RICHARD HOXWORTH Owning a home is key to the American Dream, and Richard Hoxworth loves making it happen for his clients. Once work hours are over, not everyone finds the motivation to stay active. This means you’re driven by routine, conscious of your emotional and physical health, and prefer to leave your cares at the gym, rather than bring them into your home oasis. However, it’s important to give your body a rest now and again, as recuperation time is not only beneficial for physical health, but can help prevent burnout for the long haul.

Flexibility is a skill, and one just as important to cultivate as rigid commitment. If you find yourself out of sorts if you miss just one day of working out, you might want to pay some attention to your routines and motivations, and rebalance your commitments and fitness routine accordingly.

Round-the-Clock Hustle If you’re the type to bring work home with you, you aren’t alone. While your motivation to work nonstop is admirable, it’s also important to make the mental transition from workplace to home, establishing the time to hustle and the time to relax. Just like those that hit the gym without fail after a long day, sometimes you’ll need to practice saying no. If your work life is indistinguishable from your personal life, it’ll be hard to catch a break and recharge.

This means burnout, frayed nerves, and missed details will soon be on the horizon. Of course, round-the-clock hustle is a strength, too. You’re passionate about your work, care deeply about doing things right, and failure is not an option.

Just make sure that you establish some foundational boundaries so that you maintain an 18

appropriate, healthy balance between your time at work and your time at home with the loved ones and hobbies you cherish. If making way for downtime isn’t easy, try penciling it in the way you would a work engagement. Dinner with a friend, a date night with a significant other, or a solo movie fest can be readily added to your calendar, and thus built in to your regimented schedule.

Turn to Food If your first instinct after work is to eat, it can say a few different things about your routine.

Perhaps you’ve been so on-the-go all the day that you haven’t had time for lunch. In this case, you might need to regiment your schedule with more purpose aimed towards downtime and self-care; food is fuel, after all. If you head home and gorge after an average day, you may be turning to food as a way to relieve stress.

In this case, you may need to reassess some of your post-work habits and find a healthier balance and outlet for your tension. Taking a walk, grabbing fresh ingredients for dinner, hitting the gym, or decompressing by catching up with a friend or a good book—all are healthier, more balanced ways of executing the transition from the office to the home. Pay attention to your consumption post-work. Determine how hungry or satiated you really are before making a grab for the nearest sustenance.

People decompress in all different ways after getting home from the office, but always remember that routines are telling. Don’t take your daily actions and impulses for granted. Examine the root behind your well-worn practices, and you may detect nuances at play beneath the surface that can you help you recalibrate for the better.

SHEILA PEREZ After serving in the military and switching into the reserves, Sheila Perez decided to move into an industry that a lot of her friends were already in: Mortgage. She immediately loved it and realized that it was where she was meant to be. “It’s a hard business, but it’s worth it. We’re experts and we’re giving value,” she says. In the last eighteen years, Sheila has worked her way up and is now a partner and co-branch manager at a mortgage branch in Oakland, California working with a team of five. While her product line includes almost everything, she specializes in VA, first-time homebuyer loans and jumbo loans.

After being in the business for so long, Sheila’s clients are almost all past clients or referrals from agents. She makes the process of securing a loan really straightforward for clients, which is why they keep coming back to her. Sheila is great at reading people and knows how to explain things so that they feel comfortable moving forward. She also has years of experience working as a Senior loan processor, so she has the in-depth knowledge of everything that is happening in a transaction.

“I’ve been doing this for so long and I know what my clients are going to need,” she says. “When it comes to agents, they tell me that I don’t worry them. I take the stress off of them.” At the end of the day, Sheila considers her colleagues and clients to be her friends. “My business is personal,” she explains.

Sheila is on the committee of the YPN, the Young Professionals Network as well as the Affiliate committee of the BRDGE Association of REALTORS®. She’s also involved in NAHREP, the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. Sheila believes strongly in helping the Latino community with understanding mortgage loans. “I’m Spanish speaking and there is not a lot of information on this topic for my community. I want to help educate them and get more involved to assist them with getting loans,” she says.

Last year, Sheila completed 79 transactions, which 20

totaled $45 million in sales volume. These numbers are even more impressive when you consider that she was working parttime, caring for her now two-year-old daughter, and taking her fourteen-yearold student athlete to school, practice and games. This year, she has plans to scale up her marketing efforts, reaching out to more REALTORS® in particular. No matter who she works with, she emphasizes that they are more than just numbers to her. “I want to promote them and vice versa. I’m a team player and the best business happens when you collaborate.”

Once her partner retires, Sheila plans to take over the business. She wants to expand and get into reverse mortgage, where there is a huge market. Ultimately, she plans to keep doing all that she can to help people get the loans they need. “It’s really hard to get a loan. It’s an exhausting process and we put our all into it. There is such a satisfaction that comes from completing this act in such a short timeframe. Sometimes we only have fifteen days to secure a loan — making the impossible happen is what we do!”

VLORA SHALA Mortgage broker Vlora Shala is a Bronx girl. So in 1993 when a company gave her a choice of cities to work in, it was an easy decision. “I chose the Bronx simply because that’s my community,” she says. “I am Albanian, I speak fluent Albanian, and I knew I needed to serve my community. Throughout my career, I honestly always, even though I changed companies, I always serve Bronx communities. Always.” In the two decades that Vlora has been in the mortgage industry, she has helped thousands of families buy their dream home. It’s a responsibility that she does not take lightly. “That’s my passion, helping families. “What better job to have, where you’re changing families’ lives, kids’ lives,” she says. “It’s so rewarding. I was a loan officer that was always marketing consumers directly,” she says.

Named top producer at ASAP for the past two years, Vlora still makes time for big family dinners on the weekends. “Spending time with my family is very important to me. The weekend is all about the family and cooking. I love cooking and cooking for the family. Everybody comes over every weekend,” she says. “We cook and we hang out and we chill.

It all started back in 2000 right after Lindsay had her first baby, when a neighbor had asked her if she wanted to help her and learn processing. Fast forward to today, Lindsay now owns and runs her own mortgage business with a team of four who all share in her passion and dedication to helping clients with their dream of home ownership.

Throughout all her years in the mortgage business, Lindsay has become known for her work in helping clients whose files may be a little on the tougher side and require more hand holding than most, but if you were to ask her where her passion is, hands down she says it is on the VA side of the business and helping veterans get into their forever home, or wherever their next duty station may be. Always looking to create an educated clientele and help veterans whenever she can, Lindsay volunteers to answer questions online every eight days for free. With no solicitation, her goal is merely to provide answers and explain the VA process to those who need some clarification to get them on their way to their dream.

Due to the CARE Finance motto of being “education based, community focused,” 70% of Lindsay’s clients are referral or repeat business. They love her process of communication and education that she provides every step of the way. Lindsay wants to make sure that every client walks away understanding the mechanics of their home loan / buying process, how it will work and how it will impact them short and long term. Making sure everyone is comfortable, informed and happy during such an important, and potentially stressful time, is high on her priority list. Her office focuses a lot on supporting their local community and they are involved in nearly every charity event in town, as well as specialized agent education programs. in the form of being the first sponsor of the First Folsom Police Gala, a charity event that raised over $100,000 for the local police force.

Quarterly client appreciation parties, postcards, closing packages, phone calls and CRM managed contacts keeps the marketing machine rolling. In the Realtor® world, it’s agent to agent word of mouth more than anything else that leads to new business. Seeing the care given to each client and transaction is the strongest marketing she has. This education-based marketing technique took her group to $67 million in transactions last year.

Lindsay loves looking at the challenges clients brings to her, so she can work out a solution by examining client strategy goals. If there’s a client that thinks their situation makes a loan an impossibility, that’s what gets Lindsay going. Even though the future of the market seems uncertain, her team will continue working to educate the community in their products and Lindsay is joining a government affairs team focused on making changes to benefit veteran homeowners at a government level. LAUREN STAMPER With a mother who owned her own mortgage bank, originator Lauren Stamper was exposed to the lending business at a very young age. However, it took Lauren several years of working in medical device sales and marketing to realize that following in her mom’s footsteps in the mortgage industry might be the best fit for her to build her career in. Her desire to work more directly with consumers and make a difference in people’s lives were the driving factors to the career change. After six and a half years in the mortgage business now, she’s a Senior Loan Originator at Highlands Residential Mortgage in Plano, Texas, where she spends her days helping people purchase and refinance their homes. Ranked as a Top 1% Originator in America for the past two years, it’s safe to say that Lauren has found her calling.

Working on The Tish Ashley team with her mother and six assistants, they’ve created a dependable, efficient process with a boutique approach. “We make sure nothing falls through the cracks while really building relationships and properly educating our clients from day one,” says Lauren. Lauren has had two kids in the last three years, so a lot of her time away from work is dedicated to them. However, she still manages to give back in her community and has causes that she regularly supports. “I volunteer with Belle and Sparrows who serve marginalized women and equip them with skills to re-enter society with confidence,” she says. Lauren also loves supporting Honi’s Coffee House, who use their mobile coffee station as a platform to mentor and develop underserved kids locally and in Honduras.

Lauren is very happy with the business she has built and plans to continue on her path for the foreseeable future.

What do they wish was different? How might things be streamlined? What skills do they wish they possessed? Encourage team members to be imaginative and wrestle with the hurdles or questions they’ve been grappling with. When time is up, split employees into smaller breakout groups and allow them to share their thoughts with one another. Not only will this ignite thoughtful discussion, but it will also allow team members the chance to brainstorm creatively, while articulating their ideas and visions for the road ahead.
