In a ceremony at Merchant Taylor’s Hall in London, the World’s Best and individual country winners in the World Whiskies Awards and the Icons of Whisky global winners were announced, as well as inductees to the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. After winning Whisky Magazine America’s Bar of the Year award for the second year in a row, Bourbons Bistro was also named 2023 Global Bar of the Year.

“There are so many great bourbon bars out there, to be named as American Bar of the Year for two years running was an honor,” explains co-founder Jason Brauner. “When they announced Bourbons Bistro as winner of the global Bar of the Year we were blown away. For 18 years we have worked to bring the best of bourbon culture to our community. We put the time in day after day, week after week, and it’s great to be recognized by one of our industry’s leading publications. Big thanks to Whisky Magazine for this award and congratulations to Heaven Hill and all the other bourbon innovators who were honored in London.”

The publication’s Icons of Whisky has awarded the industry’s best people, places, innovators and agencies since 2007. The global winners were chosen by an expert panel from a shortlist of regional winners from America, Ireland, India, Scotland, and the Rest of the World.

From bartenders to brand ambassadors, chefs to visitor attraction managers, the Icons of Whisky awards honor the people who work tirelessly to produce and promote whisky, along with the very best shops, bars, visitor attractions and agencies. Among this year’s 33 winners were local entrants Heaven Hill Brands, which took home the title of Distiller of the Year, and Bourbons Bistro, named 2023 worldwide Bar of the Year.

On the Icons of Whisky results, Christopher Coates, editor-at-large of Whisky Magazine and chair of both the Icons of Whisky and World Whiskies Awards, said:

“The 17th annual Icons of Whisky awards saw the stiffest competition yet. The experiences offered by the top whisky bars, retailers and attractions today are truly world-class – and have become bywords for hospitality and tourism excellence beyond just the drinks sphere. Learn more about the awards at iconsofwhisky.com.

SleepHygiene

We don’t just mean taking a shower. Sleep hygiene is a set of behavioral practices that began in the 1970s, intended to help those with mild insomnia work their way to more restful sleep. The concept has seen a resurgence in recent years largely due to the influence of blue light – in particular, our phones. Even if you don’t suffer from insomnia, certain sleep practices and routines could potentially help you get a better night’s sleep. And who doesn’t need a little of that in their lives?!

TOPS 17

ENVIRONMENT

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. While it may not always be possible to create the perfect conditions for sleep every single night, you should do what you can to set yourself up for sleep success.

Temperature

Sleep researchers have found that the best temperature for sleep is between 60 to 67°F, with an average of 65° for most people (infants do best with a temperature that’s slightly warmer, up to 69°F).

This is slightly cooler than the ambient temperature most people prefer during the day. Why? The sleep hormone melatonin actually causes your body temperature to drop by up to two degrees, sending warmth to your outer extremities and letting your core cool. Warm temperatures can cause fatigue and restlessness.

Comfort is Key

We don’t have to tell you that having a comfortable, supportive bed is important to sleep. But you might need reminding that having the right pillow and bedding for your needs is just as important. Invest in your sleep comfort!

NOISE

Noise tends to disrupt sleep. While it may seem counterintuitive, many people find that consistent noise helps them sleep better; it can “drown out” random environmental noises, such as passing traffic or barking dogs. Studies consistently show that noise machines do help people sleep better. A recent study showed that people who listened to a white noise machine actually fell asleep 38% faster!

White Noise

Explaining what white noise actually is can be a little complicated and full of jargon. Put most simply, it’s a sound generated by a random signal of equal intensity at different frequencies; the result is a staticky hiss sound that stays at a fairly even volume. This is fairly similar to a fan running – which many people enjoy listening to while sleeping!

Pink Noise

Pink noise has more power at lower sound frequencies, making it a deeper, “warmer” sound. To the ear, pink noise falls somewhere between a hiss and a “shh” sound, somewhat like a steady rainfall.

TOPpicks:

YogaSleep Dohm® Sound Machine (comes in 6 colors $49.99 yogasleep.com)

Brown Noise

This sound has even deeper low frequencies without the high frequency sounds heard in white and pink noises. Brown noise sounds a lot like waves of the ocean. Some studies show that brown noise can help with tinnitus.

Ambient Sounds

Some people prefer sound machines that produce ambient, environmental sounds, such as a jungle or rainy forest. Studies show that these sounds especially help people who struggle to unwind before bed. These can also be more effective if you know that there will be a lot of noises around you while you sleep; the randomized natural sounds can mask the sudden noises going on around you.

Earplugs

For many people, any noise at all can be a problem. Earplugs can dampen or even block incoming sounds. It’s important to select a pair that was designed for sleep, fits comfortably and offers you a level of sound that you’re comfortable with.

ROUTINE

One of the most important foundations of good sleep hygiene – even from its inception – has been setting and maintaining a sleep routine.

Set a Schedule

Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day – yes, even on weekends. This keeps your body’s rhythms on-beat, so to speak. There are apps that can help you determine when the best times to fall asleep and wake up are for your sleep cycles.

Get Ready

Follow the same steps each night for getting ready can help reinforce to your brain that it’s really time for bed. This can also reduce anxiety about the next day; goodbye, Sunday Scaries! For example, this might look like putting on pajamas, going through your skincare routine, brushing your teeth, getting a glass of water and then reading for an hour. This is also a wonderful way to build a little “me time” into your day!

SCREENTIME

KAGED

We are all addicted to screens. Our phones are always within arm’s length, even when we’re watching television and fiddling with our laptop or iPad. Blue light emitted by your screens can disrupt your body’s biological clock, sending signals to your brain that it’s daytime – just before you’re ready to hit the hay.

Power Down

Any light before bed is disruptive to your sleep cycle – yes, even your bedside lamp. The easiest way to get your brain ready for bed is to cut off light sources that aren’t necessary. While you most likely want to be able to see your way to the bed, that makes turning off the TV and your phone the obvious choice. At least an hour before bed, experiment with turning off the TV, putting down your phone and turning off any unnecessary ambient lights.

Night Shift

Most phones have a “night shift” feature that changes the screen’s light output away from the blue light spectrum. This is definitely the wisest choice for anyone who simply can’t put down their phone before bed. Again, it’s best to do this at least one hour before bedtime. If you’re reading in bed, use night mode for the duration.

Screen Your Content

Scrolling through social media, reading the news, streaming the latest episode of your favorite thriller… we’re all guilty of consuming internet content at night that isn’t exactly conducive to sleep. Before bedtime, filter out any digital input that might get your heart rate elevated or mind racing.

WHEN’S IT TIME FOR AN INTERVENTION?

If you have tried just about everything and you’re still struggling to sleep, it may be time to consult a doctor or sleep expert. While OTC treatments may provide some relief, it’s important to rule out sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome.

Melatonin

Many people have begun taking melatonin supplements before bed. Studies have shown that this supplement is especially helpful for people who must sleep during daytime hours, such as night shift workers.

Herbal Tea

Many herbal (caffeine-free!) teas designed to act as sleep aids are on the market. The effectiveness obviously varies by the ingredients contained within, but most people find simply enjoying a warm beverage before bed quite soothing.

Lavender

For centuries, lavender’s soothing fragrance has been considered a natural sleep aid. The few studies into its efficacy have shown promising results, but more research is needed. If you enjoy the scent, an essential oil diffuser in your room with lavender oil may be just the ticket.

CBD

Many studies have shown that CBD can help reduce anxiety and help you get a better night’s sleep. While more research may be needed into whether it’s an effective treatment for diagnosed sleep disorders, most anecdotal reports say that CBD does help many people with sleep!

Tryptophan

This amino acid has been shown to improve sleep quality. Your body needs this amino acid and can’t produce its own; in addition to helping you sleep better, ensuring this supplement is a part of your vitamin/dietary routine can improve your overall wellbeing!•

Aging WELL

Your health care needs change as you get older. While that is a pretty obvious statement, what’s less obvious is exactly what you should be doing to support your health through the years. While nothing can replace the guidance of your health care team, these are some rough guidelines to think about. Bring along this checklist to your next appointment and see which points you and your doctor think you may want to prioritize in this wonderful decade of your life!

In Your 20s

• Every three years: pap smear and/or HPV screening

• Every six months: dental checkup

• Monthly: at-home breast exams and testicular exams

• Every 10 years: tetanus booster

• STI screening, as discussed with your doctor

• Annual skin checks to search for abnormalities and skin cancer

• Use a daily sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent early signs of aging!

• Get an eye exam every few years to check for certain conditions; more often if you need glasses, wear contacts or notice changes in your eyesight.

• If you’re a woman who plans to have children in the near future, discuss your plan with your ob/gyn. Adjust your contraceptives, vitamin intake/ diet and lifestyle according to their recommendations.

In Your 30s

•Every year: Annual checkup to evaluate your blood pressure and overall well being

•Every few years: cholesterol test (more often if you are at risk of certain cardiovascular conditions)

•If you have certain genetic markers, begin breast cancer screenings. This is part of a longer conversation with your health care team.

•If you don’t already, try adding weight lifting or resistance training to your fitness routine to prevent loss of muscle mass.

•Adjust your skincare routine to prevent or correct fine lines and increase overall brightness.

•If you are planning to have children in your 30s, discuss your plans with your doctor.

•Your fitness routine in your 30s should focus on building a strong core. You also want to follow the American Heart Association’s recommendations for your cardiovascular health (get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity with moderate muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week).

In Your 40s

•Mammograms according to your doctor’s recommendation

•Diabetes screening if you have certain risk factors

•Discuss family history for prostate and/or colon cancer with your doctor to determine if screenings are appropriate.

•Discuss menopause with your doctor and make a game plan for this transition.

•Add collagen powder to your diet to help preserve your skin’s elasticity.

•Adjust your makeup routine to brighten any features that have changed as you’ve aged.

•Adjust your diet according to your doctor’s recommendations.

•Noticing some hair loss? In addition to genetic predisposition, your hair loss could be caused by certain conditions, so it’s important to discuss this with your doctor – and to address it.

Don't think that just because you've aged up a decade, that you get to skip all the healthy stuff you were already doing. These recommendations are cumulative!

In Your 50s

•Every two years: mammogram and/or breast MRI

•Every few years: colon cancer screening

•Get your shingles vaccine!

•Get regular blood screenings to check your kidney health, iron levels and other important health markers.

•Discuss lung cancer screenings with your doctor, especially if you are a current/former smoker or have a family history of lung cancer.

•Ensure your exercise routine includes lots of walking and lowimpact activities to keep you feeling your best without putting unnecessary strain on your joints.

•If you don’t already use daily moisturizers (face and body), add those to your skincare routine now. If you’re still noticing dry skin, consider finding a moisturizer that works better for your needs.

•Adjust your makeup routine to account for your current skin; products you used in previous decades may not work as well now.

•Going gray? Your hair’s texture is probably quite different than before. Adjust your haircare routine accordingly.

•Talk to your doctor about your sexual health. This decade can bring on a lot of changes in this department, so don’t be embarrassed to ask!

•Talk to your doctor about what vitamins and supplements may be appropriate for you.

In Your 60s

•Every year: annual eye exams to screen for certain eye conditions and to check your vision, which will change frequently as you age

•Discuss bone density testing with your doctor, especially if you are a woman.

•Beginning at age 65, get your pneumonia vaccines.

•Beginning at age 65, discuss with your doctor whether pap smears and other frequent screenings are needed going forward.

•Adjust your diet according to your doctor’s recommendations. You may want to increase your fiber intake.

•Make new friends. You’re most likely at a new phase in your life. Developing friendships and forming new connections at this stage is especially important to your well being!

Care There down

This is a topic that’s tough for a lot of folks. It can be embarrassing to talk about! The biggest problem with our taboo reguarding talking about our intimate areas? It can be hard to know if what you’re experiencing is completely normal or not. And while the “feminine care” aisle of your local drugstore offers tons and tons of products, it’s almost impossible to know which product is going to be the best one for your needs. Fortunately, these conversations are becoming more open. Companies are recognizing that women want – and deserve – products that answer intimate care concerns. We’ll break down a few common issues and share what’s worked for us!

26 TOPS

Dryness

There are many reasons you might be experiencing vaginal dryness. Commonly, dips in your estrogen levels – such as those caused by menopause and breastfeeding – can result in this uncomfortable condition. Symptoms may include an itching, burning sensation that can ultimately lead to pain, often during sex. You may have an increase in yeast infections or UTIs. Only your doctor can properly diagnose the cause of these symptoms, as they overlap with many other conditions.

Estradiol

If the symptoms of menopause or vaginal dryness are overwhelming, your doctor may prescribe estradiol. This hormone is the most abundant estrogen produced by the ovaries before menopause. You can supplement it via pills, injections, vaginal rings, transdermal patches, vaginal suppositories, creams and more; talk to your doctor about which form may be easiest for you to use and which may be most effective for your needs. It does have some side effects that you’ll want to discuss and weigh.

Ospemifene

This is another medication that your doctor may prescribe if you are experiencing vaginal dryness. Unlike estradiol, this is not a hormone; instead, it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body and is part of a class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators. Like most medications, this does have some side effects.

Hyaluronic Acid Suppositories

We get it; this is a deeply unsexy phrase. But if you’re experiencing vaginal dryness, it may be a godsend!

You may recognize hyaluronic acid from your skincare routine. It’s a slippery substance that your body produces naturally to do things like keeping your joints moving smoothly and helping retain hydration.

According to suppository brand Revaree®, 84% of women studied saw an improvement in vaginal dryness when using hyaluronic acid suppositories. One of the consequences of vaginal dryness is that your tissues become irritated, leading to itching and burning. The moisture attracted by hyaluronic acid can create an environment that allows these tissues to heal; 86% of users reported a reduction of these symptoms!

You don’t need a prescription to give hyaluronic acid suppositories a try. You can purchase them online or at some drugstores. It has fewer side effects than estradiol and can be combined with most medications (but still talk to your doctor or pharmacist about possible interactions).

Wait... is it your bath?

We love tub time as much as the next gal, but all those bubbles and fizzies can be a problem for your lady bits. If you take baths and experience irritation, UTIs, yeast infections or other discomfort, you may want to read on.

Almost all bath products – from liquid bubble baths to bath bombs – contain fragrances, dyes, soaps and oils that disrupt the microorganisms that work to keep everything in ship shape. This could alter your pH, leading to irritation or even infections. Even “natural” bath goods can upset this delicate balance.

That’s not to say you have to give up baths! Instead, take baths as a special relaxation treat rather than a frequent part of your care routine. If you’ve been out and about – or you’re sweaty, dirty or grimy – take a quick shower with soap first. It’s also a good idea to do a quick rinse after your bath, then pat everything dry with a clean towel.

Don’t use bath products that contain soap –including any bubble baths. Anything heavily scented or deeply dyed is best nixed. And avoid products containing glitter (yes, even if it’s “body-safe”) or glycerin. Instead, choose bath salts, oils and bombs that are designed for sensitive skin.

TOPS 27

Skin Care

You probably don’t think about your downstairs beauty routine. But your skin in that region can be quite temperamental. A boutique industry has cropped up to help address sensitive, dry, bumpy, irritated skin in sensitive spots. One of our favorite brands is Fur. They launched with the idea of helping people with body hair maintenance, but the founders quickly realized that people needed gentle, effective skincare for their intimate areas (their Ingrown Microdart Patch is a lifesaver!)

If you have nagging skin concerns in that region, speak to your gynecologist first. They can often diagnose the issue and help you build a care plan to rectify it. But they may ultimately suggest you go see a dermatologist.

Inescapable Infections

So many women are at their wit's end with recurring UTIs, cases of bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections and more. If this sounds like you –and you're already in regular conversations with your health care team – we can help you build a toolkit to at least find some relief.

Cranberry Supplements

Taking cranberry extract supplements daily seems to help prevent recurring urinary tract infections. They also contain antioxidants, can help increase "good" cholesterol, protect against stomach ulcers and offer a host of other health benefits.

Urinate Often

The best thing you can do for your urinary tract health is... well, to go! Stay well-hydrated, urinate after any sexual activity and go when you gotta go (holding it can strain your bladder muscles and could allow bacteria to multiply within your bladder.)

Boric Acid Suppositories

Combined with a doctor's prescribed treatment, a boric acid suppository can help resistant or recurrent vaginal infections, particularly bacterial vaginosis (BV). Simply insert a capsule before bed and wear a panty liner overnight. You may wish to rinse the area in the morning.

Vitamin E

Doctors recommend this vitamin to treat certain types of vaginal inflammation. One study shows vitamin E may help with vaginal atrophy – a thinning of the vaginal walls due to lack of estrogen, which changes your pH and can lead to recurrent infections. You can purchase vitamin E suppositories or apply vitamin E oil directly to the vulva, which can help soothe itching, burning and inflammation.

Baking Soda

Earlier, we discussed how baths may be causing your discomfort. But they may also be a solution! Adding up to a Tablespoon of baking soda to your bathwater may help calm the itching.

Probiotics

Pilaris and helps prevent ingrowns$52 furyou.com)

The (scientific) jury is still out on whether probiotics actually help support the vaginal bacterial biome. But if you've tried everything else, we'll chalk this one up to can't hurt; worst case scenario, you're helping out your gut health! Take probiotic supplements and/or consume probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, kombucha, kimchi and sauerkraut. Adding up to a Tablespoon of baking soda to your bathwater may help calm the itching. •

Weight Loss Trends

Even with the right diet and exercise, losing weight can be difficult! With juice cleanses, medications and herbal supplements around every corner claiming to help you lose half your body weight in a snap, it can be confusing and frustrating when you find yourself needing a little support.

There are plenty of popular medications on the market that can help you kickstart your weight loss journey. Here, we’ve listed a few of the trendiest medications and supplements to help you while researching your options. Just remember, we are not medical experts! You should always talk with your doctor before starting any new medications, supplements or diet plans.

HEALTH

Ozempic

Though officially not a weight loss drug, Ozempic has recently gained popularity for its ability to help people shed a few pounds. Formulated to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar, Ozempic is a once-a-week injection that contains semaglutide. Semaglutide is an FDA-approved ingredient known for treating obesity and other weight-related problems (and is also the main ingredient in Wegovy, another drug we’ll get into later!)

Ozempic works by enhancing the effects of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which affects the hunger mechanism in the brain. It helps by reducing appetite and cravings and by prolonging fullness after meals. Medications like Ozempic are designed to be taken long-term, so if you’re looking to drop just a few pounds, it may not be your best option. It can also have some uncomfortable side effects. Be sure to ask your doctor about all your weight loss options!

Wegovy

Like Ozempic, Wegovy is a once-weekly semaglutide injection that affects how appetite works in the brain. With Wegovy, users can regulate appetite, eat less, lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy differs from Ozempic in just a few ways, including its higher doses, the physical injection pen, and who the medication is indicated for. Where Ozempic is formulated for type 2 diabetics, its sister medication is specifically approved for chronic weight management. Nevertheless, both medications have been proven safe and effective in aiding with weight loss.

Mounjaro

Unlike Ozempic and Wegovy, Mounjaro is a medication known as tirzepatide. This injectable type 2 diabetes medication works by directly activating GIP and GLP-1 pathways to regulate blood sugar. It helps suppress appetite and makes you feel more full. It also changes the rate at which your stomach empties. Because it works on two fronts, it may trigger more rapid weight loss than Ozempic or Wegovy. That said, it has not yet been approved as a weight loss drug at this time.

TOPS 31
FYI: Many of these injections can be self- administered at home.

Phentermine

Phentermine, or Adipex-P, is used to help people struggling with obesity or weight-related problems in the form of a pill. Phentermine is similar to amphetamine prescriptions like Vyvanse and stimulates the central nervous system to decrease your appetite and increase the energy used by your body.

Adipex-P must be prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken about 1 to 2 hours before breakfast; be sure to follow your prescription label and your doctor’s instructions, as you should with all prescription medications! Adipex-P is designed for short-term use only, as the effects of appetite suppression can wear off after a while. Combined with a healthy diet and exercise, you may see results quickly.

B12 Injections

Vitamin B12 largely contributes to the overall health of your body. While it’s not designed for weight loss, it may help your body metabolize fat efficiently and effectively. B12 injections are prescribed by your doctor, but there are also B12 supplements that you can pick up over the counter. Injections, however, can help you get the full benefits of vitamin B12 being deposited directly into your bloodstream. B12 injections may be administered once or twice a week and can boost your energy levels, improve metabolism, resolve fatigue and brain fog, and result in better mood and cognition. Who wouldn’t want that?!

Ashwagandha

With a reputation as a jack-of-all-trades, ashwagandha works in clever ways to support brain function, aid mental illness symptoms, and even help with weight management. This powerful adaptogen is jam-packed with antioxidants, which play a role in decreasing inflammation in the body and triggering your metabolism. Ashwagandha also helps to minimize the effect of cortisol in your body, and with cortisol being responsible for increasing cravings, the adaptogen can help curb your appetite and, ultimately, assist in your weight loss journey. With less stress in your system, you’ll find yourself sleeping better, having less anxiety, feeling more energetic, and, most importantly, your hormones will be properly balanced! •

SENIORS HELPING SENIORS

Brightening the lives of seniors is the most important mission of Seniors Helping Seniors.

“Our caregivers are mostly seniors themselves, so they can relate better to their clients,” explains owner Angela Gibson. “They make clients’ lives easier by providing compassionate care.”

Their in-home care services can mean the world to seniors who need a helping hand and a friendly smile.

Seniors Helping Seniors offer a variety of caregiving services in the comfort of a senior’s own home.

“Our in-home care services empower seniors to continue to live independent lives by taking care of day-to-day tasks that become more challenging as you age,” Gibson says. They’re also able to offer care out and about, such as providing an escort to appointments and events.

Seniors Helping Seniors doesn’t ascribe to a one-size-fits-all mentality. Instead, they focus on helping each senior with their unique needs and hopes.

Gibson adds, “As your health and personal requirements change, we’re here to assist you in the ways you find most helpful.”

BELLATOX BOUTIQUE

Thanks to a talented aesthetics team with expertise beyond their years and a care for clients that is second to none, BellaTox Boutique offers the kind of prevention and maintenance that is key to aging gracefully.

The team includes Julie Bella Robbins, Lauren Antione, Mary Taylor, Hayley Durham, Brooke Stiller, Frank Morales, Sarah Goldsmith, Andrew Nobles, Alexis Underwood, Sara Johnson, Naomi Pappas, Emily Marlow, Presleigh Gavin and Christy Lopp — a group of experts often known as the “Bellatox Babes,” who have mastered a wide range of medical spa offerings.

“We offer all brands of injectables, skincare techniques from the glass facial to hydrafacial, peels, permanent makeup, BB Glow, lashes, teeth whitening and laser procedures, including intense pulsed light therapy, Morpheus treatment and Emsculpt,” the team explained. “With our tasteful, elegant expertise, you’ll get the exact look you want.”

In addition to its all-star team and wide range of cutting-edge techniques, BellaTox Boutique may be best known for the genuine care it shows its clients.

“We do not oversell or present any options that would not benefit our clients — that is our signature motto,” they said. “We treat each patient individually and use a step-by-step approach. Abs are not built from one visit to the gym, so we have to stay consistent: prevention and maintenance are key to this journey.”

That focus on consistency and maintenance, rather than drastic transformation, is another one of BellaTox’s signatures.

“We all have to start somewhere,” the team reflected. “We will get you to your individual goals and keep you looking youthful with a natural approach. It’s an outlook that our clients really appreciate, we all love a little improvement.”

Their Medical Director (and “Captain... the man, the myth, the legend,” according to his team), Dr. Q, is trained in both general surgery and plastic surgery. He specializes in Advance Facial and body countouring plastic and cosmetic surgery. His training and research experience includes the University of Louisville, MIT, Massachusetts General Hospital, Tulane University and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Dr. Q also owns JQ Plastic Surgery.

The boutique also serves clients through some other unique offerings, outside even the cutting-edge treatments it has mastered. Its aesthetic services training program can teach interested clients how to perform Botox injections. And, speaking of, Bellatox can bring that treatment to you in a fun and innovative way through its popular Botox Party program. It even has alternative financing options to help clients purchase the new treatments they’ve been wanting. Outside-of-the-box services like those are simply extensions of its modern anti-aging approach.

“BellaTox’s gentle touch has been cultivated by years of experience in aesthetics and beauty, as well as over a decade’s experience in nursing,” the team concluded. “This elegantly-tasteful establishment offers non-invasive neurotoxins, dermal fillers, makeup, brows, facial treatments, customized skincare, Kybella, dermaplaning, peels, microneedling and vitamin-infused IV hydration, all with a personalized touch.”

Perhaps most excitingly, they’re thrilled to announce that they have recently moved their Louisville office! Their new location means they can offer even more services, such as the Hydrofacial Morpheus eight, which includes RadioFrequency and microneedling hair, laser, removal, IPL and EmSculpt for body contouring.

Claudia Coffey s s r be r t e

If I only knew then what I know now about skincare, I would have started listening and taking far better care of it when I was in my early 20s. Thank God for products that can turn back the hands of time. There are plenty of them and I swear I have tried every single one. If I see a trend pop up in my IG feed, I am instantly obsessed. I can’t absorb enough information on the wonders of Rose Hip Oil to Vita C and I have to learn (AKA: buy) more.

The number one thing I get asked by women, viewers and readers all the time: What’s your skincare routine, what’s your secret? The answer: to have a skincare routine!

I’ll be honest; it’s hard to age as a woman AND do it in front of a high-res camera each and every day. About three years ago, I finally settled into a skin care routine of high-quality products and regular beauty treatments. I have found that using products geared toward my skin type, age and lifestyle finally clicked and I started seeing results. As we get ready to transition into summer, I am moving these products into my skincare lineup.

Cleanser

I switch between two products depending on the dryness of my skin. I love Luzern. Their extra gentle gelee can remove the remnants of makeup after a busy day and leave my skin feeling silky smooth. ZO gentle cleanser is good for just about every skin type. It removes oils, makeup, dirt and impurities. My skin feels so clean and has a glow after using it.

Vita C/Serums

Vita C is the single skin care item I cannot live without. Obagi is the gold standard for Vita C products. I use the 20% concentration and apply three drops over my face, neck and décolleté every morning after cleansing. Not only will it brighten your skin, but it protects it, stimulates collagen and evens out the tone.

My skin often needs an extra boost of moisture. At night, I like to add in PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum. I use this after cleansing my face and after retinol. Especially after retinol! It gives instant and deep hydration and encourages the skin to stimulate its own hyaluronic acid.

Retinol

I have had great luck with the Obagi 0.5 retinol. I can only tolerate it 2-3 times a week. It’s the only way to turn over that skin, reduce fine lines and get that radiant glow.

Moisturizer

I just introduced skinbetter science into my routine and I love it! This line is for those seeking clean skincare backed by skincare chemistry. Morning and night, I use Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment. It delivers a lot of hydration without the weight.

Sunscreen

I don’t go grocery shopping without my sunscreen on, and I wear it now in the winter! I had a scary brush with skin cancer on my chest this last year and now I make sure I am applying every day and frequently throughout the day. You can’t go wrong with Elta MD UV Daily Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40. It’s dermatologist-recommended, lightweight, goes on super smooth and blends well.

Extras

I try to get Dermaplanes every six weeks just to exfoliate the surface of the skin and remove those fine hairs. I like to combine it with a facial sometimes just for an extra detox. In between facials, I’ll use skinbetter science Exfoliating Peel pads. It’s like a mini peel that tingles the skin and delivers a combo of retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids. Whatever skin care routine you land on, just give it some time. Be patient. It took about 3 months for me to first start seeing results. And remember caring for your skin is one of the best forms of self-care. When your skin looks and feels good – you are mentally in a good place and it makes a world of difference to your outlook.

It’s time to get out and soak up the delicious sun! Whether you’re heading to the tropics or enjoying a relaxing staycation, getting your summer body ready for sand, sun, and surf can feel like a daunting task. Fortunately, we’ve created a guide to a variety of detoxes and cleanses for the summer, so you can flaunt your new teeny-weeny polka dot bikini wherever you are!

HEALTH TIPS

natural detoxing

Limit Alcohol

Drinking too much alcohol can not only make you feel bloated, but it can also prevent your liver from carrying out normal functions, such as detoxifying. Cutting out wine, beer, and cocktails is one simple way to reduce bloating and even lose a bit of weight before summer. Instead of reaching for a beer, try drinking green tea to boost your metabolism or lemon water to kickstart your digestive system.

Eat Fresh

A nice, juicy cheeseburger may sound tantalizing, but high fiber, protein-rich foods are the way to go when detoxing. Foods like salmon, sweet potatoes, dark chocolate, walnuts, and quinoa all contribute to a healthy diet with plenty of health-supporting attributes.

Eating foods high in prebiotics is also important for keeping your detoxification system in check. Good food sources of prebiotics include bananas, oats, garlic, tomatoes, asparagus, and more. These foods can also help your immune system, keeping you happy and healthy!

Get More Sleep

Adequate sleep is critical to supporting your body’s health, and can even cause toxin build-up if you don’t get enough z’s during the night. Getting 7-9 hours each night allows your brain to recharge from the day while simultaneously eliminating toxins. A good night’s sleep can even help control your appetite throughout the day, so no more overeating!

juice cleanses

Suja Organic

Suja Organic offers a variety of organic, cold-pressed juices made from plant-based, non-GMO ingredients, with prices that won’t break the bank. Suja offers two cleansing options, the 1-Day Detox and the 3-Day Cleanse. Crafted with daily wellness and nutrition in mind, Suja has plenty of juices to defend your wellness and kickstart healthier habits.

Pulp & Press

If you’re a fan of green juices, Pulp & Press is your bread and butter. The company has four different cleanses, and offers the option to choose cleanse duration. The best part is, if you’re not wanting to complete an entire cleanse, you can order individual juices, wellness shots, and smoothies, all made with high-quality ingredients.

Lemonkind

Lemonkind offers a range of functional ready-to-drink and ready-to-mix products, expertly crafted to support your wellness journey. With five different juice cleanses, and two fat-burning latte cleanses, there is something for everyone! Many of Lemonkind’s juices contain powerful superfoods and nutrient-dense botanicals, which come in easy, single-serve pouches. Plus, if you have food allergies or just don’t like an ingredient, Lemonkind offers a customizable cleanse.

While juice cleanses are a popular way to reset your body, there are varying opinions on the health benefits of doing a juice cleanse. You should talk to a doctor before implementing a large change in your diet, and always listen to your body and what it needs!

If you wear a fragrance regularly, you probably have a very particular way you apply it. Maybe you spray it into the air, then walk into the mist. Maybe you splash a little on your wrists and pat them together. Or maybe you spray until you can barely breathe, then do another spritz for good luck.

There are many methods for wearing fragrance. Everyone swears their method is the right one. But odds are good that your way is… well, wrong. Many of our fragrance tips have been informed by the aesthetic appeal of the process rather than its actual efficacy. We’re here to tell you what works, what doesn’t and what you need to know about making your fragrance last as long as possible.

60 TOPS
LIFESTYLE
Sense

Don’t: Rub It In

Many people think that rubbing their wrists together, then rubbing their wrist along their neck “heats up” the fragrance, making it project further. That’s true, but for the worst reason; this method nearly obliterates delicate top notes – and mashes it together with your skin’s oils – completely changing the way the fragrance smells. The entire point of an alcohol-based perfume is the top, middle and base note structure. The scent gradually changes as you wear it, giving you a different experience throughout the day. Intentionally bringing out the base notes is like skipping the entrée and the dessert to fill up on bread; you’d be better off just buying a less expensive fragrance that consists only of those base notes.

Do: Pulse Points

Rather than rubbing the fragrance around, simply apply it to one or two pulse points and allow it to air dry. This works on the same principle, warming the fragrance to encourage the scent molecules to spread. The key difference is that you’re not interfering with the way the fragrance is supposed to wear. Behind the ear, at the base of the throat, the inner elbow, wrists and behind the knees – more on that later – are popular spots for applying fragrance.

Don’t: Forget That It’s Alcohol!

Certain pulse points simply aren’t a great place to apply fragrance. The alcohol will irritate certain sweat glands and any mucous membranes. Don’t apply perfume near the eyes, nose, mouth, armpits or nether regions – or you will live to regret your choices.

TOPS 61

Don’t: Douse

More is more, right? Some folks spray until their hands hurt, then do one more spritz just to be safe. You’ll know these folks by the cloud of scent that precedes them, then lingers hours after they’re gone – and no, this is never a pleasant reminder of their presence.

Do: Gentle Spritz

If your perfume is a spray, hold it roughly six inches away from your skin. The number of spritzes will depend on the strength of the perfume; a strong scent needs just two or three, while a more intimate fragrance can take up to six.

Do: Moisturize

If you want your perfume to last as long as it possibly can, apply an unscented lotion or petroleum jelly to the area you’ll be applying your fragrance. The scent molecules literally stick around a little longer when they have oil to cling to.

Don’t: Walk Into the Mist

This old Hollywood method looks so chic! You spray the fragrance into the air, then step into the mist as it falls. The idea here is that you can’t possibly over-apply, and the fragrance lands all over you rather than in any one spot. This means that the scent is so diluted it has no lasting power. If you’re in a delicate negligee and you’re about to fix up a Manhattan for your would-be suitor, fine, but as a daily practice? This ain’t it.

Do: In the Hair

One thing the mist method gets right? Applying fragrance to your hair is actually a wonderful way to get some staying power! Your hair is porous, so it can trap a lot of scent. Your scalp offers lots of heat to help the scent molecules do their thing. And your hair (hopefully) has some natural oils to hold onto the fragrance. Be aware that alcohol-based perfumes can be drying to your locks and scalp, and if your hair isn’t freshly washed, your natural oils can affect the scent.

Don’t: Stick to the Same Scent Forever

While we fully support having a “signature” fragrance, wearing the same scent for too long can actually be a problem; you can develop anosmia, or nose-blindness, to the scent. This means you’ll apply more and more of it to be able to smell it, wasting perfume and choking everyone around you. Instead, we recommend switching your daily fragrance seasonally and only wearing your signature scent for special moments. •

Scent L go

Longevity

How long a perfume lasts on your skin.

Sillage

The trail a perfume leaves in your wake. Generally, people use this term to refer to how long it lingers after you’ve left the room.

Projection

How far out from you a perfume can be smelled – even if you’re sitting perfectly still.

Top Notes

The most volatile scent compounds, which are the notes you detect in the first 10 minutes after the perfume has been sprayed.

Heart/Middle Notes

Longer-lasting scent compounds that tend to be the signature of a fragrance. These tend to appear 10-20 minutes after spraying.

Base Notes

The longest-lasting scents in a perfume, which offer depth and longevity to a scent.

Eau de Cologne (Cologne)

A scent with a 2-5% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol. This does not refer to a scent exclusively for men, though that is how we now think of them. How are many colognes so strong? The perfume oils used tend to be base notes!

Eau de Toilette (EDT)

A scent with a 5-10% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol.

Eau de Parfum (EDP)

A scent with a 10-15% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol.

Extrait

A scent with a 15-45% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol (or carrier oil).

Why Choose an All-Inclusive Venue?

Choosing an all-inclusive wedding venue can offer many benefits for couples planning their big day. Here are a few advantages to consider:

1 2 3 4 5 6

Simplifies planning process: An all-inclusive venue can streamline the wedding planning process by providing most or all of the necessary services in one package. This can include the venue itself, catering, decor, and other essential services. By having everything included, couples can save time and energy on researching and booking multiple vendors.

Cost-effective: An all-inclusive wedding venue can be more cost-effective than booking separate vendors for each service. These venues often offer discounts or package deals, which can help couples save money on their wedding budget.

Reduces stress: Planning a wedding can be stressful, but an all-inclusive venue can help alleviate some of that stress. With fewer vendors to coordinate and manage, couples can relax and enjoy their wedding planning experience.

More personalized experience: All-inclusive venues often have a team of wedding planners and coordinators who can work closely with couples to create a personalized wedding experience. They can provide guidance and suggestions based on the couple’s preferences, and help bring their vision to life.

Convenience for guests: An all-inclusive venue can also be convenient for guests, as they won’t have to travel between multiple locations for different parts of the wedding. They can simply arrive at the venue and enjoy the celebration.

Professionalism and expertise: All-inclusive venues often have experienced staff who are knowledgeable about weddings and can provide professional advice and guidance throughout the planning process. This can help ensure that everything runs smoothly on the big day.

Overall, an all-inclusive wedding venue can offer a range of benefits for couples looking for a stress-free, personalized, and cost-effective wedding planning experience.

when Beth and Scott Satterfield moved to the city for his high-profile football head coaching job at the University of Louisville in 2019, the couple also went to work trying to find the perfect home for their family. It wasn’t until 2021 that Zillow had the listing of a Prospect home that had the land they preferred– but it needed quite a lot of work. “It had been on the market for a while, I’m not sure how we didn’t see it,” Beth says. “It was like it was meant to be.” Along with builder David Ramage and designer Clare Miller, the family was determined to make the 1970s-era Old Clore Lane their own. Although the home is now on sale again, as the family moves to Cincinnati for Scott’s newest career move, Beth says she will always love the 6-bed, 7-bath modern farmhouse.

from top to bottom, the team worked to create a dwelling, which sits on over 11 acres, that would make the Satterfields feel at home for even just a short amount of time. “It was neat to see it evolve,” says Beth. “But, it went nothing like the demos on HGTV.” Upon entering, visitors will see a mixed-width French oak floor in a Saronno finish in the grand foyer, flowing seamlessly into the living area. The family wanted an open space for plenty of entertaining, and the main level holds a spacious great room with vaulted ceilings and a cozy fireplace and opens into the gourmet kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances, custom cabinetry by Century, tile, and flooring from Premiere Flooring and lighting from Currey and Company and Visual Comfort, selected through Ferguson. The classic and transitional, farmhouse-like style also included Emtek hardware selected by Willis-Klein, designer paint colors by Benjamin Moore, upscale trim, and an abundance of natural light from the luxurious backyard oasis featuring an in-ground pool and entertaining areas.

the eat-in kitchen comes complete with a butler’s pantry and regular pantry, as well as a wet bar. The sitting area could double as a formal dining room, which welcomes you to the guest suite with an en-suite bathroom and direct access to the backyard. The main level’s expansive primary suite provides seclusion and features double vanity sinks, a tiled stand-alone shower, a soaking tub, and lots of closet space. Also on the main floor is a structured office, spacious laundry room, mud room, wine closet, and guest powder room.

On the second level, there are four bedrooms equipped with an en-suite bathroom and closet. Second-floor highlights include built-in bunk beds, ornate tile, and flex space to be used for a bedroom or second living room. The lower level also includes additional living and entertaining space, a half bathroom, and storage space. “We were thrilled with the end result…it took a long time,” Beth says. “I really feel like we put a lot of our heart and soul and personality in the house…we are sad to leave it, but it’s going to be a great home for a family.” •

strawbe ies!

Strawberries might be the perfect snack. These sweet little jewels contain tons of antioxidants and nutrients. They contain compounds that are good for heart health and blood sugar control – all with relatively few calories per cup. That's just about perfect!

But cooking with strawberries only makes them more enjoyable. They bring vibrant color and tons of flavor to every dish they appear in! Whether enjoyed raw or cooked, baked or jellied, these babies are just such an incredible summer treat.

Fun fact? Strawberries aren't a berry at all; they're actually considered a "multiple fruit," meaning many tiny fruits are contained within a single strawberry. The "seeds" are actually the fruits (known as "achenes"). The more you know!

1 qt. strawberries, stemmed and halved

4 c. sugar

3/4 c. water

1 box Sure-Jell Fruit Pectin

Add strawberries to your food processor and pulse until strawberries are diced, but not fully mashed. Measure 2 cups of the strawberries in a large bowl. Add the sugar one cup at a time, combining completely after each batch. Let stand 10 minutes.

Add water and pectin to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Once the pectin reaches a full boil, stir and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat and add to the strawberry-sugar mixture. Stir well until sugar is dissolved.

Fill clean jars, leaving 1/2” space at the top. Cover with lids and leave to stand for 24 hours at room temperature. After 24 hours, refrigerate for up to 4 weeks or freeze for up to a year.

In a large bowl, toss together strawberries, rhubarb and granulated sugar. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out pie dough or puff pastry to 1/4” thick. Cut into 7” rounds.

Drain strawberry-rhubarb mixture and reserve the liquid for glaze.

In a small bowl, gently whisk together flour and brown sugar.

MEN’S HEALTH

Let’s celebrate Father’s Day!

Keeping up with the kiddos, maintaining a positive role in the community, and helping run the household as a parent is a full time job within itself.

As you age, it is imperative to make the right decisions health wise. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among American men. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to prevent heart disease and keep your heart ticking right along. As men age, their bodies produce testosterone at declining rates. They begin to lose muscle mass and become more prone to weight gain. Their risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes increases.

According to a recent study by the Cleveland Clinic, more than 60% of men don’t go to a doctor regularly. Staying on top of your health is important. Whether it’s attending your son’s game or daughter’s graduation, the goal is to aim to be in good health. Men older than 50 should have a yearly physical exam, and men younger than 50 should have a physical exam every three to five years. Even if you’re feeling healthy, a regular checkup with your health care team is a good way to validate your health or identify a problem in its early stages.

Men store fat differently than women. Women store more fat in the gluteal-

femoral region, whereas men store more fat in the visceral (abdominal) area. Men are more vulnerable to accumulating excess visceral fat, because genetically men are predisposed to storing extra fat in the midsection. Eating the right foods such as lean meat, fruits, and vegetables will keep the body lean and healthy as well as incorporating regular exercise. It is true that the metabolism slows down as we age; however, incorporating exercise and healthy eating habits will enable you to be a role model, lead by example, and keep up with the younger generation.

Taking care of YOUR health is the most important Father’s Day gift you can give yourself and your family! •

Louisville Orchestra announces details of its landmark 2023-2024 season

The Louisville Orchestra (LO) announced details of the 2023-24 season, which marks Teddy Abrams’s tenth season as Music Director of the Orchestra.

In true LO style, this landmark season with Musical America’s 2022 Conductor of the Year will feature programming encompassing favorites of the orchestral repertoire and explore innovative new works, including a festival of original compositions by the 2023 – 2024 members of the Creators Corps, the LO’s ground-breaking residency program.

CELEBRATING TEDDY’S TENTH

At 35, Abrams is the youngest music director of a major American orchestra, a position he assumed at the tender age of 26. Abrams’s concept of a modern orchestra and its conductor is fueled by talent, energy, vision, drive, and an extraordinary commitment to community engagement. Since launching his tenure as music director, Abrams’s innovative, outside-the-box initiatives have succeeded in reconnecting the orchestra with its remarkable history, integrating it into the fabric of Louisville life, and reestablishing it as the cornerstone of the city’s vibrant music scene. Of his time at the LO Abrams says:

“It is so hard to believe that this is my 10th season with the LO! It invites reflection and consideration for the history and the story we’ve been trying to tell for all of you these last 10 years. We’ve been asking, ‘What does it mean to be a public service – to serve you all and take the power of our music and the talents of our musicians to make life better for all of us here in Louisville?’ The power of music is so broad and always reinventing itself. There are always new ways for music to connect with people and new people for music to connect with.”

THE 2023 – 2024 SEASON CLASSICS SERIES AND A SUPERSTAR GUEST CONDUCTOR

The 2023-2024 Classic Series features classical music favorites performed as only the LO can, including Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 6, nicknamed “Tragic”. The annual collaboration with the Louisville Chamber Choir will be J.S. Bach’s masterful setting of the Canticle of Mary, the Magnificat. Also on the series’ programming are intriguing contemporary works by Caroline Shaw, Gabriel Kahane, and John Adams.

In addition, this coming season the LO will welcome one of the most celebrated conductors in the world, the GRAMMY Award-winning JoAnn Falletta. As Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, Falletta became the first woman to lead a major American ensemble and has been credited with bringing the Philharmonic to an unprecedented level of national and international prominence. Recently named as one of the 50 great conductors of all time by Gramophone magazine, she is hailed for her work as a conductor, recording artist, audience builder, and champion of American composers. Falletta will lead the LO in an

exciting program concluding with Ravel’s Bolero POPS SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

In his 40+ years as the Principal Pops conductor of the Louisville Orchestra, Bob Bernhardt has consistently enchanted audiences with his unique combination of easy style, infectious enthusiasm, entertaining programming, and consummate musicianship. In addition to Louisville’s beloved seasonal tradition Holiday Pops, Bernhardt will conduct a variety of audience-pleasing concerts ranging from “frightening” Halloween fare to sports-themed musical favorites to an evening of hits by the Queens of Soul to a rousing season finale of the thrilling sounds of Mexican Mariachi.

FAMILY SERIES

The inspiring evolution of the LO Family programming continues with more interactive fun for the whole family! Once again Old Forester’s Paristown Hall will become the setting for exploring composition, storytelling through musical means, and the structure of the orchestra itself. And, of course, the LO will be celebrating the holidays with a family program featuring Santa himself!

CELEBRATING KENTUCKY

This season runs concurrently with the historic “In Harmony: the Commonwealth Tour of the Louisville Orchestra”, a two-year musical journey beginning in May of 2023 that will bring orchestra musicians to dozens of communities across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The tour is made possible through a partnership with the Kentucky General Assembly in conjunction with the Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet. In the spirit of this musical outreach, the 2023 – 2024 Season will contain native Kentucky composers and performers in new and traditional works. Most notably, the opening concert in September at the Iroquois Park Amphitheater will feature Murray, KY’s own mandolinist extraordinaire, Chris Thile. Thile will give the Kentucky debut of his new piece for singing mandolinist and orchestra.

AND FINALLY – A VERY SPECIAL EVENT INVOLVING THE LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA

In addition to its regular season offerings, the LO also announced that it will share the stage with one of the living vocal legends of our time – the iconic Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Bocelli will be touring the U.S. in November and December and will arrive for one night only at the KFC Yum! Center on December 2, 2023. The program will feature performances from Bocelli’s extensive repertoire, including music in honor of the Holiday Season, with selections from his recent #1 album A Family Christmas, his uplifting solo album Believe, as well as a selection of arias, his beloved crossover hits, and famed love songs.

Information on the complete Louisville Orchestra 2023 -2024 Season can be found at LouisvilleOrchestra.org as well as throughout the season on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The box office can be reached at (502)587-8681.

Honoring Old Glory: Our American Flag

The history of the American flag has been up for scholarly debate since its creation, however, there is no doubt it still elicits feelings of patriotism and nostalgia to this day. It has inspired songs, covered the caskets of heroes, created controversy and has survived battles throughout our country’s history. The American flag has been an integral part of America’s identity and democracy spanning over two centuries.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed an act establishing an official flag for our newly formed nation. The resolution stated: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” Previously, each colony had their own flag, which they flew on colonial vessels. This is where the story of the “Betsy Ross Flag” was born as she was an upholsterer who made flags for the Pennsylvania Navy, although it still has not been verified. Other sources refer to the creator as Francis Hopkinson one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence from the state of New

Jersey. The only evidence of who made the flag is a bill that was submitted to congress by Francis Hopkinson that said for designing the flag, “you owe me two casks of ale.” However, we don’t have a picture or sketch of the flag or a description. So, the folklore continues but has not diminished the importance of Old Glory and its impact on America and the world.

The American flag was designed to represent the thirteen original states: it would have thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, and thirteen stars, white on a blue field. One of the first flags had the stars arranged in a circle, based on the idea that all colonies were equal. The thirteen stripes represented the struggle for independence; red stood for valor, white signified purity and blue represented loyalty. In 1818, after a few revisions, Congress decided to keep the flag’s original thirteen stripes and add new stars to reflect each new state that entered the union. On Aug. 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman officially declared June 14 as Flag Day.

Flag Etiquette

As we celebrate and honor the stars and stripes for Flag Day on June 14th, here are a few rules of etiquette for displaying your flag throughout the year.

• Display the flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings or flagstaffs and at night, only if properly lighted.

• The flag should be raised and lowered by hand and never raised furled.

• Always hoist the flag briskly and lower it ceremoniously.

• The flag may be displayed on any day, but especially on national holidays.

• On Memorial Day, display the flag at half-mast until noon only; then hoist it to the top of the staff.

• When carried, the flag should be held aloft, never flat or horizontal.

• Salute a flag when it passes by in a parade, during the Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem and in a ceremony raising or lowering it.

• The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground or floor, nor brush against any objects, nor be used as drapery of any sort.

• The flag should never be displayed with the union down except as a signal of distress in instances of extreme danger.

• When a flag is no longer in a condition to be displayed, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

And behind those strategies is Mitchell Cotthoff, TOPS Marketing Group’s Vice President of Digital Marketing.

“The online world is evolving and the future of digital marketing is promisingly bright and secure,” Cotthoff explained. “Nearly 77% of companies worldwide have already adopted the industry’s best content marketing strategies, and more are likely to join the list to make a place for themselves in the digital world.”

One of the biggest lessons Cotthoff has learned in business is advice that he thinks could apply to anyone: “Strengthen your weaknesses,” he advises. “While it’s important to always refine your strengths, it’s also important to work on identifying – and strengthen – your weaknesses.”

He knows from experience that one weakness many companies face is lack of time and focus to address the ever-changing digital landscape. That’s where the TOPS Digital Marketing department steps in. They understand a wide range of the technologies available. Most importantly, they know which tactics will best serve the unique needs of businesses of any size – from mom-and-pop operations to large corporations.

Cotthoff is the right person to help companies on that journey as a natural-born leader who relishes the chance to help his teammates achieve their own goals. Just call him Ironman; in his spare time, Cotthoff trains 15 hours a week to compete in Ironman triathlons. That focus extends to your business. He said, “I am dedicated and committed to anything I take on!”

Cotthoff loves the Bluegrass State. “Being in Kentucky means opportunities in the equine and agricultural industries, but there’s also opportunities to be had in creative fields and technologies,” he concluded.
