2011 YEAR IN REVIEW

Fishing May 21st was the opening of walleye season this year with groups heading into Bemar, Mountairy and Wapikaimaski Lake. The weather was great for most of the summer; warm and dry, keeping water levels on our Northern lakes low. Our Southern lakes had normal to high water because of a series of cold fronts that went through the south and dumped large quantities of rain in that area. With low to normal water levels the fishing was good in the spring with guests reporting great fishing on all of our lakes. The passage of the cold fronts made fishing a bit harder but the fisher men and women didn’t give up hope and in a day or two the Walleye and Northern were hitting as hard as ever.

At about 2:30 we found walleye and a bunch of them just before Little Island in North Arm Bay. Caught 16 northern pike, 24 walleye and 3 perch.

Water levels were low all year making it hard to get to some of the more secluded fishing spots. Despite this the fishing was good and produced the biggest Northern of the year caught by Don from the Frischie group at 45 1/4”.

The 2011 season was a bigger success than we could have expected! The weather was the driest that we have seen in a long time. It seemed to be a season of extremes. Long periods of warm days with light winds followed by sudden thunderstorms giving rise to multiple microburst events (severe downdraft winds) causing a lot of blow down at the camps. Most of the days were warm and sunny with light wind making it a great year for flying, with relatively few delays in getting guests to and from their vacations on time. We look forward to the beginning of the 2012 season and to the return of all of the guests that we have had the pleasure of knowing for years and also to making the acquaintance of all of the new guests whom we have yet to meet. Thank you again for sharing a piece of this amazing summer with us!

“The fly in was beautiful to see such a vast wilderness area. Really glad to have had the opportunity to see all of this beauty.”

The Kashabowie Outposts Archery hunt was a huge success in 2011! One of our most successful hunts ever; let’s hope that 2012 can keep pace. After the spectacular 2011 season we are confident that the 2012 Archery Moose Hunt will be a huge success with the high moose population in our area.

the history of Kashabowie Outposts, with most camps having a minimum of 10 moose encounters in one form or another. The hunters seemed to get most of their action around the 27th of September but moose were both called in and taken throughout the hunt. Gridiron had the most spectacular action but all of the lakes had exceptional bull activity.

Rifle Hunting Our rifle moose hunt opened October 10, 2011. The rifle hunt was unfortunately the least productive we have had in several years. This seemed to be the case throughout the region this year. The moose were rutting so hard during the archery hunt that they were just worn out. The season started with calm winds and warm temperatures then turned cold but with very high winds. As a result, the moose only started to move again late in October, after the hunters had gone home. Even with these poor conditions, Mary Brucker was able to take a nice 57” bull from Wapikaimaski Lake. The hunters at Tommyhow Lake took a nice calf, and the Bemar Lake hunters took a cow. The Bemar Lake crew had an opportunity at a bull but couldn’t quite make it happen, but that’s hunting.

“Friday was better than Thursday. We’re up at 6AM and hit the ‘honey holes’ – success! The great thing about a fly-in lake is that there is fish! You just have to find them and under the changing conditions, Grew has all the great north country characteristics. Location and structure and the fish are there. Find the right spot and everyone is on with nice stringers.” - Transue

& Ghosh

“Came in on Tuesday and we were fished out by Friday. Caught many walleyes and northern every day. Ate four walleye dinners and caught our limits. We caught and 8.1, 7.7, 7.6 & 7.1 lbs walleyes, and our average walleye was about 3 lbs. Fishing was fantastic and the landscaping beautiful. We saw a Moose with 2 calves at the falls area, Bald Eagles, a snowshoe Rabbit and a wolf!” - Mike,
