POWER FORWARD CENTRE

SMALL FORWARD

SHOOTING GUARD

POINT GUARD

TEAM OF THE WEEK

POINT GUARD

Fletcher Keating (6A)

After a big preseason playing representative basketball for the Toowoomba Mountaineers and Darling Downs teams, Fletcher has taken that form into the GPS season. His intensity and hustle are a tough match for any team!

SMALL FORWARD

Henry Paton (3rd V)

Henry combined his smarts off the court with his 'Basketball IQ' on the court in a gallant effort vs. TSS last week. Up against a tough 3rd V opponent, Henry emptied the tank with his relentless effort and attack.

SHOOTING GUARD

James Armstrong (9B)

James Armstrong has been the picture of maturity and consistency in his return to Basketball this year. Regularly seen putting in a massive effort at practice, this has spilled over to the playing court where he is a leader for the might 9Bs.

POWER FORWARD

Samuel Geu (1st V)

After a few quiet games (by his own standards), Sam returned to his usual self with a 25 point explosion in a 19 point 1st V win over TSS. Add in his 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals and it's safe to say Sam has the stat sheet stuffed!

CENTRE

Brodie Krompic-Harrison (11B)

A versatile player that can play both inside and out, 'BK' is a stalwart of the program. He led the 11B team bravely this week in a comeback effort against TSS. Unfortunately the result wasn't to be but BK was a huge contributor in a valiant effort. BK also contributes to the program through our Coach Development Program and refereeing. Great job, BK!

Greg Spurgin's basketball journey is a tale of dedication and talent. A standout player at TGS, Greg captained the 2020 team and established himself as a formidable force on the court. His exceptional performance earned him a spot at Westminster University, a Division II school in Salt Lake City, Utah. During his time at Westminster, Greg appeared in six games, contributing solid minutes and showing his potential.

Currently, Greg is making strides at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), where he played alongside his brother, Jason. As a sophomore forward for the Falcons, Greg's transition to Division I basketball has been a learning experience, but his hard work and improvement are evident. Although he played limited minutes in his first season, Greg made notable contributions, including a season-high performance against Ohio Dominican.

Greg's journey reflects his unwavering commitment to growth and excellence. From his early days at TGS to his current endeavors at BGSU, he continues to inspire with his dedication and passion for the sport.

TGS BASKETBALL OLD BOYS

GREG SPURGIN

What is your current academic program, and what do you intend to do with your career?

I am currently a junior majoring in Physics with a minor in Astronomy and will look to become an aerospace engineer once I have finished playing.

What have been your biggest achievements since graduating?

I would say my greatest achievement to this point has been being awarded a scholarship to play basketball at the division I level. Along with this I have managed to maintain a 3.90 GPA across my three years of college to this point which allowed me to place as a runner up in junior scholar athlete at Bowling Green State University.

How has the transition from high school basketball to college/professional basketball been for you?

The transition has come with its positives and negatives. The pace and physical nature of collegiate basketball was a major learning curve for me initially while the style of play has been relatively similar in terms of schemes and offensive sets.

Can you share a memorable highlight or game from your current playing career?

One of my favorite moments has been sharing the court with my older brother while being on the same collegiate team. Another moment that was very memorable was playing BYU twice, once in their arena and the other time was in the Utah Jazz arena.

What is your fondest memory of playing basketball at Toowoomba Grammar School?

My fondest memory of playing basketball at TGS came in my last year during the last tournament that we played as a team. The time spent hanging out with some of my best friends while being able to compete with them was very fun.

The game that stands out most was the first GPS game of my grade 11 season where we faced off against GT and went down by 2 points. This was the point in TGS basketball which really made me believe that something special was being created within the program.

What advice would you give to current TGS basketball players aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

First, I would encourage anyone wanting to play college basketball to stay on top of their grades and strive for the best grade you can get while in high school. My first opportunity to play basketball was awarded to me due to a substantial academic scholarship that I was awarded. I would also advise to take risks, even if you are unsure about a pathway in which you choose to pursue the regret of not taking that opportunity might just haunt you more than the consequences of taking the risk.

MEET OUR COACHES FIRST V HEAD COACH JACOB ZUPP

We are pleased to announce Jacob Zupp as the new Head Coach of Toowoomba Grammar School's 1st V Basketball team. Coach Zupp brings extensive experience from his previous roles with the Toowoomba Mountaineers, Basketball Queensland Emerging Teams, and State Teams. His strategic approach and commitment to player development are expected to greatly benefit our program. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our athletes and the broader TGS Basketball community.

What core principles define your coaching philosophy, and how do you implement them with the TGS 1st V?

Some of my core values include commitment, positivity, and hard work. These things are important to me and I always aim to emphasise these things throughout my teams. The TGS values of Empty the tank, Sweep the Sheds and Family First also make up a big part of my philosophy at TGS. I work to implement these values each day through emphasising them in everything we do on and off court.

What are your goals for the basketball program at TGS in terms of player development and team success?

My primary goal for the boys in the program is to develop them on and off court and give them skills that will help them throughout life after school. I also aim to also further help TGS Basketball continue to improve and become one of the top GPS basketball programs. Creating a well-rounded student athlete and person is always the goal in everything we do.

How do you balance the demanding schedules of your boys, ensuring they excel academically and athletically?

I look to do this by continually emphasising time management and organisation in everything we do. We place a big importance on communication with coaching staff and teammates to ensure that all players are informing everyone of changes in schedules and other commitments. We look to support the boys by having compulsory study halls before each training to further support their academics. Assisting in reducing academic stress then helps put our focus into their basketball to ensure they succeed in this space.

Can you share some of the strategies used to foster teamwork and resilience among your players?

Within the First V we look to create a strong bond by ensuring that we spend time together off the court as a team. We participate in mindset and team culture sessions, travel on pre-season domestic tours and play numerous trial games to further build teamwork. During pre-season we looked to create a resilient group through tough training, high pressure environments and a tough pre-season tour in Melbourne.

What aspects of your previous experiences with the Toowoomba Mountaineers and Basketball Queensland have most influenced your coaching style at TGS?

I’ve taken a lot out of my previous coaching experiences, especially those experiences within the Basketball Queensland program. My experiences within Junior Nationals campaigns helped show me the attention to detail, hard work, and standards that are required in to achieve results in high performance junior basketball. These experiences have helped influence my coaching style in a positive way where I feel I bring attention to detail and high standards on and off the court while coaching in the TGS Basketball program.
