YUFENG SONG Part II Architectural Assistant Email: songyufeng@hotmail.com Tel: +44 775 6309 430 Web: yufengarch.com
I am a part 2 graduate from University of Sheffield. I have 13 months internship experience in a small practice in China during my bachelor degree in University of Liverpool and master degree. I like to explore the potential meaning of architecture within its life cycle. I theoretically agree that the meaning of architecture and the services it can provide vary according to the change of environmental, social and economic conditions. This is the reason why I developed a strong interest in adaptation and regeneration of buildings. I am an open and inclusive person to diverse cultures, with organised and ambitious. I have a strong curiosity for new technologies and media in practice and am good at collaborating with colleagues.

01 MARCH YEAR 6 PROJECT: STUDIO COLLABORATIVE PRODUCTION, 2021-2022
Rewilding Attercliffe Spring 2022, Individual work Instructor - Daniel Jary Site - Stevenson Rd, Attercliffe, Sheffield Introduction: Attercliffe is in danger of the decline of heavy industry, with the area still holding on to its ‘the beginning of continental steel works’ label. As work in the field of research and development rises in the area, some factories are slowly moving out of Attercliffe, leaving many gaps in the landscape. The value of these sites negates the possibility of them becoming quality housing, instead they provide a valuable opportunity for rewilding. By introducing wetlands, rewilding is the reclamation and restoration of former industrial land in urban areas and can restore the ecology of the town in a cost effective and efficient way. At the same time, wetlands can alleviate flooding along rivers and attract new species, improving the ecological environment. Studio Collaborative Production positions itself in a speculative future where a radically different society exists. A transformation of the way people engage with work, education, local governance and with each other is enabled through a shift away from the prevailing and unsustainable economic model to a sharing economy. By promoting alternative and innovative forms of production and exchange, society centres itself around interdependency, being socially inclusive and regenerative for the natural environment. SITE: My intervention will act as the beginning of a green corridor for the whole attercliffe area as the site occupies an undeveloped piece of land along the River Don and extends the wetland landscape along the river to other areas of attercliffe. The project benefits mutually from the energy research and low carbon living projects of my studio partners, sharing the use of some key energy technologies and materials for the benefit of the surrounding community and environment.

COLLABORATION: The philosophy of Studio Collaborative Production is that all projects need to develop collaboratively within Attercliffe area, to the extent that each campus does not necessarily act as a separate institution, but is more or less part of a community-wide strategy, which involves a collaborative effort from any possible stage or degree.

MATERIAL STRATEGY The project aims to use green, environmentally friendly and recyclable building materials to improve the landscape while minimising the environmental impact. Therefore, the design is based on the use of rammed earth as a wall material, which is widely available, inexpensive, waterproof and durable. It is also intended to use plants grown in the wetlands and their by-products as part of the building material, such as reed claddings and thatched roofs.

Once these plans and drafts are realised, the Wetland Education and Research Centre will be the starting point for the rewilding transformation of Attercliffe, when the construction of wetlands along the River Don will expand to the entire Attercliffe area, when the wetland landscape will become a major promotional hit for attercliffe, serving the residents of the entire Attercliffe district, providing diversity of ecological landscapes and community activities. These activities will define the image of post-industrial Attercliffe and serve as a model for other flood-prone areas.

02 MARCH YEAR 5 PROJECT: STUDIO RESILIENT FUTURES, 2020-2021
Fun Garden Spring 2021, Individual work Instructor - Lucy Dinnen Site - Alta Shopping Mall, Franca Lehara 2, Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Introduction: ‘Fun Garden’ discusses the future of high streets in Sarajevo and how to repurpose them in a resilient way. Shopping has deeply affected people’s lifestyles and with the advent of other patterns of shopping, traditional shopping malls are no longer needed today. Additionally, the air crisis in Sarajevo has affected the locals a lot. People have the right to pursue fresh air. ‘Fun Garden’ examines how these spaces and communities can become more efficient in a sustainable process. This project repurposes a shopping centre ‘Alta Shopping Centre’, located right opposite the parliament of BiH, into a green playground in 2025. Then, a new social and leisure square is built in the most prosperous part of the city, to make a political statement, purifying the city and entertaining people. PHASE 1: The Sarajevo Purification Vending Machine is the first stage of my response to the air crisis in order to achieve a resilient 2025. It is a very costly, low-volume and inconvenient purification device, but in Sarajevo, where air pollution is getting worse, the device collects rainwater and domestic waste water, stores it for purification and transforms it into usable pure water and clean air. It will be placed throughout the city’s neighbourhoods, providing a place for residents to gather and chat, and exchange a minuscule amount of clean air and water. Even if it is not an effective solution to the air crisis, it will hopefully provide some humour to a world in bad shape.
17
PHASE 2 THE FUN GARDEN CONCEPT MASTERPLAN
Providing people with indoor gardens that filter the air, becoming a square for people to relax after work and calling the city’s attention to the problem of environmental pollution is the starting point for the development of this project. The centre provides clean filtered air indoors by collecting rainwater and residents’ waste water, and uses the filtered water for indoor plant care and consumer drinking. The underperforming ‘Alta Shopping Centre’ will be the city’s first air-purifying indoor garden and, if effective, will renovate more old and abandoned buildings, sharing quality air and healthy plants with the whole city and improving the overall air pollution problem in Sarajevo as much as possible.

03 BA FINAL YEAR PROJECT, 2019-2020
'INTO THE ROCK' Fall 2019, Individual work Instructor - Anna Gidman Site - Thirlmere Reservoir, Lake District
Introduction: Climate change has been a serious and pressing concern for responsible architects and citizens, for many years now. Dramatic extreme weather events over the last few years, across the world and more locally in the North of England, have re-emphasised the urgent need to design for a changing climate and to help prevent further climate breakdown. The Lake District and in particular the valley of Thirlmere at the base of Helvellyn has provided inspiration and a home for generations of notable poets, storytellers, and artists to reflect upon the world they inhabit, including most famously William Wordsworth and the artistic period known as Romanticism. In this project of 'Into the Rock‘, nature is one of my focus. To fight climate change, I hope my design can dissolve into the environment. Keep the integrality of nature rather than break the harmony. Through analysing the rocks and geometric study, I shaped the buidling like rocks to fit the context. With the precedent study of James Turrell, I explored a new way to enjoy the beauty from nature. As for materials, I mostly chose local woods and recycled materials to protect our environment. I hope my building can no longer serve the demands from storytellers and visitors, but also appeal people to appreciate and protect the nature. Meihekou High-Tech Zone Hotel Fall 2020, Jilin, China Introduction: The Meihekou Hi-Tech Hotel is located next to the city’s exhibition centre on a beautiful site bordering a wetland park, which mainly receives exhibitors and visitors to the exhibition. The hotel has 11 floors and a site area of 1,384 square metres. The design of the hotel is intended to form a spatial progression with the surrounding landscape, harmonise with the surrounding building complex and complement the exhibition halls. In addition, the building incorporates many organic materials into the spatial form, combining modern minimalist design with a Chinese style of writing. I was involved in the negotiation with the client and the initial design phase of the project as well as the graphic and technical drawings, covering some of the work from RIBA Stage 0-3. Changbai Mountain Museum Overpass Fall 2019, Jilin, China Introduction: This project was to design an external overpass for the Changbai Mountain Museum. The client required the footbridge to harmonise with the museum complex and the surrounding landscape, acting as an organic part of the museum complex. Our team’s design concept was to extract elements and colours from the museum’s architecture and natural elements such as the landscape, so that the overpass would not only harmonise with the surrounding buildings but also become a landscape in its own, reflecting the landscape’s meaning and modernity, as well as satisfying visitors’ comfort and safety.
