About this match programme By Richard Snowball Having spent five seasons in Division Four, York City were challenging for promotion again coming into the match against Notts County played on February 13, 1965. At the beginning of the season, York had strengthened their side with the addition of Paul Aimson from Manchester City, Dennis Walker from Manchester United and Andy Provan from Barnsley. York were lying second in the table, two points behind Tranmere Rovers, and Notts County were mid table. After a tight match, York ran out winners 2-1 with a penalty from Walker and a second from winger Billy Rudd in front of a crowd of 6,188. At the end of the season, York achieved their second ever League promotion by finishing third in the table behind Brighton and Millwall with Oxford in the fourth promotion place. The three newcomers to the side all proved their worth with Aimson top scorer with 26 goals, Provan 18 and Walker 15 from midfield including four penalties. During the season, York set up new records by winning seven consecutive games in mid season, and a new home record of Won 20, Drawn 1 and Lost 2, in the process winning their last 14 home games.
