GREENHOUSES

You can’t buy happiness BUT YOU CAN BUY PLANTS.

And that’s pretty much the same thing.

Family-owned and operated since 1972, Starview Greenhouses, Nursery, Garden Center, and Gift Shop in La Grange, Kentucky, has grown from a small single greenhouse to a sprawling selection covering over 3.5 acres. Manager Theresa Rahm’s grandparents were the original owners, followed by her three uncles, including her Uncle Ed Ott. Theresa, Uncle Ed, and two other cousins continue in the family business. “It’s a good atmosphere where all employees are treated like family.”

Customers appreciate the “bench system” in the main greenhouse behind the Garden Center. After making your fi rst selection, a staff member places it on a bench in the loading area and assigns a number. From then on, they will carry all of your remaining items to the bench for you. When you’re fi nished shopping, the staff writes up a ticket. Simply pay in the Garden Center, pull your car around, give a staff member your bench number and receipt, and let them load up for you!

Starview’s quality and quantity of selection also set them apart. “90% of our plants are from seeds or cuttings. Trees and shrubs are from a Tennessee tree farm, and all are zonal to withstand Kentucky winters,” says Theresa. Starview has 2.5 acres under cover and a 1-acre tree lot. It is a one-stop-shop for seasonal plants, over 16000 perennials, mulches, potting soils, and topsoils. The annuals come in a large variety of colors to accommodate all home exterior colors and are conveniently organized by whether they are sun-loving or shade-loving. Be sure to check out the “huge” geraniums and hanging ferns!

Starview carries an abundance of fruit and vegetable trees and plants, including 35 varieties of cherry, heirloom, and hothouse tomatoes. The full lot of trees and shrubs offers excellent stock, as does the newest greenhouse with an expanded selection of houseplants and succulents. Starview Gift Shop’s unique yard decorations, candles, containers, and windchimes enhance outdoor living spaces. “We try to lean toward Made in the USA whenever possible.” The Garden Center carries garden chemicals, tools, and fertilizers. But “If we don’t have it, we will try to order it.” 
