About this match programme
By Josh Easby In September 1971, York City met second division Middlesbrough in the second round of the Football League Cup in front of 10,700 at Bootham Crescent. City led 2-0 through goals from Kevin McMahon and winger Tommy Henderson but allowed ‘Boro to fight back for a 2-2 draw. The resulting replay sent City back to Ayresome Park where ‘Boro had easily beaten City the season before, running out 4-1 winners in the FA Cup before a crowd of 38, 282. This time, York took their revenge, beating ‘Boro 2-1 in front of 21,121 spectators on September 14, 1971. Scorers were Laurie Calloway, a pre-season signing from Southport, and Henderson. The win saw City drawn away to Sheffield United in the third round, a tie they lost 32. Newly promoted to division three that season, York’s attack was led by Paul Aimson, scorer of 31 goals the previous season.
