MEREDITH + BLAKE

When Meredith and Blake met at a real estate networking event, they didn’t exchange phone numbers but definitely made a connection. Meredith ended up on the cover of a trade publication that wound up on Blake’s desk; he told a friend he was “going to marry that girl”. They ran into each other a few weeks later and she admitted she had tried to find him on social media but couldn’t, so he shot her a text and called her darlin’ (he’d looked her up on the Board of Realtors website). After their first date, where Blake took Meredith and her dog on a date to a farm, the pair was inseparable. Both born and raised in Central Kentucky, they bonded over a love of the Bluegrass State. The couple wanted a destination wedding that was within comfortable driving distance for their Kentucky guests. Meredith’s mother grew up in Asheville, NC and since she still had family there and the couple loved the cool town, they eventually chose the Diana Venue at The Biltmore Estate, which sits atop a hill with a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the mansion’s Christmas decorations as a backdrop. The wedding party rode in a vintage trolley from their respective hotels to the venue. DEC · 10TH

Blake wore a custom tuxedo, designed to look like the one owned by Meredith’s late father, which Mr. Lane had made in anticipation of the upcoming wedding. Blake also wore a piece of jewelry his father-in-law had given him before he passed. In his pocket, he carried a handkerchief from his grandmother, made from his late grandfather’s shirt and embroidered with a loving message. Blake and his groomsmen wore blue socks with the state of Kentucky printed on them. The bridesmaids' platinum colored dresses were simple and elegant. Each girl was given a necklace by the bride’s mother and a silver wrap from the bride to wear for the ceremony. The bride wore a diamond bracelet and earrings, borrowed from her friend, Shelia Bayes, who helped her get dressed the morning of the wedding. She also wore her matron of honor’s wedding veil, her grandmother’s fur stole and her great grandmother’s aquamarine ring. Her Kate Spade “Mouse” slippers were a gift from her mother, as a nod to her silly adult nickname.

Meredith's mother walked her down the aisle to a string quartet rendition of Coldplay’s “Yellow”. “I saw Blake at the end of the aisle and we both started crying. Then, I looked around at our closest friends and family who were all there to share in our special day, and I was so overwhelmed with love,” Meredith recalled. The flower arrangements featured white orchid blooms with abundant greenery and metallic details. Each bouquet had a horseshoe tied to the stems. The flower “girls”– the couple’s grandmothers– carried custom made wooden boxes with antler handles, a nod to the groom’s love of hunting. The officiant had the bride and groom write a list of things they loved about each other, which he read out loud during the ceremony.

Because of the beauty of the venue, the couple opted for more simple, refined decor, utilizing mixed metals, lots of candles, white floral arrangements and a crystal chandelier over the dance floor. Meredith and Blake are big foodies, so the menu made the most of the Biltmore’s phenomenal cuisine. From fried chicken and waffle appetizers with habanero honey to petit duck bruschetta with goat cheese and black truffle tapenade and a raw bar, guests loved diving into the delicious food. When the staff mistakenly tried to serve Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey during the reception, which was obviously unacceptable for the Kentucky couple, Blake had the staff run all over the Biltmore property, collecting bottles of Maker’s Mark Kentucky Bourbon to serve instead. The pistachio cake was whimsical and made to mimic the bride’s dress and bouquet, with wavy white fondant and orchid flowers cascading down the side. A custom rodent cake topper of a "Mouse" and "Shrew" (Blake's nickname) was the perfect finishing touch.

The couple did their Dancing With the Lexington Stars routine as their first dance to Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling" and both danced with their mothers to "You Are My Sunshine". It kicked off a night of love, laughter and lots of fun, with an awesome dance party. Their wedding party favors for guests were monogrammed selfie sticks, which the crowd loved. Meredith and Blake exited the reception in a tunnel of sparklers, held aloft by the loved ones who came to celebrate their wonderful wedding day.

CAMILLE + AUSTIN

Though they were friends throughout high school, sparks didn’t really fly until six years later, when Austin messaged Camille out of the blue on Facebook. Fittingly, he was asking her to go to a wedding with him. She suggested they have dinner together before the wedding, and everything clicked for her: Camille knew that this relationship was the one! Austin proposed on a Christmas trip to New York City where the couple stayed at the Waldorf. He surprised her with room service for breakfast. When she lifted the silver dome on her plate, there was a ring with “Will you marry me?” written in chocolate. The couple chose Camille’s family property for their wedding day. “I love that we get to revisit and live that day each time we go out to our farm,” she explained. Camille chose a show stopping gown from Cincinnati’s Bridal and Formal, which offered drama and presence. “Choose your dress pretty early in the planning process,” Camille advised. “It really sets the tone for your wedding!” Little floral details in her jewelry picked up on the beautiful lace of the gown. Her Kate Spade shoes offered a little sparkle. SEPT · 20TH

TOPS Weddings | 23

The walk to the aisle was long and scenic. Camille was in such a hurry that she kept stepping on her dress. Her father, who was walking her to the aisle, stopped to give her some advice: “Camille, slow down. You only get to walk down this aisle once in your life. Take your time and enjoy it!” She followed his words and truly soaked up the moment, resulting in a cherished memory that will last a lifetime. Camille carried a bouquet of mixed blooms in shades of white, peach, cream, yellow, purple and pink. Camille aimed to keep the flowers consistent throughout the day, so the same vibrant blooms were used in the reception décor and as flower crowns for the flower girls. The aisle was lined with scattered white rose petals.

TOPS Weddings | 24

Making the big day cohesive was so important to Camille that she found subtle ways to make the experience seamless for her guests. Pops of raspberry were found throughout the day, both as a color among her flowers, paper suite and dĂŠcor to actual raspberries in the pre-ceremony signature drinks! Even the champagne cake had raspberry filling.

TOPS Weddings | 25

One of Camille’s favorite parts of the day was the barn where the reception was held. She hung fabric at the entrance of the barn and her florist installed lush green garlands to create a stunning finishing touch. As guests entered, they were greeted by string lights, mercury glass accents, gold place settings and more beautiful florals. The bride remembered looking around to see all of that and the smiles on her guests faces as they helped her celebrate the love of a lifetime.

ALLISON + BRET

Though they had mutual friends while they attended Georgetown College and even had a class together, Allison and Bret only met when friends invited them to a trivia night at Drake’s in Lexington. Bret, a self-proclaimed trivia whiz, did his best to impress Allison. Their team won a Drake’s gift card, and Bret cleverly turned it into an opportunity to ask Allison out on a proper first date. When they began planning their wedding, they knew their families would be traveling from different ends of the state for the big day. Allison grew up on a farm in Eastern Kentucky and wanted to incorporate that country charm into her venue. Bret, who grew up outside of Louisville, wanted to showcase the best of the Bluegrass to his out of state relatives. Lexington was a perfect middle ground, as it was the city where the couple had first met. Their ceremony was held at the Second Presbyterian Church on Main Street. They chose Fasig-Tipton for the reception, as it offered beautiful outdoor spaces and has a strong connection to Kentucky’s equine industry. The bride gifted her bridesmaids matching pajamas to wear while getting ready. The bridesmaids’ dresses were from Twirl and the light green matched the eucalyptus in the bride’s bouquet and the décor. Two chiffon panels allowed each bridesmaid to create a neckline that was flattering for her. The groom gave his groomsmen socks featuring their favorite sports teams, which they each wore down the aisle. APRIL · 29TH

TOPS Weddings | 31

The bride wore a pretty A-line gown with romantic lace details on the overlay and a glittering silver belt. Bret’s grandmother, Linda Keifer, was an important part of his family who had passed away in recent years. Linda loved dragonflies, so Allison carried one of her dragonfly earrings in the bridal bouquet to honor her memory. The wedding planners, Epoch Affairs, were two of Allison’s close friends. She told them she wanted her day to feature lots of greenery, light flowers, wood and stunning lighting. From there, she turned it over to them. When Allison first saw her reception décor, she cried tears of joy.

TOPS Weddings | 32

Guests sat at round tables, decorated with white roses, hydrangeas and eucalyptus, accented with lots of candles that created a romantic glow. Silver chargers, glass votives, tall glass vases and white linens created a light, airy look appropriate for the spring nuptials. The sweetheart table was decorated with swaths of greenery and hydrangeas along with mercury glass candleholders. Lights were strung everywhere to illuminate the space. Signs and wooden décor were made by another friend of the bride, Jessica McKenny. Allison’s dad collects bourbon barrels, so he cut a barrel head, which Jessica stained and painted to serve as the couple’s guestbook.

TOPS Weddings | 33

Allison comes from a very musical family, as her father has always been in a band and her brother is in Nashville, pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. The reception band was made up of her dad’s lifelong friends and old bandmates. Her father and brother got up and sang several songs with the band. Allison and Bret shared their first dance to her parents’ wedding song. As the night wore on, guests enjoyed a special treat from their future sister-in-law’s family: Spalding donuts, served with bags that read “A Sweet Ending to a New Beginning”. Bret didn’t tell Allison where they were going for their honeymoon until the reception was over. He planned their trip for an entire year leading up to the wedding, keeping the details a secret and taking the stress of planning one more thing off his bride-to-be’s plate. When he finally revealed that they were bound for Jamaica, Allison was thrilled to head off to their island getaway as husband and wife.

A S H L E Y + D AV I D

A love of horses and Kentucky tradition inspired Ashley and David’s wedding on September 19, 2015 at Hermitage Farm in Goshen, Kentucky. Ashley and David are both from Louisville, which they said has always been a special place for their families. Although their educations have taken them different places over the years, they plan to make Kentucky their forever home. In 2007, the couple met unexpectedly while working together over the summer. They hit it off instantly, sharing a love of travel, adventure, family and horses. He later proposed in the paddock at Keeneland, which set the tone for their wedding celebration. Ashley, who grew up with horses, said as a child, her dream was to get married on a Kentucky horse farm. “I was very lucky when I met David that he, too, shared a passion for horses,” she said. “Hermitage Farm was a perfect setting for our wedding in that it combined our love of horses and Kentucky tradition.”

SEPT · 19TH

When creating the look for the bridal party, the couple wanted traditional attire with some personal touches to make it their own. For the bridesmaids, Ashley chose their dresses because they had a feminine classic look, which complemented the sheer ribbons hanging from their bouquets. For the groomsmen, David chose a classic black tuxedo with pops of light pink in their pocket squares and socks. While the couple wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding day, Ashley and David especially enjoyed some of the more quiet moments of the wedding, like their first look. “It gave us an opportunity to be together before the wedding officially started and enjoy a few minutes with just us,” David said.

TOPS Weddings | 40

The wedding ceremony was set in front of the historic farmhouse, which the couple had draped in garlands made of magnolia leaves, ribbons and many of Ashley’s favorite flowers in pink, white and green. A favorite memory of Ashley’s was when she rode alone to the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage. She said that she was so full of anticipation and excitement upon arriving at the front of the house. “It was a very special moment to see all of my family and friends, and then David waiting at the end of the aisle.”

TOPS Weddings | 41

The reception was held in a tent with the idea to recreate the feel of a formal ballroom setting in a picturesque Kentucky pasture. Guests found their seats by picking up gold horseshoes that served as the place cards and good luck favors. The couple spent a lot of time handpicking details from the linens to the floral designs to give the reception an elegant feel. Gold chargers, silverware, candleholders, cake stands and chivari chairs were offset by the light floral arrangements, which featured a mix of white and blush roses, hydrangeas, delphinium and ivy. Swaths of fabric draped from the ceiling of the tent created a luxurious, intimate feel while chandeliers cast an intimate glow on the gilt details below. Lounge areas were created to allow guests to take a break from dancing and to soak up the beauty of the reception. Ashley and David loved getting to see everything come together on the day of their wedding. They had spent so many months planning, and all of it culminated in a truly perfect day with their family and friends in the heart of horse country.

LAURA + KYLE

When Laura met her twin sister’s brother-in-law, she had no idea that there would be a love connection. After visiting New York to meet his family, she fell hard. They dated long distance before Kyle moved to Kentucky where they shared their first house together. They were gathered there with their closest family and friends when the couple’s boxer puppy came running up wearing a shirt that said, “Mommy, Daddy has something to ask you.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Laura had always wanted to get married outside with a rusticstyle wedding that highlighted the best that the Bluegrass state has to offer. While searching for a venue, the Georgetownraised bride decided to take a look at Evans Orchard. “When we saw how beautiful the vineyard and event barn was, we knew this was where we wanted to spend our special day together,” she remembered. The bridesmaids and groomsmen were decked out in looks that reflected the day’s style. The groom and groomsmen wore navy suits with silk trim and camel colored shoes, along with crazy socks for a silly touch. The bridesmaids were wearing Donna Morgan and Jenny Yoo dresses in different shades of champagne and blush: each carried a small bouquet of white flowers. M AY · 2 0 T H

Laura wore a whimsical Hayley Paige gown with a crown made of baby’s breath. Her pavé jewelry and shoes added a little sparkle to the romantic look. Her bouquet featured white blooms accented by greenery, wrapped with a piece of her mother’s veil and clipped with a small pin from her paternal grandmother. A special moment that made their ceremony unique was a surprise parents’ kiss. After Laura and Kyle said their vows, the officiant turned to their families and said, “Before Kyle and Laura have their first kiss as husband and wife, they would like to have one last kiss with the people that gave them life: their parents.”

For the reception, guests sat at round tables, covered with champagne table cloths and sheer overlays that offered a touch of gold. The table numbers featured pictures of the bride and groom at different ages. They also had a remembrance table with mini Evans Orchard apple butters for guests to take home.

A storm rolled through, blowing over several vases and threatening to ruin the day. But not even tornado sirens could change how Laura remembers her wedding, from her brothers-in-law dancing to the YMCA to the sweet speeches that touched their hearts. “I honestly wouldn’t change a thing,” she said. “I’ve never seen a sky like that before and how perfect was it to appear on our special day surrounded by our loved ones!”

S A R A H + M AT T

Sarah and Matt were introduced by a mutual friend in their junior year of college. They didn’t talk much over the summer, but they saw each other after they came back for the fall. He took her out on a date to Malone’s, and they’ve been together since. Sarah is from Pikeville and Matt was raised in Georgetown. They didn’t have a home church in Lexington, but Lynn Gray, Central Christian Church's administrative assistant and wedding coordinator, was helpful, friendly and welcoming to the couple. They loved the pastor in charge of Marriage Ministry, and decided it was the right choice for them. Both Sarah and Matt had special items they wore or carried to remember loved ones they had lost. Sarah had her grandmother’s handkerchief wrapped around her bouquet, along with a pair of her earrings, which Sarah’s mother had used as a decoration on her wedding cake! To honor her late father, Sarah had a piece of one of his blue shirts sewn into the bottom of her dress. She also wore one of her grandmother’s pearl bracelets, which were a gift from her cousin. As one of Matt’s wedding presents, she had cufflinks engraved with “I love you” in his grandfather’s handwriting. The bride and groom were both so eager during the ceremony that he tried to get out his “I do” before he even finished his vows and she tried to grab the ring right out of the pastor’s hand. After the ceremony, the couple retreated to their room to have a moment alone together. They arrived at their room to find that the Marriott had set up a candlelit dinner for just the two of them. That gave Sarah and Matt a quiet moment to soak up the fact that they were finally married before they went downstairs to celebrate with everyone. Sarah joked, “This also ensured that Matt got to eat dinner and could survive the rest of the night! For the couple, it was important that they have a menu not traditionally offered as a part of the standard wedding package. The staff at the Marriott sat down with the couple and to create a custom menu and layout of the space to accommodate their dream.

Flower-filled spheres were hung above the head table. The setup was a surprise to the bride, as Melody Rogers of Refined Social Events originally wasn’t sure she could pull it off. Flowers and candles decorated the length of the table, creating a beautiful focal point with lots of personalized touches like Sarah’s grandmother’s earrings used as decoration on end tables.

The classic modern décor was warm and enchanting. The walls were draped with fabric. Lounge areas were set up to give guests a break from dancing. Arrangements of white flowers at various heights gave the space visual interest. “There is nothing about that day that we would change. All of the vendors that we worked with were beyond amazing,” Sarah explained. “We were surrounded by all of our friends and family at an amazing venue with amazing vendors, amazing food and great music!”

While hiking at Red River Gorge, Cameron suggested that Kelsey take a few pictures of the beautiful sunset on his GoPro. When she turned around, he handed her a book titled Our Story, filled with pictures and important dates in their relationship. On the last page was a picture of Cameron down on one knee in the exact spot where they were standing with the question “Will you marry me?” Little did Kelsey know, Cameron had set the GoPro to record the entire moment. Cameron was born in Campton while Kelsey was born in Richmond. He attended Morehead State; she went to EKU. They both moved to Lexington for their careers, but didn’t meet until mutual friends in Louisville introduced them. The Wildcat fans love hiking, kayaking and visiting local breweries and restaurants. Naturally their wedding was purely Kentucky. Kelsey had always dreamed of getting married in her hometown and Chenault Vineyards provided a beautiful backdrop for their special day. While getting ready, Kelsey’s maid of honor, Megan Tracy, presented her with a “Letters to the Bride” book. It was filled with notes from her groom, close family members and the bridesmaids. Cameron gifted his bride a pair of Kendra Scott earrings and a necklace featuring her birthstone. She gave him a MVMT watch and a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses. APR · 22ND

She carried her great aunt Mary Jo’s handkerchief, a coin owned by her grandparents and the pearl earrings her mother wore for her own wedding 29 years before. The groom and groomsmen wore navy suits with floral ties, and their looks were completed with baby’s breath and rope boutonnieres.

Kelsey and Cameron had planned to exchange their vows in front of a cross, draped with hydrangeas, roses and greenery, that stood before a beautiful, sweeping view of the vineyard. When rain put a stop to that, they moved ceremony inside their reception hall in front of a wall with a water feature. “Don’t worry about what might happen and enjoy what is happening,” Kelsey advised. “You’re marrying your soulmate!” She walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of “Here Comes the Sun” and they braided a cord of three strands as a symbol of their unity. Kelsey remembered, “I was a little excited to be the new Mrs. Dunn that before our officiant even announced us as husband and wife I was already turning around with Cameron with hands up celebrating!”

A “Let Love Glow” sign directed guests to pick up glow sticks to use while dancing the night away and to hold up during the couple’s big sendoff at the end of the extraordinary night.

Laura was having coffee with her friend, Michelle Weisler, at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. Thom walked in for a meeting with Chris Matthews from Hardball when he spotted Michelle, who was also a friend of his. He walked up to the table to say hello just as Laura was sharing a risqué story. The next day, he emailed Michelle to ask about Laura. Knowing he was in the business of comedy, she replied with videos of Laura’s wacky comedy work, assuming he was interested in her professionally. Some communication mishaps and two months later, Laura’s agent connected her with Thom to discuss a television project. They shared funny videos for two weeks before meeting for lunch, which became bowling, arcade games, a couple beers and eventually, love. Now, Thom is Laura’s biggest project. As a home-grown Lexington girl and an official Breeders’ Cup Ambassador, there was hardly any question that horses would make their way into Laura’s wedding day. The Breeders’ Cup is held every other year at Santa Anita Racetrack, and as a bonus, the course is about 10 minutes from the couple’s home. “It was built in the 1930’s and stays true to that style throughout. It also backs right up to the mountains and the one thing I wanted was to get married in front of the mountains,” Laura explained. It was the first wedding and reception at the Santa Anita infield! Her stepfather built barn doors made from reclaimed Kentucky barn wood for the couple to stand in front of during their nuptials. A wooden plank walkway was created for the aisle, which was lined with lanterns. Her friend, music producer Jeremy Adelman, played the call to post before Laura rode into the ceremony in a horse and carriage with her father. Awaiting the couple at the end of the aisle was a bourbon barrel with Angel’s Envy bourbon and silver goblets. After the opening prayer, Laura and Thom had an “opening pour”. In lieu of a unity candle, they poured mason jars filled with dirt from Keeneland and Thom’s sister’s backyard in New Jersey (where he grew up) into a pot, where they planted a small tree.

The cocktail party featured bluegrass music played by Gabe Witcher from Punch Brothers and Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek. Angel’s Envy made all the signature cocktails, served in mason jars that said “Drunk in Love”. One of the bridesmaids, Olivia Hunter Swan, is the owner of Olivia’s Beer Cheese in Lexington, which made the perfect Kentucky cocktail snack.

Six foot tall marquee letters stood between the entrances to the cocktail party and reception, lighting the way with “LOVE”. The bride and her bridesmaids switched to fun, shorter dresses. A betting booth served drinks to guests. Used horse shoes stood on every place setting at the tables, each one named after a stakes race. Guests found their tables in a custom racing program. Flowers were arranged in mint julep cups and racing trophies for clever horse racing touches that paid homage to Laura’s upbringing. Shoshana Bean, recording artist and Laura’s fellow Hairspray original cast member, sang The Beatles’ “In My Life” with Laura’s songwriting partner, David Ryan Harris. The bride and her bridesmaids did a surprise flash mob where every member of the bridal party came out onto the dance floor and did a choreographed routine to a medley of songs meaningful to Thom. As they mingled, guests could enjoy three cakes: the main cake that tasted like Derby Pie, a UK basketball cake and a Yankees cake for Thom. Laura and her stepfather stained wooden fence panels, which he assembled into an open-air barn structure. In a side lawn, furniture, a fire pit and an old Airstream trailer offered guests a place to relax from laughing and dancing the night away.

a rich tradition of hospitality at The University Club at

ARLINGTON Arlington Mansion was the elegant ancestral home of the Hanger family and was presented to Eastern Kentucky University by W. Arnold Hanger in memory of his parents, Colonel and Mrs. Harry B. Hanger in 1967. In addition to the 15-acre bequest to EKU, 166 acres of farmland were also purchased by the Eastern Kentucky University Foundation. Robert R. Martin, who was President of EKU at that time, accepted the gift from Mr. Hanger and in a few short years, the Arlington estate was restored and transformed into what is now The University Club at Arlington. Care was taken to maintain the handsome spaciousness of Georgian architecture, which is noted for its high ceilings, square proportioned rooms and tall windows. Though remodeled, the home retains some original furniture and family belongings, which unites its authentic charm with the modern comfort of the space. Today, Arlington is a multi-purpose complex designed to accommodate the most discriminating tastes. The mansion lawn is perfect for wedding ceremonies, first looks and receptions since it overlooks a beautiful 18-hole championship golf course with pond. The interior of the mansion features a gorgeous staircase, sunroom, bay windows and balconies overlooking the lawn. The elegent dining room seats up to 100 guests, but guests can also slip away to the Rathskeller basement bar for a more casual feel. The club also offers a renovated air-conditioned mule barn which accommodates 150-175 guests. The barn consists of rustic wooden columns, stone gas fireplace, built-in bar area and its own patio space. The bridal parties and groomsmen have space where they can get ready and photographers may capture the pre-event action.

dance the night away with

ARTHUR MURRAY DANCE STUDIO Imagine your wedding day, surrounded by family and friends watching as you share your first dance. At Arthur Murray Dance Studio, their goal is to make it easy for couples to share their first moments as man and wife. Couples remember their wedding day for the rest of their lives. The first dance is one of the most cherished shared moments of the day. Years down the road you will take out a video and experience that moment all over again. Traditionally, the most popular dances are slow dances, but it has become common for couples to incorporate faster songs into their first dance. More and more people are interested in hybrid dances, which start out fast and end slow, or vice versa. It creates a much different experience. The first dance is an important moment, and couples are often nervous. Fear should not prevent you from enjoying your special time together. The biggest fear couples have is that they will not be able to learn. Arthur Murray instructors put students at ease. The hardest part is walking through the door; the rest is easy. Once couples get out on the floor, they think it’s great. Arthur Murray Dance Studio recommends starting lessons 3–8 months before the wedding, but they will help meet your needs regardless of the timeframe. The first step a couple should take is starting private lessons. It gives couples their own stress-free place. Lessons start by choreographing the first dance, and the instructor can also help choreograph other dances, such as the father-daughter dance. After private lessons, couples are encouraged to transition into group lessons. Arthur Murray Studios have taught over 10,000 couples to dance, and the Lexington studio is one of the Top 10 in the world.

Hunter Lisle, Owner Arthur Murray Dance Studio

Instructor Hunter Lisle strives to make couples feel comfortable dancing on their big day. His favorite part of working with couples is seeing their faces, smiling ear to ear, when it is all said and done.
