About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This programme from November 20, 1948 is from probably one of York City's best ever home victories. Rotherham were top of Division 3 North having only dropped three points from their first 17 matches, losing one and drawing one, but York outplayed the opposition and won the game 6-1 with local player Alf Patrick scoring 5 goals. Although the score was a big surprise the result possibly was not, as York themselves were fifth in the League and on a six match unbeaten run at home scoring 23 and only conceding 2 goals. City's form in the second half of the season dropped away and they finished just below halfway, whilst Rotherham just missed out on promotion being pipped by Hull City to the title. Alf Patrick finished the season top scorer with 26 goals in 41 matches. The other notable achievement for the club during this season was the purchase of Bootham Crescent in September 1948, it having previously been leased since 1932.
