hen Sarah and Josh McMahon sought to build their forever home, the couple had a few must-haves, including a comfortable and custom space to fit themselves and their two daughters, Kennedi, 8, and Harper, 4. The home they chose in the Brentwood neighborhood of Crestwood was built by Dave Ernst of Prestige Builders, who accommodated their list of wants and needs by constructing a 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom home on a corner lot. The McMahons moved into their modern farmhouse in May; with help from their designer Christy Maser, the couple created a clean, monochromatic space with custom features. Sarah wanted an open floor plan but with designated spaces for the kitchen and living room, so the home would “feel open but not too open,” she says. The kitchen includes all Cafe appliances, white cabinets from Willis Klein, and a Hawksmoore Cambria cream counter with taupe detailing. A glossy, porcelain tile backsplash and built-in coffee bar with floating shelves pull the room together. Oversized gold pendant lights from Brecher’s light the island, accompanied by Serena and Lily Riviera barstools. The dining room is designated by a shiplap on the walls and an eight-light Kichler chandelier.

The living room, like all rooms in the home, has whitewash light oak flooring from Flooring Gallery highlighting a black Heat & Glo shiplap fi replace. The ceiling holds three poplar wood beams, which lead to floating shelves, stained to match the flooring. Lighting in the living room includes Morland adjustable scotch brass sconces by Savoy House and a Capital matte black twelve-light chandelier from Brecher’s. The downstairs laundry room holds GE front-load appliances, white countertops and cabinets from Cornerstone Kitchen and Bath, a Blanco laundry sink, storage on the top and bottom of a sitting bench, and vertical wall hooks for backpacks. Flooring in the laundry room is a black and white pattern from Flooring Gallery, and the room is lit by sconces by Savoy House and a flush mount by Z-Lite. The master bedroom is furnished with a bed and end tables from Our House and a dresser from Ethan Allen. The smoked iron ceiling fan is actually a 65-inch outdoor fi xture by Minka Aire. The master bedroom walls and doors match the other rooms in the home--the walls are in Pure White and the doors are in Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams. The master bathroom, accessed through a sliding barn door by Cox Interior, is lit by gold sconces and has white cabinets by Cornerstone Kitchen and Bath with matte black Delta fi xtures. A hexagonal tile surrounds a Signature Hardware black tub with a Delta Freestanding tub fi ller in Champagne Bronze.

A pocket office is off the kitchen with modern Framburg brass Supernova lighting, a built-in L-shape desk and cabinet space. The basement holds a guest bedroom, office and storage, as well as a movie theatre screen from Century Entertainment & Furnishings, a Lovesack couch and a workout space. Going up the stairs, visitors will see a loft area directly at the top with a couch and television, lit by a five-light semi-flush mount by Z-Lite and shiplap on the walls. One upstairs bedroom was transformed into an art room with luxury vinyl tile for easy cleanup and rainbow decals on the wall. A toy room with built-in bench seating and bookshelves, a laundry room and the girls’ rooms are also on the top floor. The outside of the home includes a full bath built into the garage from the desk and porcelain tile surrounding the Novak fiberglass pool with a Trex deck with iron railing. The home is a perfect meeting space for friends, family, and neighbors, says Sarah. “We feel super blessed to be able to build a home and pick out all the selections,” she says. “We give God the glory to be in this place.” ■

Dream Home
This year, the staff of Southern Living Magazine chose Kentucky for the first time as the location for its annual Idea House. It’s called Riverbend, and it’s the fruit of the labor of a team of experts who met the challenge and brought a vision to reality. Before they could begin, however, the scene had to be set. Just as every painting needs a canvas, every dream home needs a landscape. That’s where Josh Myers comes in … BY ROCKO JEROME | COURTESY PHOTOS

masterful and multiple award-winning Landscape Architect, Josh worked real magic in the green, riverfront environs. He’s the Owner of Myers + Co. Landscape Architecture, founded on the principle of creating exceptional outdoor living spaces. The Riverbend design complements the house’s classic and timeless architecture, giving it a classic southern feel. The planting has a series of exciting layers. Specific plants were chosen from the Southern Living Plant Collection for seasonal and year-round interest, such as Oakland Holly, used to create an evergreen hedge. Baby Gem Boxwood created a low border, while Miss Lemon Abelia and White Wedding Hydrangea were incorporated into the garden. Large American Boxwoods were used in key locations to give the landscape a sense of eternal character, while an Evergreen Hedge encloses the motor court for a formal feel. American Hornbeam trees stand along the left side as the upper layer. Two large Natchez Crape Myrtle frame the view to the home’s front entrance and anchor the front garden, giving the landscape a sense of scale to the size of the home. A Natchez Crape Myrtle was also used to soften the left corner of the house and provide continuity with the other tree plantings. The lattice detail on the garage will allow the Climbing Hydrangea to create a beautiful green tapestry as it climbs the front façade of the garage. “The front side door entry gave us an opportunity to turn a short walkway into a small garden space that highlights a few different hardscape materials,” says Josh. “In classic Southern tradition, the home was built without gutters or downspouts. This created a unique design challenge. We designed an inground gutter system using perforated drainage pipe and gravel, topped with pea gravel. It became an architectural feature integrated into the garden around the perimeter of the home.”

Behind the house stands a beautiful covered porch with a fi replace, where you can take full advantage of the beautiful river views. The deck transitions to a brick patio, a space perfect for dining and entertaining. A parterre garden lined with Baby Gem Boxwood creates a connection to the back right garden, which is pea gravel lined and creates a cozy area. The garden was integrated into a space with another specimen Oak tree and two mature Dogwood trees. The garden is supported by a stone retaining wall, a remnant from the original estate that occupied the property, and has a limestone stepping stone path that leads to a bench that provides panoramic views of the Ohio River Valley. “The mature tree canopy created a great opportunity for a shade garden,” Josh says. Mountain Snow Pieris, Marvel Mahonia, Empress of China Dogwood, Tara Hydrangea, and several varieties of Hosta and Ferns were incorporated into the garden space. As is abundantly clear, landscaping is Josh’s passion. He regularly exceeds client expectations with a dedication to the philosophy that his work enhances and enriches lives. “We aim to create landscapes that capture the essence of a place while reflecting our clients’ style,” he says. “We provide creative and cost-effective design solutions catered to our client’s specific project goals and offer a complete range of design and construction services to add beauty and value to your home.” Collaborating closely with those he serves to understand specific needs for their landscape and outdoor living spaces, Josh believes in developing the kind of detailed, wellcrafted plans that are essential before the execution of any installation process. His work at Riverbend stands as absolute proof of his ability. ■

Closet Factory

hen Bill and Laura Weldon took ownership of Closet Factory in Louisville and Lexington this past July, the business came with a marquee design project already in progress: the closet system, decor, and staging for the Southern Living Idea House 2021 Main Closet. Once Southern Living settled on Louisville for this year’s Idea House, they turned to a member of their Custom Builder Program. Artisan Signature Homes designed and built the house “on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River” in a new development, The Breakers At Prospect. Based on a solid and successful working relationship, Artisan Signature Homes “had faith in us and gave us the opportunity,” says Bill of Closet Factory. Laura, a Louisville native, met Bill Weldon when he was a Cavalry Officer stationed at Fort Knox. All three of their children were born in Louisville. After moving around the country with GE, Ingersoll Rand/Trane, and most recently with Dematic, they are now moving back to Louisville from Tennessee, seeking a new business venture. Through their 30 years together, they have done numerous design/build projects, a home in Oregon, basements, entertainment centers, bars, and cabinets. The Weldons spent years as “Dance Prop Commanders,” designing and building props for a National Champion Dance studio in TN. Laura said she thinks it is in their blood. “We could spend all day watching HGTV,” says Bill, “and we have!” When they saw Closet Factory’s beautiful showroom and Middletown factory, the Weldons said, “Sold!” According to Bill, “It is very hard work, but It’s been a blast! We see so much growth and potential in this business.” The only direction Closet Factory received for the Southern Living Idea House Main Closet project was a combined “male/female closet” with “muted color schemes.” Former Closet Factory owner Jerry Ostertag designed the closet system to ensure it was “functional and looked great in the space.” The project was 95% complete when the Weldons took over, completing trim work, accessories, glass shelving, and drawers. They hit one small obstacle with a waiting period on the undermount soft-close drawers. For the fi rst week that the Idea House
Dream Home 26 louisville homes & gardens | october 2021
was open to the public, the Main Closet had different drawers. Jerry’s wife and former Closet Factory co-owner Marilyn Jones worked closely with Laura Weldon on the Main Closet decor and staging. Laura chose hat stands, jewelry, and other accessories, such as a selection of handbags appealing to the affluent “Southern woman.” One charming personal touch is a framed photograph of a little boy holding a baby. It ties in with the children’s study/playroom and other family-friendly spaces in the home. The little boy in the photograph is now 6’9” and 27 years old. The baby is now 6’3” and 23 years old. They are the Weldons’ sons! They say they will bring their daughter into the Christmas theme just to keep it fair. Although Bill and Laura have only received “informal feedback” so far, the public’s reaction to the Main Closet has been tremendous. “We built the closet system to complement the house, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our entire team took a day to go and see it,” says Laura. The Home Manager told them that, as they tour the closet, people love playing with the updated drawers, double-layer jewelry trays, and pulldowns for convenient storage of out-ofseason clothes. Laura says clients are moving away from large, heavy bedroom dressers and bureaus in favor of sitting areas and custom closets. In another space-saving move, homeowners add queen-size Murphy beds to offices or craft spaces, freeing up former guest rooms for other purposes. “Due to COVID, people have spent more time at home organizing and completing home improvement projects. We still see an increase in business.” ■
