onJanuary 2, Craig Greenberg, a proud Louisvillian, was sworn in as the city’s 51st mayor. Greenberg is a graduate of Jefferson County Public Schools, the University of Michigan, and Harvard Law School and is now a husband to Rachel, father to Daniel and Benjamin, an attorney and entrepreneur.
Craig has major plans for Louisville during his tenure, including cleaning up the streets, buffing up education and attracting local businesses and entertainment to the area. Keith Yarber, owner of Top Marketing Group, sat down with the former member of the University of Louisville Board of Trustees, for an up-close-and-personal interview about Craig’s personal life and vision for the future of the city he loves.
Get to know Craig: mayor, runner and family man.
TOPS: You had a major press conference today. Can you tell us about the major announcement?
Mayor Craig Greenberg: Our top priority is reducing the amount of gun violence in our city, and we are focused on doing everything we possibly can: short-term solutions, long-term solutions, little things and big things to reduce the amount of gun violence in our community. Today’s announcement was just part of the effort.
So under Kentucky law right now, confiscated guns that have been used to commit a crime are required to be sent to the Kentucky State Police who are required to auction them off. And those guns have ended up back on the streets to commit second crimes. I think that is dangerous and absurd. This plan will render guns from Jefferson County inoperable before turning them over to the state. We also proposed legislation to change the state laws so that we could permanently destroy guns that have been used to commit crimes. If this can save just one life, it was worth it. With this plan, we are removing firing pins before turning them over to the state, and that’s unfortunately as far as we can go under state law right now.
I think it’s important that people advocate for change and hopefully, this will make an impact. It will also be the beginning of more things that we can do to improve public safety and Louisville.
You know this better than anyone. How did your attempted assassination affect you to this day?
It’s a year later from when that happened, and I still don’t know how or why I survived. I consider myself extremely fortunate to still be here, sure. Even if I don’t know how or why, I know what I’m going to do, and that’s everything possible to reduce the amount of gun violence in our city. To me, that is my calling in life, and that is what I’m focused on as my top priority as mayor, along with all of the other things that we need to do to move Louisville in a new direction.
Backing up a bit, what was the tipping point when you decided you needed to run for mayor?
There wasn’t one particular thing I think it was–I have always loved Louisville, and I’ve always wanted to give back to Louisville, professionally, personally and civically. I’ve tried to be an engaged citizen who makes our city a better place. That’s why I wanted to serve on the University of Louisville Board of Trustees and why my wife and I have been involved in other charitable endeavors over the course of the past 20 years, because we love Louisville.
I started thinking several years ago about where we were as a city and where we could go, and I thought the city was getting a little complacent. I really wanted to try to spur more activity and encourage more smart growth and to create an even more vibrant, healthier, energetic and exciting city for today and tomorrow.
Well, you’ve certainly brought some new energy and excitement. When we met last week, you told me that this was one of the most intellectually stimulating jobs. Can you talk a little about that?
I’m only weeks in right now, and it is without a doubt the most intellectually stimulating, challenging and exciting thing that I have ever been a part of–I’m loving every second of it. I’m spending almost every waking hour working as mayor but taking a little time to run and definitely taking some time for my family. Beyond that, every minute is spent on this, but I love it.
I am really energized by the opportunity to work with the 5,000 people that are part of the Metro government who are involved in public service for the right reasons. We are trying to move the ball forward.
What is your vision for Louisville?
What I want for Louisville is what I think most people want. I want a safe city. I want one that is clean, green and healthy. I want a city that is vibrant and energetic where there are a lot of interesting things for people of all ages
March 2023 | TOPS 17
and backgrounds to do. I want a diverse city where people come from different backgrounds, different parts of the world and come together to really create magic. I want it to be a city of authentic, unique experiences.
Whether it’s our parks, bourbon, culture, arts and entertainment or sports, Louisville has so much about it that’s wonderfully unique. We need to support those wonderfully unique attributes and to continue to create new, authentically-unique experiences.
Can you tell us about downtown and how it is going to be more safe?
We have a lot to do downtown, and we were on a great trajectory before the pandemic. Downtown is certainly a different place, but it’s still an amazing place. On the weekends, there are people coming from all over the country to downtown Louisville to experience bourbon distilleries or to come for an event or a convention that’s here. My vision for downtown is a thriving, vibrant, green and energetic neighborhood where thousands of people live every day.
I want to work on attracting and creating thousands of more residential units downtown. At the same time, those people need more services like a real grocery store, more restaurants, and retail to create this wonderful neighborhood with great cultural and hospitality experiences. That, in turn, will make other people want to be down here. So, we’re really going to be focusing on that over the coming months. We know that downtown needs to be cleaner and people need to feel safe. We’re very focused on that and in the West End, as well.
What’s your plan for the West End?
The neighborhoods of West Louisville have been overlooked for our entire lifetime, and that has to change. We have an opportunity to invest in needed infrastructure and improvements so that the nine neighborhoods of West Louisville have the same quality of life that people in other parts of the city enjoy, whether that’s restaurants, coffee shops, clean alleys, sidewalks, trees and new schools. I want to thank JCPS for their commitment to that.
I’m excited about the new hospital and Goodwill campus that are being developed in West Louisville, but we really need to continue to invest in what the residents of West Louisville are clamoring for. We need to support other medical facilities, so that it’s easier to get primary care services or a dentist in West Louisville. These are all things that the residents of these neighborhoods deserve. And we’re working to make that happen.
Are there any priorities or initiatives that are important to you?
The one thing I want our administration to do is to make universal pre-K a reality for every 3-to-4-year-old child in Louisville. The research is clear: when kids start their education at an early age, they are far more likely to lead a safer and healthier life, as well as have more opportunities for success.
I want every child of Louisville to grow up with the hope and opportunity that will lead them to a life of safety, health and prosperity. Making universal pre-K a reality will be game-changing for the kids of Louisville and for our city as a whole. That should help the West End situation–we’re going to help take the kids that are born into poverty, and in particular, it’ll also help parents who, right now, have to make that impossible decision of sending their kids to childcare or having a job. That shouldn’t be a parent’s decision, and I’m so excited about this opportunity for kids and their parents.
You graduated from Leadership Louisville in 2004 with your Deputy Mayor Barbara Sexton Smith. How did she prepare you to be mayor?
Meeting Barbara has been wonderful. I’m so thrilled we’ve known each other for 20 years now. The opportunity to work with her as deputy mayor has been amazing; she’s a great citizen and public servant and has done so much for this community and continues to. I’m so fortunate to have her in the role of deputy mayor of our administration. One of the things I think I’ve learned is the importance of relationships. At the end of the day, people like to work with people who they like, people who get along with, people who they respect and trust, and who in turn, treat them with respect and who trust them. That’s always been important to me and what I’ve always tried to do and live by both in business and now in public life. Treat people well and get to know people and find areas of common ground. To me, that’s critically important, regardless of what political party somebody is from.
Sure, we all want a safer city, we all want our kids to have great education, and we all want to create more goodpaying careerpath jobs. While we might not agree on every solution, let’s find ways that we do agree on making them happen, and that happens through the power of relationships. I love getting to know people, and I continue to really enjoy getting to know people on the Metro Council and our representatives in the General Assembly. I’m excited about working with them regardless of party.

“my vision for downtown is a thriving, vibrant, een and energetic neighborh d where thousands of people live every day.”
Who is your mentor?
Well, I’ve been very fortunate to have several. I certainly learned a lot from my parents. They’ve had a significant, positive impact on my life. Politically, probably Jerry Abramson. I actually got interested in public service as a result of the former mayor when I was in eighth grade. My Hebrew school class went on a field trip to then relatively newly-elected Mayor Abramson’s office. His energy and excitement was contagious. That was in the late 1980s but I’ve known Jerry ever since then. He has taught me a lot, and I admire what he has done for our city and continues to do for our city. He really is a great model public servant.
Also, about 25 years ago, I met Jim Gray, who went on to become Mayor of Lexington and is now Secretary of Transportation. We have become very close friends over the years, and Jim has taught me a lot about life and business. He has had a tremendous career as a successful business entrepreneur and executive, so whether it’s about life, business or public service, Jim has made a positive impact on my life.
One other person I should mention is Steve Wilson. Jim introduced me to Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown (founders of 21c Museum Hotels) over 20 years ago and having the opportunity to work with Steve and Laura Lee was just an amazing 20-year adventure. Working with them to turn their dreams into reality really helped to push me as a person. I was there in a turning point in their time, and they pushed me to really think outside the box, to think creatively, to have big, bold dreams and then to make them happen. Just because other people don’t think something can happen, don’t let it stop you, and that is a lesson I really try to inspire in our team here in Metro Government.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people do not know?
I co-own Ohio Valley Wrestling and that’s been a lot of fun. Growing up, I was a big professional wrestling fan. We had some fun times as a family, my wife and I, with our boys, when they were a bit younger. And then, during the pandemic, when I thought about running for mayor, I came across Ohio Valley Wrestling on the TV one night and I just thought we could really help to move this organization forward–it’s an iconic Louisville institution. It’s one of the things that is authentically unique about Louisville.
I reached out to my friend, Matt Jones, who I think is one of the most brilliant marketers I know, as well as being amazing on the radio. He knows a lot about media, people
and communications. I knew he was an even bigger professional wrestling fan than me, so in partnership with him, my brother-in-law and some others, we bought a majority of Ohio Valley Wrestling, and we’re really working on moving that in the future.
You met your wife, Rachel, on a blind date?
That’s right. We met on a blind date in Boston. I was in law school and she was getting her master’s degree. A law school friend of mine was engaged to a friend of hers in her program.
I’m just thrilled that I was introduced to Rachel when I was; it all worked out.
What is a perfect date night with your wife?
I think it would be going to one of our favorite local restaurants just the two of us, which is not something we have the opportunity to do. We also love any time we can get outside, going on family walks with our dog at one of Louisville’s great parks. We did a lot of walks during COVID. You’re a runner, right? What’s on your running playlist?
I do that by myself, but I also really love running with my sons. I’m still trying to do that, you know, over the weekend. I am going to run the mini marathon this year, so I’m very excited for the 50th anniversary of the run. I’m training for that right now.
You know, I’ve gone through different phases in life, and I really don’t listen to a ton of music anymore. I had a country music phase for a while, and then for a good decade, I was just listening to whatever the kids wanted to listen to on the radio. I still love some of the music I listened to a long time ago in my life, whether that was Billy Joel or Garth Brooks. If I’m driving my 1974 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, I’ll probably have a little AC/DC or something in there. I listen to a lot more podcasts than I do music these days.
If you could sing a karaoke song, what would it be?
I haven’t done karaoke in a while but back in the day when I would occasionally do karaoke, my go-to song was “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers.
What is your all-time favorite movie or TV show?
I do have fun watching reality TV shows with my family. Every summer we watch Big Brother together, so that’s a guilty pleasure for us to do each summer–it’s sort of become a family tradition. I like to watch a lot of docuseries. These days, I’m not watching much; the only TV I’m watching is on a treadmill. •

let's do lunch!
In the business world, big things can happen over lunch. But in order to seal the deal, you first have to select the right setting. The perfect eatery for a business meeting should have three things: a broad menu, ambiance conducive to your business and a vibe that fits both you and your client. You want a menu with a lot of options to accommodate the tastes and dietary needs of your client or guests. Good ambiance for business includes a reasonable volume level, limited interruptions, seating that allows you to converse and spacious surfaces for any materials you may need to present. And the vibe? That’s a judgement call for you to make. If your client is on the stuffy side, a more reserved lunch spot would be appropriate. If they’re casual, fun-loving and free-spirited, go more casual. An upscale meal may impress some clients and alienate others. It’s a delicate balance. Need some local suggestions? We can help!

CALOAESTHETICS
LEADER IN :
Aesthetic Surgery
For those within the aesthetic surgery industry, Dr. Bradley Calobrace’s work is never hard to find. He regularly publishes articles and textbook material, lectures extensively around the world and serves on the faculties of the universities of Louisville and of Kentucky. While his focus on being an educator might be a bit old school, it’s something that has set him and his businesses, CaloAesthetics and the accompanying CaloSpa, apart in their field.
“I believe in today’s world, while surgeons are often self-credentialed and promoted through social media, I am a bit old fashioned,” Dr. Calobrace explained. “But I believe that the promotion of my work through educational leadership is more authentic.”
Dr. Calobrace’s leadership extends far beyond his role as a KOL and educator, into his surgical talent and beautiful patient results. After all, that’s why he is sought out by his peers and patients from around the world. From a young age, Dr. Calobrace felt inclined toward leadership roles and has cultivated a model for dynamic business growth that has clearly served CaloAesthetics.
“I have given a lecture entitled ‘Creating Financial Stability For Uncertain Times,’ and in that lecture I discuss the need to be cautious of debt load and trying not to over leverage your business or personal finances,” he explained. “Don’t spend money before you make it and try to pay down debt instead of taking all of the money out of your business. Of course, one usually has to create debt to scale and grow — just be cautious and expand slowly and deliberately.”
This philosophy has helped Dr. Calobrace’s business expand to serve numerous locations, all with its signature excellent care and customer convenience in mind. As he looks toward the future of his industry, Dr. Calobrace is prepared to keep his team at the forefront of growing opportunities.

That authenticity is apparent for anyone who has been a patient of CaloAesthetics, which has served the region with an unparalleled commitment to care for more than two decades.
“Excellence in service and in the treatments we provide have been our value proposition at CaloSpa and CaloAesthetics plastic surgery over the past 25 years,” said Dr. Calobrace.
Dr. Calobrace’s leadership goes beyond education for his colleagues and service for his clients. From a young age, he has felt naturally inclined toward leadership roles and has cultivated a model for dynamic business growth that has clearly served CaloAesthetics.

“The future is bright,” he concluded. “Aesthetic medicine is growing and more and more people have been able to enjoy the benefits of no-surgical and surgical aesthetic procedures. More effective no-surgical treatment will continue to emerge, toxins and fillers will continue to become safe and last longer and lasers and devices will actually provide benefits that even surgeries can’t. Surgeries will continue to be less invasive and highly effective.”

“I feel like we provide quality customer service and always go above and beyond for them,” reflected Melissa Huff, the store’s owner. “We love getting to know our customers and we welcome feedback on what they’d like us to carry in the store and hope they will continue to shop with us.”
Huff compares owning a business to raising children, explaining that you have to have a deeply-held passion for it, plan ahead, adapt to change and maintain a positive attitude throughout. And she lived that experience, opening the store just a week before COVID-19 forced months-long shutdowns. Through it all, she has leaned on the friends and family she holds dear as well as the city that she calls home.

THE GALT HOUSE & AJS HOTELS
LEADER IN :
Experiential Restaurants and Bars
In the early 1800s, the original Galt House was a residence located on Louisville’s waterfront, later transformed into a 60-room hotel in 1835. Over half a century later, in 1972, the Galt House Hotel gained 25 stories and continued to expand with the creation of the East Tower in 1984. To this day, the Galt House Hotel remains the only waterfront hotel in Louisville.
When you stay at the Galt House Hotel, you’re in the heart of downtown and just steps away from fun, local attractions such as the KFC Yum! Center, Fourth Street Live!, the Muhammad Ali Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and others; some of which are even connected to the Galt House Hotel by pedway. If you’d rather stay in, the Galt House Hotel is the place to do so with its full-service salon and spa, unique barber shop, pool and rooftop fitness center, to name a few.
Scott Shoenberger, President and CEO of AJS Hotels, loves working with the people of Louisville, his staff, and making an impact in his community.
“Louisville is welcoming and friendly, and the people are warm and genuine.” Though he’s been all over the world, Scott says the approachability of the people in Louisville makes a world of difference.
If you haven’t been to the Galt House Hotel in a while, you might see some changes the next time you are there. “The Galt house is all-new and completely transformed to celebrate the city. We took it back to its roots with some of the city’s historic restaurants, recreating those experiences for locals and visitors alike - an abundance of experiences in one location with seven restaurants and bars.” says Scott.
The Al J. Schneider Company recently celebrated its 75th anniversary as a family-owned company. To reserve a room or a table at one of the Galt House’s many restaurants and bars, visit www.galthouse.com. ANNIEMAC Mortgage Lending
With a deep understanding of what it means for his clients to buy or refinance their homes, guiding them through some of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, Brian Lykins works hard to ensure that his team has the resources and know how to ease them through the loan process with no details overlooked.
“The philosophy I pass on to my team is to treat every client like they would want to be treated,” explained Lykins, a branch manager at AnnieMac Home Mortgage with 19 years of experience and numerous industry awards to his name. “Honesty and transparency are critical for all aspects of life, especially for my realtor friends and for our home buyers’ experience.”
Lykins relies on an extensive background across all facets of mortgage lending — including conventional, jumbo, FHA, VA, USDA and renovation loans — to advise his team members and their clients through any situation, from firsttime home purchasing to refinances. And if there is one thing he’s learned in his career, it’s that the role of the realtor is only growing more important.
“There will always be a need for a human touch when purchasing a home,” he said. “We believe in the need for live human interaction during a complex process — the kind of service and guidance that a phone app can’t provide.”

JEFF RUBY’S STEAKHOUSE Fine Dining Experience
In 1981, soon after opening his first restaurant, ‘The Precinct’, Jeff Ruby realized that guests didn’t patronize the place simply because they were hungry. Ruby explains, “They could’ve just gone to their refrigerators if they were hungry. They were coming to my place to celebrate life and I was going to give them a total culinary and entertainment experience unlike any other so they could do just that. More than four decades later, we strive to do the exact same thing every night.”
Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Louisville has established itself as a hometown icon and can’t-miss destination for visitors. Locals and travelers from around the world relish “The Jeff Ruby Experience” which Ruby describes as “a unique combination of elements like ambiance, culinary expertise, decor, music, hospitality, rhythm and flow, sense of arrival, service and so much more.” This experience has drawn national attention. According to their website, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse has garnered awards such as OpenTable’s Top 100 Steakhouses in America; Travel + Leisure’s Top American Steakhouses; and USA Today’s Best American Steakhouses, among many others.
Ruby credits the origin of his success to his high school football coach and mentor, Jeep Bednarik, who took an interest in him after Ruby fled from a troubled home and became self-sufficient at the age of 15. Ruby says, “He
taught me the value of striving to become a better person, hard work and more. I wanted to make him proud. As a result of his mentorship, I went from failing grades to straig A’s. From not winning a wrestling match my sophmore year to not losing one my senior year. From riding the bench to All-State football honors and a scholarship to Cornell University. He is one of the single greatest influences I’ve had in my life.”
Ruby has spent much of his adult life passing along what is now his own positive influence down through his employees to his guests.
According to Ruby, “In the restaurant business, everything is important, but perhaps nothing more so than making our guets feel really important. The only way to make that happen is to make our employees our most important thing. If we offer them extraordinary opportunities, they make an emotional connection with the guests they serve. I would’ve never been successful if my employees didn’t want me to be.”
Ruby also gives back through The Jeff Ruby Foundation, which aims to alleviate childhood poverty by first addressing challenges faced by the most vulnerable population in our community - those without parents as well as those in the current foster care system.

ST. EDWARD SCHOOL
LEADER IN :
K-8 Catholic Education
At St. Edward Catholic School, more than 300 students from preschool to eighth grade benefit from small class sizes, strong community bonds and service learning through the teachings of Christ. The staff — led by Principal Karen Loper, Assistant Principal Megan Clark and Counselor Kary Scinta — prioritize educating the whole child and emphasize academic, social-emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
“Faith-driven education, smaller class sizes that support differentiated instruction and an average of 20 years combined teaching experience differentiate our program. With over 30 extracurricular activities, we give every student the opportunity to flourish and be part of a strong and supportive school community,” explained the leaders. “The mission of our St. Edward parish is: We welcome, we love, we serve.”
That church mission is carried directly into the school’s mission as well, where the goal is to inspire, prepare and create leaders. The administrators, teachers and staff at St. Edward are motivated to support that vision of Christ-centered community, and it ultimately motivates students to be their best, to serve others and to be prepared for a future in the ever-changing global community.
“St. Edward has been growing in enrollment for the past few years, while keeping our small class sizes to meet students’ needs,” the team explained. “We look forward to opening a childcare center for infants and toddlers in the fall.”

As a 44-year-old, second-generation HVAC company, Chapman Heating and Cooling takes pride in its legacy and has grown in a way that ensures it is always building advocates for its business, not merely conducting transactions.
“Seeing the growth of our secondgeneration business provides me with the fuel to leave a true legacy for my family and team members,” said President Wil Chapman. “Since most of us grew up here together, it’s cool to see the progress Louisville has been making and to be a part of that progress.”
Offering breakdown service, maintenance, as well as commercial and residential installation, Chapman Heating and Cooling has had the opportunity to work on and replace systems multiple times within their life spans. And it has become well known for its humorous television ads, including four that have aired during the Super Bowl.

Tailored Full-Service Salon Experience
As the owners of Louisville’s newest, hottest full-service salon, located in the Gateway To NuLu building downtown, TRIM NuLu’s leaders know that providing the most luxurious personalized salon services to women and men is about bringing the clients’ visions to life.
“We’ve learned that listening to clients and understanding their desires is probably the most important part of our business,” explained Co-Founder and Lead Stylist Chris Edwards and Lead Colorist Brianne Windell.
“Clients come to us because they want to look beautiful and they need our help in bringing their idea of beauty to life. It’s important that we create the client’s idea of beauty instead of our own. By listening, asking questions and really understanding what the client wants, we ensure our guests feel and look amazing by the time we are finished.”
But they also understand that to truly provide the end result that clients are seeking, TRIM NuLu must always remain flexible and ready to accommodate.
“In many salons, you’ll find a cookie-cutter experience,” they explained. “That’s great if the goal is to push through as many clients in a day as possible, but no one wants to feel like just another number in an assembly line. By being flexible in our approach, we can cater our process to the guest, instead of just catering to a process.”

While it’s important to find a solution during a challenging time, it’s equally important that you don’t allow yourself to get bogged down in negativity. Solutions are what motivate me!”
Francke embodies a can-do attitude and willingness to go the extra mile that sets ExecuTrain apart from its competition, offering a special combination of heart and years of experience to the benefit of her clients. COOLBLUE LEX
LEADER IN :
Body Contouring
Amanda Harms co-founded CoolBlue Lex in partnership with Dr. Schantz in 2018 because of the need for more comprehensive knowledge about non-invasive body contouring in central Kentucky. Ms. Harms knew there was a need for a compassionate, knowledgeable body contouring expert in the area and has risen to the challenge. Having an experienced CoolSculpting provider can make the difference between achieving a beautiful, non-surgical result versus seeing only slight changes.
Ms. Harms is the most experienced CoolSculpting provider in the state of Kentucky; practicing the longest and performing the most treatments. Dr. Schantz says, “Amanda’s artful work has secured her reputation as a provider who helps patients create meaningful changes both internally and externally. From the beginning, Amanda set herself apart in the world of noninvasive body contouring with her strong grounding in science and healthcare. She is extremely knowledgeable on educating patients as to what is possible with various treatment methods for self-improvement. When someone has a consultation or treatment with Amanda, they feel relaxed and trust that she has their best outcomes in mind.”
It’s no surprise that with this approach and the latest technology at hand, Amanda is the #1 CoolSculpting provider in Kentucky. Ms. Harms never once doubted her purpose and passion when starting CoolBlue Lex and that foundation has set her, and the business, up for more success to come. Amanda’s “patient first” mentality and her ability to connect with others has allowed her to help so many lives and she continues to do so today as she expands the CoolBlue Lex brand with a new location opening this Spring.

Preparing to celebrate its 20th year in business, AIC Roofing has established itself as central Kentucky’s go-to residential roofing contractor, with offices in Lexington, Louisville, and Richmond.
AIC specializes in shingle roofs, exterior siding, and gutters. The company can credit its success in large part to company President Blaine Adams’ vision for what drives a great customer experience.
“The best lesson I have learned is to define exactly who you are, and who you want to serve, and then strive to be the very best at that, rather than trying to be everything to everybody,” Adams explained. “In doing so, you are better able to perfect your systems and processes, making the entire experience better for both the customer, as well as the team members who are in the field actually doing the job.”
Adams finds motivation in the chance to serve his customers and his communityas a descendent of the Hatfield family, he has deep ties to the region and is proud to help his fellow Kentuckians maintain their own homes.
“Most people take pride in their homes, and have a strong desire to make sure that they stay dry, look great, and meet the needs of their family,” he said. “For this reason, there will always be a need for quality-minded roofing contractors who can solve homeowners’ issues quickly, and at a fair price.”

atherton carriage house
by: amanda harper
photos by jl jordan photography
itmay be hard to imagine that this stunning, spacious home was once simply a carriage house for the Arden estate. This beautiful structure served to house Jersey cattle, horses, Packard cars and the family’s chauffeurs until its renovation in 1952 – it was even featured in Carriage Houses of Louisville Since then, The Aetherton Carriage House has served as a private residence – and it is currently for sale.
The property has been lovingly updated by an industry-leading architect and designer to mix modern convenience while honoring its history. The unique character of the home’s exterior is mirrored throughout the design with geometrically-inspired elements; from the original exposed beams to the limestone fireplace in the living room, the home perfectly marries is past and a more contemporary outlook.
The home’s numerous windows bring tons of character and natural lighting. The arched windows in the formal sitting room are an absolute showstopper, and one of the home’s most interesting architectural elements. Upstairs, the primary suite is a light, bright sanctuary. The multi-level sitting area features large built-ins and a cozy reading loft. The glass doors were originally in the Seelbach Hotel. Also on the second floor is a kids’ bunk room and play area, as well as a spare bedroom.
As an interesting counter balance to that lightness, the mudroom, spare bedroom and portions of the office area are painted with deep jewel tones that pick up on the colors of the exterior. This anchors the interior as a part of the stunning whole.

ifyou don’t have some sort of home office setup, we have just one question for you; “Why?” We acknowledge that it’s important to have a good work-life balance. That’s precisely why we love having a dedicated office space; it actually helps delineate work and home rather than the opposite. We’ll show you how beautiful a home office can be and give you tips for being more efficient in your home office so you can get back to living your life!
a desk with a view
More and more home offices are thoughtfully placing the workspace in a window. That seems like a small thing, but it has real impacts for your overall well-being. Windows in your workspace have been proven to boost your energy levels, reduce work-related stress and improve your overall feeling of happiness. In a home office, this also allows you the chance to feel more connected to your home and family, especially if the window overlooks a spot where kids might be playing outside. This will naturally encourage you to get your work done!
texture
We’re seeing tons of home offices that incorporate lush fabrics and luxurious textures. And it just makes sense! One of the benefits of working from home is a sense of comfort; shouldn’t your home office space be designed to maximize that feeling? From velvet desk chairs to elegant drapes, texture brings warmth to what could be a sterile space.
If your current setup feels a little “blah,” start with what’s most immediate. If you’re uncomfortable at your desk, start with the chair. If that’s fine, think about what’s directly in your line of sight; lamps, desk accessories, wallpaper and window treatments can all make a big splash.

built-ins we
love the idea of a home office setup that is a seamless part of your space. Each of these desks is built into a larger space that functions as a library and storage area. Having a desk as a part of a built-in cabinet area means any wall can easily become your new office. Unused or under-utilized closets, dens, family rooms, pantries and “junk” rooms all afford you the space you need to create an office setup!
Both of these setups feature trends we’re seeing everywhere lately. Darker cabinets offer a luxe look that helps the office both feel like a feature while looking like a more organic part of the overall whole. Wallpaper brings texture and a custom feel that we just adore.

co r matters
We all know that color theory truly matters. Gone are the days of stark, boring offices; nobody feels productive in that kind of environment, especially when it’s in your house. Instead, people are carefully choosing color schemes that help them feel at home and ready to work. (If you love white or beige walls, we support you; just be sure to choose a neutral that gives you the right “vibe.”)
And while we’ve always put wallpaper on anything that would hold still long enough, statement wallpaper is very much on-trend right now. We encourage you to give it a go!
on the up&up
More home offices are going vertical. Shelves reaching to the ceiling were originally driven by necessity, but people are realizing the storage potential of their office spaces. We love how the shape and color of these cabinets is mirrored by the ceiling design.
Drawing the eye upward makes the area feel grander; everyone’s office needs a sense of gravitas! Vertical lines will help elongate the space. Pedestal tables, framed glass doors, built-in shelving, interesting ceilings, tall plants and geometric furniture can help pull off this design trick.
If you love this look, what should you avoid? Heavy, bulky desks can “weigh down” the bottom half of the room; on the flip side, large, excessively decorative lighting can have the same effect on the top half. Aim for balance –good advice for any situation, right?
accessorize!
Studies show that personal accessories help us feel more connected to our work. And in a home office, accessories help our work feel connected to our house!
In 2023, office accessories are trending toward items that seem to have a handcrafted look. That includes bouclé woven fabrics, texture pottery and organic, imperfect shapes. People are really leaning toward storied pieces with tons of character. Vintage, artisan and heirloom pieces can really add that to your space. In Kentucky, equestrian or Bourbon accessories are always on-trend.

question dinner party
Recently, TikTok user @alliegoneaway started a viral trend by suggesting, “Every grown adult needs a stand out dinner party question.” We think that’s great advice!
First of all, what is a dinner party question?
Think of them as conversation starters that you can interject into any setting, in any company. These questions should spark conversation– not controversy. Steer clear of politics, religion and other hot button topics. And they shouldn’t allow “yes or no” responses; the best dinner party questions are ones that are open-ended, inviting people to explain their choice.
The original poster’s suggestion: “If after you die, you could come back for only five minutes – and you couldn’t see your family or friends – where would you go?”
Here are more suggestions to have in your back pocket for the next lull in conversation over dinner or drinks. Be your own conversation card game!
•If you could invite any four people to a dinner party – alive or dead – who would make it on the guest list and what would you serve?
•If you could live anywhere in the world for free for a year, where would you go?
•What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever had to Google?
•What is your most treasured possession?
•If you were walking through an empty field –you were reasonably sure no one is watching, you couldn’t see any cameras – and came across a duffel bag filled with cash, would you take it?
•If you could magically become any person for 24 hours, who would you be?
•What would the title of your autobiography be?
•Who/what do you want to be when you grow up? (This is tongue-incheek, obviously, as you’ll probably be among adults.)
•If you could have any single object in the world completely free, but you couldn’t sell it, give it away or otherwise benefit from it other than just having it and enjoying it, what would you want?
•Who is your hero, and why?
•What’s the most memorable meal you’ve ever eaten – good or bad? •

Women’s Armed Services Integration Act:
75th Anniversary of Women in the Military
Aswe take a moment to celebrate March as Women’s History Month, we should take a moment to reflect on the history of integration of women officially into the United Stated Armed Forces. This year officially marks the 75th Anniversary of the 1948 signing of the “Women’s Armed Services Integration Act”. This important law allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and the newly formed Air Force. Prior to the passing of this act, women, with the noted exception of nurses, served in the military only in times of war.
During World War II, over 150,000 women had served in the WAVES (the Navy) and the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps and were still serving when the act was enacted. Women also took part in the SPARS, created by the Coast Guard, and the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, during the war. In total, 350,000 American women joined and served during World War II.
The bill was proposed to the 80th U. S. Congress and went to Armed Services Committees of both the House and Senate in January 1948. However, there were strong opponents in the House who believed that women should serve only in a reserve capacity. What ensued was a strategic counterattack created and led by testimonies of many high-ranking officials including Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Omar Bradley, Admiral Louis Denfeld, and General Hoyt Vandenberg on February 18, 1948.
However, still with a sense of opposition, the committee rejected the “regular” status and changed the name of the bill to the “Women’s Armed Forces Services Reserve Act of 1948” on March 23, 1948. Once the bill hit the Senate, its members rejected the revised bill and called for a joint committee to reach a compromise. This was further strengthened by the growing concerns over international situations which helped bolster the argument for

women’s regular status in the original bill. Russia’s actions in Czechoslovakia and West Berlin had caused the Army to have difficulty recruiting enough men for the new “all-volunteer” forces that was instituted in peacetime under President Truman. Many politicians were reluctant but needed to be viewed as a supporter of an “all-volunteer” military, so they advocated for permitting women to enter the Regular Army.
On May 19, 1948, the House changed its stance and agreed to women serving in both the regular and reserve components of the armed services. The original wording of the bill was restored adding two amendments placing a limit of women in regular service between 1948-1950 and a process detailing how women should be commissioned. On May 26, the Senate unanimously approved the bill. The House approved it on June 2 with a vote of 206 to 133. President Truman signed the bill on June 12, 1948. Soon after, many branches of service began inducting women into it’s ranks including the Navy who swore in its first six women enlistees on July 7, 1948, and later that year commissioned as a lieutenant commander Frances Lois Willoughby, who had served in World War II in the Naval Reserve, its first female doctor. While a major milestone for women in the military it wasn’t until the 1970’s that we saw the inclusion of women with children in the armed forces. With the help of those who funded the pavement 75 years ago, the Commonwealth of Kentucky is home to nearly 27,000 women veterans!

March is colon cancer, kidney cancer, and multiple myeloma cancer awareness month. The month of March was first declared Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month nationally in 2000. Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related death in America? Did you know it is the third most diagnosed cancer among men and women? By taking the preventative steps and incorporating healthy lifestyle changes, you can lessen the risk of developing colon cancer. By maintaining a healthy weight, incorporating physical exercises, increasing fiber intake, decreasing the amount of processed foods, and avoiding or keeping alcohol and tobacco use at a minimum will lower your risk.
At Baptist Milestone, we encourage our members to feel safe and welcome when experiencing cancer themselves or with a loved one in their family. The love and support Milestone has to offer is undeniable. We are a family and share bonds with our clientele that will last a lifetime. Our calming environment and nurturing trainers will put their fears at ease as they release endorphins and decrease subjective symptoms and physiologic effects during treatment.
Our Milestone member, Aaron Flaker was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021. At age 50, he had a routine colonoscopy. At that time, a mass was discovered in his colon. With the help of his doctors at Nortons, he was put into an immediate plan of action. Within 24 hours, a biopsy confirmed that it was malignant. Surgery was ordered in a timely manner and because Aaron caught this early, he is a survivor! He had ultimate confidence, undying strength, a positive spirit, focused mindset, an extreme passion for life, and one amazing family that was not ever giving up on him. Receiving 3 month rounds of chemotherapy treatment, Aaron’s will to beat cancer prevailed. He is a believer in staying positive and healthy. Aaron attended Milestone regularly and stayed active during his treatments. He continues to attend Milestone, personal trains with Jennifer Wathen, and is officially cancer free as of May 2022. “Being an advocate about getting screened and seeing action from them is so rewarding,” says Aaron.
Choose healthy choices and be proactive. Live life to the fullest, but do put your health and screening first. It could save your life and your loved ones around you.

“Serving as chair for the 2018 Go Red for Women campaign in Central Kentucky, I became aware that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America, claiming a life every 80 seconds, which is more than all forms of cancer combined. Heart disease has also hit close to home for me and my family. My dad had congestive heart failure and he and his dad both died of aortic aneurysms, and my grandmother also endured challenges from heart disease.
In 2019, I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia and now take heart medication daily. I have a passion for the work of the American Heart Association and am happy to work alongside incredible folks from across the country to help spread the awareness LOVE.”

“I lost my mother when I was 12, and my grandmother took my sister and I in to raise us. She was diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, aortic valve stenosis, and heart failure, resulting in surgeries and other challenges. She worked hard and was the epitome of the kind of woman who put everyone before herself, often at her expense. In 2019, my commitment to raising awareness about heart health became more significant after I gave birth to my daughter. Women often wear many hats, and our health suffers. I’d love to see women have a better balance. Being a Woman of Impact helps me not only take action myself, but I also get an opportunity to share my story and challenge you to do the same thing.”

“As part of this year’s Kentucky Woman of Impact campaign, I’ve brought together a team that’s working to make the greatest impact possible on women’s health. Go Red for Women was born as a campaign to raise awareness among women about their greatest health threat — heart disease. Slowly, the campaign grew into a movement bringing together thousands of women. Go Red for Women is a trusted, passionate force for change. It provides a platform for women and their families to lead healthier lives and transform communities. Our team is focused on preventing heart disease and stroke. We’re promoting healthy lifestyles, building awareness, and raising critically needed funds to support research and education initiatives.”

“In 2014, my parents headed to Mexico for vacation. My dad thought he had food poisoning, but there’s a long story involving heart damage, a family member getting him a Medivac flight and into the care of a heart doctor, surgery, weeks of recovery, and a cardiac ablation and pacemaker. After all that, he survived. My husband’s dad had his first heart attack at 48, and my mom’s mother was taken by a stroke after only being in our lives for a few years. My connection to the AHA in my professional life began when I joined Laura’s Lean Beef. Our Laura’s Lean Beef brand is known for being Heart-Check Certified, which is perfect for people hoping to keep beef in their diet and still be heart healthy.”

“I am a stroke survivor. I survived. TWICE. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year. That’s about 1 of every 18 deaths. On average, someone dies of stroke every four minutes. Only about 40 percent of stroke deaths occur in males, while 60 percent occur in females. And on top of that, 1 in 3 women will die from heart-related issues. That’s why I’m raising muchneeded funds for the American Heart Association and working to improve the health of our communities. We hope you will join us on our mission because about 80% of these diseases can be prevented.”

“The issue of heart health for women is deeply personal for me. I was born with a hole in my heart and spent most of my childhood years in and out of hospitals. Thankfully, with modern medicine and my parents’ determination to nurse me to health, my heart healed, and I have been able to live well into adulthood. I am aware that my heart’s complications can return anytime, so I am committed to treating each day as a blessing and not taking life and health for granted. I’m honored to be nominated for Go Red for Women’s Woman of Impact campaign. As part of this year’s class of changemakers, I’ve brought together a team that’s working to make the greatest impact possible on women’s health.”

“Cardiovascular diseases, which include heart disease and stroke, claim the life of a woman about every 80 seconds. Go Red for Women is not just about wearing red. It’s not just about sharing heart-health facts. It’s about providing opportunities for women to take charge of their health, building communities that support access to healthy choices, demanding equal access to health care for all women and their families, and increasing women in STEM in upcoming generations. The time is now. Women are leaning into the idea that when we take a stand, commit, and work together, real change is possible.”

“In 2020, I had a minor surgery and found out I was a Type 2 Diabetic. I developed high blood pressure and was diagnosed with Diastolic Dysfunction, which occurs when your lower heart chambers don’t relax. My grandmother died of congestive heart failure. I didn’t want this to be my story, so I knew I had to make some changes. In 2021, I underwent weight loss surgery and lost over 60 pounds. Now, I’m no longer on diabetic medication and my blood pressure medication dosage has been lowered. I chose to live, and it’s made the biggest difference in how I feel about myself. My goal is to make everyone aware of how serious heart disease is and encourage people to live a heart healthy life.”

“I am on a mission to stop stroke and help those who have already been affected by it. As a stroke nurse, I have seen firsthand how lives are thrown into upheaval in an instant due to a stroke. While medical intervention, expert therapy, and supportive resources can restore quality of life, stroke remains the number one cause of disability in the United States. The impact of that disability ripples throughout the family and community. Women across all age and racial demographics have worse outcomes than men for stroke. We don’t know why. That research needs to be done. I joined the Woman of Impact campaign to raise funds and erase health disparities.”

Hop It! to
East
is nearly here... believe it or not! There is so much to do before April 9th hops into town. Whether you’re hosting a big, festive meal or just hunting eggs on the lawn with your littles, we have tips to help you get a head start on this hoppy celebration!
LIVING
Set Scthee
If there’s one holiday that really invites you fully, giddily to embrace whimsy, it’s Easter! As springtime finally makes itself known, we’re feeling a little spring in our steps. Even though the weather usually isn’t quite right for picnics, we always think of ways to bring the feel of an outdoor dining experience indoors.
Mismat It
We always love mismatched glassware and plates, but it’s a look that’s especially appropriate for the playful spirit of Easter. Our best advice is to either stick to a single color and mismatch the textures, or to select a single standout color.
Veg Out
Is there anything more precious than cabbage plates?! When we think of bunnies, we think of gardens; vegetable-themed plates, terrines and platters are more than welcome at our table.
Natul Matials
Woven rattan placemats, trays, napkin rings and chargers instantly make us think of warmer weather. Tucking live flowers, eggs, birds’ nests and greenery into your tablescape will bring spring to the party.
Colorful Glasswe
Clear glassware can be beautiful, but it often doesn’t have the impact that colorful glass brings to the table (pun intended). Whereas clear glasses disappear into the background, colored glass underscores the color theme and brings visual interest to each placesetting.
Flols for Spng?
Yeah, yeah. We get it; it’s hardly groundbreaking to suggest floral patterns for a spring table. But the right tablecloth or napkin set could serve you for months to come – and certainly again next Easter.
Cute Nkins
If you invest in themed napkins for just one event a year, make it Easter. Especially if your other table décor has more of a general “spring” vibe, napkins featuring bunnies, eggs or ducklings will bring everything together.

East Tree
The “Ostereierbaum” is a tradition brought to the US by German immigrants. You can buy premade Easter trees of any size, but it’s easy to transform any tree or shrub in your yard! Simply string plastic eggs on ribbon and hang them from the branches.
Hot Cross Buns
Traditional fare for Good Friday, hot cross buns are steeped in symbolism – and superstition! One tradition states that hanging hot cross buns baked on Good Friday in your kitchen will protect against fires and will help ensure that all the bread you bake in the coming year will turn out perfectly!
Egg Roll
In the 1870s, it was popular for kids to roll Easter eggs down Capitol Hill. The practice was banned when the rowdy youths began leaving the place a mess. President Rutherford B. Hayes issued a proclaimation that any kids who wanted to roll eggs could do so on the White House lawn – and the practice has continued ever since.
Sunse Svice
The Bible story goes that Mary visited Jesus’s tomb at dawn on Easter to find it empty. The first church “sunrise service” commemorating this story was held in 1732 in Saxony. Since then, it has become a tradition among congregations all over the world, often with live bands and picnic brunches.
Jping
Egg knocking or egg jarping is a silly Easter egg game with roots in Medieval times. Two players hold eggs and tap the pointed eggs together; whichever one doesn’t break “survives” to the next round of competition. Most people play with dyed, hard-boiled eggs, but some “dye”-hards insist on using raw eggs.
Bonnets
As Irving Berlin put it, “In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it/You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade!” In records dating back to the 16th century, it was considered good luck to wear new clothes for Easter. Hats were a thrifty way to sport something new on Easter Sunday. They became a flashy tradition in many churches and communities. This year, try making your own Easter bonnet!
Lb or H
In early Jewish history, lambs were often seen as sacrifices to God and served as part of the Passover feast. This was also seen as symbolic of Jesus for Christians. On the other hand, a lot of folks just love ham for Easter! It’s a symbol of good luck in many cultures – and most Americans simply prefer it over the taste of lamb.
Deting Eggs
The tradition of decorating eggs appears in many cultures – in fact, archaeologists have uncovered engraved ostrich eggs in Africa that are over 60,000 years old! Dyed eggs became a part of Easter celebrations due to the Lenten fast; households ended up with an excess of eggs that they’d have to use up before they went bad! Now, we decorate eggs mostly for fun. While the tradition of decorating eggs is nothing new, there’s always room for innovation. There are countless techniques for dyeing and decorating Easter eggs. Pinterest and TikTok can offer lots of fun ideas!
Crot Cookies
If Santa gets a treat for leaving gifts, why not the Easter Bunny? Bake and decorate Easter cookies to leave out the night before Easter – bonus points if they look (or taste) like carrots! This is a fun tradition to start... and enjoy.

What the Devil?!
Pretty in Pink Eggs
2 15-ounce cans sliced beets
12 hard-boiled eggs, peeled
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1 c. vinegar
Not to sound overly dramatic, but if you’re not serving deviled eggs at your Easter shindig, we’re not comin’. This Southern culinary staple couldn’t be a better fit for springtime dining. Plus, they basically serve double duty as Easter décor! We truly appreciate the classics, but if you’re looking for a fun twist for your eggs, here are some ideas.
Guacole Eggs
6 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and halved
2 ripe avocados
1 T lime juice
1 T sour cream
1 T chopped cilantro
Drain beets (see notes), reserving 1 cup of juice. Place beets and eggs in a large glass jar. Bring reserved beet juice, sugar, water and vinegar to a boil. Let cool slightly, then pour over beets and eggs in jar. Cover tightly. Refrigerate.
Note: if you want to scale this recipe to do more eggs at once, don’t worry about sourcing more cans of beets; just reserve more juice. For a delicate pink edge, as shown here, soak the eggs overnight. For egg whites that are completely pink, let sit for up to a week before the big meal. These are great as-is, or prepare as you normally would for deviled eggs. If you’re a big fan of beets, feel free to chop up some of the beets from the jar and add to your deviled egg mixture!
Pinch freshly ground pepper
In a bowl, combine scooped out avocado flesh and 2-4 yolks; mash with a fork. Stir in lime juice, sour cream, cilantro and pepper. Scoop or pipe into halved egg whites. Garnish with chopped chilies, chives or cilantro. Little slices of radish will add some texture and festive color.
Note: Feel free to stir in other ingredients you typically enjoy in your gaucamole, such as minced onion, tomato or chilies. If you like a little spice, a shake of hot sauce, such as Cholula or Valentina, can bring the heat.

Passov
This year, Passover runs from the evening of April 5th through the evening of April 13th. For anyone who isn’t familiar with this tradition, Passover celebrates the story of the Israelites’ escape from slavery. Passover is most commonly observed by Jewish people, but many Christian churches have services to recognize this celebration.
The food restrictions surrounding this holiday make dining an interesting challenge, but also full of meaningful and traditional dishes that families love to gather around. If you’re looking to switch up your meals during Passover this year, we have a few ideas to help you out!
Choset
This delicious relish is traditionally made with diced apples, chopped walnuts, sweet red wine, cinnamon and brown sugar. We recommend lightly toasting the walnuts; if you need a little extra sweetness, add honey.
Bsket
This main dish has graced Passover tables for years. Trimmed, seasoned and smoked, there’s truly nothing better. Looking for something a little simpler? A crockpot pot roast is your BFF.
Tzimmes
This colorful mixture of root vegetables and dried fruits is a perfect accompaniment to so many Passover dishes. Fun fact? Tzimmes means “to make a fuss” which is precisely what everyone will do!
Kugel
Who doesn’t love a hearty, warm casserole? We love using Passover-certified wide noodles. For a savory take, go with root vegetables and mushrooms. For something sweeter, sweet potatoes and apples are on the menu.
Flourless Cholate Cake
This gluten-free cake gets its lift from eggs, so it’s perfect for Passover. Add a chocolate ganache or raspberry coulis topping for a delicious dessert. (If you’re not much of a baker, look up a recipe for Matzoh Icebox Cake.)
Cauliflow Rice
Many families eschew rice at Passover – and keto eaters skip this carb year-round. Cauliflower rice is a great
option that works for low-carb diners. Try incorporating this into your Seder either as a side or as a replacement for the carbs in a casserole. We love the idea of doing a chicken fried “rice” with this veggie.
Zucini
Let this veggie do some heavy lifting this year. Shave or “zoodle” it for salads, casseroles, toasts and more. Zucchini lasagna is an easy Passover weeknight meal that we think you’ll add to your regular menu rotation!
Salad
Salads bring freshness to a meal that can otherwise grow a little heavy. You should really let your creativity shine here. What about fried slices of lemon to bring some brightness to the plate? Quick-pickled rhubarb would add some pop! Colorful chicory will bring spring right to the table. And don’t forget that a nice honey mustard vinaigrette will echo flavors from elsewhere in the meal.
Matzoh Evything
Matzoh ball soup, chocolate-dipped matzoh, matzoh granola, matzoh-crusted salmon, matzoh toasts… if this traditional ingredient is a hit at your gatherings, then have at it. But if none of your guests feel it’s especially important to your meals, we give you permission to skip it. There are lots of alternatives that are just as traditional. That said…
Matzo Brei
This is a dish we just love! Make a batter of matzo, eggs, salt and pepper. Fry it in oil. This simple dish is a perfect vehicle for spreads, compotes, lox, sautéed greens and more. It’s perfect for just about any setting. •
