ave Caudill, a Louisville sculptor, has created artworks across America and abroad. Most of his pieces are stainless steel abstract expressions. For the new Lyric Norton Commons, Dave has sculpted a stylized presentation of a treble clef staff with musical notes that he has fashioned from thick stainless plate. It will be installed later this summer. “It’s exciting to work with a client willing to embrace an unusual design,” Dave said. You’ve seen his other work at 6th and Main, UofL's School of Music, Crescent Hill Library and Yew Dell Gardens. The Lyric sculpture is made of stainless steel and stands 15 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter. “It presents a part of the musical notation for the song “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie in the form of an upward spiral,” Dave said. He titled the sculpture “Community,” to reflect Guthrie’s intent with that song and to remind everyone who sees it “of the importance of community at a time when so much emphasis has been placed on individuality.” Lyric Norton Commons is a new five-acre luxury community with apartments, retail space and public art installations. Nashville-based Bristol Development Group commissioned two outdoor sculptures for the Lyric community, and showcased them both in mid-May by sponsoring the 2021 Norton Commons Arts Festival in its new location this year, the North Village Town Square across the street from Lyric. “Commons Love Tree” by Garry Bibbs was installed the

day before the festival, while festival goers got a photo preview of Dave Caudill’s sculpture as they enjoyed local musicians, independent food and drink vendors, and the local artisan community. The Lyric community will install Dave’s “Community” sculpture this summer at the corner of Meeting Street and River Beauty Loop (the front door of Lyric Norton Commons, if you will) and just across from the North Village Town Square. “I believe in the power of beautiful art to inspire and challenge people,” Dave said. “So many people will see a piece of art in public who might not visit a gallery or museum and by stimulating curiosity and imagination, public art can fuel creativity across all of society.” See more of Dave Caudill’s work at www.caudillart.com and learn more about Lyric Norton Commons at www.lyricnortoncommons.com.  TOPS LOUISVILLE | June 2021 15

Greater Louisville Inc. The Metro Chamber of Commerce G

reater Louisville Inc., the Metro Chamber of Commerce, is perhaps the foremost authority on what makes Louisville great. “Our mission is to accelerate economic growth, and one of the ways we do that is by attracting and retaining talent. Our goal is to make Louisville a great place to live, work and play. We want people to love living in Louisville by experiencing all the great things our region has to offer,” says GLI President & CEO Sarah Davasher–Wisdom. “Our Live in Lou initiative is just one example.”

extra time off to bonuses and even free admission to community events.” She also shares how the challenges from the pandemic disproportionately impacted small local and minority–owned businesses. “Unlike some larger corporations,” Sarah says,

Our mission is to accelerate economic growth, and one of the ways we do that is by attracting and retaining talent. Our goal is to make Louisville a great place to live, work and play. We want people to love living in Louisville by experiencing all the great things our region has to offer...

GLI showcases “community events, neighborhoods, and leaders that make our community special” through the website (liveinlou.com) and social media platforms. “We also developed our City Champs program (liveinlou.com/ city–champs) to complement this work. We train ambassadors, or ‘City Champs,’ who talk to individuals considering a move to Louisville and help sell the city from a resident’s perspective. These ambassadors are people that love Greater Louisville and come from a variety of backgrounds.” Sarah shares her personal and professional opinion on what the city offers and how to leverage our strengths for further growth and improvement. “Louisville is a unique place. We have a great blend of rich history and a culture that embraces change and innovation. I enjoy our arts community, and I feel it sets us apart from other cities and regions of our size. There is always something new to see and do in the city, no matter what neighborhood you live or work in.”

As people get out more this spring and summer, local businesses are gearing up to meet demand. “Many businesses are working to encourage their employees and patrons to get vaccinated. They know that is the only way to return to full capacity and for restrictions to be lifted. Many are offering incentives to motivate people in the community to get vaccinated and hopefully expedite the process. We have seen everything from

“Many local and minority–owned businesses are the product of personal investment and life savings with a minimal safety net to support them through this once–in–a– lifetime pandemic.” For their part, “GLI is focused on getting traffic and people back to our urban areas like Downtown, Nulu, Russell, and Smoketown, which the pandemic has disproportionately impacted. Our Lou Needs You Campaign (greaterlouisville.com/ louneedsyou) is a partnership with Louisville Tourism, Louisville Forward, and the Louisville Downtown Partnership to help highlight local businesses in these neighborhoods to increase foot traffic helping these businesses rebound. The organization is also concerned with the current lack of inventory. “I expect inventory to open up later in the year with more housing starts and increasing comfortability with showings.”

GLAR also supported legislation that allows the Louisville Metro Land Bank more flexibility in transferring properties in the land back to get them into the housing market, creating more housing opportunities. Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc. A

ccording to John Shaw–Woo, Founder and CEO of Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc., innovation and the entrepreneurial community make Louisville exciting. “It’s all about transforming conceptual ideas into well– thought–out business plans, coupled with supportive business and financial connections. Louisville is a synergistic city for budding entrepreneurs focused on creating Traditional and Lifestyle Business Concepts in today’s leisurely and rapidly changing technological times. If you have an unwavering drive to be an entrepreneur, Louisville is the perfect city for you to start, grow, and sustain a business.”

Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc., launched in Louisville in 2019, is a member of U.S. Black Chambers Inc. and a certified Community Development Entity (CDE) under the U.S. Treasury Department. The chamber has grown into a national 501(c)3 organization focused on innovative online programming leading to economic and social mobility for all Black Americans.” The chamber’s mission is centered on eight pillars – four around Business and four around Community:

Business START – support for entrepreneurs GROW – small business growth SUSTAIN – continued success for “medium” business 4. RISE – promotion of corporate professionals

If you have an unwavering drive to be an entrepreneur, Louisville is the perfect city for you to start, grow, and sustain a business. – John Shaw-Woo, Founder and CEO, Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc.

Community 5.

Black Community Trauma – education to identify, work through, and move past black community trauma 6. Black Teen Higher Professional Careers Attainment – a national online educational program with nine professional career cohorts 7. Apprenticeship and Job Training for Black Non–College–Bound Teens 8. Welfare Reform – bringing lawmakers and entitlement recipients together to find solutions to wean recipients off the system that perpetuates generational poverty

In addition, the chamber’s Homebuyer Education Program moves Section 8 Families and low–to–moderate families into homeownership. The National HBCU (Historically Black College Institutes) & PBI (Predominantly Black Institutions) Black Talent Recruitment Job Placement Program connects corporations with top black talent. “Louisville has a fundamental tension issue that has gone unaddressed for over a decade. College graduates and black talent are leaving the city,” says John. “I have concluded it is a city government issue that must be addressed immediately. The question is what is missing from the city that drives talent away and how city government can find immediate solutions. Each day, the city is falling behind midsize metropolitan cities. Louisville

is a great city, but it can be better with a long– term strategic plan focused on supporting, attracting, and retaining talent.” According to John, “Black Americans are at a point where they realize they need to support black businesses. The online platform Buy Black Lou provides opportunities. Still, small black businesses also need support from the entire community to grow.” John suggests seeking “more variety in the types of businesses you support.” Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc. seeks diversity in support of the chamber by offering a Friends of Chamber Membership for non–black businesses. Olmsted Parks Conservancy F

rederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape design, was invited to Louisville in 1891 and commissioned to design a park system for Louisville. He was already famous for New York City’s Central Park, the US Capitol Grounds, and the Biltmore Estate Grounds in Asheville, North Carolina. “Olmsted’s designs for Cherokee, Iroquois, and Shawnee Parks took advantage of the topographical elements unique to each sector of the city.” They also provided a system of interconnecting parkways to link them and the neighborhoods that grew up around them.

Olmsted Parks Conservancy was formed in 1989 to provide a high level of care, restoration, and maintenance for the 17 Olmsted parks and six parkways and supplement the work of Louisville Parks and Recreation. President & CEO Layla George believes “arts and parks make us stand out compared to our peer cities. Our Olmsted parks and parkways have shaped the city. These parks are the center of neighborhoods and community gatherings,” including parties, weddings, and other family celebrations. She loves the liveability and size of Louisville and the “uniqueness and character of neighborhoods,” – Layla George, President & CEO, Olmsted Parks Conservancy such as Old Louisville, Cherokee Park, and the cast–iron facades of West Main Street.

Our Olmsted parks and parkways have shaped the city. These parks are the center of neighborhoods and community gatherings.

According to Layla, Louisville’s Olmsted parks have seen a massive increase in usage over the past year. “They have provided the locale for people to gather in a safe space with social distancing to meet up with family and friends, or just take a break from the stress of life. This is a unique period in time when Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision has held true for physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing in free public spaces anyone can enjoy regardless of socioeconomic background.” Layla looks forward to resuming planned in–person events this fall, and updates will continue into 2022 as they finalize plans with community and national partners for the Olmsted 200 (olmsted200.org) Bicentennial Celebration. Baptist Health ® Louisville A

s President of Baptist Health® Louisville, Larry Gray is proud of the city’s rich healthcare environment. “The Health Department’s handling of the pandemic and strides toward health equity shows the vitality of our health resources, not to mention the collaboration of the three major health systems and the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council.” On a personal note, Larry has lots of reasons to love Louisville. “My wife and I are empty–nesters who enjoy entertaining and love to cook, but we also appreciate the culinary talents of all the great restaurants here, along with the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables, farmers markets, and seafood.” They are fond of the arts and parks as well. “We are members of Speed Art Museum and are always seeking opportunities for engagement in the city.”

The Health Department’s handling of the pandemic and strides toward health equity shows the vitality of our health resources, not to mention the collaboration of the three major health systems and the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council.

Baptist Health® Louisville serves the city in its capacity for caring for the health of its citizens and gives back in many other ways as well. “We encourage our employees to get involved through volunteerism, such as the mayor’s Give a Day Week of Service. This year our group of eighty helped clean up Brown Park.” They “try to be good corporate stewards” through partnerships with organizations such as the American Heart Association, Twisted Pink, and American Cancer Society. Baptist Health® Louisville also provides athletic trainers for local sports teams.

Larry encourages more Louisvillians to get vaccinated against COVID–19. The Baptist Health® Louisville vaccine clinic is open from 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. First dose vaccinations are now available without an appointment for those 12 years old and above. (“All patients 12 to 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.”) “We also want to remind and educate everyone to get back to their routines with annual checkups and preventive healthcare measures.” Larry looks forward to Baptist Health® resuming in–person community education. ncorporating the city’s rich history into a vision for forward motion and progress is Kevin Cogan’s passion for Louisville. As CEO/Owner of Jefferson Development Group, Kevin Cogan honors “the sense of tradition deeply rooted in the generations of families and local companies continuously operating, that have not only survived but grown, matured, and developed greatness from within.” The nostalgia of Louisville architecture inspires Kevin as well. “We have tremendous historic district preservation – from Central Park and St. James Court to the Highlands, Cherokee, and Audubon Park to Southside Drive and the facades on Main Street.” – Kevin Cogan, CEO & Owner, Kevin also appreciates “the kindJefferson Development Group ness, spirit, and heart of the people

and the service industry’s special care” of this city. “Sometimes what’s wrong becomes the reputation or the image. We do need to address it, talk about it, and make good better. But there is more love than hate here.” Jefferson Development Group strives to promote civic pride and attract clients to Louisville. “From a corporate stance, we represent thinking big, thinking to the future, and thinking next level. We are constantly pushing the envelope in zoning and density. Without young workers coming in, corporations will not follow to Louisville. The youthful base is looking for excitement – for example, semi–pro and professional sports teams. Nashville, Atlanta, Austin, and Charlotte are moving forward with development and infrastructure. What can we do to attract young people here instead? You can’t tell a Fortune 500 company, ‘We’ll fix it after you get here.’” The question Kevin gets asked most often is, “What’s going on with One Park?” One Park is a $250 million proposed mixed–use development with apartments, retail, hotel, and offices. Its prominent location at Grinstead Drive and Lexington Road is “next to a major urban park at the gateway to Louisville’s downtown.” According to Kevin, “This has been done in other cities multiple times. But Louisville has not done it yet.” What does Louisville want as the “front door” coming into the city?, he wonders. “To be greater than great, you’ve got to fix what’s broken. “I believe we must look hard in the mirror. We need a true, independent, and honest assessment as to why we trail our neighbors in Nashville.” For more information on One Park and other Jefferson Development Group properties, visit jeffersondevelopmentgroup.com. 28 TOPS LOUISVILLE | June 2021

How happy are you that we can now be patio sitting and drinking bottomless mimosas outside? Before we venture out into al fresco dining let’s chat about the rules of business. The big question is, “Can you drink alcohol at a business lunch?” In the great era of the “Mad Men” power lunches we all know the alcohol was the meal. Times changed a bit over the last 50 years so here are the new thoughts.

1. You should know based on your profession (are you an attorney getting ready to head to court after lunch at _____ and maybe it’s frowned upon to not have your wits about you?) and your employer’s opinions of alcohol “on the clock”. Stick with those guidelines and of course, your gut. 2. The magic of networking. If you are in sales and relationship building, then you know nothing can build camaraderie like a glass of wine. Enjoy one drink - it’s not a good look to have two no matter what profession you are in. 3. Know your audience and use common sense. If you are going out with the Boss or the Board - always follow their lead. It’s better to play it safe than sorry.

Happy Hour

We love these! Most of our initial meetings at TOPS are scheduled for 4:00 - cocktail hour! You are allowed to drink regardless of your client. Everyone knows what a “Let’s have a drink” invitation means! If you’re able to handle yourself and get home responsibly, then you might allow yourself to have two. Another choice you can’t go wrong with for a casual business happy hour is Mexican! A couple of margaritas and some chips and queso and you’re all set. It all depends on the client and purpose of the meeting that will determine the location. Do you need somewhere more quiet and sophisticate or is it more of a laid back business lunch?

Meeting Etiquette 1. Always tip well and always be friendly and appreciative of your server. It’s just like the question about do you return your shopping cart after grocery shopping at Kroger? People can tell a lot about you from the little things that you do. We want to do business with people we like overall. 2. Always put your napkin on your lap. Doing this shows basic etiquette and makes you seem well put together from the beginning of your meeting. 3. Try your best not to talk with your mouth full. Your guest will be respectful to let you finish your bite before answering their question. Don’t you love it when you bite into a burger and someone immediately asks you a question? Laugh about it instead of feeling pressured to answer right away without swallowing your food first. 4. Ask questions! The main rule of thumb for a successful business lunch and impression is to listen more and talk less! On average, people report having a better experience when they were asked open-ended questions about themselves. A successful conversationalist doesn’t dominate the conversation, but keeps it moving. 

Leading a Meeting

We have all attended meetings that seem to go and on with no apparent end in sight. In your own company, you have probably experienced some of the worst examples...from meetings that continued long after their productive purpose had ended to “quick catch-ups” that devolved into two-hour-long chaos.

I

t really is the mark of an undisciplined organization to tie up their people’s time in unproductive or continual meetings. But, there are always going to be times when the only way to build a consensus or foster connection is through group interaction. Below are seven basic pointers of meeting management that will ensure your group is making the most use of your organization’s time when it is necessary to meet.

PREPARE EVERYONE

Distribute the meeting agenda, with supporting documents, before the meeting occurs. If people have not read that information before the meeting, you may need to defer any action for a future meeting. Editor’s Note: At TOPS, the agenda lives on a shared Google Doc that everyone can access before—or after —the meeting. Don’t ask us for any other tips regarding meetings: we’re reading this article and taking notes ourselves!

CONSENT AGENDA

Utilizing a Consent Agenda is a mechanism to avoid wasting time on routine or trivial items; basically, it is a list of regular, low-impact business items that aren’t likely to need discussion. State in the distributed agenda that issues on the Consent Agenda will be approved without any discussion unless a particular item is brought up by a committee member.

SHOT CLOCK

Set time limits for each agenda item. If discussion goes on longer than the allotted time, it should be tabled for another time. It is crucial to identify who will lead the discussion on each item.

GET INPUT

If there are controversial items on the agenda, connect with key influencers before the meeting to know where they stand on an issue. Be sure that you know where your key office leaders stand on any vote or discussion so there are no surprises.

SMART EXIT

Know when the meeting is over. Some people will always want to stay around and talk. Make sure you have clearly adjourned the meeting beforehand so that others may leave if they prefer. This may seem like more structure and standardization than is necessary for your business, but we promise: following these seven guidelines will pay dividends in the long run by maximizing your most valuable resource: your peoples’ time. Running a successful meeting is one measure of an organization’s efficiency. Because if you can’t run your own meeting efficiently, what does that say about how well the rest of your organization is functioning? 

When all else fails...treat yourself! 32 TOPS LOUISVILLE | June 2021

Using Robert’s Rules of Order (a form of parliamentary procedure) will save you considerable time for formal meetings—such as required annual meetings or Board of Director’s meetings— where official minutes need to be maintained. For less formal organizations, it may be helpful to write your own rules of order to help give your meetings some structure.

LEADER IN CITY DEVELOPMENT

City of Jeffersonville

BACKGROUND:

Mayor Mike Moore

“A typical kid from Jeff.”

TIME IN OFFICE:

Currently serving his third term.

WHY HE’S A LEADER:

Under Mayor Mike Moore’s direction and care, Jeffersonville is thriving. Established businesses are growing, and new ones are opening. Rather than dipping into taxpayers’ funds, it’s all funded by revenue. Ten percent of that revenue is going straight to Greater Clark County Schools, helping to build a strong future for the community. He also established Jeffersonville’s Promise, a program in which any student in town can receive two years free at Ivy Tech College upon graduation from high school. “I was frustrated by things not getting done,” says the Mayor. “When I was asked to run, I asked my father’s advice. He said to go for it, and so I did. He was a small business owner. I grew up in his restaurants. I saw how politicians would start showing up about three weeks before elections, trying to curry favor with people. I want to build real relationships, and I want my kids to be proud of our name and of Jeffersonville.”

On top of that, it’s of the greatest importance to keep everyone safe.” Thanks to Brandon’s leadership, Steak and Bourbon retained every employee throughout the pandemic, a tremendous point of pride. The company even gave out produce and meat from their coolers that employees came to pick up during the worst of 2020.

Truman Law Karl Truman

WHY HE’S A LEADER:

If there are two things to which Karl Truman has dedicated himself, it’s helping those in personal injury litigation and doing things to enrich the lives of our veterans. “It’s important to help people through difficult times,” he says, “and there’s nothing quite like community service.” The head of the Karl Truman Law Office and Leader of Personal Injury Law is also a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, having served for nearly three decades. Professionally, Karl is also an aggressive advocate for his clients while maintaining professional courtesy. “It’s important to do what is right rather than what is easy,” he says. “My competitive spirit motivates me to continue to sharpen my skills. The most satisfying thing is to see the result of a case that has had a direct and meaningful impact on someone’s life. A trend that concerns me is law firms whose objective is just to get as big as possible across the country, creating legal services that are somewhat of a ‘department store’ commodity. Some of these firms are advocating for non-lawyer ownership of law firms by hedge funds. I believe your lawyer should be someone you know in your local community.”

HOBBIES:

In his free time, Karl enjoys sailing with his wife, Jeanine. In 2019, they sailed 1,750 miles on a two week trip across the Atlantic Ocean from Hampton, VA, to Antigua in their sailboat. (502) 222-2222 | TRUMANLAW.COM TOPS LOUISVILLE | June 2021 83

for all body types Sometimes we spend years trying to find the perfect swimsuit that hits us in all the right places. We all want that go-to piece that we know will make us look beautiful and more importantly, feel beautiful. Well ladies, we’re here to help! We will be breaking down the do’s and don’ts to find the perfect swimwear style for your body shape so that you can walk that walk this summer season!

hen it comes to a pear shaped figure, you sort of have all the juiciness in all the right places. You just have to find the perfect way to highlight them! With this body type, you are curvy at the hips and smaller at your waist creating that natural “pear” shape. So when shopping for swimwear, you want to find pieces that balance out your proportions and povide good coverage for the bottom half. You want to avoid boy-short style bottoms or thick bands as those will draw attention to your curviest areas. Styles that are flattering for pear shaped figures are plunging necklines or a unique and eye-catching top that will draw attention upward therefore making the bottom half appear smaller.

he women who consider themselves small busted would be proportionately smaller in the bust area, therefore an A or B cup bra size.

Go for pieces that have minimal coverage that might have embellished details or bows and patterns, which create the illusion of a larger chest. Other winning styles would be triangle tops that help portray curves or padded push-up and halter tops that help create cleaveage. Also, take advantage of embracing a bandeau or scoop neck style top! With having a smaller bust, you’re able to wear those styles and be comfortable as well as supported.

he term “athletic” figure doesn’t necessarily mean decked out in toned arms and muscle definition. An athletic body shape basically means your frame is more up and down and with fewer curves. So therefore, to create the illusion of more curves look for pieces that might be less coverage to help create the illusion of a shapelier figure.

Ruched Cut Out One Piece Swimsuit, $55 | Aerie

Don’t be afraid to have fun with patterns and bold prints - they have a way of adding a feminine flair and the appearance of more curves, which is always a win! Another way to create beautiful curves on the bottom is to try choosing smaller style swimsuit bottoms. They have a way of making the backside look fuller... in a good way! And of course, tie-side bottoms are your friend! They enhance the look of curves while also allowing you to adjust them to fit your frame perfectly.

o all the curvy ladies, we love a good suit that works those curves!

A curvy body shape is one that is full throughout in the bust, hips, thighs, bum, etc. With that said, the main piece of advice we have for you is.. work those curves!

Other good styles are high waisted bottoms and asymmetrical tops, which draw the eye to the neckline creating the illusion of smaller and more feminine features. One tip to avoid is string bikini bottoms. The ties start to accenuate your hips which can be the widest areas on your body so you’ll want to turn the focus more towards your smaller areas.

Bryson is a retired military veteran with a science education and mechanical experience, “the perfect tools” for a Master Distiller. “Brough Brothers is a craft distillery that has direct roots to the West Louisville community,” which Chris says sets them apart from other distilleries. The brothers grew up in the West End. Their Distillery, located at 1460 Dixie Highway in the Park Hill neighborhood, allows them “to provide positive examples and direct economic impact” to the community. Woodford Reserve® Distillery

T

he distillation of fine Kentucky bourbon first occurred on the National Historic Landmark Woodford Reserve® Distillery site in 1812. Woodford Reserve® took up the torch in the early 1990s, putting in modern technology and three traditional copper pot stills to create unique flavors. Iconic Kentucky horse farms surround the distillery with its back deck overlooking a horse pasture, where the neighbor’s foals are out in the springtime.

Woodford Reserve® Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall has nostalgic attachments to the geographical location of her workplace. “The beauty is second to none. It’s like taking a step back in time to the relaxing, comforting Kentucky countryside.” When the bourbon barrels roll down the barrel run from the distillery to bed in the warehouse (a phenomenon known as “The Woodford Wobble”), she likens it to the “So Long, Farewell” children’s bedtime scene in the film “The Sound of Music.” Elizabeth received undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology at the University of Louisville before landing at Brown-Forman in 2009 as a Sensory

Technician in nosing and tasting. She worked her way up through R&D, quality control, and production facilities to become Senior Quality Control Specialist & Master Taster in 2016. Elizabeth assumed her current role in 2018. “I wear many hats. In addition to serving as spokesperson, the face of the brand, and brand ambassador, I work closely with Master Distiller Chris Morris.” Their annual Master’s Collection release is renowned for “innovation, flavor, and quality.” This month, be sure to get your hands on Brandy Cask Finished Bourbon Blend, the latest expression of the Woodford Reserve® Distillery Series, available exclusively at the distillery and select retailers. “This whiskey is a blend of Woodford Reserve Bourbon finished in American Brandy barrels and French Brandy barrels. The nose has delicate notes of caramel and chocolate-coated vanilla wafer laced with the faintest hints of cotton candy and citrus peel. The taste is of soft caramel and brown sugar mingled with a rich vanilla bean character. Fig and vine fruit round out the palate with a soft and powdery finish.” For more information, visit woodfordreserve.com and follow @woodfordreserve and @elizabeth_oneill_mcccall on Instagram.

Kentucky Peerless Distilling® Co.

A

ccording to Marketing and Public Relations Associate Tara Bowling, Kentucky Peerless Distilling® Co. originated in the early 1880s, before flourishing under entrepreneur Henry Kraver in 1889 as Peerless Distillery. Peerless shut down in 1917 to support war efforts, although Peerless remained available by prescription for medicinal use through the early 1920s. The distillery opened by fourth and fifth generations Corky and Carson Taylor in 2015. Kentucky Peerless® Single Barrel Curator John Wadell got his start as a bartender when he met Peerless® Master Distiller Caleb Kilburn. John was already familiar with the industry as a native Louisvillian. Caleb invited him to learn the business from the ground floor, from cooking the mash to distillation to a Single Barrel Tasting Board seat. Tara similarly rose through the ranks, from Distillery Tour Guide to Legal Assistant to Marketing.

e celebrate Father’s Day in the month of June. Whether you are a father to children of your own, a father to a four- legged animal at home, or a positive male role model to a classroom of children at school, we celebrate you! The day to day hustle and bustle of life can be exhilarating, yet exhausting. There are two different types of stress we encounter as busy adults. It is important to recognize the positive and negative effects stress can have on the body. Eustress is a good stress. This stress stems from excitement. We feel this “good stress” when we are about to receive a promotion, ride a roller coaster, or go on a first date.

Distress is a negative stress. Feelings of Jitteriness and exhaustion can be a result of distress. This stress is tied to mood, poor communication, and confusion. By learning to rest your mind and body, you can continue to be the superhero and a great leader to the lives of others.

SOCIAL REST

Do not let a busy schedule stop you from getting the physical and mental release that your body needs.

SPIRITUAL REST

Get outside and walk around your neighborhood with your kids or family members 30 minutes everyday.

Freely express yourself to people without feeling the need to please. Be authentic. Surround yourself with positive people that do not exhaust you. Prayer and meditation. Connect beyond the physical and mental and feel a deep sense of belonging, love, and acceptance.

A busy schedule may consist of soccer practice, school online courses with your children or grandchildren, and taking care of elderly parents. This will take its toll on your body mentally and physically.

Incorporate physical fitness and be a leader to your children or loved ones and help them lead healthy, stress free lives both mentally and physically.

Add in one calisthenic exercise daily to your cardio routine. • 25 push ups • 1 minute wall sit • 1 minute plank Also incorporate weights into your weekly routine. Meet with one of our trainers at Baptist East Milestone Wellness Center to set up a program that best suits your specific needs or make an appointment at our Oasis Spa to relax and unwind. By practicing these mental and physical release techniques, you will find that inner strength to tackle all obstacles and feel like a superhero to your loved ones that surround you. 

“I

t has been amazing and often eye-opening to find the commonalities between ministries from different parts of the state, to see how rural and urban needs and assets are so similar, and to learn from each other,” said Phyllis Platt, Ph.D. She is the executive director of Commonwealth Compassion Bridge and has 30 years’ experience working with community-based organizations.

Many of CCB’s partner organizations are “mom and pop” or smaller ministries. Some are organizations serving incarcerated populations and their re-entry into society; others are involved in foster care and adoption; and several partner organizations are helping people who have substance use disorders. Oftentimes, CCB forms a bridge of compassion by introducing a nonprofit to a relevant state or local governmental agency. Together, these organizations and agencies help even more people. “Capacity building, or strengthening ministries to do what they do in the best way possible, is a large part of what I do as director and what our board members do in their roles,” said Dr. Platt. CCB was founded in 2005 by Dr. Larry Martin and Greg Correll, “two men passionate about ministry support for small faithbased ministries throughout Kentucky,” said Dr. Platt. One of the key goals of CCB is to assist faith-based community organizations is “netweaving.” While networking is interacting with others, particularly in business settings, CCB co-founder Larry Martin explains that netweaving is “when God brings together people and groups to weave a new pattern in the way they work together to meet needs.” Dr. Platt tells the story of a CCB board member who found out that a Fazoli’s restaurant in Northern Kentucky was closing and had tables and chairs to give away. At a CCB board meeting, other members knew of a youth program opening a community-based gathering site in Eastern Kentucky. “As a result, a donor was able to make a connection with a ministry that had a need,” she

said. “Without CCB the two would likely never have known about one another.” Sometimes CCB connects nonprofits that are doing similar work but they just aren’t aware of each other yet. “Other times it can mean providing group or individual training, connecting people to resources, or helping access needed funding,” said Dr. Platt. “We may at times walk alongside a ministry leader by providing mentorship or a listening ear during start-up or at a key point in the life of the ministry such as when the time has come for the founder to retire or pass the baton to a new leader.” In 2008 CCB began engaging with partner organizations to address the opioid epidemic in Kentucky. At that time, they found out about NET Recovery, a device providing neuroelectric therapy (NET). According to Dr. Platt, studies in Kentucky and in Scotland have shown significant reductions in SPONSORED BY LG&E

withdrawal symptoms and cravings when NET Recovery is used for a week at the beginning of addiction treatment. Commonwealth Compassion Bridge, in collaboration with the National Christian Foundation, is raising monies to assist in clinical trials in the United States (taking place in Willisburg, Kentucky) to seek FDA approval for NET Recovery to treat addiction. “One key benefit of this research project is that people who need substance-use disorder treatment will receive it,” said Dr. Platt. Five men from Louisville, Lexington and a couple of rural communities in Kentucky were filmed as they went through a NET Recovery process. The resulting documentary, The Final Fix, was released in 2020 and earned 10 international film festival awards. “Walking together through the growth and development of a ministry, meeting a need, fulfilling a passion, or responding to a calling requires partnership,” said Dr. Platt. “CCB serves as a link between ministries, between people, and between communities to bring about change in the lives of individuals, families and communities.” 

TIA EDISON Keeping the Conversation Going

120 TOPS LOUISVILLE | June 2021

I

n the ongoing struggle for social justice and racial equity and with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) recently resuming in-person instruction, Tia Edison is involved with significant issues facing the city of Louisville. She teaches middle school math at a JCPS Accelerated Improvement School, where she works on the Racial Equity and Safe Return to School Committees. “I began my journey as an educator in 2010; since then, I have advocated and pushed for the closure of the achievement/ opportunity gap, which leads to the school to prison pipeline.” Tia is Chair of the Jefferson County Teachers Association (JCTA) Black Caucus and the Greater Louisville Alliance of Black School Educators Legislative Committee. “I currently sit on the JCPS Future State Committee where we are defining “diversity” and how to be more creative in achieving diversity within schools to meet diversity targets.”

For over 20 years, Tia has worked with the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (KAARPR), becoming a community organizer and currently serving as Secretary on the Board. “The Kentucky Alliance is the oldest grassroots social justice organization in the state. It has always been a driving force in the community around inequalities within education and the criminal justice system. The Alliance is a coalition of organizations collaborating on various campaigns.” During the most recent education campaign, the alliance pushed for a “No” vote on SB8, requiring school resources officers to be armed. “The bill inevitably affects the students who live in some zip codes disproportionately more than others.” The KAARPR advocates for more transparency in Metro Council funding and budget allocation of programs, or lack thereof. “The Alliance has always been a voice demanding

more sustainable economic development projects west of 9th Street. During Covid, KAARPR provided thousands of free PPE kits in the West End and South End of Louisville. More recently, they have led the occupation of Injustice Square, also known as Jefferson Square Park, demanding justice for Breonna Taylor and protesting police brutality.” Tia graduated from Emerge Kentucky in 2016. The “in-depth, six-month, 70-hour training program” provides Democratic women “with cutting-edge tools and training to run for elected office and elevate themselves in our political system.” She began to advocate for local and state policy changes related to the needs of the marginalized community. “In 2018 and 2019, I helped organize the statewide and local Kentucky teacher strikes. Currently, I am working on getting my certification in Racial Trauma Therapy and pushing this agenda into JCPS. I am collaborating with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) to research local data on black and brown students in mental health residential facilities and the stigma in the community.” Tia’s priority in education is “to create measurable goals for identifying and addressing racial trauma.” She is working with Dr. Steven Kniffley of Spalding University to introduce the Child Racial Trauma Conceptualization model in JCPS. “I recently presented a session called ‘Teaching and Learning on the Frontlines’ at the JCTA Women's Leadership Conference. Educators need more training on understanding microaggression, like invalidation and intent versus impact.” KAARPR is sponsoring her Racial Trauma Therapy certification. Her personal experiences of “the many levels of trauma” on

the Breonna Taylor protest frontlines have only intensified her understanding. “Racial Trauma Therapy provides a clear definition of race-based stress and trauma. This therapy will help individuals develop their racial identity, process their trauma, and develop skills for future trauma.” Tia’s first boyfriend was killed by gun violence in 1994. In 2011, her godson was murdered in a park in broad daylight. “As an educator, I have witnessed our students come to school year after year with heavier invisible backpacks. They come to school with more trauma than we are aware of.” Tia has lost two students to gun violence. She also taught a student who took the life of another young person. That student was the brother of one of her students that was killed. “His brother died in his arms in the middle of the street just five months before he took someone's life.” As the city has cleared out Jefferson Square Park in preparation for Derby visitors this spring, Tia shares what that place has meant to the people who gather there. “Injustice Square is a tangible example of diversity, equity, and inclusion created by broken people who found a purpose. It was a community built of mutual aid and donations. While seeking refuge in First Unitarian Church the day of the Breonna Taylor grand jury announcement, Travis Nagdy stood up and shared that he was suicidal and had bad depression just months before… However, when he came to Injustice Square, he felt the love and purpose he was looking for in life. Everyone felt a sense of belonging. They felt included in the movement. From all walks of life, every race and socioeconomic status, we were all equally loved and appreciated in that space. Yet when the sun went down, the tear gas and rubber bullets came out.” 

ow do you recognize the definitive moment an entertainer is born? For Vanessa Demornay, the answer is at once simple and emotionally, wonderfully complicated. Perhaps a lip-syncing Britney Spears impersonator started it all? “Oh, I can do that!” Vanessa says to herself as show host Taylor Demornay takes her under her wing. “She was so sweet and kind. She took me backstage and introduced me to the scene. I was fascinated, impressed, and enamored.” Vanessa was experiencing a difficult transitional phase of life when Taylor quite literally took her in, providing Vanessa a place to stay and a new family, the House of Demornay. Houses serve as families of choice in drag culture, giving “shelter, solace, and safety” to those whose families may be less than accepting of their lifestyle. Desiree Demornay started House of Demornay, and her encouragement and approval were significant to Vanessa.

Vanessa packs some makeup, a wig, and an outfit to the club at Taylor’s insistence. Her first performance is Spice Up Your Life by the Spice Girls and Cher’s Strong Enough. “I was hooked!” Taylor also taught Vanessa “how to be a good person, to be appreciative and humble.” Vanessa met Terri Vanessa Coleman, whom she affectionately calls “Mommie Dearest,” in Louisville in 2006. “She taught me how to

portray myself, aesthetically and visually as a work of art, and how to conduct business offstage.” The 2009 National Entertainer of the Year contest at the Palace Theater in Louisville was a defining moment for Vanessa. She had helped backstage and was a backup dancer since EOY 2005 when a friend who

worked in the theater suggested Vanessa become a contestant performing aerial acrobatics as her talent. Vanessa had long dreamed of the circus, so she figured out the rigging and staging with the help of a local company and an artist. “The crowd went crazy! It was like a dream. It was hard work, and I had bruises, but I won the talent portion and missed the overall title by only six points.” “I was ready to win in ‘09,” says Vanessa, “but I was not ready to reign.” For her talent at EOY 2010, Vanessa was inspired by Pink’s stunning live aerial acrobatic Grammy performance of “Glitter in the Air.” Vanessa had “elevated her costume and tricks” and began her performance playing a simple melody of the song on a grand piano. She performed her new acrobatic routine, ending with an explosion of glitter confetti and taking the title by a 75-point margin. Vanessa performed at The Connection Night Club in Louisville for ten years and Play Louisville for three years. “I want to shine a spotlight on Play Louisville for their fundraising and community involvement.” She has also appeared at drag brunches and dinners, which she believes is “the future of drag.” But what was Vanessa up to during the pandemic, when the entertainment industry was virtually on hold? Vanessa took a break as the alter ego of “Innovative Stylist, Theatrical Design

Specialist, Makeup Artist,” and Professional Beauty Educator Mikhail Schulz of J Michael’s Spa & Salon so that he could focus on his career. Mikhail comes from a family of adopted siblings. He is from Russia, his sisters are from India, and his brother is from Italy. Mikhail grew up in the theater and performing arts, including gymnastics and figure skating, and attended boarding school in the Dominican Republic. When he was 17, his biological mother gave him an ultimatum - to live with her or pursue a gay lifestyle. He packed up his Ford Taurus station wagon and drove all night to be true to himself and find his tribe. Starting this month, be on the lookout for a new show with Vanessa, Syimone, and Hurricane Summers at House Lounge in Old Louisville. In July, Vanessa will host the 30th anniversary National EOY event in a full-circle moment. She is preparing for a competition in Florida later this year. Everyone asks if Vanessa will ever appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race. She has been approached about it and considered it multiple times. “Let’s just say, ‘Never say never,’ and leave it at that.”  SPONSORED BY LG&E

But Play Louisville is so much more than a money-making venture for its owners. “When I was in the process of coming out, I was lucky to have an overall positive experience because of this community.” Play Louisville’s business model is all about giving back, raising over $750,000 to date for local charities through direct donations and free hosting of fundraisers. The club donates not only their space but complete staffing as well. 100% of the money raised at these events goes to charity. “We are a safe haven and community center.”

Pride Month is traditionally celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots of late June 1969. While most Kentuckiana Pride events have been postponed to October out of an abundance of caution, dance bar and nightclub Play Louisville is getting the party started this summer. For 7½ years, Play has been widely considered a social center of the city’s gay community.

Chris shies away from comparing and contrasting Play Louisville with other bars and clubs in town. “We are all a community, have a great relationship and work together. I am proud of our dance floor, drag shows, and entertainers’ stage. But we don’t necessarily compete; we each offer a different niche.” Ultimately, at Play Louisville, “We just want people to come out and have a great time with no judgment. We welcome everyone.”

Co-Owner/Manager Chris Galla is a former real estate agent who also flipped properties. But he always dreamed of being in the bar business. Chris called his friends who own Play Nashville to ask if they might be interested in expanding to their old hometown. It turns out they had been considering Louisville as the next step for over a year. “Then it took a year and a half to find the right location and renovate the building,” says Chris.

Play Louisville’s drag shows and video lounge might be just the ticket for those not into a crowded weekend party scene. Wednesday Open Stage Nights give aspiring performers the chance to practice their chops where they are “not judged but loved and embraced.” Thursday night is Ladies Night, primarily attended by the lesbian community. une may be national LGBTQ+ Pride Month, but in 2021 the Kentuckiana Pride Foundation will present the annual Festival, Concert, and Parade on October 8 & 9 at Big Four Lawn in Downtown Louisville. The Kentuckiana Pride Foundation is in its 21st year of operation and has “grown tremendously” in that time, says KPF President Rodney Coffman. This is Rodney’s 20th year volunteering with the 501(c)3 KPF, and he is serving his third two-year term as President after seven years as Treasurer. Rodney first became involved shortly after moving to Louisville in 2001.

With KPF’s history, “we have the confidence and the respect of the community.” According to Rodney, KPF has become more politically involved over the past 6-8 years, whereas before that work was primarily left to other human rights organizations in the area. “Each organization has its role, and we embrace them.” The Kentuckiana Pride Foundation and Festival is still all about pride and celebration. “I encourage you to attend Pride. I understand the apprehension. But if you try to make a genuine connection, bring a friend, and you will find that Pride embraces everyone, regardless of race, sexuality, or gender identity. I am always happy to share the experience,” says Rodney. “I am most excited about coming together to celebrate normalcy. This year, Pride is like a victory. ‘We’re here! We made it!’”
