GEARING UP FOR THE M.E.N EXPO First of all, M.E.N would like to wish all of our readers a Happy New year. Hopefully 2011 will bring renewed enthusiasm and an increase in customer spending on mobile electronics, and by this time next year we’ll be talking about how good 2011 was. Interestingly 2011 is in the Chinese year of the rabbit, cautious little creatures that dart for cover the moment they sense trouble. Ironically, this could be exactly the opposite tact that dealers in this market will need to be taking over the next twelve months, getting themselves, their businesses and their services out in front of the public at every opportunity, even if that takes them out of their comfort zones. New things need to be tried in 2011 because, as you may have heard from a certain figure in this industry, if you do the same thing today as you did yesterday, how can you expect there to be a different outcome tomorrow?

Last month you may have also read the piece from M.E.N’s publisher, Charlotte Body, talking about the importance to the industry of the upcoming M.E.N Expo. This is exactly the type of thing that can take dealers out of their comfort zone, but reveal numerous benefits. With it’s reversion to a trade-only format, the two day event on the 15th and 16th March at Coventry’s impressive Ricoh Arena is an event that dealers should really take the chance to visit. Already a large number of exhibitors have booked their spaces, planning on unveiling new products, rekindling relations with dealers and offering show deals. As Charlotte pointed out last month, this is one of the few opportunities that dealers get to see such a number of their suppliers under one roof and there are obvious benefits. You may struggle with taking a day out of the shop, but perhaps you should consider how much more valuable this one day out may be. As an additional bonus for 2011, all dealers are invited to an evening of entertainment on Tuesday 15th March. This “ICE Heroes” evening will have presentations from industry leaders coupled to free curry and drink, all of which will be followed by a show girl presentation. In effect this is a celebration of those who have survived the recent tough economical state and a chance to look forward to the rest of 2011 with renewed vigour. Even if you can’t make the daytime event, this night of entertainment is something you really shouldn’t miss. M.E.N will give updates on the exhibitors, the ICE Heroes evening and other developments for the M.E.N Expo over the next few months, but in the meantime there are plenty of features to give you food for thought. This issue alone looks at the latest entry-level double DIN headunits as well as the most current Bluetooth hands-free car kits, plus reports on a trip to Nokia, the use of social media in business and an up close interview with FOUR’s Chris Woods. So get reading, but mark the M.E.N Expo into your diary before you do!

AT YOUR FINGERTIPS At M.E.N we often like to expose different products that may be of

interest to dealers, and these gloves from FIvEpOINT certainly meet that criteria. FIVEPOINT gloves are a stylish way of keeping hands warm and dry while using iPhones, iPads, iPods and other touch-screen devices. Thanks to their specially-designed conductive fingertips, they do what other gloves don’t: they let users touch, tap and type on touch-screens without having to take them off. The gloves are manufactured in the United Kingdom from lambs wool and are available in three different sizes; small, medium and large. At present, only one colour combination is available; Oxford Blue with Grey fingertips, but more will be added in 2011. The suggested retail price of these is £24.99, and could be a great up-sell in these cold months with customers buying touchscreen electronics. HOLDING SOMETHING YOU SHOULDN’T? For those of you out on the road a bit you may have stopped at one of the ten motorway services and come across Alpine’s “Washroom Service Station” advert promotion. If you’ve seen it you’ll remember it, promoting their CDE113BT head unit and the benefits of the built-in Bluetooth hands-free. This is the sort of thing that increases awareness and also the type of promotion that led to Alpine UK winning the “Best Marketing Performance” at Alpine’s European Marketing Conference in Bratislava (Slovakia), beating all the other European Alpine companies. They’re keen to continue this success and suggest

that if dealers have marketing initiatives that Alpine should do to raise awareness and help you to sell, then contact your Area Sales Managers and they’ll see what they can do. Never ones to miss a trick, Alpine also want to remind dealers about their Recommended Systems. There are five of these systems that sell from £249 to £499, all of which offer great value and well-matched components to give the best possible sound, features and benefits. Selling a complete matched system offers added value and a great deal for customers,

and should give dealers extra opportunities to profit from installation too. Contact: Alpine Electronics, 0845 3131650 or alpine-electronics.co.uk

NEW EXS SUBS FROM BRAVOX

Bravox, the audio brand from Brazil, have unveiled their new EXS range of subwoofers, available in the Uk through Hexen AD. The Bravox EXS range is available in 2 and 4 ohm dual voice coils, with a 400W RMS 10in, 500W RMS 12in and a 600W RMS 15in. The 15in sub is only available on a limited production run though, so customers will have to move fast. Bravox say that this range of subwoofers is ideal for enthusiasts looking for both SQ and SPL, which is quite a selling point. But then, with people like Vance Dickason, speaker guru and author of “The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook” endorsing Bravox’s ranges of speakers, it looks good for this EXS range. The subs feature cast alloy baskets that are powder coated for an expensive look and feel, yet they offer excellent value for money. Usefully, the products offer very healthy profit margins to dealers, so give Hexen AD a call to find out how you can offer them to your customers. PIONEER “CHAMPION” THE BASS CAUSE pioneer GB has been busy this month, also introducing its new line-up of pioneer Champion Series car subwoofers. These combine high power output, clean punchy bass and a sharp new cosmetic design. Being the ‘Champion Series’, these new subs use technologies derived from pioneer’s world record-breaking SpL and Competition-grade models and have been designed and built with the same winning mentality. New models include the 30 cm TS-W309, TS-W309S4, TS-W309D4 and the 25 cm TS-W259S4 and TS-W259D4. “Due to space limitations, low bass is frequently missing in most car audio systems” said Tom Van Biervliet, Manager Product Planning Car Audio, Pioneer Europe. “However, with our new and improved Champion Series subwoofers we’ve made significant strides in subwoofer development to offer consumers various ways to fill this bass frequency void.” Budget conscious customers

looking to add powerful bass to their drive will appreciate the full and robust sound these new Champion Series subwoofers produce. Each new model features a seamless composite IMPP woofer cone that has been enlarged by 14 percent to generate greater air movement. Together with an improved magnet structure, air vents in the basket under the spider and holes in the aluminium former, that both work to reduce the mechanical resistance, this combination of innovations results in a smooth response and clean, solid bass sound. The subwoofers’ surround is constructed of a sophisticated dual-layer elastic polymer that is much lighter than rubber. This decreases the weight of the moving parts to improve control and speed, whilst guaranteeing high durability. This new series is available in January 2011, so for more information contact Pioneer. ORIGIN

Be in the know with

Pogo

Since the very beginning of GpS speed camera warning systems Origin Technologies Ltd, the company behind the pogo brand, has been at the cutting edge. In fact, it’s fair to say that when it comes to the fully featured GpS speed camera warning systems market they actually re-invented the category. While other companies were keeping with the airwave detectors that had been around since the 1970s and were plagued by false alarms and limited range warnings, Origin’s founder Tim Rock believed there was the need for a more accurate way of detecting the increasing number of speed cameras on the Uk’s roads. His answer was the Origin blue i unit, something that he started developing in 1999 before launching at the Scottish Motor Show in November 2001. The Origin blue i incorporated a number of unique features that the company had patented the intellectual property on across numerous countries in Europe and beyond, and it helped establish Origin Technologies Ltd as one of the global innovators in GpS speed camera warnings. Two years later the Origin b2 was released, a stateof-the-art “Driver Safety and Information System” that built on the success of the first unit and has gone on to have tens of thousands of users. Despite being almost 8 years old now, the Origin b2 remains popular, with many loyal owners keeping their units updated and their licences clean as a result.

How the pogo Alert+, from the pioneers in GpS speed camera warning systems, can keep your customers informed of the dangers ahead while delivering good margins to your business. Then in 2007, after market research amongst both users of the Origin units and non-users, the company changed its brand name to pogo, the thinking behind it being that it was a more memorable and confident-sounding name. This coincided with the launch of a new product too, the pogo Alert. Once again, pogo had pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved with a GpS speed camera warning system and it received widespread acclaim and picked up a number of awards, including M.E.N Gold Awards two years in a row. But with new developments in technology and the desire to continue leading the way in the market, 2010 saw them launch their latest product, which is their best to date. As a company, what they’re best at is innovation, producing quality products and giving customers market-leading solutions when is comes to speed camera detection; all these things are encompassed by their latest Pogo Alert+. This tiny unit employs a stunning full colour, OLED touchscreen (which is the latest display technology) with custom designed icons and benefits from the numerous unique Pogo features and vastly comprehensive database of speed camera locations. “We’re on our fourth generation product with this,” explains Tim, “and nobody does it better than us. It’s a high-end product, certainly higher than most Sat Navs in terms of it’s speed camera warning abilities; the market for speed camera warning systems is still a niche, albeit a niche market that is continuing to grow, with the Pogo Alert+ at the pinnacle of this market”. He goes on to talk about the benefits of their latest system, not only from the very real one of protecting the driver and their licence, but also the fact that using the system can make for a much more relaxing journey. While drivers without such a system may find themselves constantly monitoring the road ahead for hazards and cameras, the Pogo Alert+ takes care of that job for them and he claims this peace of mind shouldn’t

|2011

be under-estimated. In fact, Tim goes on to say that driving organisations like the AA have said there’s a need for drivers to concentrate on the road ahead and other road users rather than nervously looking around all the time for speed traps. The Pogo Alert+ is that extra pair of eyes! Since its launch in September 2010, the Pogo Alert+ has seen excellent sales, and its advancements have cemented Pogo’s position as a market-leader in this field. It’s a unique product and one that dealers can benefit from in a

number of ways. Customers may feel that the speed camera alerts on their Sat Nav systems are all they need (in fact, Pogo license their database and patent protected intellectual property out to some manufacturers) and Tim admits that some do a decent job. But like anything, a dedicated system can offer a greater ability at doing the job it’s intended to, a master of it’s trade rather than a jack of all trades, as it were. For people serious about keeping safe, knowing where road hazards are and holding onto their licences, then a unit like the Pogo Alert+ is the ultimate answer.

WHy THE pOGO ALERT+

There’s no doubt about it; despite well-publicised reports of speed cameras being removed, the number is actually increasing. With around 6,000 in place across the Uk already, there are even plans to start using average speed cameras (SpECS) ECS) in some urban areas as a replacement for speed bumps. These average speed cameras in particular are becoming more commonplace and for many drivers they pose a real concern. It’s all too easy to have a slip in concentration and find yourself driving at unlawful speeds, which can lead to unwelcome points and possibly even a driving ban and the devastating impact that can have on a person’s life. For many drivers, their ability to drive is crucial to their ability to carry out their work, so investing in something that will help to keep them and their licences safe makes perfect sense. The Pogo Alert+ is the ideal solution. With it’s cutting-edge and compact design the unit uses the award-winning Origin360 safety camera database and provides comprehensive audible and visual alerts including safety camera type, speed limit and proximity to hazard. It can warn of every type of speed camera and will display the vehicle’s average speed through SPECS average speed camera zones, which is a particularly popular function nowadays. There are even patent protected features within the unique PogoSoft operating system, including things like directional warnings so it won’t alert you to cameras on the other side of the road, plus useful warnings such as the time sensitive school zone one. Another useful feature is the inclusion of a highly sensitive infra-red laser detector to provide the fullest protection against mobile laser-based speed traps and “safety camera vans”. This is also removable should the driver drive abroad to a country where they are not legal. There’s certainly no other unit out there quite like the Pogo Alert+ and it looks set to be their most successful speed camera warning device yet.

BENEFITS FOR DEALERS

One of the key selling points for the pogo ogo Alert+, aside from the functionality, is the compact size of the unit. For many drivers, they don’t want big, bulky screens attached to their windscreen or dashboard, so the pogo item should suit them nicely. Especially on high-performance sports cars, where windscreen space can be limited, the pogo Alert+ can provide a very discreet solution. The product comes with a windscreen mount and a dashtop mount but a mount for the front of the dash is also available. On top of this, the pogo ogo Alert+ can be sold as a true plug and play solution, especially as it can be powered by batteries (giving around 8 hours of continuous use), or installers can easily hardwire it to the vehicle’s battery. This is a simple process that should take around half an hour to do a really good job of (hiding the cables nicely etc), meaning an additional way to make more profit on a product already boasting healthy margins. For the first time too, the pogo Alert+ can be updated via Windows or Mac, the Mac updates being yet another industry first and a way to reach even more customers. Add to that the fact that Pogo are proven masters of the GPS speed camera warning systems, who offer technical support, product reliability, quick delivery and a constantly updated database of camera locations (in fact, their survey team have visited every speed camera location on their database!) and it’s no wonder Pogo is the first choice for many. Furthermore, they are the only speed camera warning systems approved by Ford, Vauxhall and Renault, which is no mean feat!

As a company, what they’re best at is innovation, producing quality products and giving customers market-leading solutions when is comes to speed camera detection

NUMBER7: SOCIAL MEDIA

oPPoRtunity

knocks

At the height of the car audio boom, when CD players were in demand, dealers didn’t have to work quite as hard to attract customers. Nowadays it’s a different scenario with many trusting in word of mouth to keep their businesses ticking over. But while the market has shrunk, the number of ways to reach customers has grown massively. Back then word of mouth was often enough to keep the business positively booming, perhaps backed up by an advert in a local paper or national magazine and the occasional flyer or poster campaign. Building a demo car could also get your shop extra publicity, but all of those things took time…and often a lot of money too. Fastforward to 2011 and the online revolution has well and truly happened, with a world of possibilities for companies. You will have read features before about using the internet to the advantage of your business, and social media websites in particular, but what really is the deal with this potential opportunity. Can you, in real practical terms, turn these fun and frivolous social media websites into useful and profitable portals for your business? Take Facebook as an example, a website that boasts over 500 million active users worldwide. That’s a lot of people networking! While it’s not likely you’ll ever even scratch the surface of that number, even the tiniest indent can reap rewards. So, how do you do it?

Facebook offers you a huge amount of direct contact with active users without it costing you anything…just a little bit of time In the example of Facebook there are three main ways you can use it, with a Facebook Profile, Facebook Group or Facebook Fan Page. Setting up a Facebook Profile is the easy first step, allowing your company to have a presence on the site and to invite friends to join. You can then update statuses and images that they can all see, which is a great way of just keeping them up-to-date. A Facebook Group for your business is the next move in opening the scope a little wider, allowing you to send bulk invites (like to

16

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

an open day, or to a sale item) out to members, who in turn can send them to their friends thereby creating huge viral potential. There are a limit to the number of people you can have in a group though, which is when having a Facebook Fan Page can come in useful. These pages are open to anyone, not just those who are registered, meaning the whole world can see them, opening up your business to even more potential customers, with the ability to see how many impressions you get too. You can message to all members via updates too, which is a great way to promote special offers and the like. Essentially it’s like a mini-website for your company with minimal stress, but the potential to reach maximum people through the Facebook network. Outside of these, you can also advertise on Facebook if you want to, being able to target specific types of customers (i.e males in 18-30 category who are registered in your local area). There are different ways to pay for this, but it could be an interesting experiment to see if that works for you as well. With the free areas though, Facebook offers you a huge amount of direct contact with active users without it costing you anything… just a little bit of time. Making money from it can be as simple as updating your Fan Page status with the latest deal from your shop, something that will appear on all of your fan’s news feeds. They’re likely to look at their news feed regularly…they’re not likely to look at you

the online revolution has well and truly happened, with a world of possibilities for companies. website for deals so often, so you can see the power of this. Ideally you’ll need to add extra interest, rather than being like a boring advert which they may soon get tired of. Adding test results from magazines on the speakers you’re doing a deal on, reviews of the latest portable navigation device, or linking a video to a sub box in action with details of your prices, are all the types of things that could garner interest. The key is to not over use it for direct selling, but to try and get people involved, posting on your wall and putting interesting pictures up, all to help keep your company in the minds of customers and being part of their community, rather than an annoying impersonal salesperson. When you do post about a product for sale (which may be to try and move some old stock perhaps), the good thing is you know the people who will see it are generally interested in what you do, so it is a more focused kind of advertising than most other outlets. All it really takes is some thought and some time. It clearly works as large companies now employ specialists who are dedicated to promoting their brand on-line via these types of social media sites. If you think of a large company like VW, rather than relying on people reading reviews or looking at pictures in magazines of their newest model, they can show people who have an interest in the brand videos and pictures straight away on-line. In other words, they can get their message across quicker, easier and in a more focused way, while not directly selling. Ultimately though that breeds awareness of what they do, which can have an impact when those social media users are contemplating a purchase. It can work for you too so long as you’re prepared to put in the time and believe in this new type of media, after all, it’s here to stay so if you don’t try and make a go of it you could find yourself falling behind the competition.

pRODUCT GUIDE

entRy LeveL DouBLe Din heAD units M.E.N looks at the double DIN head units that fall under the £250 mark

guiDe

PRoDuct focus:

There was a time when finding a decent single DIN head unit for under £250 was a tough shout. Nowadays though, whether audiophiles like it or not, there’s a desire amongst consumers for ever-cheaper options and a decent single DIN head unit can be picked up for much less. It’s also now possible to find a double DIN head unit within that price bracket, even though the suggested retail prices may have been originally higher. There’s a debate raging at the moment amongst the industry, which was highlighted by some when putting this guide together (although not specific to the products in this guide), the question of whether it’s detrimental to the market for products to be sold too cheaply, and, if so, whose fault is it? Should dealers who constantly knock down prices in a bid to win the sale be to blame, or should the manufacturers/distributors who let it happen be the ones held up for scrutiny. It’s a perennial debate, and there’s certainly no easy answer, but if you have views then feel free to contact M.E.N (andy.mills@ creativemedialtd.co.uk) and let them be known. Back to this guide though, and here are some great double DIN head units that come in at under the £250 mark, that clearly offer great value for money and are sure to create happy customers. Some even offer great potential for dealers to up-sell on items such as Bluetooth modules or steering wheel remotes, which is great news for dealers wanting to maximise their profits.

ALpINE

The suggested retail price of Alpine’s CDEW203Ri unit only just scrapes into this price point at £249.99. It’s a head unit made with iPods and iPhones in mind, with full speed connection to both via the included Full Speed Connection cable. It offers CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, AAC and WMA playback and comes with both a front Aux-in and front USB port. With a built-in 4x50W amp, a stylish white LCD display and blue illumination, the Alpine unit is an excellent way into quality double DIN aural and visual pleasure. What’s even better is that the unit can be built upon as it is steering wheel remote control ready, KTP-445 Power Pack ready and Parrot Bluetooth ready with the KCE-400BT unit. That makes for a great basis upon which dealers and installers can up-sell.

CLARION

Released in 2009, Clarion’s CX609E falls into the entrylevel price point for double DIN head units. It’s styled in an OE way, meaning it shouldn’t look out of place in any dashboard. Two of the key selling points of this unit are that it offers iPod direct control via the USB port and also comes with a built-in Bluetooth hands-free phone kit with external microphone (the Bluetooth can also be used for A2DP streaming). There’s still a CD drive too, capable of playing CD-R and CD-RW discs, and the unit can also play MP3, WMA and AAC files. On top of all of this another nice touch is the 728 variable colour combinations available of keys and display, something that should see this unit look even more at home in any dashboard.

JvC

JVC offers three double DIN head units that are widely available to end users under the £250 point; the KW-XR411, KW-XR611 and the KW-XR811. The KW-XR411 is the cheapest option, boasting a CD receiver and equipped with a USB port. It’s a more basic specification, but looks great and should be a useful solution for dealers. The KW-XR611 is fully-featured and offers a two-way controller for iPod/iPhone via the front panel mounted USB port. There’s also a front panel mounted AUX-in which allows for multiple digital or analogue sources to be used. Meanwhile, the smart OEM-style KW-XR811 double DIN head unit is equipped to match the needs of the high-tech, modern day driver. Featuring Bluetooth Wireless Technology, dual USB ports, a front panel AUX-in and separated variable colour, which allows users to set different colours for the display and key set, in order to match the interior illumination of the vehicle (a function the KW-XR611 also has). All three units include an RDS FM tuner and a MP3/WMA compatible CD player with a 24-bit DAC to ensure faithful music reproduction (the KW-XR811 using a Tl/Burr Brown 24-bit DAC).

COBRA

|2011

The PeRfect fect Pairing NSV from Cobra provides the ultimate in OEM - look Bluetooth hands-free systems, giving dealers a whole new sales pitch.

W

hile there are many options for dealers when it comes to supplying Bluetooth hands-free car kits, it’s rare to find any that integrate so neatly with the vehicle’s dashboard as those by NSv from Cobra. NSv is a leading OE supplier of Bluetooth technology and as such the quality of their products is impeccable, with an attention to detail and incredible simplicity that sets them apart from the competition. But what really sells their aftermarket Bluetooth hands-free systems is the design, with switches built to integrate perfectly into a vehicle and achieve a factory fitted appearance. Over 150 vehicle applications are catered for, meaning the switch controls come in a large variety of shapes and sizes to fill the blank switch panels in a massive selection of vehicles. Each one is specifically designed to complement the car’s factory interior with the control to be installed in unobtrusive, OEM-type positions. From this users can touch a single button to answer calls, disconnect calls, use voice dialling, redial last number, adjust the volume, reject calls, transfer to headset for private calls, disable the Bluetooth connection and erase the pairing memory. On top of all of this, some models have two additional buttons that allow for next and previous track selection when listening to music via the A2DP streaming or to turn the volume up or down. Added to this original equipment appearance and single/triple switch control, NSV kits also sound great thanks to their hook-up to the car’s speakers. They also offer outstanding voice clarity with a directional microphone, digital signal processing, echo cancellation and noise reduction. When using these systems, the car will mute the sound system automatically when calls are coming in, and for added safety they support

20

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

the voice dialling mentioned earlier so drivers can stay totally focused on the road ahead. The systems automatically link to the user’s phone once the ignition is turned on and up to five mobile phones can be linked to it. On the installation side of things, NSV systems can be integrated with Plug & Play ISO or vehicle-specific harnesses, so they shouldn’t pose installers any issues. In the box dealers will find the specific control switch, microphone and BT3 Bluetooth module. NSV also offers a selection of four universal control switches, keeping an OEM style appearance but not designed with any specific vehicle in mind. These four universal switches come in either chrome or black round backlit single button formats or chrome or black rectangular triple button formats, meaning dealers aren’t limited to who they can supply these systems to. For dealers looking for something a little different when it comes to their Bluetooth hands-free offer then an NSV system is the perfect choice. NSV brings an element of subtlety and class into the mix and offers leading Bluetooth technology coupled with high quality audio and great voice clarity. The fact that the system can be installed to be almost unnoticeable on a dashboard should be an appealing selling point to customers, many of whom may feel that this integrated OEM style is something that will add real value to their vehicle. The fact that its functionality and quality is as much of a reason to choose it, and indeed sell it as the looks are, will probably only become apparent when they begin to experience how well it works for themselves. vESTATEC NOW

vestatec has grown massively over the years and now dealers can really benefit

vestatec as a company has been around since 1987, originally as a supplier of German-manufactured bodykits, spoilers and wheels. They then took on the Rosen brand in 1998, but ten years later there were big changes. vestatec sold Rosen and took on the Gentex and Interdynamics brands, before adding Metasystem to their line-up earlier this year. Throughout all of this vestatec has also been a supplier of BBS alloy wheels to car manufacturers and in more recent times has acquired pATH products (a name many of you will recognise from times gone by from car audio, but are more involved with home audio such as IXOS nowadays). While not all of vestatec’s divisions or products are applicable to the mobile electronics retailer, it’s clear that their expansion over the years has put the company in a very good position. Now, they may have grown to accommodate more products, but what they can offer in the mobile electronics trade are significant, and potentially very profitable, offerings including things like the Gentex rear view mirrors with in-built screens. Metasystem in particular have products for the trade that are proving to be continually popular, especially their parking and Thatcham approved security solutions. The latest in those areas are:

ACTIvE pARk 4 This is the latest parking solution from Metasytem, available as a front or rear kit. These include flush mount sensors (which are mounted from behind and give a perfect OE finish) that can be painted to match the body colour and offer easy diagnostics for servicing. The front kit can be activated automatically, from a VSS connection, when the vehicle speed is below 5mph. When installed without VSS connection it activates for 20 seconds at ignition ON, or when the button is pressed, and when reverse gear is selected, the system remains active for 20 seconds to further assist with parking manoeuvres. The rear kit meanwhile uses the same flush fit sensors, but utilises an intelligent system that is programmable to accommodate tow bars, bull bars, bike racks etc, and it can be wired to disconnect when towing too. Both systems come with audible alerts but can also be used with the optional ABP0211 display too.

WIRELESS vEHICLE SECURITy Metasystem offers the HPAT 5.0 WFR or the EasyCAN WFR security systems with wire-free installation for the sirens. Both are Thatcham category 2-1, therefore achieve a Thatcham category 1 status for the vehicle’s security and can be linked with any Meta alarm that’s programmed for an M04 or M05 back-up siren. The latter meanwhile comes with a digital alarm that is programmed to integrate to the vehicle’s CAN Bus or an analogue alarm for vehicles not equipped with a CAN Bus. Naturally these products both carry the same high standard of quality that all Meta security products do, but have that extra help for installers with the lack of wires to the siren. For show cars or discreet installation just about anywhere, these wire-free solutions are excellent. There are also commercial opportunities here as the alarm sensors are also wireless meaning installation into large trucks, mobile homes or even boats is an easier and quicker and therefore more cost effective for installers, who would otherwise have to spend time neatly routing the wires.

AIR CON…IN A CAN! One of vestatec’s companies, Interdynamics Europe, can offer dealers a potentially new revenue stream. The company supplies Air Con in a can, using patented R134a refrigerant technology. The kits can be sold to end users for DIy recharging of their air conditioning system, or there’s the professional range for dealers willing to offer the service. With so many air-conditioned cars on the road nowadays, this is a potentially huge market to get into, and thanks to vestatec it’s also now an easy one to get into! The company isn’t staying put though, with more new launches due in the New Year, including a range of AV products, plus there are plans to enter the telematics arena later on in 2011, in partnership with Octo Telematics. Until then though dealers can continue to benefit from Vestatec’s 23 years of experience, their quality products that are designed for easier installation and their technical back-up. There’s also the benefit of next day delivery on any orders received before 4pm, which is always an additional help. For more information on Vestatec and their offerings to the trade, or for details of becoming a supplier, contact them on the details below. Ck-200 INSTALLER CHALLENGE Nokia invites dealers to see how simple their mid-level Ck-200 Bluetooth kit is to install

It’s a statement in itself that Nokia should invite dealers and installers from across the Uk to experience their Ck-200 for themselves. It clearly shows a huge amount of confidence in their product and a belief that it can offer an up-todate alternative for dealers in that midlevel price point. M.E.N attended their installer morning at Nokia’s Farnborough headquarters to find out just why they’re so pleased with this latest product.

own CK-200 with them, resulting in a quicker ability to get on the road and start making and receiving calls as they don’t have to fuss around uploading contacts etc. For dealers, this clearly has a very strong selling point. There are other reasons why dealers and installers should like these units too. As there is simply the display (with built-in 9mm microphone), wireless remote control and the junction box, the task of installation should be significantly quicker and easier than other Bluetooth car kits. BLAUpUNkT

ALpINE

Alpine may not offer a dedicated Bluetooth hands-free kit but what they do have are fantastic Parrot Bluetooth units that can be linked into their head units. The KCE-250BT has a built-in Bluetooth module and is compatible with a wide range of Bluetooth enabled phones (and is also upgradeable to support future models). It comes with a microphone and offers phonebook download, voice dial, auto answer function and call history. The KCE-400BT has all of this but adds audio streaming via Bluetooth plus that all-important iPod connectivity. Both units are reasonably priced and can offer dealers a good up-sell item for customers who have bough non-Bluetooth hands-free equipped head units. FUNkWERk

The BT Drive Free 111 is Blaupunkt’s offering of a Bluetooth handsfree car kit to the market. The unit comes with an integrated speaker and microphone and offers multi-pairing support to connect to two different mobile phones with an automatic Bluetooth connection. Blaupunkt claim excellent sound quality too, thanks to the DSP solution for noise cancellation and they suggest it’s as useful at home or in the office as it is in a car. The kit comes with a sunvisor mounting clip, car battery charger, USB charging cable and manual and offers 10 hours of talk time and 400 hours of standby time from a single three hour charge. A new entry into the UK’s hands-free market, the Audio 2010 from Funkwerk is an attractive looking piece of kit. Utilising a high-precision OLED display within a stylish housing, installers have three mounting options included in the kit; an adhesive pad, mounting plate and mounting arm. This should help realise a seamless fit into just about any vehicle. The Bluetooth hands-free kit is compatible with all common mobile phones, and can quickly wirelessly connect with upto 10 different phones. It also has the useful feature of being able to pair two mobile phones simultaneously using multi-point technology, which is a major selling point of the product. On top of this there’s intelligent voice control, which is activated via the central button (buzzer), which naturally makes calling on the move more convenient and safer. Sound wise, the Audio 2010 employs DSP echo and noise suppression, provides voice output through the two front speakers and has an integrated mute function. That isn’t all though as this clever product also allows users to read and reply to SMS messages and offers playback of music files from the mobile phone or an MP3 player. In fact, there’s also the possibility of connection to iPod and other compatible devices via the optional iDapter accessory. Funkwerk also believe this product is quick to install meaning there’s pretty much nothing the Audio 2010 can’t do. Contact: Autosound, 01274 688990 or autosound.co.uk

iO

Most dealers will be aware by now of the two hands-free options from iO; the iO PLAY and the iO Visor kit. The PLAY is an innovative Bluetooth music streaming car kit, which allows users to simultaneously make and receive phone calls while streaming music from a second portable device. It’s compatible with MP3 players, mobile phones and can even be used with Sat Nav, allowing for the playback of each through the car stereo simultaneously and wirelessly using the Bluetooth technology. On the phone side, the PLAY stores upto five mobile phones in its memory pairing automatically when the user enters the vehicle and is compatible with all Bluetooth enabled mobile phones. The small control console for the PLAY uses a very thin 4 core wire and is mounted by iO designed fixing pads, making it relatively easy to install just about anywhere inside a car. The iO Visor Kit, on the other hand, is completely wireless. With a built in microphone and speaker, users simply clip it to their visor and are ready to make calls. With noise and echo cancellation features and the ability to pair the kit with a voice dialling equipped phone, users need not touch their phone at all to make a call. Alternatively, the iO Visor’s simple one touch functionality makes answering, redialling, rejecting and ending calls quick, safe and easy for users with phones not equipped with voice dialling. With 6 hours of talk time and 250 hours of standby, plus a ‘text to speech’ function that gives spoken updates during use, the Visor kit is a simple and relatively inexpensive option for customers. pARROT

The latest from Parrot is the MINIKIT Smart, a portable Bluetooth hands-free charging holder for smart phones that builds on the MINIKIT Slim. The MINIKIT Smart basically does three functions; it allows Bluetooth hands-free calling, is a phone holder and is also a charging point for the phone. It offers automatic phonebook synchronisation, advanced automatic voice recognition (tagging up to 2000 contacts for making calls without touching the phone) and reads out phonebook contacts for both incoming and outgoing calls. The unit is compatible with all brands of Bluetooth smart phones, and offers up to 10 hours of talk time and one week of standby time. Usefully, it’s also allows for software updates to aid compatibility with future phones. Considering how many smart phones there are out there, with connected services and navigation apps, this should appeal to a wide market. Naturally, Parrot still have their well-known and trusted fitted Bluetooth hands-free systems; the CK3000 Evolution, CK3100, MKi9000, MKi9100 and MKi9200. The CK models both play through the car’s speakers, have built-in voice recongnition and can be paired to up to five different phones in the case of the CK3100. This model also has automatic synchronisation with phonebooks. Meanwhile, the MK range is for fitted Bluetooth hands-free and music playing solutions. The MKi9000 and MKi9100 can connect to iPod, iPhone, MP3 player, USB memory key or A2DP mobile phone to play music through the car’s speakers. The MKi9200 has all of this but adds SD card playback ability. All of the systems come with a wireless remote control, automatic phonebook synchronisation and advanced automatic voice recognition tagging up to 1500 contacts each! The MKi9100 though also comes with a removable, high-resolution OLED screen, which displays phonebook, caller ID, track details and playlists, while the top-spec MKi9200 employs a removable colour TFT screen to do the same jobs plus display album cover art work. All of these Parrot products also have upgradeable software allowing for increased compatibility with future devices which is good for customers to know. MOTOROLA

In 2010 Motorola launched the TK30 and MOTONAV TN. The five key reasons why the TK30 should be a first option for end users are that it’s ‘Made for iPod’ and ‘Works with iPhone’, has advanced Multipoint performance (meaning two phones can be kept connected at once), has phonebook download and spoken text messaging, offers audio reminders if they’ve forgotten their phone or iPod and it works with each car speaker independently giving a richer sound (both with music and during calls). For a high quality hands-free experience the TK30 also has Motorola’s cutting-edge noise cancellation technology, which eliminates background noise in the car. Another nice touch is the fact it turns incoming text messages into speech, even pronouncing common text slang into real words, which makes a big improvement in safety over having to read texts. On top of this it offers quick and easy ISO installation with a full installation test provided to help deliver the service that customers expect. Once installed, the TK30 is fully integrated, so vital parking aid and navigation announcements can still be heard, even during calls. The MOTONAV TN series is something a little different for dealers selling hands-free solutions. This innovative new range combines sat nav with hands-free and can be professionally installed, meaning directions, calls and texts can be heard through the car speakers and a permanent power source can be enabled, eliminating any messy wires. The four models vary in spec but briefly run as follows: TN550; a 4.3in widescreen with UK and ROI mapping, TN555; a 4.3in widescreen with Western Europe mapping, TN760t; a 5.1in ultra widescreen with UK and ROI mapping and the TN765t; a 5.1in ultra widescreen with Western European mapping. All have multi-view displays and advanced voice menu control to allow for safer use while on the move (the TN700 allowing even destinations to be spoken), plus Motorola offer connected services that give Google search, weather, flight updates and fuel price check. The TN700 series also offers real-time traffic reports, as does the TN500 series when professionally installed, making for a great selling point from an installers point of view. NOkIA

The CK-200 from Nokia is a professionally installed kit and, as you can read elsewhere in this issue, Nokia claim it’s easier than ever to fit with no wiring for the remote control and no external microphone needed. The only wire to deal with is that going to the display, plus it also has a small interface unit to make things even easier. On the features side of things one of the key selling points is the multipoint connection, allowing for two mobile phones to work with the kit at once. This is ideal for business users who have a separate phone for personal use, or even for couples travelling together. Switching between the two connected phones enables the phonebook contacts, unread messages and call log of both phones to be accessed, with automatic phonebook downloading enabled for both too. Nokia point

out that the CK-200 offers excellent audio quality with DSP and embedded 9mm microphone (with optional external microphone installation possible for challenging environments). The kit comes with a 2.5in display, with thousands of shades of backlit display colours available, making it likely to match any dashboard. The screen is also easily removeable in order to add software updates via USB connector when at a computer. With attractive retail pricing and a relatively straight-forward fitting process, it’s no wonder that the CK-200 is a increasingly popular choice with both installers and for customers needing a quality hands-free car kit. NSv

NOvERO

Novero are a relative new-comer to the UK Bluetooth hands-free market, but they offer a selection of solutions for customers. Two of these, the TrustyOne and the TrulyOne are available to the UK, marking the mid-level and higher-end points in Bluetooth hands-free kits. The TrustyOne is a very simple kit with a stylish remote control that is intuitive to use. It can work with voice activated features, from voice-dialling to voice controlled SMS and e-mail and uses the latest in echo cancellation and noise reduction technology. It’s the ideal solution for customers wanting a complicated system and a cluttered dashboard. The TrulyOne is something of a flagship model, building on the same functionality as the TrustyOne but adding the ability to connect to two devices at the same time. The fact that Bluetooth-enabled music players can be linked to it aswell, means users can either have their work and personal phones linked at the same time, or their phone and music device at the same time (the music device possibly being one of those phones too). The TrulyOne also adds a stylish monochrome display that is clear, with big icons, and is controlled by the intuitive remote control. The same philosophy of simple design that Novero have on all their products is certainly present in this unit, and with easy installation and set-up, dealers can feel confident in offering this multipoint pairing enabled hands-free kit to their customers. Software updates are also easy via USB and Novero offer a hotline support for dealers who may experience and issues when installing. Contact: Daltec, 0208 5157820 or dal-tec.com

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

NSV hands-free systems offer dealers the chance to give their customers a really neat OEMlook installation. Distributed in the UK by Cobra, the selling point (aside from the quality of the product, thanks to NSV’s work at manufacturer level) is the fact that they come with controls designed to integrate perfectly into a vehicle to achieve a factory fitted appearance. With over 150 vehicle applications catered for, and a range of universal switches for those that aren’t, it’s the most discreet way to fit a Bluetooth hands-free system to a car. Switches come in either one-button format or three-button format, the single button allowing for answering, disconnecting, using voice dialling, redialling last number, adjusting the volume, rejecting calls, transferring to headset, disabling the Bluetooth connection and erasing the pairing memory. Those with the two additional buttons add next and previous track selection when listening to music via A2DP streaming or to turn the music volume up or down. There’s a whole page on this product elsewhere in this issue of M.E.N, but if you want to offer a discreet solution, or have customers who don’t want to mess with the aesthetics of their car interior too much, then the NSV Bluetooth hands-free systems are the perfect answer. 2011

The I.C.E Heroes evening is a fantastic new addition to the 2011 M.E.N Expo, and it promises to be great fun.

W

e unveiled plans for it last month in M.E.N, and the I.C.E Heroes event is gathering plenty of steam now. Every year the M.E.N Expo aims to offer something unique for both dealers and the exhibitors, and this year the I.C.E Heroes evening is just that. It’s set to be a spectacular evening of entertainment at the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday 15th March and it’s open to anyone in the trade. Essentially it’s a celebration of this industry we work in, a great excuse to get together in an informal environment and enjoy a night of insight from some of the major players within it. With drinks and a curry laid on, attending dealers and installers will be able to benefit from some of the business acumen and enthusiasm of these industry personalities, a useful and enjoyable way to help push their businesses on in 2011 and beyond. It’s the ideal way to round off a day at the event, or an opportunity for those dealers and installers to still benefit from the information available at the event if they can’t make it during the day. At the moment around nine 20min presentations are scheduled, the topics of which will be printed in future issues of M.E.N magazine. Unfortunately there is one drawback; spaces for the event are limited. To ensure you can book your place at the evening and avoid the disappointment of missing out, contact Lucy Poet in the M.E.N office today.

INDUSTRy pERSONALITy

inDustRy PeRsonALity:

chRis wooDs M.E.N chats with FOUR’s Technical Director, Chris Woods, a man with a serious passion for car audio. A lot of people in this industry, especially on the car audio side, are drawn to it by the passion they have for the end product. FOUR’s Chris Woods is no exception, the Braintree raised 34-year old now living in Birmingham having turned a hobby into a part-time job before finding himself doing it full-time back in 2004. It wasn’t his first calling on the professional ladder, a healthy brain leading him to a degree in Civil Engineering and an associated career path. But when the opportunity arose to turn his hobby into his career he didn’t look back, starting up Axis Distribution Ltd before merging it with FOUR in 2008. It’s a good job he changed career direction too as FOUR customers across the South

Chris, you’ve been in this market a while, what’s your proudest professional achievement so far? I’m most proud to be part of the best specialist car audio distributor in the UK, working with a great team of people with a shared passion.

That’s good, so what are the best and worst things about your job and about working in this industry? The best is; I love seeing my customers and getting involved in audio systems, design and set-up. Car shows are great, seeing and hearing great installs in both show and competition cars. All in all this industry has many people who are passionate about both cars and audio, be it loud or amazing hi-fi quality, and if I wasn’t too then I wouldn’t have started in this industry and wouldn’t still be here. The worst things; traffic jams! But it’s actually very disappointing to see the declining attitude towards good quality car hi-fi.

How do you see this market now then and what do you think the biggest changes have been? The market has changed in many ways over the years I have been involved, but many of the attitudes towards it haven’t. Cars used to come without audio systems, then OEM fitment became commonplace. Next, DIN arrived and upgrades were easy, then OEM radios started to come in all shapes and sizes, but facia kits soon followed. After that, factory navigation, screens and double DINs came along, but so did the aftermarket

East of England now get regular visits from the nice guy of car audio in his massively rimmed Audi, visiting them to tell them what’s new, offer encouragement and more often than not offer them very real support. That passion mentioned earlier means he’s one of those guys who can look for opportunity for his own company but really have the needs of his customers at his core. So much so that at car shows across the Uk at any weekend during the Summer you’ll find Chris talking to end users about car audio or demonstrating just what’s possible, aiming to drive custom to his dealers. In fact, he spent so much time in the Hertz-filled FIAT panda in 2010 it’s a wonder he still has eardrums left. Fortunately he has though, so M.E.N put these questions to him;

replacements, as did the CAN Bus systems, and the integration to those. Now MOST is here, and the aftermarket offerings are starting to come through. The point is, through all of these changes, the aftermarket car audio market has always had new challenges, but also new opportunities, and the over-riding factor has never changed; that is, that OEM car audio systems can always be replaced and upgraded, and that people are interested in listening to better quality music. Retail markets overall in the UK are seeing hard times at the moment, but the car audio market does little to help it’s self. There has been a decline due to lack of marketing on the basic facts of how a consumer can benefit from an upgraded car audio system, and this isn’t a new thing. All too often car audio is promoted on price and discounts, where it should be promoted on quality and benefits like most other luxury goods. I strongly believe that the future of the specialist car audio market place is strong, and that people, when demonstrated what a good quality car hi-fi system is, are interested, and do want better sound in their cars. At the end of the day, as a race, we always want better, we just need to be shown what is available.

So what does the future hold for you and for FOUR? As a company we are always looking towards the future, and from a products point of view we feel we have some of the strongest brand partnerships to deliver great quality car audio for many days to

come. We are currently expanding our product portfolio to offer a wider diversity of products to our customers and become more of a one stop supply solution to the specialist car audio store. Personally, I love my job and want more of the same, more customer support, more project cars, more people interested in car audio.

Ok, on another note, for the dealers you visit; tea of coffee? Water for me generally, but I do have a new found love for mochachinos thanks to AI Audio.

And what’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given that you can pass onto others? Keep focused on looking where you want to go, and that’s where you’ll end up. Look away and you’ll crash there. This was actually from Chris Walker (British Superbike Champion) on a trackday, but makes sense for life too.

Finally, what do you like doing in your spare time? Spare time! What’s that! Car audio is not just a job, but one of my hobbies, so I spend a lot of Summer weekends at car shows. When I’m not doing that I also love motorbikes, so you might catch me (if you can!) riding my GSXR750 around the back roads or on the occasional trip to the Nurburgring. I have a new personal interest that takes up most of the rest of my time, my 6 month old son, Tom, and as my customers keep asking, I can’t wait to get him his first set of speakers!

|ENIGMA CAR

DOWN AT THE DEALER

Down At the DeALeR:

enigmA cAR M.E.N pops into one of Kent’s remaining specialists and finds plans for a long and prosperous future Based just off the M20 motorway near Ashford, it would be easy to drive past Enigma Car. Tucked away in an industrial unit just off a busy local road there’s no shop window to attract passing trade, just a door, a sign and shutters to the workshop. Step inside though and there’s a pleasant surprise, with a sleek showroom that may still be a work in progress, but already does a good job of portraying what Enigma is all about. With a simple layout of products there’s that feel of a designer clothes shop where customers aren’t given masses of choice…but what is there is worth having. A central seating area with Sky Tv on hand and a selection of more refined magazines for waiting customers to read, further enhance this feeling of Enigma offering an experience, not just a place to buy something from.

36

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

But how they deal with their customers is really interesting. The team of Dane, the trainee engineer, Andy, the chief engineer, Matt and Steve, who both sub-contract, Leslie, in the office and their Saturday staff all treat customers the right way. It’s a nice way of doing business, but it’s also a good way. As mentioned earlier, Enigma don’t profess to be the cheapest, but they do believe in the quality of what they do and they back that up with a professional and courteous approach with their customers. Things like giving Waitrose hampers or Autoglym packs to customers who may have had grounds for a discount due to a delay or similar, not only leaves a sweet taste in that customer’s mouth, but is also likely to cost Enigma less that taking £100 off the bill. Other ways of going the extra mile, like paying for a taxi to pick a customer up if they need to get to the workshop to collect their freshly installed car, also help to create a positive view of what they do, outside of just the quality of their work. It may seem excessive, but the money spent here is likely to be less than a monthly advertising budget in the local newspaper, and probably a lot more effective. It’s this mix of higher quality products, going the extra mile with customers and being able to do the perfect job on no matter what area they work on, that Matt believes will see them prosper into the future. He plans on Enigma servicing the people of Kent and beyond for many years to come and sees that these factors will help him to achieve that. However, he also points out how some suppliers have really come to his aid and allowed Enigma to be in the enviable

position they are now. FOUR, Alpine, Paragon, Dal-Tec, Armour Auto and Celsus are all singled out for supporting Enigma in recent times of trouble, caused mainly by the banking crisis, and he’s genuinely grateful for that. His loyalty to them is sealed now and he points out how on top of the ways they helped Enigma, companies like FOUR and Parrot in particular continue to assist as he moves the company forward. “They work hard with shops to create business for us,” he explains, “and we’ve made good profit from them”. This is what it’s all about after all, and while they’ll continue to have a smaller foot fall that other companies, the customers they do have tend to be spending good money on decent products that gives Enigma a healthy profit and allows them the time to work to the standards they want. All in all that sounds like a pretty switched on plan, so it’ll be interesting to see what the next 15 years of Enigma Car will bring… because they’ll certainly be around for at least that long judging by what M.E.N saw.

On the customer side of things, those who come to Enigma (90 per cent of whom find their way there through word of mouth according to Matt) are sold what they need. Matt even turns customers away if their budget won’t stretch to something he believes they’ll be happy with, preferring to take the chance that they’ll save the extra and come back for a job they’ll be delighted with. It’s also noticeable that Enigma don’t deal with entry-level products, everything they offer is at the mid-level and upwards. It seems to be working well for them too, as Matt has points out; they may sell less than other companies but what they do sell they make a decent profit on. He also believes that dealing with higher-level products also reduces the risk of spending time on returns and the subsequent unhappy customers, which gives Enigma extra time to spend on broadening their scope. In fact, as the Aston Martin in their workshop shows they can offer most things to do with cars, in this case an engine

rebuild, bit of restoration, audio install and bespoke fabrication, and elsewhere engine remaps, vehicle detailing, bespoke exhausts, security and communication installs plus some own brand coach screens and online catalogue hosting using their own developed software.

C

Matt Hurst is the main man there now and he’s busily building the foundations for a bright future. With very little competition in Kent nowadays, Enigma may well have an advantage from the off, but they’re not resting on their laurels. Not only has Matt been busy behind the scenes increasing the efficiency of the company (things like job sheets for the technicians, turning off unused lights to save money, which he believes can be put into areas that matter, like their installations etc), he’s also keen to keep building on the so far successful ethos they have. “We want everyone who comes to us to be happy, to get a good deal and a professional job,” explains Matt, “we make sure they’re looked after and leave with a smile on their face, which is also what I try and do for the staff”. A perfect example of this with the staff is the fact that Matt has actually carpeted the workshop, making it warmer and easier on their knees when installing!

The FiaT Panda 2010 4x4 Parking sensor insTall. This months installation is courtousey of Martin Wright. Martin tells us it is an easy car to do and has supplied images and a right write up. To start, from the centre of the bumper mark out 60cm for the outer and 40cm for the inner sensors. The outer sensor can be mounted 7.5cm from the reflector and the inner sensors 14.5cm up from the bottom of the grill/top of the silver trim. There is a large grommet in the spare wheel well, you can easially route the cable through this.

There is a lack of space in the boot area to mount the junction box and therefore the box was mounted on the underside of the carpet with a cable tie. The sounder can be mounted on the underside of the support shelf, this can easily be heard by the driver.

You can locate the power feed for the reverse lights in the loom, locate the green wire.

RAyNER RANTS

|2011

RAYNER RANTS Adam Rayner has another pop at poor PR and suggests ways to further your own cause… As the song about paving paradise To put Up A parking Lot goes, “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone…” so is it for our trade. What used to be a huge industry has definitely shrunk. I was ICE editor of Max power (minute’s silence please…) at its peak and if I raved about an item, it sold in droves to a keen youth. Back then, I gather the whole trade was worth of the order of 250 million quid a year. Now, we are at eighty million and headphones sell ninety million’s worth a year, so I’m looking at diversifying myself, since it’s still Good Ears as are needed…but ICE is my first love. Back then, trips abroad for successful dealers were more common and were not trips to the CES or to SEMA for quasiuseful stuff but to tropical islands and you got told about it on special letterheads with palm trees on it! I never ever got to go on anything like that but I have been flown to Japan and vegas and fed and wined and cana-peed to bits. I’ve even flown virgin Upper Class once (which effing RUINS you for going back to coach….) and have been treated as ‘respected member of the press’ often embarrassingly well.
