HOT + COLD Can a company create an ‘insta-worthy’ bottle that combines fashion with function and encourage people to stop buying disposable bottles? It’s an audacious goal, but one that S’well believe they are well positioned to address. Beautifully crafted and composed of 18/8 stainless steel, New York design company S’well have taken the insulated bottle market and turned it upside down! Designed for performance, S’well thermo bottles will keep drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours - and they look great while they do it. S’well Bottle 500ml from $59.90, 750ml from $69.90

ON THE GO Did you know? It would take more than 450 years for a regular plastic bottle to fully degrade.

ORBITKEY WINS THE iF GOLD AWARD This year saw 6,402 entries submitted from 54 countries into the prestigious iF Design Award, Germany. Orbitkey was the only Australian company in the ‘Product’ Category. From this selection, only 75 entries won the Gold Award. If you have not heard of Orbitkey it is time to up your key-carrying game. Transform your cluster of keys into a neatly organised stack. Originally funded via Kickstarter, Orbitkey is proudly designed in Melbourne, Australia. Active rubber $33, leather from $45. Accessories: Bottle opener $7.50, multi tool $15, 8GB USB $20

Melbourne based co-founders Jesse Leeworthy and Jonathan Byrt saw first hand the devastating effect that single use plastic water bottles were having on our oceans and environment and decided to do something about it. Memobottle was born. Their aim? To change the public perception on reusable water bottles and encourage a more reusable society by providing a stylish, practical reusable bottle solution. Every element of the memobottle has been carefully considered, from its innovative shape to the premium grade packaging. Are you ready to join the #ONEBOTTLEMOVEMENT? More than 1.7 Billion people are affected by a weakening of the power of the human lens to adjust.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK More than 1.7 billion are affected by Presbyopia globally. 100% of the population will be affected now or in the future. Presbyopia can appear additionally to myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, and is an unavoidable natural phenomenon. Why do people need magnifiers? Presbyopia is a natural phenomenon linked to aging of the eyes which diminishes the vision from the ages of 40-45 onwards. More precisely, it relates to the natural weakening of the power of the lens to adjust (the transparent lens within the eye) during reading. Presbyopia causes diminished vision when reading smaller letters and when in insufficient lighting conditions. When someone begins to suffer from presbyopia, they are first forced to hold the reading material further away and look for better lighting. Then they will need to carry glasses with them for reading. In the absence of correction for visual acuity, headaches (migraines) will develop gradually, along with a burning sensation in the eye, generally at the end of the day.* * Source: Izipizi.com. These are not prescription glasses and are provided for the purpose of magnifying near or mid range distances. If you have any concerns with your eyes please consult an optometrist or eye care specialist. Izipizi readers from $50, sunglasses $60, folding $60

NO MORE PLASTIC BAGS In a business-as-usual scenario, the ocean is expected to contain 1 tonne of plastic for every 3 tonnes of fish by 2025, and by 2050, more plastics than fish (by weight).*

This year sees the end of plastic bag supply at supermarkets in Australia. We are a bit behind the world on this initiative, so it is no surprise that Europe is well ahead on stylish alternatives .

SERIOUSLY SEXY STORAGE Tina Clark had an extraordinary vision about storage. She believed it should be as aesthetically stylish as the exquisite fashion pieces it housed.

“There are times when you feel so passionately about something, you want to share it with the world.” After searching the world for years, unsuccessfully, Tina decided to create it herself. Now every uber-stylish home decorator from Europe to Australia wants Sagitine in their abodes. Tina was influenced by decades of living in the world’s most premium shopping hubs, so she didn’t need to look far for inspiration. Her wardrobe of cashmere, silk and heels needed a place to match their style. To Tina, there were simply no stylish storage options. Anywhere. Enter Tina’s creation. Enter Sagitine. Storage so beautiful, so premium, so practical you will want to thank Tina yourself for her inspired idea.

FOR THE KIDS AT HEART

3.

Time to reduce screentime and rediscover the simple pleasures of a game of chess. The inspiration of a young girl playing chess with her dad. Wanting to win, she moved her rook onto a pawn’s square and announced she could now move both pieces together, moving them to the far end of the board she quickly promoted to a queen and beat her dad. THE ULTIMATE INFUSION

3.

A must for every “foodie”. Originally created as a custom piece for bar chefs at The Aviary in Chicago, IL the Porthole is a simple, beautiful infusion vessel designed by Martin Kastner of Crucial Detail design studio. It can be used to create striking cocktails, oils, teas, dressings, lemonade, coffee, or any other type of cold infusion. Initially made by hand for the restaurant, demand saw the designers seek ways to put it into production. A highly successful Kickstarter campaign reached its manufacturing pledge goal in a matter of hours... and the Porthole Infuser was born! Create infusions for tea, soups or cocktails. From simple additions of fruit and sugar syrup to complex creations the infuser is a talking point at the dinner table and an artistic delight. The Porthole Infuser $158

DESIGNATED DRIVER If you are the nominated one, don’t let that cramp your style! Water need not be relegated to second-class drinking vessels. Enjoy your H2O with true finesse. A series of carafes that are as stylish displaying water as they are with cocktails or mocktails. 1. Rosendahl Water Carafe $50 2. Fia Carafe with Amber Crystal stopper $129.90 3. SPICED SYRUP RECIPE FOR YOUR PORTHOLE INFUSER HEAVY SYRUP

Directions

2 parts sugar by weight 1 part water by weight

Bring water to a boil. Dissolve sugar into the boiling water, stirring constantly. Once sugar is dissolved completely, remove pan from heat immediately. (Note: Boiling syrup for an extended period of time will thicken it.)

LIGHT SYRUP 1 part sugar by weight 1 part water by weight

Allow syrup to cool. Load the Porthole with desired ingredients and check for a good seal before adding syrup. Infuse for at least 24 hours in a refrigerator. Infusion times will vary with ingredients.

SUGGESTED FRUIT

Tips

Blueberry, cucumber, lemon, orange or strawberry.

-O nly use a filter screen if infusion ingredients can pass though the spout, otherwise leave out for faster filling and pouring. - Leave an inch of space at the top when filling the Porthole with syrup. Do not immediately insert the stopper in the spout so ingredients can settle and expand. - To make a light, simple syrup that does not require a stove, combine equal parts (1:1) sugar and water in a bottle and shake until the sugar is completely dissolved. - To extend the life of your syrup, add a tablespoon of vodka.

THE PERFECT WHISKY Gone are the days of whisky being reserved for stuffy old men’s clubs filled with cigar smoke and roaring fires. Scotch has had a serious renaissance in recent years and you may have noticed more and more hip and trendy people ordering it in bars. The real question is, how should you serve it without suffering at the hands of a social faux pas. After the bottle choice itself, if you’re going to serve the perfect whisky, the vessel is the most important contributing factor to your enjoyment and appreciation.

The Danish Fuel Bar Cabinet makes a statement home bar whilst retrieving waste from landfill. Each Danish Fuel jerry can bar cabinet is a unique work of art $1,095 each.

Specifically designed Whisky glasses provide the idea air to liquid ratio. Only one question remains... Neat or on the rocks?

LUXE FROM WASTE No two Danish Fuel jerry cans are alike, so these truly are rare and unique pieces of art that are making use of waste. The jerry can was designed by the Germans in 1939 during World War II. These bar cabinets (and bathroom cabinets) are upcycled from discarded fuel cans, which otherwise end up in landfill. Old rust and paint have been removed by sandblasting and then new powder coating added. Real timber internal shelving and panel detailing create the finishing touch. Each cabinet takes 3-4 weeks to make, with every single one resulting in a unique statement piece. All Danish Fuel designs are made using jerry cans that are collected from military surplus stock-houses in Europe. Proudly made in Denmark. $1,095

Starlight Hills Ltd Edition Print, by Antoinette Ferwerda $1,530

AWARD WINNING LANO Kirsten Carriol had to catch a plane and was stuck for lip balm. That long flight became her light bulb moment. Growing up on a remote Australian sheep farm her dad (a DNA scientist) had taught her that lanolin, from wool, mimics human oils - making it nature’s secret to all skin moisture. As a child, lanolin was the only ingredient her parents used on her lips and skin. Chapped but undefeated, Kirsten then created Lano: the most natural - and magically simple - lanolin lip with over 50 Awards to prove it. What is Lanolin and why is it so great? Lanolin is a 100% natural substance found on the wool of sheep that helps keep their coat protected and dry throughout the year. Sheep’s wool grows continuously; if it’s not sheared annually the fleece will become soiled and too heavy for the animal. Lanolin is the animal-cruelty-free by-product of wool washing after shearing. Lano’s Lanolin goes through an exclusive refining process for ultra pure grade lanolin. 1. 101 Ointment The Original Multipurpose Superbalm 15g $18.90 2. Tinted Balm SPF30 Nude 12.5g $14.90 3. For your home to feel like a sanctuary, it can’t just be about how it looks - it’s about how it feels. That’s why they’ve taken a holistic approach to the home, encompassing everything from furniture to fragrance. Just in case that wasn’t enough, they’ve also designed a line of luxurious body scrubs and bath brews made from natural and organic ingredients. Founded in 2010 by Ryan Hanrahan, Addition Studio is all about the art of the daily ritual, with many of the pieces coming from his own personal obsessions with daily rituals and at the core of his inspiration; wellness, health and natural therapies. Smell is the only sense linked directly to the emotional cortex of the brain, which is why scents tend to evoke such strong memories and emotions. It is this idea that permeates much of Ryan’s work. For example their Essential Oils are all labelled with symbols only - the Upper Oil, which has a graphic of an upward pointing arrow on the bottle, is designed to lift and reinvigorate you.

3.

Addition Studio creates the treatments and organic therapies, as well as the apparatus, for you to create a luxurious retreat in your very own home.

PHONE SOAP You wash and bathe yourself. Keep yourself healthy and clean. But what about your phone? Your phone has become a third hand you never wash. Your phone is 18x dirtier and contains more harmful bacteria than a public toilet. We wash our hands, but we never wash our phones, and we forget whatever our hands touch we pass on to our phones. We store our phones in warm places and help the bacteria grow and then transfer that bacteria to anything we touch, like food, our skin or anyone we come in contact with. A Shark Tank USA sensation, PhoneSoap solves the seemingly “growing” problem

2.

of illness causing bacteria on our devices. PhoneSoap is the perfect solution to keep your phone bacteria free while you charge your phone. PhoneSoap is designed to fit into your decor - next to your bed, at your office or even in your kitchen. It only takes a few minutes for your phone to be germ free and clean of dangerous bacteria that can make you sick or that you could pass on to others. The UV-C lights inside PhoneSoap kill germs without harmful heat, making it safe and effective. PhoneSoap can sanitise more than just electronic devices too: keys, credit cards – anything that fits inside the case. 1. THE SCENT OF SCANDINAVIA Scandinavian lifestyle is right here - in the colour, scent, light and warmth of a flickering candle flame. Skandinavisk was born from 2 English chaps, Shaun and Gerry, who fell in love with 2 blonde Scandinavian girls 15 years ago and never left. After each moving to the region, working for 2 big American multinationals and living between Copenhagen and Stockholm, Shaun and Gerry both fell gradually in love with the Scandinavian way of life - the focus on life’s small moments, the priority of family over career, the cycle to the office, the home at 4pm, the raw nature, the endless summers. It’s an enviable lifestyle that even the bitterest winter can’t dilute. Shaun and Gerry believe the absolute essence of Scandinavian lifestyle is right here - in the colour, scent, light and warmth of a flickering candle flame and a glow that not only burrows deep through the wax, but one which nourishes the soul too. After all, Scandinavians use more candles than any other nation in the world. They use them morning, noon and night. 12 months a year. Because they know that a candle makes any moment softer, more informal, more cosy. And they are the world’s happiest people. That is something worth sharing. Candles: 55g $29, 190gr $59, Reed Diffuser set $79, Hand Lotion 300ml $39, Hand Wash 300ml $35, Hand Cream 75ml $35

IN THE RIGHT LIGHT Creating the right ambience in the room can be challenging. Here are some tips to get you on the right track. Too many lights on can make your room feel bland and uninviting and yet, too little light can make the room seem suffocating and gloomy. The right light fixture, like a well-considered colour scheme, can make all the difference when it comes to first impressions. Ambient lighting is a carefully constructed tapestry of light colours and layers and represents a shift from the everyday “practical” lighting, to a much warmer, more comfortable and peaceful lighting. Thankfully, this can now take place with the simple flick of a switch. If you are looking to create a cozy effect you’ll want to gravitate towards using warm whites, for an open fresh feel use natural whites or for a crisp clean effect use cool whites. Common bulbs you might find in lamps and pendant lights around the home. E27 (or Edison Bulb) is a standard screw fitting, E14 looks similar to E27 but is a smaller diameter. Bayonet has the 2 little pins either side (twist and push to insert) and a G8 Halogen is a little ceramic piece with 2 little pins out the bottom.

WATTS THE DIFFERENCE? For as long as we can remember we’ve been buying light bulbs according to their wattage, but like Bob Dylan said, “the times they are a changin’” Many manufacturers now label their products according to lumens, so despite our years of conditioning, lumens (which measure light output) are actually a more accurate measurement of how bright a light will be. Not only can the wrong wattage damage your light fitting it has an enormous visual impact on the effect of your gorgeous light fitting.

STATEMENT LAMP Light is part of everyone’s life. It dictates our days and nights. It illuminates our environment. It sets the mood around us. The effect of good lighting cannot be overestimated. The most beautiful interiors will not shine without appropriate lighting. The Aplin lamps, by Chris Aplin, are designed to complement any interior by adding a functional statement piece. Winner of a 2016 Good Design Award, Aplin Lamp is available in black, white, $349 and light brass $549

Tools to keep the perfect fire going. To keep the conversation flowing. To keep the ideas growing.

The story of a little girl and a burning desire to combine her love of design and the open fire. There was once a little girl who was surrounded by light. The long days of the short Scandinavian summers formed her happiest memories. She played and basked in the sun until its last ray flitted over the horizon. Even the darkest winters shimmered with warmth. Candles in the windows were unfazed by the harsh winds beating against the panes. And at the end of each day, a crackling fire welcomed her as she sipped cups of hot chocolate, shared stories with family and friends, and dreamed about all the midsummer nights to come. “Light is everything”, she says. The little girl’s name is Louise, and this is her story. The fireplace was the heart of her home. Louise’s family was well aware of this. They turned fireplaces into a family business, providing the best designs throughout Scandinavia. You see, it wasn’t just the warmth of the fire that made it possible to live so comfortably in the harsh northern environment. The fine design of Scandinavian furnishings made living elegant and easy. Her grandparents

made sure that the home had only the most simple and beautifully designed things - so that life in the home would be just that: simple and beautiful. Louise grew up understanding how design could make a difference. She didn’t realise it then, but these two things - fire and design - would ignite an interest that would grow into its own niche within the family business: fireplace accessories. By developing the tools to keep the perfect fire going. To keep the conversation flowing. To keep the ideas growing. To keep that light, like at the end of a midsummer night, shining. So that people can gather together at the end of the day and share their stories. And so it was this - the love for fire and design that was the beginning of Eldvarm.

A MOMENT WITH MISSONI The woman behind one of Italy’s most iconic fashion brands started Missoni Home after she retired! Rosita Missoni and her late husband Ottavio co-founded Missoni. Their business started as a small 100 square metre factory, which would grow into the internationally acclaimed fashion powerhouse we know today. Rosita handed the reigns to her daughter Angela and relaunched Missoni Home in 2004. With a contagious energy and an irresistible twinkle in her eye, Rosita Missoni is everything I want to be “when I grow up”. On one of Rosita’s visits to Australia I was lucky enough to sit down with her for a light lunch - right in the middle of our Sydney store! One of my truly unforgettable moments.

Every season Missoni release an enormous amount of diverse patterns for the Missoni Home collection. I love to imagine all these amazing ideas filling a room and Rosita wandering through the patterns like she would wander through her garden, deciding which ones to ‘pick’ for this season… This season sees a riot of patterns and colour in some designs, tempered by refined and elegant colour combinations in others. One of their best seasons yet. Fun Missoni Fact Each year the collection starts with a different letter of the alphabet, this year we are up to ‘V.’ Some are seasonal and may not run again and others are added to the ongoing stable. This way you can always tell how long a particular design has been in the collection. Pictured: Terri Winter and Rosita Missoni

An open flame warms the body and the soul. A Cocoon Fire creates a vibrant and lively flame that will dance and flicker throughout your evening, warming your home and inspiring conversation as you meet with friends and family. It is the simplicity of the design that makes the object so attractive and effective. As the bioethanol burns the main body of the fireplace heats and radiates warmth throughout the room. Cocoon fireplaces run on bioethanol, making the fires clean and environmentally friendly. What type of combustion is used? Cocoon Fires run on bioethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol or grain alcohol. It is a biofuel which can be derived from plants including corn, wheat, barley and sugarcane. How long does this type of fire burn for? The duration of the flame depends on the quantity, climate conditions, altitude, air current and the height of the flame. The burner contained inside can hold enough fuel to burn for up to 4-6 hours depending on the heat setting, which can be adjusted for comfort. How much heat is produced? The amount of heat emitted depends on several factors: how high you have the flames set, your home itself. If you have a lot of glass or you have concrete floors you will get heat loss, and it depends on the insulation of your home. The Cocoon Fires produce approx 3.6kw, which is equivalent to a small to medium gas or electric heater. Does it smell? The bioethanol (methylated spirits) smells slightly as you pour it into the tray, but does not emit an odour at all whilst the Cocoon Fire is burning.

A CELEBRATED CLASSIC Timeless, elegant design, the Aalto shape reflects the lakes in Finland, holding water in your home the way the lakes are cocooned within the mountains.

It is hard to imagine today the waves Alvar Aalto’s Savoy vase caused in 1936. Alvar Aalto entered a competition to find pieces for the Finnish pavilion at the 1937 Paris World’s Fair. He entered the Aalto vase under the pseudonym “Eskimo woman’s leather breeches” [not really sure where THAT came from...!] Its mysterious form stood in total opposition to the accepted machine centred thinking of the time. Rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition and characterised by enduring aesthetics, the brand seeks to expand on these traditions with new materials, techniques and bold thinking. One of Muuto’s newest releases embodies this classic yet forward thinking design philosophy. Robert Foster and F!NK are synonymous with the best that Australian design has to offer. Robert was a luminary in his field of contemporary design and silversmithing and a “once-in-ageneration maker.

LOOKING FORWARD

1.

F!NK + Co. was established by Robert Foster in 1993 in Queanbeyan, NSW, with the aim of creating a design and manufacturing business that would support and generate opportunities for Australian designer-makers. Joined by Gretel Harrison in 1995, together they built F!NK + Co. into the business it is today - a much loved and respected Australian design company with an international reputation for producing worldclass product, with the most world renowned pieces being the iconic Water Jug. F!NK is the promise of modern design excellence, uniting the utmost respect for the design ethic with that refined craftsmanship. This craftsmanship combines traditional artisanal practices alongside innovative contemporary manufacturing techniques joined with the wit and rigour of designer-founder Foster. Tragically, Robert Foster was killed in a car accident in July 2016. Today, F!NK + Co. is spearheaded by his wife, Gretel Harrison. The company has continued to go from strength to strength as Gretel and her dedicated team builds on the legacy of Robert Foster. Obviously Robert’s death was devastating both personally and professionally, but that philosophy surges ahead under the watchful gaze of Gretal, who, for the past 18 months, has been heavily investing in new equipment and setting up new systems to improve the efficiencies and safety aspects of the business. They are focusing on improving tooling and streamlining production processes. She has employed more staff as Robert could do the work for 3 people! Gretel and her team are ensuring FINK can continue long into the future.

INTERIOR INSPIRATION Adding curves to compliment or contrast clean straight lines is a trick to add some elegance and visual space in any room. Stylists use this little trick all the time. It can take away the boxy look often created by the sofa, shelving and rugs in a square room that we are often faced with. Soften the look, yet keep it modern with sculptural details like a feature vase - beautiful with or without the flowers.

Made By Pen’s collaboration with Adelaide- based designer Jim HannonTan has given rise to something like a miniature streetscape when the number of different interchangeable components are brought together. Linea is uniquely versatile, giving uniformity to mess. It can accommodate anything from pencils and paperclips, to soaps and sponges, making it well suited to living areas, the study, kitchen or bathroom.

THE DUTCH TOUCH Puik represents contemporary Dutch design and their collection contains the best products by designers who are just as demanding as we are. The founders, Freek Claessen and Daan Gescher, always had a passion for art and design. And in 2012, inspired by the quality and the enthusiasm of Dutch designers, they decided to chase their dreams and start the company. Their devotion to form, shape and a commitment to creating something truly unique resulted in a diverse portfolio of design icons, which quickly found their way, (much to our joy) into Top3 stores.

5.

Their unique design items come into their own, by using natural light and reflection, soft colour tones and transparent materials. The Puik products are a simple way to liven up your home, or spice up any workspace. If you’re looking for your introduction into Dutch contemporary design, look no further than Puik. 1. TIME FOR TEA Tea has been an important beverage around the world for thousands of years. It has been a huge part of culture in countries around the globe. But tea isn’t just appreciated for its good taste, it also offers numerous health benefits. Being lower in caffeine than coffee you can be more alert, yet remain calm, tea hosts a wealth of antioxidants which are said to increase your lifespan and promote overall well-being, and reduce your risk of heart attack as well as being calorie free. Pour yourself a cup and enjoy the benefits.

NOT ALL TEAPOTS ARE CREATED EQUAL Tea, often thought of as being a quintessentially British drink, is easily the most consumed beverage in the entire world. People from all over the globe have enjoyed tea for thousands of years‌ and rightfully so. It is a versatile beverage, comes in countless styles and flavours and can possess numerous health benefits. People have many theories and techniques when it comes to creating the perfect brew, but for Tea-purists, the pot is one of the most important aspects of the brewing process. When considering which to purchase, think if you want the pot to provide tea for formidable consumers like the family and/or guests, or if you simply need one that brews enough for just yourself.

Stelton stands for high-quality. We could leave it there, but like all emerging brands and designers, they too started somewhere.. After merging their two first names together, friends Stellan and Carton formed one of Denmark’s best-known design brands. Stelton Niels Stellan Høm and Carton Madelaire were army pals who joined forces more than 50 years ago to start a trading company. After trying their hand at sports shoes and furniture, they found that their business did not really take off until they heard about a small factory in Fårevejle, Denmark, called ‘Danish Stainless.’ Danish Stainless produced stainless steel tableware, which was very much in vogue in Denmark’s 1960s. Upon entering into an agreement with Danish Stainless, Stelton began marketing a stainless gravy boat that sold like hotcakes in Danish hardware stores and was also a massive hit on foreign shores. In the United States, Stelton products were the epitome of Danish Design and sold for high prices in top department stores and design boutiques.

When Peter Holmblad arrived at the company as the new managing director, he brought his far-reaching vision with him. New catalogues, packaging and graphic design all helped create a new brand and purpose. However, he was convinced that Stelton could only survive in a competitive landscape through new product design.

5.

What did that look like? Peter approached his step-father Arne Jacobsen (perhaps Denmark’s greatest architect and designer ever) with a simple drawing of a teapot on a napkin during a family dinner. That was the starting point for Arne Jacobsen’s tableware design and after three years of intensive development, ‘Cylinda-line’ was launched in 1967. At that time, the cylindrical characteristic profile was avant-garde. Today the series is recognised as a symbol of classic, timeless style.

A HISTORY OF DESIGN GREATNESS

6.

Possibly the next significant triumph was the now classic EM77 Vacuum Jug by Eric Magnussen. Today the values of the company continue to pay tribute to Scandinavian design heritage, innovation, quality and the provocation of traditional design with releases like the Collar Series by Daniel Debiasi and Federico Sandri. Whilst being very contemporary Collar also has a significant nod to the craftsmanship of the past.

7.

8.

All of which means that Stelton is always at the forefront of innovation whilst always being grounded by its quest for high quality.

If it’s been done before I don’t want to do it. Founder and Creative Director Sandy Chilewich.

ALL IN THE WEAVE With the introduction of her pioneering placemats in 2000, New York designer Sandy Chilewich changed how the world sets the table. Today her namesake company is a trusted resource for unique textiles ranging from rugs to wallcoverings that are as beautiful as they are functional. “Originality is our primary mission,” says Chilewich, a veteran entrepreneur who previously co-founded the hosiery company HUE. It’s this mindset that led her to imagine new possibilities for the extruded vinyl yarn she discovered while sourcing materials nearly twenty years ago. Developed for outdoor furniture, the material stood out for its strength, vivid colour, and adaptability. Chilewich immediately recognised its untapped

creative potential. “The durability of this extruded yarn, the intrinsic sheen of the material, its tremendous design versatility, and the fact that it is washable inspired me then and continues to inspire me today,” she says. Chilewich textiles combine innovative materials with an uncompromising process. Each season, the company’s designers and in-house weavers develop novel textiles and fresh palettes, creating hand-woven samples at the New York studio before sending them on to a familyowned mill in Alabama to create woven prototypes for the design team to review. Once perfected and woven, the textiles are shipped to their facility in Georgia to be cut to size, finished by hand, and transformed into enduring products for tables, floors, walls, and windows. In addition to homes, offices, hotels, and restaurants around the world, Chilewich designs can be found in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, in New York City. Meanwhile, at the company’s bright new Manhattan headquarters (which doubles as a gleaming showcase for iconic products and prototypes alike), the innovation continues.

3.

Says Chilewich, “I am continually seeking new materials that combine beauty and functionality,” says Chilewich, “and searching for underutilised manufacturing processes that with design input can be modernised.” Stay clear of cheap imitations. Chilewich are made in America. 1. Kaleidoscope pink champagne (also available in black, brass and gun metal) $18.90 2. Glow tablemats in indigo $39.90 (also available in guava and orchid).

HEART OF THE HOME The statement that the kitchen is the heart of the home has never been more relevant than it is today. The kitchen in modern homes is not isolated from the rest of the household - it is the hub where we gather with family and friends. Where we prepare the meal, pour a glass of wine or oversee the homework session while unpacking the groceries. Take clues from your favourite bars or cafes to create an area that is raised with bar seating to ensure a truly social gathering. Then when friends and family arrive for dinner we can still be preparing the meal and enjoy a conversation and share a glass of wine without interruption to our preparations or have the awkward kitchen hovering of our guests. Add storage for the things that need to be nearby, like your favourite cookbooks, homework essentials or meaningful family objects to create a kitchen that looks great and functions superbly as the hub of the home. From homework to cocktails the home bar area will be your new favourite place to be. 1. Ambit pendant lights from $295 2. ALESSI’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH AUSTRALIAN DESIGNERS Incredibly, second only to the number of Italian designers represented in the Alessi stable are... Australian designers.

1.

Designer | Zaha Hadid

In fact, 14 have been represented within the collection over the lifetime of the company. Not bad for such a discerning brand. And, they continue to surge forward in their hunt for the very best Australian talent with the annual ‘Alessi Design Awards.’ Winners of the award not only get to work alongside an elite list of other Australian designers who have worked with the Italian giant, but are also invited to visit the Crusinallo plant in Omegna to see the facilities and their own product being made.

Zaha Hadid, founder of Zaha Hadid Architects, was the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize (considered to be the Nobel Prize of architecture) in 2004 and is internationally known for both her theoretical and academic work. Each of her dynamic and innovative projects builds on over thirty years of revolutionary exploration and researching the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design. Hadid’s interest lay in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape and geology as her practice integrated natural topography and human-made systems, leading to experimentation with cutting-edge technologies. Such a process often results in unexpected and dynamic architectural forms.

According to founder Alberto Alessi, “A true design work must move people, convey emotions, bring back memories, surprise, and go against common thinking.” Furthermore, Alessi has been described as a “Dream Factory,” which uses its products to make people’s dreams come true, providing them with the cultural richness they seek. Having been founded in a workshop in 1921, working with brass and nickel silver sheet metal, the company has consistently stood out for its expertise and excellence in design. Naturally, the company has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of the Italian surroundings, but has also expanded its use of materials, working with metals, porcelain, glass, wood and plastic, and continues to be synonymous with creating products with a beautiful aesthetic and design, but also providing functional quality. 1. GOT A BLUNT YET? FIGHT AGAINST THE UGLINESS 24 Bottles are a fresh team of designers, thinkers and doers based in Italy. Quoting Massimo Vignelli, they think that the life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against the ugliness. The repercussions of ugliness are endless. As citizens they feel bad every time they see waste and decay, like people throwing disposables away all around the planet. As designers they seek and provide solutions. With its name derived from the fact that the water will stay cool for 24 hours (and hot for 12), they came out with the idea of something sustainable, smart and stylish for those who care like they do. 24 Bottles last. They perform. They’re beautiful. The world is happy. The Urban Bottle 500ml $34.90, 1000ml $43.90, Clima (thermal) 500ml $59.90 Clima 850ml black or steel $69.90

A revolution in Umbrella Design. The team at Blunt abhor the idea that umbrellas are at the forefront of the throwaway culture. (And we whole-heartedly agree!) Blunt’s quest is to change the acceptance of built-in obsolescence and shoddy workmanship one BLUNT™ umbrella at a time. Putting it bluntly, their umbrellas are the single most significant advancement in umbrella design, in over a century... or even longer. Who really knows how long, but they are without doubt, the world’s best umbrellas - designed in New Zealand. The Blunt’s innovative design means the canopy will not tear at the tips or easily turn inside out. Collapsible XS Ø95cm $89, classic Ø120cm $109, XL Ø137cm $129

MAKING AN ENTRANCE The area just inside your front door is the first glimpse guests have of your home when they arrive. Quite often this area also becomes the dumping ground for busy family life. One of the big mistakes we see people make is force new behaviour to “clean it up. Realistically the best solution is to modify the area to cater to your family needs. If shoes and bags need to stay there for quick and easy exit for the school run - then add hooks and storage boxes to keep them tidy. If you have kids, a designated space for each child gives them ownership, and helps keep it tidier. Adding a hall console is a great place to store keys or the mail as well as being an area that can be decorated with little vignettes of artwork, vases, treasured decorative objects gathered through your life journey. A lit candle in the entry is always a welcoming idea. Tidying up the entry area is not just for guests, feel the difference when you walk through the door after a busy day.

First impressions count. What is your home saying to guests when they arrive?
