddafi, a Muslim, during a continental gathering of Heads of States. The Kelly Wearstlerdesigned space (she’s the knockout judge on Bravo’s Top Design) boasts her signature hint of Hollywood glam, but with a Miami edge. Sunny yellow-leather seats with backs that look like shells surround low tables for those who want to snack on tapas-style dishes heavy on raw fish. Walls are covered in latticework and columns in potted plants, hinting at the garden space that’s just around the corner — where the real drama is. I wish I could say the long and skinny pool
surrounded by marble was the centerpiece, but as lovely as it is, it pales in comparison to the view of Biscayne Bay and South Beach to the east and downtown cityscapes to the north and west. Vines drape Romanesque columns, giving this alfresco space a European feel. THE MOOD Come early and you’ll find a light, lively after-work crowd that clears out by 8-ish, followed by late-nighters who watch starry skies from poolside loungers and listen to good music. Crawford expanded the condo’s entertainment space and its depth by relocating the dining room to the breakfast area. Mocha-hued wool area rugs anchor the two distinct sitting areas, which feature low-profile furnishings in neutral and off-white tones. Track lighting shines on the “wave wall,” which is flanked by lighted wood-clad art niches. Wood is also repeated in the pilasters of the main wall. FDR NUMBER FIVE 2008

R
evered for architecture that is predominantly tropical in nature, Cooper Johnson Smith Architects was a natural choice to design a coastal abode just the way the clients envisioned. “The client had seen some of our work that was EnglishCaribbean style,” Stephen Smith recalls, “which was what she wanted to do. She brought in boxes and boxes of images that she’d been collecting over the years.” So the architect set out to bring those images to life, creating a tropical estate on Clearwater Beach. “It’s really evocative of the architecture you would see on islands throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean that were settled by either British loyalists leaving this country or by British aristocracy who were moving to the islands to begin plantations,” Smith explains. And yet the architecture also pays homage to local history, an upscale version of the homes Smith admired as a kid. “I grew up going to the beach in Carlouel; my grandparents had a house there,” he reminisces. “There was a handful of old houses—quintessential gulf coast beach cottages—some of which are still there. Those cottages were also things that I drew inspiration from.”

Making an entrance Whether it’s a knock or a chime that announces visitors to a home, the front door stands as the introduction to the house. Doors greet guests with a warm welcome, an elegant statement, or an impressive salutation. This architectural component fulfills several functions: it encloses the interior, divides public and private spaces, withstands the elements, and establishes the design of the home. Despite basic similarities—a slab on hinges with a knob—door design is as diverse as the home’s inhabitants. 12

Among the abundance of Mediterranean Revival homes in Florida, various styles, periods, and locales offer an array of approaches to the characteristic arch. At a residence in Bonita Springs, designer Sherri DuPont of Collins & DuPont seamlessly echoes a classic entryway with Corinthian columns, noting, “The door repeats the full arch, but also intensifies the shape by adding an arched sidelight surrounding the door to allow light into the entryway.�

Then comes the final third. It’s a nightmare and probably not the sort of nightmare first-time director Gil Kenan intended. The film explodes into the kind of “Please stop!”
Come back, “Cars.”
I was too harsh. Your adrenalized platitudes are nothing compared to the monstrosity that is “Monster House.” The picture is yet another entry in the if-you-animate-it-they-will come (“they” being parents and kids) summer sweepstakes. Not only are “Cars”“Over the Hedge” and “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” still hanging around, but the next few weeks bring “The Ant Bully” and “Barnyard.”
However, this isn’t even cuddly animals/cars/ bugs animation. Executive producer Robert Zemeckis has apparently decreed “Monster House” be made in the same creepy style as “The Polar Express” (which he directed), wherein the actors are so faithfully replicated you keep wondering why didn’t they just go with live action instead of this icky, offputting approach. At any rate, “Monster House” is essentially a teched-up haunted house story about a
decrepit wreck of a house squatting ominously on an otherwise sunny suburban street. Things (kites, tricycles) -- and eventually people -- disappear when they get too close. Which may -- or may not -- explain why the crumbling edifice is zealously guarded by a misanthropic geezer named Nebbercracker (voice by Steve Buscemi). Everybody in the neighborhood figures Nebbercracker is just a cantankerous old man and his house just a poster-child for tear-downs everywhere.
