Soprano Emily Albrink, who has performed in Operas and concerts all over the world, will produce and record an album of new American music to be released in 2022. For the project, Albrink has commissioned all American composers including Jake Heggie (Dead Man Walking, Three Decembers), Rene Orth (Blur, Chasing Light), Nailah Nombeko, and former University of Louisville composition professor Steve Rouse. The album will be recorded at the University of Louisville’s Comstock Hall with pianist Kathy Kelly sometime in May of 2022.

This is the first time Albrink has ventured into the recording arena, having performed live on stage in many venues across the country, and will appear in Kentucky Opera’s production of An American Dream this April. “This is a very new experience for me,” explains Albrink. “It has always been my dream to record an album of American music. When Covid hit, I was overwhelmed by the amount of time spent with my children. When things started to get easier, I felt a strong urge to create — to make music, collaborate with artists, and curate something that will continue to be heard for years to come.”

So Albrink got to work researching costs, producers, sound engineers, record labels, lyricists, and composers. Albrink explains, “For this project, I’ve commissioned all American composers. I can’t even believe that Jake Heggie is writing a cycle for me! He’s going to set text to music that I’m writing all about my relationship with my mom. Jake is one of the most successful classical operatic composers of our generation. I am so lucky to collaborate with him on this project. I’ll also be commissioning the incredible composer, Rene Orth, who is also a mom and whose career is really taking off. Nailah Nombeko, an African American composer out of Brooklyn, is also writing me a cycle along with my good friend Steve Rouse, who just retired from the composition faculty here at UofL. All of the pieces will center around telling the story of what it means to be a WOMAN.”

Albrink’s other inspiration for this project comes from her mother, Nancy Albrink, who passed away suddenly in 2017. “When my mother passed away,” recalls Albrink, “I was 5 weeks pregnant with my second child and it felt as if I had the wind knocked out of me. I had a full-time job, a husband, and a toddler to raise, and knew I had no choice but to keep going. Gigs were on the books and I needed to continue to make music, hoping that it would be my therapy and a way to stay connected to my mom. It turns out that music has, in some ways, become the mother I have lost. I knew I wanted to dedicate this album to my mom but what I didn’t know is that the process of making this album would be more cathartic for me and help me process this loss more than anything I’ve done since she died.”

Albrink has currently launched a fundraising campaign and has hired a Grammy-winning producer and engineer team out of St. Paul to help her record the album at Comstock Hall in Louisville. Her next plan will be to reach out to record labels to distribute the music and to develop a recital that will tour multiple venues across the country.

transitional style over oking captain's quarters

amy Wagner is an award winning designer and premier luxury realtor in Kentucky and Alabama.

Amy’s clients stick with her from start to finish when buying and designing their dream home. When a family decided to hire Amy to sell their home, they purchased a 4,700-square-foot Harrods Creek home with incredible views of Captain’s Quarters Yacht Club, Amy was ready to help them gut and remodel it to their liking. “My clients were amazing,” Amy says. “They trusted me to 100% assist with the full house gut and renovation. Every design aspect inside and out was touched by Reflections of You, By Amy.”

In the recreation of the 1998 brick, 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom, 2-story walk-out, Amy, builder Robert Osborne, and the homeowners worked together to create a transitional and clean look with bleached engineered hardwood from Boney Mountain’s Medallion Collection throughout, purchased from Sam Kinnaird’s Flooring and Granite. Paint colors were muted and included Revere Pewter, Gray Cashmere and White Dove, all by Benjamin Moore.

A focal point of the family room includes a floor-to-ceiling blue, glass subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern, from Louisville Tile, creating an accent wall that encapsulates the fireplace. “I shared three design options for each area, giving the clients an opportunity to select the choice they liked best,” Amy says. “My goal was to ensure the design of the home reflected the personality of my clients while providing a cohesive design throughout the home.”

The first-floor primary suite has tray ceilings and includes a spacious bathroom and walk-in closet and a powder room, with custom black and white tile spelling out “Howdy.” Upstairs, there are three large bedrooms, a sitting area and a beautiful full bath.

The walk-out, finished lower level has an additional family room, an impressive gym, full bathroom, storage and an attached one-car garage. The basement floors are covered with Saddleback LVP flooring and the bar’s backsplash is decorated with penny tiles, lighted by a reclaimed wood light fixture. Lighting, rugs, mirrors and furniture are outfitted by Reflections of You, By Amy.

“Everyone was extremely pleased with the final product,” Amy says.

“Their home is absolutely stunning! I have to say, it’s definitely one of my most favorite designs. We are always thankful for our clients trusting in us to guide them through the design process, no matter how large or small it may be.”

DECOR

Interior design has become a home to the creativeinspired. Simple walls and white furniture have become a thing of the past and DIY-ified looks are taking over. There are many ways to give your home a facelift without breaking the bank. Here are a few ideas to try in your own home this summer...

TIPS Photo credit: The Page Edit

Wall molding designs are becoming a fan-favorite project as they can completely transfrom a room. Talk about the look of luxury for less!

Everything from board & batten, picture frame molding and wainscoting, can be created to achieve a more upscale, modern look in any room.

Designs like shiplap that we all know and love can be extremely expensive as one shiplap board can cost upwards of $5/ea. DIY options such as simple plywood sheets cost around $30 and you can get 6-8 shiplap boards out of it. Sounds much better doesn’t it?

Map out the look you’re wanting to achieve with painters tape to get the overall look as well as correct measurements before you begin.

Furthermore, create a drawing of your plan with the final measurements that you can refer back to while working. Purchase a few extra pieces of molding/framing just in case. Once you get into cutting and working you never know if something might come up short.

Use a spacer - as much as you trust your eye and even your tape guide, using a physical piece to space each section/box will guarantee correct spacing throughout your design. Nail the corners/outer edges first, step back, and make sure everything looks centered and accurate before nailing the entire piece down. Just in case you need to tweak, you won’t have to remove all of the nails, only a few!

Have an old antique piece of furniture that you don’t know where to put? Don’t throw it out! All she needs is a little sanding, fresh stain or paint and a new set of hardware and... BAM. Brand new piece!

There are many ways you can DIY that beloved dresser or kitchen table. You can change the stain or strip to it’s original finish or even add a fun pop of paint.

Here are some tips and tricks to be sure you follow when approaching any restoration project:

Invest in a great sander. This is the most important tool you’ll have in your toolbox. Anytime you’re changing up any piece of furniture it most likely will need to be sanded down for either cleaning or smoothing edges.

When working on the legs of a piece of furniture you need to lift it off the ground to access them. You’ll need something sturdy for support. This can range from a block of wood to painter’s tripods.

The best bleaching product you can use on wood is your simple household bleach and good ol’fashioned sunshine. When working on veneer-covered furniture, be sure to use a paint stripper to remove the paint easily and lightly sand afterwards. If you try to just sand off the paint you can risk damaging the veneer underneath, which you don’t want!

Add a router table to your DIY arsenal - these are great to use for adding additional details onto doors and drawers.

Who doesn’t love an accent wall?

Sometimes a room needs a little oomph to take it to the next level, but you don’t want to overdo it! Creating a fun accent wall in a pattern or pop of color is an easy switch-up to really elevate any room.

Wallpaper has always been a go-to for this type of facelift, however it can be extremely pricey.

Stenciling is a great way to achieve the same look for sometimes more than half the cost!

Here are some tips for creating your own statement wall:

Before you begin, you MUST offload the majority of your paint onto a paper towel. The paper towel should be covered in paint by the time you are done. This prevents any excess paint ruining those crisp lines you’re wanting to achieve.

Anytime you move your stencil you’ll want to re-secure it with painters tape. Don’t trust yourself to hold it while painting. You don’t want to risk it moving which can mess up your pattern moving forward.

Wipe off the back of your stencil before moving onto the next section in case there is any wet paint on the edging. You don’t want to transfer paint onto any dried parts you’ve previously painted. Clare Miller Home

Clare Miller graduated from the University of Kentucky’s School of Interiors in 2015; she began her career in the high-end residential furniture industry that same year. She founded Clare Miller Home in the summer of 2019 and opened their flagship location in Louisville the following year.

Well known for her refined, transitional style, Clare injects her layered designs with texture and subtle touches of color. She believes that there is value in form and function and strives to ensure that the furnishings and decor selected in each individual project align with her client’s tastes and lifestyles. In addition to being the owner, she serves as the principal designer.

The Clare Miller Home showroom in Chenoweth Plaza offers a carefully curated selection of furniture, artwork, pillows and home accessories – whether you wish to purchase something that day or customize the exact piece you are envisioning for your space. In addition to walk-in clients, they specialize in working with trade partners like builders and fellow interior designers.

“The Norton Children’s Raffle House is a project we are proud to have worked on the last 4 years consecutively,” Clare says. She worked alongside the builder, David Ramage of The Ramage Company, and his in-house designer, Amanda Stubblefield. Together they selected the lighting, furniture, rugs and artwork for this project.

“On a project like this where we have tighter installation parameters, it was important for us to select and manage items that were in stock or made to order in a timely manner. The Norton Children’s Raffle House is a really collaborative project. It’s the result of connecting local industry leaders and working alongside each other to bring the best possible design outcome.”

Clare adds, “When we start these projects, there is not an owner yet, which means we can really flex our creativity and show the possibilities that can result from putting your trust in your designer. We loved that this space felt livable as soon as you walked through the front door and the flow made sense for a lot of lifestyles. The pieces we used felt collected over time, which was another win for us.”

Steinbock Interior Design Group

Lisa Steinbock, ASID has 28 years of experience in interior design and remodeling. Since 1995, the team at Steinbock Interiors has been offering custom interior design for commercial and residential properties in the greater Louisville area. Lisa’s passion for superior quality and innovative design is evident in every project she and her team handle.

For this project, Steinbock Interior Design Group was involved throughout the entire process, from planning and selection of finishes to the execution as a whole – including the remodeling work. “We completely redesigned the layout of this room,” Lisa says.

“My client likes a bit of rustic charm and wanted the bathroom to reflect that,” she explains. “She also wanted a bit of a feminine touch to it.”

To achieve their client’s goals, Steinbock selected tile with an aged look and paired it with all-black fixtures to complement the tile and custom cabinetry that they built and installed. They added “a little bling” to the cabinet hardware and selected paint colors and décor to help soften the look.

Myers + Co. specializes in high-end residential design and build projects in the Louisville area. “We take a creative approach with every project through a multi-step design process. We collaborate with select contractors and artisans to ensure the finished product meets our client’s expectations and the intended design objectives,” explains Josh Myers, PLA, ASLA, APLD, owner and landscape architect with Myers + Co.

With over 25 years of experience in the landscaping industry, Josh has won several national and local awards for his work. Josh has a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois and is a registered Landscape Architect in Kentucky. Josh is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

Landscape is Josh’s passion. Designing and creating beautiful outdoor spaces for clients is what motivates him to constantly hone his craft as a landscape architect and designer. His detailed, hands-on approach ensures exceptional quality in all phases of work. He is also a dedicated family man; since 2010, Josh and his wife Kristen have called Louisville home to be closer to extended family and raise their three daughters, Elise, Anna and Grace.

For this project in the Estates of Hunting Creek in Prospect, Myers + Co. designed the covered patio, outdoor living space and landscape. They managed the construction from

start to finish. “Our client’s vision for the project was to create a covered patio space that was a natural extension of the home with custom architectural details,” Josh recalls. “We collaborated closely with the client throughout the construction process to ensure their vision was achieved.”

The client provided inspiration photos and overall objectives for the project. From that, the Myers + Co. team developed a schematic design plan for the spaces, followed by realistic 3D renderings of the design to help the clients envision the finished outdoor area. They managed the construction process with their team of contractors to create the stunning results below.

One of Josh’s favorite aspects of the project was the stucco fireplace with limestone details; it serves as the focal point and gathering space for the covered patio. He also appreciates the custom built-in grill and kitchen area, which anchors a lower patio space left of the covered patio. The custom gas fire pit and seat wall offer a relaxing retreat on the right side of the covered patio. Myers + Co. projects have a wide-ranging scope of work, regardless of the size or need. Their projects often include hardscape elements, architectural features and buildings, landscape, water features, pools, landscape lighting and more. They provide creative and cost-effective design solutions that capture the essence of their surroundings. project photos by Tim Furlong, Jr.

Flo rFro

If you love fresh flowers in your home, flower frogs are your best friend – and no, we’re not talkin’ about Kermit! Flower frogs are a vintage item that is seeing a well-deserved renaissance, and we’ll help you hop on this throwback trend.

HOME

Fanyone unfamiliar, flower frogs are items you use to stabilize flowers inside an arrangement in lieu of icky foam or fussy wire. You’ve probably seen them in antique shops or flea markets and wondered what the heck you were looking at! They’re generally round, flat discs with multiple holes, often made of glass or pottery. Some are a “pincushion” style with wires poking upward. All of them allow you to create a lush, beautiful floral arrangement –even in a container with a wider mouth that might not otherwise hold the stems upright, such as an urn.

The oldest flower frogs date back to the fourteenth century in Japan, used in the art of ikebana, or flower arranging. They were extremely popular here from the 1880s until the 1940s. Your grandmother or great-grandmother certainly used these wonderful items to make her home more beautiful and welcoming.

Like many vintage items, antique flower frogs are very collectible. Many flower frogs are decorative, especially those produced during the Art Deco era; artisans fashioned flower frogs into dancing ladies, turtles, fountains, dolphins and more, using porcelain, silver, colorful glass or even lead. If you’re curious about collecting, check out Flower Frogs for Collectors by Bonnie Bull, or search online for guides.

Even if you don’t have grandma’s flower frog, you can get frogging today! You could peruse antique stores to find a vintage frog, or check out local makers’ markets. Craft stores will certainly have them in stock. There are dozens of frogs available online, as well; Etsy is a great place to find handcrafted frogs, but of course you’ll find them on Amazon.

How U aFlo r Frog

pin style

Sometimes called a kenzan, these frogs have shorter, sharp spikes. These are ideal for tight, precise arrangements. Optionally, you can add floral putty to the bottom of this frog. Carefully press the frog into the bottom of your vase. Add just enough water to cover the frog. Press large stems onto the spikes. Thin stems can be supported in between. Tip: cut stems at an angle!

hairpin style

These frogs have longer wire loops and are ideal for larger, lush arrangements. You can optionally add floral putty to the bottom of this frog. Press into the bottom of your vase, and add water. Cut stems at an angle, then arrange between the pins or slip into the loops.

cla ic style

These frogs are flat or domed with holes. Clear glass ones are ideal for clear vases where another frog might be unsightly. In general, these are great for large blooms, as there are fewer spots for placing stems. Place the frog in the bottom of your vessel and fill with water. Place stems in each hole; we suggest working from the outside in. Tuck smaller stems in between the large blooms. You can also find some that are designed to sit atop mason jars, which is a fun option that makes the frog a decorative part of the arrangement (seen here).

Making your own frog is fairly simple! Use floral or washi tape to make a grid on the top of your vase and use those holes to arrange your flowers. Or take a hint from The Boys at House: chicken wire makes the perfect faux frog for containers of any size!

5 Common Myths About Your Roof

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Your home is your largest investment. Replacing your roof is an extremely important part of protecting your home. The thought of going through a roof replacement is overwhelming to most homeowners. It is an expensive undertaking that requires many decisions to be made.

Unfortunately, the roofing industry as a whole is not known for transparency. At AIC Roofing we take great pride in doing things differently. As part of our effort to provide you with unmatched customer service before, during, and after your roof replacement, today we’ll be outlining the most common roofing myths. With this knowledge, you can confidently interview roofing contractors and make the best decisions for your home.

Myth #1: My new roof can be installed over my old roof

Roof replacements are one of the most expensive components of a home that homeowners may have to replace. Understandably, some homeowners may explore less costly alternatives. A roof replacement is a complete tear-off (down to the decking) of a roof and installing new underlayment, deck protection, and roofing material (shingles, metal, tile, slate, etc.). An overlay is when new shingles are installed on top of the existing roof – old shingles are not removed.

We strongly recommend total roof replacements in every situation. Some companies (AIC Roofing included) will not even offer overlays as part of their options. If you are considering an overlay keep in mind that if a roof with two or more layers needs to be repaired, finding a qualified contractor to work on it can be difficult. Most contractors either will not work on multi-layer roofs, or if they do, they will not provide any warranty on their work. This is due to the inability to accurately diagnose all of the potential issues that are created by the multiple layers. Water can travel between the layers creating misdirection as to the leaks’ actual source, making these leaks difficult and expensive to solve.

One more thing to consider regarding overlays is lifespan. On average, a new roof that is installed as an overlay only lasts about half of the lifespan of a roof that is installed after the old roof is torn off. This means that if you are planning on staying in your home, your next roof replacement could come much sooner than you would expect.

Myth #2: A roof only needs replaced if it’s leaking

By the time a roof starts leaking, your home may already have serious damage that could have been avoided with proper maintenance or timely replacement.

However, a roof leak does not necessarily mean it’s time for a replacement. A roof leak could result from a small, repairable issue or it could be a symptom of a larger problem. To extend the life of your roof for as long as possible, we recommend an annual roof inspection. This will help catch any of the small reasons for a leak.

The typical asphalt roof lasts for 20-25 years. Over time, the elements will break down your shingles. Even if a roof isn’t leaking, it may still need to be replaced to ensure your home is properly protected.

Myth #3: Darker shingles result in higher energy costs

Don’t let this myth keep you from installing the charcoal roof of your dreams. Dark colored shingles will absorb more sunlight compared

with lighter colored shingles. However, this will not make a tangible difference in your energy costs.

Your attic insulation and proper installation of your roofing ventilation are critical to regulating the temperature of your roof and home – not your shingle color. Roofing ventilation is extremely important to ensuring your roof does not experience dry rot that will compromise the structural integrity of your home and roof deck.

Myth #4: Roof replacements don’t have a high return on investment

Replacing your roof is a big undertaking. It is an expensive project and requires many decisions to be made. Understandably, many homeowners worry about their return on investment when it comes to their roof replacement. According to the 2022 National Association of Realtors Research Group, new roofing was one of only two exterior home projects that yielded an astounding 100% cost recovery for homeowners. This is because home buyers value the critical protection and curb appeal offered by your roof. Roof replacements can feel stressful, but rest assured knowing you’re making a smart investment in your home.

The excellent return on investment is another reason to stop putting off your roof replacement. The damage that could be caused by a neglected roof can needlessly snowball into thousands of dollars. Similarly, metal accent roofs are a great way to add no maintenance curb appeal to your home. At a comparable price to landscaping, the 100% cost recovery associated with new roofing comes with no expensive upkeep and will last for decades to come.

Myth #5: All roofing contractors are the same

This is absolutely not the case. Not all roofing contractors are the same; some may be inexperienced, lack proper insurance or licenses, or use substandard materials.

Every roofing contractor will have to obtain licenses and insurance policies required by their specific city

and state (although some may skip this step entirely!). In addition to these policies and licenses, roofing contractors can earn various mastery certifications. These certifications are typically awarded by roofing material manufacturers if the contractor meets certain requirements. Top-tier certificates can take years, and hundreds of hours to earn.

GAF is North America’s #1 shingle manufacturer, there are three levels of accreditations in their certification program. Those three levels are Authorized, Certified, and MasterElite, with the latter being their top tier credential. In total, the MasterElite certification is the highest recognition offered by GAF, and only 2% of roofing contractors are invited to become GAF MasterElite certified.

In order to receive this certification, a roofing contractor must have been in business for a minimum of seven years, participate in yearly training, undergo periodic inspections of their work, and be in good standing with organizations such as the Better Business Bureau.

At AIC Roofing & Construction, we proudly hold GAF’s highest certification, the MasterElite level. With this comes additional warranties, and services levels that are unavailable to other contractors. With our MasterElite certification, AIC can offer the Golden Pledge warranty which includes a 25-year workmanship warranty from GAF, this is a best-in-class warranty!

The Truth: Roof Maintenance Helps Prevent Issues

To keep your roof in tip top shape and catch issues before they wrack up thousands in damages, we recommend annual roof inspections. Roof inspections are free and the most preventative measure you can take for extending the life of your roof. Unfortunately, the roofing industry does not offer much insight when it comes to pricing and other critical information. We want to change that. Our online Learning Center has answers to all your roofing questions to help you make an informed, confident decision about this important investment.

AIC Roofing and Construction has served homeowners in Louisville, Lexington and Richmond since 2003. We are in the top 2% of roofing contractors in North America to obtain the GAF MasterElite certification. If you’re looking for a top-rated Lexington roofing company – we’d love to see if we would be a good fit for your project. Contact us today to schedule your free roof inspection! •

YOUR GUIDE TO THE perfect CONTAINER GARDEN

Do you find yourself looking at a corner of your home or outdoor patio and think, “what could I possibly put there?” Container gardens are becoming an easy solution and we’re loving them!

For you plant lovers out there, grab a cluster of your favorite containers (not pots... we’ll explain) and get creative with arrangements of flowers or vegetables to build beautiful corners in and out of your home.

Container gardens can be hung from the rafters, suspended on hooks, mounted on walls, stacked up steps... the list goes on and on. For those small spaces and nooks and cranies, you can create a garden anywhere.

Is a garden container the same as a flower pot?

Short answer is no.

Flower pots are usually smaller, whereas garden containers are larger and designed for better drainage.

There are also some pots that aren’t weather-safe, which can quickly kill your plants.

Get creative with your container selection to make a really unique container garden. Whether it’s in your back patio sanctuary or adorning your front porch, choose containers of different sizes, heights and colors for a one-of-a-kind display.

new trend

A popular trend in gardening is raised garden beds. These statement pieces offer so many benefits to your seasonal gardening while adding a beautiful decor element to your home. Raised garden beds tend to be more productive than your normal inground gardening because they allow the soil to be less compact therefore creating better drainage of water.

You will see your plants start to grow much earlier with raised garden beds. The plants are exposed to the warmth earlier in raised soil rather than in the ground, so you’ll have much more time to plant all of your favorites as soon as the spring sun arrives!

Who doesn’t love a fun DIY project? Raised garden beds are a great project for the whole family to build, fill and watch grow, plus they are the perfect accent piece for your back patio! Other perks?

Your back will thank you. We all know we’re getting older and the thought of having to stay bent over for long periods of time just to plant our precious tomatoes doesn’t sound as enjoyable as it used to.

Your plants will thank you. Not only are they perked up nice and pretty for everyone to see, they won’t be getting any visits from the little critters who enjoy your veggies as much as you do!

Kimberly Greenwell, owner and host of the television show “My Southern Home,” has created a niche for herself as the go-to person for home education and inspiration.

Greenwell created the television show in August 2017. A few years later, she is a nationally recognized home expert quoted in Martha Stewart, MindBodyGreen, Real Simple Magazine, The Spruce, and U.S. News & World Report.

From paint colors to fireplace screens to spa-like baths, local and national publications seek advice and the latest trends from Greenwell.

“I love educating and inspiring homeowners to create their dream spaces. No matter how large or small your space is, it is important to make it your own!” says Greenwell.

Greenwell’s passion for educating homeowners lead to her launching My Southern Home University. My Southern Home University allows homeowners to learn straight from the experts in a classroomlike setting.

“As a homeowner, when you start planning your kitchen remodel, your immediate thoughts usually go to the aesthetics—the color of the cabinets, the countertops, the backsplash. You may not consider the space’s flow, function, and organization. That is what My Southern Home University does for you! It gives you the ability to look at a remodel differently and, most importantly, it gives you the knowledge to hire the right contractor,” states Greenwell.

Greenwell’s television show, “My Southern Home,” airs every Sunday at 10 a.m. on WBKI- CW 58. You can watch past segments of her show, read the home-related articles she is part of, and see a list of upcoming My Southern Home University classes on her website, mysouthernhometv.com

The woodworking business has been a part of the owner’s family for over 120 years. Southern Vintage is a premier source for reclaimed wood locally and across the US. John and Jessica Allgeier run the business together with their children out of their family farm in Louisville. Employing expert woodworking techniques that have been passed down for generations, their handcrafted custom reclaimed wood flooring is made with a legacy of tradition.

John can trace the origins of his passion for woodworking back to his childhood when he would sit in his grandfather’s basement and watch as the elder Allgeier tooled about, crafting oneof-a-kind furniture for family members. After college, John turned his love for woodworking towards reclaimed wood, perfecting the sanding and finishing process to create some of the most sought-after flooring textures today. He and Jessica even coined the term “saw-struck,” where each plank is individually run through a saw to add unique markings and create a perfectly imperfect rustic texture and vintage feel.

Today, Southern Vintage’s product line includes reclaimed wood flooring, beams, paneling, cabinets, and live edge tables and countertops, as well as traditional milled flooring, stone veneer, and more. Each nail hole, grain pattern, and texture tells the story of its former life.

As a family-owned company, Southern Vintage controls every step of the process, from sourcing and milling to grading, textures, and finishes. Clients always receive unparalleled control over the customization process.

Eco-friendly materials are one of the biggest trends in interior design right now. That said, not just any reclaimed material can be used in flooring. Built-ins make the perfect bar cabinet. If yours have been storing books you never read and knick-knacks you don’t love, we fully advocate for you to make this switch! Converting a set of built-ins to serve as a bar couldn’t be simpler. You may wish to install a wine rack and tracks for storing glassware (as seen here). Consider the placement of your shelves and adjust as necessary to accommodate your bottles. We also recommend painting surfaces with a gloss paint for easier cleaning – if you like red wine, consider going with a darker color to hide any spills.

All that’s left to do? Get mixing!

If you don’t have built-ins, you can often achieve the look by carefully placing flatpack bookcases. Use moulding or trim to help the bookcases blend more seamlessly into your space.

Both of the ideas pictured here bring the bar to you. Existing armchairs get a cocktail table or cart, transforming an otherwise unused space into something fabulous. Most of us have an accent table that never gets used – but which we have to dust nonetheless. What if you transformed that underutilized surface into a miniature bar? Likewise, that armchair no one ever seems to sit in could become your new “me time” spot.

Pickleball!

The fastest-growing sport in America is anything but silly.

A cross between ping pong, badminton, and tennis, pickleball is a fun, easy-to-learn game that can be enjoyed well by players of any age. Even though it was invented in 1965, pickleball participation has grown an average of 158.6% over the last three years, with just over 10,000 pickleball courts in the United States!

With an estimated 36.5 million pickleball players in the US, we’re sure at least a few of you readers are ready to play! Luckily, Louisville is the most popular place in Kentucky to play pickleball, with 20 courts all over the city. Pickleheads, an online destination founded by experienced entrepreneur Brandon Mackie, is the perfect platform to find courts in Louisville, organize sessions with friends, and connect with local players.

While you can play pickleball independently, Pickleheads makes it a snap to connect and socialize with other Louisvillians – potentially leaving you with new lifelong friends. “Pickleball is a social activity as much as it’s a sport,” says Brandon Mackie. “It’s commonly played in an open-play format where 50 or even more players show up and rotate games and partners. You also almost always play pickleball as doubles, which leaves many opportunities to socialize and meet players.”

Pickleball may be a bit of a pickle to master (excuse our puns), but even beginners tend to pick the game up quickly and keep coming back for more. “Pickleball’s popularity exploded during the pandemic, when many Americans were looking for responsible ways to socialize and stay active. But that was only the beginning – pickleball’s growth has continued even as lockdowns have ended and normal life has resumed,” explains co-founder Brandon.

If you’re ready to pick up the paddle and play some ball, you can join the Derby City Pickleball Club. Its scheduled social events throughout the year, coordinated men’s and ladies’ leagues, and organized tournaments welcome players from all over the area.

Not quite sure where to start? Visit the Pickleheads website to learn more about the sport, find courts in Louisville, and find other pickleball friends!

NUTRITION FACTS: UNDERSTANDING THE NUTRITION FOOD LABEL

Many of us are on the go. Spending a lot of time at the grocery may not be the most favorable part of your day. As you grab your products, are you aware of what you are tossing in your cart? Try this: the next time you are at the store, take a minute, educate yourself, and turn over that can or container. The information on the back will inform you of the nutrients you may or may not be consuming.

Nutrition fact labels are there to help the consumers make quick, informed food decisions to help choose a healthy product.

SERVING SIZE - Serving size is the servings per container, (cups or pieces), followed by the metric amount. The serving size typically reflects the amount that people eat or drink. If you double the recommended serving size, you will be consuming two servings. It is recommended to stick to the recommended serving size to maintain a healthy weight.

CALORIES - Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a serving of food. Calories listed on a food label indicate how many calories are in one serving.

1 gram of carbohydrates is 4 calories. 1 gram of protein is 4 calories, and 1 gram of fat contains 9 calories. On average, adult females need anywhere from 1600-2400 calories a day and adult males need 2000-3000 a day, according to Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Research indicates that 3500 calories of energy burns a pound of fat. Reducing the number of unhealthy calories a day can result in weight loss. Maintaining a healthy weight consists of regular exercise daily and foods that are healthy for your body.

NUTRIENTS - Total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, total sugars, added sugars (sugars that are added during the processing of foods such as sucrose or dextrose), protein, vitamin D, calcium, Iron, and potassium are just some of the nutrients listed on the back of a food box. It is imperative that your body receives good nutrients such as protein, vitamins, calcium, potassium, and iron. Keep trans and saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars at bay. Increases in overall cholesterol (LDL) can cause heart disease. Avoiding processed foods can help reduce the risk.

% DAILY VALUE - Daily value is the percentage of the daily value for each nutrient in a serving of food. These are expressed in grams, milligrams, or micrograms. The % shows how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to a total daily diet.

Amye Lewis, one of our amazing health educators in the HMR department at Baptist Milestone, gives us her advice on food labels. “I always recommend the first thing to do when wanting to know more about your food is read the label. Find out what the serving size is and how many servings are contained in the package. For example, Serving size: 1/4 cup. Servings per container: 17. Most labels list nutrition information by serving. For example, Calories = 120 per serving. Then look at the list

of ingredients. The first 3 ingredients listed is what that particular product contains the most of. For example, Whole Grain Oats, Sugar, Canola Oil. We know from this listing that this product is higher in sugar and oil per serving because it is listed in the top 3 ingredients. Plus the serving size is on the smaller side for the amount of calories it contains. Would you be satisfied with having one serving of this product?”

Make healthy choices at your next grocery trip. Here is an example of a grocery list that is packed with antioxidants, protein and fiber. Fueling your body with rich nutrients will boost all the feel goods to your body!

Hundreds of people decked out from head to toe in red are expected to gather on May 19, 2023, at Louisville’s annual Go Red for Women Luncheon to raise awareness and help fund the fight against heart disease and stroke, which claim the lives of 1 in 3 women.

The Go Red for Women Luncheon is one of the nation’s premier events for the American Heart Association, devoted to a world of healthier lives for all, and the signature fundraising event for its Go Red for Women movement, which harnesses the energy, passion and power of women to improve their health, and in turn, support their families and communities.

Women, especially Black and Hispanic women are disproportionally impacted by heart disease and stroke and research shows heart attacks are on the rise in younger women. Yet, younger generations of women, Gen Z and Millennials, are less likely to be aware of their greatest health threat, including knowing the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. That’s why it’s important for all women to take charge of their heart health and encourage others to do the same.

“The work of the American Heart Association to advance health equity and advocate for research and education about women’s heart health is incredibly important and personal to me,” said Paige Mankovich, Go Red for Women chair and CEO of Aetna Better Health of Kentucky. “Your investment and attendance will not only help us create an unforgettable experience but will help us move the mission forward to a healthier future for women everywhere.”

Guests will rally at the heart-healthy event to raise funds to help advance women’s health through research, education, awareness and advocacy initiatives.

Go Red for Women is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and Aetna and locally sponsored by Baptist Health. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit heart.org/louisvillegored.

Remembering Cpl. Charlie A. Smith

There are countless stories about military service and sacrifice that go unnoticed every year, especially those related to our Vietnam Veterans. Every year we engage in ceremonies to try and make peace with the past, peace with what our country did and did not do for those who came home to an unwelcoming nation. For those of us who have a direct connection to a Vietnam Veteran, our stories are still relevant, and for those who served, the scars are still present.

Here in Kentucky, we still have nearly 100,000 veterans of the Vietnam War and countless family members who know all too well the price of freedom. For many, the greatest purpose for ceremonies is to remember those forgotten stories of courage and sacrifice of those who were silenced in the line of battle. One of those stories to remember is of Louisville native Charlie Allan Smith, who attended Western High School and was born into a military family

with a father who had been a WWII pilot. He also had several siblings, including Gaynell Zirnheld.

“Charlie was the kindest soul,” stated Gaynell. “I was only 14 when Charlie was killed in action. We used to horseback ride and hunt together. When he left for Vietnam he distributed a lot of his things to family and friends, almost like he knew he wasn’t coming back.”

Charlie was drafted into the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He served with Kilo Company in the 3rd battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marines Division III MAF in the United States Marine Corps. He was a Corporal. Charlie was killed in action on February 28, 1968, and his name is located on panel 41E, Line 73 of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC.

“I’ve been told that Charlie had a sinking feeling that he would not survive that day,” remembers Gaynell.

“This article is dedicated to Charlie’s family and my father, Ronnie French, who served with Charlie in Vietnam.”

Official Statt:

On 28 February 1968, the 2nd platoon, Kilo Company, under the command of SSgt Haywood Riley, was on a reconnaissance mission in the vicinity of the hamlet of Nhi Ha. It was known that the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) was still crossing the DMZ and moving south toward Hue City. It was Tet and on 31 January 1968, the NVA had attacked various positions in the South with 70,000 enemy soldiers. During that time, the battalion had been one of the few Marine units between the DMZ and Hue and had been fighting the NVA almost every day. The 2nd platoon made contact with the NVA as they neared Nhi Ha and the battle began. During the Nhi Ha battle one of the best squad leaders in the battalion, Corporal Charles Allan Smith, was killed.

“According to one of his men, he was offered the chance to stay back and not walk point, but he wouldn’t neglect his responsibility. That’s when he came upon the NVA and was killed. He had just turned 20 years old on February 22nd a few days before he died.”

Charlie left behind a wife and newborn son, Charlie Smith, Jr. He also left behind friends and fellow members of his platoon who gather each year to honor, remember and pay tribute to their own. Gaynell often goes to those reunions to be close to her brother. “When I am with those Marines that served with Charlie, they know the story, and they were with him in those horrendous battles,” she says. “That’s when I just feel so close to him.”

This Memorial Day, find a way to honor and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice like Cpl. Charlie Smith and share their stories for future generations to understand the price of freedom. “If you tell a story about the past, then it becomes the present, and when it’s told again in the future, it just keeps it alive,” urges Gaynell. “It keeps their memory alive.” •

Bow Tied Togeth:

For the 2023 Bourbon With Heart Bow Tied Together art exhibit, Heather created a piece dedicated to Cpl. Charlie Smith and his sister. Gaynell sponsored it.

Heather French Henry, MDes. has been a local, state and national advocate for military veterans and their families for over 20 years.

Blessings in a Backpack

“You’d be surprised how many kids in Louisville go hungry on a regular basis,” says Kim Holsclaw, Managing Director of the Louisville Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack. Almost 80,000 JCPS students qualify for Blessings in a Backpack and the federal free and reduced lunch program. Blessings in a Backpack was founded right here in Louisville in 2005 after Melissa “Missy” Hammerstrom visited a Louisville elementary school for a community project. Missy was eating lunch when a little girl asked if she could have her apple to take home so she would have something to eat that weekend.

Missy had to do something. She bought backpacks and food, packed them in her garage, and donated them to the school. Blessings in a Backpack began with one program serving 50 kids and became a national 501(c)3

nonprofit organization in 2008. Missy served on the Blessings’ National Board of Directors and passed away in 2010. Blessings in a Backpack now serves 47 states and Washington, D.C.

Blessings in a Backpack Louisville Chapter feeds over 6,700 kids every weekend through 53 JCPS schools. According to Kim Holsclaw, “We bag food every Friday for kids to take home over the weekend so that they can return to school on Monday sustained and ready to learn.” Holsclaw and her team spend their summers writing grants and prepping for the next school year because there are now many other summer feeding programs.

Holsclaw transformed what she calls a “previously looselyformed committee of employees and community members

who did a great job with what they had.” While still new to the position, she was faced with a list of 15 schools the chapter might have to turn down at the winter break. Holsclaw and team managed to feed those kids and even bank a little money. Since then, the chapter has expanded grant writing and fundraising and grown the advisory board to 18 members dedicating their time and talents to the cause.

Holsclaw shepherded the chapter through the COVID-19 pandemic, which canceled all their fundraising events and shut down schools. Through donations and grants from the city of Louisville and other hunger organizations, Blessings in a Backpack Louisville continued to feed students alongside JCPS food distribution. “We now have money in the bank and welldeveloped events. We are feeding more kids than ever - 2,600 additional kids.” Holsclaw recently helped the chapter secure a record number of volunteer packing events with several notable Louisville companies.

On March 11, 2023, renowned Food Network celebrity chefs Darnell “Superchef” Ferguson, Damaris Phillips, and Best Baker in America winner Jackie Joseph prepared courses for a worldclass dinner as part of Pack the Sack - the Louisville Chapter’s largest annual fundraiser. Superchef recently mentored Season 25 of Worst Cooks in America with Chef Anne Burrell and is now hosting his series Superchef Grudge Match on Food Network. Blessings in a Backpack has also attracted star power from the likes of Jennifer Garner and Lamar Jackson.

Blessings in a Backpack Louisville Chapter offers sponsorship opportunities for upcoming events such as the annual golf scramble at Wildwood Country Club on August 11 and the youth board’s .5K later in the year. Donations, volunteers, and grants are appreciated year-round, as the organization receives no government funding. “It costs $130 to feed a child for an entire school year,” says Holsclaw. “Every dollar stays in Louisville - 100%.” For more information: louisville.blessingsinabackpack.org.
