I know I like to read all of the lovely mini catalogues from my favourite brands so I thought Toolally should have one too. In this first issue, you can find all the earrings you will need to take you through Christmas and the party season. There are also sneak peeks at my new spring collection which will be live on the website by the end of January 2020. And on page 18 I’ve also shared everything I’ve learnt over the last four years about how to choose statement earrings.

We’ve just got back from the Spirit of Christmas fair in London and I loved it. Meeting our customers is truly inspirational so next year I plan to get out and about to lots more events and shows, I’d also love to have a pop up shop so I can meet more of you face to face. I hope you’ve had a chance to watch Toolally Talks on YouTube. We filmed it here on the Broughton Hall Estate in Yorkshire where we are lucky enough to be based and it was the best fun. If you did see it and have any suggestions for future episodes, I would love to hear from you. Have a lovely Christmas and stay stylish!

PS A dream come true for me this year was when I met the Strictly Come Dancing wardrobe team. You can check out our Strictly Stars on page 14.

OUR STRICTLY STARS I realised a dream in 2019. I got to meet the Strictly wardrobe team and see some of our wonderful earrings on the show. I have been to London and Blackpool (backstage only) those audience tickets really are like goldust and I can confirm that the wardrobe department are geniuses. They work unbelievably hard from the beginning of the run to the end, they are the nicest, friendliest, most talented bunch of people you could meet. They made me feel like a member of their family from day one. My Saturdays and Sundays have been a joy as I’ve played spot Toolally - I’ve never known from TOOLALLY JEWELLERY STYLE MAGAZINE | PAGE 14

week to week whether we would appear or not as of course it really depends how it works on the day, how the dancers and celebrities feel and how easy they are to dance in. But with the odd exception we have appeared on the dancefloor every week. Professional dancer, Katya Jones sent this message “We love your jewellery on the show! It’s so light and doesn’t hurt at all when we dance, normally it's a big problem! But your earrings are beautiful and weightless. Perfect for dancing!” Made my day!

There are three basic face shapes; Round, Square, and Oval. Your face shape will determine which style and shape of earring will suit you best. You should complement rather than mirror your face shape. If you have a round face, choose angular, geometric styles of earrings. The widest part of your face will be your cheeks so create balance by wearing earrings which elongate your face. Longer drops, diamonds and squares will all look great on you. If you have a square face you need to introduce some curves. Rounded styles will work best and you should avoid having the biggest part of the earring near your jaw. Drawing attention up towards your eyes will be a flattering look for you. Large studs, short circles or fans work well. Larger, tapered styles can also look great but make sure the bottom of the earring extends below or stops short of your jawline. If you have an oval face you can choose round or angular and pretty much any style will suit you. If your face is a long oval you may like to shorten it by wearing wide earrings higher up and draw attention to your eyes. If you have a narrow or pointy chin, earrings that are wider at the bottom will be especially flattering. AS A GENERAL RULE, if you want to emphasise your eyes, keep the body of your earring near your lobes and to emphasise your smile wear a small drop which stops just above your jawline. For full-on “night on the tiles” glamour go for shoulder skimmers.

Wearing the right colour earrings will light up your face. Wearing the wrong colour will cast shadows under your eyes and have everyone asking if you’re feeling ok. Or worse, silently thinking you don’t look your best. There are cool colours and warm colours and a myriad of shades and tones in between. The difference it makes is dramatic if you understand which colour and tone will suit you best.

The tone you are checking is not skin tone but undertone and it’s an important distinction. Your skin tone can change over time for a variety of reasons but undertone remains constant, even when you tan. Undertones are the colours beneath your skin. That means it is possible to have the same skin tone as someone else but have a completely different undertone. Another common misconception is that fair skinned ladies can’t have warm undertones or dark skinned women can’t have cool tones. If you are cool, your hair and skin tone will often contrast sharply as with brunettes with pale skin. Clear strong tones will work best. Icy blues, reds and silver. Warm, auburn haired beauties who tan easily will suit warm colours; golds, greens and oranges. Contrast is important too. If you have dark skin and dark hair, gentle colours like soft pinks or gentle nudes look lovely. Dark hair and light skin will suit more vivid colours.

Follow this simple guide and you can be sure that wearing statement earrings will become second nature to you. And looking fabulous can become addictive!

Our colouring generally falls into one of three camps: cool, warm and neutral. You can check whether you are cool or warm by simply looking at the underside of your wrist. If you are cool you will have a pinky, blue tone to your skin and blue veins. If you are warm you will have a more peachy tone and your veins will seem more green than blue. If you have a mixture of both or your undertone is the same colour as your actual skin then you are neutral.

NEW FOR SPRING 2020 SPRING has got to be one of my favourite seasons. The start of brighter mornings, sunnier skies and lots of beautiful colours in nature. For the Toolally Spring 2020 Collection, I wanted to introduce some fabulous new materials in colourways that are easy to wear and super glamorous. This year I discovered some lovely marble and pearl acrylics as well as a beautiful hand cast acrylic in abalone. These new materials are a little more expensive than the perspex frosts but I hope you will agree they are worth every penny.

A PERSONAL SERVICE I don’t know if everyone knows, and that's undoubtedly our fault if true, but we offer a personal styling as well as a bespoke service. If you are going to a special event and have found the perfect dress but are unsure which earrings to choose you can send a pic of yourself in your outfit to style@toolally.com and we’ll pick out a few different pairs for you. If there is nothing in quite the right combination of colours we can also make a special pair just for you.

FREE REPAIRS FOR LIFE We care a great deal about quality at Toolally, so much so that if you have any problems with your Toolallys, regardless of where you bought them, you can return them to us and we will repair them for you absolutely free of charge. You won’t need proof of purchase, Toolallys are instantly recognisable to us.

LIGHT AS A FEATHER There is nothing worse than statement earrings that pull and drag so at Toolally we only use wonderfully lightweight materials. Perspex, which is made just up the road from our studio, is just such a material and there is a wonderful array of colours available to us as well. We also use some handmade and other special acrylics so that we can indulge our love of glitter, pearls and marbles. The choices for us and consequently you are endless. We only use

TOOLALLY JEWELLERY STYLE MAGAZINE | PAGE 28

sterling silver or 22 carat gold vermeil fastenings. So there will be no nasty allergic reactions when wearing a pair of authentic Toolally earrings.

HANDMADE IN THE UK All Toolally jewellery is handmade in our studio in Barnoldswick. We’re a small team and we all have more than one job. Jewellery making and photography, jewellery making and illustrations, jewellery making and design. Customer service, admin, social media, website maintenance, store visits, shows and exhibitions. It’s fun and we love it and hope it shows. Check out our YouTube channel, there is a great behind the scenes video, where you can see us in action (or posing for the camera).

RECYCLED RANGE At Toolally we try to act sustainably wherever possible. We send all of our waste material over to the nearest Perspex centre so that it can be put back into the manufacturing process. One weekend I was looking at all of the acrylic pieces that come out of the earrings when they are cut and realised I could create a whole new collection using them. I wanted to design a collection that is affordable and sustainable. So I did. The Recycled Collection uses stainless steel findings and every style is random as they all depend on which earrings the pieces have been cut out from. They are a fun add on to the Toolally family and a collection that helps the environment. What’s not to love?
