In season 1961-62, York City were challenging for promotion again after missing out the previous season when finishing fifth. Coming into York's last game of the season played at home to Aldershot on April 28, 1962, things were tight at the top of Division Four. York City were fourth in the table but three points covered five teams around them, and three of those sides had a game in hand on York, including their opponents Aldershot, so nothing less than a win was necessary, and then hope that other results went their way. One of the biggest crowds of the season (7,321), turned out at Bootham Crescent to urge the team on and a very nervous ninety minutes was expected. However it all turned out to be too much and they lost the game 1-0 to finish sixth in the League, two points off a promotion place and one point in front of Aldershot. www.tooab.com.
