KATERINA SANTORINA FOUNDER

What distinguishes Miss TheGlam Monaco International from other similar beauty pageants? This year we organized it for the third time. And I can definitely say that we have nothing similar in Monaco. It is absolutely unique and has no analogues. If we talk about international competitions, the main difference lies in our concept: we put an emphasis not only on physical beauty, but also on personality. We spend 5 days with the delegates and remark the slightest peculiarities: how they behave, how they react on stress, etc. Beauty for us is not the determining factor. We choose the one who is a well-balanced and successful person having already fulfilled her potential. How many participants submitted their applications this year? About 5000. A distinctive feature of this year’s review process was that many girls were selected by our representatives — national directors who received franchise licenses in Africa, Japan, Mongolia‌ It really simplified the process of selecting participants. Last year the representative of Mongolia took the third place, and this year the girl from Japan became the first vice miss. Can we say that there is a European trend for everything exotic and non-standard? The trend has always existed, but if we talk about our Asian delegates, the main thing is not in their beauty, but in their behavior. You can clearly see how they differ from the European candidates. Asian women are unique: they are not pretentious; they have a special energy of acceptance, mildness. Europeans are more independent, while Asians are very sympathetic

10

2018

and friendly. I addition they always present themselves very well in creative contests: they are able to bring their philosophy and culture into their beautiful dance. What countries are you expecting to join in 2019? We are striving for expansion and would like to see delegates from many different countries, such as China, Thailand, the Philippines, African countries, perhaps the USA and Latin America. We are ready to give franchises for the next year to these countries. What is the most difficult for you and what helps you cope with difficulties? The most difficult is accommodating the interests of the big number of people involved. It is a big stress to hold such a grand-scale event. It is necessary to take into account the interests of the girls, our team, the interests of all the sponsors and partners. And despite the

grow up very much and move rapidly to the next level of their development and creativity. And we are very inspired when we see this transformation. There is not a single person whose life has not changed after participating in our projects. How can one participate in Miss TheGlam Monaco International? You should fill out the application form by sending all the necessary data and photos. If the girl is from the country having the franchise, everything needs to be submitted directly to our representative in this country. What beauty means to you? This concept is very complex. External beauty is not enough. There are many beautiful girls with perfect face and body, who, however, don’t evoke any emotions. Nothing tingles when you see them, you know, nothing

presence of many assistants, everyone always wants to communicate with the chief executive, which is us. The more people get involved, the more stressful it becomes. Someone falls ill; someone did not come, etc. We always strive for excellence and want to do everything perfectly, and the result always meets all expectations of our grateful participants, guests and partners — and this is the result, which inspires us to move forward. What is the main mission of your project? The main mission of all The Glam group projects is to bring beauty and harmony to this world. We want to create a beautiful event to motivate and aspire other people. Girls who take part in our projects get a chance for development. It’s a great start! 90 percent of our girls

responds inside. This is not beauty. Beauty is when a feeling of quiet joy arises in you, when you want to go back to this image, to imprint and remember it forever. What are the 3 main rules of your beauty? There are plenty of them, actually. It all depends on what kind of beauty we are talking about. But the most important thing is the inner self-improvement. Attempts to make yourself better, more harmonious and more compassionate. Constant movement and desire to conquer new summits, evolve as a person and a professional. As for appearance, the most important thing for me is sufficient sleep, healthy nutrition and physical exercises. But again, without inner harmony there will never be real beauty.

Miss TheGlam Monaco International is a very high-status event. How did you manage to reach this point in just 3 years? Indeed, Miss TheGlam Monaco International is one of the brightest balls in the Regency. Kate and I spent a lot of time developing the concept of the event. Nowadays, we have acquired the status of an the official International Pageant. Attracting other cultures and traditions is one of the key reasons why we are considered to be the best. It is the one and only event of this kind in Monaco. Moreover, the fact that the final of one of the most prestigious beauty contests takes place in one of the most beautiful, exclusive and expensive places in the world, easily attracts new countries. This year Japan joined, China and several more Asian countries will join the following year. I believe that until September 2019 there is plenty of time to give out new franchises to many more countries. Cooperation with which partners are you most proud of? Most of all, we are proud that we have managed to engage exclusive jewelry brands. This year, the brand U-BOAT presented to a winner a 35,000 EUR beautiful black diamonds watch. Another jewelry brand Money Art Berlin presented their signature pendent to the winner. This made Miss TheGlam Monaco International even more luxurious event as we are not just a world famous beauty contest, but also a very exclusive one. Who was in the jury? And was it difficult to choose a winner? This year we had a starry cast in the jury, celebrities from all over the world. However, it was not easy to choose a winner as each delegate was worthy to win.

We deliberately divided the voting process into several stages. We had been observing the girls behavior for 5 days of the contest, had the Instagram voting and a special sports event, determined to evaluate the endurance of the girls. The Queen should be beautiful in everything! Not only physical beauty is important, but also her inner world. And at the end of the day, the ability to sing, dance and entertain the public is not so important for a Queen. To bring something useful to this world — that’s what counts. What are your future plans? Right now, we are at the stage of negotiating with several more countries and we are open to give new franchises. As for the concept of the pageant, we want to save this year’s concept of the elite gala evening for the next year. Intimate setting, the luxurious event for a selected audience… We already have potential sponsors for the next

the gamut, work hard and then all the doors will open for you. Now there is such a variety of projects that no one knows what will shoot the moon. And if it does not work, you shouldn’t give up. Just try to come up with something new. The person, who knows exactly what he or she wants, is doomed to succeed. Where can one find your TheGlam Luxury Lifestyle Magazine? In Côte d’Azur and Monaco mostly and we have also London and Dubai according to the distribution plan. The magazine can be found in the luxury segment: private clubs, business terminals, superyachts, private jets. At various events, we always use the opportunity to take exclusive material from very interesting characters. It makes us special — a combination of fashion and luxurious lifestyle. We, being Ukrainians, made an English

year and we will do our best to keep Miss TheGlam Monaco International exclusive and high-status event. Share your lifestyle. Are you a vegetarian? How long have you decided to give up meat? My lifestyle is quite disciplined. For the last 2 years I have been following healthy lifestyle: 8 hours of sufficient sleep, certain regimen and a combination of products. I decided to give up meat 4 years ago and while at first it was only because I didn’t like meat, now I can definitely say that I am animal friendly, giving preference to artificial furs and being convinced that there is no need to kill innocent animals with all these modern technologies. What qualities do you think a modern person should develop in order to be successful? Tolerance and hard-working skills. You just need to run

language editorial, which is well read by the French, the British, and the Russians all over the world. This is the biggest reason to be proud of! What beauty means to you? Recently my beauty criterias have changed a lot. Today we can meet many beautiful girls who are similar to each other. Working in the beauty industry, I realized a long time ago that beauty is more than plump lips, long hair and fluffy eyelashes. Beauty is what a person transmits: harmony, sereneness, erudition. Yes, taking care of the physical appearance is very important, but you shouldn’t concentrate only on this. The kindest harmonious person who brings love to this world — this I a truly beautiful person. What are the 3 main rules of your beauty? Sufficient sleep, no alcohol and self-care.

BORN RACER “The minute you stop enjoying it, you need to retire.”

N

ick LEVENTIS is a professional racing driver competing in the prestigious FIA World Endurance Championship with the team he created, Strakka Racing. Let’s find out more about this motorsport legend of Le Mans who never stops to develop his skills and make new grades! You started your career in sports as a respected downhill skier. What made you turn your attention in motorsports? It was actually an unforeseen injury while training in a preseason training camp in Tignes, France. This unfortunate incident created the path for something even more significant to occur. The life shows that you should never stop chasing your dreams and because one particular path didn’t work out, it doesn’t necessarily mean that another route may evolve as a result. Tell us a few things about Strakka Racing. How was it created and what are the main differences with other teams? Fundamentally Strakka Racing was born

15

out of a desire to create a platform for myself to go racing on the international level. Over the years that’s very much grown into running multiple cars in multiple different series of top-level international motorsport. What in my opinion separates Strakka from many other teams is the family feel, we’ve never really lost that small family feel even though we have grown into an organization that is heavily supported by a manufacturer involvement. The partnerships with different manufacturer over the years have never influenced our ethos of being a family, which is a core value of the team. I think that atmosphere is well reflected in the team and the general energy we bring to race events. Why you prefer endurance races than speed ones? I think any races are challenging itself, because the more effort and work you put in as a team, the higher your chances of getting a result at the end. I think that’s magnified in an endurance race situation just because of the length of time there are for different scenarios to occur that are potentially beyond your control. For example, if you can com2018

16

2018

pare sports, in one Le Mans 24 Hour race, you can do an entire season of F1. The sheer magnitude and effort that goes into even finishing an endurance race, let alone having a good result is an incredible feat in itself, but that being said the same applies to sprint racing. It is just magnified in much bigger scale in endurance. What is your favourite car and favourite circuit? Before being involved with Mercedes AMG I was involved with HPD (Honda Performance Development) in Le Mans prototype (LMP2) racing, probably one of my most favourite cars to drive. At Le Mans in 2010 when we won, that car was incredibly quick and we were able to outperform many of the LMP1 factory cars at the time, especially in Europe that was a real joy to drive. Now, of course, I would have to say it is the Mercedes AMG GT3 I currently compete with is a fantastic car and package and I am very proud to be part of the Mercedes AMG family. My favourite circuits are Le Mans. Suzuka in Japan is very well suited for our car for the Mercedes GT3, and I am very fond of that. Next year we will race at Kyalami, South Africa which is a very personal favourite circuit of mine, so I have to say, Le Mans, Suzuka, and Kaylami. What are your main achievements and which was your most difficult race? For sure the two Le Mans wins in 2010 in LMP2 and 2013 in LMP1 Privateer. The LMP1 result was tough. Unfortunately, I lost a former teammate and friend during that race, however, this accident made the motivation to stay in the race and to continue to perform at my best. So that was an incredibly emotional 24 Hours. The victory was, of course, a lovely blessing and I am sure my friend who passed away would have been delighted with any performance and result for Strakka Racing but obviously, the celebrations were marred by this tragic outcome. Those were the two events that stand to mind. Could you describe Le Mans race in five words. Energy, Stamina, Focus, Drive, Passion How are you feeling during and after every race? Generally, I feel pretty Good. It is an area where I personally spend a lot of time and energy to keep fit. The current car I drive the AMG GT3 is with very high cockpit temperatures in hot countries. In Suzuka this year we

17

2018

18

2018

had ambient temperatures of about 55–60 degrees. Internally in the cockpit is very hard to operate at a physical level 1–2 hours stints. We have a lot of driver preparation concerning fitness, training, and recovery and I am pleased to have Strakka Performance program in place that helps me, the mechanics and all other drivers to perform at our optimum. What do you still want to achieve that you haven’t reached yet? I was thrilled to win the European Blancpain GT Endurance Championship this year, that meant a lot and its one more important tick in the box. There are few big races that are on our bucket list as a team to win like the 24 Hours of Spa, the 12 Hours of Bathurst and the 10 Hours of Suzuka. I would love to get an overall result at those few races, and if we achieve this, it would be a gratifying achievement to have for the team. Helping others and being in a position to help others is something that is very close to my heart. You have channelled your adrenaline to help good causes. What are your main incentives and motivation? It is very close to my heart to be in a position to help others. Currently I operate this on several platforms. Firstly, with helping kids in Bulgaria. Some of the closest people in my life are from Bulgaria and to be able to give back to their origins and to create opportunity through sport is a very passionate program that is close to me. One of the other issues is to help young drivers in a very financially driven industry like Motorsport, to support young talent and to give them the opportunity to shine. I am involved in a project with that in mind. I am a proud father of two boys and very much like to help children all over the world. Past endeavours have included the children of Burma, Thailand and, of course, Bulgaria. What is the thing in motorsports or sports in general that you find unacceptable? Any form of cheating in any way. It happens, we see it all the time, but winning by cheating can’t be as rewarding as doing it the hard way. Which part of racing can stand as a life lesson? Just general mental approach, I would say the more work you put in, the more you get out.

19

2018

If you can maximize every opportunity that is in your control and perform at your best level, whatever the outcome is I think you know you’ve had every success in achieving that. Sometimes things are beyond your control, but you can heavily influence that outcome with really optimizing and maximizing everything that is internal that you can control. What next for motorsport? Where do you see the opportunities? I think Motorsport is an interesting climate nowadays as you could notice the electric revolution occurring. I have a lot of friends and compatriots in Formula E, and I think as an industry is growing massively. I can surely see that energy saving and different energy type fuelled motorsport becoming more and more prevalent in the next decades for sure. What is your opinion about F1 and its future? I grew up stone throw away from Silverstone GP circuit and went to school within the area so grew up with a large part of Formula 1 racing history and I am a massive supporter of it. I do think the current cars in their disguise with the current engine format is probably not the most exciting to watch in terms of visualization and sound. I also think the television focus is not enough on the racing and more on the broadcasters themselves. Fundamentally I do hope that we see a revolution where more teams can compete on a more of a level playing field. It’s a shame that the top few teams go on a different level than the rest. I hope that they can follow more of a benchmark that Formula E or GT racing does, where you have multiple manufacturers all competing for an outright victory. For example, in the GT3 climate where I am involved now you have ten different manufacturers all competing and racing with each other. Would you ever participate in F1 with Strakka? Unfortunately, No. The budgets involved in F1 are a little bit beyond our reach. Could we see Strakka build a road car or partner with a manufacturer? We have done that before, in 2014 we partnered with a Le Mans Prototype manufacturer called Dome, and we actually built the Strakka Dome S103. We took that car to Le Mans and with further development could have made that a very competitive car, but unfortunately the regulations have changed and were limited to 4 chassis manufacturers in WEC and

20

2018

21

2018

Le Mans. That was a big shame, and it was our first effort to personally build and being involved in the construction of a chassis. We are very happy where we are with our current relationship with Mercedes like I said it’s a heavy partnership and huge Mercedes AMG involvement, so I see no reason to change that for the future. Do you consider self-driving cars as the future in races? Would you develop one in Strakka? Not in races, no. I think the human element is the part in racing that I particularly enjoy. What exactly is Strakka Performance? SP is a branch of Strakka Racing, primarily and currently focussing on elite driver performance and training. The main focus is on driver wellbeing training and recovery, currently limited to being based in the UK as a dual faculty facility joining the Strakka Racing team; however, we have plans to expand and move down to Monaco and expand throughout elite sport in general. Watch this space! What advice would you give to someone who starts now in motor racing? What is the best advice you’ve been given? I think the best advice I can give to anyone in motorsport is never to stop believing. You will be continued to be told that you can’t do it or you shouldn’t do it and that requires a lot of finance, but I am a firm believer that if something is meant to be it will be. There are opportunities out there, and you have to keep pushing and keep believing. The best advice someone gave me is- The minute you stop enjoying it, you need to retire. I believe that mindset is the key to any top performer and that is something that I’ve learned myself personally from being relatively inexperienced. Being able to compete at an elite level with a healthy mindset you can achieve anything you put your mind to do.

22

What do you seek for in young talent as a mentor or coach? It’s the whole package. Very often people look for just a lap time, and I am far more interested in an overall package, personality, and the right mindset. I believe that mindset is the key to any top performer and that is something that I’ve learned myself personally from being relatively inexperienced. Being able to compete at an elite level with a healthy mindset you can achieve anything you put your mind to do. This is something that really 2018

23

2018

stands out currently in the young talent that I am involved with, and they have an incredibly good mindset, they may not be winning everything at the moment, but their mindset in and off the circuit is something that really needs to be commended and I am sure one day it will be transformed into to top results.

I like to surf, I love to do general fitness all the time. My coolest experience for sure would be the privilege to fly in a Buccaneer fighter jet above Cape Town pulling 11.5 G and flying at about 1000mph above 50 feet was pretty insane experience and I am very grateful I was able to do that.

What is the most common mistake all young drivers do? I think allowing the Ego is the biggest self-destruct for any talent and that is something that the age and experience can teach you. Ego can be your biggest enemy.

What are Strakka Racing’s future plans? Which is your next step? Currently, we are about to sign a multi-year partnership with Mercedes AMG, where we would compete in the Intercontinental GT Challenge across the globe and the European Blancpain GT championship. For me, that is where our current focus is. We have just won the Pro-Am championship with car 42, and we are hoping to repeat that and try to take on the Pro category and win the Intercontinental Cup. That is where the energy of the team will be focussed.

Away from the track, what are your interests? What was your coolest experience ever? I love sports in general, anything ocean related or on the mountains. I am a big skier from childhood, and obviously from childhood

he Monaco Yacht Show is the world leader event in superyachting. From 26 to 29 September 2018 there was an outstanding fleet of 120 superyachts on display in the iconic Port Hercules. Since 1991 the MYS represents the pinnacle of the superyacht lifestyle against the glamorous backdrop of Monaco. The world’s most respected shipyards annually display 120 extraordinary superyachts and megayachts, of which 40 new launches are unveiled in a worldwide debut every year. This high-scale event is recognized and supported by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, who is a regular guest at the event. Can you believe that only 32 superyachts were on display in 1991? And, even by the 8th edition, there were just 80 yachting related exhibitors at the show against 580 exhibitors

hailing from 38 different countries in 2018. However, several exciting initiatives at the Show prove that organizers are not going to rest on their well-deserved laurels. In fact, the Show is proving that they are dedicated to expanding and future-proofing their success with developments such as the Monaco Yacht

On docks, the MYS curates the showcase of a selection of 580 leading companies in the industry: from the most reputable superyacht builders and nautical suppliers, top yacht designers, luxury manufactures and the best brokerage houses to the most sought-after tenders and water toys, prestige cars, helicopter and private jet manufacturers. The Show’s VIP visitor program, the Sapphire Experience, and the Monaco Yacht Summit have over the last three years become very popular among the potential buyers and charterers who are thus initiated by the MYS into the superyachting world. 150 VIP visitors, mostly from the USA or Eastern Europe, were directly introduced by the Show’s organizers to brokers and builders, with individual visits to several yachts for each one of them. The 3rd Monaco Yacht Summit, a confidential tai-

lor-made event staged on the eve of the Show, brought together 35 participants and a panel of industry experts to discuss the various subjects linked with different sectors of yachting. This initiative helps to educate the future owners who are more and more involved and who will shape the future of superyachting.

The yachts at this year’s edition are slightly larger, with an average length of 51.5m for the motor yachts on display compared to an average length of 49.5m for the last three editions. The sailing yachts also are larger, measuring 45.6m vs 43.8m for the last three years. Not only the average length has increased, but also the average volume, which went up by almost 15%, from an average 623GT over the past three editions to an average 714GT in 2018. The same pattern can be seen in the average value of yachts on display, which has increased to EUR27 million this year, compared to an average EUR25.9 million.

Over the last 5 years we have been extremely proud to have partnered with iconic brands such as Red Bull racing, Jo Malone, Harrods, Alexander James Interiors, the Red Arrows and many more… What does “Sunseeker lifestyle” mean? The events that we organize for our clients are emblematic of the ‘Sunseeker Lifestyle’. This year we organized Sunseeker Owners cruises in Greece, France, Croatia, Spain and the UK which epitomize our ideals and what we consider to be the Sunseeker Lifestyle and dream. Each cruise brings together 15 to 30 Sunseeker yachts and has our owners cruising from one location to another over several days, while we organize dining in restaurants, parties, cocktail evenings and more… We strongly believe that owning a Sunseeker is more than just yacht ownership, it’s a lifestyle choice and most importantly being part of the Sunseeker Family.

The Story Of Success Have you always wanted to be a model? Maybe since the age of 14. I have always loved to leaf through beautiful fashion tabloids, and once teachers from the modeling agency came to our school. So I was very interested and decided to take part in the auditions. How did your modeling career start? It all started in my hometown, Novosibirsk. There were many photo shootings, my first portfolio was created here. In Siberia there are many great photographers. And I signed my first model contract in Beijing. My mom was very supportive, she even helped me to pack the suitcase. Shootings for which brands were the most remarkable for you? We created several very cool catalogues for top brands of winter clothing and evening dresses in Beijing, and made shows in Victoria Secret style. In Bangkok, TVC for cosmetic brands, campaigns for shop-

What is the main difference between modeling in Asia, Russia and Europe? Yes, there are some differences. Asia can give you a good start in modeling career, but when the model has already had a name and experience, it is possible to sign contracts with the top European brands. Who is your favorite designer? All my favorite designers are Italian. The only exception is Chanel and Philipp Plein. What is beauty to you? And do you think you need to be beautiful to become a successful model? Beauty is subjective. For me, the most important thing is the glint in the eyes. Who is a style icon for you? It’s a Ukrainian supermodel Snezhana Onopko. What are your hobbies? I am interested in contemporary art. I often visit exhibitions, openings of private galleries (Paris, Berlin), Garage Museum. I was at English Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses. I am also fond of traveling. What is the most difficult in modeling? Patience, sociability and professionalism. And you should never be late! What are your future plans? Me on the Vogue cover Do you have a beauty rule that you never break? Yes! I always remove my makeup before going to bed. What sports do you do? Gym, Pilates, and I love to swim. What piece of advice would you give to young models? How to stand out? Just believe in yourself, pursue your ambition and work hard! Self-improvement is a must! Not only your physical characteristics are important, but also your unique personality.

Haute Couture You graduated with a Degree in Engineering and Architecture from the American University of Beirut and got an MBA from the Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Did it help you in your work as a designer? My education is a crucial aspect of my success as a designer. It broadened my view and shaped my sense of space. From a business point of view, it also helped me in managing a successful enterprise, because running your own fashion house requires a broad array of skills. Could you describe a woman who wears Gaby Charbachy? It’s a confident woman, who enjoys pushing her limits and stepping out of the traditional boundaries. Could you characterize your dresses in 3 words? Feminine, edgy, present. When you provide a custom-made service, do you work with the client personally or you have a team of designers? It depends on the location, because the brand is presented worldwide. I do have a team of designers working with the clientele. But sometimes, I do this personally — in our showroom in Lebanon or when I travel for various events around the world.

LAT is the flagship boutique of Lebanese designer Gaby Charbachy. Through the last couple of years it has evolved into a more private and personalized haute couture brand. Gaby is known for his special attention to details and technically challenging cuts. “I design dreams” — this is his main concept. Let’s get to know this talented designer better.

What celebrities and trendsetters choose your dresses? Many local and international celebrities wear my dresses. I collaborate with artists in music videos and on the red carpet, and had appearances in Oscars, Cannes Film Festival, Grammy Award, etc. Most recently, I was honored to attend the Butterfly Ball Monaco, where I dressed many trendsetters including the host of the event, Modesta Vzesniauskaite. Tell us more about your new collection. I’ve recently presented the Spring Summer 2019 collection during the PAP Fashion Week in Paris. The collection’s story is manifested by a strong silhouette definition. Solid materials like crepe, satin, lace and three-dimensional embroidery are mixed with structural volumetric details of impalpable fabrics such as tulle, organza and gazar. The color palette is vividly defined by contrasting strong colors to their respective pastel families. Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

43

2018

Just living my life. I try to enrich my experience through art, travel, literature and human contact. This inspires me to find beauty in everything and adapt it in my designs. Where can we purchase your dresses? The Brand is available in about 30 countries worldwide, in more that 75 points of sale. Spanning from North to South America, Western and Europe, the Middle East and China. It is also sold online through various portals and directly through our website http://flatfashion.com What are your plans for future? I am planning to launch a ready to wear line sometime in the future. This project is still under consideration, but I am very excited about it. The line will be casual chic, addressed to a wider audience. What is the iconic figure you would like to wear your brand? That is tough question. So I will answer it with my heart, and not with my mind. I would like Charlize Therone to wear one of my dresses, because I like her as a person and I admire her work.

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE John Caudwell: «I’m not a dreamer. I just own challenges and don’t stop until I achieve the right result.» John is a born entrepreneur and he discovered his commercial and creative streak at a young age. He was growing worms in a box under his mother’s bed, which he would then sell to fishermen; collecting gift coupons from cigarette packets and selling the goods he bought with them; selling motorcycle clothing — a business so successful that the manufacturer eventually blocked his supply after complaints from competitors. 54

2018

T

his year’s Butterfly Ball Monaco was held on 7th October 2018 and it was its 3rd year Gala Dinner for Caudwell Children Charity. The founder of this charitable organisation is John Caudwell, an entrepreneur, business leader, and philanthropist. In the mid-1980s he turned a communications problem into a business opportunity, founding Caudwell Group, the pioneering telecommunications company. He also invested in fashion and real estate. His Caudwell Collection includes Parc Du Cap, Les Oliviers, Villa St. George, Villa Margaux and Villa Tennis in Cap d’Antibes, France.

John is very active in the business world, but his main passion is philanthropy. These are soon to be joined by the Audley Square development in the heart of London’s Mayfair. Thanks to his success in business, he counts himself lucky to have a chance to support the projects he is most passionate about. John is committed to giving over half his wealth to charitable causes during and after his lifetime. He received the Noble Gift Philanthropreneur Award in 2012 for his dedication to charity work, and continues to commit his time and money for vitally important causes. We had a chance to find out more about John and his projects.

Charity Your charity work is truly amazing. Tell us more about Caudwell Children. Caudwell Children was founded 20 years ago and for all this time it has been transforming the lives of disabled children across the UK. The charity acts as a safety net for families who are unable to gain the help they need. It was founded to change the future of children with various diseases providing access to the services, equipment, therapies and treatments they need and increase awareness and understanding of the needs of disabled children. We have just built a new 60,000 square foot building with the aim of helping even more children, but also to prove to the medical professionals of the world that they can intervene with autism, and improve the lives of the children and their families. There are illnesses that can’t be properly diagnosed or which are not being given corresponding attention to, such as autism, Lyme disease, PANS/ PANDAS, etc. One of your projects is Caudwell LymeCo. Why do you want to draw attention to this disease? I have a deep and personal connection to Lyme Disease, as eleven members of my family have been diagnosed with the illness. As a result, over the last four years I increasingly found out just how much suffering worldwide is being caused by this potentially horrible illness. The situation is completely unacceptable, as the authorities do not take responsibility for what I believe is one of the biggest health threats to our generation. I wrote to Health Secretary offering substantial funding to commission desperately needed research into Lyme Disease, hoping my commitment could act as a catalyst to end government inaction. Up to yet the Government have made no commitment. I am so desperately sorry that so many people are suffering and that the government constantly appears to do nothing. They responded in July to say they were looking into it, but as yet nothing more has happened, and unfortunately this is typically the way their irresponsible activity causes huge amounts of human suffering. The same with PANS/PANDAS. PANS and PANDAS are illnesses, which

To date, the charity has supported over 35,000 children and families, providing ÂŁ40 million worth of services.

2018

result in inflammation in a specific part of the brain causing devastating psychiatric problems in children. They are rarely diagnosed in the UK or other parts of the world for that matter, due to the lack of understanding and awareness within the NHS. I have recently donated significant funds towards further research and treatment and I will continue to fight this battle. Caudwell Children’s Butterfly Ball is one of the most luxurious annual fundraising events attracting massive publicity. Why is it called “Butterfly Ball”? One of the kids we helped, Tilly Griffiths, who was born with spinal muscular atrophy, once made a beautiful collage of butterflies with her sister. There were poor, withering butterflies on the bottom of the collage and nice, beautiful butterflies on the top of it, symbolizing the kids after Caudwell children. This artwork was auctioned at the Caudwell Children charity ball and Tilly’s idea raised £780,000 for the charity to buy powered wheelchairs like the one Caudwell Children donated to her. Now she is 18 and she is a student at Stanford University. I visited her three weeks ago and she was doing great and coping extremely well with the huge challenge. How much money did you raise at this year’s Butterfly ball in Monaco? The weekend’s cycling and Butterfly Ball Monaco raised over £600,000 which will be used to provide life-changing support for children all over the UK. Your partner is a cycling champion and former Olympian Modesta Vzesniauskaite. Does she support you in your charity work? Yes, she is extremely kind, ethical and moral and determined to help make the world a better place. Most of her time now is spent on doing Charity work. We even met at a charitable event, it was a bike ride supported by Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation cycling from St. Tropez to Monaco. She was the driving force of a sponsored bike ride which took place from 5th — 7th October this year, cycling from Cassis to Monaco, and then ending on the Sunday night with a fantastic Gala Dinner at the Hermitage Hotel. I admire her for all her fantastic values. What is your biggest dream? I’m not a dreamer, you know. I just own challenges and don’t stop until I achieve the right result. One of my challenges is to ena-

ble disabled children to lead an active and independent life reaching their full potential. I am determined to make the world a better place for them. Another is to make the world properly aware of Lyme Disease and Pans Pandas, so that the medical profession diagnose, treat and cure.

THE MONTE CARLO POLO TROPHY the most glittering occasion in Monaco

T

he Monte Carlo Polo Club was founded in 2012 and is one of the world leading Polo teams. Wearing the colors of the Principality of Monaco, Monte Carlo Polo Club play in International Polo Tournaments alongside a sensational series of Polo Tournaments in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The Monte Carlo Polo Trophy is a major international sporting event in Monaco’s celebrated festive calendar, attracting an illustrious gathering of royalty, aristocracy, business people and international media opinion. Its founder and President Francesco Mitrano strongly believes that polo being the noble sport specifically highlights the values of family bonding. It brings together people sharing common values, all keen to encourage a younger generation to participate, learn and above all enjoy. He aims to progress to an international level and we had a chance to find out more. Tell us more about your way in polo. I’ve been riding horses since I was a child and took part in horse jumping competitions. In 2006 I met Salvatore Ferragamo, who created the Florence polo club which I joined and from that moment my passion for polo started. Why did you decide to develop polo in Monaco? Polo is a very aristocratic and noble sport and I thought that it would match perfectly with Mona-

co. So, I founded this association — The Monte Carlo Polo Club and decided to organize the first event, which was so successful that the International Federation of Polo wanted me to become the President of Federation in Monaco. So since 2013 I’ve been honored to be its president. This year Monte-Carlo Polo Trophy was held for the 6th time. Tell us more about the event. Yes, it was organized by the Monte-Carlo Polo Club on October 12–14th. It’s a truly Monegasque event, as all the galas and the horse parade took place in Monaco, but the matches have always been

Francesco Mirtrano: “I have been riding horses since I was a child!” held outside Monaco, about 15–20 minutes away. And this year we were going to play on the beach, as beach polo is becoming more and more popular lately — in Dubai, Miami and all over the world. But because of the weather conditions the location was changed. What teams and sponsors participated in Monte-Carlo Polo Trophy 2018? Our main sponsor USPA (US Polo Association) has been our faithful partner for 5 years. For the first time Il Borro winery of Salvatoro Ferragamo participated in the event. Another partner was Duncan and Co. The Monte Carlo Polo

Club team was supported by Tenuta di San Giusto accommodations. The game was quite tough because of meteorological conditions. Anyway, it was a great game and we are proud to win it. What other events are you planning to organize? Our aim is to organize several events worldwide. We are a mobile federation. After our success, here in Monaco, we were invited to play in Dubai, in Abu Dhabi actually, on 26th of November. It will be a friendly match between two federations — the Monte Carlo Polo Club Federation and UAE Polo Federation — Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club. Last winter we also had events in Brazil and Poland. And we are planning to have an amazing event next September in Venice during the Film Festival. We are planning to produce a very glamorous movie about polo, you know. I am sure that such a beautiful and noble sport as polo should promote the appealing image of beautiful Monaco worldwide and make it even stronger. What charity foundations do you support? For all these years we’ve supported many charity foundations such as the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, Princess Stephanie’s foundation and others. This year we are helping a Monegasque Association, which is a very noble association supporting sick, disa- bled and underprivileged children of Monaco.

What did you feel when you heard your name on stage? It was quite unexpected, but I was so happy! After all, to represent your country is a great responsibility, but to win — is a true happiness! What are your impressions about the contest? I participated in many competitions of a kind and attended such events in different countries, and I can say that Miss TheGlam Monaco International was organized very worthily and it is obvious that the organizers put their heart in this event and hold it very professionally. Was your family supportive? My daughter watched the contest online in Instagram and was worried about me. My husband was with me all the time and motivated me to win. I am so thankful to him: he inspired me of being the best! It’s not your first title, but what has changed with the winning of “Miss TheGlam Monaco International»? I decided that I would no longer participate in beauty contests. I think that I’ve already achieved everything I wanted and what I was striving for in this kind of contests. Now I continue to gain knowledge in nutrition and attend congresses, seminars, master classes. What are you dreaming about? Now I do vocal training. I’ve already recorded a few songs and we’ve shot a video for one of them. My dream is to record my solo album and present it all over the world. What beauty routines you can’t imagine your day without? My morning begins with a morning exercise and stretching. Then I take an alternating shower, cleanse my skin well and moisturize it with the cold mineral water. In the evening, I use natural face masks and a moisturizing body cream. If I don’t get home very late, I like to get a massage. What is the most popular direction in nutriciology now? The most popular today is the individual impact of different products on every person, both at the moment and genetically. I never follow fashionable diets and support individual approach to nutrition. If a certain diet is suitable for your friend. It doesn’t mean that it will suit you. Everyone has a list of permissible products and their effects on the body is different.

TOP myths about healthy nutrition from Irina Pisareva 1. The less fat is in the product, the more useful it is! Only trans fats and saturated fats are harmful. But vegetable and animal fats, contained in fish, nuts and dairy products, must be ingested in moderate quantities. 2. Reducing calories is the only way to lose weight! Reducing calories is quite natural and logical when losing weight. But nutrition must remain well-balanced. You should consume little less calories than you spend during the day. 3. Having snacks is bad! Having snacks is a must! It’s important though to choose the right snacks - nuts, dried figs, baked apples, coconut water, natural yoghurt, celery, hummus, etc. 4. All kinds of chocolate are harmful! Not all kinds of chocolate harm the figure. There is bitter chocolate, having plenty of vitamins. It strengthens the immune system and stimulates mental activity. And you will only benefit from one piece of bitter chocolate in the morning! 67

LUXPRO MONACO 2018 a milestone of B2B friendly rendezvous

B

usiness networking in the form of cold face-to-face meetings does’t work anymore. Today networking is not about collecting contacts; it’s about planting relations. On this basis, LUXPRO Monaco 2018, at the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco, on Thursday 18th October 2018, offered a selected audience, coming from all over the world, the chance to exchange their ideas and learn the latest trends in business, wealth and luxury through a set of interactive case studies from highly qualified international experts from Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Switzerland and United Kingdom. All that accompanied by gourmet treats within the most glamourous Monegasque location. Being held in various countries, including Switzerland, Russia, UK, LUXPRO is an invitation-only event for business owners, top managers and High Net Worth Individuals. This is an excellent opportunity to hear in-depth case studies and to gain insight into the latest trends in business, wealth and luxury. LUXPRO Monaco arose from the experience of Gulshat UZENBAEVA, founder and CEO of LUXPRO Business Events Company. She has been acting for many years as a top level financial adviser, brand ambassador and luxury-sector author, based in the Principality of Monaco, organizing cultural, art, social and charity events with more than three thousand participants, including H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. However, what really pushed Gulshat to set up this special business-oriented hub? We had a chance to ask her in person.

70

2018

Gulshat, how did you come to the idea of LUXPRO? Well, I have a financial background, having worked in the banking industry for 8 years. When I moved to Monaco I started to organize various cultural and charity events, combining this role with my main job in the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (Coutts & Co Private Bank), and subsequently retraining in the Art business as a Gallery Director. My friends often asked me to get them acquainted with other wealthy and influential people and I started to think about the high-level event, which would bring business community together. Working as a managing director of the retail bank allowed me to meet Sergey SANDER, my business partner, who has a relevant experience in premium property marketing in United Kingdom, Switzerland, France and Monaco. Together we wanted to create something new and strongly requested at top-level management. So what is the major idea of LUXPRO Business events? The major idea of invitation-only business events is to encourage businessmen both to talk together and exchange views with experts in a peer review approach aimed at improving the relationship with clients who can even be shared by different companies, according to their needs. Wealthy people come here and exchange their knowledge, experience and what is very important — clients.

71

Business

Your company is based in Monaco, but you held the events already in Switzerland, Russia and the UK. What other locations you would like to explore? It is no accident that our company is based here since I do believe that the Principality brings many financial benefits that should be better known abroad besides the glamourous Monegasque lifestyle. But of course we are planning to develop worldwide and we are happy to receive a very positive feedback from all LUXPRO guests and that all participants come back to LUXPRO each time, proposing us new destinations like China, UAE, Japan and Turkey. That proves a win-win success! LUXPRO is a by-invitation-only event, so how can one become its guest? There are two options. Either you can become our partners, or our existing partners should invite you. The reason for this is the top level of our participants, who prefer to have business with people from the same social circle. Another important speaker and moderator at this event we were happy to meet was Alexander JOHNSON — a businessman and lecturer at Oxford University in Leadership and Entrepreneurship. He was previously the youngest CEO on the London Stock Exchange and today he is a founder and investor in more than 30 companies across a wide range of industries, from technology to finance.

Tell us more about your educational programmes. It was a privilege to be brought in to speak at such a prestigious university as Oxford University and at the same time, I realized the benefit to have excess to such amazing new generation of people. So the biggest motivation was the idea that I could start to train people at the university level and actually start empowering them. I am not an academic, I am someone who is out there building successful businesses and I try to give my students the real world training and knowledge that they can use in their work place. If you look at the recent training program that we did outside Oxford we ended up hiring 60% of the classroom into three different organizations which are part of my group. What did you like the most about being the part of LUXPRO events? Yes, so far I took part as a speaker in more than 50 events, I spoke in America, in Asia, in the UK and all around Europe and even in Moscow. But LUXPRO events is truly unique. It’s been a very important change that happened in over the last 50 years — we went from being very hard to get information to now being very easy to get all the information. There is a famous quote, which goes “figures don’t lie but liars do figure”, so you can’t really trust all the statistics you are given and the idea of the events like LUXPRO is that you meet specialists and get knowledge on a wide range of topics you can trust. The participants, the people who are invited, the speakers — they all are carefully selected to bring value.

U-BOAT BY ITALO FONTANA: FROM GRANDFATHER TO GRANDSON The watches with identity

I

n Lucca, Italy, in 1942, the Officine Fontana, crafters of precision timepieces, received a prestigious commission from the Italian Navy: to design and build a new model of watch for the army. This challenge meant satisfying the high quality standards of the Navy and respecting very precise technical specifications, but above all guaranteeing maximum visibility in any light condition. However, the project never went ahead and production did not start up for political reasons. Decades later Italo Fontana, looking through his grandfather Ilvo Fontana’s old papers found the distinctive original drawings, color samples and innovative materials that were lovingly preserved for more than 60 years.

Starting in 2000, for seven yearshepatientlyworked on a completely new look for watches, based on hand-crafted pieces, characterized by their strong identity, easy to read in all weather conditions and boasting unique, bold and distinctive design and characteristics. 75

2018

U-Boat also exert a lot of effort into offering the perfect straps with each of their watches. There are so many wonderfully conceived options that there is an entire catalogue available just for straps. Swapping straps is clearly encouraged because there is a special tool included in the packaging to allow easy removal of the lug to lug bars holding the strap in place. Despite the thickness of the leather strap the U-42 is very comfortable to wear and never becomes fatiguing. We had a chance to talk to Italo Fontana and find out more about his unique manufacture. This was the advent of U-Boat watches. A hugely successful brand that is now globally recognized as creating oversized luxury timepieces. Their strength lies in their soul: you can see that Italo designed all of them himself; they have an identity and a powerful image, and they can be recognized from a distance. The Tuscan designer’s dynamic creativity has now generated a series of innovations: from the unique rotating bezel lock mechanism and ingenious crown system to the first ultra-slim U-Boat.

Interestingly that it was James Bond who inspired Italo for the creation of his ultra-slim watch. He was thinking of it on Bond’s wrist, when he was coming out of the water wearing under his wetsuit that immaculate white tuxedo… 76

Your watches are very comfortable and well thought out… Yes, we patented the automatic crown extraction system, aiming to safeguard the nails of the ladies, but men like it, too. Do you design the watches by yourself? What about the mechanism? Well, we buy the best Swiss mechanisms and do certain modifications. Regarding design — yes, I do it by myself. Let’s say I’m not keen on following trends and I prefer to go my own way, I only do and create what I like. I work with passion, with all of my heart. Tell us more about the philosophy of your brand. I started to create watches 20 years ago and there were no big watches at that time on the market. I wanted to create a very masculine watch, an exclusive one. My watches have their own character, their identity, they are not for everybody. I’d say that I design the watch of my own dreams, and that somehow reflects who I am.

On the other hand, a big, bulky case is no longer the only option because we also have smaller models, a better fit for those who have a slender wrist. But even in those sizes, U-Boat style is unmistakable. Many masculine celebrities choose your watches… Yes, and I am proud that such great people as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone prefer my brand. It’s so nice to find out from the media and magazines that such people like my brand. But now you also have the lady’s line, right? Yes, there is a new line of lady’s watches coming in 2019 actually. Well, men often give presents to their ladies. I personally also need nice watches as gifts for beautiful ladies too, you know. And I didn’t want to buy another brand, so I had to create a lady’s line. Where do you find inspiration? I find it in my everyday life, actually. I like diving, racing and have many other active hobbies… You just don’t need to think too much, just live your life — and inspiration comes.

LEGENDARY PATISSERIE

RIVIERA Address: 27 Boulevard des Moulins, 98000 Monaco.

P

atisserie Riviera is one of Monaco’s oldest bakeries dating from 1955. It’s a traditional patisserie with wonderful specialty pastries like the Buns (brioche with orange-blossom water and raisins) and Tresse, a brioche stuffed with almond cream, not forgetting the shop’s own chocolates. Alexander Seleznev, better known as Chef Alex, is the third owner of

Riviera (the previous owners had been running it for 35 years). He is a true artisan, who has won foodies’ hearts in Russia with his many TV programs and books in just a few years. Then he moved to Monaco so we can discover his delicious creations, e.g. the Medovic (a cake with honey and sour cream), «Gâteau Russe» (almond biscuit and praline cream) and even genuine New York cheesecake.

I’ve always liked the fresh bread fragrance. My mother and grandmother used to bake a lot. We didn’t have mixers and had to knead the dough with our hands. I still like to mix the dough. Alex, how it all started? I’ve always liked the fresh bread fragrance. My mother and grandmother used to bake a lot. We didn’t have mixers and had to knead the dough with our hands. I still like to mix the dough. How do the Monegasques find the «Gâteau Russe»? It’s interesting that the 80-year-old owners of a chain of confectioneries from Nice shared their recipe and its name with us. They told us that it was the favorite cake of Catherine II. Now “Gâteau Russe” is a very popular dessert among Monegasques, actually this is our most popular dessert! I make three huge formations per week. There are nut layers, meringue made from unrefined almonds and cream praline (caramel with nuts). This cake is very light and spongy. In France, there is also a similar dessert called Succes with praline and almond powder, the difference is only in proportions. You are a top celebrity in Russia, why did you move to Monaco and started to work so hard instead of retiring on your laurels? Yes, if a few years ago I was told that I would get up at five am and go to bake buns, I would have laughed. At 28 I became the champion of Russia in confectionery. Since then there have been many victories and medals, several times there was a feeling that I had hit my ceiling. Over time, I realized that I was so closed that I didn’t need anyone at all. The books have already been written, the programs have been made, the mass production has been entered. Another five years — and they would have forgotten about me. I realized that I had to push my way out of the comfort zone. I started from scratch. And here I am, in Monaco, making cakes every morning and people here appreciate that it’s me, and not some kind of hired worker. In Russia, owners usually don’t stand behind

81

the counter. And in Monaco it is very important for people to see that you work. But why Riviera? Well, I was often invited on various events to Monaco — private orders, contests, charity events. Once I baked a cake, which was put up for auction, There I was noticed. And I was one of the first to know that one of the oldest confectioneries in Monte Carlo is put out for sale. I was so inspired that I informed the owner about the decision on the same day. Did you have some special guests? I was honored to meet Charlene, Princess of Monaco. She came on the eve of the national holiday — Prince’s Day. With a personal assistant, without safeguard and ordered a portion of «Gâteau Russe», a cup of coffee and a couple of pieces of cheesecake for twins. The staff were embarrassed when, after finishing the meal, she began to clean the dishes, trying to take them to the sink. Then I ran out, began to ask her not to worry and accept cheesecakes as a gift.

Why you are working only with Burmese rubies? Our concept is dealing with top of the top material to make the fantastic designs. There is no compromise between quality and design, we deal with so-called real high jewelry — everything is top from design to quality and fabrication. All the stages, starting with mining and cutting the rough to making a sketch and producing the jewelry piece in our studio, — everything is perfectly integrated which enables us to control the quality and choose the best stones for our production. Could you tell us more about the exhibition of more than 100 jewels recently held at the Hermitage Hotel? It is the largest and most valuable collection of natural Burmese rubies of exceptional quality ever held in one place. This collection is only made possible because of our family history of collecting stones for over 100 years. And each and every piece has inspiration of its own era. So every piece of the collection is an art piece itself. Every earring, every necklace or a ring has a history behind it. It’s a piece of art, which cannot be repeated. You said that every piece has its histo-

ry behind it… What does it mean? At Faidee, we believe that every ruby has a special history and an individuality of its own. And it is with every distinct cut that we hope to capture the stone’s unique personality. Turning rough stones into the finest rubies is an art we have the utmost respect for. Our master artisans expertly cut and polish rubies to perfection to bring out their remarkable beauty. To know the quality of a diamond you need to put it into the glass of water. How do you know the quality of a ruby? When it comes to the colored stones, you should pay attention to the color — it should be nice red. Second thing is clarity. Third — its origin. A good ruby is only a Burmese ruby! Of course, there are rubies from Africa and other places, but they do not have such investment potential as ours do. Where do you find inspiration for your pieces? We are drawing inspiration from the natural world around us, Faidee jewelry encapsulates the awe and splendor of nature’s creations!

Each exercise starts with a Yoga phase, then comes to the more dynamical Face Fitness, then lifting fixation and ends up with a muscle vibration to eliminate the excess of lactic acid. However, bear in mind that, as with any sport, results are in accordance with efforts! Such a unique combination is known to give the longest lasting result and it is so much exceeding expectations that it looks incredible. To understand better, the skin is directly attached to the muscles therefore when muscles become more tonic, the skin naturally gets a lifting effect. You can see the ingenuity of the method by the positioning of hands on the face in order to avoid new wrinkles forming. This is the guarantee that the method is not only effective, but as well safe. How can you guarantee that the method is safe? The results I obtained with clients within past 10 years are obvious. My method is the only one having the privilege to be represented during Anti-Aging Congresses. Results have been dermatologically observed in the laboratory of the Rome Dermatologic Institute by Dr. Giulio Ferranti, anatomo pathologist in dermatology. The Royals

THE MONACO ROYAL FAMILY Monaco is as well known for its royal family as it is for its casino, and the glamour of the city comes from a combination of this prestige and money. The official name for the Monaco royal family is the House of Grimaldi and the current prince, Albert II – the son of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly - can trace lineage all the way back to the original Grimaldis. Prince Albert married Charlene Wittstock, a former South African Olympian. The couple have two children together, twins Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, and have been helping to maintain Princess Grace’s legacy.

THE PLAYBOY PRINCE

C

harlene and Albert tied the knot in 2011 after five years together, going public with their relationship at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. But during his days as a bachelor, the so-called playboy prince was famous for his relationships with beautiful women from all over the world, including top rank celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brooke Shields.

Prince Albert himself competed in the bobsled at every Winter Olympics from Calgary to Salt Lake City. 88

2018

ONE OF THE RICHEST MONARCHIES IN THE WORLD

P

rince Albert II has ruled since 2005 and holds a large political role, despite the fact that Monaco has an elected legislature. He owns about a fourth of the land he reigns over; the Philadelphia-area home of his mother, Grace Kelly, which he purchased in 2016 for an estimated $754,000; an antique car collection; shares in the Monte Carlo resort Societe des Bains de Mer; and a pricey stamp collection, all of which contribute to the House of Grimaldi’s net worth.

PRINCESS GRACE

W

hile the tiny Mediterranean nation of Monaco has long been a destination for Francophile sun seekers, but it first dawned on the America consciousness when Grace Kelly married Prince Rainer III in 1956. Kelly, an Oscar-winner actress and Philadelphia-native, Princess Grace, as she was there-after styled, went on to live a fascinating life. She and Prince Rainer had three children together — Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie. Tragically, Princess Grace died relatively young, in a car accident in 1982. Grace Kelly was a veritable style icon. The actor-turned-princess had a wardrobe bursting at the seams with dresses by Hollywood costume designers like Helen Rose (who also created her wedding dress), as well as Christian Dior gowns, and Hermès bags in every color and design — including the Kelly bag, which was renamed in her honor. Kelly also collected jewelry, favoring brands like Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier. Among her collection of jewels, her most revered was her engagement ring from Prince Rainier of Monaco; a 10.47-carat, emerald-cut diamond by Cartier.

Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco certainly inherited more than just her captivating looks from her grandmother Grace Kelly; she’s also following in her style footsteps. The 30-year-old monarch and equestrian, who is a permanent fixture on the front rows of international fashion shows, continuously offers up lessons in understated, laid-back glamour.

NOT ONLY OLYMPIAN IN THE FAMILY TREE

C

harlene Wittstock is not only Olympian in the family. But he was just following in a healthy family tradition: his maternal grandfather – Grace Kelly’s father, Jack Kelly Snr – who was the child of Irish immigrants from Newport in Mayo, was a triple Olympic gold medal winner in rowing. And Grace’s brother – Albert’s uncle – John B. Kelly Jnr (who was known as ‘Kell’) was also a four-time Olympian in rowing.

The Royals

THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY They are undoubtedly one of the most famous in the World. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch ever, having been ruling as Head of State since 1953, amassing a huge 65 years. Prince Charles is the heir apparent, and will eventually succeed the Queen. Prince William is second in line, whilst his son Prince George is third. The Queen and Prince Philip have four royal residences — Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the little known Hillsborough Castle, in Northern Ireland, which can also be used by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. And those are just the crown estates! Her Majesty’s private properties consist of Sandringham House, where she famously spends Christmas, Balmoral Castle, Craigowan Lodge and Delnadamph Lodge.

According to the latest revision to the Inheritance Act, the first 6 people in line to the throne aged up to 25 years have to obtain a marriage license from the Queen. If she opposes, there won’t be a wedding. 90

LOVE STORY

O

bviously, the eyes of the whole world were anchored to the families of the two Queen’s grandchildren — William and Harry. Especially now, when the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her fourth child, while the Duchess of Sussex is expecting twins. The two royal courtships couldn’t appear more different. Kate Middleton and Prince William met in college. They didn’t get engaged until 2010, five years after they graduated. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met in 2016, when they were both in their 30s and just about a year later, they announced their engagement. What’s more, while Middleton is British, Prince Harry broke with tradition in some ways by choosing to spend his life with an American divorced woman.

KATE EFFECT VS MEGHAN EFFECT

K

ate Middleton and Meghan Markle are both huge brands. From the moment Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement in 2010, the Duchess of Cambridge became something of a marketing powerhouse and a verifiable “brand” in her own right. The £385 blue Issa dress she wore at the photocall that day sold out within 24 hours on both sides of the Atlantic, boosting annual sales for the London fashion label by 45 per cent. Dubbed the “Kate Effect,” her major fashion influence was again felt by maternity brand Seraphine after the duchess wore one of its dresses for her first official portrait with Prince George, reportedly increasing the brand’s sales by 50%. Kate is estimated to drive more than $1 billion to the UK fashion industry annually. Markle is following in the footsteps of Kate Middleton. The £540 Line the Label coat she wore to announce her engagement sold out within minutes last November and the £45 M&S jumper she wore to visit a Brixton radio station was unavailable in every size by 6pm that day. Such is the public fascination for Meghan’s sense of style that, as with Kate, it seems just about anything she puts on becomes an instant must-have.

The Royals

THE JAPANESE ROYAL FAMILY Japan’s Yamato dynasty traces its origins back to 660, making it the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. The 79-year-old Emperor Akihito has reigned since 1989 and is, according to the legend, the 125th emperor in his line since Emperor Jimmu, said to be a descendant of the legendary sun goddess Amaterasu. The family operates under hereditary, male-only succession rules, although there have been eight empresses in past centuries. Upon the abdication of Akihito, his oldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will assume the Chrysanthemum Throne in the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. Naruhito’s younger brother, Prince Akishino, is next in line. The only other male heir, 10-year-old Prince Hisahito, Akishino’s son, is third in line to the throne.

The marriage rule does not apply to Japan's royal princes, though, who are able to marry whoever they want and confer royal status on their wives. Sons from those marriages - not the daughters - then join the line of succession for the Chrysanthemum Throne.

92

LOVE STORY

P

rincess Mako, the 25-year-old eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito will soon become engaged to law firm worker Kei Komuro. They met in 2012 at a restaurant, when they were both studying at the International Christian University in Tokyo. They postponed their marriage until at least 2020, so they can take more time to mature before making such a big commitment. But there is also one more reason for such a decision. Thus, Princess Mako’s aunt Princess Sayako and the only daughter of Emperor Akihito married a commoner in 2005 — the first time a Japanese royal became a commoner. Her wedding to an urban planner for the Tokyo city government was described as a low-key event. And Sayako was left to adjust to her more humble surrounding: she moved into a one-bedroom apartment, had to learn how to drive, shop in a supermarket and buy furniture.

Japan's imperial law requires a princess to leave the royal family after marrying a commoner. This is not a first case when Japanese royals gave up their status because of falling in love.

SPECIAL ASPECTS OF IMPERIAL HOUSE LAW

B

ut while casting aside the trappings of palace life in order to marry whoever you choose may sound romantic, the fact is Japan’s princesses don’t actually have many other options. Unless they marry a male blood relative — of which there are very few — marrying down is their only choice. Japan’s Imperial Family may be the oldest continuous monarchy in human history, but it’s shrinking, and it may even face a succession crisis in coming decades if more princesses leave the family. Under Imperial House Law — put in place in 1947 during the American occupation of Japan following World War II — princesses who marry commoners must lose their royal status. They get a certain payment — Princess Ayako will receive $1.3 million — but after that, they are expected to look after themselves.

93

The Royals

THE SWEDISH ROYAL FAMILY In 1980, Sweden became the first monarchy to change its succession rights so that the first-born child of the monarch is heir to the throne, regardless of gender, which means Princess Victoria Ingrid Alice Desiree will become queen at the end of her father’s reign, so far of 40 years. King Carl XVI Gustaf, the current monarch, is a ceremonial figure. At age 27, King Carl XVI Gustaf became the seventh king of the House of Bernadotte. His father died in a plane crash a year after his birth, so he inherited the crown from his grandfather.

n 1972, when still the Crown Prince, Carl Gustaf met his German-Brazilian future wife, Silvia Sommerlath, who was born in 1943 in Germany. They met in Munich during the Olympic Games, where Silvia was chief hostess. The couple have three children: Victoria, Carl-Philip and Madeleine. Each one of the siblings is married to a commoner, and has a young family of their own. Victoria, Duchess of Västergötland, also married a commoner. Daniel Westling was her personal trainer, and previously owned a gym as well. Upon their marriage, he gained the title H.R.H. Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. It was not a coincidence that Crown Princess and Daniel chose to get married on 19 June. On that date in 1976, Victoria’s royal parents married.

A trained interpreter without either royal or noble origins, Silvia is the first Swedish queen to have had a professional career.

The Royals

THE NORWEGIAN ROYAL FAMILY The head of the Norwegian royal family is King Harald V, who ascended the throne in 1991, and his wife, Queen Sonja. In a recent interview discussing a visit to Antarctica, he cracked a joke about a research station there called Troll, saying it was named after his wife. But he can do serious too, recently giving a stirring speech in support of gay freedom and religious tolerance. Apart from being a much-liked monarch, Harald is an accomplished sailor, representing Norway in the Olympics three times. He also rowed at Oxford during his time studying history and economics at Balliol. And to mark his 80th birthday in private earlier this year, he took his whole family to South Africa – to go surfing.

Many believed Mette-Marit was unsuitable for the throne because she was a single mother and college dropout, and the father of her son, Marius Borg Høiby, had been convicted for drug possession. But, just like his father, Haakon loved her and married her anyway. Since their marriage in 2001, all suggestions she was not right for the job have melted away, thanks to her championing of humanitarian projects and tireless Royal engagements.

and tailoring and dated Harald in secret for nine years before they were given permission to marry. Apparently, Harald told his father, King Olav V, that if he couldn’t marry Sonja he would never marry at all, leaving their line without an heir. King Harald’s only son and heir to the throne is Prince Haakon, 43. Just like his father, Haakon married a commoner, Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, in 2001.

The Royals

THE DANISH ROYAL FAMILY This family goes back more than 1000 years. In fact, the current Queen, Margrethe II, has a continuous traceable family line that goes all the way back to the age of Vikings. Furthermore, it is one of the oldest continuous monarchies still in existence today. Margrethe succeeded the throne after her father King Frederik IX’s passing in 1972. She became the first female monarch of Denmark since Margrethe I who ruled the Scandinavian countries in 1375-1412.

Interestingly, Queen Margrethe II and the Queen of England are the only two current Queen Regents in the world.

LOVE STORY

I

n June 1967, millions across Denmark celebrated as the then Princess Margrethe married French diplomat Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat. The new royal couple quickly became popular and Count Henri was given the title of “His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark”. They have two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim. Crown Prince Frederik is heir to the throne. In 2004 he married Crown Princess Mary, who was a commoner born in Australia. The couple have four children and the family is widely popular in Denmark. The Crown Prince has even been voted ‘Dane of the Year’ several times.

The Danish royal has also been applauded for her sense of style over the years and in March 2013, The Guardian named her as one of the fifty bestdressed over 50s in the world.

SUMMER CRUISES

G

reenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark as autonomous constituent countries. Since Margrethe II took the throne, she has made an effort to make these countries feel as part of Denmark, too, and she spends a couple of months every summer on her royal ship, Dannebrog named after the Danish flag, sailing around her kingdom. And her son and his wife have given their twins Greenlandic middle names (Minik and Ivalo), under which they are mainly known in Greenland.

ART LOVER

I

n her spare time, Margrethe II enjoys painting and over the years she has held many art shows. Her illustrations were used for the Danish edition of The Lord of the Rings, under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer, after she sent them to J.R.R. Tolkien who was instantly impressed by the royal’s drawings.

The Royals

THE BELGIUM ROYAL FAMILY Belgium’s 53-year-old King Philippe inherited a divided country when he was sworn in July 21, 2013, hours after his father King Albert abdicated. His position is symbolic but important, given Belgium’s current political climate. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium have four children, Princess Eleonore, Prince Gabriel, Princess Elisabeth, and Prince Emmanuel.

When the Royal Family visits the northern part of Belgium (Flanders), the King and Queen expect their children to speak Dutch. Whenever they head to the southern part of Belgium (Wallonia), they ought to speak French.

BILINGUAL KIDS

K

ing Philippe and Queen Mathilde have raised their children bilingual. The four children can fluently speak French and Dutch. At home, the family speaks French, and the children have been attending a Dutch speaking school ever since they began their education.

UNIQUE TRADITION

I

n Belgium, there is a tradition that the King or Queen becomes the godparent whenever a seventh child is born to a family. The family can then request the King (when it’s a boy) or Queen (when it’s a girl) to become their godparent. The godchild will then receive a gift when it’s born, and when the child turns 15, he or she is invited to the Christmas Concert at the Royal Palace of Brussels. So far, Queen Mathilde has become the godmother of two girls. King Philippe is the godfather of two boys.

THE JORDAN’S ROYAL FAMILY King Abdullah II of Jordan is not a typical Arab ruler. Named after his great-grandfather, King Abdullah (also known as the founder of modern Jordan), he is widely popular both locally and internationally for having maintained Jordan’s stability despite overwhelming odds. The king is considered the 41st generation direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, through his belonging to the Hashemite family, which has ruled Jordan since 1921. The Royal Hashemite family has been a key player in the Arab world for almost 72 years now. King Abdullah took over the throne after his late father, King Hussein passed away in 1999. Jordan’s King Abdullah II is married to Queen Rania and they have four children, Crown Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma and Prince Hashem. Interestingly, he was never expected to become King of Jordan. His brother, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, was considered by all to be next in line for the throne. But their father had a change of heart, and instead arranged for Abdullah take his place as king.

ROYAL EDUCATION

D

uring the sixth through ninth grades, Abdullah attended the Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and went to high school at nearby Deerfield Academy. After high school, he joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, followed by Pembroke College in Oxford. To round it all out, he earned a degree at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. When he wasn’t studying, he was at home getting trained in the Anti-Tank division of the Royal Jordanian Air Force. After graduating from Georgetown, he assumed command of Jordan’s special forces with the rank of Major General.

The Crown Prince, who already holds the rank of first lieutenant in the Jordanian Armed Forces, graduated from the US’ Georgetown University with a degree in international history last year. Now he’s following in his father’s footsteps at Sandhurst. 106

He is also a major investor in a $1.6 billion Star Trek theme park, which is a part of The Red Sea Astrarium.

Alongside her royal duties, Queen Rania also finds time to write children's books. Jordan's leading lady has released four books for children including The Sandwich Swap, which became a New York Times book list bestseller.

STAR TREK LOVER

K

ing Abdullah is a lifelong lover of Star Trek. In 1996, he went so far as to make a cameo appearance in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager. The gig was arranged by his U.S. advisor, and it was a surprise for Abdullah. At that time, he was still just a Prince, and for the filming, wore a teal, Starfleet Lieutenant uniform, intended to show his designation as a science officer within the fleet.

LOVE STORY

K

ing Abdullah is the first King of Jordan that has never had more than one wife. When he became King, Rania was the youngest queen in the world. Before being Queen she worked for Apple and Citibank. The couple married in a lavish ceremony in 1993, just six months after they had “love at first sight” when they met at a dinner party. The down-to-earth pair has been going strong for 24 years, and appear to be as in love as ever. As the Queen of Jordan and an advocate to women’s rights, Rania was named as one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes in 2009. In 1995, Queen Rania founded the Jordan River Foundation to help improve the lives of women and children in Jordan.

THE FASHION ICON Queen Rania is known as one of the most elegant women in the Arab world and beyond. Her Highness uses her position to advocate for children’s education, all while wearing the finest designs from the world’s most renowned fashion houses. Whether she’s donning Valentino Haute Couture or the house of Balmain, Queen Rania never fails to turn heads while adhering to her culture’s conservative tradition, preferring outfits with long sleeves and high necklines.

UFC originally planned an interim title bout between Nurmagomedov and welterweight winner Tony Ferguson, but it was canceled due to Khabib having medical issues related to his weight cut on weigh-in day. Ferguson eventually won the interim title at UFC216 against Kevin Lee. Ferguson was then expected to meet Nurmagomedov at UFC223, with the winner being crowned the undisputed champion. In turn, it was scrapped once again as Ferguson got injured, and after several possibilities for an opponent, Nurmagomedov eventually won the vacant title against Al Iaquinta. McGregor took some time off in 2017 due to the birth of his first son and returned from a nearly two-year UFC absence to challenge Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title.

At the T-Mobile Arena, the event drew an attendance of 20,034 fans, generating a live gate revenue of $17.2 million. It set the record for the highest ever mixed martial arts attendance and live gate in Nevada.

McGregor tapped when Khabib Nurmagomedov applied a tight neck crank in the fourth round. But Nurmagomedov spoiled the victory when, instead of celebrating, he jumped over the fence of the octagon and nearly incited a riot in the McGregor’s corner. The pair became involved into fights after their bout had finished and were handed temporary suspensions following those ugly scenes.

Nurmagomedov leapt from the octagon and fought a member of McGregor’s team, while the Irishman had a bust-up with some of the Russian’s entourage.

Once the NSAC completes its investigation, it will file complaints against Nurmagomedov, McGregor and potentially other individuals involved. There is no certain time frame for the process; however, it is going to be resolved before the end of the year. At the meantime, the Irishman has put a respectful post on social media, analyzing the fight in impressive detail. Nurmagomedov also apologized for his actions, but he said he had been aggravated by McGregor’s pre-fight trash talk, with the Irishman making remarks concerning the Russian fighter’s family, religion, and nationality.

“This is a respect sport, not a trash-talking sport” — commented the Dagestani. Nurmagomedov is the first Russian citizen to win a UFC title.

Exclusive BREAKING NEWS: supermodel Adriana Lima made her way down the catwalk at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show for the last time. The 37 years old Brazilian beauty received a standing ovation as she announced this year’s glamorous New York event would be her last. The blue-eyed, dark-haired beauty was born on June 12th, 1981, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. She has a combined heritage of Native Brazilian, Portuguese, Swiss, Japanese and West Indian ancestry. She is also multilingual as she speaks up to 4 languages. Lima was raised by her mother as her father left home when she was still a child. As a young child, Adriana did not like to be photographed. Actually she wanted to be a nun way before she considered modelling as a career. However, when she was 14, a friend asked her to enter together Ford’s “Supermodel of Brazil”, as she was too nervous to go alone. Lima ended up winning this competition and taking the second place at the “Supermodel of the World”. She has since graced the covers of the biggest fashion magazines in the world, walked on countless high-fashion runways and is near the top of Forbes’ list of highest earning models. Adriana is known to appear in some pretty historic commercials. In 2008, Li-

In addition to being the longest-serving model in Victoria’s Secret history, Lima was also named as the highest-earning model under the brand in 2016. In 2017 alone, Adriana Lima hauled in an astonishing $10.5 million which earned her the No. 4 spot on the highest-paid models chart behind Kendall Jenner, Gisele Bündchen, and Chrissy Teigen. The Brazilian-born model and fashion entrepreneur has an estimated net worth of $75 million. ma’s solo Victoria’s Secret ad became the most viewed ad of the Super Bowl game, with 103.7 million views. In 2012, Adriana Lima became the first celebrity to appear in two Super Bowl commercials during one game. One commercial was for Kia Motors and another was for the floral services company, Teleflora. The ads sure helped business as Kia saw sales for their Kia Optima, which was promoted during the commercial, increase by 138% from February 2012. It seems like anything with Adriana on it increases sales; the April 2006 issue of GQ magazine which featured Lima on the cover became the highest-selling issue of the year.

“Thank you for showing me the world, sharing your secrets, and, most importantly, not just giving me wings but teaching me to fly,” she wrote, alluding to her next chapter. ho is Mohamed Hadid? You may know him as t he glamourous ex-husband of Yolanda Foster, a Dutch model and star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and a jet set father of super models Gigi and Bella Hadid, but before they were famous, he was known in all the right circles as a renowned real estate developer of Palestinian origins based in Beverly Hills, California. Mohamed Anwar Hadid made his name building luxury hotels and mansions. He also has three other children, Anwar, Marielle and Alana — a fashion model, an L.A. — based stylist and clothing designer.

118

His life, however, wasn’t always so glamorous. Mohamed was born in 1948 in Nazareth in what was then known as Palestine. He left for Syria with his father, who worked for the United States Information Agency and Voice of America in Damascus. The family then moved to Tunisia and Greece before moving to Washington, where his father continued to work as a writer at VOA’s headquarters. Hadid attended both North Carolina State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He eventually moved to Los Angeles and created a real estate development company. Hadid built several hotels and mansions in Los Angeles and other U.S. cities. Apart from the United States, Hadid and his company were involved in several property projects in Qatar, Egypt and other countries. One of those luxury homes, the Palazzo di Amore, had a price tag of $195 million, making it one of the most expensive residential listings in the U.S.

119

2018

The multimillionaire always articulates the love and appreciation he holds for his five children, stressing that each one is “a star in their own world”.

Personality

Mohamed has also had many celebrity clients over the years, including Michael Jackson, who was living in an estate built by Mohamed his last years. A Palestinian-born real estate developer has concealed his deep affection to his original roots and his love for the Middle East despite spending most of his life in the United States. His style in architecture is greatly influenced by the rich Arab culture from which he originates. Of course someone that builds amazing homes for a living would have a spectacular home of his own. Mohamed currently lives in a 2.2-acre estate in Bel Air dubbed Le Belvedere. All of that outdoor space is filled with a majestic swimming pool, eight rose gardens, and three large fountains. The opulent interior of the mansion looks like something out of the Belvedere palace in Vienna, Austria, but it also has an international flair with a grand dining room, Turkish hammam, and baroque movie theater.

120

2018

Mohamed is a man of many talents. There are several surprising facts about this real estate mogul:

• Way back in 1992, he competed in the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Mohamed represented Jordan in speed skiing at the age of 43, and he was that country’s only representative. • Not only can Mohamed navigate the slopes, but he can also soar through the sky. Mohamed has been a pilot for years, having been known to take a Piper Navajo aircraft out for a spin. • Mohamed is an artist who creates pieces that are sometimes self-portraits, sometimes abstract expressionism. He even opened the Hadid Gallery in Beverly Hills in 2011 to showcase his art and that of other talented upand-coming artists from around the world. • The real estate developer has cool ancestors: he often proudly points out that his mother’s family is related to Zahir al-Umar, the prince of Nazareth and the sheikh of Galilee in the 18th century.
