New Design Talent
Sp tted curated by
Charlotte Abrahams Following the success of Spotted & Spotted Plus by Charlotte Abrahams, we are delighted to announce that this exciting showcase is set to return – in an expanded format, for January 2013. Spotted is designed to create an entry point for a whole new generation of exhibitors and this year’s show will feature 10 hand-picked designers who have never before been seen at a major UK trade fair.
‘I always enjoy putting together the Spotted and Spotted + showcases but this one has been especially exciting. As always, the emerging design businesses showing at Spotted and Spotted + are all producing high quality, original, contemporary products, but this January’s 16-strong line-up has also added a large dose of wit and sophistication – ingredients which guarantee that this will be the best showcase yet’. Charlotte Abrahams.
One Must Dash SP1 One Must Dash seek to share humour with their customers. Their ambition is to produce decorative things that make you happy. Their prints definitely make us happy, and would most definitely bring happiness to your store.
Amy Allwright SP3 Amy designs screen printed textiles and makes homeware products, by hand, from her home in Loughborough. These lovely little phone covers are the perfect gift for someone and, what we believe to be, a necessary accessory for your phone!
Tamasyn Gambell SPP5
Sarah Ray SPP6 Sarah Ray’s illustrations are little rays of sunshine! Inspired by her childhood in the Herefordshire countryshire, every card guarantees lots of laughter.
Tamasyn believes in high quality, timeless design using the most eco friendly methods available. The company has invested a lot of time finding suppliers who provide eco friendly products of the highest quality. Their notebook ranges are made in Britain, use papers from a one hundred year old British paper mill, and are bound by small bookbinders from the South of England.
Claire Gaudion SP2 Claire brings her new collection of printed scarves and notebooks to Spotted. Her handwoven pieces are inspired by the colours and forms of the Guernsey coastline and seascapes. Her new textile print collection uses her Guernsey Handwoven Collection as inspiration, to recreate the layering of her hand woven colours and weave structures into geometric patterned silk scarves and notebooks. These are truly beautiful pieces. 4
Fracas Studios SPP1
Jessica Hayes-Gill SP5
Each card is unique, handmade, and one of a kind. All the postage stamps are 100% authentic-some were taken off posted letters and others were never used. The cassette tapes, puzzle pieces, vintage keys, and abandoned board game pieces are all found objects from various locations around the world.
Jessica’s designs are clean & crisp line drawings that interweave through fixtures and fittings, creating a narrative from room to room. They follow a journey from eye to hand, hand to stencil, stencil to fabric and fabric to home, offering a charming and timeless item.
Spotted Plus is hosted within Spotted, welcoming back to the show 6 designer-makers who have exhibited at Spotted in the past. These exhibitors are only allowed to exhibit in Spotted Plus once, so don’t miss your chance to snap up the latest designs from these ex-Spotted stars! Clementine & Bloom SP10 Don’t miss these unique hand-made luxury designs by the mother and daughter duo, who introduced their range of designs to the market this year! Their use of exquisite colours, bold prints and textures are apparent throughout their ranges.
Many of the exhibitors who were seen first in Spotted can now be seen in places like the Southbank Centre, Selfridges, Harrods and even in Vogue Magazine!
Stephanie Davies SP6
Stormy Knight SP8
Stephanie specialises in laser cutting and engraving and creates beautiful and universal designs that appeal to a wide audience. Never seen before at a trade show, Stephanie will be showcasing her ranges within Spotted, only at Top Drawer this January.
If you’re looking for something more exciting than the average High street card, then look no further! All Stormy Knight cards and gifts are lovingly designed and hand-printed by Sarah Knight from her studio in Bristol. Her cards are printed onto 100% recycled card and are packaged into biodegradable bags.
Spann & Willis SP7
MES Leather SP4
Spann & Willis was born out of a lifelong passion for typography, illustration, stationery and all things hand-printed. They love the slight imperfections and happy accidents the art of screen and block printing so often brings.
Mes is a leather artisan studio based in London. Dissatisfied with the masses of products being propelled by disposable society, they decided to make products by hand that would work in opposition; that is, to last. Their aim is not so much as to bring something new, but to revive something old that works. 13–15 January 2013 Earls Court One, London

Eco & GB As the focus on sustainable production and local buying increases, we’re pleased to be encouraging our retailers to buy green and buy British with our Eco and Product GB trails at Top Drawer this January.
Where once we knew we “should” be making sustainable choices, now we are “actively seeking” the eco options.
Oliver Heath TV Presenter and Eco Champion
David Nicholls Design writer for The Telegraph Magazine
Research shows we are now living in our homes for 17 years rather than 7. Energy bills have gone up by between 15 and 20% over the last year. We are choosing cars based on MPG rather than 0 to 60 MPH. We are obsessed with fresh food and healthy eating. We are entranced by the hand made, and the ingenuity of the re-made.
choosing to find ways to live better – demanding quality, durability, and re-use, reducing toxins and looking to save energy – in short the essential qualities of good sustainable design.
In essence - we are all
There are plenty of products out there to help us live better but the best eco products are those that combine a good provenance, functionality with style– appealing to our practical sides through increased efficiency and to our emotional side with style and stunning good looks.
I’ve been involved with the Product GB trail for 3 years now and if anything I’m more passionate than ever about British design and manufacture. As I write this, I’m wading through some of the applications of exhibitors who want to have the Product GB decal on their stand at Top Drawer in January. One of the questions we ask applicants is whether they promote the fact that their products are British made – whether it be through advertising, marketing or on their website. Almost every single one of them does.
And that’s because they are proud to be making the most of British skills and to be contributing to the British industry. Some have their own workshops where they produce items by hand. Others go out of their way to support British skills and British industry. For example, one of the stationery exhibitors prints its cards in Bristol, sources Yorkshire made envelopes and wraps them up in packaging from Nottingham. It’s not doing that because of any sense of patriotism. Who can afford to run a business on that alone
It is exactly these qualities that I am promoting in this year’s Top Drawer Eco Trail – better products that will appeal to the moral, ethical and social beliefs of your customers - beliefs that they are already buying into in all other areas of their lives. So get on the Eco Trail at this year’s Top Drawer and find the best of what good design has to offer.
Oliver Heath’s Eco-Trail As the pressures of maintaining a healthy carbon footprint are ever prominent, Top Drawer is once again delighted to be supporting the ever-popular Eco Trail. TV presenter and environmental champion Oliver Heath will return to Top Drawer 2012 to lend his support to our accredited Eco-Trail. He comments “Knowing how a product was made, by whom and under what conditions brings us closer to a product through narrative.
Understanding how we will use it, how it fits into our lives and even how we can dispose of it allows us to choose products that fit into our moral and practical beliefs.
The Eco Trail at Top Drawer edits this search for you helping you to find cutting edge products and retailers that believe, like your customers, that there are better ways of doing things, ways that are really worth telling the world about. Follow my Eco Trail to find the products that are making a positive difference today.”
Esme Winter - SPP3
these days? Rather, it’s because the products and services they are finding in this country are of the right quality and price for them. What’s even more heartening is that the number of applicants is increasing each year. Best in British Design
What makes Product GB more relevant than ever? Product GB is an initiative which champions the national economy and locally-made products. With the effects of the downturn still prevalent in some areas of trade in the UK, buying British ensures our local economy is given the best possible chance to flourish. Product GB gives exhibitors a chance to showcase their products that are made using materials sourced from the UK, and are designed and produced locally. We are delighted to once again be working alongside David Nicholls, Design Editor from The Telegraph Magazine who heads up the GB trail. By David Nicholls Design Editor, The Telegraph Magazine

Editors’ Picks We asked some of the editors and curators we work with at Top Drawer to highlight one of their favourite brands taking part in the show this January. Here’s who they chose...
Oliver Heath, environmental champion and TV presenter chooses LadyBug Home Textiles. “Ive been lucky enough to own and use LadyBug textiles towels over the last few years. For me they offer that wonderful combination of being an affordable everyday luxury that are hardwearing enough to withstand family life, but with the peace of mind that their high level of ethical provenance suit my environmental conscience too.” LadyBug Home Textiles V9
Charlotte Abrahams, design and fashion writer, chooses Tamasyn Gambell. ‘I love everything about Tamasyn Gambell’s work, from her bold, geometric prints to the fact that the paper for her notebooks is made in a century-old British paper mill. Gambell is a star in the making.’
Tamasyn Gambell SPP5
David Nicholls, Design editor for The Telegragh, chooses Lazzaro Art. In this digital age where we are firing off emails, tweets and text messages, I find myself increasingly, perhaps nostalgically drawn to more traditional forms of getting in touch. And, for me, at Top Drawer that means spending much time cooing over the stationery companies. Two of my favourites are Lazzaro Art who make pretty floral note cards - and The Green Gables, whose illustrations have a delightful and naive feel. Lazzaro Art G18
In addition to those who work closely with us as editors of the show, year on year Top Drawer attracts the attention of the editors from leading consumer and trade publications including...

It’s a London thing London, the design capital of the world. We think you’d all agree that London is one of the most exciting, diverse and vibrant cities in the world. With over 40,000 shops, boutiques and markets, London has firmly established itself as the keystone in fashion, design and emerging trends all over the world. From Camden to Shoreditch to Knightsbridge, no other city offers the exciting eclectic retail mix found at the heart of our great nation. The Top Drawer Team have shared their favourite places where they find design inspiration and their favourite place to be in and around the city.
Raj Gill, Show Director Design Inspiration: Shoreditch
Commerciality has crept through the hub of London’s young creative scene; But there are still plenty of trendsetting independent boutiques and vintage stores representing this market, there are now more mid-market brands, restaurants, bars and niche interiors stores that are fab retail hunting grounds.
Top Spot: Dover Street Market
Dover Street Market is a multi-level fashion retail store created by Rei Kawakubo of Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons. It is arguably London’s number one cutting-edge shopping destination, with six floors dedicated to fashion, design and art. The retail mix is “avant-garde”, “groundbreaking” and “edgy” and it has established itself as a global trend setter that’s stood the test of time. A real inspiration.
Sian Denny, Marketing Executive
Design Inspiration: The V&A Museum The V&A is recognised and respected as one of the world’s greatest museums for art and design. Every time I’ve visited this magical building I’ve felt enriched, excited and inspired by what I’ve seen and read. There’s a sense of calm and nostalgia about the place which makes you want to visit time and time again. Plus, the gift shop stocks a range of inspiring designs and wonderful jewellery to suit all ages and pockets. Top Spot: Carnaby Street
Carnaby Street is my favourite of all the shopping streets in London. It’s like a whole new world, filled with beautiful unique boutiques, famous fashion brands, and some amazing award winning cafés and bars for when some good old retail respite is needed. It has it all, a must-see when visiting London.
Ed Hubbard, Sales Manager
Design Inspiration: The London Film Museum Sometimes design can be found in the most unusual of places. As an avid fan of films, namely SciFi, I personally find my design inspiration in the London Film Museum. It’s the only museum of its kind in Britain, supporting the film industry and its talent and inspiring film design for the next generation. I’ve even had my photo taken with C3P0 and R2D2! Top Spot: Brixton Village
If you want to be inspired and experience something different, then Brixton Market is the place to go. Clothes, art, food and coffee, it has it all. With an address near “Electric Avenue” how can you not want to visit!
Melissa Spanton, Sales Executive Design Inspiration: Portobello Road
Vintage, antiques, food, fashion - what else do you need to entice you to one of the most famous street markets in the world.
Top Spot: The Southbank Centre
One of the most buzzy, music-filled sites in London with a wide range of restaurants, cafes and shops there is always something new to experience.
26
Michelle Prah, Senior Sales Executive Design Inspiration: Design Museum London
From live graffiti showcases to crystals made out of strobe lighting, this place always has something weird and wonderful on show. The gift shop downstairs also has a great selection of bright and unusual home products that make for great impulse purchases.
Top Spot: Camden
If I make a list of my top places in London, Camden would have to be up there; I love the mixture of record shops, eccentric fashion and stylish boutiques as well as the unusual restaurants and lively bars at night. A favourite place would have to be the Purple Turtle; a bar that has up and coming DJs playing while artists create live art on stage; a great place to wind down with a few drinks after a long day’s shopping.
Colette Warrender, Operations Executive
Design Inspiration: Brick Lane For me to be truly inspired nothing beats being in the city and witnessing incredible things first hand. From the incredible street art and graffiti on almost every corner to the rabbit-warren style alleys leading to vintage markets, galleries and pop up shops. Although I’ve spent hundreds of weekends exploring the place, I seriously doubt I will ever manage to see everything. Constantly evolving, ever inspiring, Brick Lane feeds the senses in every way possible! Top Spot: The Breakfast Club, Spitalfields One should never underestimate the power of brunch! Situated in a back street near to Liverpool Street station, The Breakfast Club is a homage to all things 80’s, serving up arguably the best brunch in the city (apart from their other restaurants in Soho, Hoxton and Islington) all washed down with the most delicious smoothies I’ve ever tasted.
Fran Riddolls, Marketing Manager
Design Inspiration: Harvey Nichols window displays
The window displays in some of London’s leading department stores can be spectacular. Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum and Mason all put on a good show, but in my opinion Harvey Nichols have the edge in the most design-inspiring, cutting edge displays in the capital. A great place for inspiration for your store!
Top Spot: Borough Market Borough Market is a foodies’ heaven. A fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning sampling the huge array of food and drinks, having lunch, or just people watching.
Julie-Anne Scutt, Sales Executive Design Inspiration: Tate Modern
I love the wacky and the wonderful art and photography. It makes me feel like Alice in Wonderland, entering into a whole new world of discovery and excitement every
time I go.
Top Spot: High Street Kensington I love this street because I can do all my favourite activities: shop till you drop, eat fabulous food, drink fancy cocktails and then hit the dance floor. All in a day’s work!
Tiffany Hamilton-Atkins, Operations Manager Design Inspiration: Saatchi Gallery
As soon as I set foot into the bright, clean, white spaces, I instantly feel excited about what I am about to see. Wonderful curation ensures that whenever I visit I see something new which challenges my ideas of design, art or photography. From the Chanel Little Black Jacket fashion exhibition to the upcoming Richard Wilson architectural installation, you can find inspiration in all of its forms
Top Spot: Columbia Road Head East and take a stroll down the famous Columbia Road Flower Market. It’s a perfect place to while away a lazy Sunday morning. Between the bustling crowds and beautiful flowers it’s a veritable feast for the senses. My favourite part is listening to the stall holders - Cockney accents at their best!
