Husband & Wife Design Duo DISCUSS EDGEWOOD COUNTRY ESTATE

You might consider Gretchen and Jason Black, owner of Artisan Signature Homes, as one of those TV design couples; their home renovation videos display the process of remodeling the ornate Edgewood Estate in Glenview. The home, built in the 1800s, received a magnificently modern makeover by the husband and wife design duo, and now the couple is looking back at the home they lived in and loved. dgewood was listed on the market for just under $3M in 2017, where former Bellarmine President Joseph McGowan lived for 20 years. According to a Louisville Business First article, the Italianate home was donated to Bellarmine in 1997 by now-retired heart surgeon Dr. Allan Lansing and his wife, Donna; it’s been used to host Derby parties, events for the university, and other local shindigs for decades. When the Black family took over in 2018, they knew bringing it into the 21st Century was going to be a tough task. They began a Youtube channel, “Building a Better South,” to document the eight-month process. “Gretchen and I have always built and designed new homes, so we wanted to put our touch on a historic home,” Jason says. In 1850, the home wasn’t designed for how busy families currently live, says Jason, so they focused their efforts on the kitchen and main living area, opening it up so they had

the functionality of a family room. The outside of the home was revamped to its classic state with touches from the couple including Chippendale railing around the front porch, and 10-foot-tall white doors to adhere to other historic details and welcome visitors into the 5-bedroom, 5-fullbath, 2-half-bath, 8,000-plus-square-foothome. Inside, a local artist hand-painted a mural of Gretchen’s favorite flowers in

the entryway, leading up to the original banister the couple refi nished with brass details. The formal 16-seat dining room was split into two, book-ending a bright, white and navy sitting room with an 80inch hidden television for family movie nights. Upgraded fi replaces with a clean, white marble surround bring warmth to the main living area.

Jason and Gretchen deciddecid ed on a crisp navy “decorative and clean” aesthetic with five countertop-to-ceiling windows and nearby access to a 15-footby-40-foot screened porch. raveling upstairs, the couple decided to remove a long access hallway, with a staircase beginning in the kitchen, to create an owner’s suite that includes a bath lit by the natural brightness of windows, a dressing room, and closet space. The owner’s bedroom was originally too large for the couple, who like a cozier feel, so they cut the size in half and created an intricatelytrimmed wall with a secret door to the master bath with a larger-format marble heated floor. The third floor once held three bedrooms, but the couple ultimately decided to remove two bedrooms, creating a more intimate space.

dgewood has a similar style throughout, which Gretchen humorously calls “granny chic.” Oak flooring was installed throughout with an interior design using various shades of blue. Custom panels line the home, creating a “timeless” look that “made it feel authentic to the time,” says Jason about the home’s history. Gretchen and Jason Black enjoyed the eight-month process it took to remodel the home. “We made the house feel like home,” Jason says. A Southern Cook's Top

Pantry Staples by Allyson Mattingly

BBQ Sauce If there's one thing Kentuckians know, it's barbeque. A perfectly tangy BBQ sauce helps take your 'cue to the next level and leaves your guests with a finger-lickin' experience. You can purchase delicious BBQ sauces at local businesses around Lexington, like Red State BBQ, The Mousetrap, and J Render's Southern Table & Bar. If you would rather make your own BBQ sauce like a true southern belle, try making a traditional Western Kentucky mutton barbeque sauce. Being from Western Kentucky, mutton is a staple of barbeque. If you haven't tried it, I promise you're missing out.

Spices Though you don't need to stock your spice cabinet with every seasoning known to man, you do need a few basics to spice things up. We recommend going with what you like first and foremost - don't like cumin? Don't use it! Starting with the basics – garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper

flakes, dried herbs, chili powder – allows you to figure out what you like and how to use spices in different recipes. You can even make your own specialty mixture once you figure out what you like to use on poultry, seafood, or red meat.

Pecans Because you never know when you're going to have to whip up a pecan pie for unexpected guests! My family has a pecan pie (actually a few) at every holiday, as I'm sure most families in the south do. Pecans are sweet and buttery, making them a perfect option for desserts - yes, desserts is plural! From turtles to shortbread, brownies to Puppy Chow, pecans belong on your table all year long.

Buttermilk To call buttermilk an essential for southern cooking is an understatement. Use the carton that's been sitting in your fridge to make buttermilk waffles for the family, fried okra,

louisville homes & gardens | february 2022 17

ranch dressing, or chicken and dumplings. Of course, we couldn't forget about every southerner's favorites. Mix your buttermilk with your cornmeal, plus a few extra ingredients, and get some lip-smacking fried chicken or dangerously good cornbread. And the best, of course, would be buttermilk biscuits!

Tony Chachere's Southerners fear no seasoning. The more flavor, the better! Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning will leave you wanting to add a dash to any and everything. Trust me; my dad uses it on almost every dish. This classic seasoning enhances the flavor of meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables, eggs, barbeque, french fries, and more. You'll feel like an authentic Louisianian when you're using this stuff. For people who enjoy a little more spice, there is also Tony Chachere's BOLD Creole Seasoning, which is sure to light your taste buds up.

Tea Bags Tea bags are an absolute must in a southern pantry. A glass of ice-cold sweet tea on a warm day always hits the spot if it doesn't, you're clearly not a true southerner! A good southern sweet tea is similar to classic iced tea, with just a little bit more sugar. (Okay, a lot more sugar, but we don't judge.) All you have to do to make this classic is steep the tea bags for a couple of minutes and add sugar – though simple syrup and a pinch of baking soda is a magic touch. If that's not sweet enough for you, add lemonade to make a refreshing Arnold Palmer.

Bourbon If you live in Kentucky, you know you have to have at least one bottle of bourbon in your home at all times! Place a bottle of Kentucky's native spirit on your shelf for a nightcap, or use it in your favorite recipes. Add it to your mamaw's pecan pie recipe for an extra bit of kick, or make a Kentucky classic like bourbon balls! If you prefer to sip your bourbon, a hot toddy is the way to go: bourbon, water, lemon juice, and honey are all you need.

Olive Oil A good olive oil allows you to make even the most uninteresting foods sing. The various health benefits associated with olive oil, including healthy monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties, make it a great option to use in almost all of your dishes. It's basically liquid gold, so go in with a healthy drizzle! From simple sauces to desserts, you can use olive oil to make a classic vinaigrette, basil pesto, marinated manchego, roasted cherry tomato Caprese, or even the best olive oil cake ever. Of course, you can also use it to make an easy, 18 louisville homes & gardens | february 2022

delicious bread dipping oil that will be your go-to with your freshly made focaccia bread.

Chicken Stock Much like olive oil, chicken stock is basically liquid gold. The versatility of chicken stock makes it perfect to use in many recipes, like a base for chicken noodle soup, a flavor intensifier for rice, braising meat, and much more! If you're looking for a quick and easy option, store-bought is fine. But if you're ready to take on the task, homemade broth tastes even better, and you can control the salt and flavoring. With some leftover chicken, a couple of vegetables, and tasty seasoning, you can whip up a delicious chicken broth in no time. Place some in the freezer for long-term storage and take it out in a couple of months when you're craving a hearty soup or stew.

Bread We recommend always having some kind of artisan loaf on hand, whether it be brioche, ciabatta, focaccia, or a classic sourdough. This is the jumping-off point for delicious dinners, fancy appetizers and tasty sandwiches. If you want to take it one step further, bake your own loaf. Your guests will be happy you chose to go the extra mile for quality ingredients.

Canned Tomatoes If you grew up canning tomatoes as a "fun bonding" activity with your family, you know that it's a long process, but the result is delicious tomatoes months down the road. Whether you like them whole, crushed, diced, or as a paste, tomatoes can be used in all kinds of recipes. Some of our favorites include a comforting tomato soup (with a grilled cheese, of course), a traditional Bolognese for your next pasta and wine night, hearty chili for those brisk winter months, or fresh huevos rancheros for your brunch get-togethers.

Hawaiian Rolls You always need a good roll at southern gatherings, and Hawaiian rolls are a fan favorite with their fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth flavor. One of my favorite ways to indulge in this sweet bread is serving it stuffed with ham, melted cheese, and topped with poppy seeds. They make great sliders. Smoke some pork, lather it with BBQ sauce, and you'll have a delicious, easy pork mini sandwich. No matter how you use them, just know you better buy extra because it's hard not to eat these things right out of the package! Not into the sweet side of things? Sister Schubert rolls are the other secret of southern cooks.

Cheese If your guilty pleasure is eating cheese straight out of the packaging as a late-night snack, we're in the same boat. But it's a southern hospitality staple. When unexpected guests drop-in, you'll want to have something on hand to make a spontaneous snack spread. We recommend keeping the basics; a sharp cheddar, brie, feta, and mozzarella. This also ensures that you always have something perfect to pair with your nightly glass of wine!

Rice Almost no meal is complete without a side of rice. Some people might think that a rice-based dish equates to heavy and dense, but that's far from the truth - you can make a beautiful, light and tasty dish with various kinds of rice. It's sometimes difficult to know what type to use. Long-grain rice ends up light and fluffy, while short-grain rice is almost

round and tends to stick together when cooked. Brown rice is tan, has a somewhat chewy texture and a nutlike flavor. It also has more nutrients than white rice! White rice is still nutritious and goes well with many dishes, like a zucchini rice gratin, cheesy broccoli and rice casserole, or a creamy risotto.

Cast iron skillet You're going to need a way to cook all of your favorite recipes, and a cast iron skillet is the perfect way to do so. They're inexpensive, virtually indestructible, versatile, and stay seasoned to give you even more flavor when cooking. If you're lucky, someone in your family will have one to pass down to you so you can get to cooking delicious cornbread, steak, or bacon. We recommend checking out Lodge Cast Iron, where you can even take a short quiz to determine which cast iron cookware is right for you. • louisville homes & gardens | february 2022 19

Vacation! Tips for planning your spring/summer 2022 trips with confidence... by Amanda Harper

20 louisville homes & gardens | february 2022

While we were all probably hoping for a little more certainty in 2022, it still feels like a lot of our travel plans are up in the air. If you’re planning a spring or summer vacation, here are some tips to help make the entire process as smooth and worry-free as possible.

Make Use of Credits

If you have airline ticket credits from canceled flights in 2020, many expire this year. Make sure to check the expiration deadline. Some travelers who originally had international plans are sticking to domestic flights only, which may result in a partial refund or additional airline vouchers; you’ll have to check with your airline for exact details. However, most airlines are not fully refunding these credits – and many won’t allow transferring the tickets to another person – so use ‘em or lose ‘em.

Do Your Research

It’s more important than ever to get Googling if you want to take a trip. Look into the current situation in your destination and whether your hotel and transportation offers flexible cancellation policies. Some travel destinations are now requiring special insurance or proof of vaccination, as well. Arm yourself with as much information as you can before you commit. On the flip side, a little digging might turn up some great deals on certain locales!

Check Your Passport

When’s the last time you looked at your passport? Many, many travelers are realizing too late that their passports have expired. You also want to make sure your passport, ID and travel ticket names are an exact match. Making a copy of the photo page of your passport isn’t a bad idea, either: if your passport gets lost, having a copy can make the replacement process so much smoother.

Trust a Professional

Many people skip consulting travel agents or advisors, but this year especially, it may be more beneficial than ever before to trust your travel plans to a professional. These experts are staying upto-the-minute on travel advisories, restrictions and deals, and will best understand exactly when you need to book each leg of your adventure.

Treat Yourself

We’re all in need of a little self-care. Consider your options to upgrade your experience. Whether it’s a nicer seat on the plane or a spa package you would’ve previously skipped, be sure to give yourself a little pampering this year. You won’t regret a moderate splurge.

Get Going

Rather than one big trip, many people are opting for multiple shorter trips, like weekend getaways or staycations. Others are choosing locations that offer lots of outdoor activities, making the entire journey less likely to be impacted by changing travel restrictions. However you choose to pursue your joy this year, get going!

According to travel experts... demand for travel in 2022 is going to be higher than ever. Book early, and consider outof-the-way destinations that won't be as crowded. You'll benefit from lower travel fares and a lot more fun!

Is a group trip right for you?

Since so many of us are itching for a trip, but also for quality time with our favorite people. A group trip might seem like the obvious solution for these two desires. But is it right for you and your crew? We weigh the pros and cons below to help you decide, whether you’re thinking of a fun girls’ weekend or a big family vacay!

Pro:

The most obvious reason why a group trip is a great choice is that you get to share a magical, memorable experience with your loved ones. Having the opportunity to connect in this way to your family, friends or even colleagues is absolutely priceless. With Covid still looming, traveling with your own crew can make it easier to limit your contact with other people. Just be sure to make rules about what level of exposure you’re all comfortable with in your time apart during the trip! Traveling in a group can mean huge cost savings. If you share a single space, the price breakdown often beats individual hotel fare. Many modes of travel offer companion pricing while certain venues will offer group

22 louisville homes & gardens | february 2022

rates if your cohort is large enough. On top of that, you can split costs of food and more!

Con:

For every person you add to the party, you’re adding a new personality and different interests. The wrong mix can put a real damper on everyone’s fun. Clashing personalities, strained relationships, naysayers… it’s always a mixed bag. If this is a concern for you, be sure to carefully plan to separate people who don’t get along or to accommodate people who tend to poo-poo every idea for fun. Another big con is that you lose a lot of the flexibility that solo travel offers. It’s harder to follow your whims when you have your fellow travelers to consider. You may find yourself passing up on experiences that you’d love to enjoy. A final “con” is the financial considerations. Splitting the costs for various aspects of travel can become a real headache. If someone in your group is struggling financially, it may fall to others to help foot the bill. And let’s be honest: someone is always going to weasel out of some of the expenses.

“My Southern Home” with Kimberly Greenwell

BY DAWN ANDERSON • PHOTOS COURTESY OF BARBER CABINET CO.

“I didn’t realize how much I loved homes until I started doing the public relations for Homearama. Now, I have the best of both worlds. I have merged my two loves, homes and broadcast television,” says Kimberly, the Producer and Host of “My Southern Home with Kimberly Greenwell.” imberly, a native of Bardstown, Kentucky, began her career in television after graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with a major in Broadcasting and a minor in Advertising. She moved to Louisville in 2000 to work as an Advertising Account Executive for WAVE 3 TV. Several years later, Borrell Associates recruited Kimberly as an Interactive Media Consultant to assist television stations, print media, and radio stations with digital advertising platforms. After a layoff in 2009, she soon went to work for herself. Kimberly brought all her education and experience to bear starting KAG Consulting. The public relations, brand management, and strategic media marketing company helps clients all over the country, including several well-known comedians. She became well-versed in home-building, remodeling, and real estate through her PR work for one of her first clients, the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville. This new level of expertise led Kimberly to another unexpected career shift “and back in front of the camera.” In 2015, Louisville’s WBNA 21 asked Kimberly to build, produce, and host a local home television show, “Your Kentuckiana Home,” still available today on the Your Kentuckiana Home YouTube channel. She enjoyed the experience so much that she 24 louisville homes & gardens | february 2022

was inspired to create her own television program, over which she could have even more control. Production on “My Southern Home with Kimberly Greenwell” began in July 2017 and expanded to the Nashville, Tennessee, market in the fall of 2018. “My Southern Home” is an interview-style television program featuring home building contractors and homeowners, “the only home show that introduces you to beautiful homes, and the people that make them gorgeous.” Kimberly interviews contractors and the homeowner in three 6-8 minute segments for each episode to discuss the homeowners’ inspirations, trends, and an overall view of the home. “Our goal is to educate and inspire homeowners to create their dream spaces, no matter the square footage.” In just five years, producing and hosting ten seasons of “My Southern Home” has dramatically increased the variety of contractors and vendors Kimberly features. “My knowledge of the industry has continued to grow with more specialized home-related topics. The more I learn, the better my questions are. Better questions lead to more knowledge for the viewers.”

supply chain issues. “It’s not a matter of if there will be issues, but what those issues will be,“ says Kimberly. “Patience is the name of the game. When you work with experts, there is no problem that can’t be solved. And there will be problems.”

Viewers interested in home-building, buying, or remodeling should be prepared to confront challenges in the current housing market, not the least of which are

Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towel Bundle $69/2 brooklinen.com (left)

Care tips:

Skip fabric softeners and dryer sheets when laundering your towels: this adds a residue that reduces the absorbency. Dryer balls with a drop or two of your favorite essential oil is all you need! Don't use bleach. Instead, put a cup of white vinegar in the wash with your towels once a month. This will help remove oils and residue from the towels, keeping them absorbent and fresh-smelling. Hang towels on a bar rather than a hook for the fastest drying time, or use a towel warmer. The longer a towel is wet, the more likely it is to get funky. Bath towels should be washed every three to five uses. Oversized bath sheets offer more warmth and a larger size, which means more snuggling. Regular bath towels are easier to launder. As the name suggests, hand towels are for drying your hands!

Southern Interior Design Trends for

2022

Ballard Designs

As you begin planning your home renovation projects and updates for 2022, it's always helpful to know what's on trend and what's considered truly timeless. We think Kentucky homeowners should always consider adding just a smidge of southern flair to their homes, and these options are the perfect mix of trendy and timeless.

Plantation Shutters This style of shutter is seen all across the south as both a decorative element and a protection from sea breezes or harsh rain. Plantation shutters are a permanent, versatile window treatment. These wide louver blinds feature broad slats of wood or vinyl, providing energy efficient insulation in the summer and winter. The bold lines cut a striking figure while diffusing light through the room in a way that’s often far more appealing than traditional blinds. also be customized for your home’s interior in a variety of finishes or colors.

Pattern Play The best tip that professional interior designers have to offer is to always mix patterns. If you have the luxury of designing an entire room from scratch, start with the rug; many people finish a room, then struggle to find a rug that matches. Next, pick a showstopping fabric that – while not necessarily the focal point of the room – will be seen instantly when walking in. Many people use this fabric for sitting chairs, headboards or dining chair upholstery. Select a fabric (or two, or three) that complement the showstopper while being a bit more subtle. Then choose your wallpaper and/or paint colors. Be sure to break up the patterns with solid pieces and tastefully-chosen neutrals.

offices. Natural materials, ample natural light, pleasing curves and pretty plants all satisfy this inherent desire. As you work on your home’s designscape this year, think about how you’d like to bring the outside in. From big arched windows to landscape murals, the options are limitless!

Walls! One of the biggest comebacks in interior design is… the wall! Open concept homes have ruled the roost for a long time now, but many homeowners are realizing that they actually miss having devoted spaces. It doesn’t necessarily mean a return to square rooms closed in with doors. Instead, it means planning mindfully for private space, functional spaces and progressive entertaining. Expect to see more archways, pocket doors, partial walls and glass partition walls this year. •

Drape Expectations People are thankfully moving back to bold, dramatic, sweeping drapes, and we couldn’t be happier. They’re a lovely way to add texture, color and patterns to a room. They help bring the eye up and add so much visual interest to a room. We’re particularly excited about ways to add drapes in unexpected places!

Biophilic Design This is a buzzword in 2022 interior design circles, which sounds a little clinical. But it’s a concept that we’ve been familiar with all along! In essence, biophilic design satisfies our need to connect with nature in our modern homes and

Rick MILLER MILLER’S FANCY BATH & KITCHEN™ BY DAWN ANDERSON • COURTESY PHOTOS Miller’s Fancy Bath & Kitchen™ has been familyowned and operated for nearly a century. Rick Miller’s grandfather started with a plumbing business in 1926. The company grew to provide custom bathroom and kitchen design, construction, and renovation. Miller recently hosted his annual dinner at Mesh Louisville as a thank-you to contractors, employees, and their spouses and partners. “We show appreciation for our, salespeople, designers, and all our predecessors for building our legacy.” Third-generation Owner and Designer Rick Miller is a Louisville native, a graduate of Ballard High School, and attended the University of Louisville and Bellarmine University. He has received extensive design and sales training from the National Kitchen & Bath Association and has designed thousands of kitchens and bathrooms for over thirty years. “I’m a numbers guy. I still do some design, but I enjoy building the business and platform to support our other designers. Since its inception, Miller’s Fancy Bath & Kitchen™ has been led by several business principles concerning integrity, quality, ethical standards, and fair pricing have led since its inception. The beautiful showroom demonstrates the team’s creative design abilities. Miller believes the staff is what sets the business apart. “They care about satisfaction. And our salespeople truly care about the customers.” Whether seeking information, shopping for a single product, or requiring in-depth professional construction or remodeling help, experienced sales staff and designers present ideas and guide customers in all product selections. The team takes responsibility for the complete decor package, troubleshooting, maintaining the project timeline, and complete customer satisfaction with the finished design product throughout the project. Miller’s Fancy Bath & Kitchen™ also takes care of smaller improvement projects and repairs.

Miller and his team specialize in the Louisville market’s highly-favored “Elegant Traditional” design aesthetic, but they are well-versed in hard and soft contemporary design as well. Some industry and local trends in the bathroom and kitchen design space include more color and brighter lighting. Greens are on-trend, especially dark green. Slab door cabinets are rising in popularity over flat panels or raised panels. And taupe, green, and natural stained wood such as walnut or oak are gaining preference over white cabinetry. “Lighting is an underrated consideration for kitchens and baths,” says Miller. Recessed LED lighting controlled by a single dimmer switch lights the entire room to banish the shadows. “You may think it will be too bright, but it is the first thing you will notice and compliment when you see the results.” Pay a visit to the showroom at 3730 Lexington Road Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm to check out all the latest styles.
