I am very proud to welcome you to our second edition of ESTETICA AFRO. It feels like just the other day I introduced you to our launch edition. Yet here we are in a new year with a brand new edition. We received an amazing response from our readers and were thrilled to receive your exciting feedback. This year we promise to continue bringing you the latest ethnic hair fashion trends from style gurus across the globe. Sultry Sirens, pages 18-21, takes a closer look at the hair styles of international award-winning female musicians and savvy business women. Speaking of which, I’m sure you have noticed our very own local songstress, Lira, on the front cover of this edition. I was fortunate enough to interview the lovely Lira, pages 10-13, and got the inside scoop on her five must-have travel essentials and fashion fetishes. In this edition, ESTETICA AFRO explores the disturbing truth about the continuous and over usage of extensions, braiding and relaxing. Local Trichologist, Elma Titus, explains the most common form of hair loss among African women in Hair Tension, pages 54-55. There has always been controversy around dreadlocks and the wearers of them. Rumour has it, pages 24-26, separates fact from rumour and gets to the bottom of the many myths surrounding dreadlocks. ESTETICA AFRO is excited to announce the opening of the Royal Hairstyles Training Academy in Johannesburg, which specialises in ethnic hairdressing. Find out more information about the academy on pages 56-57. We love hearing from you, whether it’s about your accomplishments, recent photo shoots and collections, industry news and events, or product information. Feel free to send us your comments on our latest edition. ESTETICA AFRO looks forward to inspiring and educating you in 2012!

African

Soul

Local soul vocalist, Lira, shares her experience as a South African female in the music industry and reveals her beauty secrets and fashion fetishes. At the age of 32, you have quite a long list of accomplishments. What was it like for you as a young South African woman stepping into the music industry? At the start of my career I was signed as the new face of R&B and Soul, within a Kwaito label. In order to introduce me into the market, it was thought, that by collaborating with the Kwaito acts within the label, I could get exposure. However, the general public viewed me as a Kwaito singer. By the time I launched my album, the Kwaito stigma had stuck. I subsequently left and signed with Sony Africa to relaunch myself. I had no idea how it was all going to turn out. I went with what I felt was the most authentic expression of myself. I was determined to use my voice and gift to create a positive change and to be an example of possibility… success followed. There are only a handful of really successful musicians in South Africa and there is only so much we can do within our small territory. I have been fortunate to break many barriers. How did you get into music and what was your first break? When I was an undergraduate student, I studied accounting and

lira-interview-new layout.indd 2

exchanged my skills for recording time at a local studio. I had my first demo at the age of 18. When I graduated, I continued in accounting for a couple years, but soon resigned and created a five-year plan for my music career. In 2000, I began working with musician and producer Arthur Mafokate and was signed to his record label, 999 Music. He helped with the release of my debut album, All My Love which was released in 2003. The album was ground-breaking with eight songs out of a 14 track album on high rotation. The title track reached the number two position on our billboards, kicking Beyonce’s song ‘Dangerously in Love’ off that spot. This was the first time a South African artist had received as much air play as our American counterparts. How would you describe your music and what genre would you classify it as? My music combines Soul, R&B and jazz funk, sung in English and a combination of three native languages. I call it Afro Soul. My music is deliberately positive and upbeat. There’s enough negativity in the world and I have no desire to add to it. People seek solace in music and I want mine to be an uplifting experience.

Who do you admire in the local and international music industry? Internationally, I love John Legend; he has such an old school soulful voice. When I met him he came across as extremely humble and down to earth, qualities that I really admire. A huge influence in my formative years was Lauryn Hill. I’ve always loved her songwriting. As a songwriter myself, I love the beauty and simplicity of John Meyers compositions. Locally, Miriam Makeba is at the top of my list. She remains our greatest African global icon. I believe, in terms of music within Africa, Nigeria is taking over, with artists such as D’banj and Mr Incredible (M.I.), who are doing phenomenal things. Mr Coconut Man from Zanzibar rocks my world at the moment and I love Angelique Kidjo’s funky African dancing and maintaining her legacy. Your latest music video “Phakade” is a romantic love story. Is it based on a personal experience and is there someone “special” in your life? Yes, I am married, but I reveal very little about my private life. I think it’s good to separate my personal life from my public life. It helps me cope with the demands of my career. However “Phakade” was

filmed to get people in touch with that old school sense of simple and everlasting love in an African environment. Often young lovers were not allowed to show their affection publicly, so they found secluded places to meet. With your hectic tour schedule how do you manage to keep your appearance fresh and flawless? My lifestyle is very demanding, which forces me to take everything into consideration in order to stay in top form. I need to eat light; my diet is 40-50 percent raw foods

- no meat, some fish, lots of salad and plenty of water. I also always keep a great moisturiser and sun block with a SPF 50 on hand, as well as take a vitamin C supplement as a general health measure. To alleviate dry skin I use my mother’s concoction of Vaseline, Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, and Bio-Oil, which I’ve been using since I was a child. My mother is in her mid-fifties and still has beautiful skin. I also try to go to the spa once a week where I get the works – a manicure and pedicure, reflexology and a scalp and back massage. I call it my “me-me-me” time. What are your five must-have travel essentials? 1. Iman Stick foundation, it’s small enough to fit into a sling bag, which I usually use when I travel. 2. My favourite perfumes; Flower Bomb by Viktor & Rolf for winter or Addicted to Life by Christian Dior for summer. 3. Soft SheenCarson Sta-Sof-Fro for my hair. 4. Innoxa Hydrating Moisturiser for my face. 5. Revlon Custom Eyes mascara. What beauty and hair products can you not live without? I keep my hair moisturised with Soft SheenCarson Sta-Sof-Fro hair products. It works like magic. I tried a lot of products but nothing kept my hair soft and shiny without making it greasy. My face is relatively dry but tends to be oily around the forehead and nose areas and I struggled to find a product that would adequately hydrate the rest of my face

lira-interview-new layout.indd 4

without making it oily. Innoxa Hydrating Moisturiser has the perfect combination and leaves my skin nourished and glowing. You have always taken a very natural approach to your hair. Are you not a fan of weaves, braids and relaxing? While I was in college, I made extra cash by running a hair salon from my room at the student village. My own hair had to always be well groomed in order to promote my services, so I always had it relaxed, styled and sometimes I put highlights on it. This resulted in my hair becoming thin and weak. Instead I hid it with braids which caused my hair line to recede. After all the damage I had caused my hair over the years, I decided to leave my hair natural. My hair has since become my trade mark. It is really the easiest hair style to have. My hair is thick healthy, soft and beautiful. I can rock it with any look and don’t feel restricted. It reveals my face and neck and allows me to play around with accessories. I plait it when I feel like doing something different but not for long periods of time to avoid damaging my hair. You always look amazingly chic and on trend. Explain your unique fashion style and where do you like to shop? My style is very embracing of my African roots. Nothing reflects who we are as well as our own designs. I love custom made clothes from Stone Cherrie, bold neck pieces and earrings are my weakness. I love shopping at Wag on Long Street, Rene Mariane in

I’ve done amazingly well at home, so now it’s time for me to spread my wings.

Morningside, The Space in Rosebank and flea markets. When abroad, Rome is my favourite shopping destination. I find the most unique clothes, shoes and accessories, like Giorgio Sermoneta gloves which the Italians do best. Femme Sistina has some very innovative yet elegant women’s wear as well as brands like Fendi, Gucci and Chanel. Do you have any fashion fetishes? Yes, my current fashion fetish is cat suits! I found awesome cat suits, at Cameroon Clothing in Morningside Shopping Centre, Johannesburg. They are extremely versatile and can be worn during the day and glammed up at night. I liked them so much I bought every design they had, and I wore them throughout summer!

where I became the only second African vocalist to grace the Teatro del Greco stage since Miriam Makeba. I’ve done amazingly well at home, so now it’s time for me to spread my wings and see how far I can go. I will be filming a new music video for “Feel Good” which will be the first single introduced to the US and doing a 45 venue tour in the US this Fall. I would also love to do an African tour... I have my heart set on it!

What is on the cards for you in 2012? I’m releasing my debut American album Rise Again this summer 2012. I also recently filmed a new live concert DVD hitting Africa around the same time. It’s titled Lira: The Captured Tour and was filmed during my sold out 2011 Captured Tour in South Africa. In May 2012, I make my cinematic debut as the support lead in the Antonio Falduto directed drama, The Italian Consul. The film premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy

Kelly Rowland Kelly Rowland looks simple yet elegant. Her sleek straight hair is a wig styled smooth with maximum shine. A bit of pomade applied to the ends of the hair would help control static and fly away pieces. The strong geometric cut and front fringe brings attention to her exquisite eyes. The rich chocolate brown hair colour looks great with her golden brown skin tone. The sparkle of her fitted sequence bodice plays beautifully with the shine of her hair to create a glamorous finish.
