Ware Club History

The Club was founded in 1892 and although first called Ware Town soon changed its name to plain Ware FC. This unassuming title makes it probably the shortest named affiliate of the Football Association and has caused problems for programme editors and journalists ever since.

In fact, the Club has been anything but unassuming. It has held senior status from its very beginning, entering the Herts Senior Cup for the first time in 1893, and winning the cup on the first of five occasions in 1899 with a 2-1 win over Hitchin at St Albans. By this time Ware had been instrumental in founding the East Herts League and had won its championship on two of the three times it had been competed for. The club was to win it five more times before moving on to the North Middlesex League in 1907 and then also to the Herts County League in 1908. The Championship of the latter came that season in a three-way play-off against St Albans City and Welwyn.

After the First World War the Club gained a league and cup double with a second Herts County League Championship and a fourth Herts Senior Cup win in 1922. The scenes in Ware when the team returned with the Senior Cup tell us something about the hold that football had on local loyalties at the time. The local paper reported that "Large crowds awaited the return of the special train to Ware, everybody being in high spirits. The Cup was marched through the town in front of a cheering throng." Indeed, it was later recalled that the cup was taken through the town on subsequent nights and that stops were made outside public houses where it was charged with beer before being drained by the crowd.

Shortly after this Ware joined the Spartan League in which they were to enjoy several successes, winning the Division 2(B) Championship in 1926, Division 1 in 1951 with the highest "goals for" total ever achieved by a club in the Spartan League, and the Premier Division in 1952. In these later years the Club also made significant progress in the old Amateur Cup meeting many famous sides on the way. One of these was Hendon, against whom Ware drew their largest attendance of 3,800 in the 1st Round in January 1957.

Moving on to the Delphian and then Athenian League, Ware enjoyed another successful period. Two promotions, two league cup wins and two reserve championships paved the way for progress in the FA Cup. In this Ware reached the First Round proper for the first time in 1968 when they travelled to the then Third Division side Luton Town. The opposition had a 100% home record but the game was scoreless with 30 minutes to go before a judicious substitution broke the stalemate and left Ware beaten 6-1 at the final whistle.

In these successful circumstances it was not surprising that Ware pressed for entry to the expanding Isthmian League. This was achieved for season 1975/76 and they have maintained their place at that level ever since. This is thanks most recently to their Division 2 Championship season of 2005/6 under manager Glen Alzapiedi which carried them into Division 1 just before Division 2 was disbanded. Alzapiedi's side brought further distinction with another FA Cup First Round appearance in 2007 which saw a narrow home defeat against Kidderminster Harriers in front of 2,123 spectators, a record for the current ground at Wodson Park.

Before that a tenth Herts Senior Cup Final in 2001 and another in 2008 have emphasised the club's long history and continuity.

Ware is the first of only three possible candidates to appear in this final in three separate centuries, evidence that it is still one of the county's leading clubs.

Paul Halsey Ware Manager: Paul started in management as the goal keeper coach at Ware in 2007 before graduating to team manager two years later. He moved on to the assistant manager’s role at Billericay Town for the 2011/2012 season when they won the Isthmian League title. Since then he has held the manager’s post at Hoddesdon and then Hertford town before returning to Ware as manager in 2018 when he guided the club to seventh place in the table, its highest in eleven years. By the time the following season was brought to a halt by the Covid outbreak Ware were clear at the top of the Isthmian League Central Division and in each of the two completed seasons since then his sides have reached the play-off final twice and last seasons semi-final.

Ware Pen Pics

Fred Burbidge: Fred joined us from Hendon for whom he made 33 appearances in 2021/2. He has also been on the books of Boreham Wood and Potters Bar, and also made loan appearances for Dunstable Town and Waltham Abbey. An ever present last season.

Prior to that he started at Premier League Tottenham Hotspur before joining League One Cambridge United where he played for the under-18s. He has had experience in Poland before returning to Britain to play for St Neots Town, Biggleswade Town and Wingate & Finchley.

Mitch Hahn: Mitch Hahn, who says he can play anywhere but put me down as a midfielder? Had long been on Paul Halsey's radar when he eventually got his man when Mitch signed on the dotted line in the 2023/24season. Vastly experienced he joined Ware from Grays Athletic for whom he enjoyed a reputation as a great midfielder. This year he also takes on the mantle of vice-captain. Has had quite a career before those four years in Essex including spells at Enfield Town and Bishop's Stortford.

David Sota: David is a solid full back, the 24-year-old had previously been with Edgware Town, Uxbridge, Potter Bar Town and Chesham

United. David is an accomplished defender who has settled in well at Ware, made the most appearances for Ware last season.

joined Royston for the following season. He comes to us with experience as a Step 3 central defender..

Timothy Ike Okwusogu: Ike has played as a striker for Spurs under19 side and more recently scored an impressive hat trick in one of our pre-season games. This has earned him the chance to establish himself in the Ware squad..

Johnny Allotey: A wide player who joined us from Potters Bar. In early games he has demonstrated the speed and skill necessary to open up defences. Was previously with Harrow Borough, a talented exciting forward.

Max Granville: Max is a talented midfielder who was previously playing for Biggleswade Town.

Isaac Evans: A left back who started as a West Ham United player he has most recently been with Huntly in Scotland's Highland League.

Samuel Mayuma: Samuel signed in pre-season and was previously playing for Cheshunt FC.

Jay Rolfe: Jay is and experience defender at steps 3 and 4 and has joined Ware from Hitchin Town, previous clubs include Welwyn Garden City, Hadley and Royston Town.

Leverstock Green 1 Vs Berkhamsted 0

Leverstock Green notched a second straight win and clean sheet as they overcame neighbours Berkhamsted in the first round of the Herts Senior Cup on Tuesday night. A second half header from Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica was enough to seal a well-deserved and hard-fought win for the Leverstock side, who now face a home tie against Stevenage in the second round.

The first half saw the visitors have the majority of the pressure, although they only had one clearcut chance, in the 31st minute when a cross found Leverstock legend Jonathan Lacey at the far post, but Lacey’s header went across goal and wide. Leverstock should have taken the lead two minutes before the break. Callum Neal was through on goal, and squared to set up a chance for Rawn Seale, whose shot was saved by Berko keeper Matthew Burch, although Seale and the supporters behind the goal were convinced that the ball had crossed the line before Burch pulled it back. The goal was not given, and Leverstock manager Fergus Moore was sent off for his protests.

In the opening minute of the second half Lacey had another chance, but Alfie Bonfield pulled off a tremendous save to tip his shot over the bar. There was another moment of controversy in the 73rd minute when Eyituoyo Akinbulumo got his head to a cross to seemingly put Leverstock in the lead, but the goal was then disallowed for a foul on Burch.

However, five minutes later Leverstock had the ball in the net again and this time it counted. Rio Beach went on a run down the left and delivered a superb cross which found the unmarked Stefanoaica at the far post with a perfectly-placed header past Burch to finally put Leverstock 1-0 up.

That proved to be enough as the Leverstock defence remained as solid as it had been throughout the game. Both centre-backs Gary Connolly and Akinbulumo were outstanding, but the latter just got the nod as man-of-the-match for his performance.

Alan Lee Reporting Welwyn Garden City 4 VS Leverstock Green 0

With two wins within the last week under their belts, Leverstock Green went into Saturday’s visit to Welwyn Garden City with momentum on their side, but it proved to be a tough afternoon as the home side completed a league double over Leverstock with a comfortable win.

Fergus Moore is still missing a number of players through injury, and with both Rawn Seale and Guiseppe Delgaudio injured had no centre forward today. Right back Callum Neal was unavailable so new signing Isaiah Hilaire was drafted in at right back. Leverstock made a slow start to the game and were two goals down within ten minutes. In the 5th minute a cross from the left was not cleared and Lewis Jones came in at the far post to head home. Five minutes later another cross from the left came in and Lewis Taaffe got on the end of it to shoot home from close range.

A tactical reshuffle saw Hilaire moved out to left wing while Ethan Mooney went to right back, but Leverstock were still struggling to hold onto the ball for any length of time. Brad Wadkins should have added a third for Welwyn in the 24th minute but his shot hit the bar, and a minute later Layne Eadie ran through on goal but hit his shot wide. Leverstock won their first corner of the game in the 36th minute, and home keeper Joe Welch could only punch it up into the air. As the ball came down Mooney got his head to it, but it went over the bar.

Leverstock were somewhat fortunate to get to the break only two goals behind, but the second half proved to be no easier. Five minutes in they had a free kick in a dangerous position, but Ryan Carruthers’ shot was comfortably gathered by Welch. Welwyn went straight down the other end, and it was a familiar story as a cross from the left found Taaffe unmarked to shoot home their third goal.

Taaffe could have completed his hat-trick in the 60th minute as the referee awarded Welwyn a penalty for an incident in a scramble following a corner. However, Alfie Bonfield pulled off a great save to keep his spot kick out.

The fourth goal did eventually arrive in the 72nd minute. A corner was headed away to the edge of the penalty area, where Matty Whichelow met it with a low shot through a crowd of players into the bottom corner of the net.

Late substitutions saw a first team debut for Shay Kelly, who has come up through the youth teams at Leverstock, and a debut for Lewis Croucher, who had only left Welwyn a few days earlier and was quickly snapped up by Leverstock.

Leverstock had some half-chances to pull a goal back in the remaining minutes, but this is a game they will have to quickly put behind them as they are back in action on Monday night with a trip to Bedford to face Biggleswade FC.

Biggleswade FC 3 VS Leverstock Green 3

Leverstock Green led three times in Monday night’s game away to Biggleswade FC, but they had to be content with a point and will be quite grateful for that point after the home side came very close to snatching the win at the death.

The Leverstock side was boosted by the return of both Dan Pett and top scorer Guiseppe Delgaudio from injury, and they thought they had taken the lead in the third minute. Lewis Collins was put clear down the right and crossed into the box where Luke Beckwith put it away from close range, however the goal was disallowed for a questionable offside decision. In the 21st minute it was the turn of the home side to put the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out by an offside flag.

Two minutes later a pass from Rio Beach put Beckwith in behind the defence and through on goal. Beckwith looked set to finish, but instead squared across goal where Delgaudio came in at the far post to finish, and this time there was no flag as Leverstock took a 1-0 lead. In the 32nd minute Delgaudio might have had a second when he spotted the keeper off his line and launched a chip from distance, but it landed just wide.

Three minutes before half time the scores were level as Amir Hadi made something out of nothing with an outstanding finish from a very narrow angle.

Leverstock were back in front in the 63rd minute, and it was a second goal for Delgaudio, whose low shot from the edge of the penalty area wasn’t the hardest but left the home keeper standing and watching it go in.

The 2-1 lead lasted seven minutes, as Biggleswade substitute Ethan Kessel finished from close range to level the scores at 2-2. However, almost straight from the restart Collins won the ball and headed for goal before squaring for Beckwith to score and put Leverstock back into an immediate lead at 3-2.

In the 74th minute Alfie Bonfield produced a great save to keep out a shot from Hadi, with Eyituoyo Akinbulumo completing the clearance with a header off the line. With a couple of minutes to go Isaiah Hilaire might have added a further Leverstock goal, but had the ball taken off his toe by a defender when just about to shoot. As the game went into five minutes added time Leverstock were still holding their lead, but the home side’s persistence paid off in the second added minute when Dan Carey-Evans volleyed home from inside the box to level the scores at 3-3.

Biggleswade certainly weren’t settling for the point, and piled pressure on the Leverstock goal over the remaining minutes, hitting the bar on one occasion, but Leverstock held out for a very well-deserved point from a very entertaining game of football.

Biggleswade FC (1) 3 (Hadi 42, Kessel 70, Carey-Evans 90+2)

Alan Lee Reporting Leverstock Green 2 Vs Leighton Town 2

Leverstock Green twice came from behind to earn another point in the Southern League Division One Central. The Leverstock side turned in a very hard-working and battling performance against Leighton Town and were well worth their point against a team in good form recently.

It wasn’t a great start for Leverstock as the visitors took the lead in the 8th minute from a very straightforward goal. Charlie Pattison rose unchallenged at the near post to head home a corner.

However, Leverstock got themselves into the game and went close to an equaliser in the 26th minute as a pass from Luke Beckwith put Guiseppe Delgaudio in on goal, but visiting keeper Connor Hunt saved Delgaudio’s shot. The equaliser came seconds later, though, as a pass from Delgaudio put Lewis Collins clean through on goal, and Collins took the ball round Hunt before slotting into the empty net for 1-1.

It looked like the scores would be level at the break, but in first half stoppage time Leverstock conceded again from a corner. Jack Sayell’s header was saved by Alfie Bonfield, but the rebound was not cleared and Sayell pounced to force the loose ball home for a 2-1 Leighton lead.

Seven minutes into the second half Leverstock were awarded a penalty as Hunt brought down Dan Pett inside the box as he chased a rebound. Beckwith stepped up to take the spot kick and sent it past Hunt to level the scores again at 2-2.

Leverstock went close to going in front for the first time in the 66th minute. A neat reverse pass from Pett gave Collins the chance to show his pace and race clear of the Leighton defence, however Collins’ eventual shot went across goal and just eluded Delgaudio sliding in at the far post. Tolu Ikuyinminu had the best chance for Leighton to win the game in the 71st minute when through on goal, but hit his shot wide under pressure from a Leverstock defender. Leighton put the Leverstock goal under quite a bit of pressure in the closing minutes, but they held out to claim the point from an entertaining game.

A few words about KitAid

KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd).

After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world.

How to donate

If you’d like to support the KitAid cause, the easiest way to donate your unwanted football kit, in order for us to find it a new home.

Alternatively, if you don’t have any unwanted kit, but would still like to support us, we’re very grateful for any donations which will help to fund our annual costs as well as support other partnership charities where possible.

We thank you for all your support.

In working in some of the most under-privileged countries around the world, The Football Association is no stranger to seeing the impact the donation of something as simple as a shirt or a pair of shorts can make. KitAid has brought an enormous amount of pleasure and enjoyment to young and old alike through the gift of football kit and has shared the spirit of British clubs and the England team with communities in all corners of the globe. We are proud to be associated with KitAid and wish them all the best in their endeavours for the years to come.

YOU may have caught our recent programme column on former Non-League players excelling as coaches at the elite level of the game.

The current poster boy is, of course, Anthony Barry. In case you didn’t seem, the former Conference title winner landed a new job last week. England assistant manager!

It’s only been seven years since he was in Wrexham’s midfield. Since taking the coaching path, he’s been on the staff at Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Belgium and Portugal – now he will be Thomas Tuchel’s right-hand man.

“Pretty incredible,” he said when asked how it felt for England’s YouTube channel. “Quite surreal. The process since it started has been fantastic. Thomas and I have loved every minute of it. As soon as I’ve seen this project capture the imagination of Thomas in the way that it did, we were back and forward sharing so much energy towards it, the imagination of the team and what we can do with these players.

“And then, of course, there is the extra layer for me. I am an Englishman. I’ve worked at other federations around the world. It was always a privilege to work on the highest level.

“But to come home now and represent The FA, England and the Three Lions is something that is the proudest day of my career so far.”

Liverpool-born Barry, 38, progressed through the Everton youth ranks but was released at 18 and went on to play for Coventry City, Accrington Stanley, Yeovil Town and Chester City.

Barry joined Fleetwood Town to help them win promotion to the Football League before joining Step 1 Forest Green Rovers for the 2013-14.

Finishing his career after a second stint at Wrexham, Barry joined Paul Cook’s backroom staff at Wigan in 2017 and after a chance meeting with Frank Lampard while studying for his UEFA Pro-Licence.

His detailed analysis of 16,380 throw-ins made a mark on Lampard and Barry was drafted in to work under the Blues legend as a set-piece coach – a role which he has since gone on to make his name.

Lampard departed in January 2021, but Barry stayed on at Stamford Bridge to work under his successor Tuchel.

The pair developed a strong friendship, helping Chelsea win the Champions League, and when Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea in September 2022, he returned for Barry when he was appointed at Bayern Munich the following year. England will be their third job together.

This, however, will not be Barry’s first foray into international football having worked with the Republic of Ireland and also under Roberto Martinez with both Belgium and Portugal.

But while the 2026 World Cup may now be in his sights, the humble Three Lions assistant says he still looks back today on his very first taste of coaching at the age of 29, working with Accrington Stanley's U16 side with injury now stalling his playing career.

“I remember that first session so clearly,” Barry told the Essential Euros podcast last summer.

“It was on a Tuesday night. It was with around 10 players. I had a third of a pitch, not enough balls, not enough bibs.

“But I simply fell in love with coaching and on that night I knew it was absolutely everything I wanted to do. I felt a passion from that session with those kids that I hadn't felt in playing games - even at Wembley. I knew right there and then, I wanted to be a young coach.”

A lot has been written about the opportunities English managers and coaches since Tuchel’s appointment. And there is a debate to be had.

But it’s good to see one of Non-League’s own flying the flag.
