A Look Into Keeneland's Horse Betting Guide

With Breeders' quickly approaching we're making sure our fashion is in tip-top shape... so why not fine-tune our horse betting skills as well? Because let's be honest, we're all hoping to come out and win a little cash!

Keeneland is our home for horse racing so of course, they've compiled the best tips and tricks when it comes to playing the ponies and betting. Live racing at Keeneland is exciting whether you make a bet or not. But it's even more fun when you cash a winning ticket. Use this guide to learn the basics of betting – from how to choose your picks, to how to place your bet at the window and more.

How-To Read a Program

(because let's be honest... there's a lot going on there)

Approximate Post This is shown in the top left corner and is the estimated time the race will run.

Program Number Refers to the number the horse is listed under in the program. This is the number used for wagering purposes.

Morning Line Odds Refers to the odds set by the track oddsmaker. This is an estimate of what the oddsmaker believes the chances are of each horse to win. Jockey Stats The Jockey Stats allow you to become familiar with the jockeys. The stats provide the number of starts and fi nishes in the top three this meet. Silk Colors Silks are worn by the jockey in a race to represent a horse’s owner. Look here to identify your pick’s silk colors to easily fi nd them during the race. Distance Meter This image shows the distance and surface the horses will be running for that race. If the race is run on dirt, the outside circle is darkened. If it is run on turf, the inside circle is darkened. Exotic Wagers These are wagers offered in the current race and are listed along the top of the program page. Race Type Each program will list the class level of the race (Ex., Maiden, Claiming, Allowance, Stakes).
