Always stay a step ahead with NAVIGON Live Services. Live is quite simply better. Not just when it comes to music, but for information especially. Information is most useful when it’s up-to-date. Which is why NAVIGON Live Services deliver information to your car about mobile radar traps, parking spaces, the weather and the traffic situation. It’s called “driving with anticipation”. But we prefer “Live Services”. It’s what comes with our NAVIGON Live, for example. www.navigon.com/live

NEW LOOK, SAME GREAT TASTE! Hopefully you’ve already noticed the new look to Mobile Electronics News this month. Since the relaunch with the M.E.N name this is our first major revamp of the magazine and there’s a good reason for it. Just like you with your shops, it’s crucial to keep evolving, to make sure you’re constantly re-invigorating yourselves in the eyes of your customer and maintaining their interest. But this re-design also highlights the confidence that Mobile Electronics News has in the future of this industry. By regenerating the look we’re preparing for what is set to be a busy time ahead, with a summer of activity by suppliers and the M.E.N Awards later this year. There may still be an air of doom and gloom in the economy at large, but look around you and you will see that many companies in the mobile electronics industry are thinking and acting positively. This new look reflects that and, as a magazine, M.E.N will aim to continue giving a voice to any company that isn’t content to wallow in negativity and takes it upon themselves to push things forward.
issue a report on the Modified Nationals show that took place at the back end of May, which again may give cause to be optimistic. For those in the car audio market especially it was an event where installs were a massive priority for many visitors, which bodes well for the future. In fact, at a smaller event the following week in Cleethorpes (which we’ve reported on in the news section), installs were again out in force, suggesting that demand for quality audio is as high as ever. This re-launch issue also sees the first of a series of features that you’ll see in the magazine under the ‘Opportunity Knocks’ title. After consultation with proven industry experts, this series of features is aimed squarely at helping you to increase your sales by discussing various techniques. This month it’s all about making sure you’re up-selling properly to maximise your profits, an idea that’s been used extensively in retail across all markets and one that can make a big difference. In fact, everything in this magazine is designed to help your business to prosper, as M.E.N is produced for you with the aim of keeping the mobile electronics market the great and potentially profitable market we all know it can be. As always, if you have any feedback about the articles in M.E.N or have anything to say about the new look then we’d

It is also the official stolen vehicle tracking solution for BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover. Smartnav satellite navigation will also be distributed to independent retailers. It is a unique system that is supported by 24 hour personal assistants who can download routes to a vehicle in seconds. In addition it directly uses Trafficmaster’s real time traffic information to calculate the most efficient and quickest routes. It has proven to save drivers around four hours a month. KENWOOD GET SOCIAL Kenwood Electronics have taken a proactive step towards getting interactive with the end customer, launching specific social networking profiles across three areas. End users can now sign up to follow Kenwood on Twitter, be a fan on Facebook or watch products come to life on Kenwood’s own YouTube channel. “It has taken us a little time to get on these but we hope that by using them we will be able to talk directly to consumers about latest product releases and get feedback from them. With over 400 million Facebook users it is an ideal way of interation with consumers. YouTube is also excellent at showcasing products in video format,” said Kenwood. Clearly this is an exciting move for Kenwood and pinpoints the future for many companies in the mobile electronics market when it comes to marketing. As they say, it can also provide valuable feedback from the end customer so we’ll keep our eye on this relatively new method of reaching out to see if it does add up to positive result. ARMOUR ON TOP OF THE UK When you think of team-building exercises you may imagine building a raft together or falling blindfolded into the arms of a colleague. The guys and girls at Armour took things a bit further though. Mike Smith, Don Tolson, Steve Arlidge, Natalie Mitchell, Kristina Fordham, Clare Johnson, Chris Gibson, Rob Reed, Maria Gill and Carl Stuart, plus two drivers John Bell and Dennis Home decided to take on the Three Peaks Challenge. This entails climbing Snowdon, Scarfell Pike and Ben Nevis (the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland respectively) within a 24-hour time frame, which includes driving from one location to the next. The challenge ultimately meant that the team walked the equivalent of a marathon up and down mountains in around 10 hours…with a game of Twister thrown in at the top of each mountain! Armour’s Mike Smith gave M.E.N a quick rundown on each climb; “Snowdon, was very scenic but surprisingly tough, yet a good warm-up for things to come. Scarfell Peak should be ScarHELL peak as it was hell on earth! It’s not so touristy and is relentless in its incline. We did this mostly in the dark and it very nearly broke us all. Ben Nevis meant a huge drive north to Fort William early on Saturday morning to set out on the long climb to the highest point in the UK. It was a very, very tough finish to the challenge and there was even snow at the top!”. Despite the blisters and exhaustion the team raised over £10,000 for Help for Heroes, so a massive “well done” to everybody who took part. “It was without doubt the most awesome thing like this I have taken part in,” continued Mike, “it was

difficult beyond our expectations and punishing at many times on each mountain. That said, the team spirit and camaraderie was phenomenal and can only be appreciated fully by those that took part…a bond that will live long in the group. We are already planning our next adventure!”. Once again, well done to all those who took part and keep your eyes peeled for the Armour team’s next challenge! GARMIN NAVI 3700
|COVER STORY
Hello Angel!
The new Garmin nüvi 3700 series takes Portable Navigation Devices to a whole new level There’s no denying that the Portable Navigation Device market has become increasingly competitive over the years, so it takes something special to get the attention of the end user. But with the nüvi 3700 series, Garmin believe they have come up with just the thing to grab that attention…and looking at the specs, it’s hard to disagree. The first thing to notice is the outward appearance of the two nüvi 3700 series models, incredibly slim (just 8.7mm depth) with stylish aluminium and chrome finishes. The unique size of the units is a major achievement considering the features within, plus the fact they still manage to accommodate a highdetail 800x400 pixel 4.3in LCD display. There’s an iPod-esque look to the units too, despite being slimmer than something like an iPhone, but this is great for end users, as from the outset they don’t look daunting to use. In fact, switch the nüvi 3760T or 3790T on and it becomes clear that this is what Apple should have done with their navigation. A first for satellite navigation is the incorporation of a capacitive multi-touch display, allowing for the pinch and slide movement that many of us are familiar with now thanks to iPods/iPhones. This means virtually every function is accessed via the touchscreen, with only the power on/off function on the body of the unit.
14
www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu
Viewing wise, there’s also that familiar ability to view it as landscape or portrait mode, changing automatically depending on how the user holds it. On the navigation side of things, there’s obviously the ultra-intelligent guidance you’d expect from Garmin’s nuRoute’s technology. This includes the myTrends™ feature, which analyses your driving behaviour and predicts where you are likely to go before linking to the trafficTrends™ application. The trafficTrends feature looks at what other people are doing using tools such as historical traffic information and period of day, then helps to ensure your journey goes as smoothly as possible, whatever time of the day it is. The mapping also offers 3D terrain details and contour and 3D buildings and landmarks, yet there’s the additional bonus of PhotoReal™ junction view. The Garmin team visited all of the major motorway junctions in order to get this spot on and the result is further improved guidance thanks to the clarity this detailed view gives. Both units comes preloaded with detailed CityNavigator® NT street maps for 44 countries across Europe with the added bonus of subscription-free, pan-European lifetime traffic updates. They also give up-to-date alerts of speed cameras and offer useful functions such as Garmin Locate™ (which marks the position of where the device is removed from the windshield), Where Am I? (to find closest hospitals, police and petrol stations) and ecoRoute™ (for a
NUVI 3790T MINI TEST
more fuel-efficient route). The major difference between the 3760T and the 3790T models is the higher spec 3790T employs unique voice-activated navigation. Users simply set their own custom “wake-up” command to activate speech-recognition mode and nüvi 3790T acts on their spoken instruction for totally hands-free navigation. Give nüvi 3970T a name, tell it where you want to go and it’ll design a route specifically for the user. They can even give it a new voice using the free Garmin Voice Studio software. On top of all of this both units are Bluetooth compatible for hands-free calling and have the excellent pedestrian route guidance feature too. With so many people taking weekend breaks to European cities, this added element gives a brilliant excellent dimension when trying to find their way around cities they’re unfamiliar with. Not all mobile electronics dealers stock PNDs, but the feature-packed and stylish nüvi 3700 series re-invigorates the product and should appeal to the mass market. For those many drivers (and indeed pedestrians) who want a smart, compact and easy to use device to help them get about, then the nüvi 3700 series is the perfect choice. For more information or to place an order, contact Car Electronics on the details below.
The unit is indeed remarkable slim and well built. It proved simple to get up and running with intuitive on-screen instructions and no prior charging needed. The test route included motorway driving which showed the merits of the PhotoReal™ junction view perfectly; incredibly clear and easy to follow, it navigated one tricky junction with consummate ease. The ‘voice command’ option added an excellent dimension, again offering a simple set-up (although re-naming it proved ‘KITT’ was not strong enough for it to recognise, but ‘OK KITT’ was). While it struggled to hear at high speeds in an old rattly car, at slower speed it was perfect, allowing us to re-route purely through vocal command, hands never leaving the steering wheel, which is great for safety. As you would expect from Garmin routing and rerouting was quick, functions like speed camera detection worked faultlessly and all-in-all the clear to view, simple to use nuvi 3790T was a joy to use. We’d have few qualms about letting our eldest and most short-sighted relative lose with this system and we’d fully expect them to have the same experience as we did. MODIFIED NATIONALS
Modified Nationals 2010
M.E.N visits Peterborough for possibly the best consumer show of the season for the car audio market.
M
odified Nationals is one of the most established shows on the calendar and, while it had a faltering start with changes of venue, it’s always had a great atmosphere and been well supported. Thanks to the hard work of the promoters it’s continued to grow and has now been at the East of England Showground in Peterborough for recent years. Bad weather dampened things a little in those first years at this new venue, but with the opening up of the impressive indoor area, not even heavy rain or gale force winds can get in the way of Modified Nationals now. The show carves a unique place for itself in the show calendar, resisting the temptation of basing itself at a racetrack to cater for the performance enthusiasts and sticking with its roots of show cars, car clubs and, significantly for the mobile electronics market, the audio enthusiasts. This gives it a completely different slant from most other events now and that is certainly no bad thing. With the indoor arena many visitors suggest that it’s reminiscent of the old Max Power Live events at the N.E.C, with top quality, freshly released show cars mixing with big trade stands and a continuous supply of scantily clad promo models and Max Babe wannabe entrants. It may not be the same kind of scale inside as those halcyon days of Max Live, but it has the trump card of providing acres of outdoor space and on-site camping, making it much more accessible to the masses. With Max Power’s offices only a spit away too, it’s no surprise that the magazine’s banners were prominent throughout the show and the stage areas, only adding to those comparisons to their own, now defunct, event. Taking place over two days, Modified Nationals also manages to create that ‘big event’ feel, as enthusiasts plan to make a weekend of it with hotels booked or tent pitched and great evening entertainment laid on. The other benefit is that in the case of poor weather on one day, there’s always the chance of the sun coming out the next. This was the case for 2010, with rain keeping a lot of visitors inside the hall on the Saturday, but Sunday’s sun allowing them to spread across the event. Even with the sun though, the inside area remained extremely busy, with the area just outside of the hall constantly rammed with visitors. This again is great news for the audio market as the FOUR Masters Car Clinic and EMMA competitions were being held in that area, meaning visitors were exposed to audio whether they wanted to be or not! And it wasn’t just their eyes that were focussing on audio, perhaps the standout aural delight in that area came from the Hertz-filled Fiat Panda that Chris Woods of FOUR was playing with most of the weekend. Set up to effectively be a PA system, every type of music from opera to Iron Maiden was thrown out across the show in perfect clarity, upstaging the actual PA system of the nearby stage. It’s an impressive thing to hear if you get a chance, the loudness, crystal clear sound and ability of it to play all types of music with equal brilliance an experience worth listening too. Further away, the dB drag was set up on one of the grassy areas allowing for the competitors to spread out nicely, and not too far away from them was Armour Audio’s stand. This outside spot may not have been great on the slightly damp Saturday, but on Sunday they were drawing crowds aplenty and really getting into the spirit
20

|2010 of things. Holding competitions that involved two blokes holding bass boxes with outstretched arms while being danced around by the Armour promo girls was great fun, and certainly entertained the onlookers. Naturally they also had a number of demo cars on hand, including their Mutant Mitsubishi Colt, to show off their impressive range of brands. Also outside were the ever-present Steve Watson Car Audio (with In Phase’s 350Z parked by its side) and Electronics Worldwide, both offering show deals on audio for the visitors. Electronics Worldwide also had a large stand inside the hall enabling them to attack the event on both fronts which was a great move, the inside stand looking particularly busy throughout the two days. Normally the inside area is always dominated by the audio companies and 2010 certainly wasn’t about to change that. Midbass once again took a prime position at the entrance to the main hall, the VIBE truck never failing to look impressive and sound equally impressive to those brave enough to step inside the bass tunnel. Stretched out in front of it were numerous demo cars, both those built by Midbass and those of customers, including a freshly finished, black Peugeot 107 that Highdown Car Audio and Security unveiled to the owner at the show. Packed with Vibe audio it had some great touched such as the water feature in the back window which allowed for a great visible show of the impact of bass! Talk Audio took a stand just opposite Midbass, using Ian Pinder’s van to get attention on the Saturday before replacing it with a fresh new creation on the Sunday as Ian headed outside to compete. This new creation is a self-built vehicle by one of Ian’s good friends…and the influence has clearly rubbed off. Taking a Volvo estate, it now houses 100 speakers of various ranges, a sealed section in the middle of the vehicle (visible through Perspex with ultraviolet paint detailing), a full fibreglass remodelling of the cockpit and an amp rack at the back which swings out into full view. It’s possibly one of the most mentally arranged ICE cars to hit the scene in a while and a
real feat of workmanship and imagination. Bringing some more understated but no less impressive audio to the masses was Car Audio Security, who fronted a long row of high-class demo cars on their stand. Their Ferrari, Impreza and TT always manage to attract the cameras of visitors, and this time they were joined by a pair of Golfs, including the excellent G-Werks Mk4 Golf, which supports the perfect attention-grabbing
showcasing a novel way of covering plastics, metals, carbon fibres etc. At first it looks like vinyl wrapping but the process is very different and much more versatile for smaller areas (including engine bay covers), so could provide some great scope for twists to audio installs. Aside from all of the stands though, one of the most encouraging things for the audio market was with the enthusiasts who were bringing their own cars
‘ Modified Nationals is one of the most established shows on the calendar and, while it had a faltering start with changes of venue, it’s always had a great atmosphere and been well supported. ‘ stance. Kenwood were also there with their classy Scirocco, a car that saw last season in with style and now boasts new OEM wheels to keep it fresh. Interestingly, at either end of the Car Audio Security were House of Kolor (paints) and Alcar (alloy wheels), who both used audio-filled cars on their stands too. The former used a Hyundai Accent with fantastic Alpine install and extremely stylish remodelling of the dashboard, while the latter employed a Mitsubishi EVO with clean JL Audio install in the boot. Surely this is a great sign for the audio market as even those not in the sector see the attraction great installs can hold. Pro Plus was another company inside the hall, using their space to simply show-off the installs of various demo cars. Naturally the Rockford Fosgate filled Mk2 Golf stole most peoples’ ability to hear, but there were some other treats like the Orion install in the EG Civic built by Sound Evolution. Towards the other end of the hall, FOUR also had an inside stand with the Source Sounds built EMMA competitor Mercedes running Audison audio on display. On the Sunday they also moved in a stunning little Polo, which employed Hertz audio products in the boot with sub and two amps visible. Hit a switch though and the floor raises on hydraulics to reveal a spectacle beneath, including the red lit internals of the two amps on that moving false floor. Interestingly a company called Garnishdip had a car on this stand too,
to the show. Throughout the outside areas installs were highly present in various forms, but inside with the Show ‘n’ Shine competition, they were of another level. Perhaps due to the judging criteria virtually every car in the shining line-up boasted a great audio set-up, which is bound to help inspire visitors into creating their own installs. Xquisite Automotive, perhaps more renowned for their impressive bodywork creations but a FOUR Master and extremely accomplished installer, had plenty of their customers’ cars in this area including a newly released Corsa. This used a hot rod influence including a bench seat up front, yet managed to perfectly fit an DLS Reference Series install amongst all the sculptured leather. As a showcase for audio installs, this area where each car could be seen from the front and the rear, was exceptional. In summary, Modified Nationals 2010 was a great show for visitors, but it was also a great show for the audio market and one that should be put in your diary for 2011 immediately. The organisers have always made a big thing of this element and thanks to the efforts of those companies who attended with stands and demo cars, plus the fact installs were given prime attention within much of the show, it’s likely visitors were leaving with thoughts of audio products rather than performance or styling ones. That’s an excellent thing for the industry, it’s just a shame Modified Nationals only happens once a year!

Opportunity Knocks
|2010
Opportunity Knocks
Number 1: Sell up, not down
E
very month ‘Opportunity Knocks’ will showcase an idea or technique that can make a positive difference to the profits of dealers. If there’s one thing that everyone in the mobile electronics market agrees on, it’s that the market is tough, competitive and at times unpredictable, so these features will aim to explore a number of different initiatives that can help to increase sales. In the first of this series of features M.E.N explores the idea of selling up, rather than selling down. This is an age-old technique used in the retail environment, but are you making sure that you and your staff are employing it? Effectively, what this means is that you take the opportunity with customers to maximise your profits from them by offering them more. The classic example of this is in well-known burger restaurants where the seller will ask if you’d “like to make that a large meal?”, after you’ve ordered just a standard cheeseburger and chips with a drink. A lot of the time the customer in this instance will go for the larger option, especially as it seems like a good deal, and while the restaurant only makes a small amount extra, the cost to them is minimal…hence a greater profit when added up over numerous times. The beauty of this example is that everyone leaves happy; the customer has more food for a good price, the restaurant has made more money.
if a customer is buying speakers for their doors, maybe you could suggest some sound deadening material to help make the most of their new purchase. Buying a sub, perhaps some decent quality cabling would be a good additional purchase for your customer. As the dealer you’re probably in a better position to pre-empt what they might need, which is ultimately what up-selling is all about. In fact, this highlights one of the rules of up-selling, If you get it wrong you can come across as pushy and you may even put them off if what you’re suggesting doesn’t have any real merit. Ultimately you need to concentrate on what your customer needs, not what you think you would need in their situation, and by doing this it should help you make the right suggestions. The way you go about it has to be right too. You need to mention the up-sell item and give a brief benefit. To avoid sounding pushy it’s then best to ask permission to describe it in more detail. For example, if trying to up-sell sound-deadening you may say: “If you want those speakers to sound even better, have you thought about sound deadening?”. You can then add something like; “I’ve got a sample of the material if you’d like to see how it works?”. If the customer agrees, don’t just say, “that’s it. It helps stop vibrations” … you need to sell it. “All the best sounding cars use this as it really helps to focus the sound and you’re not losing any of the clarity to vibrations in the metal. The best thing is it’s cheap and really easy to fit”. By this point the £10 or so you’re suggesting they spend on top of the cost of the speakers they’re already buying seems a small price to pay for the advantages it gives. You could even offer deals on up-sell packages, like in this case you could offer extra sound deadening material for other parts of the car at a slightly discounted price.
As such, you need to always remember that you need to be making a profit, otherwise there’s no reason to be doing what you’re doing. And up-selling is what can help you to make that profit. In the mobile electronics market it’s that same harmony that you should be looking for. At the heart of everything you do should be the aim to give customers the best possible products, advice and service, although you can’t ever lose the focus that you are a business. As such, you need to always remember that you need to be making a profit, otherwise there’s no reason to be doing what you’re doing. And up-selling is what can help you to make that profit. Almost everything in your store is linked in one way or another so the ability to up-sell should be relatively easy, especially as by the point of up-selling the customer has already decided to buy, so the up-sell becomes more of a ‘by the way’ suggestion. Take for example a customer coming in for a replacement headunit. Would you simply let them purchase that and walk out of your store, or would you suggest other things they could buy that would make the audio experience even better; a set of component speakers for example? Alternatively,

When you’re the customer at other retailers the idea of up-selling can feel like a devious way to make you spend more money needlessly. In fact, this can be the case in outlets where they don’t fully understand the concept. As the retailer though, you need to make sure you’re doing it properly, adding real value to your customer’s purchasing experience while adding to your profits at the same time. Training yourself and your staff in employing this method is critical, analysing not only the related products that can be up-sold but also the ways in which you do so. Get it right and you’ll see your profits increase and your customers happy, get it wrong though and customers may be put off coming back to you.

Naturally, Automonitor continue to be at the forefront of technological advances and have their latest rear seat entertainment products to offer too. The AM-HR750 dual DVD product includes two universal headrests with integrated 7in TFT LCD monitors (or the AM-HR850 with 8.5in TFT LCH monitors) that come with built-in DVD slot, USB port and SD card reader. The kits also come with two dual channel infrared headphones, making it a comprehensive kit with relatively straight-forward installation. These are available in black, grey or beige finishes and either 9in or 11in TFT monitors meaning there should be one to suit any vehicle’s interior. STEEL MATE
POINT DEALERS TO THE FUTURE
Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems are set to be big and Steel Mate can help you to be a part of it. Steel Mate are well-known to mobile electronics dealers and installers thanks to their impressive range of product offerings, from parking sensors to HID headlights and CAN Bus interfaces. They are also leading the way when it comes to Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), as they recognise the significance this product may have for dealers and installers in the coming years.
dealers and installers, Steel Mate are adamant that there are still good profits to be made from the system, even when taking the outsourcing of fitting the valves into consideration. TPMS could also mean additional scope for profit in the fitting though, should dealers invest in the equipment needed. With the increase in awareness and demand for these systems, Steel Mate are continuing to evolve their systems and claim more models are scheduled for release later this year. Parking Solutions Guide
PARKSAFE
Parksafe offer a range of sensors including the traditional audible alert or a combined display and can be fitted to the front and rear of a vehicle, offering total parking control. Parksafe provides safety for children, pets, pedestrians and low objects, giving peace of mind when manoeuvring in populated places. As Parksafe says, they also protect no claims bonuses, avoid damage to vehicles and can avoid drivers from forking out for a typical excess of around £250 in the event of a prang. With the rear sensors the vehicle reverses towards an object, then an audible buzzer, mounted inside the rear of the vehicle starts sounding at 3 beeps per second when the object is closer than 1.67 metros to the rear of the vehicle. As the vehicle gets closer to the object the beeping frequency increases from 5 to 8 beeps per second. When the vehicle is about 30 cm from the object the beeping becomes constant. The sensor unit is powered off the reversing lights circuit in the vehicle so is only activated when reversing. The front units are wired in such a way that whenever your customer switches the ignition on, so is Parksafe Control unit. It works on the same principle as the rear sensors. The visual display unit shows bars when coming together as you get closer to the obstacle. At any time the front sensor unit can be de-activated by an on/off switch mounted on the dashboard of the vehicle. Contact: C.S.S, 01773 746591 or park-safe.co.uk

INPHASE
Passion & Performance
In Phase keep the pulse of the car audio market beating. M.E.N caught up with In Phase’s Steve Digva to find out how they continue to achieve this Formed over 20 years ago, In Phase has gone from strength to strength working within the car audio market. They now boast an 80,000sq/ft premises in Nottinghamshire, making them one of the biggest car audio distributors in the UK. With 34 staff, many of whom have over 10 years experience in retailing car audio, the company continues to spread the car audio message, doing everything within their powers to make sure dealers are well armed to make a profit while the end user is sent away happy…and importantly, they’re sent away happy to return to the dealer in the future. As a self-confessed car audio addict, In Phase’s Steve Digva believes this is crucial for the continued success of the car audio market, so M.E.N caught up with him to find out more about where the company is now and what the future holds.
What’s the one thing you believe people should know about In Phase? In Phase’s strength is that we are a distributor. In fact, we’re the UK’s biggest dedicated car audio distributor, which is a known fact amongst manufacturers. Because we’re dedicated solely to car audio, it means we really are the people to deal with if you want car audio.
So what advantages do retailers get by dealing with In Phase then? Firstly, we have over £3m of car audio products in stock. Secondly though, is our product knowledge. We know what is and isn’t selling and we can give retailers realtime information and recommend to them what’s leaving shelves. They don’t have to listen to us, but we’ve got no loyalty to any one brand…my loyalty is to our customers. They’re the ones who keep a roof over our heads so it’s crucial they are at the forefront of everything we do.
Is that something that’s important to you personally? Absolutely. I’ve been in the car audio market for over 20 years, including retailing, so I know what it takes and can offer my experience to help directly. We all have a deep passion for car audio…the museum we’re creating at our headquarters being the prime example of this. Dealers will call me at 10 O’clock at night with installation problems or other queries and I’ll always take the time to help them. Not only is this because I’m passionate about the products but also because I want our dealers to succeed. Personally it’s never a chore and this is reflected in the way we do business. For us, it’s not a business, it’s a way of life!

What other help can you offer dealers? We’re not just here to sell car audio, we can help your business. One of my biggest concerns is that businesses are getting split up and retailers don’t have any one to turn to for help. A lot of retailers are enthusiasts first and don’t necessarily understand the business skills needed to survive. We’re one of the only companies left in the UK who are prepared to train people, and we’re equipped to do it from our Nottingham headquarters…dealers just have to come to us. We even do it on Saturdays and Sundays. On top of this we also offer all the things people should expect: warranty, service and back-up, stock cleansing, point of sale material and advertising support.
Sounds great, so how do you see the future for In Phase? In Phase’s future is in the hands of our dealers. We’re also manufacturers so we can talk to dealers about their requirements and look to their future requirements, with the added advantage of being able to move quickly. Our dealers have direct input to the design and performance of our products so we can make sure our products reflect the needs of our customers.
Any last advice for dealers?
We’re not interested in just taking your money and neither should dealers be. It’s about adding value for money. We’re with the mass market of consumers, and dealers can sometimes be chasing the customers spending £2000 rather than £500. The guy spending £500 is around every week, but those spending £2000 are rare. If you cater for those mass consumers who are showing enthusiasm for car audio and give them a good experience with added value for money, who knows, they may end up spending more in the future. Demonstration is a big key here...how many dealers show customers what they can buy now but not what they could then add to the system at a later stage? Knowledge is power so let’s use our power to our advantage there’s a need to live for today, but it’s also wise to plan for tomorrow. If you would like to know more about In Phase’s products and services or are interested in becoming a dealer, contact the team on the details below. THE AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL BUSINESS IS BEING TURNED

For too long, the automotive electrical business has been ticking along without much innovation, but now MetaSystem are bringing new products to the marketplace. Under the guidance of new distributors Vestatec, car accessory dealerships are enjoying the benefits of much quicker fitting times, and a host of new features for their customers.
can be the difference between making a profit and breaking even, and between keeping or losing your hair! MetaSystem has created wire-free fitting for a range of products, which removes the need to thread wires throughout the vehicle, and saves a fortune on fitting time. MetaSystem also offer a choice of parking assistance sensors and monitors that include number plate fixtures with parking sensors built-in. Once again, M.E.N is giving dealers the chance to have their voices heard by opening up the voting lines. There is a huge array of categories, covering everything from component speakers to hands-free car kits, so there will be a number of areas where your expertise and experience can really be put into practice. All you have to do is visit mobileelectronicsnews.eu, register and then vote for your winners. This year, manufacturers will be putting forward their best-selling new products from the last 12 months, so voters have simply to pick which of those are their favourite. So that you can see the categories that are covered, we have printed them below, allowing you to see which categories are relevant to your business. It’s not just the products that you have supplied, used and installed that can be voted on though, there’s also the chance to give those suppliers and manufacturers who have made the biggest difference to your business a thumbs up. These in particular are highly prized awards as the acknowledgement of those on the frontline means a massive amount to any supplier, so chose carefully.

A new way to sell trackers Opportunity The fastest growth area for SmarTrack, TOADTRAK and Mototrak has been to allow the customer to view their vehicle online or by mobile phone. Why not start your own Approved Tracking Platform (ATP) today and start receiving subscription royalties. We have many microsites running over the last two years, allowing the customer to locate their assets in this new era of low cost online tracking. A fully developed Thatcham Approved bespoke VTS tracker microsite is available, built in a style specified and authorised by you. We can design and deliver a website package for your brand; you could use this site to advertise other products and services. These site advertisements would be seen by every customer that logs in to view the location of their vehicle, these are great educational tools for all the family and friends. This is the best way to build your customer base as they can see the system working creating a desire to purchase an online approved system as soon as possible, or next time they buy a new vehicle.
If you require further information we have a free colur information pack. Please call 0800 279 6530 or call Martin Wallis direct on 07775 000865.
