B UY LOW , SELL HI g H !

For many members of the Lexington Ventures in Profit (VIP) investment club, the extent of their stock market knowledge when they formed a partnership in 1992 was limited. The 15 women, made up primarily of college friends wanting to stay connected, decided to forego the typical clubs (i.e., playing bunco, book clubs, etc.) to learn more about investing in the stock market.

One of the original members and past president, Lisa Bush, received some great advice from her mother’s successful investment club regarding meetings, membership, monthly dues, stockbrokers, etc. and the new VIP Investment Club was born!

In the club’s early years, members were just starting their careers and families. Monthly meetings helped everyone stay connected and up-to-date on everyone’s lives. However, the group temporarily disbanded in 2006 when members found themselves overwhelmed with family and work responsibilities.

Fast-forward to 2018, when members entered the “empty nest” phase of life while some began retiring from their careers. With more available free time, the original members decided to re-start the club, and “VIP – the Sequel” began. Today the group has grown to include additional members,

and the camaraderie is stronger than ever with both old and new friends. The club now has 20 female members, including a president, treasurer, and secretary. Club minutes are recorded monthly, and stock-watch updates and discussions remain an integral part of the notes.

Once a month, members meet in one of the member’s homes to discuss and buy/sell stocks. Members research any type of company they like or any industry that seems particularly timely. For instance, during the early days of Covid, members were researching companies that were associated with the pandemic, such as pharmaceutical companies with a focus on vaccines or tech companies with an eye toward remote officing capabilities. Some members, noting their own increase in online ordering for home delivery during lockdown, decided to compare Air & Ground Package delivery companies such as FedEx and UPS.

Stocks are purchased utilizing a “pool” of funds comprised of monthly dues paid by each member and any net gains from recently sold stocks. Once a stock is purchased, a member is assigned to be the “stock watcher” for that company. The stock watcher is responsible for tracking the stock’s pricing trends and any headlines from the news regarding that stock. The stock watcher makes recommendations as to whether the club should buy more shares, sell or hold existing shares.

Current president Susan Dean has enjoyed learning about different industries. “We’ve made some really smart, wellresearched purchases and have enjoyed success with many of the stocks in our portfolio,” said Dean. “We’ve also had a few less successful buys, but even with these purchases, we have learned valuable lessons for investing. The most important element of the club is the social connections we’re continuing to maintain while continuing to learn.”

Dean recommends giving an investment club a try! All that is required is a desire to learn about the stock market. Once you have a group of interested investors, you will need to form a legal entity and create a partnership agreement which you can do online. Next, you establish operating procedures to represent how the club wants to work. You will then need to open a brokerage account for investing in the market. There are so many valuable resources available to help with setting up a club, as well as to teach members how to research companies and make informed decisions on buying stocks. The NAIC (National Association of Investors Corporation) and Bivio (investment club software) have both been terrific resources. You will need software to keep track of your purchases and sales and to issue tax returns to members at the end of each year.

If you or someone you know has questions about forming your own investment club, check out the following tips to learn more!

want to invest?

One of the biggest barriers that prevents people from investing in the stock market is a lack of knowledge. With all the jargon involved, teaching yourself how to do it can feel like an insurmountable challenge. But investment clubs prove that it’s not only possible – it’s easier than you think! Here are some tools to help you get started.

apps

Many brokerages have apps that put investing in the palm of your hand. If you are investing as an individual, these apps are a perfect way to get started. These apps can also help you keep track of stocks when you’re on the go. Beware of apps that are new startups – like any fresh venture, they could be a hit or a miss! Likewise, you have a lot to think about when it comes to cryptocurrency.

bivio

Want to start your own investment club? You’ll need help! Bivio is a management tool designed specifically for investment clubs. Visit bivio.com to learn more.

naic

The National Association of Investors Corporation set up betterinvesting.org to help individuals educate themselves about the stock market. They have great resources to walk you through the process of starting an investment club – or find an already existing investment club to join that’s near you!

investopedia

There’s not much to know about investing that you can’t learn at investopedia.com! They’re a great resource for all the latest investing buzz.

nerd wallet

This site is a first stop for anyone trying to expand their financial literacy. Visit nerdwallet.com to learn more about stocks – and beyond.

robo-advisors

Intimidated by all the legwork? Utilizing an automated investing service – often casually referred to as a “roboadvisor” – can help you get your feet wet. That said, it often takes the thrill out of buying and selling. They’re typically not a great option for investment clubs for that very reason. •

Community Trust Bank celebrates their new EVP Regional President of the Central Region

Billie Dollins

With over 40 years of experience in the banking industry, Billie Dollins knows more about retail banking, commercial lending, Wealth Management, and mortgage lending than most people will ever know. Recently promoted from her role as Community Trust Bank’s Market President overseeing Frankfort, Georgetown, and Versailles, Billie now serves as the EVP Regional President of the Central Region. Congrats Billie!

During her professional career, Billie has been highly involved in her communities, serving many civic and non-profit organizations. In 2018, Billie was Chairperson for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women luncheon, and was recently nominated as a Woman of Impact for AHA, a 9-week competition which kicks off on February 3rd. She has also served on numerous boards, such as the Lexington Humane Society, Living Arts & Science Center, American Cancer Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Lexington Dream Factory, and many more! Currently, she serves on the board of the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce as well as Women Leading Kentucky’s Advisory Council.

Seemingly, Billie has always been incredibly driven with involvement, as she is a graduate of ABA’s Stonier Graduate School of Banking, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School Aresty Institute of Executive Education, Mid-West Trust School, Leadership Kentucky, Leadership Lexington, and Leadership Frankfort.

Though it might not seem like she has much extra time on her hands, Billie ensures she always has time for her loved ones, including her wife, Lisa, who has been by Billie’s side for 21 years, her two sons Hunter and Mac, her parents and three siblings, and beloved pets Dudley, Lucy, and Howie. Billie says her blood family, along with her work family, are two of the most important things in her life.

Besides her family, Billie is also passionate about being the best leader she can be, showing kindness to everyone, laughing loudly, playing golf with her friends, cheering on the Las Vegas Raiders, and listening to classic rock. In fact, she is crazy about the band Heart, who she has seen in concert 26 times! Coincidentally, her favorite song of theirs is Crazy on You.

We once again want to congratulate Billie Dollins on her promotion to Community Trust Bank’s EVP Regional President of the Central Region and can’t wait to see what she does next!

LoveLANGUAGES

Since its publication in 1992, The 5 Love Languages has sold over 20 million copies. Dr. Gary Chapman’s approach to better understanding our relationships offers simple, straightforward guidance to help you better “translate” how you and your partner show affection.

The concept is easy to grasp: Chapman posits that we express our love and appreciation for those around us through one or more of five “languages.” We often have one primary love language that we best understand and notice, as well as one which we typically default to when showing our love. Chapman explains that by better understanding how you express love, how you most easily see love and how your partner expresses it, you’ll experience deeper and richer levels of intimacy with your partner.

This isn’t to say that we all only speak one love language. Each of the five languages is absolutely essential to any relationship. Rather, Chapman says, we simply tend to feel best when our partner puts effort into our preferred love language, such as receiving compliments. On the other hand, we may barely even notice when our partner shows love in another way, such as taking out the trash.

Interested in discovering your own love language? Visit 5lovelanguages.com and take the quiz! We recommend encouraging your partner do the same and having a little chat about how you each “speak” love – and how you can better “hear” each other!

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION

Everyone loves getting compliments. For people who prefer this love language, it’s more than nice; it’s essential to helping them feel seen and understood by their partner. Verbal encouragement, frequent expressions of love and words of thanks are important to this person. If your partner values Words of Affirmation, take time out of your day to occasionally say aloud the nice thoughts you have about them. If you get tripped up on your words sometimes, try writing these things down.

If this is how your partner most often expresses their love, make a point to notice and acknowledge their kind words. Save their letters, love notes and cards. Genuinely thank them whenever they pay you a compliment or offer you words of support.

Quality time

Every couple spends time together. However, for someone who prefers Quality Time as their love language, simple proximity may not always be enough; being completely distracted when you’re together may sometimes feel like a slap in the face. Of course it’s impossible to be completely engaged 100% of the time – and your Quality Time partner certainly doesn’t expect that! Instead, just make being present a priority whenever you’re able. One way to demonstrate the effort you’re making is to make little observations about your partner in the moment, such as; “I love the way your eyes look in this light,” “You look so handsome today,” or “I love how your face lights up when I say I’m taking you out to dinner.”

If this is how your partner expresses their love, remember that the most important aspect of this love language is reciprocation; it takes two to tango in Quality Time! Be present and engaged with your partner.

How to “speak” this love language:

- Put down your phone at mealtimes

- Plan 15 minutes in your day for uninterrupted “us” time

- Make eye contact whenever they speak

- Plan vacations together

- Have special rituals, like watching Yellowstone together

- Text them during your lunch break

- Take walks together to chat

- Run errands together on weekends

Gifts for a Quality Time partner:

- 2-person blanket for Netflix time

- Weekend getaway trip

- Gift certificate for your favorite shared hobby

February 2023 | TOPS 41

ActsSERVICE of

This may be the trickiest love language. Not because it’s complicated but because it’s so simple; people who prefer this language believe that actions speak louder than words. They feel appreciated when their partner helps them or anticipates their needs. They want a partner who shows up for them in practical ways.

If your partner shows their love through Acts of Service, it’s absolutely essential to reframe even simple household chores as tiny little demonstrations of their affection. While every time they take out the garbage isn’t exactly a sonnet, notice when they do so without being asked or when they pick up “your” chores without complaint. Remember to occasionally thank them for all the ways they show up for you, your family, your household and your relationship.

How to “speak” this love language:

- Offer to make dinner

- Handle errands on a busy week

- Be a handyman for the day

- Doordash their comfort food when they’re stressed

- Do chores without being asked

- Take their vehicle to a car wash

- Make their coffee every morning

- Give them “the night off” with kids or cleaning

Gifts for an Acts of Service partner:

- Coupon books

- Breakfast in bed

- Stay at an all-inclusive resort

Physical touch

Partners who prefer shows of Physical Touch crave closeness. They want to hold hands, hug, kiss and snuggle. But this love language isn’t always that obvious. These partners feel appreciated through all kinds of physical contact, which includes casual touches that you don’t even think about, such as placing your hand on the small of their back while you’re walking down the street.

When they’re stressed, tense, sad or exhausted, simply rubbing their shoulders can mean the world to them. If you can’t physically be there for them, FaceTime together rather than texting or a simple phone call so that it feels like you’re present with them.

If your partner expresses their love through Physical Touch, bask in any contact you have with them. Notice all the times throughout the day that they touch you. Express your appreciation for how that feels.

How to “speak” this love language:

- Take a walk together while holding hands

- Snuggle on the couch to watch a movie

- Play with their hair

- Sit side-by-side whenever possible

- Give them a long hug

- Touch their knee in the car

- Give them a little kiss on the forehead

- Lightly touch their arm to get their attention

Gifts for a Physical Touch partner:

- Massage oil

- A night out for dancing

- Couples’ spa weekend

Gifts

This may seem like the most obvious love language. Who doesn’t love getting gifts?! But it’s actually one of the most misunderstood. Contrary to popular thought, they’re often not materialistic; they’re soft-hearted and nostalgic! Many people who prefer this love language hate getting gifts that don’t feel meaningful or personalized. They view gifts through the lens of what message the gift conveys and why you chose it; they see gifts as a physical memento of something you love and appreciate about them.

If your partner expresses their love through giving gifts, take time to really appreciate the things they give you – and for goodness’ sake, don’t return or re-gift it! If you suspect you know the reason they picked the specific gift, definitely speak up; these partners love knowing that the recipient “gets” it! That said, if it feels like there isn’t a particular “why” behind the gifts they give you, they may simply be trying to win you over.

How to “speak” this love language:

- Send them “just because” flowers

- Buy them souvenirs from your travels

- Have lunch delivered to their office

- Leave little gifts on their pillow

- Never miss a holiday, birthday or anniversary

- Buy them something they mentioned off-handedly

- Pick them fresh flowers

- Give them your favorite t-shirt or hoodie

Gifts for a Gifts partner:

- Tickets to see their favorite band

- Memorabilia from a favorite movie

- Jewelry that meets their preferences •

horoscopes:

aries (march 21 - april 19)

F c l F e

Jupiter spends the first several months of 2023 in your sign; this will bring about an open mindset that sets you up for new endeavors. In mid-April, a new moon and solar eclipse in your sign means it’s time to start manifesting what you want for the rest of your year. But know that the theme of this year for you is moderation; make strategic decisions rather than going in horns first.

taurus (april 20 - may 20)

You have always been about financial security, so you’re hesitant to make big changes. 2023 will be a year of slow, steady shakeups rather than big money moves. At the start of March, start contemplating what will satisfy your dreams of doing something fulfilling and meaningful. In mid-October, structure the end of your year.

gemini (may 21 - june 20)

Three retrograde cycles of your ruling planet, Mercury, will offer big shakeups for you in late April, late August and mid-December. Fortunately, these all pass through logical, steady earth signs –qualities that can help balance your sometimes-flighty air sign. Use these opportunities to focus on your long-term financial goals.

cancer (june 21 - july 22)

You might find yourself in a financial power struggle in February and early March. However, Saturn moves into your house of expansion for the rest of the year, making you feel more adventurous. Remember to research your decisions before diving in, but don’t talk yourself out of good opportunities. Soak up financial literacy this year!

leo (july 23 - august 22)

This could be a year where you carve out your own lane to best utilize your talents and skills. Lucky opportunities will be opening up for you through mid-May, so embrace some newness. Your natural charisma will get a boost mid-November, so use that silver tongue to pitch new ideas or find new clients. 2023 looks bright for you, Leo!

48 TOPS | February 2023

virgo (august 23 - september 22)

You’re known for your practical mindset. However, it’s essential to keep an open mind this year if you want to meet your goals. Shaking up your all-important routines can help uncover some opportunities you would’ve otherwise missed. Mid-May through the end of the year, you’ll have some chances to cement important partnerships.

libra (september 23 - october 22)

As the sign of the scales, it’s crucial to have a balanced outlook on your finances this year. Late February will have some excitement around new career opportunities; it’s important to weigh out all the possibilities. Early September through December could see your financial growth pumping the breaks, but remember that it’s just a temporary setback.

scorpio (october 23 - november 21)

You’re going to be very future-focused in 2023, but make this your mantra; big dreams need action to back them up. That said, this isn’t a year of going hard at your goals but rather allowing yourself to chase your bliss. A little financial luck will be on your side, allowing you the space to explore what could be – and to go for it!

sagittarius (november 22 - december 21)

Not satisfied with your current job or financial setup? The first quarter is the time to do something about it. Have big discussions, advocate for yourself and give voice to your ideas. If you do this, you’ll be set up from mid-May through the end of the year to create a stable stream of additional income.

capricorn (december 22 - january 19)

You’re a bit of a stickler for the rules. The energy at the start of the year is encouraging you to rebel a little bit; it’s time to experiment with some new financial options. At the end of August, you might feel the pull to shake up your career as your negotiating skills hit their peak. Don’t put yourself last when your birthday rolls around – it’s time to treat yourself!

aquarius (january 20 - february 18)

You’re willing to take risks other people might pass up, and the first quarter of the year is all about breaking up with tradition. Speak up with your unconventional ideas and allow yourself to picture life outside the box! Diversifying your investments will be key for you in 2023, but be sure to wait until the timing is right.

pisces (february 19 - march 20)

Your giving nature may have you contemplating ways to give back this year; do it, but be thoughtful about when and how much you give. Mid-March to mid-April will be a great time to pay your personal finances a lot of attention, especially if you need to save some money for a rainy day. •

Trusty Brett

Community Trust and Investment Company

While studying finance at the University of Kentucky, Brett Trusty sparked an obsession with stocks, bonds and financial planning. This led him to join a national retirement services company upon graduation and, 16 years later, he’s still at it as a vice president with Community Trust and Investment Company (CTIC).

“CTIC’s Wealth & Trust Management team offers financial planning and trust management, but my expertise is on the employer-sponsored retirement plans side of the business,” Trusty said. “I have worked with so many employees who think they will end up working until they die, but nobody had ever taken the time to show them the numbers, and show them that there’s a way to retire with peace of mind. It’s rewarding to provide a path for those who are discouraged and confused by retirement benefits.”

Now, in 2023, Trusty’s mission is as critical as ever.

“While the steady rise in interest rates and high inflation have proved to be difficult on the markets and, as a result, on our retirement accounts, it’s important to focus on what your long-term objectives are,” he advised. “Continue to save as much as you can in your retirement accounts and while the major indices have dipped, don’t let short-term events dictate a change in your long-term plan.”

Ruddick Rob Republic Bank

With its unique combination of size, expertise and family values, Republic Bank offers its clients the best of both worlds in terms of access to resources and personal attention. It’s a combination that Rob Ruddick, Republic’s business banking officer, is quick to emphasize.

“We are large enough to offer the best financial services available,” he explained. “But we are also a familyowned company that takes great personal care of our associates and clients. My career has revolved around service to others — finance is just a way to serve the needs of the community.”

Focused on providing lending and depository solutions to businesses of all sizes in his role with Republic Bank, Ruddick has found that he continuously defies clients’ stereotypes about what financial services can be and the role that bankers can play in their lives.

“Stay away from cookie-cutter advice and work with someone who will adapt to your unique needs,” he recommended. “People think that bankers have such an easy schedule, with all of the national holidays off. But I take calls in the evenings and on weekends. When clients need me, that’s when I most need to be available.”

Watson Victoria

Edward Jones

Aspart of a full-service brokerage firm with processes established over a 100-year history, I partner with my clients to help create and maintain reliable streams of income throughout retirement, make charitable gifts, choose the best social security strategies for them, organize their family finances and more

I experienced how investing positively impacted my family, and I want others to experience that, too. As a guide and accountability partner, the most rewarding part of my job is when a client finally gets that vacation home to have family memories in or writes that check for their child’s tuition.

And in addition to the rewards of client success, I find fulfillment in working with neighbors in a region that is second to none.

I love being a part of this community for several reasons, but the way folks here appreciate good service and support small businesses is incredible; I have clients from all backgrounds that have various resources. It takes guts and vulnerability to ultimately partner with someone like me to reach your goals, and it’s never too late to start.

Koonce Jeff

Community Trust Bank

Through the many financial services offered at Community Trust Bank, Market President Jeff Koonce finds fulfillment in the ability to make a difference in his clients’ lives.

“I like the idea of being able to assist people in realizing their financial goals, whether that be owning or growing a business, buying a home or planning for retirement,” he said. “The most rewarding part of working in finance has been the many client relationships that have grown into trusted friendships over the years. Community Trust Bank truly allows me to view the banker/client relationships as partnerships.”

And there is no place Koonce would rather build those relationships than here in Central, KY, where he feels confident there is a lot of opportunity for financial success in 2023. He noted that Kentucky is much better positioned for financial success this year than many nearby states are, and that helping his neighbors achieve financial wellbeing in the Bluegrass is majorly fulfilling.

“Being local, we sometimes take for granted our area’s robust business growth, quality of life and a higher education system that is second to none,” he reflected. “Kentucky is a great state in which to live, work and play!”

Lashbrook Chad

Independence Bank

AsKentucky’s fifth-largest bank, with almost $3.5 billion in assets, Independence Bank operates locations in 15 counties and holds a charter that dates back more than 100 years. In all of that time and across all of that success, the bank has always operated on the primary pillars of giving back to its communities and always hiring the right people to build it from the ground up in new locations.

Chad Lashbrook, vice president and senior commercial lender, explained that this approach is what has allowed Independence Bank to continuously meet the various financial needs for so many clients, and that doing so satisfies his goals as well.

“Helping people realize their dreams is without a doubt the most rewarding aspect of a career in banking,” he explained. “Whether it’s originating a mortgage for someone’s first home or dream home, providing operating capital that allows small businesses to expand and hire more people or financing investment real estate purchases to help an investor build wealth, equipping customers with the tools and capital they need to reach their goals in life and business is undoubtedly the most satisfying component what we do.”

York Lawrence

ProActive Advisors

Founded by Lawrence York in 2008, just as the Great Financial Crisis was taking its toll on the world economy, Proactive Advisors not only survived the downturn, but prospered as clients found that it was protecting them through newlydeveloped investment methodology and hands-on management services.

“Finance is both an art and a science. It requires anticipating where things are moving, York explained. “It’s like a never ending, real time chess game--good for the curious mind.”

As we enter 2023, York and the rest of the team at ProActive Advisors will be using their financial expertise to continue protecting clients’ wealth and planning for their future.

“2023 is a pivotal year coming at the end of a long-term debt cycle,” York said. “The financial paradigm is changing and rear-view mirror investing anchored in a buy-the-dip mindset is likely to greatly disappoint. Realize the markets are dynamic and change with political and economic events. My best advice is to be sure you invest with a sound risk management strategy, not simply diversification and passive rebalancing.”

Inspired by lessons passed on from his grandfather, Matthew Roth embodies the mission of Truist Financial as a wealth advisor working with high-net-worth individuals and families to provide holistic financial planning, investment advising, insurance evaluations, business evaluations, estate and trust evaluations and much more.

“To quote the A-Team, ‘I love it when a plan comes together,’” Roth said. “I love looking back to the first meeting with a client and then seeing where they are today and feeling a sense of satisfaction that I was a part of that. For some clients, that’s watching them build their net worth. For others, it’s seeing them realizing the goals we set with them in those early meetings.”

Forcht Bank

Forcht Bank provides an astounding range of deposit, loan and treasury management services — everything from business money market accounts and sweep accounts to business lines of credit and investment real estate. So it’s understandable why Larry Forester, Senior Vice President with Forcht, wants to clarify that he and his colleagues are much more active than many might think.

“The biggest misconception about the finance field is that bankers just sit at their desks all day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,” he joked. “We are a relationshipdriven industry, which calls for building relationships outside of the bank.”

Forester is most proud of the way that his job can make dreams come true, while allowing him to give back to the community where he lives. And when it comes to offering go-to advice for those looking to gain better control of their finances this year, his philosophy is clear.

20 questions with Paul Chartier

Lexington is an amazing place to live!

A Spotlight on Lexington Celebrities

Lexington has such a rich history, founded by pioneers in the late 1700’s, and through the decades this city and region have developed into a diverse, lovely, charming area. Clearly, so much of our fabric are the worlds of Bourbon and thoroughbreds, a combination of industries like no place else in the world. We have such historical characters, some from here, some impacting life here such as Henry Clay, Daniel Boone, Mary Todd Lincoln, John Y Brown, Jim Host, Isabel Yates...Through the years, companies like Toyota, TempurSealy, Lexmark, Valvoline, Alltech, and many others have added to life here. Further, having a world class university and the oldest college west of the Allegheny Mountains adds to the uniqueness of Lexington.

Like any city, Lexington is not perfect, neither historically nor today. There is a significant blemish on Lexington, because of its slave and slave trading activity. That past helped Lexington become, and continues to become, a diverse city, as we almost mirror the demographic diversity of the US. Recently, Lexington has had a gay mayor, currently a female mayor, a female fire chief, a Black Police Chief, the most diverse city council ever, now having an Asian Americanas Vice-Mayor. To brag a bit, Lexington continues to rank very high on the annual Municipal Equality Index. There have been social injustices acknowledged by most, and there continues to be an effort to make Lexington better.

Lexington is clearly a compassionate city place with a great heart. Our vibrant Non-Profit organizations serve as a safety net for just about any imaginable issue for our community and it’s so inspiring to witness. For anyone with a passion and skills, it’s so easy to get plugged into any organization that helps people and clearly, we are a city that ‘runs to the problem’!

On a recent episode of CBS Sunday morning a psychiatrist shared a story about what creates happiness in people, in a word Relationships. Lexington is the perfect sized city to be able to easily establish relationships and it’s so invigorating to live here. Someone said, ‘going to work each day, I get to work with my friends’. It’s common to see our friends every day, in a work setting, out dining, while volunteering, and walking down the street. People here are visible and relevant, and ‘it doesn’t work for people here to think they’re a big shot”

All said, Lexington has a unique place: the Bourbon and Equine lifestyle, beauty, ease to enjoy vast recreational opportunities, a rich history, a vibrant and diverse dining and music scene, culture for so many...many cities can make that claim. To me, what makes Lexington truly special are the characters that live among us, and in this series of 20 Questions, we will be introduced to wonderful people who help make Lexington a special place to live. The sole aim with this 20 Question series is to honor and celebrate these special people now...let’s enjoy these wonderful people!

pantrypurge

Raise your hand if you’re already getting stir-crazy. Since you’ve got excess energy to burn, why not get a jump on your spring cleaning by tackling your messy pantry? Whether you’re hoping to start a totally new organization system or you simply want some kinda order in there, we have tips to help you have a perfect pantry in 2023!

trend: Bins & Baskets

TikTok has made pantry organization an art form (just search for “pantry restock” and you’ll see what we mean. So satisfying!) Most organizers prefer clear containers, as they allow you to see what’s inside at a glance. But wire, wooden and wicker baskets remain pantry staples for aesthetic reasons. Just a word of warning; if you’ve always struggled to keep up with organizing containers elsewhere in your home, maybe start small at first.

February 2023 | TOPS 75 HOME TIMBERLAKE

clean s ep!

get set up

Before you get started, gather up all the materials you will need. First, bring over your trashcan for items you’ll be throwing away and a box for items you might donate. You’ll need to have cleaning supplies so you can clean as you go. You might want to grab a notepad to make a list of items you’ll need to restock. If you want to use new organizing containers and dividers, have those on hand.

evaluate

Take a look at the pantry. What isn’t working for you? What works really well? Most of us have little annoyances about our pantries, such as items we frequently need being too high up for us to reach. Take that into account when you’re placing items back; you may wish to move some things around to make your pantry work smarter for you.

zoning ordinance

It’s tempting to try and do the whole pantry at one time; after all, you’re probably considering a new way of organizing things. But from experience, tackling the whole thing will lead to more confusion and chaos! Instead, tackle the project one shelf or section at a time.

Keep your mind focused on each individual shelf or section as you work. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed with the scope of the entire project, the state of the rest of your kitchen or even how you’re going to make dinner; be present in the moment (and order a pizza later.)

remove and sort

Remove everything from your chosen shelf or section. Sort each item as you go, tossing anything that’s expired or unwanted and donating anything unopened and unexpired that you don’t need. Remember that you’re making room for new things. And it goes without saying that you should throw away anything that any bug or pest has infested.

If you have items that you’d like to reorganize, set them aside on a counter, grouped by their future home. Don’t worry about getting too specific; grouping them by their future shelf would be just fine.

TOP Tip: Use a permanent marker to write the expiration date on the top of any cans; it may also be helpful to write what’s in the can do you can see the contents from above without shuffling everything around.

THE HOME EDIT
C. BRANDON INGRAM DESIGN

scrub-a-dub

It’s time to clean up! If there are crumbs, heavy dust or flour, use a vacuum handle attachment first; pay attention to the corners. Next, wipe the shelf down with a damp cloth; soap and water is fine, but feel free to use an antibacterial spray if you like. If there are any sticky spots, spray them and scrape up the goop. Finally, towel dry the area. As you replace items, give them a quick wipedown, especially if the tops are dusty.

organization situation

If you’re going to be utilizing new storage containers, organizing tools or shelves, get those set up in each area before you begin replacing items. Remember: since we’re focusing on one section at a time, you shouldn’t try to assemble all of the items you’ll be installing at once! Give yourself time to set up each shelf just how you’d like it.

The biggest exception to this rule? If you’re installing an entirely new pantry/closet system! In that case, you probably have no choice but to do it all at once. We recommend having a second pair of hands or a professional installer.

inventory

Remember that pad and pen you grabbed when we first began? Make a grocery list so you can keep your pantry well-stocked and ready for whatever comes next.

On the flip side, take a look at the items you purged. Do you tend to overbuy canned vegetables that you never end up eating? Do you get drawn into cute packaging on bougie little treats? Do you buy a bag of flour every time you’re at the store, whether you need one or not? We all fall into little grocery shopping routines that leave us with pantry items we simply don’t need. It might even be helpful for you to make a DO NOT BUY list for the next time you’re at the store.

after about 6 months:

When is it time to throw out pantry items? For anything unopened, go by the expiration date on the packaging. But once you’ve opened something, it may be hard to know when it’s time to throw it out. This is a rough guide. It’s always important to look for mold, pests or “off” smells, even if something theoretically should still be “good.”

• Baking soda

after a couple years:

• Dried spices

• Sprinkles

• Dry rice and pasta

• Anything with mold anywhere on it

trend: butler's pantry

Realtors are noticing an uptick in the demand for butler’s pantries in homes. And we couldn’t be happier! These multi-functional spaces offer tons of storage on top of customized stations that serve your unique needs. Many people have coffee bars, food prep stations, wine fridges and more in their butler’s pantries.

What’s the difference versus a large, traditional pantry?

Think of a butler’s pantry as an extension of the kitchen rather than just a place to store food. They often have second sinks, extra counter space and/or storage for serveware. With so many “must-have” small appliances on the market, a butler’s pantry is a godsend; the extra storage space frees up your kitchen counters.

trend: hide & seek

If the purpose of a pantry is to declutter your kitchen, then the hidden pantry is a way to declutter the declutter!

More homeowners are designing their pantry doors to be more seamless with the cabinetry in their kitchens, as shown above. Still others utlize pocket doors that save on space and offer a more flush look.

We’ve seen some smart kitchen systems that hide the pantry inside the island! The shelves rise up from the countertop at the push of a button.

For people with little space, specialty drawers, hinged cabinets and sliding shelves can be utilized to add the storage a pantry would provide without changing the home’s floorplan.

trend: found you!

Plenty of homeowners aren’t shy about showing off their pantries. Installing accent doors on pantry spaces has become a fun way to add character to a kitchen. Just imagine an antique French oak door with wrought iron detailing or a door made from salvaged barrel staves.

We’ve also seen a lot of pantries featuring clear or frosted glass doors, or even open archways. This look is best achieved with extremely organized pantries, however!

trend: ladder up

One of the biggest struggles of kitchen storage is needing something from one of the topmost shelves when you’re in the middle of cooking. Rolling library ladders allow you to reach everything without dragging over a chair or stepstool. Plus, they look super cool! •

Down to Earth

Warm neutrals are on trend in all types of home décor, and rugs are no exception. Along with beiges and tans come other toasty earth tones, such as olive green, rust red, clay, soil and sunset gold. If you’re “digging” this earthy trend, it’s best to ensure that warm tones are incorporated throughout your space rather than just in the rug.

Natural Textures

Wool, sisal, seagrass and jute are timeless choices for oversized area rugs. These natural materials offer a lot of texture, but their neutral tones mean they work with just about any décor. Try this trend in dining areas and kitchens! For the truly bold, these rugs are great as an underlay for smaller, more colorful rugs.

RUGS

Taking She

Squiggles, scalloped edges, angled edges and fancy shapes are all the rage right now. Rugs with interesting, unconventional forms can serve a number of purposes in a given space. Rounded edges can add curves to a boxy room, softening the otherwise harsh architecture. Whimsical shapes can add a sense of playfulness. And rooms with unusual shapes may simply need a rug that’s cut to match! Whatever the reason, this is a fun trend that can work in just about any space. We especially love novelty rugs in bathrooms.

Mixed Pile

These rugs take texture to a whole new level – literally! By mixing shorter and longer fibers, mixed pile rugs add tons of visual interest, especially on monochromatic rugs that would otherwise be – pardon the pun – onedimensional. We’re seeing a lot of rugs that use irregular shapes and mixed pile designs, blending the two trends for a completely unique look.

Ge etry Class

We love the geometric patterns we’re seeing on rugs. These big, bold lines add structure to the spaces they’re featured in, drumming up architectural interest in a room that might otherwise be lacking in angles. Geometric patterns can be fairly timeless, so don’t be afraid to invest in this trend!

The Gre Outdos

Don’t forget about your outdoor spaces! Outdoor rugs are being made with more durable materials, making investing in one a smart choice. They come in countless patterns, colors and even textures to bring personality to your deck or porch. A fun mini-trend we’re seeing? People using outdoor rugs indoors – and vice versa!

The Bott Line

Trends come and go. Your approach to your home décor should always be steered by your own taste and lifestyle. Remember: rugs can be an easy way to freshen up a space and bring a little “new” into your routine!

On the flip side, rugs can be a serious investment. If you are spending the big bucks, choose a style that is classic and timeless, made from a durable material such as wool. You can always swap out accessories to bring trends into your rooms.

Either way, our best rug advice? Get them professionally cleaned regularly! Most rugs should be cleaned once every 12-18 months – more often for people with a lot of foot traffic or pets, less often for rugs that are rarely used. Professional rug cleaning will extend the life of your rugs, freshen up your home and can improve your allergies. •

Rugble

This brand turned traditional rugs on their head by creating a machine-washable alternative. You spread a lightweight Ruggable cover over their nonslip rug pad. Whenever you need to clean your Ruggable, you simply peel the rug cover off the pad, throw it in your home washing machine and dryer, then reattach it to the pad. Ruggable rugs are perfect for high-traffic areas or spots where spills or messes are likely to occur, such as dining rooms or homes with pets. What’s the drawback? Ruggable rugs are all low pile; they can’t match the quality and beauty of traditional rugs.

Benefits of Massage

with COREY PROFFITT STUDIOS

When it comes to relaxation, a therapeutic massage is at the top of our list, but there are far more benefits associated with a massage than just melting into the table. At Corey Proffitt Studios Massage, Corey and his team of talented licensed massage therapists are there to provide clients with the best therapeutic massage and bodywork experience through education, communication, and, of course, specialty massage services. “We customize each massage based on what you need that day, so no two visits are ever exactly the same” says owner Corey Proffitt, a Nationally Board Certified Massage Therapist, the highest level of credential in the industry. “We focus on providing the best massage experience along with the best in customer service; a combination for a happier, healthier you!”

While we all know a massage feels nice, we wanted to learn more about the health benefits of massage therapy and bodywork, so we sat down with Corey to discuss his healing process. To become a Kentucky Licensed Massage Therapist, Corey attended massage school at the Lexington Healing Arts Academy, and immediately after graduating, opened his studio where his vision was simple; to help as many people as possible to live without stress and pain. So, how does massage therapy equate to a life without stress and pain?

February 2023 | TOPS 87
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Stress Relief

During a massage, your body’s internal calming response is increased, resulting in a decrease in anxiety, which can last long after your massage is over. In fact, massage therapy can reduce stress hormones like cortisol by as much as 40% in just one session! When we’re stressed, our muscles tighten in response, then relax when the stress is gone, but if we’re constantly stressed, our muscles can stay tense. A Swedish or deep tissue massage can help chronically tense areas by increasing circulation, soothing the nerves, and reducing emotional and physical stress.

Better Sleeping Habits

If you struggle with sleeping soundly, massage therapy has been shown to improve sleep patterns in all types of people, including children, adolescents, and adults that suffer from migraines, insomnia, fibromyalgia, and more. Because stress levels are decreased during a massage, more serotonin is produced which is followed by melatonin, helping us fall asleep easier. A 60-minute massage offers the same benefits as 7-8 hours of sleep, just don’t fall asleep during your session or you’ll miss the relaxation! And, if you’re one of the many people who grind their teeth while sleeping and suffer from TMJ, Corey can provide relief by focusing on the muscles on the head, neck, jaws, and by working in the mouth.

Pain Management

Arthritis and other medical conditions can cause swelling and joint pain, but regular massages can help relieve pain as blood flows to your joints and your body produces endorphins. A Myofascial Release is a massage technique that can eliminate pain and restore range of motion through sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions, or restrictions in the connective tissue of the body. Because all of the connective tissue in your body is connected, relieving pain in one area could result in pain relief in another area!

For muscle pain, a sports massage can prepare your body for physical activity, restore energy, relieve swelling, reduce muscle tension, and increase flexibility, helping to prevent injuries. Whether you’re a training athlete or just someone who exercises daily, a sports massage can quickly and effectively break down the tension and stress put on your muscular system during physical activity.

Ease Pregnancy Symptoms

Similar to a Swedish massage, a prenatal massage helps relax tense muscles, ease aches and pains, improve blood circulation, regulate hormones, and improve labor. Sciatic nerve pain is common in pregnant women, but by releasing the tension on nearby muscles, massage therapy can help inflamed nerves and significantly reduce sciatic nerve pain.

Reflexology can also ease pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum effects by applying pressure to your hands and feet using specific hand techniques to create a physical change in your body. Besides pregnancy symptoms, reflexology has been shown to create changes in areas such as the kidneys, intestines, and the brain.

88 TOPS | February 2023

Boost the Immune System

Regular massages can help your body fight off diseases, both physically and mentally! By increasing circulation and lymphatic flow, massages can help healthy nutrients move throughout your body and white blood cells fight off harmful substances. Corey incorporates aromatherapy into his facial massages for ultimate relaxation, but this also helps your limbic system, which controls your emotions and influences your nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules during aromatherapy, this transmits messages to the limbic system and affects heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system.

If you’re ready for some serious relaxation and improved wellness, you can make your appointment with Corey Proffitt Studios Massage at relaxyoudeserveit.com and 859-421-3085.

AnneGeorgeMargaret

REAL WEDDING
St. Boniface Catholic Church • The Henry Clay // Story by Allyson
Mattingly

As two Kentucky Wildcats fans, it’s fitting that Anne Margaret Cowley and George Connors met watching a UK vs. Tennessee football game. Though Kentucky lost that day, Anne Margaret and George won, not spending a day apart since. Anne Margaret was born and raised in Lexington and after graduating from the University of Kentucky, moved to Louisville for work, while George transferred to Kentucky from Arlington, Virginia to follow in his dad’s footsteps attending Centre College. It just so happened that while at Saints, a bar in Louisville, with two different groups, Anne Margaret and George had mutual friends who introduced the couple. Luckily, Kentucky later redeemed themselves at the couple’s wedding, beating Florida in football during the reception.

The bride doesn’t qualify herself as a decorator, but with some help from family, Anne Margaret and George had a classic, beautiful ceremony and reception. The ceremony was held at St. Boniface Catholic Church, which is the oldest Catholic Church in Louisville, and the reception at The Henry Clay. “My aunt and godmother, Elaine, is the queen of decor and has orchestrated her 5 daughters’ weddings on their property in Springfield, Kentucky” said Anne Margaret. “Ceremony decor was pretty minimal, and consisted of white flowers and greenery that Elaine and my other aunts arranged.” George also got a chance to show his creative side, making signs for the Country Boy mobile bar provided by the caterer.

The reception was full of fun, with George surprising Anne Margaret by drumming with the band, Power 2 Party. “Our band did not disappoint! My mother and I didn’t leave the dance floor until we had to.” The couple even had an afterparty hosted by their friend Brack Turner at the Local Seltzery in NULU where they celebrated until the early morning.

Rachel Clay

REAL WEDDING
Glengary Estate // Story by Allyson Mattingly

As they stood under the handmade arch adorned with fresh flowers, high school sweethearts Rachel and Clay finally said “I do.” After moving from London, Kentucky to Kingsport, Tennessee, Rachel met her future husband when they were just 15 and 16. Flash forward to last October, when the couple said their vows at Glengary Estate, the perfect spot for the Evans’ traditional, yet unique, Kentucky wedding. To achieve their reception’s “elegantly rustic” look, the bride chose navy and olive green as her colors, accented by white floral arrangements of varying sizes and heights, and wood elements like the tree stump used to display the four-tiered cake. Rachel’s dad even got involved, designing and constructing the stunning arch Rachel and Clay were married under.

Guests got a good laugh seeing the Maid of Honor walk down the aisle with Maddie, the bride’s family’s miniature schnauzer, dressed for the occasion in her floral collar. “My favorite moment was being able to stand up there and look around and see all of the people that have loved and supported us for our entire lives,” says Clay. “It was so special that so many of them had traveled from near and far to be there to celebrate with us.”

At an exciting reception where the couple and their guests danced the night away while cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats as they beat Florida in football, Rachel and Clay said the only thing they wished had been different was the night ending. “Our wedding planner literally had to pull us off the dance floor to make our getaway!”

Why You Should Hire a Wedding Planner?

After years and years of envisioning your dream wedding day you finally said, “Yes!” to your number one man and it’s time to actually plan this thing. You’re probably wondering where to even begin. You’re asking yourself, “What do I do first?”, “When do we want to get married?”, “How am I going to get everything done?” This is where a Wedding Planner comes in.

If you’re imagining J.Lo with her perfectly sleek pony in The Wedding Planner movie, it is possible to have your very own fabulous ceremony on the big day right here in Central Kentucky!

So, what does a Wedding Planner actually provide? From partial planning to full service, they all have one thing in common; becoming your partner-in-crime during the entire planning process. If you decide to hire a Wedding Planner, here are some of the services they can offer to make your wedding journey as stress-free as possible:

Vendor Search/Recommendations

If you’re at the beginning of your planning and need help researching different vendors before booking, having a planner is the perfect resource. Most wedding planners will have a “preferred vendor” list of vendors they’ve previously worked with and enjoy working with. They can provide you with a suggested list based on your vision, style and budget which can help narrow down your search from the start!

Venue Walk-Through

Once you’ve decided on a venue, a Wedding Planner can do an actual walkthrough with you to help plan overall venue layout, reception floor plans and guest flow for your wedding. Having a game plan of how your guests will move from ceremony to cocktail hour and into reception will help create a seamless event for everyone!

Floral Planning/Vision Assistance

If you’re still searching for a florist, a Wedding Planner can help you create a floral plan and “vision” for your big day. This pulls all of your ideas into one cohesive plan that you can then take to different florists for quotes and opinions! They are, of course, the pros, and can offer suggestions on how to bring that vision to life while also staying within budget.

Overall Wedding Design

Your pinterest board is probably jam packed with all the gorgeous inspiration you have for your wedding decor. Sometimes it’s hard to bring those ideas to life for your own wedding. Questions like, “where can I rent that chair?”. “What color tablecloth should I do?”, “How should I decorate my ceremony welcome table?” all come to mind. These are the details a Wedding Planner can help compile for you into one cohesive design plan so that your wedding turns out just the way you envisioned it, and maybe better!

Wedding Timeline Creation

A huge bonus to having a Wedding Planner is having help creating your overall timeline for the big day. Basically from start to finish there will be a plan for all of your vendors to keep track of so that nothing falls through the cracks. Deadlines are necessary for makeup and hair completion, ceremony start time, reception entrance, cake-cutting time, etc.

Vendor Communication

Does communicating with all of your vendors, keeping track of contracts, payment deadlines and meetings overwhelm you? Then a Wedding Planner is just what you need! A planner can be your main source of communication between you and your vendors so that you don’t have to stress about the small details and logistics of your wedding day. All you need to do is focus on the fun!

Budget Creation/Guidance

A wedding budget. One of the more stressful issues in planning a wedding. If you’re having trouble deciding on an overall budget and how much should go where, then having a Wedding Planner will help ease this process as they will know average costs and ways to save and plan for your main priorities.

Wedding Rehearsal and Day of Coordination

One of the biggest perks of having a Wedding Planner is that they are also your “day-of” coordinator. You get to wake up on your wedding day and not have to worry about anything other than enjoying every second and living in the moment. A Planner will keep your timeline on track, along with your other vendors and make sure your wedding day goes off without a hitch!

Decor Setup and Breakdown

A lot of wedding planners will assist in decor setup and breakdown if that’s something that is not provided by your venue or food vendor. This is a huge help in making sure your vision comes to life on the big day. Sign placement, table decor, etc. can all be taken care of by your planner and allow your Mom or Aunt Judy enjoy the day right by your side!

REAL

It’s funny how falling in love works sometimes” laughs newly married couple Cesalee and Javin Hamilton. Though they grew up in two small towns just minutes from each other where everyone seemingly knew everyone, Cesalee and Javin had never seen or heard of the other before the day they met.

When the couple was searching for their perfect venue, they wanted something indoor, formal, elegant, and bright. Luckily, the first place they toured marked all those boxes. Cesalee and Javin chose The Galerie in Versailles, Kentucky to host both their ceremony and reception, and had the day of their dreams.

As the bride walked down the aisle, she passed large floral arrangements lined on both sides, with gorgeous navy and sky blue flowers. Cesalee paid homage to her mother who passed away in 2002 of Lupus by wearing the same floral pin as her mother on her wedding day, and had her photo seated in the front row.

Later at the reception, the couple used those same floral arrangements to decorate the tables, giving an elegant, soft feel with white linens draping the tables, chairs, and walls.

Though the couple loved living it up at their reception with friends and family, their first look was by far their favorite part of the day. “It was such an emotional and happy moment” smiles Cesalee. “We wouldn’t change a thing, it was just as we dreamed!”

The Clerestory at Greyline Station // Story by Allyson Mattingly

Though Cassidy and Zach both grew up in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, they didn’t meet until after high school, when mutual friends introduced the couple. Now, almost 8 years later, Cassidy and Zach enjoy discovering all Kentucky has to offer, and never get bored with all the fun things to do together.

Kentucky may be home, but the couple also loves traveling, especially to New York City. “The Clerestory instantly reminded us of a place we would see in NYC” says Cassidy. “We knew it was the venue for us the first time we toured it.” With The Clerestory’s concrete floors and giant windows, the couple utilized a minimalist approach for decor to emphasize the industrial and modern vibe of their venue.

Adding white pillar candles, neutral florals and linens with pops of peach and terracotta, and a giant area rug as the dance floor created an intimate ambiance perfect for a modern wedding.

Recounting their favorite moments from the day, Cassidy and Zach enjoyed having a moment alone when taking photos at Old North Bar. “Taking pictures with our family and bridal party was also filled with laughter and was a time to relax and we felt so comfortable, thanks to our wonderful photographers and videographer!” The couple also incorporated their dog, Miley, into the wedding with cocktail stir sticks made with her face on them, and, of course, they were a huge hit!

For other couples planning their weddings, Cassidy and Zach recommend staying true to what you want your wedding day to be like. “It’s easy to get caught up in what’s trendy and pleasing everyone else, but at the end of the day, it’s about you and your spouse coming together as one.”

In an intimate setting at the Apiary, Alison and Daniel Boswell tied the knot surrounded by friends and family. “It was the first venue we toured and it was a perfect match for what we were looking for in just about every aspect” says Alison. “The setting is naturally beautiful and the food is amazing; there is not much you have to add to make the perfect wedding day at the Apiary.”

Of course, every perfect day is accompanied by a bit of chaos! On the morning of their wedding, Alison and Daniel went separately to pharmacies to get COVID tests before their honeymoon, and when the day came and went without any emails, they called their pharmacies, who informed them that their computer systems were down. While

Alison’s pharmacy allowed a friend to pick up her negative results, Daniel’s pharmacy was not so accommodating. “So, if you were near the Walgreens on Leestown Road around 7:30 on June 17th, Daniel would like to apologize for any erratic driving or shouting that may have been heard,” laughs Alison.

This chaos didn’t take away from Alison and Daniel’s perfect day, though. At the couple’s first look, they took a moment alone to read their vows to one another, helping to calm any nerves. After being married in a comfortable ceremony by a close friend, Alison and Daniel danced the night away with loved ones.

“Dancing and celebrating with so many family and friends in one space was a core memory for both of us” says Alison. “Many times during our reception we saw our grandparents dancing with our friends they had never met before and it was such a warm feeling to be surrounded by everyone we love.”

Selecting the diamond that is right for you... you...

Everyone is familiar with the “four Cs” of diamonds: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat. While the carat weight of diamonds is perhaps the most famous – and most obvious – it’s the other three that confuse customers the most. All four of the “Cs” affect a diamond’s value and price. The diamond industry grades every diamond in each of these four categories based on guidelines set by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). So what should you know about these four diamond qualities?

(Lack of) Color

Diamonds are meant to be colorless (with the exception of fancy, vibrantly-hued diamonds, such as a canary diamond.) A structurally perfect diamond has perfect absence of any hue. The GIA’s D-to-Z diamond color grading system measures a diamond’s degree of colorlessness. Any tinge to the diamond’s color affects the overall vibrancy and sparkle.

A Cut Above

People often use “cut” interchangeably with “shape” when referring to diamonds. Generally, when considering the value of the diamond, its shape – round, oval, pear, emerald or princess, for example – factors in less than its cut. The cut in this case refers specifically to the way a master craftsman has cut and polished the diamond to maximize its sparkle. Each unique shape has a recommended number of facets, and that plays a role in determining whether the cut is ideal or not. But in grading the cut, experts also take a look at factors such as the depth, table size, symmetry, polish and facet length. A poorly-cut diamond will usually have much less sparkle and brightness than one that is rated as Very Good or Excellent.

I Can See Clearly Now

As a naturally-occurring stone, almost every diamond contains some small imperfections, which are referred to

as inclusions. The number and visibility of these inclusions determine how the clarity of a diamond is graded.

How Do They Play Together?

Diamond artisans typically look at a rough stone and allow that to determine how it will be cut. An Ideal cut might be altered to mask some inclusions or to change the way light flows through a stone with a less-than-perfect color grade. They do all of this while creating a stone that yields the largest, most valuable diamond possible.

When purchasing a diamond, your jeweler will work with your budget to find the perfect balance of the Four Cs. Your jeweler may recommend, for example, sacrificing a little color in order to get a cut that offers more fire. Or they may suggest a ring with slightly lower clarity in order to get the carat weight you desire in a more ideal cut. It’s all a balancing act!

Does the Setting Matter?

Aside from the aesthetics of the ring, the setting can greatly alter the appearance of your diamond!

Solitare settings are the most traditional; they’re classic for a reason! This timeless look works for everyone, and it can be dressed up or down with wedding or anniversary bands. A three-stone setting – often representing your past, present and future together – can enhance the center stone’s brilliance or even make it appear to have a more unusual

shape. A halo setting will make your center stone appear larger or help fancy colored diamond center stones “pop.” Rings that set the diamonds up high can appear more sparkly and visually impactful while rings that set the stone lower can be more comfortable to wear and do more to protect the stone’s edges.

White gold or platinum can “cool” down a warm diamond while yellow or rose gold gives the entire ring a warmer look. The band size even comes into play. A thin band will make a smaller center stone appear larger. A thicker band, however, will add gravitas to the entire ring; it brings its own sparkle to the party!

Why Shop In-Person?

No matter how much you educate yourself on the Four Cs, it’s still important to speak to a jewelry expert when selecting your diamond. Our years of experience and expertise allows us to help you choose the absolutely ideal balance of Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat weight for your budget. The differences in each grade may sound minor in theory, but it’s vital to see the stones in-person to get a sense of what the grades truly mean for your diamond. You’ll really be surprised at how much of a difference it makes!

VENDOR BOOKING TIPS:

After getting engaged and securing your wedding date with your venue, the next task is researching vendors.

Vendors tend to be booking dates far ahead into the following year, so contacting for availability and quotes 10-12 months out is ideal.

It’s best to narrow down your favorites to at least 3 options to hopefully find one available for your wedding date!

If you’re thinking, “where do I even begin?” you can lean on your venue to start as they typically will have a preferred vendor list they can supply you to lead you in the right direction!

Important Questions to Ask:

• Are you available for my date?

• What is your pricing for the year of my date?

• What do you require to book and reserve my date?

• Could you send me a standard contract to review prior to booking?

DATE NIGHT Dinners

Ifyou can go out to dinner on date night, you should; if nothing else, it eliminates the awkwardness of deciding who has to clean up. But if you want to make any regular weeknight a special occasion for your sweetie, these recipes can help you turn your home into the most exclusive spot in town. So put on some tunes, uncork the wine and savor the magic of a DIY date night...

RECIPES

Pasta CARBONARA

Is there anything more perfect for a date night than pasta? If you’ve seen Lady and the Tramp, you get it. Carbonara proves that you can have a little of that movie magic without even cracking a sweat.

Guanciale or pancetta would be the most authentic choices for carbonara, but regular American bacon would do in a pinch.

INGREDIENTS:

1 package linguine

6 strips bacon, chopped or

4 oz. pancetta or guanciale, chopped

1 c. fresh peas (optional)

2 T lemon juice

1 1/2 tsp. lemon zest

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

2 T fresh parsley, minced

1/2 c. grated Parmesan cheese

Cook pasta according to package directions in a large saucepan. Drain pasta and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.

Cook bacon or pancetta until crisp in the same saucepan. Add peas, if desired, and cook until heated through.

Add pasta and toss to combine. Stir in lemon juice, zest, eggs, parsley and grated cheese. Pour in enough reserve pasta water to reach desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste. (adapted from Taste of Home)

Note: you can use spaghetti for this recipe, but we promise linguine will just feel fancier.

To get this restaurant-quality look, use a pair of tongs to begin twirling your pasta. Use a large spoon to help shape it and transfer to your plate. Pick out a few pieces of bacon, pancetta or guanciale to add to the dish. Top with freshly grated Parmesan and cracked pepper.

This dish will give your sweetie all of the date night out vibes. But it’s deceptively easy to achieve this French classic at home! Serve it with a glass of red wine and your favorite potato dish – pommes frites certainly wouldn’t be out of line, as shown here!

INGREDIENTS:

4 tenderloin or filet steaks, 6-8 oz. each (about 1 1/2” thick)

Kosher salt

2 T whole peppercorns

1 T butter

1 tsp. olive oil

2 sprigs thyme

1/3 c. Cognac

1 c. heavy cream

Steak AU POIVRE

Remove the steaks from the refrigerator 1 hour prior to cooking. Sprinkle all sides with salt, and allow to set at room temperature.

In a mortar and pestle, coarsely crush the peppercorns. Pour onto a plate. Press the steaks into the pepper, coating the top and bottom. Set aside. In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil, until shimmering. Gently place the steaks in the pan. Add the thyme sprigs. Cook 4 minutes on each side, careful not to break the peppercorn crust. If steaks have not reached the correct temperature inside, transfer to the oven and cook until the correct internal temperature is reached. Set steaks aside and pour off all but 1 T of liquid from pan, discarding thyme. Add Cognac to the pan and carefully ignite with a long match. Gently shake the pan until the flames are extinguished.

Return to medium heat; add cream and scrape the bottom slightly. Bring to a boil and whisk until the sauce coats the back of a spoon. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon the sauce over the steaks and serve. (adapted from Food Network)

Notes: If lighting the Cognac scares you, simply cook the Cognac alone until the raw alcohol smell has burned off, then add the cream.

Classic MUSHROOM RISOTTO

The best date night dishes encourage you to get a little messy together in the kitchen. Risotto requires continual stirring, so this is a great dish to tag team with your partner. This is a recipe that asks for a lot of patience; budget around an hour, start to finish.

INGREDIENTS:

6 c. chicken broth

olive oil

2 lb. mushrooms, thinly sliced

2 shallots, diced

1 1/2 c. Arborio rice

1/2 c. dry white wine

4 T butter

2 T chopped chives

In a pot over low heat, warm broth.

In a large saucepan, heat 2 T olive oil over medium heat. Add mushrooms, and cook until soft. Remove to a bowl.

Add 1 T olive oil to saucepan and warm. Stir in shallots and cook for 1 minute. Add rice, stirring continuously, until rice is coated with oil and slightly golden in color and translucent around the edges, about 2 minutes. Pour in wine and stir until fully absorbed.

Add 1/2 c. warm broth to the rice, stirring constantly until absorbed. Continue adding broth, 1/2 c. at a time, stirring every thirty seconds or so until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is al dente. The risotto shouldn’t be dry when finished, but rather creamy and loose.

Stir in mushrooms, butter and chives. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper to taste. Grate Parmesan cheese over the top and serve immediately. (adapted from All Recipes)

Notes: shiitake, portabella, porcini and white button mushrooms will work best here; use any combination of mushrooms you prefer, but we suggest using at least two. If you only have dried mushrooms, soften them in hot water for about fifteen minutes before adding them.

FLATBREAD PIZZA

This is another recipe that encourages you to have fun together in the kitchen. The toppings are totally up to you; if you’re using any raw meats, cook those thoroughly first.

INGREDIENTS:

1 tsp. active dry yeast

1 tsp. granulated sugar

3/4 c. warm water

2 c. all-purpose flour

1 T olive oil

1 tsp. salt

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, add yeast, sugar and warm water. Whisk gently, then cover with a towel and let sit 5 minutes or until the mixture is frothy.

Turn stand mixer to low speed. Add the flour slowly. Drizzle in the olive oil and add salt, beating 1 minute until combined into a thick, shaggy dough.

Transfer to a lightly floured work surface. Knead 2 minutes until it comes together and becomes smooth; if dough is too sticky, add 1-2 T flour.

Spray a glass bowl with cooking spray; place the dough in the prepared bowl and cover with a towel. Allow to sit 45 minutes at room temperature until it begins to rise.

Preheat oven to 475°F with pizza stone inside.

Punch the dough down to release air. Divide into two even balls. On a lightly floured work surface, begin stretching and shaping each dough ball until it is 1/4” thick. Transfer to a sheet of parchment paper. Poke the surface with your fingers (will resemble focaccia). Prick evenly using a fork. Drizzle with 1/2 T olive oil. Top with your favorite toppings.

Bake 15-20 minutes directly on top of pizza stone until crust and toppings are browned to your liking. Slice and serve. (adapted from Sally’s Baking)

Set for Success

Imagine knowing you were going to be playing the same spot where the national player of the year had played for four seasons and had just led her team to the school’s first national championship.

Yet that is what setter Emma Grome had facing her when she got to Kentucky two years ago. She was from southern Ohio and knew plenty about what All-American Madison Lilley had done, including being a huge part of the 2020 national championship team. “It was definitely tough but I knew what I was getting into,” said Grome.

Coach Craig Skinner recalled that Grome actually gave her verbal commitment to UK before the Cats became the first Southeastern Conference team ever to win a volleyball national championship in the COVID-delayed season.

“At the time, she said she wanted to come and help Kentucky win its first national championship. She already had that on her mind,” Skinner said. “I loved that confidence and the conviction that she said it with.”

“Her high school team won three state championships in a row. She just stands out. Her club coach told me I should take a look at her in Orlando and I just kept wanting to go back and watch more because of the way she competed. She is all about the team and making people around her better.”

However, Grome is also a special talent. She was the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2021 — only the fifth UK player ever to earn that honor. She was the SEC Player of the Year in 2022 — the fifth straight year a UK player earned the award — when she had 1,282 assists in 30 matches along with 229 digs, 44 kills and 34 service aces.

“It’s hard to project what a player will end up doing but I knew for sure she was an elite athlete and that she also craved the game of volleyball. She had all the tools and you knew she would put in the time,” Skinner said. “These players know about people in the past who played their position and what they are getting into. She wanted that challenge.”

Skinner never quit pushing Lilley, a three-time All-American, to enhance her skills during her UK career. He wants more from Grome, too. He’s talked to her about improving her decision making and becoming more deceptive. “It’s hard to see where blockers are when your back is to them or your are perpendicular to them but she can learn to sneak a peek and see where they are. She needs to be more of a scorer with her serve,” Skinner said. “She wants to get better. People have been telling her for her entire life that she is too small or not tall enough. She has a chip on her shoulder to prove people wrong.”

Skinner said she did not have the best tryout with USA Volleyball last year but has let him know she wants to go back and “represent” UK the right way. “If she was not that competitive, she wouldn’t be able to do what she does,” the UK coach said. However, she knows how to have fun and even came up with a unique marketing idea to promote volleyball during the season.

Grome and sophomore Erin Lamb did their own version of “Carpool Karaoke” — a recurring segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden — from a golf cart riding around campus before some matches.

“It was just a spur of the moment idea. We would take people to class or the dorm or wherever they wanted to go as long as they would sing with us. It was a great way to promote our games,” Grome said.

BE THE BEAT - Learn Hands-Only CPR

During February – American Heart Month – the American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives for all, is urging at least one person in every household to “Be the Beat” by committing to learning Hands-Only CPR. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of the death in both Kentucky and the United States. According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States each year. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival – which is key since about 90% of people who suffer outof-hospital cardiac arrests die, and about 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home.

“If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of a loved one, whether it be a spouse, a parent, grandparent, child or a friend,” said Andrea Ooten, Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Central and Eastern Kentucky. “You don’t have to be CPR-certified to save a life, which is why we are calling on all Kentuckians to be prepared for a cardiac emergency by learning the two easy steps to perform Hands-Only CPR.”

Hands-Only CPR, or CPR without breaths, is quick and simple to learn and can be performed on teenagers and adults by any friend, family member, or bystander. Step 1: Call 911; and step 2: push hard and fast in the center of the chest to a beat of 100-120 beats per minute. Hesitancy to perform CPR is often due to a perceived lack of training or knowledge. Approximately 3 in 10 people are unfamiliar with the Good Samaritan Laws that exist to protect those acting in good faith, are concerned with hurting someone, and/or afraid of legal consequences.

2023 Central Kentucky HEART BALL

Near the end of the month on February 24, the Association will celebrate its successes during the 2023 Central Kentucky Heart Ball, an annual gala held at the Central Bank Center in Lexington, that will showcase the year-round efforts of the Heart of Central Kentucky campaign. 2023 Heart Ball Chair Couple, Brett and Billie Jo Setzer with Setzer Properties are committed to advancing the Association’s mission of being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.

“After supporting the American Heart Association for several years, we are honored to chair the Heart Ball campaign in 2023,” the Setzers said. “Heart disease impacts so many people, including our friends and family members. By supporting the Heart Ball, we hope to save lives through the Association’s research and local community outreach.”

Be the Beat

The Heart of Central Kentucky campaign and Central Kentucky Heart Ball support the Association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal by uniting community leaders to invest and make an impact in improving CPR education, nutrition security, and more, to promote equal health opportunities and outcomes for every person in Central and Eastern Kentucky. During the Heart Ball, Eastern Kentucky University Football Head Coach Walt Wells, recent cardiac arrest survivor who was saved by CPR, will also be honored.

“Coach Wells’ story is one that showcases the importance of Hands-Only CPR and having a cardiac emergency response plan in place,” the Setzers said. “Because of the many people who jumped into quick action when they did and knew the lifesaving skill of CPR, Coach Wells will be able to join us at this year’s Heart Ball event.”
