llison Carothers, owner and manager of Summer Classics in Westport Village, and her husband Mark called their cozy Jeffersontown residence “home” for 16 years. While the house welcomed two babies into the Carothers’ family and countless family and friends for celebrations, the Carotherses knew they desired a little more room to grow and entertain. Allison and Mark discovered a lot in Persimmon Ridge and knew instantly they had found the location for their forever home. The beautiful, expansive wooded lot looks upon two lakes; a perfect retreat for a family that loves nature and the water. Allison, a professional designer, joined forces with Tracee Dore Builders on the design of their home. Tracee and her team settled on a beautiful Modern Craftsman, 4-bedroom, 4-½-bath dream dwelling with black and cream exterior features. The design would provide the comfort and style the Carotherses appreciate with space for the gatherings that they are known to joyfully host.

When it came to designing the home during Covid, Tracee and Allison set up both Zoom calls and in-store meetings; they even went to the Atlanta Market to solidify their vision. “Most clients aren’t clear on the vision, which is why I have to help so much to create the design,” Tracee said. “Allison didn’t need much guidance because she knew her vision. Sometimes it’s hard to design for a designer, but not for Allison. She was open-minded and had such a great design team at the store to collaborate with.” Allison was particular with her wants; she desired clean lines and a simplistic, not too trendy design. The Carothers family and their two school-aged children also knew they wanted a space for entertaining with a large outdoor pool area. The home was designed with the backyard in mind. Allison’s dad, Fred Butler, constructed pools for 30-plus years, so an infinity pool seemingly overflowing into the lakes was a must. The space also includes a grilling area with a personalized bourbon barrel cooler, an abundance of Summer Classics’ seating for guests, a television, and fireplace.

Inside the tall accordion sliding doors that bring the outside in, a round table was placed in a practical dining nook with a bar and television. The kitchen shares the cream theme with GE Cafe appliances and gold fixtures. Some of the focal points of the cooking area is the wooden hood, the inspiration for the room, and gold and cream accent tiles. A 9-foot white quartz island is outfitted by Gabby barstools, sitting underneath quartz and gold lighting and a ceiling made from reclaimed Kentucky horse farm fencing. The living area is lit by a modern and glam Gabby light fixture and features a gas fireplace surrounded by stone tile by Louisville Tile. A powder room is accessorized by a blue and white floral wallpaper and white quartz tile. Engineered hickory hardwood was placed throughout the home. The home office features hunter green walls with gold accents. The first primary bedroom features a spacious bath with ombre tile which Allison designed, a white walk-in shower, and an adjacent walk-in closet. Upstairs, the playroom is outfitted with a gaming area and bunk beds. The children each have their own rooms with bathrooms, walk-in closets, and a loft in the girl’s room.

Get ready to do decking differently...

20 louisville homes & gardens | june 2022

You know the routine;

every summer, we emerge from our homes and step out onto our neglected decks and think, “Wow, we really need to update this space.” And we tell ourselves, “Next year, I’ll get on that…” But somehow, we never seem to get around to it. Decks offer us so much. They’re outdoor entertaining spaces, where we gather with friends and family for cookouts and relaxing evenings of chatting ‘til dark. They're cozy spots for moments of relaxation. They’re basically an extra room added onto our homes, whether we use them as outdoor kitchens, a sunny spare office or the kids’ play place. In between naps in the sun and manning the grill, let this be the year you finally make plans to take your deck from “fine” to “fabulous!” Ready to think differently about your decking? We looked for the latest tips and trends to help you make the most of your outdoor areas. by Amanda Harper

Easy Transition

One of the biggest architectural trends is making indoor and outdoor spaces virtually seamless. This home lets the deck ramble along its architecture, encouraging guests to meander through the home and backyard. The outdoor kitchen and bar is easily accessed from both the main kitchen and the screened-in porch. Guests can wander along to the hot tub, wander down the hill to the family's fire pit or head up for a hike in the woods. By building the deck from concrete and stucco, it feels like a natural extension of the cut stone pathways. If you want this to work for you own home, consider how you can connect your spaces so the transition from indoors to outdoors is an easy one.

Think Outside the Box

Some of the most innovative deck ideas are taking shape in interesting ways. (Pardon the pun.) If you want an outdoor space that looks like it was truly built just for you, consider an interesting shape. Throwing curves and angles into your design can be an architectural challenge, but one any experienced builder would be thrilled to meet.

HGTV

Stuck with a rectangular footprint? Talk to your architect about your vision. You may have options for rounding out the edges or creating more visual interest – or even the illusion of curves – with clever railing or overhangs.

Detach Yourself

While we advocate for easy transitions from one space to the next, that doesn't mean everything has to be perfectly chained together. This bayside home shows the power of separating your spaces. This detached cabana serves as a changing room for the pool as well as an outdoor conversation spot. The fireplace and hot tub make it cozy year-round, while the television offers lots of entertainment. But that's not their only outdoor area! The home features a stunning screened-in deck with a dining area and two separate conversation areas.

Material, Girl!

What's the biggest reason you're procrastinating on redoing your deck? I bet it's the age-old grumble, "When am I gonna have to re-do it next?" You're in luck! One of the biggest trends in decking right now are durable materials that are made to last. Many of these materials can look just like real lumber... or look nothing at all like traditional woods! They offer endless customization options and plenty of flexibility to mix and match for interesting designs and a unique look.
