Founded in 1971

Mission: to protect biodiversity in all its forms, to prevent pollution and abuse of the earth’s ocean, land, air and fresh water, to end all nuclear threats as well as promote peace, global disarmament and non-violence.

Having grown from a small group of activists protesting nuclear testing near Alaska in 1971 into an international organization, today Greenpeace is the largest nonviolent, direct action environmental organization in the world with 2.8 million members in over fifty countries. Greenpeace’s work focuses on climate change, oceans, forests, toxics, nuclear energy and sustainable agriculture. The global organization does not accept funding from governments, corporations, or political parties, relying on three million individual supporters and foundation grants. With its vast networks across the world it gives big efforts to make big corporations reduce their plastic footprint on the environments, especially its flow into the oceans. In addition, Green Peace is also engaged in addressing unsustainable industrial fishing practices, climate change and ocean acidification.

Once Greenpeace took action against fashion brands such as Burberry and Primark, trying to push them into a commitment against hazardous chemicals. It organized a three-day "social media storm", in Tweeter, Facebook and Instagram. This worked in tandem with highstreet action of volunteers in six countries campaigning outside Burberry stores. The desired effect was achieved, with Burberry committing to rid its manufacturing process of toxic chemicals by 2020. Primark made the same pledge two weeks later. Sports and fashion brand Adidas also made the 2020 pledge after Greenpeace published a report on toxic chemicals in Fifa World Cup merchandise, along with 18 leading brands such as H&M and Zara.
