To explore Lexington’s rich history,
take a walk back in time to the late 18th century—a time when the American West was new and the individuals fundamental in shaping our country strolled the very streets we walk today. This region was the first part of Kentucky to be settled, and Lexington was known early on as the “Athens of the West” due to the vibrant intellectual core that took root almost immediately after its founding. Scattered throughout Lexington are fascinating reminders of this era—historic homes and structures preserved in time that are waiting to be explored by lovers of architecture and those who are invigorated by the past. Get a taste of the historic nature of Lexington simply by strolling the streets, or if you’re looking to dive headfirst into the fibers of this city’s storied past, look no further than some of the most famous historic homes in town... story by Anne Trussell

Lexington is a hub of historical beauty. One of the most popular historic areas is downtown’s Gratz Park neighborhood, which includes famous preserved homes, such as the Hunt-Morgan House, the Bodley Bullock House, the Alexander Moore House, the Peter Paul House, the Carrick Houses and the Carnegie Center. The exteriors of these homes are magnificent on their own, but if you want to get an insider’s look, you can call or visit their respective websites to learn about their tour offerings.
It’s hard to miss the two vibrantly-colored homes that reside on the edge of the Gratz Park neighborhood – the Alexander Moore and Peter Paul homes. The quaint blue home with the bright red door was built by Alexander Moore, who ran a stationary store on Main Street and was responsible for selling the first school books to the children of Lexington. Peter Paul II, a stonecutter from England, built the adjacent light red Federal-style house, and the giant Ginkgo tree in the back was said to have been planted by statesman Henry Clay.

The Hunt-Morgan House, located on North Mill Street, was built in 1814 by hemp merchant John Wesley Hunt, said to be the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies. The Federal-style brick home was originally known as Hopemont, but has since adopted the name Hunt-Morgan as prominent members of the family came to reside there over time. This includes Hunt’s grandson, General John Morgan, known fervently as the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy,” due to his daring military endeavors (he was once the ostentatious leader of a group of guerilla fighters called “Morgan’s Raiders”). Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan, Hunt’s great grandson, was also a resident of the home and was one of the few Kentuckians to win a Nobel Prize for his work in genetics. Today, the Hunt-Morgan House operates as an interpretive museum showcasing early Kentucky furniture and 19th-century paintings. It also houses the Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum containing Civil War artifacts.
W
Walk across from the Hunt-Morgan House to Market Street and you’ll come upon the BodleyBullock House, a home peppered with Kentucky Federal and Greek revival architectural details. It was built in 1814 for Lexington mayor Thomas Pindell but is most notably known as having housed General Thomas Bodley, a hero from the war of 1812, and Dr. Waller Bullock, an acclaimed Lexington physician. According to folklore, one of the Bodley-Bullock House’s former residents is said to still be around—Bullock’s wife, Minnie, the co-founder of the Lexington Clinic. It’s said that the ghost of “Miss Minnie” still lingers in the house, flicking off lights and shaking tables to display her preferences even after her death in 1970. A teetotaler in life, she requested that no alcohol be permitted in her house and was thus displeased with her husband’s decision to hang a portrait of the town drunk, William “King” Solomon, in their home. You can catch a glimpse of the painting that irritated Miss Minnie so on your visit, as it resides in the house still today. The Bodley-Bullock House is now a popular wedding venue and event space, as well as the Junior League headquarters.

The Loudon House, now home to the Lexington Art League, was built in 1851 by Lexington builder John McMurtry for the cousin of Francis Scott Key, who penned our national anthem. It’s considered one of the largest and finest examples of Gothic revival architecture in the state and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It can be tricky to find, but once you come across it on Castlewood Avenue, the beautiful gothic painted white mansion is unmistakable. While the property is still owned by the city, it has housed the Lexington Art League (LAL) since 1984. The LAL is a contemporary visual art center committed to connecting art and artists to local, regional and national communities. It offers multiple art exhibitions and events throughout the year, including youth exhibition and outreach programs, artists conversation, community tours and more, and is also responsible for putting on the annual Woodland Art Fair.

A stone’s throw away from Gratz Park is the Mary Todd Lincoln House, childhood home of First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln. (Fun fact: this year would have been her 200th birthday.) The Federal-style home was built first as an inn around 1803 and was originally named “The Sign of the Green Tree” before it was bought by the Todd family. Mary Todd lived in the home between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one before meeting and marrying a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln. The home has the honor of being the first historic site restored in honor of a First Lady and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It now operates as a private museum, and tours are available March through November.

Take a drive away from downtown and you’ll happen upon the historic Ashland Estate, former home of beloved statesman Henry Clay. It is said to have been named for the abundance of Ash Trees on the property. Today, the estate is preserved on 17 acres of wooded ground, on which you’ll find a carriage house, smokehouse, ice houses and dairy cellars in addition to the historic mansion. Though Henry Clay was never president, he was a well-loved orator that played a major role on the stage of national politics for more than forty years. He is also credited with introducing the Mint Julep to Washington D.C. politicos.

Also situated on the property is the Ashland Garden, a traditional English parterre garden featuring a wide variety of trees, shrubs, perennials, roses and much more. If you’re interested in learning about the 40 different varieties of trees on the Ashland Estate, you can take the Trees of Ashland tour either on your own or alongside the house tour.

The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation
Founded in 1955, the Blue Grass Trust is a nonprofit passionate about preserving the special historic places of Lexington. This membership-based organization is the oldest non-profit in Kentucky, and its members work tirelessly to promote the historical beauty of the Bluegrass region through positive leadership, education and inspiration in order to enhance the quality of life for future generations. The Blue Grass Trust originated with a group of passionate Lexington citizens who were determined to save Hopemont, today’s Hunt-Morgan house, from demolition. Since then, they have been integral in rescuing other famous Lexington structures such as the Dudley House, Shakertown of Pleasant Hill, the Mary Todd Lincoln House, Henry Clay’s Law Office and many more. While exploring the historical sites of Lexington, you might spy the Blue Grass Trust plaque on a number of buildings around town. These are designed to call attention to architecturally and historically significant buildings in Lexington that are at least 50 years old. Since the BGT Plaque program began in the early 1970s, more than 900 plaques have been awarded. You can learn more about the Blue Grass Trust and their ongoing mission at bluegrasstrust.org •

LINDA GORTON Linda Gorton is a self-described realist who dreams big. She served 16 years on the LexingtonFayette Urban County Council, four of those years as Vice Mayor from 2011-2015. “I’m confident that my knowledge of the city – its many assets, as well as the challenges it faces – equip me well, coupled with my proven leadership during 16 successful years of service as vice mayor and council member,” Gorton said. Gorton’s 43-year career as a registered nurse in public health, private practice and mental health settings gives her a unique approach to some of the toughest issues facing the city. “We live in a historically safe city, but we must stem the tide of increased violent crime – linked to the opioid crisis – in order to assure the well-being of all our neighborhoods. That’s why I’ve developed a plan to join law enforcement, healthcare and insurance providers, job reentry programs and rehabilitation centers in a collaborative effort to address this complex problem,” she said. Access to services is part of her plan. “That means innovation in technology, job-training and education at all levels, and the continued recognition of our unique, spectacular landscape in the heart of the Bluegrass,” Gorton explained.
TERESA ISAAC Teresa Isaac served as mayor of Lexington from 2001-2007 and has the distinction of being the longest serving Vice Mayor in the city’s history. Additionally, she brings her experience as an attorney, a prosecutor, and Director of the Fair Housing Council to the office. “I have the most experience within city government. Lexington was thriving when I was Mayor. The city was named in several national publications as a great place to live. I led efforts to improve the health and safety of the city, increased salaries of police and firefighters, lowered budget, and crime was low,” Isaac said. Isaac wants to bring back the city she fostered as mayor. “Where we show respect for our elders and concern for our youth; where we celebrate diversity, and deliver services equally; where we promote and protect our farmland and our small businesses,” she said. Isaac says one of her strengths is bringing people together with the vision to unify rather than divide. “The challenges we face are complicated to solve and to move forward, I would listen and appoint leadership to represent both sides,” she said.
SKIP HORINE Skip Horine’s website reads, “Born, raised and lived here all my life. Not a carpetbagger. I want to make Lexington a non-gotcha city that works for the people not against them.” Horine has run for mayor twice previously. He believes that Lexington is quickly becoming a major metro area, and needs to plan for that future. “We need to plan for a metro area that includes all the surrounding counties,” he said during a mayoral forum. During the same forum, he said that he believes a partnership between schools and Lexington police is the key to safer schools. Horine could not be reached for comment.

KEVIN O. STINNETT Kevin Stinnett served five terms as the 6th District City Councilmember from 2004 – 2014. Today, he is an At-Large Council member and chairs the Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee. In that capacity Stinnett has been closely involved in decisions addressing crime, basic government services and financial infrastructure. Stinnett brings 20 years working in financial services/business to the table. He is the owner of Premier Financial Group and is a partner at Lexington Insurance Agency. Stinnett was instrumental in creating the first-ever debt management plan for the city. He also co-sponsored the city’s current Economic Contingency Fund, better known as the rainy-day fund. “Public service can effectively respond to the needs of our citizens as long as city officials listen and act. It is not always easy and there are always more needs than there is money. However, I’ve worked hard as a Council member to provide common-sense leadership that people can trust,” Stinnett said. Stinnett believes crime, specifically the opioid crisis, is the biggest challenge facing the city. “Our number one responsibility in local government is to preserve and protect the safety of our homes, schools and neighborhoods,” he said.
IKE LAWRENCE Ike Lawrence is a self-employed real estate remodeler, preservationist and landlord. Transparency in city government is among his top concerns. In that spirit, Lawrence would propose elected officials be regularly scheduled guests on talk radio. Lawrence’s platform includes proposing a constitutional vicious-dog ordinance, enforcing the “no tint windows” ordinance, instituting a sidewalk policy prohibiting baggy pants, and painting over the rainbow crosswalks and Manchester Street mural. Crime and homelessness are also top priorities. Lawrence proposes targeting high crime neighborhoods with a stop-and-frisk policy allowing officer to confiscate illegal guns and ammunition. He also wants to eliminate loitering of the homeless in Phoenix Park, instead proposing a tent city elsewhere. Lawrence has other alternative housing options for the homeless he would like to see proposed. Among them, finding rentals and billing family members for the expenses. Lawrence also proposes cutting costs by eliminating the homeless employment van, something he calls “wasteful”.

RONNIE BASTIN Ronnie Bastin has served Lexington for more than 33 years. He joined the Lexington Police department in 1984 rising up in the rank until he was appointed police chief in 2008. Most recently Bastin served as Public Safety Commissioner appointed by Mayor Jim Gray. “I successfully led more than 1,700 employees and managed a $200 million dollar budget—that’s more than half of the entire city budget. This role allowed me to have a hand in the agencies and areas that have the largest impact on quality of life for Lexington residents.” Bastin said. Bastin believes his experience with government operations, budgets and leadership will be an asset to the office. Knowing that crime is a top concern in the city, Bastin is prepared with a robust plan to support police, stop crime before it happens and get to the root causes of crime like opioid addiction, poverty and lack of support services. “I want Lexington to be a city with a buzzing economy, safe schools, an industry leader in business and agriculture and a place where people can successfully live, work and raise a family,” Bastin said.
WILLIAM WEYMAN The top issues in William Weyman’s campaign are senior citizen housing, raising minimum wages, supporting Fayette County and “freedom of choice, peace and prosperity.” Weyman is a first-time candidate. In an interview with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, he said, “I feel that the zoning laws should be reviewed and perhaps be changed. Since Lexington is in need of more low income housing, there are areas that are zoned for businesses but most of the stores have closed. These areas could be changed from businesses zones to residential zoning.” He also said, “I feel that a group could be organized to look for large companies that are ready to relocate, we should invite those companies to visit Lexington and offer benefits of Lexington that would be within the state limit.” He also felt that some changes to infrastructure may be in order. “I feel that the infrastructure in Lexington is in need of repair and should be evaluated and repaired beginning with sewers and street repair,” he said. Weyman could not be reached for comment or a photo.
STILL DECIDING? In this day and age of social media, most candidates can easily be found on Facebook and Twitter. Most candidates also have campaign websites where they go further indepth on the issues affecting our city.

Food for Thought With its visionary Zero Hunger Zero Waste program, Kroger, America’s grocer, is working to eliminate hunger and wasted food. by Allison Jones Did you know that 42 million people across the country struggle with hunger? Or that an astonishing 72 billion pounds of food end up in landfills each year? It’s a baffling paradox: Forty percent of our country’s food goes to waste, while one in eight Americans suffers from hunger. The numbers are staggering, so Kroger, the largest grocery chain in the nation, has adopted an initiative in an effort to erase hunger and eliminate food waste by 2025.
68
May 2018 | TopsInLex.com
“No family in a community we serve should ever go hungry, and no food in a store we operate should ever go to waste,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO. For that reason, Kroger, America’s grocer and one of the leading retailers in the world, has made a commitment to assist communities around the country with this crisis and to honor the company’s “Purpose to feed the human spirit”. While they don’t have all the answers, Kroger is seeking solutions by asking communities, partners and other stakeholders to help provide ideas, feedback and best practices as the effort evolves.
ZERO HUNGER The concept to erase hunger involves accelerating food donations to provide 3 billion meals by 2025 along with $10 million to fund the initiative. As of 2013, Kroger has donated 1 billion meals via combined food and monetary means. And it isn’t just about providing more food to the needy, but better quality food. They are striving to provide more balanced meals via Kroger’s innovative fresh food— rather than canned food— donations program. They are also advocating for public policy changes that would alleviate long lines at food banks and lobbying for continued funding of federal hunger relief programs. Humans aren’t the only beneficiaries from the initiative, both their plants and retail locations will expand animal feed processes which will allow for the donation of safe and nutritious food scraps to animals.
ZERO WASTE The process to eliminate waste is on track for Kroger. By 2020, they are aiming to ultimately meet and exceed EPA’s Zero Waste threshold of 90% diversion from landfill in their facilities. They are also continuing to integrate reusable plastic containers into their network in an effort to reduce waste. Also on their agenda: Testing new technology that will lower waste in the supply chain plus expanding their composting operation to provide nutrients back to our environment. In 2016, Kroger recycled 68 million pounds of plastic and 2.35 billion pounds of cardboard. By the year 2020, they expect to recycle over 200 million pounds of plastic and 3.3 billion tons of cardboard.
HOW YOU CAN HELP So what can we do, locally, to help drive this cause? Tim McGurk, Regional Director of Corporate Affairs for Kroger is excited about engaging our community with this endeavor. “We can’t do this alone. We are making it very easy for our customers to join in this effort. Donations of any amount can be dropped in the coin boxes which are located at the checkout lanes of all area Kroger stores. These donations will go directly to Dare to Care food bank here in Louisville. Non-perishable food donations can be placed in the Dare to Care barrels which are also located in every area Kroger store.” For more information on this impactful endeavor, go to thekrogerco.com/sustainability/zero-hunger-zero-waste and join the effort to end hunger and eliminate waste. •

HOP

Bluegrass: story by Jen Roytz
LEXARTS
Have you ever wanted to explore Lexington’s art scene, but didn’t exactly know where to start? The LexArts HOP is a fun and easy way to explore the city and its many talented artists. Now in its 24th year, this gallery hop-style series features art at 44 different venues, including restaurants, museums, artists’ studios, retail outlets and other creative spaces, that open their doors to HOP-ers on the third Friday of every other month. Official HOP Guides are available at any of the HOP locations, at the LexArts offices (161 N. Mill St.) or are available via download on the LexArts website. “When the HOP started back in 1994, it was a major catalyst in downtown development because it brought people back into the city after the work day,” said LexArts Executive Director Nan Plummer. “Now, it brings more people into artists’ studios, restaurants, galleries and other venues. It’s amplified the number of places artists can sell their work and brings a lot of attention to both the artists and venues.” Thanks to presenting sponsorship support from McBrayer Law Firm, the LexArts HOP is free to the public. Each venue offers a unique and new experience from one HOP to the next and many of the pieces on display are available for purchase. “Some people come to shop for art, while others simply visit HOP locations to see and experience it,” said Plummer. “That’s one of the reasons LexArts undertook this initiative so many years ago. We believe in real art by artists who are your friends, neighbors and fellow Kentuckians. It’s a snapshot of what’s going on artistically in Central Kentucky.” LexArt’s HOP plays a central role in supporting the organization’s vision of creating a progressive and innovative community inspired by the arts. As Lexington’s premier cultural development, advocacy and fundraising organization, LexArts offers a wide array of services and programs aimed at integrating art into the daily lives of Lexingtonians. They also operate ArtsPlace Gallery, one of the city’s premier visual arts galleries which offers a continually-rotating array of highquality works by Kentucky-based artists.

T
he spring weather we have been craving has finally started to make an appearance and we are ready to embrace more color in our wardrobe. No shade makes a more memorable statement than classic red. Raf Simons continues to bring the Calvin Klein brand back to its American roots for Spring ‘18, looking to classic horror films, pop art and ‘50s couture silhouettes for inspiration. Gathered for fullness and movement, this A-line skirt is woven from silk and printed with red ink splattered spots. Keeping the red alive with our top, we turned to Roland Mouret. Made from woolcrepe that resists creasing, this colorful top has a sculptural cold-shoulder silhouette and pleated peplum hem. Adding a hint of sparkle to footwear are a pair of nude and red satin and leather embellished sandals from René Caovilla. Flaunt the back of the stiletto heel featuring toneon-tone rhinestones, with ankle straps and a glittered outsole. Keeping things on the sassy side, we wanted the jewelry to be fun and fabulous. Kendra Scott’s ‘Misha’ Earrings are so delightful, we might just need a pair in every color. The bag is all about a modern take on a traditional design. Chloé’s ‘Drew’ saddle bag is the epitome of relaxed modernity: A rounded silhouette mixes with a squared-off flap, while gleaming goldtone hardware highlights the bag’s soft, grained leather. Since this is a daytime look, a pair of chic sunnies are a must. Illesteva’s ‘Leonard’ design offer just the right amount of refined flair. Wrapping things up with a touch of beauty, Bobbi Brown’s ‘Scotch On the Rocks’ nail polish is red done right. Whether you are wearing it on your fingers or toes (or both!) you are sure to get noticed in this poppin’ shade. When you take this stylish look out on the town, there will no question that you are ‘Better Off Red’. by Jesse L. Brooks TOPS Magazine | May 2018

Every year the Vanity Fair post-Oscars bash proves that the after-party can be just as glamorous as the main event. This year, that rang truer than ever, as the ladies of Hollywood have never looked better. One of our favorite actresses and activists, Olivia Wilde, put a little disco magic into the evening. Wearing a shimmering Roberto Cavalli gown, Olivia was giving some serious Studio 54 vibes. When it came to her face, celebrity makeup artist Melanie Inglessis played up the star’s amazing eye color incorporating Rose Gold and Burgundy hues. The contrast of these shades intensified the dreamy color of Olivia’s lovely blue-green eyes. For skin, it was all about creating a gorgeous and sexy look with a summery glow. Melanie paired Wilde’s smoldering eyes and luminous skin with a soft nude lip, lending just a hint of shine. Below Ms. Inglessis shares exactly how she created the look, including all of the key products and tips she used to get Olivia ready for one of Tinseltown’s biggest parties of the year.

diary of a plastic surgeon
“People ask me if I’m tired” is one of the most frequent complaints we hear from patients. Age-related changes in the eyes can give the appearance that we are tired, even when we feel energetic. When we look at another person, we normally look at their eyes first. So, having the eyes appear youthful and bright is one of the most important items we address in Plastic Surgery. There are several components of aging around the eyes. Wrinkles develop around the eyes, known as “crow’s feet.” Neurotoxins, such as Botox® or Dysport® work by decreasing muscle activity so that the muscle does not fold the skin and create wrinkles. Although the effect is temporary, usually 3-4 months duration, the quality, convenience and safety of this treatment are hard to beat. Development of excess eyelid skin is the hallmark of a tired looking eye. A surgical procedure known as blepharoplasty is the only effective treatment. For the upper eyelids, blepharoplasty involves removal of extra skin, muscle and fat. The scar is positioned along the upper lid crease. After surgery, patients will frequently comment that the operation “opened my eyes.”
Lifestyle
The lower eyelids tend to develop wrinkled extra skin, puff y fat pads, and a tear trough crease (an oblique line which extends downward from the eye). To address these changes, an incision is usually placed just below the eyelashes to allow removal of excess skin and fat. Modern procedures focus on maintenance of volume to avoid a hollow, aged look. Fat may be moved from an area of excess, such as a puff y eyelid, downward to decrease a deep tear trough. The area underneath the eyelid may be restored with transfer of fat from some other body area (fat grafting) or with a dermal filler such as Restylane®, Juvederm® or others. The goals are to smooth the eyelid and blend the transition from the eyelid to the cheek as seamlessly as possible into a youthful contour. Surgery and injectable medications may be used independently or together. Both should create a natural appearing, youthful eye shape.

health report
BY WILL YODER, DMD YODER DENTISTRY YODERDENTISTRY.COM 859-269-5696
When people think about their oral health, often teeth and gums are the only things that come to mind. But the truth is, our lower teeth are attached to one of the most complex joints in our bodies, our TMJs (temporomandibular joints). And our TMJs are connected to many muscles in the face and neck. Every time we talk, chew, open and close, even in our sleep, our teeth and TMJs are working together. When the upper and lower teeth don’t meet together evenly, it causes unbalanced pressure in the joints. This uneven pressure can cause some people to experience head and neck pain, muscle soreness and headaches. Other people may experience no pain, but the unbalanced stress can cause their teeth to wear, break, rotate or become loose. Our mouths are an incredibly complex system that is in constant movement, and when the whole system isn’t functioning correctly, we begin to see it break down. As a medical professional, I feel that it is my responsibility to continually seek answers for the people I serve. When I started practicing dentistry, I quickly noticed that there was a population of patients who were widely underserved. A segment of people who are left spinning their wheels with unanswered TMJ pain and neverending dental issues - people who had an unstable chewing system. Rather than patch things as they broke or give TMJ patients medications, I went on a quest to find answers. This led me to the Texas Center for Occlusal Studies and Minimally Invasive Dentistry residency program, where I studied what a healthy chewing system looks like. What I found is when our jaw joints are stabilized and our teeth meet together evenly, it removes all extra tension, alleviating jaw, head and neck pain. I’ve seen many patients get permanent relief as quickly as a week, and these were people who had been taking medications, using botox and getting nerve blocks for years. My mission is to help people find the cause of their symptoms and eliminate the problem so that they can enjoy a lifetime of pain-free dental health.

05.06.17 Nick and Ally Holt love to host family and friends, but their favorite party of the year is their Kentucky Derby party. When it came time to pick a wedding date, the Holts were quick to agree on May 6, 2017, or the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby. While picking a wedding date was easy, living in Louisville and planning a Kentucky Derby Day wedding proved to be more difficult. Ally was born and raised in Greenup County, Kentucky, and Nick was born in Tennessee, but raised in Louisville. The couple now resides in Louisville, so they wanted to find a wedding venue that not only tied in their love for Kentucky, but also was conveniently located for their guests. “While we love having our Derby party, and we wanted to embrace our Kentucky roots, we knew a Louisville wedding over Derby weekend was not going to be possible,” Ally said. “I stumbled upon the Moundale Manor and Winchester Opera House at a bridal show in Lexington and fell in love. It’s absolutely stunning and classic Kentucky.” Luckily Winchester, Ky., which is where the Moundale Manor and Winchester Opera House are located, is a halfway point between where Nick and Ally were raised. While the weather was questionable on Derby Day 2017, luckily for the Holts, they were able to have their ceremony on the front lawn of the Moundale Manor as planned. Ally and Nick wanted kept the ceremony décor classic because it was important to Nick and Ally that the wedding ceremony be about them, not the Derby. As Ally explained though, the reception is where they really wanted to celebrate and showcase the Derby theme.
86
May 2018 | TopsInLex.com
“I wanted the reception to feel like Old Hollywood Glamour, but Kentucky style,” Ally said. “To me, that is the definition of the Kentucky Derby.” Throughout the reception, Ally and Nick included subtle (and not so subtle) nods to the Kentucky Derby, like a life-size horse statue with a rose blanket draped across its back and enclosed by boxwood shrubs. “We wanted the horse to be our ‘wow factor’ and to resemble the winner’s circle of the actual Derby,” said Nick. “There were two signature drinks for guests: one was called ‘The Winchester’ and the other, ‘The Lilly’. Bartenders placed a drink stirrer in each that was topped with a tiny gold horse.” The seating arrangement was framed in an ornate gold frame and marked with the calligraphy of Haley Michelle Designs. Guests were seated at tables named after each horse that ran in the 2017 Kentucky Derby, so Haley waited until the last possible moment to put the finishing touches on the table numbers to account for any horses that scratched. During the cocktail hour, there was a live showing of the Derby projected onto a wall in the ballroom and each table was encouraged to cheer for the horse that matched their seat assignment. Guests at the winning table were each awarded a rose lei. Making their guests feel special was most important to Nick and Ally. For couples planning a wedding, the Holts suggest thinking of some special things that you can do to make your guests feel extra welcome. “The little details are what make your wedding day so special,” Ally said. “Once you’ve covered all the big ticket items, then really think about what little details you can add that will make your wedding unique to you and your partner. My mom and I made welcome gift baskets for all of the outof-town guests. Each basket included a note from me and Nick, local restaurant recommendations, Derby glasses, local food and drink like Ruth Hunt candies and Bulleit Bourbon, and a 2017 Kentucky Derby program. Our friends and family who weren’t familiar with the Derby or Kentucky really loved and appreciated this special touch.”

A look inside at what designer, Lee Ro bin son c alls hom e. Lee W. Robinson is known for the gift of turning the ordinary into impeccable. As the owner of Lee W. Robinson Company, a full-service design firm in Louisville, his talent has touched a wide variety of client’s homes. He has the innate ability to see the value of the space and rise to the challenge of transforming it into a work of art. That talent exceeds expectation when it is his own family home. Every house tells a story, but some have more stories to tell. Malvern House, a historic home in Louisville, exudes good Southern charm and a deep family history that spans multiple generations. Lee’s children are the sixth generation to live in the home. Its story isn’t finished and Lee along with his wife Babs, have made it their mission to continue its legacy.

The land for Malvern House was acquired by George Gaulbert, the greatgreat-grandfather of current resident Babs Rodes Robinson. Gaulbert, a Louisville businessman, acquired the property in the 1890s. He was the founder of the Peaslee-Gaulbert Corporation, one of the largest paint manufacturers in the country, inventors of ready-mix paint. This company is credited with helping to rebuild the South after reconstruction by enabling people to paint their own homes. Originally, the piece of property stretched from Brownsboro Road to the Ohio River. (While the property still overlooks the river, a large portion of it was sold to create Interstate 71.) It totaled three square miles, which at the time was onetenth of Jefferson County. George and Hattie Gaulbert did not build a house on the property. Their only child, Carrie Gaulbert Cox – Babs’ great grandmother - and her husband, local businessman Attilla Cox, Jr., actually built Malvern House. They hired Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park in Manhattan and all of Louisville’s park system, to design the landscaping.
Then famed New York architect Ogden Codman, Jr., was hired to design their house. Codman had previously designed The Breakers, owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, and Kykuit, owned by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Codman’s work on Malvern House for the Cox family would be the only project he ever did in Kentucky. Codman completed his design of the house in 1914, but the house was not finished until 1922. Carrie and Attilla Cox, Jr., had one daughter, Harriett Cox who married, John Collis. Harriett and John raised their daughters at Malvern including Babs’s mother, Barbara Collis. In the 1960’s Harriett, Babs’ grandmother, reduced the size of the home significantly, removing 8,000 square feet, including the entire third floor. Babs grew up over the hill from Malvern House where her grandmother lived until her death in 1992. The home was then sold to a non-family member, Helen Combs, former wife of Kentucky Governor, Bert Combs. Babs and Lee purchased the home from Mrs. Combs in 2007.

Babs and Lee were always hopeful they would one day own Malvern House and when the opportunity presented itself, they were thrilled to be in possession of an important piece of her family history. With his hands in a variety of design projects, one wonders how Lee’s ideas transitioned into his own personal space. “This was a labor of love taking two years to complete as it needed a lot of work and updating since it had been empty for a time.
“
“My favorite room is the foyer because it truly is unlike anything seen in Kentucky. It is very French. Something you might see in Paris,” says Lee. A grand, marble staircase allows for a stylish settee to linger on the landing. Designed as a rectangle and spanning fortyfive feet in length, the space is anchored by black-and-white marble floors, accentuated with limestone block walls and brightened by a lavish chandelier. It is the prelude to what guests will experience upon entering the rest of the home.

“Babs had her memories of the home and, of course, there were family photographs that we could use to help implement our vision,” Lee explains. He was able to transform a small utilitarian kitchen and servants’ dining quarters into a modern kitchen along with converting a screened-in porch into a stunning music room all the while honoring the legacy of the home. He accomplished all of this while still paying homage to the integrity of the home.

The grandness of the dining room certainly emulates the days of long ago. Much of the furniture used in this space has been in the family for generations. Lee added the chandelier to continue the elegant theme along with silk Shantung fabric that is threaded throughout the room. He opted to use antique breakfast tables instead of the traditional sideboards for their dual functionality. They can be pulled out and joined with the dining room table to comfortably accommodate twenty-four guests. A Chinese chest on stand, an English piece, is original to the home and resides in the same place it has been for over ninety years. The dining room table has a bit of its own story. Once belonging to the Williams Shallcross Speed family – William was the son of James Breckinridge Speed who is the namesake of the Speed Art Museum in Louisville - who were close friends with Babs’s great-grandparents, the dining room table carries significant fondness in finding a place in this home.
The adjoining master bath is a modern space with heated floors and beautiful granite countertops (supplied by Quality Stone and Granite). The closets and other storage areas were designed by The Closet Factory, and the cabinetry by Terry Burns. The tiling was provided by Louisville Tile.

Ogden Codman, Jr., the original architect of the home, was known for a treatise that he co-wrote with famous author Edith Wharton. Published in 1897, the treatise, entitled The Decoration of Houses, which Lee refers to as the “bible for interior design, outlined specific rules for the proper planning and finishing of interior residential spaces. All of these elements were put into play in the design of the Malvern House. Lee also blended his own design components, using fresh fabrics to rejuvenate furnishings, and windows and gravitating to other color palettes that were less formal than what was originally used. Interestingly enough, Codman didn’t use chandeliers in the home, instead he gravitated to wall sconces. Lee changed that dynamic by adding elegant chandeliers to intensify the luxurious feel.

Instead of going traditional and only using the built-in bookcases for books, we decided to incorporate a collection of porcelain handed down through Babs’ family, like dessert sets that are no longer being used, and we mixed them in with the books. This allowed for pops of color to be integrated.

The morning room - as it is brightened by the morning light each day - is an opulent space that showcases art and collectibles that have been in the family for generations. Art complements the mahogany paneled walls from an old English estate. The entire room was disassembled in England and moved piece by piece into Malvern House. Each piece of art is a storyteller. Many pieces in the house are reminiscent of their travels, visits with notables and other cherished memories. Lee’s desk resides in the back with the television at the other end of the room cleverly hidden away in an antique armoire. Period altar sticks are creatively transformed into lamps.

Stark wallpaper layers the walls in the music room. “This is where we could really add some color. We wanted this to lend itself to a party vibe. This room is really inspired by the party pavilions of the 1920s, says Lee. Formerly a screened-in porch, Lee created a bright and airy space that is filled with light and a piano ready to entertain. Black and white marble floors and Oriental influences lend a sophisticated yet livable vibe to the room.

Codman designed not one but two separate guest bathrooms on the first floor, similar to a private club which Lee used as a canvas to create visually alluring spaces. The ladies’ bathroom is elegant and refined. It includes a sophisticated sit-down vanity, mirrored panels and a chandelier. Lee added the current furniture and silver leaf wallpaper by Stark. The gentlemen’s bathroom is highlighted by black marble floors and intense green hues that is grounded with an ornate mirror and sconces.

With many of Frederick Law Olmsted’s landscape elements still in place, the details of the 15 acre exterior are just as magnificent as the interior. As previously mentioned, Olmsted was the original landscape designer of Malvern House and of Central Park in Manhattan. An antique well head from 1614 was one of the family’s many purchases during their European travels. Decades later, the magnificant piece continues to be one of Malvern House’s greatest treasures.

Malvern House is a piece of living history that Lee and Babs have lovingly brought back to life. They have designed the ideal venue to entertain family and friends along with creating new memories with their own children, the sixth generation to live in the home. And while they have succeeded in honoring the family legacy, they have also created a home that balances comfort, style, and a generous helping of glamour.

T
he name says it all. In The Moment is a shade that evokes sanctuary, relaxation and calm. This subtle blend of blue, gray and green invites you to disconnect, recharge and be mindful of the here and now. While In The Moment would be a natural choice for a bedroom or guest suite, it can offer balance and peace to anywhere you would like to invite guests and family to unwind with you. It’s an interesting choice for a formal sitting room or dining room: guests will want to linger just a little bit longer, enjoying dinner and pleasant conversation. It can also offer a sense of serenity in hallways or laundry rooms. The earthy, alpine quality of In The Moment lends itself to pairing with rich, autumnal hues like Equilibrium and Life is Good: because of this, it can be a beautiful home exterior color. It also goes well with Graylac, an intriguing shade of smoked lilac.

median home prices Nationwide trends show that more and more people are moving further south and there is no doubt that Lexington is one of the cities feeling that influx. In the last decade alone, Fayette County has seen an estimated population increase of almost 40,000 people — that means there are more people who have moved to Lexington since 2007 alone than the populations of 95 counties in Kentucky! While this is wonderful news for the city, it is causing a strain on the local housing market. Prices are on the rise and inventory is decreasing. Based on LBAR sales, from 2016 to 2017, we saw a 6.3% increase in median home prices, a 15% decrease in average days on market, and the median price per square foot has topped out at just over $100/sf. tips & trends
TOP TIPS FOR BUYERS 01. Be sure you are pre-approved before you start seriously looking at houses. You want to be able to make the strongest offer you can when you fall in love with that perfect house!
it’s a seller’s
market The average Days on Market
has gone down
15% since 2016.
02. Hire a Realtor who will work on your behalf to help you find the best properties that fit your needs — oftentimes your agent will help you discover a neighborhood you didn’t know about or show you a home before it hits the market! 03. Focus on the area you want to be in more than on the house itself. The house can always be updated to fit your wants & needs, but you usually can’t do much about the land around you. As they say, real estate is all about location, location, location.
TOP TIPS FOR sellers 01. Basic staging and cleaning goes a long way. It is important that buyers can see themselves living in your home and having too many personal items makes that hard to do. 02. Don’t get greedy with pricing. It’s important to consider the comps and price your house according to those rather than what you want for it. If you inflate your price, you’re going to turn buyers off or run into appraisal issues. 03. Be prepared and flexible with showings as soon as your Realtor lists the property!

Why You Need a
REALTOR in Today’s Market More than Ever!
With homes moving so quickly in the market, it is more important than ever to have representation. Local agents know the market, understand the comps, and have the connections and skills to help you sell and buy a home aster. Without representation, it is easy to get caught up in the moment and skip some of the obvious measures that will protect you as a buyer or seller. Hiring a Realtor helps mitigate these risks and allows you to have confidence in your real estate decision!
Realtors owe a fiduciary responsibility to their clients. This means a number of things: A Realtor is contractually bound to put his client’s interest above all other interests, including his own. As a licensed professional who is deemed to have skills and expertise superior to those of an average person, a Realtor is obligated to use those skills when pursuing his client’s affairs. Unless illegal, it is the responsibility of an agent to follow the instructions of his client even if the agent does not necessarily agree with said instructions. When discussing a client’s transaction with an outside party, a Realtor is obligated to keep confidential anything that could hurt his client’s bargaining position (except for material facts or anything that could be deemed misrepresentation)

Back in 2006, Kitty Lane and eleven other investors started Keller Williams Bluegrass Realty in the back of a Subway sandwich shop. Twelve years later, Keller Williams has been named the #1 real estate company in the United States. With over 60 years of combined experience, the eight members of The Lane Team each bring a wealth of expertise. “Through the team atmosphere, we are able to provide support to each other, as well as our clients,” Kitty explained. “By having multiple trained and experienced professionals working together toward one common goal, we can always put our clients and their families first to provide fantastic service. Why hire one agent when you can have an entire team working for you?” Former UK basketball player Ravi Moss is the newest addition to The Lane Team. He joins Diane Scott, Kitty Lane, Brandon Hedinger, Savannah Cloe, Chelsea Sligh,
Blake Ferguson and Meredith Lane: they are each motivated by the relationships they develop through their work. “It is an honor to be able to help these families find a home they will make memories in, assist individuals going through a multitude of transitions in their lives while helping investors buy, sell and renovate properties and more.” Kitty added, “Being a real estate agent is really about serving the people involved, and we do not take that responsibility lightly.” The Lane Team loves serving the Central Kentucky real estate market, both through real estate transactions and by being of service to local charitable organizations. “We are surrounded by beautiful horse farms, but we also have fabulous suburban neighborhoods and a robust transitioning downtown urban area,” Kitty said. “There is a lot to offer in this community and not only do we love working here, we love living here as well.” #25509

Stevonn PAGE
OCTOBER 28, 1971 TO APRIL 12, 2018
S
tevonn “Stevie” Page was a cherished wife, mother, daughter, grandmother and friend to many. She was a Realtor at Milestone Realty Consultants, specializing as a Ball Homes Representative. Stevie had a passion for the business. Her passing has left her co-workers shocked and saddened. Mary Layton, Stevie’s co-worker and one of her closest confidants said, “Stevie lit up the room with her infectious laugh. She was always smiling and upbeat whenever you saw her. She was the most genuine person I have ever known. Stevie loved God first. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her clients loved her, as did we. The world was a better place with her in it.” Mike Wheatley, Principal Broker at Milestone Realty Consultants, released the following statement: “Stevie had a joy inside her that was extraordinary, and she brightened every room she entered. I know that Stevie would want the whole world to know first and foremost that she loved Jesus Christ and her life was forever changed through her relationship with Him. She lived out her life by exhibiting over and over that her priorities were God first, followed by family, then the rest. Our entire work family is grieving along with her family, but we are finding peace in the fact that Stevie was firmly rooted in her faith, and we have no doubt as to where she is now. I could go on forever with examples of Stevie reflecting God’s light wherever she went…she will be sorely missed.” The TOPS family extends our deepest condolences to Stevie’s family, friends and coworkers.

family finance how to:
GET PRE-APPROVED FOR A HOME LOAN Although the homebuying process can be somewhat overwhelming, there are some steps you can take to ease that process. One of those initial steps is to get pre-qualified for a home loan: this pre-approval step will be helpful and will ease your mind as you start looking for your dream home! Here's how to get a jump start on the process: Gather all of your personal financial documents Such documents would include the most recent two years of W2s, two years of personal federal tax returns (1040s), the past 30 days of paystubs, and the most recent two months of your bank statements and any brokerage or retirement account statements.
prepare a list of your debts and assets For debts, prepare a list that includes current rent or mortgage, installment loans, auto loans, credit cards, student loans, etc. Create an itemized list of assets as well. Your lender will want to know which debts are current obligations and which assets you have available for down payment, closing costs and pre-paid items such as property taxes and homeowner’s insurance.
Prepare a personal monthly written budget What is a comfortable mortgage payment based on your budget? Your lender will pre-qualify you for the maximum amount they think you can afford, but is that number really comfortable for you?
Research lenders for a home mortgage When getting pre-qualified for a mortgage loan, you will want to consider several things when selecting a lender. What type of products and loan programs do they offer? There are particular loan programs that may fit your needs better. Ask the lender about fixed rates, adjustable rate loans, government loans (FHA, VA, RHS, KHC), or construction loans if you’re building a home. Each lender will have a different menu of programs. Does the lender have programs specific to various types of properties: single-family, multi-family, condominium, or townhome? Each of these types of loans will have different terms. Does the lender service their own loans or sell them off to a different company? This can be important to you if you want to handle your payments and correspondence locally rather out of town or state. Don’t be afraid to ask!
Apply for the pre-qualification Does the lender you choose require you to come in and apply in person (highly recommended if you are a first-time homebuyer), over the phone or online? Some lenders have the capabilities for you to apply and pre-qualify online from the convenience of your home, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Usually the pre-qualification process can be finished the same day you apply, or within 24 hours depending on the type of mortgage for which you are applying. Super Mom Beth Hourigan says her normal is crazy busy. While she juggles raising a family and owning a spa, Hourglass Lash + Skin Bar, she says the trick is not to drop anything. Wife to Jon Hourigan, a colorectal surgeon at the Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky Hospital, and mother to Mariabella (9), Jon William (3) and Elizabeth Swann (4 months), the Hourigans always prioritize family time in their busy schedules. “We eat dinner as a family and give thanks each night,” Beth says. “We love to cook and bake together, jump on our trampolene or play outside. My children have serious nut allergies, so we cook together almost daily. Our kitchen is the most used room in our house and when we are lucky, everyone gets involved.” In the Hourigan’s downtime, the family enjoys road trips and visiting family and friends. Thanks to Jon’s love of driving, the family takes lots of road trips to the Newport Aquarium, Cincinnati Zoo, Dollywood, 30A area in Florida, Nashville to visit old friends or Louisville to visit family and stop by the nut-free bakery. Beth’s days are packed full from getting the children to school on time, running her business and then getting the kids to all of their activities that range from competitive cheerleading to soccer and baseball, but she makes a point to spend 20 minutes alone with each child every day.

Beth makes it a priority to spend quality time with each of her children and suggests other moms to try and do the same. As she says, a mother’s time and love is really all children want, so take the time and give the love. “Some days are hectic, so we may spend a few minutes alone in the car on the way to an activity or at bedtime, but I definitely try to make them happen,” she says. “Bedtime is a special time in our home. Every night I read with my kids and I always want to know what was the best part of their day. I love those quiet minutes alone with each of my children.” “Even if it’s only 20 minutes every single day, snuggle with your child and listen to them, especially as they get older,” she says. “My kids are my absolute pride and joy and I would move mountains for them if I could. I love watching them succeed and feel confident in themselves.” Like many moms, Beth says her biggest challenge is mommy guilt and time management. With a thriving new business, a husband with a busy career and three kids at various ages and stages in life, some days are so busy that Beth wishes she could push a pause button. Balancing time with with work, social, health and family obligations can be overwhelming, but Beth makes time to workout at least four to five days per week. “Taking care of myself is important so I can be active and keep up with my kids,” she says. “I want to soak up their little faces when they are experiencing new things or telling me a story about their day. I want to be totally in the moment. That’s tough for me because I am always juggling so much each day. I try, but I am definitely not perfect. And I’m not afraid to ask for help from my mom and sitters when I need it.” Beth says that the title of “Super Mom” is very flattering, but admits some days aren’t so super. “Some days are far from perfect, but I try to remind myself that I am only one person and I can only do so much. We laugh a lot and try to keep things light around here.”

Allergies
M
any Kentuckians suffer from seasonal allergies. This suffering includes our furry friends. In fact, some experts cite Kentucky as the worst state for allergies and debate whether Louisville or Lexington is the most unfavorable city for this affliction. The type of vegetation grown, pollen production and environmental conditions such as rainfall, temperature and the length of season determine this ranking. A pet’s body releases the chemical histamine when exposed to an allergen causing a physiological response to a perceived, but false invader. This release of histamine results in the expression of a variety of uncomfortable signs and symptoms. Unfortunately, both cats and dogs can experience the displeasure of seasonal allergies. Signs that your pet may be experiencing allergen discomfort most commonly affect their skin. These include a rash or red, irritated skin particularly on the belly, between their toes or around their anus, hot spots, hair loss or red and inflamed skin around the mouth, chin, or paws. Your cat or dog may also experience red, puff y eyes, inflamed and smelly ears, sneezing or a runny nose. Animals diagnosed with asthma or FIV are at greater risk for respiratory concerns during seasonal allergy season. Symptoms your pet may exhibit indicating a seasonal allergy include constant scratching that increases after spending time outdoors. They may scoot across the floor on their hind end or shake their head due to ear irritation or discomfort. Your pet may lick and bite their paws or belly or rub their face and body on the carpet or along baseboards. Cats may excessively groom.

You can attempt to reduce the effects of seasonal allergies for both you and your pets with the regular dusting of surfaces, vacuuming of carpets and mopping of floors. Install a HEPA filter in your home to reduce allergens and minimize the amount of time you keep your windows open, particularly during high-pollen hours and days. To specifically help your pet’s environmental allergies lessen the amount of time they spend outdoors. If you own an outdoor cat, consider changing their habits to those of an indoor cat. If this is not possible or you own a dog, be sure to wipe their paws and bodies off with a damp cloth hypoallergenic, pet-specific wet wipe after they come inside. You can also use apple-cider vinegar to rinse their feet or clean their ears using a dampened cotton ball. Do NOT apply vinegar to any open wounds as it will burn and cause them pain. Give your pets regular baths with a gentle shampoo recommended by your veterinarian to wash off pollen and other allergens. Do NOT administer any over-the-counter allergy medications to your pet without consulting a veterinarian. If these home-remedies are ineffective, your pet’s symptoms worsen, or your pet has a diagnosed respiratory disease such as asthma, schedule an appointment to be seen by your regular, primary veterinarian to discuss options to alleviate their seasonal allergy symptoms. Your doctor may prescribe oral or topical medications. They may also recommend additional testing or allergy shots. Similar to humans, the effects of allergies may not be cured, but with timely medical attention they can be managed allowing both you and your pet to enjoy the beauty and rebirth of Spring.

MARIKKA’S Restaurant and Bierstube Reopens By Michelle Aiello | Photos by Keni Parks
F
or the 15 months that Marikka’s was undergoing its expansion, Lexingtonians craving traditional German food and beer were simply out of luck. But now, the wait is over, and Southland Drive’s original destination restaurant is back and better than ever. “This has always been a dream of theirs, something they wanted from the very beginning,” said the restaurant’s namesake Marikka Tackett of her husband Doug Tackett and son Doug Junior. For those not in the know, it was an unsettling sight to see the former restaurant demolished and the space left vacant for so long. Many wondered if Marikka’s was ever coming back. But the expansion, 25 years in the making, was worth the wait. The gorgeous, 10,000 square foot beer hall has seating for 500, along with pool, foosball, shuffleboard and darts. Massive refrigerators lining the bar showcase hundreds of brands of beer from all over the globe. Other additions include a private events space, six brand new volleyball courts and a stage for live music. “We plan to start with live trivia and hope to offer live entertainment every week or every other week, said Director of Operations Morgan Middleton.

The new building has two entrances –one for the beer hall and one for the restaurant. The building was designed by Rebecca Burnworth, who was also responsible for other industrial-chic spaces like Goodfella’s Distillery and Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge in the Distillery District on Manchester Street. Extra long tables, chandeliers and a mix of exposed brick and shiplap contribute to the refined but casual atmosphere. "The idea was to make this giant, cavernous space look as much like a German bier hall as possible," said Middleton.

The Tackett family owns and leases several properties in the Southland Drive shopping center, so the square footage has always existed. “The property was there all along, but because it didn’t have a storefront, no one really knew the space existed. The footprint in the rear is the same, everything else changed,” explained Middleton, who in addition to her marketing and event scheduling duties, also manages the volleyball leagues. With six beach volleyball courts –three indoor and three outdoor—it’s now possible to accommodate leagues year-round. The idea for volleyball, Middleton explained, was Doug Junior’s. “They were at the old South Park location, and the staff and some of the regulars were itching for a recreational activity, so he went to Walmart and bought a volleyball net and a big floodlight.” With a few parking cones and a picnic table, Marikka’s very first volleyball game was born. “It was very humble at first, but people just loved it,” said Marikka. So much, in fact, that their first league began the next year in 1993. One of the first restaurants in Lexington to offer a huge list of beers, Marikka’s list of hard-to-find imports and microbrews has grown to over 1,000 selections. The restaurant also plans to roll out a few of few of their own microbrews sometime in the future and will sell traditional German growlers that customers can have filled on-site and take home. The brewery and its inner workings will be viewable through large glass windows. Also overlooking the beer hall is a private event space, the “Jackson Douglas Room”, named after Doug Junior’s 8-month-old son. As for the food – guests will be happy to know that the menu has remained unchanged. The traditional German recipes from Hanau, where Marikka was born and raised, like sauerbraten, homemade sausages, sauerkraut, schnitzels and soft pretzels are still available and prepared by the same kitchen staff. The dimly lit restaurant area features intimate seating and a collection of beautiful art pieces depicting traditional coats-of-arms and other German imagery. Although they reflect German culture, they are painted on reclaimed wood—a nod to the Tacketts’ Kentucky roots. Marikka Tackett explained that before moving to Kentucky, she and Doug traveled to the United States many times for business and vacation. They visited Tennessee and South Carolina a few times before Doug’s job relocated him to Kentucky in 1987. When the company wanted to move the family to Alabama, Marikka put her foot down. “I said, ‘No, I like it here!’” she remembered. They opened the restaurant in 1991, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Bourbon

G
iven that Kentucky is the state that birthed it, it’s no wonder that we’re all such fans of bourbon. Whether you like it neat or shaken up, you can find great bourbon all over Lexington. This month, we’re exploring five spots that have set out to shine the spotlight on “America’s Native Spirit” through distinctive bourbon selections or truly imaginative cocktails.
CENTRO
ELKHORN TAVERN
With an industrial-inspired interior that makes the most of the space’s historic brickwork and tile, Centro offers a chic space to slide in after work or between songs during Thursday Night Live. They offer a hefty list of bourbons including several rare pours, but their Bacon Old Fashioned is a true delight: it’s made with Knob Creek Smoked Maple bourbon, blood orange bitters and Luxardo cherries, served with house made candied bacon.
Located in the Pepper Campus, the interior makes the most of the industrial, rustic vibe of the area with natural wood accents and copper bar tops and ceilings. As the taproom for Barrel House Distilling, they offer house-made bourbon along with other spirits, beer and wine. Their Big Ass Mule is made with Big Ass Bourbon, ginger syrup, lime juice and ginger beer, served with lime.

PRICHARD & BAIL COCKTAIL BAR Hartfield & Co. is a small batch distillery that was the first licensed distillery in Bourbon County since prohibition. Their cocktail bar, Prichard and Bail, offers a curated bar experience. Whitewashed brick walls, rustic wooden tables and a minimalist aesthetic makes it a cool spot to enjoy truly great spirits. They serve up cocktails that were carefully created to bring out the best in their product, as well as local beer and hand-selected wines. 108 East 4th Street in Paris, KY hartfieldandcompany.com
BLUEGRASS TAVERN
BOURBON ON RYE
Consistently ranked among the best bars in the South, Bluegrass Tavern boasts one of the biggest bourbon menus anywhere, with hundreds of selections including rare bottles. The bartenders are all handy with a recommendation for bourbon explorers. Love cocktails? Regulars swear that Bluegrass Tavern’s Manhattan is one of the best around.
This prohibition-era style bar is a gorgeous, historic location with a 28-foot-long flamed mahogany bar from the 1880s. Stamped tin ceilings, mosaic tile floors and beautiful lighting fixtures make the space both chic and inviting. But it’s their vast selection of bourbons and artisanal cocktail ingredients that make this spot shine. The menu changes seasonally, offering guests something new every time they stop in.

Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company
Vienna lager may picks BY mark
Why Mark Enjoys this Beer…. I am definitely a lager guy, now don’t get me wrong I enjoy the ales from time to time too, but there is something about the time, effort and extra patience it takes with a lager that helps me appreciate it more. I was excited to hear that Devil’s Backbone Brewing has made its wait into Kentucky. I’ve had their beer several times while out on the east coast and really became a fan of their beer. This Vienna Lager holds true to its roots, the beautiful copper color has an amber hue that pours to a thick and foamy off white head. The aroma of fresh bread and toasted malt is full and upfront from the moment the pour begins. The beer is chalk full of toasted malt flavor on the front, a hint of caramel sweetness as it settles and then a slight taste of orange zest just before the beer finishes smooth and clean. Devil’s Backbone may be from Virginia but their Vienna Lager is spot on German style, this beer is off the charts with flavor and is definitely a great session beer that you can enjoy all year long. If you have not had the pleasure, take the time to do so, you will be very glad you did.
style: Vienna Style Lager
hops: Northern Brewer & Saaz
alcohol by volume: 5.2% | IBU: 18
taste profile: With its amber chestnut colored good looks and smooth malty finish, Vienna Lager was an obvious choice to put into package. It blends color and flavor without heaviness or bitterness. Just as Vienna Lagers historically inspired Munich’s Oktoberfest beers to evolve, this amber lager has evolved since we opened in 2008 into the award winning beer it is today. Experience the taste and tradition.

food pairings: Bright and versatile, this Unoaked Chardonnay can be enjoyed on its own or served with light appetizers. For heartier fare, pair with a Caesar salad with grilled chicken, a bay scallop pan roast, or a mushroom and brie pizza.

NBA DRAFT:
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander SHAI, WE HARDLY KNEW YE.
BBN
Like so many John Calipari signees, he streaked across the Kentucky basketball landscape, like a big blue meteor – burning hot and fast on his way to a land of riches. It’s become the norm rather than the exception for at least a couple of Wildcats to play one and then be done with college basketball, but the departure of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander might be the most surprising.
Green went down in early January with a strained back muscle. In stepped Gilgeous-Alexander, who’d been playing significant minutes already. Only now, he had the keys to the Cadillac – and Calipari made certain he stayed behind the wheel.
He was, indeed, a highly-touted recruit but when it came to hype, he was lacking. In fact, when he joined the UK class of signees at the end of the 2017 season, he was considered a backup to the next Calipari Point Guard.
In his first two games as the Man in Charge, he played 39 minutes both against Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
That would be Quade Green, the next UK floor general, in the mold of John Wall, Marquis Teague, Brandon Knight, De’Aaron Fox. Only, Mother Nature had other ideas.
SGA did his best to spread the ball among his teammates but there were times that just wasn’t working, so the 6-foot-6 guard with the 7-foot wingspan did what he does best – slithering through defenders to amazingly open finger-rolls. And as he drew opposing defenses closer, teammates found themselves with more room to breathe on the perimeter – guys like Hamidou Diallo and Kevin Knox, who joined SGA among NBA Draft hopefuls. Knox is physically stronger, with more of a reputation as an outside shooter who can also finish at the rim. Diallo has outrageous explosiveness, when it comes both to quickness and leaping ability. Knox and Diallo both were expected to treat the entrance to Rupp Arena as little more than a revolving door to the NBA; such were their reputations when they arrived. Gilgeous-Alexander? Shoot, the kid was cut from his high school “junior” team in Hamilton, Ontario. But he just kept working – both with his teammates and on his own. Head down, eyes up, future bright. “Shai doesn’t want attention,” said forward P.J. Washington. “He just wants to put the work in and wants people to judge him on results.” And apparently, the judges like what they see. “He’s playing like a lottery pick,” Green told reporters during the NCAA tournament. “He’s going to do great things after this.”

And he’ll do it with the same attitude he brought from the Great White North. “I’ve just been trying to embrace the role and be there for these guys and try to help the team win,” he said. Unfortunately, SGA’s time in his only NCAA tournament was cut short by an upset loss to Kansas State. But his legacy will live on, as long as Calipari wears the whistle at Kentucky. The man who brought him to Lexington never missed a chance to tell reporters about SGA’s earlymorning workouts, dogged determination in the weight room and devotion to academics. “Shai’s development is a story I’ll tell our players for the rest of my career,” Calipari said. It’s a story that won’t be ending any time soon. by Dick Gabriel BigBlueInsider.com
