“WITH NEW KNEES, I HAVE A NEW LEASE ON LIFE. I’M NOT LIMITED ANYMORE.” — Jon Thuerbach, Orthopedics Care Success Story
Jon Thuerbach has accepted that growing older is inevitable. But he doesn’t want his age to limit him from living life. After osteoarthritis pain caused him to give up sports, his family urged him to see a doctor. “It finally took its toll,” he said. “I was making groaning sounds every time I sat down.” Since having knee replacement surgery at Baptist Health Louisville, Thuerbach feels limitless. “It’s hard for me now to imagine that much pain 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Subconsciously, I would limit myself when I was in that pain.” he said. Instead, he’s back on the golf course and ready to travel the world with his wife, Kathy. The final home of George Rogers Clark, Locust Grove is a place where history comes alive, especially during the annual Independence Day Celebration. This year’s festivities will take place on Saturday, July 2nd—the anniversary of the official vote by the Continental Congress to enact the Declaration of Independence. “Visitors will enjoy tours inside the historic house and farm buildings, performances by costumed actors giving first-person interpreter portrayals, a reading of the Declaration of Independence as well as a reading of “What to the Slave is the 4th of July” by Frederick Douglass, and a whole lot more... and it’s all free, thanks to the folks at Independence Bank,” says Carol Ely, Executive Director of Locust Grove. “We’re honored and pleased that Locust Grove has allowed Independence Bank to sponsor this fun, family, and educational event for the last several years. This experience provides context and appreciation to what it took to settle America in the early days of our nation,” says Louis R. Straub II, Independence Bank Louisville Market President. “The celebration will be a beautiful representation of our shared history,” says Carol Ely.

Eighteen years ago, Carol came to Locust Grove with an expert background in the history of the American Revolution. Under her stewardship, the legacy of Locust Grove has grown and evolved. “It’s been a very gratifying experience,” she says. “This is not a dusty place, but a living and vibrant engagement with history, where you can see into the experience of those that formed America. A cross-section of the community comes to enjoy this site and its beautiful environment. It’s an important place not just because of our country’s founders, but because of all the people who lived and worked here who contributed to the creation of America.” Food trucks will be on-site, or anyone attending can bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grounds. The event is from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please visit LocustGrove.org.

How Bad Does a Knee Have to Be Before Considering Replacement? For the majority of patients with knee pain that interferes with their ability to go on walks and enjoy other recreational activities, most doctors will try more conservative treatments before recommending surgery.
» Your long-lasting pain isn’t improving » Your arthritis is interfering with your life. If simple, necessary activities such as walking, sleeping, and working are becoming difficult due to knee pain. » Your knee hurts when you’re at rest. You want to remain active. » You want lasting relief. The average knee replacement lasts for 20-25 years and a little less for those who are more physically active.

Benefits of Knee Replacement Surgery
“I
treat my patients like I would want to be treated and explain all the options to them,” said Thomas Schlierf, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon with Baptist Health Medical Group in Louisville and New Albany, Indiana. “We try conservative therapies first, but if those aren’t working then we talk about total joint replacement.” “Our goal is to get you back to your daily activities and doing the things you enjoy doing,” explains Dr. Schlierf.
When You Should Consider Knee Replacement
» Pain relief. Probably the biggest benefit you’ll notice after surgery is not experiencing pain during your daily activities and when you’re at rest.
Dr. Schlierf can be contacted at (502) 897-6579
» High success and satisfaction rates. More than 90% of those who undergo knee replacement surgery, most of whom have osteoarthritis, say that it improves their pain and that they’re satisfied with the results one year after the procedure. SPONSORED CONTENT

Denim and Diamonds: A Gala Celebration Benefitting Parkinson’s Disease
BY JULIE KRUER
Jason Smith always assumed the tremor in his right hand was caused by drinking a lot of coffee. Turns out, it actually was one of the first symptoms of young-onset Parkinson’s disease. Jason was diagnosed with the progressive nervous system disorder eight years ago at age 40. Parkinson’s causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, as well as stiffness and difficulty with balance and coordination. Jason said he felt shocked. “People think it’s an older generation issue,” he said. “I’m sitting there going, ‘I’m 40. This can’t be true.’” After his diagnosis, Jason was connected with Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana, a Part of Norton Neuroscience Institute Resource Centers. Resources and services provided for patients like Jason are funded by community support through the Norton Healthcare Foundation. Jason is the director of operations at Against the Grain Brewery in Louisville. When he learned about the center’s annual fundraising event, the Denim & Diamonds Gala Celebration, he knew he had to get involved. Since then, he has been using his 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry and vast network of chef friends to help produce the event and continue to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease and funding for the center. This year’s event — the 15th annual — takes place on Friday, July 29, at Mellwood Art Center in Louisville. It will feature signature appetizers and a main course from some of Louisville’s finest chefs. There 16 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022
will be live music by Juice Box Heroes, dancing, tasting tables, a specialty cocktail, a photo booth, and live and silent auctions. Through donations and volunteerism, the Norton Healthcare Foundation provides funding for support groups, exercise programs, equipment, new technologies, clinical research and health education for patients, families, medical staff and the community. “It takes the support of everyone in the community for us to be able to be here for patients like Jason when they need us,” said Lynnie Meyer, R.N., Ed.D., CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Healthcare. “We are looking forward to a great evening of celebration, and are so grateful for all that Jason has done and is doing to support the work of the center.” For Jason, the fellowship that happens at the event is just as important as the fundraising.
“You almost forget about the disease for a day, have some fellowship and support those around you because everyone has to lean on one another,” he said. “We just need to celebrate and raise awareness and raise funds.”
“People think it’s an older generation issue,” he said. “I’m sitting there going, ‘I’m 40. This can’t be true.’ ”
WHAT: Denim & Diamonds Gala Celebration WHEN: Friday, July 29, 6 to 11 p.m. WHERE: Mellwood Art Center, 1860 Mellwood Ave., Louisville, Kentucky WHY: The event benefits Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana, a Part of Norton Neuroscience Institute Resource Centers, through the Norton Healthcare Foundation HOW: Visit Denim-Diamonds.com to purchase your tickets or make a donation today, and to bid on silent auction items virtually on July 29

HOPE for Leaders: Hope Zoeller, Ed.D
BY DAWN ANDERSON | COURTESY PHOTOS
T
he past two years have challenged business leaders in ways they could not have imagined. Some missteps were inevitable, with so many decisions to be made with immediacy or on uncertain timelines. But hope is found with persistence, flexibility, and learning the lessons to emerge as a more decisive, compassionate leader. With the second volume of their HOPE for Leaders series, Dr. Hope Zoeller and Dr. Joe DeSensi have co-authored the guidebook for navigating challenging times and circumstances: HOPE for Leaders in the 2020s: New Issues to Face, New Problems to Solve, New Hope for the Future. Dr. Hope Zoeller shares her own experience as a business leader, educator, leadership consultant, and published author. As a child, Zoeller wanted to grow up to be a teacher. She eventually received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Psychology from Bellarmine University and a Master of Education in Training and Development from the University of Louisville. Zoeller worked part-time for UPS in international customer service and then full-time for 14 years in Human Resources and Training & Development. She was mentored by a manager with a 40-year career at UPS and working on her Doctorate in Leadership Education from Spalding University, where Dr. Zoeller is now a professor instructing in the Master of Business Communication program. Dr. Zoeller left UPS to work for a consulting firm before hanging out her own shingle “to be a motivator of other leaders.” When asked who inspires her, she mentions several impactful business leaders, both personal and more widely known. Zoeller’s first inspiration was her father, a third-generation business owner who had worked for his father and father-in-law. He is still running the business at the age of 77. “My father is a true servant leader,” says Zoeller. “His expectations are high, but he is always fair.” His advice to her has always been, “Be a good person to your people.” The start of Oprah Winfrey’s media mogul and philanthropy journey also strikes a chord with Dr. Zoeller. As a broadcast journalist in Baltimore, Winfrey was effectively demoted, being told she was “too emotional and connected too much,” as Dr. Zoeller explains. Winfrey would double down on her communication style and land in Chicago, where she rebuilt her career, inked a syndication deal with King World, and began her broadcasting empire with The Oprah Winfrey Show. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is the bestselling co-author of Lean-In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. The fourth chapter of Lean In is titled It’s a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder, a metaphor attributed to former Fortune magazine editor Pattie Sellers that has stuck with
32 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022
Dr. Zoeller ever since she read it. Sandberg challenges the “corporate ladder” concept, agreeing that, in her experience, the climb to success is more like a jungle gym with myriad ways to reach the top. “Build your skills, not your resumé.” As Founder and President of HOPE (Helping Other People Excel), LLC, Dr. Zoeller facilitates leader success at every level of an organization and coaches business leaders on how to do the same. “I specialize in building C-suite to frontline connections. Leadership is like a skyscraper,” says Dr. Zoeller, to offer another metaphor. “The view is different at every level, but every view is reality. Pull any level out, and the building crashes.” She assists clients in defining what success looks like for them, welcoming diversity in the workplace, and bringing out the best employees have to give. With the Hope for Leaders series, Zoeller and DeSensi wrote Volume 1 in 2015 as a reference guide with the Table of Contents developed with the intent for readers to dip into leadership topics on an as-needed basis. If Volume 1 was the “what,” Volume 2 would be the “how,” according to Dr. Zoeller. But five years later, the COVID pandemic changed the plan. They knew they had to acknowledge all the business leadership challenges their readers and intended audience faced. Hope for Leaders in the 2020s offers fresh perspectives and ways to address contemporary business issues, “including leadership mindsets, project management, organizational culture, and workplace communications.” Volume 2 also reminds business leaders to care for themselves to serve others better, or “putting the oxygen on first,” as Dr. Zoeller describes it. The book then lays out ways of providing meaningful feedback and leading with love. “Each chapter could be a team meeting and exercise.” Compassion fatigue is real, but Dr. Zoeller recalls the starfish story, which originated in The Star Thrower by Loren Eisely. With starfish scattered on the beach after a storm, a young boy begins picking them up and throwing them back into the sea. But each time, another washes ashore. When told the attempts are futile, the reply is, “Well, it matters to this one.” Dr. Zoeller hopes this new book will help business leaders leave their mistakes in the past, or, to quote Maya Angelou, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” She urges leaders to examine what they got out of the last two years and how they can encourage others to do the same.
Hope for Leaders in the 2020s is available in paperback on Amazon. Visit hopeforleaders.com and follow @hopeforleaders on Facebook. Connect with Dr. Hope Zoeller via LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ hopezoeller/ or email at hope@hopeforleaders.com.

What is a
Leader
?
What makes someone a true leader is intangible. The qualities that set someone apart – and encourage others to follow where they lead – are hard to define. There is no set template for strong leadership. Yet everyone knows a leader when they encounter one. Understanding leadership is an entire branch of study and thought. Through the ages, countless writers, researchers and experts have attempted to quantify the personality traits and behaviors that make leaders tick. Books, blogs, podcasts and shows explore this topic in-depth, yet many still struggle to get a firm grasp on leadership. It feels elusive, complex and maybe even just a bit magical. We're pondering this question in honor of this month's Leaders of Lexington feature. We’ve collected some of the best resources to help you better hone your own leadership skills and understand what it means to truly lead. by Amanda Harper

Show Up by Rita Ernst
BY DAWN ANDERSON | COURTESY PHOTOS
Show Up Positive by Louisville CEO Coach and business organizational expert Rita Ernst is a new how-to book about positivity in the workplace to be released June 14. Ernst is the Owner of Ignite Your Extraordinary, an independent consulting and coaching practice dedicated to helping businesses with “distressed and toxic teams” and those who have “become victims of their skyrocketing success.” An expert in organizational psychology, internal organizational development, and human resources, she helps businesses restore motivation, teamwork, culture, and leadership. Rita Ernst began her internal organizational development and human resources consulting career in Fortune 200 companies. She left the corporate world to establish her independent practice in 2005. Ernst is an executive coach who facilitates strategic planning and the design and implementation of learning workshops, employee engagement, and change and performance management. The book Show Up Positive reveals how to “intentionally cultivate positive thoughts and behaviors in the workplace.” According to Ernst, “Henry Ford said it best: ‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.’ The good news is you get to say, ‘Enough!’ You get to take action and improve your situation. I created this book to share my observations and breakthroughs from working with people who have been challenged in their businesses by all the factors affecting us over the last two years - the pandemic, social justice, supply chain issues, and inflation, just to name a few.” Ernst hopes to prevent executives and their teams from reacting automatically and getting mired down in negativity and lack of productivity. “Choosing daily actions to Show Up Positive is placing a bet on yourself and your ability to shape the world around you. Positive cultures only exist when people freely and consistently choose those norms and behaviors; there are no shortcuts.” Show Up Positive will be released Tuesday, June 14, 2022, on Amazon and is now available for preorder. JEFF RUBY’S STEAKHOUSE
LEADERS IN FINE DINING EXPERIENCE In 1981, soon after opening his first restaurant, ‘The Precinct’, Jeff Ruby realized that guests didn’t patronize the place simply because they were hungry. Ruby explains, “They could’ve just gone to their refrigerators if they were hungry. They were coming to my place to celebrate life and I was going to give them a total culinary and entertainment experience unlike any other so they could do just that. Almost four decades later, we strive to do the exact same thing every night.” Opening in 2006, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse quickly made its mark on Louisville’s culinary landscape and has become THE place to see and be seen in Derby City. Loyal Louisvillians alongside celebrities, athletes, entertainers and more relish The Jeff Ruby Experience which Ruby describes as “a unique combination of elements like ambiance, culinary expertise, decor, music, hospitality, rhythm and flow, sense of arrival, service and so much more.” This experience has drawn national attention. According to their website, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse has garnered awards such as OpenTable’s Top 100 Steakhouses in America; Travel + Leisure’s Top American Steakhouses; and USA Today’s Best American Steakhouses, among many others. Ruby credits the origin of his success to his high school football coach and mentor, Jeep Bednarik, who took an interest in him after Ruby fled from a troubled home and became selfsufficient at the age of 15. Ruby says, “He taught me the value of striving to become a better person, hard work and more. I wanted to make him proud. As a result of his mentorship, I went from failing grades to straight A’s. From not winning a wrestling match my sophmore year to not losing one my senior year. From riding the bench to All-State football honors and a scholarship to Cornell University. He is one of the single greatest influences I’ve had in my life.” Now, Ruby has moved into the mentor role and is passing his positive influence down through his employees to his guests. According to Ruby, “In the restaurant business, everything is important, but perhaps nothing more so than making our guets feel really important. The only way to make that happen is to make our employees our most important thing. If we offer them extraordinary opportunities, they make an emotional connection with the guests they serve. I would’ve never been successful if my employees didn’t want me to be.” Ruby also gives back through The Jeff Ruby Foundation, which aims to alleviate childhood poverty by first addressing challenges faced by the most vulnerable population in our community - those without parents as well as those in the current foster care system. 325 West Main Street, Louisville // 502-584-0102 // jeffruby.com

SCOTT SHOENBERGER President and CEO of AJS Hotels (The Galt House)
LEADER IN EXPERIENTIAL RESTAURANTS AND BARS
In the early 1800s, the original Galt House was a residence located on Louisville’s waterfront, later transformed into a 60-room hotel in 1835. Over half a century later, in 1972, the Galt House Hotel gained 25 stories and continued to expand with the creation of the East Tower in 1984. To this day, the Galt House Hotel remains the only waterfront hotel in Louisville. When you stay at the Galt House Hotel, you’re in the heart of downtown and just steps away from fun, local attractions such as the KFC Yum! Center, Fourth Street Live!, the Muhammad Ali Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and others; some of which are even connected to the Galt House Hotel by pedway. If you’d rather stay in, the Galt House Hotel is the place to do so with its full-service salon and spa, unique barber shop, pool and rooftop fitness center, to name a few. Scott Shoenberger, President and CEO of AJS Hotels, loves working with the people of Louisville, his staff, and making an impact in his community. “Louisville is welcoming and friendly, and the people are warm and genuine.” Though he’s been all over the world, Scott says the approachability of the people in Louisville makes a world of difference. If you haven’t been to the Galt House Hotel in a while, you might see some changes the next time you are there. “The Galt house is all-new and completely transformed to celebrate the city. We took it back to its roots with some of the city’s historic restaurants, recreating those experiences for locals and visitors alike - an abundance of experiences in one location with seven restaurants and bars.” says Scott. With the Al J. Schneider Company celebrating its 75th anniversary as a family-owned company this year, it’s sure to be a big year for the Galt House Hotel. Co-Owners, NTC Traffic Control
Leaders in Second Chance Employment As Co-Owners of NTC Traffic Control, Robin K. Hall and Michelle James are passionate about second-chance employment. Founded in 2007, NTC is a woman-owned, federal, state, and locally certified company with a mission “to provide quality services and uplift communities.” In providing Traffic Control, Workforce Consulting, and Safety Equipment, NTC helps justice-involved individuals reestablish their work history, provide for their families, and become valued members of society. Robin has felt like a leader since she was a little kid. “I was always the bossy one.” She worked for the family produce and restaurant business as a teen. Her instinct is to take charge, tackle deadlines, and get things accomplished. Michelle says she, too, has always been a go-getter. “I enjoy figuring out how to make something work and making and nurturing relationships,” which is especially true of their Workforce Consulting services. That aspect of the business happened organically. “The phone rings all week long with other companies seeking second-chance employment advice.” Both women believe in transformational leadership. “I am more laid-back in giving direction to employees, raising them to the level of making decisions, and then providing support,” says Robin. Michelle’s style is egalitarian as well. “I never ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself.” NTC’s leadership is set apart in the industry by virtue of their accessibility. Robin prides herself on being accessible to clients, customers, and employees. “If we’re not aware of what is happening, let us know, and we’ll fix it ASAP. We’re very hands-on.” Michelle answers any call she receives. Not only do they respond, but they also take action immediately. “If something’s wrong, give us 30 minutes to fix it.” Robin looks forward to further growth and expansion, but the focus is also on giving back. “We really believe in our people. What’s important now is letting them move forward and become leaders themselves while providing growth, challenge, and stability.” Michelle says “wonderful opportunities” are coming their way, and she is excited for what the future holds. “For every one door opening, I look down five more.” NTC is already part of the fabric of the community, but they want to be even more involved. “We are only as successful as our people.” 4720 Pinewood Road | Louisville, KY 40218 (502)384-2125 info@ntctrafficcontrol.com ntctrafficcontrol.com

Assistant Vice President Campbellsville University in Louisville
LEADER IN HIGHER EDUCATION Campbellsville University in Louisville, Louisville’s premiere Christian university, offers programs yearround in 8-week terms rather than 16-week semesters. Campbellsville offers pre-bachelorette, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in over 40 different programs in face-to-face and hybrid formats. Campbellsville University in Louisville is a leader in higher education because they offer students the best quality and experiences at the highest possible value in two convenient Louisville locations. “In short, we are flexible, affordable, and local,” says Mark Mann, Assistant Vice President of the school. “Because of our flexibility and affordability, we are also one of the fastest growing universities in the Commonwealth.” The staff at CU Louisville is motivated by the success of their graduates and understands that in the most basic sense, one needs to know and engage with the community in order to be a good leader. Those are lessons that they impart to their students. “Campbellsville University’s mission is to create servant leaders in the image of Christ,” says Dr. Mann. “In line with becoming engaged and knowing the community, a true leader is one who gives back. Service to others throughout Kentuckiana and the communities we call home is what real Louisville Leadership is, so I would encourage anyone aspiring to lead to balance their leadership with service.” Moving along with the times has always been part of the CU mission. “My biggest piece of advice to anyone interested in entering higher education would be to prepare to embrace change,” Dr. Mann says. “Change is the one constant in this industry. The quote that our associates hear me say most is that change is always easy. When I say that, people often look at me very skeptically because life is hard, and the prevailing theory is that change is difficult. I disagree. It’s all about perception. Change isn’t always quick or linear or how we planned, but that doesn’t mean it’s not easy. If we can learn to become flexible in thought, to change our view of the problems we face, and take responsibility for making the change, then change is always easy.” The CU Louisville team is quick to embrace that spirit. The workforce development focus throughout the Commonwealth has hastened the process of change, just as education is moving back into more synchronous and hybrid formats. “Students are experiencing distance education that happens virtually, in real-time, and the industry will thrive because of it,” Dr. Mann says. “It will allow private Christian institutions such as Campbellsville to provide instruction to students across the globe. Because of our flexibility, CU Louisville has already begun to harness the power of technology to teach classes in places we never dreamed possible.” 2300 Greene Way | culouisville.com

KIMBERLY CASHION & PAMELA ALVEY Extended Care House Calls
LEADERS IN MOBILE MEDICAL CARE The age of Covid shifted the way we think of what the concept of “home” means to us. The place we are most at ease, where we can be our most authentic selves. That’s something that Kimberly Cashion and Pamela Alvey understand very well. As the medical field and what it means constantly change, these two APRNs have improved the old idea of the house call. This has placed them ahead of the curve by keeping you and your loved ones at the place we can be our absolute most comfortable: at home. These two founded Extended Care House Calls. They’re dedicated to bettering the lives and preserving the health of their patients through multidisciplinary, continuous care that keeps those they serve content in the place we all long to stay, secure and safe in that familiar corner of the world that we’ve built for ourselves. Experts tell us that the use of Telehealth, which has already increased dramatically since 2020, will become ubiquitous. As baby boomers age, concepts about at-home care will become more common, and technology and medical advances will allow it to become more accessible and more effortless. These are all concepts that Kimberly and Pamela have been pioneering for years. A pair of truly innovative adaptors, the two women started this business together in 2006 and today lead a mobile staff of experts who genuinely care and show endless devotion. The entire team takes tremendous pride in the health and happiness they provide to over 3000 patients. Beyond the services offered by conventional home care, Extended Care House Calls brings the hospital to home for even the most complex patients, especially those for whom a trip to the doctor or hospital would be an arduous journey. The two women have developed a code of service that they call “The Special Sauce,” one that can’t be duplicated without their personalized input. SEAN & TIA EDWARDS Founders of Fresh Bourbon Distilling Company LLC
LEADER IN SMALL BATCH BOURBON Recognized as the first African Americans to produce bourbon in the state of Kentucky since slavery, Sean and Tia Edwards approach things a little differently when making their four grain, unique mash bill. “Fresh Bourbon is meant to be enjoyed however you like it. Whether you’re a first-taster or a tastemaker, we believe bourbon is for everyone.” While traveling, the couple realized how many bourbon experts were telling them how to drink their spirits, all while the market was screaming for a new bourbon experience. Fortunately, Sean and Tia took this experience and developed Fresh Bourbon, a gently sweet and approachable bourbon with surprising complexity and satisfying depth. The couple believes that as more people continue to look for a premium bourbon experience, the Kentucky Bourbon industry will continue to grow. “We want to represent a level of excellence in the spirits industry.” says Sean and Tia. “At Fresh Bourbon, we make bourbon for the way you drink.” Rather than sourcing the recipe, Sean and Tia created the recipe for Fresh Bourbon firsthand. With aromas of honeysuckle, malted grains, fire-grilled sweet corn, and flavors of vanilla, oak smoke, and nuttiness you can enjoy this 95 proof bourbon as a cocktail, with a splash, rocks, or neat. As Sean and Tia say, “we want your bourbon experience to be exactly the way you like it.” To learn more about Fresh Bourbon and see where you can pick up a bottle, visit www.freshbourbon.com or connect with on Instagram @freshbourbon. www.freshbourbon.com @freshbourbon

KASEY MAIER PRESIDENT
WATERFRONT BOTANICAL GARDEN
LEADER IN NON-PROFITS As President of Waterfront Botanical Gardens, Kasey Maier leverages a wealth of leadership experience to cultivate this inspiring, transformative, and sustainable green space. Maier, a Louisville native, received a Psychology degree from Denison University in Granville, OH, and attended graduate school at Penn State. Her first non-profit startup was the Kentucky College of Art + Design (KyCAD). Maier believes in bold, courageous leadership that meets challenges head-on and moves forward fearlessly. Her independent streak began early in life. “In grade school, I was not often in cliques because I didn’t follow other people. That didn’t always make me very popular, especially with groups that had already established leaders.” This perspective helped guide a career defined by building passionate and effective organizations. “I am all about the team.” Maier has centered her role as President around her proven skill sets in fundraising and marketing and isn’t afraid to hire talented people whose experience and knowledge bolster the organization in other areas. Knowing your limitations as a leader is as important as knowing your strengths. “I know very clearly what I am and am not good at and surround myself with those who provide the perfect balance.” Passion for your mission can only take you so far in the competitive nonprofit landscape. An effective executive views professional development and education as a lifelong process. “It’s harder to learn the business side of nonprofits with no business background.” Maier is focused on continuing to build a strong leadership team capable of running the Gardens for years to come. “It gives me the freedom to create long-term visions and plan future projects for the organization.” The work continues this year with the groundbreaking of a world-class Japanese Garden. Nathan Straub, Administration and Logistics Director
LEADERS OF SECURITY SERVICES AND CONSULTING “For over a decade, we’ve been Kentucky’s premiere security agency working with private families, corporate executives, political figures, media networks, the bourbon industry, and more,” says Logan Flynn. The group specializes in executive protection and security consulting for businesses and high net-worth individuals. “Our clients are leaders, decision-makers, and high-earners. They understand that their productivity and organization’s efficiency drastically increase when they’re kept safe and on schedule.” These are multi-faceted experts at Decisive Action, with a unique blend of professional security, law enforcement, and military backgrounds. “The security landscape has definitely changed,” says Flynn. “That stereotyped ‘bodyguard’ who is unapproachable, unsophisticated, and out of place in social settings... yeah, that’s not us. We blend and adapt to every situation, whether in a boardroom, luxury function, or in the street. Our team is professionally personable and effective.” “At Decisive Action, our level of professionalism exceeds the industry standard because we hold ourselves above it. For us, there is no compromise,” says Nathan Straub. Decisive Action exceeds that standard by providing a level of service customized to each client’s needs and situation; from board rooms to secure travel logistics, from civil unrest to red-carpet events. That flexibility and personal nature are primary drivers for Decisive Action’s repeat customer base, especially within an industry where a trusted word of mouth referral is everything. “Once a client is introduced to and works with us, they rarely, if ever, go elsewhere when a need arises,” adds Straub. “Executive Protection is a niche service, but our clients are discerning enough to understand the valuable difference in knowing and having a relationship with a team as capable as ours.” “At the end of the day, it’s about relationships.” echoes Flynn, “We don’t outsource our client’s concerns in what is often their most stressful time. We have a vested interest in assisting with and solving their problems, personally and professionally.” decisiveaction-us.com | 859-983-3794 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022 75
JULIE MILLER MICHELE APONTE DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS BluMine Health
LEADER IN CONCIERGE HEALTHCARE SERVICES Julie Miller and Michele Aponte are on the vanguard of a new idea in healthcare. A concept that both saves companies of every kind on costs and guides everyday people to improve their wellbeing. BluMine Health is designed as direct-to-employer concierge healthcare. In actual practice, that means that the employees of BluMine clients see attentive, excellent nurse practitioners for their basic needs rather than being tossed into the conventional healthcare system, thus reducing costs and creating a relative sense of ease for patients. The BluMine program doesn’t replace health insurance but instead compliments it. “Everything we do is a claim that’s not going to insurance,” Julie says. “These nurse practitioners really spend time with patients, identify their needs, and build long-term trust. It’s one flat fee for the companies we work with and totally free to their employees.” BluMine began in 2014 and currently has twelve clinics, some of which are right on the premises of their larger clients, so employees can very easily be seen whenever it’s necessary. They made it through the most challenging days of the pandemic with flying colors and, as a point of great pride, never closed for even a day. The clinics can easily communicate with BluMine’s Medical Director whenever necessary. Patients receive the kind of one-on-one care that’s often elusive, especially for ongoing conditions. Potential clients begin the process with a free initial consultation. A company of any size or type can review the last year’s worth of health insurance claims and determine if BluMine can create a better return on investment. In most cases, they can create win/win solutions for all involved. “This is the kind of care that can follow you through your life and help keep you well through healthy outcome initiatives,” says Michele. “We believe in keeping promises.” 502-384-1917 x 5050 JNMiller@BluMineHealth.com bluminehealth.com 76 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022

Couple Celebrates Their Juneteenth Wedding at Churchill Downs

licia Williams, a cosmetologist, and Raynanza Williams Jr., an automotive worker, were close friends at Iroquois High School before their relationship blossomed years later. They were both born and raised in Kentucky, but it wasn’t until they were in secondary school that they had the time to get to know each other better and, then, much later, fell in love. After moving around and being apart after graduation, the couple reunited, had children, and settled down in Louisville before they were married on Juneteenth, June 19, 2021. Alicia and Raynanza chose Churchill Downs as their venue because “it’s a staple in our city and state. Even the nation,” says Alicia. “You may not know a lot about Louisville, but you have heard of the historical Churchill Downs, because of the Kentucky Derby. The idea of getting married in such a historical place on Juneteenth made us feel proud. It was magical.” Being creative, Alicia made all the centerpieces and sunflower decorations. “Since they are my favorite flower, I wanted them everywhere,” she says. “I wanted to be able to give the closest people to us a piece of our wedding–a piece of us–to have as a beautiful keepsake. I made them to remind me that what we are moving into cannot be rushed, and we should be patient with each other to make and keep something beautiful.” Alicia says she wouldn’t change anything about their big day, as it was “bomb.” Her favorite parts include her black wedding gown made by Aryea Kolubah, Raynanza’s “I do,” and eating their beautiful cake that tastes like “love.” The couple was married on Juneteenth, a historically black holiday, which was recognized nationally the same year. She chose a black dress, because she read how the “15th Century royals wore black,” she says. “And black is a favorite color of mine. It was perfect–the day and the dress.” In a light part of the day, the couple’s 2-year-old never made it down the aisle, ditching the ceremony and the wedding party for Alicia’s sister. “She ran off, and I assumed she was in line,” Alicia says. “She missed the wedding pictures, but she was in the reception pictures, so I was like ‘yeah OK. She really did that.’”

Your wedding should look and feel exactly how you want it to be
Alicia’s advice to brides is to start planning as early as possible, so the couple does not have to rush. “Keep calm and remember that this is your wedding, not Mom’s or Dad’s or anyone else’s,” she says. “Your wedding should look and feel exactly how you want it to be.”

BROW BOOM

On the journey to fuller brows...
choosing the right brow treatment is important. Eyebrows frame your face and add character to your facial features without us even realizing it. For example, have you ever used a funny filter that makes you have no eyebrows? Absolutely terrifying. With all the eyebrow treatments available today, it can be difficult to choose the right technique to give you the brows you’ve always dreamed of. While most treatments are a good way to add definition and shape, the small details are what make the difference. To help our readers out, we’ve compiled some of the most popular treatments on the market and how to figure out if it’s the best for you.
LAMINATION
Brow lamination involves straightening and lifting your natural eyebrow hairs using a chemical solution, allowing the hairs to be redirected and set in your desired shape. The result is fuller-looking brows that stay in place when brushed - it’s almost like a perm for brows! Lamination lasts for about six weeks and is great for those who want to fix the appearance of their brows after a bad waxing or threading experience.
MICROBLADING Microblading is a technique used to correct thin eyebrows with fine-point needles and semi-permanent pigment to give the illusion of natural, fuller-looking brows. Brow microblading usually lasts 12 to 18 months, with touch-ups recommended every six to 12 months to keep the color fresh. If you have oily skin, the color on your brows may fade quicker than other skin types, meaning you may need touch-ups more frequently. Microblading is a great option if you’re trying to get rid of thin brows, bald spots, scars, or other brow concerns.
TINTING
Eyebrow tinting is the process of applying semipermanent dye to shape and define the brows. The tint is made from vegetable dye or henna that is mixed in to match your existing shade, meaning you can get tinting done at salons or do it yourself with at-home kits. The process only takes around 15 minutes and the color can last from four to six weeks. Tinting works on all skin types and tones, but if you have gray or white hair, the process may take a little longer as gray hair is more resistant to color.
TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022 97
BROW EXTENSION
If you’re looking to add definition, volume, or shaping to your brows without committing, brow extensions could be a perfect option. Brow extensions are applied to the surface of the skin using glue and fibers. Each fiber is individually applied with tweezers and follows the growth pattern of your brows to create shape, which can take up to two hours. If the extensions are attached to existing eyebrow hair, they can last for up to a month, while extensions attached to the skin typically last up to two weeks.
POWDER BROWS
Powder brows, or ombre brows, is a semipermanent brow technique that results in soft, filled-in brows. Powder brows typically last for 12 to 18 months and are accomplished with a digital machine that allows soft pixels of color to be layered onto the brows. Powder brows are great for people with oily skin as the pigment lasts longer than microblading, and for people who already have full brows but want extra definition without having to fill them in daily.
MICROSHADING Microshading is often considered microblading’s gentler sister, as this technique uses small points to shade in sparse areas.
Microshading provides a more airbrushed and powdery brow look than microblading, though the two can be combined for the best of both worlds. The effects of this technique last anywhere from one to three years depending on your skin type and touch-ups may be needed. This is a good option for someone looking to fill and even out the color of their brows. •

BREAKING A SWEAT
CAN IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH BY ALISON CARDOZA | PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER
A
t Baptist Milestone, our goal is to change lives for the better. We know that staying active with exercise gives an enormous sense of well-being. Staying active releases endorphins giving you more energy throughout the day, enabling you to get a better night’s sleep, improves memory, and releases stress. Exercise is medicine for many mental health challenges. Participating in cardiovascular activity, lifting weights, or participating in group exercise classes can have a profoundly positive impact on our mental health - decreasing depression, ADHD, and anxiety. Exercise is a powerful depression fighter. According to a recent study at Harvard School of Public Health, exercise can reduce the risk of depression by 26%. Psychologically, exercise is a great way to improve self esteem and self efficacy. Lift your mood by lifting weights. Lifting weights can be a somewhat meditative process. Seeing your body change in a positive way and feeling stronger results in a boost of confidence.
Alison Cardoza, B.S. Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Minor in Health Promotions. ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and Fitour Group Exercise Instructor at Baptist East Milestone Wellness Center. Former University of Louisville Ladybird and NFL Indianapolis Colts Cheerleader.
Exercise can keep ADHD at bay. When you exercise, your brain releases chemicals called neurotransmitters, including dopamine which aids in attention span and clear thinking. People with ADHD have less dopamine than the average. Medications used to treat ADHD work by increasing dopamine in the brain. You could obtain the same results with exercise as a healthy alternative to medication. Please consult your doctor regarding this alternative. A natural energy release to help with anxiety that does not require medication is exercise. Medication could become addictive and cause side effects. Exercise helps keep stress at bay. Exerting our energy in a positive way with movement will help our muscles relax, keep tension and headaches away, and elevate our spirit. My client, Tiffini Smith, began working out with me not only to lose weight and gain confidence, but to improve her mental health. “Living with depression, ADHD, and anxiety, I have spent a lot of time, energy, and money trying to feel better,” she says. She would start medication only to quickly discover that the side effects were far worse than her actual symptoms on what she calls the triple threat (depression, ADHD, and anxiety). “I would find myself chasing the newest pill with the hope of a more positive mental state. I learned that medications release dopamine and serotonin, so when I discovered exercise did the same, I decided exercise would be my new pill.” The only side effects Tiffini is faced with now is feeling good mentally and physically. “I am loving my new medication,” she says. Let’s face it, if we have been injured in the past and are dealing with physical pain, or have been through a stressful time in our life mentally, many turn to medication to cope. The struggle of getting out of bed in the morning and starting your day can feel like the biggest obstacle. Putting one foot in front of the other and tackling everyday in a positive way will result in a healthier you. Let a family member, friend or even a personal trainer at Baptist Milestone be your confidant. Put your trust into someone that cares about you as an individual. Start today improving your mental health with a walk outside or a trip to the gym.

Why Do I Have Spider Veins? BY DAWN ANDERSON PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER BEFORE & AFTER COURTESY PHOTOS

D
r. Steve Samuel and his wife, Lori, began the venous insufficiency practice Comprehensive Vein Care in Jeffersonville, Indiana three years ago. According to Dr. Samuel, spider veins are one of the physical signs associated with venous insufficiency. Your heart pumps blood through your arteries to get to your feet. The veins’ function is to then return that blood to your heart. The veins, unlike your arteries, have valves. When the valves malfunction, the blood en route to your heart falls backward towards your feet causing pressure from your groin to your toes, potentially resulting in spider veins. Contributing factors to spider veins include:
AFTER
Venous insufficiency is present and severe in 40% of patients who have spider veins. Severe venous insufficiency must be treated first or any spider vein treatment will fail. Dr. Samuel treats spider veins with sclerotherapy which involves a direct injection to the veins with Asclera. After treatment, it takes 4-6 weeks to notice the full effects. Patients require one to four treatments depending on the severity of their spider veins. Please call Dr. Samuel for a detailed consultation and workup for your spider veins. Dr. Samuel has a referral program. Each new referral qualifies you for a free sclerotherapy session.

Regarding medications, Miller tells clients, “If there’s a commercial for it on TV, we can probably get it at a reduced cost.” To enhance its reach and clinic care systems, BluMine™ Health has forged a
strategic alliance with Baptist Health® for Direct Employer Strategies. BluMine™ refers companies seeking “white glove” access to specialty care and other services not already provided by BluMine™. “Our members are put at the head of the list for specialty care services.”

estaurateur Guy Genoud and his wife, photographer/marketing director Stacy Duncan, opened Brasserie Provence in 2013, seeking to recreate the feeling of a comfortable Provençal neighborhood restaurant in the south of France. Conveniently located near the University of Louisville’s Shelby campus and the intersection of the Hurstbourne Lane and Shelbyville Road business corridors, Brasserie Provence has an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere conducive to the business lunch. “We offer a quiet environment good for conversation, with continued table spacing for a sense of comfort, safety, and semi-privacy,” says Genoud. The waitstaff provides unobtrusive, efficient service, respectful of the guests’ flow of conversation. “Our clientele appreciates the quality of the service and the cuisine.” Brasserie Provence serves Southern French comfort food based on healthy Mediterranean cuisine. Genoud’s forty years of luxury hotel and fine dining experience and Chef Patrick Gosden’s culinary creativity and skill elevate the menu.
108 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022
Genoud recommends some classic business lunch favorites, starting with French Onion Soup topped with Gruyère and mozzarella and the Groganica Farms aquaponic Bibb Lettuce salad. The Steak Frites feature grilled hanger steak with shallot tarragon butter and mesclun salad. From the Sandwiches section of the menu, Genoud highlights the Grilled Chicken Breast Provençale with tomato, goat cheese, basil, and tapenade on ciabatta and the Hamburger with tomato, Brie, pancetta, caramelized onions, and red pepper aioli on brioche. June sees the return of Brasserie Provence’s Ahi Tuna Niçoise Salad. The restaurant can also accommodate large lunch meetings and events in the private dining salon with special menu options and complimentary use of the A-V screen and projector. Outdoor seating is available for clement weather this summer. For more information, visit brasserieprovence.com and follow @ brasserieprovence on Facebook and Instagram.
Bristol Bar & Grille Bristol Bar & Grille is a beloved Louisville original with locations in the Highlands, Downtown, and East End. Bristol Downtown and Bristol East are open for lunch Monday through Saturday, with Bristol East also offering Sunday Brunch. Main Street Management Associates Executive Vice President and Director of Operations T.J. Oakley describes Bristol Bar & Grille as always welcoming to those gathering for business meetings, whether in the dining room or private event space. Bristol Downtown is convenient to Humana, the Louisville Bar Association, the courthouse, and City Hall. It has exclusive and semi-private dining spaces and a terrace and bar for more casual venues to seal the deal. Bristol East has proximity to Humana and Churchill Downs offices and is ideally situated near Hurstbourne Lane and Shelbyville Road. Featured areas of the newly renovated dining room provide a semi-private feel. Bristol Bar & Grille’s service has been known for its professionalism and consistency for 45 years. Oakley begins his Lunch Menu suggestions with the legendary Green Chili Wontons: fried wontons stuffed with Monterey Jack cheese and green chiles and served with guacamole sauce. Perhaps equally famous is the Bristol Burger with beef dry-aged and sourced from Wendell Berry’s Berry Beef Farms. While an excellent vegetarian choice, Thai Stir Fry is a Bristol Classic with the option to add shrimp or chicken. On the lighter side, try the Grilled Chicken & Spinach Salad or Grilled Salmon Teriyaki, another Bristol Classic. The fresh spinach salad has roasted garlic, red onion, sun-dried tomatoes, bacon, croutons, goat cheese, balsamic vinaigrette, and grilled chicken breast. The teriyaki Atlantic salmon filet is served with fresh vegetables. In addition to business lunches, Bristol Downtown is perfect for dinner and a show as PNC Broadway in Louisville presents the award-winning, smash-hit musical Hamilton June 7-19 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. For reservations, visit bristolbarandgrille.com. Follow @BristolBarandGrille on Facebook and @bristolbarandgrilleky on Instagram.
Sidebar At Whiskey Row In service of business lunches, Sidebar At Whiskey Row prides itself on consistency. According to Managing Partner Chip Herchert, “We have remained consistent throughout, using the same distributors, ingredients, and liquors. We haven’t cheapened or changed any of them. The employees and management are committed.” The restaurant celebrated its 9th anniversary in Louisville this May. Sidebar’s convenient downtown Louisville location and menu variety keep patrons coming back for more. “We have foods that people want to eat,” says Herchert. “The staff is tremendous and genuinely cares about our customers. We are proud to stand behind our menu and the food.” The clever, legal-themed menu at Sidebar categorizes the food and drink items into various phases of a criminal trial. Herchert recommends starting lunch with Hot VS. Brown Fries - topped with beer cheese, roasted turkey, applewood bacon, and tomatoes - or the award-winning Chopped Kale Salad with fresh grilled salmon. Sidebar is famous for its burgers containing a proprietary blend of Certified Angus Beef® with ground chuck, buttery brisket, and sweet short rib for a steakhouse burger experience. In addition to over ten beef burger options, the Material Witness salmon filet and Alternate Juror shaved pork bologna with beer cheese are delicious sandwich choices. The restaurant was also the first in the city to offer Beyond Burger®. Add a little fun to an otherwise buttoned-up business lunch with a hand-blended ice cream shake. Try a Not Guilty non-alcoholic shake such as Caramel Apple Bacon. Or go Guilty, take the afternoon off, and celebrate with the boozy Bourbon Ball featuring Buffalo Trace® Bourbon Cream, fudge, and candied pecans. Sidebar at Whiskey Row is open for lunch Wednesday through Saturday and serves dinner Thursday through Saturday. For more information, follow @SidebarLou on Facebook. TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022 109
Redlands Grill Conveniently located near the St. Matthews shopping district and Hurstbourne business corridor, Redlands Grill opened in Louisville in 1998 as J. Alexander’s®. According to Louisville General Manager Ryan Paulson, 12 J. Alexander’s locations were strategically rebranded as Redlands Grill in recent years. The restaurant’s ambiance and consistent food quality remain a favorite among the business lunch crowd. High-backed booths with glass partitions provide secluded and quiet spots for crucial conversations. Redlands Grill is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. If lunch hour time constraints are an issue, Paulson and his staff make it possible for guests to get in and out faster. “Our level of service, attention to detail, and exceptional food made from scratch are all delivered in a timely manner.” This “chef-driven, boutique-style restaurant” has a classic, gastropub-style menu with enough variety for every taste, new featured items that change daily, and in-season vegetable selections. Paulson recommends the salad selections for lunch, including the Southern Salad with chopped crispy chicken tenders, pecans, avocado, tomatoes, bacon, cheese, croutons, and Classic Ranch dressing. Redlands Grill grinds fresh chuck daily for their “hand-pattied” burgers. The Old Fashioned Cheeseburger with Tillamook cheddar is “one of the best in town,” says Paulson. The West End grilled chicken sandwich with Monterey Jack is another popular choice. The restaurant also offers hand-cut steaks finished with Maître d’ butter for a more indulgent lunch. Choose from French Brasserie style Steak ‘N’ Fries, Steak Maui marinated ribeye, aged New York Strip, or Filet Mignon with Béarnaise. No meal at Redlands Grill would be complete without the “to-die-for” carrot cake, served warm and easy to share. Try Redlands Grill’s sister restaurant, also owned by parent company SPB Hospitality, Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill at Paddock Shops, as an evening “power dinner” option. Visit redlandsgrill.com and follow @redlandsgrilllouisville on Facebook.

SUPERCHEF FERGUSON WRITTEN BY DAWN ANDERSON | PHOTO BY T.A. YERO
When situations change, you should change. I didn’t have to be angry anymore. I could be myself. 114 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022
T
his spring, Darnell SuperChef Ferguson is on the cusp of making his wildest dreams come true. Already Chef/Owner of multiple restaurants and a successful contender and respected judge on several Food Network competition shows, Ferguson feels accomplished but by no means satisfied. While developing and building on SuperChef Brands LLC, he has been busy with various national television appearances and reaching back to encourage up-and-coming young
Black chefs and entrepreneurs. Darnell Ferguson grew up in neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Columbus, Ohio, which he describes as a harsh environment. “Mom made sure we didn’t lack anything. And I had a great stepdad and a great childhood. But sports and being an athlete was the only dream for kids coming out of those places.” Ferguson struggled in school and faced the fact early on that professional sports
would not be his path. “I spent a lot of time at my cousin’s house, where we made breakfast and got creative with weird food combinations. I wasn’t aware of what a chef was, so I couldn’t see it as an option.” Watching Emeril Lagasse on Food Network, Ferguson admired his chef’s whites, as he did most uniforms. “If I wasn’t a chef, I’d be a Navy Seal because I like structure. That’s probably why the French brigade system (in
TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022 115
restaurant hierarchy) appealed to me so much. When you come from a chaotic environment, structure is attractive.” But when the Navy recruiter at his high school mentioned Ferguson’s braids being cut off, that was the end of the Navy Seal aspirations. Ferguson found his way to vocational school and got a tutor who sparked his educational success. “I made the honor roll from then on. We are still in touch, and they are a pivotal person in my life,” as is his vocational school teacher who administered his first knife skills test. Ferguson received a 100% perfect score. “Until junior year in high school, no one besides my mom had told me I was special or could do great things. My heart really desired that. When she (his vocational school teacher) told me that, I ran with it. ‘I’m gonna be a chef!’ One conversation can change the trajectory of your life.” In 2005, Ferguson moved to Louisville to attend culinary school at Sullivan University. But his experience there was a struggle at first. He couldn’t get anyone to cosign a loan, so he had to work during the day and

go to night school with much older adults. Ferguson thrived in the labs, though. After about six months, he was able to attend daytime classes and was selected to cook for Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Following the popularity of the online cooking classes he offered and his work as a breakfast cook at Proof on Main, it was time for Ferguson to strike out on his own and begin building what is now an impressive and thriving restaurant portfolio. “When I saw the menu prices at Proof, I knew I could do it myself.” In 2012, the SuperChef empire began with pop-ups in a small gyro restaurant. But simultaneously, Ferguson was going through an existential crisis. “I was getting concerned with who I am going to be instead of what am I going to be.” Ferguson had overcome both homelessness and incarceration on his journey, and he hadn’t fully dealt with that until he began attending Southeast Christian Church. “When situations change, you should change. I didn’t have to be angry anymore. I could be myself. I never imagined how
the pop-ups would then explode through our guerrilla marketing. We prepped and cooked all day and put flyers on cars at night. We never slept. We were so excited. Through three years of pop-ups, our mission was to ‘be great now.’ That consistency and belief made the difference, even though the pop-up locations and settings were not always ideal.” His restaurant mentor Larry Goss believed in Ferguson and helped him with better locations to serve the sold-out five-course dinners. He also reiterated to Ferguson that it wasn’t all about his craft but about who he was. Ferguson and childhood friend Ryan Bryson opened the daytime breakfast spot SuperChefs in Louisville in 2015, featuring their “Urban Eclectic” cuisine style, blending traditional flavors in nontraditional ways with a creative presentation. After a devastating fire just a few months into operation, celebrity chefs and television producers swooped in, offering to help Ferguson share his story. Through those media appearances and opportunities, he was able to reopen SuperChefs and start giving back to the community. Ferguson’s restaurant holdings have since expanded to The Haunted House Restaurant in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Superhero Chefs in Hunstville and Tuscumbia, Alabama, SuperChefs Express in the University of Louisville Student Activity Center, and Tha Drippin Crab in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood. He spends time with his wife and their eight children at their home in Alabama.
As his restaurant endeavors have grown, so has Ferguson’s burgeoning television career. Following an appearance on Guy’s Grocery Games, Rachael Ray, Steve Harvey, and Ellen Degeneres all came calling for an exclusive story with Ferguson. Figuring Rachael Ray could deliver the Food Network sort of audience Ferguson was seeking, he chose her show and was surprised with an appearance by his inspiration, Emeril Lagasse.

Ferguson has also appeared on Beat Bobby Flay and various programs on Cooking Channel, Travel Channel, and Christian Broadcasting Network. In 2018, he won the Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge hosted by Giada De Laurentiis. As the lowest seed in Guy Fieri’s first season of Tournament of Champions, Ferguson defeated top seed and Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli. He was a 4-seed in the second season and entered the show’s most recent third season as a number-one seed. His own cooking show one day will feature everyday ingredients. “I want to present a style of food that is relatable to the masses but prepared in a way you’ve never seen before,” says Ferguson. “I want to become the face of a network, a face like no one’s ever seen. And I want to reach back and shine a light on others.” Ferguson firmly believes cooking is also about feeding, and he plans to help stop hunger by building relationships with brands and companies. “I will perfect these strategies in Louisville, then spread them to other cities and around the world.” Ferguson’s SuperChefs Academy will be an
opportunity to expose young chefs from the inner city to “possibilities, experiences, and motivation.” According to Ferguson, “Who you think you are is most important. Focus on character more than career, and the career will take care of itself. How did I make it out? It’s that belief.”

AMPED Russell Technology Business Incubator BY KATHIE STAMPS
O
n Feb. 24, the inaugural cohort of 34 businesses graduated from the AMPED Russell Technology Business Incubator (RTBI). The 34 Black and Latinx business owners started their year-long business incubator program on Feb. 15, 2021. RTBI launched in January 2021 as a state-of-theart Black business incubator and technology service center. “RTBI will provide the support small businesses need to launch in West Louisville communities,” said Dave W. Christopher Sr., founder and executive director of AMPED, the Academy of Music Production Education and Development. Through this business incubator, participants receiving training and support for their specific industry and for business services in general, including assessments and referrals, meetings with a personal business coach and a wealth strategist, access to seed capital so they can purchase equipment and inventory, unlimited mental health counseling, stipends for living expenses, and pitch competitions to teach them how to raise funds for their businesses. “Within three to five years, RTBI will be a national model for creating spaces for businesses that foster economic growth, mobility, entrepreneurship and independence,” Dave said. RTBI participants also have the opportunity to complete the Business Foundations Specialization Certification offered through Coursera. This credential takes business owners through analyzing and improving business processes in services or manufacturing, managing people through motivation and reward systems, reading balance sheets and cash flow statements, and understanding branding and go-to-market strategies. Who qualifies for the Russell Technology Business Incubator? “Black or Latinx businesses that are startup or existing businesses,” said Dave. “Businesses are asked to apply. They are interviewed by a small panel of business leaders and business educators and 34 businesses are selected for the year-long cohort.” The second class began their year-long cohort on Jan. 15.

Monica Stewart is director of operations for AMPED, the Academy of Music Production Education and Development. She has been a student of four business learning opportunities, one of which was the first cohort of AMPED RTBI. “While participating in RTBI, I was able to connect to some of the fundamental resources I needed to move my business to the next level,” she said, “such as coaching, wealth strategy, financial learning opportunities, branding, marketing, and website design and development.” Monica established her business, Transitions Caregiver Solutions (TCS), in 2018 to connect caregivers to the resources they need from early diagnosis to end of life for their loved ones, based on her own family member’s experience with vascular dementia. “I was also awarded a grant from Humana based on my focus on health disparities, which will allow me to recreate my website and eventually develop an app,” she said. “I am so thankful for RTBI for exposing me to various resources to move my business to the next level and look forward to what TCS has in store for the future and our community as a whole!” Brittany Hill was hired as the RTBI Manager after an extensive search for a candidate to manage the incubator at AMPED Russell Technology Business Incubator. “I see the impact in the Louisville Community of the successful businesses that graduated from AMPED’s 2021 cohort,” she said. As the manager of RTBI, she is here to build upon and expand the program’s successful development model.
“My role is to support our founders by providing a structured foundation within the incubator that supports economic growth, mobility, entrepreneurship and independence,” Brittany said. She also provides guidance for the RTBI business foundations by managing a powerful “Learning Journey,” a program designed to support and foster generational wealth. One aspect of the “Learning Journey” consists of classes presented by experts and experienced professionals to educate Black and Latinx founders on all aspects of business development and sustainability, ranging from capital readiness to supporting mental wellness for entrepreneurs. “Additionally, I provide networking opportunities by connecting businesses to other strategic and community partners and investors,” said Brittany. “We want the community to, as best they can, support and encourage Black and Latinx businesses by spending money with them and spreading the word about these businesses,” Dave said. “It is important to have organizations like AMPED that are laser-focused on real solutions for underserved and under-represented communities with the understanding that we have support for youth and their families. There is no child living in poverty without a parent or guardian who also lives in poverty.”

TODD DUNN:
ON A MISSION TO SERVE BY HEATHER FRENCH HENRY, MDES | COURTESY PHOTOS
T
odd Dunn is the epitome of a true public servant. Honored by the Ford Motor Company with the Ford Oval of Honor Award on May 1, 2022 at Churchill Downs, Dunn’s story of service to country and community is inspiring. A fifth generation service member, Dunn served his country in the US Army as a Combat Military Policeman/Investigator during the Iraq-Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
“My father was in the Army. My uncle was in the Marines. My other uncle was also
in the Marines. My grandfather served 30 years in the Navy. So I just wanted to honor their service and carry on tradition. I wanted to be an MP…a military policeman, that’s how I ended up in the Army,” Dunn recalls. After he joined the Army, he was deployed overseas. “We got a call the day after
Christmas to mobilize to go to Desert Storm,” states Dunn. “It was the first time that I saw my father cry or shed a tear,”
Dunn said. “He grabbed my hand and said, ‘I’ll see you when you get home.’ ” During his deployment, Dunn was also faced with the loss of life at the young age of 19.
“I was working on two individuals when a British doctor came up. He said, ‘sorry, this chap’s dead.’ And I said, ‘No, he’s not.’ And I kept trying to work on him, and he kind of pushed me aside. He said, ‘He’s gone, son. He’s gone.’ And that was really hard at 19,” recalls Dunn.
“I would like to do as much, if not more. I don’t think that there is any retirement from military life.” 122 TOPS LOUISVILLE | JUNE 2022
During his transition to civilian life, Dunn wanted to continue to make a difference. “I got a job with the Veterans Administration at the V.A. Medical Center as a police officer. I saw a lot of different servicemen and women at different points in their lives, a lot more downs than ups. That’s when my desire to help veterans was really turned on.” After his service at the VA Medical Center, Dunn began his career at the Ford Motor Company as a Vehicle Assembly Technician in the Commercial Light Truck Department in1995. He quickly found his calling within the United Auto Workers (UAW). Serving as District Committeeman, Vice President and now President, Dunn continues his passion of helping others, especially his fellow veterans.
“One of our standing committees within our structure of the UAW, is the Veterans Committee. It’s one of the core standing committees of all UAW’s across the United States. I got on the Veterans Committee as soon as I got hired,” says Dunn proudly. One of his proudest efforts as part of the Veterans Committee is the Ramp Team. Born out of the need to assist a man named Wayne Vickers with a much needed wheel chair ramp for his home. “We collected some money at the end of meeting and wanted to go over and build him a ramp. Today, we’ve built over 500 ramps in the community!”
in the building of the Vietnam Memorial, in Elizabethtown, KY. “It really meant a lot to us. It was a huge project that took us a while to do, but it was very proud moment when it was done and it still is,” recalls Dunn. Dunn’s list of projects is long. From leadership in the UAW to his role with Active Heroes, a 147 acre retreat for veterans and first responders, he has no plans to slow down. **Along with Dunn, others that were honored with the Ford Oval of Honor were Sergeant Major Monte Lash and SPC Brandon Mullins (posthumously.) Attending for Brandon were his parents, Kathy and Tom Mullins who have become leaders within the Gold Star Family community.
