Feel that first wave of holiday magic while walking amongst a sea of sparkling trees and lights. Start a new family tradition or continue a long-standing one with the 32nd annual event, Festival of Trees & Lights benefiting Norton Children’s Hospital. Presented by Republic Bank, this festive holiday celebration will take place Nov. 12 to 14 at Louisville Slugger Field. This year, all funds raised will benefit Norton Children’s Cancer Institute, affi liated with the UofL School of Medicine. Get your home or business holiday-ready with gorgeous new decor and shop for beautifully-decorated Christmas trees ranging from tabletop to 9 feet tall, as well as wreaths, greenery, swags, mailbox décor and more. The unique items are all created by talented local designers. Some trees also come with gift packages, perfect for checking off that holiday shopping list.
Purchase tickets in advance Tickets start at $6 for children 12 and under/ seniors 65+ and $11 for adults, children 2 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased online at FestivalOfTreesAndLights.org. To minimize crowds, an arrival window must be selected with ticket purchase. Quantities are limited, and times will sell out.
The event will also feature live entertainment, the Very Merry Market gift shop, a sweet shop with take-home treats, children’s train rides amongst the trees and a walk through Jewish Heritage display with a dreidel game to take home. Plus, families will get to experience Louisville’s fi rst visit from Santa Claus – a favorite local tradition. Free photos with Santa and take-home children’s crafts are included with every child admission ticket. In its 32-year history, hundreds of volunteers and members of the community have helped the Festival of Trees & Lights and Snow Ball gala raise more than $10 million to support Norton Children’s Hospital. As cases of childhood cancer continue to rise, so too do the health care needs of our communities. To meet this growing demand, Norton Children’s has a vision to build upon our proud tradition of delivering outstanding health care outcomes and to establish new areas of excellence in providing pediatric cancer care through innovative research, facility enhancements and workforce elevation. “Festival of Trees & Lights is a Louisville tradition, and we always look forward to celebrating the start of the holiday season with our community,” said Lynnie Meyer, Ed.D., R.N., CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Healthcare. “We are grateful to the sponsors, volunteers, community groups and families who make this event possible each year and help us further our mission. We would love to see a world without childhood cancer, which takes the support of the entire community.” ■ TOPS LOUISVILLE | november 2021 11

Mack-ing an impact
top notes
Not many people get the opportunity to make an impact on the community where they grew up. For Chris and Christi Mack, that’s become a reality. Chris grew up in Cincinnati while Christi grew up in Louisville. The two started the Mack Family Foundation in Cincinnati, when Chris was the head coach for the Xavier men’s basketball program. They’ve continued growing the organization in Louisville, where Chris has coached since 2018. “Chris and I both grew up in households where we gave back to, whether it was our school, our community, our church … so I really felt like the foundation had been set with both of us as we were growing up, as far as giving back to the community that we lived in,” Christi said about the origins of the foundation. “So we knew when our girls had gotten to the age of seven and eight that they were very capable of understanding the privileges that they had, that our family had, and the responsibilities that they had to give back to the community that we lived in.” The foundation aims to enrich the local youth through programs focused on education, food security and literacy. Perhaps their biggest program is Coach Mack’s Corner, which allows the foundation to partner with local schools to transform one corner of their library with colorful furniture, murals, and new books. The organization has started a total of 11 Coach Mack’s Corners – five in Cincinnati and six so far in Louisville. “I think it’s important for our kids to see that we live a very blessed life,” Christi said. “With all the wonderful things that come with Chris’s job, it is a responsibility we have to serve and give back to our community.” ■
The best way to connect with the foundation is digitally. The foundation’s website (www. mackfamily foundation.org) has up-to-date information and allows you to donate, sign up to view volunteer opportunities, and more. You can also connect with them on social (@mackfamilyfdn on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). TOPS LOUISVILLE | november 2021 13

Recently, we asked a few of our favorite holiday decorators what trends we can expect this winter and the answers were surprisingly the same. Since everyone is feeling the lingering shipping and inventory delays for gifts and decor; what and how much Christmas stock will actually make it to the shelves remains to be seen. With holiday suppliers operating between 30-40% of capacity this season, the real takeaway is if you see it, you better buy it! i'll b h e f Cstas The holiday season is about warmth and welcoming friends and family. Greet your guests with a cozy and gorgeously decorated front porch this year!
When planning your front porch decor, think symmetry as you walk up. Find a beautiful boxed tree to place on each side of your door. Don’t be afraid to add some additional sprays to make it look full and to add some texture! Then compliment those arrangements with a simple wreath on the door. Add a pretty holiday ribbon and you’ve got yourself a perfect holiday front porch. Additionally, if your porch is covered, add some soft seating and decor to really warm up the space. Incorporate some holiday throw pillows and a flannel blanket and you might just find yourself socializing outside rather than inside.

e could all use a little more positivity and encouragement in our world today. Our bodies do so much for us each and every day. We need to stay on a healthy path to keep our mind and body healthy for life. Sometimes, we just need to slow down and be thankful for what our bodies can do. Starting your day off right is important for a healthy mind and body. Have you ever journaled a day of eating? Well, I challenge you to do so. Today is your day! Many of us just assume we are getting the right foods or getting enough calories; however, little do we realize when we look back at our food journal, we question our intake. Most of us start our day with a cup of coffee or some form of caffeine to get us going. According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s safe for most adults to consume 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, 4 cups of coffee. Caffeine does so much more than keep you awake.

Health+Beauty It is a central nervous system stimulant that affects your body by increasing the circulation of chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline in the body. In small doses, it can make you feel refreshed and focused. If you tend to overload your body with caffeine (coffee, softdrinks), it can increase heart rate, cause nervousness, stomach irritation and headaches. Be aware of how much caffeine is entering your system. Too much will lead you in a downward spiral. Make sure you are consuming foods that help you maintain a healthy blood sugar level, especially if you are diagnosed with diabetes. Whole grains like bran, nuts like almonds, and non starchy vegetables such as broccoli. Protein helps the body repair itself. Fish and lean meats are an example of protein, which helps manage blood sugar. Always feel free to bring your food journal to a personal trainer or nutritionist at Baptist Health Milestone Wellness Center to help evaluate your food plan and help guide you on the right path.

Today, hit the pause button and be kind to someone. Maybe it entails reaching out to an old friend or saying hello to someone. Dopamine increases our feelings of happiness. Smiling activates tiny molecules that are designed to fend off stress. Be good to your body by making someone else’s day. Doing something good for someone will, in return, do your body some good by helping improve heart health, lower blood pressure and boost your immune system...all with a smile. Keep a smile on your face most of the day and choose to be kind to yourself and others at the same time. ■

This fall and winter, Louisvillians and visitors alike have the unique opportunity to experience The Brown Hotel’s upscale casual dining venue, Lobby Bar & Grill. The “spectacularly beautiful and surprisingly unstuffy” Lobby Bar is now serving Chef Dustin Willett’s English Grill menu, blending contemporary American cuisine with Kentucky culinary tradition. According to Lobby Bar Manager J. Troy Ritchie, Lobby Bar & Grill will be open Monday through Saturday from 5 pm - 10 pm (with live piano music each evening) until the English Grill reopens in the spring of 2022. The Brown Hotel’s J, Graham’s Cafe is open for brunch on Sundays at 10 am.

The “contemporary classic meets Old World opulence” of the expansive Lobby Bar area provides fairly generous table spacing and an open, airy dining experience more suited to the current times. The Brown Hotel website also describes it as a “glamorous, gilded space” that “balances its history with modern touches and sophisticated tastes.” Add in legendary local cuisine and the exceptional service that earned the English Grill the coveted A A A Four Diamond Award for 20+ straight years, and guests can relax in a comfortable yet lavish atmosphere steeped in Louisville lore and history. The Brown Hotel opened in October 1923 and was swinging throughout the Roaring Twenties. Following nightly dinner dances that stretched into the morning, guests would wander down to the hotel restaurant for early breakfasts and hangover cures. Chef Fred Schmidt whipped up The Hot Brown in 1926, and the rest is history. Approaching its centennial celebration in less than two years, The Brown Hotel remains a downtown Louisville landmark of GeorgianRevival architectural elegance and timeless Southern hospitality with updated guestrooms and modern amenities. Following a four-month-long $220,000 renovation in 2019, the Lobby Bar project expanded the bar itself and created seating for up to 30 additional guests in the bar and lounge area. The bar extension features cherry wood cabinetry and paneling, and granite countertops. The Lobby Bar, English Grill, and The Brown Hotel consistently land on best-of lists published in their respective categories. This past July, Forbes contributor Katie Chang named Lobby Bar & Grill at The Brown Hotel one of “7 Reasons Why You Should Visit Louisville This Summer,” highlighting The Hot Brown open-faced sandwich and the hotel’s extensive bourbon collection. If you’ve never had the original Hot Brown, settle in for roasted turkey breast, toast points, Mornay sauce, and Pecorino Romano cheese, baked to a golden brown and topped with bacon and tomatoes. “A Louisville Tradition with worldwide appeal,” The Hot Brown has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Southern Living Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, NBC’s Today Show, ABC News with Diane Sawyer, and Travel Channel’s Man v. Food and is “a regular entry in many of the fi nest cookbooks.” Also on the Lobby Bar & Grill Dinner Menu, Smokey Mac and Cheese with cavatappi pasta, white cheddar mornay, Nueskie bacon, fresh herbs, and smoked blue cheese followed by Louisville’s original walnut and chocolate chip Derby Pie pair perfectly with their handselected bourbon fl ight. Meat and potato lovers may have a tough time choosing between The Lobby Bar Burger and Davis Creek Farms Bison Strip Loin. On the lighter side, Troy recommends the Farmers Salad with Groganica Farms heirloom lettuce, port wine poached pear, dried cherries, candied pecans, Pecorino cheese, and red wine vinaigrette. Pan-seared Sea Scallops are served with sweet potato puree, Nueskie bacon, zucchini, mushrooms, peppadew, and balsamico. ■

I am personally there to lend a hand and provide encouragement whether it is working as a guardian flying a W WII veteran to Washington, D.C., or walking into the opening ceremony with the team at the National Wheelchair Veterans Games." Karl is also a top sponsor of USA Cares and is active with the local Veterans Club and Amvets post. Professionally, Karl is also an aggressive advocate for his clients while maintaining professional courtesy. "It's important to do what is right rather than what is easy," he says. "My competitive spirit motivates me to continue to sharpen my skills. The most satisfying thing is to see the result of a case that has had a direct and meaningful impact on someone's life. A trend that concerns me is law fi rms whose objective is just to get as big as possible across the country, creating legal services that are somewhat of a 'department store' commodity. Some of these fi rms are advocating for non-lawyer ownership of law fi rms by hedge funds. I believe your lawyer should be someone you know in your local community."

Gift of Adoption Fund TOPS CARES

F
ounded in 2020, the Kentucky Chapter of Gift of Adoption Fund has awarded $251,000 in adoption assistance grants across the Commonwealth to complete the adoptions of over 80 children. Gift of Adoption (GOA) was founded in 1996 by adoptive parents Lucy & Gene Wyka of Grafton, Wisconsin. In the course of adopting, they met other families struggling financially to fund adoptions. Families were resorting to second mortgages, private loans, and even bake sales. When applications for adoption assistance grants outpaced the private family foundation’s resources, the Wykas convertSPONSORED BY ed the foundation to a public charity in 2001. “Since inception, GOA has awarded nearly $12 million to complete the adoptions of 4,000 children.” GOA’s mission is to raise funds “to provide grants to complete the adoptions of vulnerable children – giving them a permanent family and the chance to thrive.” According to GOA Chief Development Officer Julie Pendell, “The need made GOA grow astronomically. Upfront costs of adoption are daunting. Grants can make all the difference for adoptive families.” Julie has worked in nonprofit development for over 20 years, including Make-A-Wish® Illinois and Michigan chapters. She has been on staff with GOA for almost one year. “There are 26 GOA chapters across the United States. Each chapter is Laura, Bret, and baby Hayes
volunteer-driven with volunteer chapter boards driving revenue and awareness,” says Julie. “Each year, Gift of Adoption Kentucky receives requests from approximately 18-20 qualified families — representing a funding need of $73,000 to $75,000. The goal of the Kentucky Chapter’s all-volunteer board is to raise enough funds to help complete each of these adoptions. 100% of the money raised by the chapter is directed to uniting children with forever families in the area.” Laura and Bret of Glasgow, Kentucky, adopted baby Hayes with GOA Kentucky’s help. “Before we were placed with Hayes, he was in the NICU. He was waiting for us to avoid going into foster care. This grant gave us the ability to provide Hayes with the care he needs. We encountered additional legal fees, a more drawn-out process than anticipated, and extra medical costs.” Elizabeth and Bernadin of Campbell, Kentucky, added Micha and Jonah from Haiti to create a family of six. “If they had not been adopted, both of the boys could have lost their lives to the infections they had being left untreated. We are so thankful that they came home and could receive treatment before their infections got too serious.” GOA Kentucky is not an adoption agency. Adoption agencies sometimes refer clients to GOA for financial assistance. November is National Adoption Awareness Month, “a month set aside to raise awareness about the urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth in foster care.” November 20, 2021, is National Adoption Day, “a collective effort to raise awareness of the more than 120,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States.” ■
How to help GOA Kentucky! GivingTuesday is November 30, 2021, and encourages fundraising, volunteerism, and charitable donations to nonprofit organizations. GOA Kentucky relies on such occasions and all year-end gifts for a bulk of its funding. In addition to monetary contributions, GOA Kentucky is currently seeking Kentucky Chapter board members. s we move into a season of abundance, harvest, and thanksgiving, food waste accounts for up to 29% of trash each year in the United States. Kentucky Harvest is the only food rescue organization to help end food insecurity in the local Kentuckiana area, delivering over 2 million pounds of donated, usable food annually to 89 recipient organizations in Louisville and Southern Indiana. Their mission is “to end local hunger by connecting with food donors and engaging volunteers to rescue excess food and move it from those who have it to those in need.”

“The vision for Kentucky Harvest is to continue to develop local partnerships connecting food companies with food charities while leveraging our network of volunteers to focus on reducing food waste and getting usable food to the hungry in our community.” Kentucky Harvest’s first Visit kyharvest.org for more information. Follow Kentucky Harvest on LinkedIn, Executive Director, Heather Stewart, is the newest addition to the team. As Executive @kyharvest on Facebook, and @kentuckyharvest on Instagram. Director, Heather works “to connect with our community and raise funds and awarealways comes through for us all throughout the year, but we are esness so Kentucky Harvest can keep moving to eliminate hunger.” Heather began working for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Soci- pecially grateful during the holiday season. This support makes the ety® in 1996 and became a national manager in Cincinnati. In biggest difference and lets us provide our children living on campus Louisville, she worked with The Healing Place, Make-A-Wish®, with the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner. We receive turkeys and and through Ignite Louisville — a program of the Louisville Lead- other food during this time that makes this special dinner possiership Center — realized her passion for assisting small grassroots ble! We also appreciate that Kentucky Harvest is willing to help out nonprofits. As a partner in Affordable Nonprofit Help, Heather whenever needed. We know if there is a need, we can call them, and began grant-writing for Kentucky Harvest in October 2018 before they will do whatever they can to help us provide for our children!” joining the organization part-time in September 2020. “During the holidays, our food drives help children and their families experience these special occasions,” says Heather. Kentucky Harvest’s food drive season begins each year in the fall when the organization collects shelf-stable foods (such as canned corn, canned sweet potatoes, and instant mashed potatoes) to deliver with turkeys “for families and children who might not otherwise get to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving meal.” In 2020, with the support of their annual Turkey Stock event and local businesses, they delivered over 2,300 turkeys and sides to 20+ local organizations. During the third week of November, turkeys and monetary donations are encouraged for this year’s Turkey Stock at Brownie’s The Shed Grille & Bar. Some recipient organizations that have benefited from Kentucky Harvest food drive season are Bellewood & Brooklawn and Feed the City. According to Bellewood & Brooklawn, “Kentucky Harvest
Feed the City supplies food boxes with turkey and “all the fi xings” to many less fortunate families every year. “Kentucky Harvest made a huge difference to our program by donating many turkeys towards our 19th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Food Box Giveaway. This event would not have been a great success without the support of Kentucky Harvest! We thank you for all you do throughout our community to fight hunger!” As for the future of Kentucky Harvest, “We are in growth mode,” says Heather. “We need new people to serve on the board as we develop a new strategic plan to add more food donors and more recipient organizations from a six-county area. We are also working to grow our current events.” The COVID pandemic hit Kentucky Harvest hard with the partial shutdown of the court system, losing 300 community service volunteers per month. The organization seeks volunteers to help with local area food deliveries. To donate your time or pallets of food, call Kentucky Harvest at (502)894-9999. “We always need donations, especially during the holidays.” ■ TOPS LOUISVILLE | november 2021 55

f you’re getting in the mood for the holidays and the spirit of giving is coming upon you … look no further than the time honored tradition of the Marine Corps Toys for Tots for your annual giving! Since 1947, The Marine Corps and Toys for Tots have been making a difference in the lives of American families. What started out as a way to distribute a few handcrafted dolls by Major Bill Hendricks and his wife has now grown into a global mission. Today, nearly 75 years later Toys for Tots distributes an average of 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children annually. With programs spanning from literacy to toys, corporation and celebrities of all kinds have assisted in bringing awareness about the much needed program. Even Walt Disney himself assisted in the early years by designing the very first Toys for Tots poster and the train logo that is still used today. Here in the Jefferson County area, our own Toys For Tots program carries on this legacy of giving by providing toys to over 17,000 children annually. Cletis Evans, a retired Marine Corps Captain, is the area Volunteer Toys for Tots Coordinator for the local chapter serving Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Henry, and Owen Counties. “It’s not as simple as one might think. It takes Marines, Sailors, and Auxiliary members of our Marine Corps League unit. There are also regular volunteers and the general public to help make all of it come together. Because when you talk about serving almost seventeen thousand kids on an annual basis, which is not a number to brag about… you need a lot of toys,” Mr. Evans states. Mr. Evans is not shy when asking for support and he’s very clear about what they need from year to year. When pressed for what toys he was most in need of, his response was quick. “I don’t need any 3 to 6 year old toys this year. We desperately need gifts for two groups, those 9 year olds to 12 year olds and then those age 13 to 16.” And while those age groups may seem daunting, Mr. Evans suggests creating teams or chipping in with others to purchase gifts for these age groups
“Every child deserves a little Christmas is the motto for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation. I like to change that here in Louisville, Kentucky to every child deserves a ‘great’ Christmas!” as their “toys” are usually a bit pricier than a doll or truck. He encourages church groups, boy scouts, girl scouts or even partnering with your neighbors as a way to fulfill this unique need. From motorcycle rallies to even a Miss Toys for Tots Pageant run by Hannah Robb, the recently crowned Miss My Old Kentucky Home, every activity counts because every toy counts. ■
