Wellbeing - Beauty Lab Beauty Lab is a slick, clinical story taking inspiration from the extremes of the beauty industry, where medical procedures and a highly scientific approach to beauty are becoming commonplace. Soft powdery pastels are set against a backdrop of clean white and marshmallow pink with neon flecks flashing through for a truly modern look. Watch out for soft matte finish pastel shades like peppermint and palest pink across candles, incense sticks and bath products. You'll see this trend reflected in beauty products and packaging at the show.

Fashion Accessories Faded Grandeur The current economic climate is reflected in this dark, brooding story that imitates a sense of faded grandeur, where once precious metals and jewels are tarnished and faded. Rose gold, gilt and copper tones are important for jewellery, and motifs for pendants include trailing leafy botanicals, bugs and butterflies. Blackened and galvanised metals add to the drama. This is just one of four fashion trends which will be available at Top Drawer.

Buying British Buying Green Top Drawer is proud to support buying British and buying Green with the ever-popular Product GB & Eco Trails this January.
P
roduct GB is an initiative which champions the national economy and locally-made products. With the effects of the downturn still prevalent in some areas of trade in the UK, buying British ensures our local economy is given the best possible chance to flourish.
Product GB gives exhibitors a chance to showcase their products that are made using materials sourced from the UK, and are designed and produced locally. We are delighted to once again be working alongside David Nicholls, Design Editor from The Telegraph Magazine who heads up the GB trail.
Eco Trail at Top Drawer Oliver Heath TV presenter and environmental champion Oliver Heath will return to Top Drawer 2012 to lend his support to the Trail. He comments, Knowing how a product was made, by whom and under what conditions brings us closer to a product through narrative. Understanding how we will use it, how it fits into our lives and even how we can dispose of it allows us to choose products that fit into our moral and practical beliefs. The Eco Trail at Top Drawer edits this search for you - helping you to find cutting edge products and retailers that believe, like your customers, that there are better ways of doing things, ways that are really worth telling the world about.
Product Focus Oliver Heath Oliver Heath Oliver Heath Design
Product Focus David Nicholls David Nicholls The Telegraph
When I visit Top Drawer I’m there as a journalist - on the look out for new ideas, searching for new designers and keeping an eye on emerging trends. But brilliant products and good quality manufacture aren’t found exclusively in the cutting edge sector of the design world. One of my favourite stands to stop by is that of Creamore Mill, a company which runs a woodturning workshop, practising traditional skills in rural Shropshire. For me, it epitomises what the Product GB Trail is all about. The company was founded by John Buckland 30 years ago when it started out in a tiny outbuilding at his family’s former home. At first he had merely a handful of tools and a wood lathe, but eventually the appetite for his locally made products made from sustainably sourced solid timber meant the business expanded. Products are made on site through a combination of handmade and mechanised woodworking skills. Under one roof, the items are designed, made and dispatched to stockists stretch from Inverness to Cornwall. I look at Creamore Mill as a great example of a company that has worked hard over three decades to successfully maintain its British production base. Find Creamore Mill on Stand P78.
Kate Hamilton Hunter's work typifies all that is great about the Top Drawer Eco Trail – innovative, ingenious and unique. Kate collects materials vintage biscuit and confectionary tins and upcycles them from what some would call waste, into charming one off pieces of bespoke jewellery. It is precisely this designer vision that makes the best sustainable products not just as good as their competitors but places them in a league of their own. With a sweet back story (excuse the pun) and a minimal environmental footprint, isn’t this how every product show be considered? Find Kate’s jewellery and a whole host of wonderful products made with real vision on my Top Drawer Eco Trail. See Kate and her fabulous new ranges in Design Collections, Stand UDC16

potted' - created by freelance style and design writer, Charlotte Abrahams - is designed to create an entry point for a whole new generation of exhibitors and so far we have launched 22 new design-based businesses onto the UK trade fair market. This season 12 more innovative design companies, who have never been seen at a major UK trade fair before, will be taking part in 'Spotted', while we are also bringing back six of the best businesses from the Autumn show under the banner of 'Spotted Plus.'
‘Everyone featured within the Spotted area is chosen for the quality and originality of the things they make,’ Charlotte says. ‘There’s such a wealth of talent out there but many small companies and individual designer-makers simply can’t afford to break into the trade fair market. By removing these financial obstacles, Clarion Events is giving these exciting businesses the opportunity to introduce their work to an international audience – and giving that audience yet another reason not to miss Top Drawer Spring.’

It’s a London Thing Home to some of the world’s leading retailers and greatest designers, London is the hub of all things retail, a capital bursting with creativity and design, and unbeatable shopping! But it’s not just the top department stores showcasing the latest trends and fashions; there’s a wealth of style, design and talent hidden away in London’s markets and villages where you’ll find retail vitality and independent stores with individual style.
K
atie Law, Design News Writer for The London Evening Standard reveals her her ‘top-shops’ and hidden gems. My favourite shops tend to be original and quirky, whether they are small independents or larger stores; what they have in common is an eye for display. Top of the list for both product and display is Shoreditch-based Labour and Wait, which brilliantly promotes itself as a purveyor of old-fashioned, high quality products, from galvanised buckets and enamel saucepans to Guernsey jumpers, all displayed unfussily, with brown paper price tags. Another shop with heaps of idiosyncratic style is Selvedge Drygoods, set up by by Selvedge Magazine editor Polly Leonard, who is often to be found serving behind the till. The shop sells unusual linens, woollens, buttons and clothing you won't find elsewhere. Ben Pentreath is an architectural designer with an original eye who has filled his small shop off Lamb's Conduit Street with curiosities including old coral, coloured resin candlesticks, classical plaster moulds, stationery and decoupage paperweights. He mixes in the odd bit of vintage and stages occasional exhibitions. I'm a big fan of Rice, the ethical Danish brand, which has opened its first standalone store in Covent Garden and a visit to Anthropologie offers an exemplary lesson to

The importance of online retailing Warren Knight, Co-Founder and Director, Gloople
F
or businesses to survive, they must adapt. For retailers in the 21st century, adaptation means tapping into the phenomenal potential of e-commerce. E-commerce is a global success story, increasing 25% to £480bn in 2010. Leading the way in Europe is the UK, where our per capita spend of £1141 is the highest in the world. Every year, 37million people shop online, supporting over 730,000 jobs and shipping over one billion parcels across the country. The world of e-commerce is not just a world of sales – it’s one of sharing. Social networking means 38% of 16-34 year olds, 25% of 35-54s, and 13% of over 55s share information about purchases every week. With the UK e-commerce market is defying the recession to grow at 16% per year, it’s no longer an option to opt out. To hear more about Online Retailing and how to adapt to the ecommerce trend, visit Warren’s seminar at Top Drawer this January.
To engage with your market, hear what they’re saying and measure your impact, you need to be where they are – online.
