nightlife

It’s all in the Numbered Name:

Club 205 New York by Luiza Oleszczuk Ever since Studio 54 conquered the spoiled hearts of New Yorkers in the late 70s, a cult for numbers in the venue name evolved, and gave birth to such swanky havens as Chloe 81, 230 Fifth, 1 Oak, 101 Lounge, and, of course, Club 205—which evokes retro New York nightlife most of all due to its association with the legendary Factory. Either lounge and club owners went completely lazy on creativity, or there is indeed some magnetic power attracting chic patrons to nightclubs, lounges and bars named after addresses. Adding to the packed nightlife scene of the Lower East Side- which begins to resemble Six Flags of nighttime debauchery-- Club 205 offers a hip and 6 / Scen / Promotional Issue

hipster-friendly décor, and an environment worthy of showing off your recent Marc Jacobs splurge. The owner, Serge Becker, knows how to add an edge to a lounge and set it apart from the cookie cutter style of the lower Manhattan, as proved by his two popular bars—La Esquina and The Box. At Club 205 he used the existing vibe of what used to be a rock dive, upgrading the main room with small, wooden box tables, bright orange booths and a state-ofthe-art sound system that does not go to waste hosting the biggest personalities of the off-mainstream spin-ology (specializing in disco and house). The downstairs stage at the club welcomes local bands every once in a blue moon. The walls of the low-ceilinged basement den are covered with personal ads scribbled in black paint and bringing to mind a room

of a disturbed Goth teenager. The fauxshabby décor goes as far as leaks on the walls and ceilings (yup, those are there on purpose). Meanwhile, the file cabinet bar, foil elements and silver-painted exposed-brick walls bring to mind a re-vamped industrial loft in Brooklyn and constitute a perfect homage to Andy Warhol and his Factory. Who said there is no hunger for art these days? On the practical side, unless you are good with name-dropping, you’re going to spend some time on the wrong side of the velvet rope at this NYC club. It takes patience to be able to mingle with the highly fashioned-up crowd of socialites that put Club 205 on their list of worthy joints. The handsomest specimen flock in lines of high heels and dark pants in order to show off their Bebe dresses or Zara shirts inside. Booze-wise, you can count on one of the bottled beers gracing the door-less refrigerators behind the bar, or a wellmixed concoction served by a staff of bartending pros. The amount of ice varies depending on the night of the week and the size of the crowd, but, overall, the drinks are pretty basic (read: vodka and soda), which means you are likely to catch quite a kick upon leaving the bar at New York’s Club 205.

profile With Serge Becker of La Esquina and the Box involved, the reinvention of former rock dive 6s and 8s was bound to be high-concept: The upstairs re-creates Warhol’s Factory via tinfoil on brick, gunmetal filing cabinets under the bar, and faux water damage on the walls and ceiling. On any given day the Warholesque spirit is kept alive by a raised D.J. pulpit populated with the likes of Kid America and Jamal Ali and mismatched vintage furniture filled with fashion folk, Japanese hipsters, and skateboarding chuggers of Colt 45s, here to gawk at transgressive artists like Dan Colen, Ryan McGinley, and Neck Face (who graffiti-ed the building’s exterior). Meanwhile the Purple Group (of Cielo) brings a more Euro crowd to a low-ceilinged, candlelit basement where plywood walls are covered in text from Craigslist personals ads and dark electronica from outfits like Rub and Tug keeps everyone dancing (and cruising) until 4 a.m. — Daniel Maurer

Extra While you don’t need to buy a bottle to score one of the mod chairs or the u-booths, expect to wait at the velvet rope during peak times unless you know which names to drop.

Not Your Average Joe’s entrepreneur shares success tips By Beth Perdue

artmouth businessman Steve Silverstein recently addressed a group of business people, students and academics at Bristol Community College, urging aspiring entrepreneurs to surround themselves with good people, get the facts and figures, and know who your customer is. But above all, he stressed, persevere. A successful entrepreneur who founded Not Your Average Joe’s restaurant in 1994, and now operates 16 restaurants from the company’s Middleboro headquarters, Silverstein was at the college for BCC’s Academic Center for Entrepreneurship’s second annual Expo and Awards ceremony which honored three entrepreneurs for their success in the region. “Everything seems so overwhelming. Sit down, figure it out,” he said about the pressures of starting a new venture. “If you persevere, you’ll get there.” A CPA-turned entrepreneur, Silverstein emphasized the importance of accounting. “No matter what people say, it’s about the numbers,” he told an audience of approximately 75 people. Do the research, know your own numbers and know your competition’s numbers, he advised. For the res8 / Scen / Promotional Issue

Silverstein suggested anyone starting a new venture surround themselves with good people and also create a board of advisors. Getting the right people on board is a critical success fac-

tor, he said, even if it’s costly. “You can’t afford a chef that costs $125,000?” he asked. “The real question is, can you afford not to? Can you afford not to have the best people?” “It’s not a place to cut a corner,” he said. Successful entrepreneurs recognized at the event included Matthew Hebert, founder and sole owner of New Bedford-based Precision Orthotics & Prosthetics Technology, Inc who was given the Developing Entrepreneur Award. Originally started as a part time venture in 2003, Hebert has grown the company to a full time practice with two locations and a base of 1,900 patients. “He has brought jobs to the local economy and improves the lives of his patients everyday,” said Joseph Marshall, a BCC board member, 2007 award winner, and this year’s presenter. The Cornerstone Entrepreneur award was presented to Normand Berube, Jr. preisdent of Twin City Electric & Alarms in Fall River. Since he took over the leadership of the company in 2006, Berube has led the company in new directions, streamlining operations by upgrading equipment and facilities, investing in Twin City’s professional image and focusing on visible elements like crisp images of vehicles, uniforms, and specialized web sites to convey a vision to its customers.

Club Rubber happens every other Saturday and is one of the wilder nights out to be had in Orange County. It is held at the Galaxy Theater and each night has a different theme. Past themes have included 70’s disco, Catholic School Girl and 60’s Psychedelica. The music is techno, trance and hip-hop that will keep you on the dance floor all night. The clientele is eccentric, from transvestites to Ecstasydropping club kids. Credit cards accepted at the bar, but you must pay admission charges in cash. Since I don’t really like cool people (that’s right: if I like you, you’re probably good and lame), Club Rubber has always been an exercise in self-loathing. Porn stars with vinyl boots up to their throats? Black Flys peeps? Trust-fund kids? Anybody else who makes their living looking good, and the occasional really hot legal secretary? They all make me feel schlubby, shrimpy and square. Plus, if you’re willing to take three hours out of your life to stand in a line somewhere, I kind of think you’re an idiot, and the only idiots I like are the virtuous Candide/ Forrest Gump blank-slate/retard types who are really hard to find in real life. Oh, and I kind of think you’re a stupid sheep, too. Club Rubber and Pimp ‘n Ho aren’t just big parties. They’ve also become one of the most successful and recognizable brands in the

nightclub industry. Rubber has spawned an empire for Huntington , including a merchandising arm that offers Club Rubber CDs, DVDs and T-shirts. Huntington has taken the success further with his traveling club, One Night Stand (seen locally at Ghostbar and Curve), a tattoo parlor at the Palms, and TV appearances (Rubber is a favorite of the E!’s Wild On series). Now, he’s set his sights on Costa Rica, opening a sushi restaurant called Tsunami and a nightclub called Nacho Daddy.

elegant & impress Is Buddakan a bus depot disguised as a nightclub with a restaurant inside, or is it a restaurant with a night club persona housed inside a garishly designed — Buddha icons along with Renaissance Bacchanal paintings — bus depot? My expectations were of a loud, dance club scene in a large, 16,000-square-feet bi-level space where the food would be showy, but flavorless. I was right about the loud, dance club scene, but I was wrong about the flavorless food. The “Brasserie”is the main dining room on the lower level and the steps can seem steep after a few too many cocktails in the upstairs lounge like the signature Heat, a combination of tequila, Cointreau, and chilled cucumbers. Though they were not steep enough to deter a man from being carried down in his wheelchair on the night I dined there. To fortify yourself after those cocktails don’t hesitate to order some of Buddakan’s superb appetizers like the edamame dumplings, the crab and corn fritters, and most notably, the crispy calamari salad. In fact, you can make your meal out of sharing appetizer — the extensive menu at Buddakan works best for large parties and has the now obligatory “communal”table. nightlife las vegas XS NIGHTCLUB

sexy curves... XS nightclub is the latest dynamic venture for co-owners Victor Drai and Steve Wynn, along with managing partners Jesse and Cy Waits. The 40,000-square foot slice of heaven, located at Encore Las Vegas, features 95 VIP tables, 30 cabanas situated on two levels and daybeds that surround the gorgeous pool located outside XS’s large sliding glass doors. Whether it’s the amazing entrance featuring a breathtaking staircase or the magnificent chandelier situated directly in the middle of the dance floor, you will be blown away with every single piece that makes up XS, Las Vegas’hottest new nightclub. It’s rumored to be one of the most expensive nightclubs ever built, its budget in line with that of an effects-laden Michael Bay action flick or double the payroll of your average NBA franchise, if you believe the hype. In terms of hot-under-the-collar opulence, the new high-end club at Encore is like a cross between Fort Knox, a nude beach, “Caligula” and the jewel-encrusted sheen of a queen’s tiara. It’s decadence defined, like feasting on Dom

Perignon and whipped cream for breakfast. A mammoth, 40,000 square foot indooroutdoor space, which opens on New Year’s Eve, this is the place where ids -- and breasts -- run bare. Inspired by the “sexy curves of the human body,”XS is tailored in rich golds and browns, gleaming like precious metals beneath the sun. The club is awash in dance poles designed to look like lanterns, mirrored mosaics, gold crocodile embossed leather, chandeliers, close to 100 V.I.P. tables and 30 outdoor cabanas. More than 10,000 individual light sources illuminate the club, the focal point of which is a large circular dance floor surrounded by V.I.P. seating. XS also opens to a shimmering, illuminated pool, which features topless sunbathing and comes complete with its own bar. unique to XS is the $10,000 “Ono”cocktail, a blend of Charles Heidsieck Champagne Charlie 1981 and Louis XIII de Remy Martin Black Pearl cognac that includes men’s sterling silver cuff links embossed with a stingray and the XS logo and a woman’s 18-karat white gold chain with a black pearl pendant and XS logo.

BODY ENGLISH NIGHTCLUB

everything you want... Body English - Body English is the new club inside the Hard Rock Hotel, open from Friday to Sunday. This swanky style dance club is one place you don’t want to miss while you are in town. Getting in the front door is a bit tricky, but once you do you’ll be partying with anyone who is anyone in the nightlife scene. Not to mention the abundance of celebrities who constantly come to play making Body English the ultimate VIP experience with tables, bottle service, and even a special VIP room that looks over the dance floor through a secret mirrored wall. This club is by far the best place to end or start your night. I go to every club VIP style, but like any were in Vegas if you don’t have the cash to be a VIP don’t even try!!! On my last trip we

partied there both on Saturday and Sunday night in July. First night was in the down stairs VIP room with a tab of $2,700 for four bottles and shots and on Sunday night up stairs with a booth over looking the main floor… Tab for Sunday night was $3,700… The best thing about having a VIP host is you can ask for what type of girl you wanted and in five minutes they were there and like anything in Vegas if you have the right amount of money you can buy anything!!! Also if you tip the door guys at coed bathroom you can skip the line all night. It’s well worth it; we all know how long the ladies rest room lines get on a hopping night. All in all if you’re trying to be a rock star without actually being one. Party at Body English it’s the Vegas experience you hear about...

so good, so cool... The minimalist approach to this clubs décor leaves room for a good-sized dance floor but those with tables near it might be complaining as their space slowly gets invaded as the night goes on. If you are going to go all out, reserve the tables on the stage – definitely the most elite spot in the club, if not already occupied by a celeb and his/her entourage. nightlife hollywood ca AREA NIGHTCLUB

celeb-tastic hopspots It’s a mod world at Area, whose mid-century modern décor and nightlife pedigree have made it one of L.A.’s most celeb-tastic hotspots. Owned by nightlife impresarios Sam Nazarian and Brent Bolthouse, Area mirrors its clientele: young, beautiful and well-connected. The club’s interior consists of an open layout with white leather Barcelona chairs and wood columns surrounding the dancefloor. Booths line the outdoor portion, which is separated from the interior by sliding glass walls. Cocktail waitresses donning black shift dresses and white knee-high boots deftly navigate through the crowd, which usually consists of the girls from MTV’s “The Hills” and their hangerson. Entrance into Area still remains challenging for those without a hook-up or a double-D cup, so purchasing bottle service is still the best bet, especially for groups of guys. Celebrities, socialites and reality TV divas hook up at this midcentury modern dance club that’s especially popular for fashion industry events. If you don’t look like Lindsay Lohan and you’re not willing to fork over a huge chunk of cash for bottle service, prepare to stand back with the paparazzi because there’s a good chance you won’t make it past the velvet rope. SKYBAR / MONDIAN HOTEL

celeb-tastic hopspots Of all of LA’s celeb hangouts, the bar at the Mondrian Hotel is probably the most infamous. (Britney Spears and Jesse Metcalfe both went on weekend benders here before checking into rehab.) In its heyday, getting into the Skybar was like a rite of passage, but unless they looked like a supermodel or were rolling with Leonardo DiCaprio, there was no way they’d get in much less get to lounge on the poolside bed that overlooks the city. The door policy has since mellowed, though we must warn you: Thursdays are still a tough night to get in. The Mondrian is Ian Schrager’s Sunset Strip creation. Since both Asia de Cuba and Skybar are onsite, this property doesn’t get a whole lot of attention as a hotel. We had to dig deep to get the latest on the hotel portion of this Hollywood property. If you find yourself at Skybar--which always feels exclusive, even during slow nights, when it isn’t that difficult to get into--you will probably be subject to some sort of celebrity sighting. So if you are in town to gawk at celebs, and are willing to shell out plenty of cash to do so, you will be perfectly happy with your stay.

CABANA CLUB

dance with glamour

Among the new breed of trendy “it”clubs, the Cabana Club draws in young Hollywood’s labelconcious crowd with the glamour of old Hollywood. A reflecting pool on the outside patio is circled by palm trees, waterfalls and private cabanas. The inside of the club is no less swanky: it’s got a mahogany bar, dance floor, stage and private booths. The indoor/outdoor setting evokes Old Hollywood with its mixture of tropical and traditional club decor. Lush plants compliment the poolside exterior and hues of brown and gold provide a warm inviting feeling to the lush private cabanas and outdoor seating space. Ornate tiling and whimsical artwork adds a perfect touch to the exterior bar and lounge areas. Guests of the two-tiered indoor area enjoy a darker more traditional club feel with a built in stage and private banquets as well as a chiseled mahogany bar.

“The new Karlsson´s Gold Vodka from Sweden. It is distilled only once, resulting in a slightly earthy, pleasantly vegetal aroma; a clean flavor with hints of sweet nuttiness; and a smooth finish. This is a potato vodka, Sweden´s traditional type of vodka. It is very appealing on the rocks, and it might be shown at its best in a vodka Gibson. How To: Wear Eyebrow Powder Subtly Brush eyebrows first.

After dipping an angled brush into eyebrow powder, control the amount of product you apply by first sweeping the brush against a paper towel or tissue. How to get in shape for summer without spending hours at the gym

By Bianca Consunji

FACE it, with the amount of papers, exams and projects due this month and the next, there’s barely any time for you to sleep, let alone sneak in a workout. However, there’s no escaping the fact that the dog days of summer are coming quickly—and with them, frequent trips to the beach. The problem is, all the cramming you did for your school projects has left you a little soft around the middle, and there’s no way you’re going to the beach with a flabby spare tire (courtesy of late-night snacking and the endless cups of cream-topped Frapuccinos consumed while studying for the midterms). Seaside Slim

interview

from Germany to Tennessee Interview by Michelle Olsen • Photographs by Brian Montoya A license plate in Germany and a town in California are united in a man known as Seaside Slim. He has a sound known as “slap-rock,” and a family tree that is filled with the music that has translated to his original sound. He started out in a Christian rap group named S.Y.S.T.E.M in his mid-twenties and toured every weekend in the summer of 2004. Later they broke up over creative differences and this is opportunity brought him to his sound today.

Q: How would you describe your music?

Q: What was it about that name you liked?

A: “I wanted to try it [music] myself,” said Seaside Slim. “ At first I thought my sound was a fluke. But then people started to say how good it was. The slap-rock comes from me. It’s a combination of everything I like. It’s hard to put me in box.” His album Eclectic will drop later this year, and with songs like “The Dance Floor” it is an album listeners will “slap” to. He says the album title is the perfect definition of his music.

A: “I thought it was cool,” he recalled. “I’ll never forget it.” His grandmother, Janice, on his father’s side, was a daughter of former slaves. Her parents bought land in Seaside and built houses for a place for former slaves and people discriminated against to retreat.

Q: What do you think about what your family has done for people?

Q; Why name the album “Eclectic” ?

A: “ Eclectic means you are drawing from a lot of different music places and I am drawing from a bunch of different genres.” Seaside Slim also has had his own label, Genre Music Group, for five years which he is looking to sign up and coming artists like himself.

Q: What made you start your own label ? A: “I got the idea to start my own label by watching rap artists of the past like Eazy-E and Irv Gotti. I figured I might as well start my own label too,” he said. “We are looking for people who are willing to go outside of the box but their music is very catchy and fresh.” He is looking forward to going on tour and putting together a band.

Q: What makes it better having a band oppose to being solo?

A: “A band changes the whole scene of a concert,” he said. “It’s more like magic with a band. You can change the mood and improvise.” He has been all over the world from Germany to Tennessee,

growing up with a mother in the military but his roots were always in Seaside, Calif. Here is where his grandparents lived, and where he hopes to retire to someday.

Q: What is it about Seaside you like?

A: “I love the ocean. I love the culture. I love the people. I love the smell of the salt water and the fog,” he described. The first part of his name is obvious, the place he calls “home,” Seaside, but the second part was something that has stuck with him since he was 10 years old in Germany and saw a Cadillac with the license plate “Cadillac Slim.”

A: “I think it’s great what they did,” he said “They gave me a big goal to set; to try to something great for my future.” His grandfather, Nathaniel, on his mother’s side adds to his heritage of music. He toured with the likes of Ray Charles and Ike Turner. His mother and father came together to produce one child, one hopeful music prodigy named Seaside Slim. While both have since remarried, Seaside Slim married his wife, Crystal, and had a daughter, who he calls his “biggest fan.” He can already see the music talent in her. “ She sings everyday.” For his future of music making he wants to continue changing the sound of trendy music.

Q: What do you plan on doing next?

A “I want to take the harvest of the music and diversify it,” he explained. “I have all these ideas for these different businesses. I want to open people’s minds. I want the music to be played from California to London.” Check out Seaside Slim on 106kmel.com to hear his music and check for upcoming tour dates at myspace. com/seasideslimmusic scene / Promotional Issue / 31

If you’re not taking Physical Education this sem, chances are, you don’t get a lot of exercise. That, coupled with unhealthy snacking habits, can render your body unfit for all the beach getaways your barkada has planned for the summer. So what’s a student to do? Here’s a list of things you can do to get yourself in shape. You won’t get drastic results, but following our dietand-exercise regimen will help you shape up for the summer without starving yourself or spending hours at the gym.

Exercise Walk to all your classes. If you study in a big campus, refrain from taking your car, a jeep or tricycle from one point to another. You’ll have to move faster so you won’t be late for the next class, so make sure to wear comfortable footwear to school. Bring your own bags. Don’t stash everything in the locker as soon as you get to school so you can get a mini-workout by lifting bags and books. If you usually carry a heavy backpack, distribute the weight by carrying the heavier things; this also lessens the strain on your back. If you’re not self-conscious (and if no one’s looking), subtly do repetitions by lifting the items just as you would lift regular weights at the gym. Take the stairs. Some buildings have elevators, but if you’re not going to go up more than four or five flights, take the stairs— it’s good cardio training and will tone your legs. Study while training. If you’re multimedia-savvy, record your lessons on an audio file in your computer and save it as an mp3 file for your iPod. That way, while walking or running around in your spare time, you can still study— plus, the repetition might make you understand your lessons more.

Diet We don’t recommend students following a strict diet regimen such as the South Beach die. You’ll need the nutrients and calories, so don’t cut down on rice and meat. Instead, assess your daily diet: does it include a venti Starbucks Frapuccino? Keep in mind that cream-topped drinks contain anywhere from 300-600 calories, so if there’s any cutting down to do, trim down on the sweets. If you must have your coffee, opt for low-fat dairy products like two percent milk and non-dairy creamer. Nix the chocolate syrup and sugar sprinkles. A lot of useless calories are consumed while studying. If you regularly munch on chips while going through your notes, try to find healthier alternatives, like tofu chips (the ones from Chimara taste like Doritos) or rice cakes. Trust us, they’re not as gross as they sound. Cut down on cramming. Sure, the occasional all-nighter is fine, but if you get less sleep than you should, you’re screwing your body clock and increasing your chances of gaining weight by boosting your stress levels. Also, staying up means you probably get midnight munchies often, which leads to unburned calories because you’re not active at night. Plan your study sessions right after meals so you don’t constantly reach for junk food.
