THE ED UNIT SPEAKS: THE GREY POUND I know several people who’s savings accounts probably tilt the right side of a million squids and they all have one thing in common, they are middleaged and rather careful with their cash. More than one of them has a penchant for collecting interesting cars, and for ‘interesting’ read ‘old’ and it’s not uncommon for them to be disappointed in the sound system compared with their 645 or Merc V8. Most of you will be familiar with upgrading old cars – I’ve recently done an Elan +2SE myself where the owner wanted to be able to hear a bit of music at speeds above walking pace (about 5mph was all the original system was good for). He didn’t want it to show, so I fitted some door speakers which are invisible to the occupants. It involved the tricky job of cutting the door trim and grinding the backing off the lower carpet trim till it was acoustically-transparent. Thanks to the person who invented the Dremel, it was performed without too much drama but it couldn’t solve the problem of having to add some extra glass fibre around the speaker hole. Rather than make up a former to keep the fibre-reinforced filler from wandering past the speaker hole area, I used a couple of polythene packing ‘air-bags’ to block off its escape. Don’t think I’m doing you out of a paying job by the way, this bloke squeaks when he walks (he won’t be reading this!) and, apart from the cost of the bits, my ‘payment’ is being a named driver able to spank a very smart 42yrold orange and chrome car around my local lanes – a bit of a head-turner (evening ossifer!). Back to the plot. How do you find rich customers (those who are willing to pay) who could be wooed into having a bespoke job on their collector’s car? One method would be to take some images of work - which most installers do on a routine basis - on collectable cars and build up a portfolio for the website and publicity which could include magazine advertising. There is no shortage of publications in this area – Classic Car, Classic Car Mart, Collectors Car (I’m making some of these up to see if you are paying attention), American Classic, Classic Truck, Classic Classic. Jesting aside, there really are loads of them, and I haven’t even mentioned the best car magazine in the world – read by nerds, the rich and the very very rich – EVO.

‘CAR TECH MANIACS’

I was watching a Police Camera Action prog on ITV the other day, and I learnt from presenter Adrian Simpson that prodding a sat nav screen is apparently not illegal on the move, but any wandering about as you do it could get you done for driving without due care and attention. No wonder people sneer at tv prog’s with juvenile levels of pseudosensationalism. Simpson referred to these sat-nav twiddlers as ‘car tech maniacs’. Huh?

HI-TECH POWER SUPPLY The Bower Power LP-200 13.8V power supply is continuously rated at 100 Amps and where an even greater current delivery is required, two or more LP-200s can be connected in parallel, each one delivering its maximum output. It is also small enough to easily fit under a demo car. ALPINE INFINITI FX45

It’s ‘R’ for Alpine as their Euro-demo car gets revamped with new Type R subwoofers

Prompted by the introduction of Alpine’s new Type-R subwoofer series, Alpine’s European Infiniti FX45 demo car been completely reworked using these new subs. The Alpine installer crew in Germany headed by Manfred Stengl faced the challenge to better the previous install and to come up with a car to wow showgoers. The Infinity FX45, still an uncommon model on European roads, is a car that can’t be ignored with its bulging bodywork, further boosted by massive 22 inch OZ Botticelli aftermarket wheels fitted with 285/35 Toyo Proxes.

M

ost of the interior is covered with a mix of leather and Alcantara and the front seats replaced with Recaro Ergomeds. First of the changes was the placing of a 10 inch woofer in the door. This sometimes entails removing the door mechanism and locking the glass shut but in this car the leccy windows still work thanks to the use of the new Alpine flat subwoofer line, also available in 12 inch form. Steps taken to ensure a rattle-free performance in the door included the use of a massive steel mounting ring in the custom made glass fibre moulding. Steel was also used to make the mounting rings for the SPR-17S 170mm speakers up high and forward in the doors to take care of the mid to high frequency range. Both speakers are aligned towards the driver’s head for good staging. The system’s nerve centre is the new Media Station IVA-D800R. The D800R is a competition-quality head unit which has gone through a meticulous choice of components, copper shielded chassis and intensive R&D. This is teamed up with the long-awaited audio processor PXA-H800. The H800, unlike the H650, can be aligned manually as well as being able to use the IMPRINT automatic set up. However, the

“The Type-R subwoofers are the centre of attraction with half a dozen 12s in what was the rear passenger area. The enclosure for the subs can be changed between bass reflex or sealed.” resulting automatic settings can be modified to meet the customer’s taste. The system also includes the KCE-635UB, an add-on USB video player, allowing full touch control from the screen of the IVA-D800R. Vehicle information such as air condition settings, vehicle status and others can be monitored on the factory screen. To give way for the IVA-D800R, the aircon controls had to move down. The whole centre console was built from scratch to allow the necessary modifications. The Type-R subwoofers are the centre of attraction with half a dozen 12s in what was the rear passenger area. The enclosure for the subs can be changed between bass reflex or sealed. A port can be opened and closed using a motorised flap. One push of a button allows you to experience the difference between both set ups within seconds. The enclosure used 40 kgs of Silent-Coat damping material. The extra weight of the subs and box was taken care of by using Eibach performance springs and dampers. To show the new Type-R woofers at work, the installers have created two windows in the rear of the enclosure. In the back there are nine compact PDX amplifiers drive the system, each mono amp rated at 1200 Watts. The power of the PDX-M12s gives an overall system output of around nine kilowatts. Next to the amps there are five TME-S370 touch screen monitors. They were flush-mounted in a frame with piano black glossy finish which blends nicely with the leather surfaces in the rest of the trunk. Sources include KCE-635UB USB video interface and NVE-M300P navigation system.

PRODUCT GUIDE

COMPONENT This month MEN looks at premium and popular ranges of full range component and coaxial speakers

People are still walking into dealers’ shops looking at speakers and wanting them installed. There are not as many as there used to be but MEN has included comments about product and the business they bring, from Creative Car Sounds, John Kleis Car Audio, KTD UK, Car HiFi Centre Cheltenham and.. the list goes on. A commonality between dealers comments is that most of the customers looking for good quality component sets have a higher than average disposable income, essentially enjoy music – which is a given! And are susceptible to being schmoozed in the shop. This is a winwin situation resulting in happiness behind the wheel, recommendations to their friends, and that warm and fuzzy feeling of another satisfied customer!

Alpine Type-R

Blaupunkt GT Power series Attractive metallic blue polypropylene cones and heavy duty grilles puts the Blaupunkt GT Power series into the younger buyers zone. Jason Grieves of KTD UK.com based in Gateshead has long been loyal to the Blaupunkt brand and finds that the GT Power units are decent sellers since they were introduced late last year, he said: “We’ve got fitting facilities here and I have listened to the GT Powers in a body-kitted Mondeo owned by a young customer and, they seem good. The chunky grilles look the part too.” The 160mm 65.2 c model component speaker set comes with a one inch tweeter and has a peak power rating of 260W. Claimed sensitivity is a claimed 92dB and unusually, it has a three Ohm impedance rating which should conjure some extra volume from lower-power amplifiers. Mounting depth of this typical six inch component unit is just under 58mm. There is a wide range of tweeter-in-speaker units in the GT Power series, mainly of the triaxial persuasion. There’s also a separate 6.5 inch woofer available and cosmetically-matching subs. Autosound 01274 685411 www.blaupunktdirect.co.uk

The Type-R series has been around for a while now and has earned a good reputation. Stuart at North London-based Creative Car Sounds, for instance, thinks they are the most bullet-proof speaker he’s ever stocked, he said: “You can pump loads of power into them and they never blow up. I’ve run them in my car hooked to massive amplification and they will go very loud. Another good feature is that they are not over-bright – lots of manufacturers tend to produce speakers which have this characteristic. “Because they go loud we find them popular with younger customers. They are a bit chunky and the actual finish is not of reference quality but their reliability is outstanding.” A new improved range of Type-Rs will be available in April which retain key features plus cosmetic and technical refinements. SPR-60C/-50C models gain a wave guide centre cap to reduce phase distortion and produce a better focus. All speaker cones feature a multilayer construction with a linear drive magnet and dual gap voice coil. Tweeter for both component and coaxial models have a ring tweeter that has swivel adjustment. Installation is made easier with the new range following a massive reduction in the size of the crossover box. It provides four levels of tweeter adjustment to achieve optimum balance between tweeter and woofer. Two woofer sizes are offered requiring a 118 and 136mm mounting hole, plus a 6x9 with 148x223mm dimensions. Peak power handling is nominally around 300W for all models. |COMPONENT SPEAKERS Audison Voce The award-winning Audison Voce (pronounced ‘Voh Chay’) is based on the extremely high-end Thesis speakers and uses some of the technology and materials from this range. Sales guy Connor at John Kleis Car Audio in Reading, has been selling the Voces for about six months now, he said: “They are really well built and the sound is smooth as expected from a monitor-class speaker. We sell them mainly to the more mature customer who you can reckon to have a good ear and is likely to listen to soul, jazz and classical music. The younger head-banging customer usually wants something more in your face. I hear from our installers that the wire between the back of the coaxial speakers and the crossover is a bit short which sometimes needs extra thought to install where space is tight.” The Voce range includes separate units as well as coaxials and complete two and three-way systems. The coaxial speakers incorporate a swivelling tweeter. The woofers have an open design chassis with aerodynamic spokes which Audison claims to drastically reduce back-wave reflection. The cones are a mixture of cotton and pressed paper. A lightweight copper-clad aluminium wire is used for the voice coil to ensure a fast response whilst a radial venting keeps things cool. Fluid-damped tweeters are made of Tetelon, a mix of silk and cotton which provides a low mass and is resonance-free up to ultrasonic frequencies. The Voce AV K6 was recently awarded the European In-Car Speaker System 2010-2011 by EISA, the European Imaging and Sound Association. A panel of 60 journalists judging, made favourable comments about the low distortion, efficiency and value of the system. Distributed by FOUR MASTERS 0800 652 5125 www.fourcars.co.uk

Focal K2 Power and Polyglass French-made Focal speakers are not cheap but the construction and performance amounts to a bargain if the customer is willing to pay. Both the K2 Power and Polyglass ranges feature Focal’s concave tweeters. The main difference between the two is the woofer cone material. The K2 series has a thermoformed, structural foam central core, coated with an Aramid fiber layer on the front side and a glass layer directly derived from the Utopia series speakers. This hybrid technology significantly improves membrane rigidity without raising the weight. The Polyglass cone has a layer of hollow silica micro-spheres over a cellulose pulp. This combines traditional pulp damping properties with glass rigidity with only a small increase of the overall mass of the cone. The hard surface is said to improve accuracy and neutrality in the midrange. The K2 uses a TNK or TN53K tweeter whereas the Polyglass has the TNB series – both inverted dome types. K2 Power series speakers have a higher rating than Polyglass. Depending on the model, K2 is rated around 200W peak and Polyglass nearer 100 Watts. Crossovers have three-way, 3dB step adjustment for matching. Distributed by Armour Auto 0800 7839125 www.armourauto.com

Clarion Ultra These speakers have a high-end look with an aluminium die-cast woofer chassis and a layer of pewter-coloured titanium applied to a glass fibre cone – multi-layered cone finishes are proven to help produce a cohesive sound so it can be assumed that Clarion are on the right track. A matching tweeter surface with titanium on a silk dome on their 25mm unit is also good news. The tweeter has a claimed top end of 80kHz which is extreme, and uses a neodymium magnet. The SRU1720S-01 is the six inch 165mm model with a peak power rating of 400W with a four Ohm nominal impedance. It has a high quality 12dB/oct crossover with a translucent casing which has a single 3dB attenuation switch. The woofer grille is one of the finest mesh offered which shows off the metallic finish of the cone. Clarion 01793 870400 www.clarion.com/gb

Fusion CP series Breaking from the bright metallic green look (and not an alien in sight) the CP-CM60 has a more professional grey finish. Power handling is good for both the five and the six inch versions at 250 and 280 Watts respectively. The cones use an IMPP polypropylene base while the dome-style tweeter is a silk job, underlying Fusion’s efforts to produce a good sound. The six inch has a mounting diameter of 131mm with a 67mm depth. It has a credible frequency range starting at 29Hz. The crossover is small and has a 6dB/octave slope which should help with transients and has a crossover frequency 3.5kHz. CEL TRADE 0116 2449846 www.celtrade.com

JL Audio Evolution C3 series JL has got the component and coaxial market covered with this convertible series. The popular 650 165mm units are rated at 150W peak with an efficient sensitivity figure of 96dB at 1W/0.5m. This was endorsed by David Holton, co-owner of the Car HiFi Centre, Cheltenham. He said: “In coaxial form we really like them and sell lots. The citing choice of the tweeter for us is also a good stocking solution. They are not cheap but they are good value, we concentrate on selling customers a good front speaker and these are good. They also cater for a wide range of customer tastes because they go loud as well as being high quality.” Build quality is reflected in the one inch silk dome tweeter. Its carrier can be mounted with a simple twist onto the woofer’s pole piece after removing the phase plug. The tweeter’s coaxial wiring connections can be made from the front of the woofer so that it can be fitted in situ in the car. The woofer chassis is made from an extremely strong glass-filled polymer. The cone has a voice coil designed with a long coil for linear response. The crossover is a quality item using premium Mylar capacitors and air-core inductors. Tweeter adjustability extends to three positions and there’s a useful two position midrange level control. Tweeter protection is provided by Polyswitches. Celsus 01202 664 390 www.celsusice.co.uk

Kenwood Excelon series The popular 170mm KFC-X1730P two-way compo will handle in excess of 300 Watts peak. It features an advanced speaker cone material, a new carbonpolypropylene hybrid fibre which combines glass fibre and heat-resistant Nomex material. More top materials for the 25mm tweeter (which has a swivel mounting), this has a treated silk dome which normally offers a smooth detailed sound. Kenwood mentions that the X series speakers offer a new design of magnetic circuit that uses less steel, which is claimed to result in less distortion. Sensitivity is comparably low at 86dB/W/m. The chassis is well built and the 17cm unit is quite deep at 58mm and the tweeter is suitable for flush or surface mounting. The crossover box is reasonably compact and uses a Zobel network circuit for the woofer. The crossover frequency is 6kHz and it features a three-position tweeter attenuator with a protection circuit. COMPONENT SPEAKERS | Kicker RS-Series The RS offers customers good value, offering as it does, most of the technology of more expensive QS-Series Systems. Component systems include the popular The RS65.2 featuring a 6.5 inch woofer and RS60.2 which is a true six inch midrange that also fits 5.25-inch location. Construction is robust with a cast aluminum chassis with nickel-plated, sprung-loaded terminals. The woofer cone’s voice coil is copper-clad aluminum wire on a polyimide former, helping it to achieve peak power handling of over 200 Watts. The RS system uses a 25mm tweeter with advanced DuPont Tetoron elliptical domes which offers a wide dispersion pattern for greatly increased high frequency detail. These can be installed in a flush, angled, surface, or coaxial mount, the latter allowing the installer to remove aluminum phase plugs from the centres and screw-in special adapters and the tweeters. The chassis has a mounting depth of 62mm. The RS-Series gets redesigned crossovers with two-way biampable system having an 18 dB/octave high pass and 12 dB/octave low pass filters with a 3.5kHz crossover point. A tweeter output-level switch offers 0dB, +3dB, +6dB steps. Good protection is offered, and it includes ‘incandescent protection’ (a bulb!). Distributed by Armour Auto 0800 7839125 www.armourauto.com

Vibe Space 3D

Macrom The Macrom brand became very low profile in the UK for quite some time but products under this name have reappeared looking shiny and new. Although the woofer seems to have been revamped, the same tweeter appears to be present – a unit known for its smoothness and resolution. The woofer’s die-cast aluminium chassis has a suitably slim edge for easy installation but does have an installation depth of 66mm. The cone is an aluminium-coated polypropylene type with a 25mm voice coil and barium ferrite magnet supplying the motive power. In 160mm, M2S.61 model form, it will handle in excess of 200W. The one inch tweeter has a neodymium magnet and appears to have a cloth dome which should be a further guarantee of a smooth response. A moderately-sized screw terminal crossover box has a 12 dB/octave slope and Macrom states that it has a PTC protection circuit. Distributed by Faster Than Sound 0161 7370355 www.fasterthansound.eu

The Space 3D package is a three-way system with arresting looks and an unusual choice of mounting systems. The mid-range and tweeter can be used with a dispersion plate supplied, allowing the tweeter to be stacked on top of the mid-range driver which Vibe claims to deliver a three dimensional ‘diffused’ sound. Simon Partleton of Mill Autoquip based in St Austell, Cornwall, thinks that the Space 3D is an excellent attention-grabber as customers walk into the shop. He said: “We keep the whole range of Vibe speakers but the 3Ds are the things they see first. They sell well and sound amazing and they can turn any vehicle into a mini show-car. “We’ve done installations where customers have gone for the stacked tweeter which is a bit different, also the crossover on show looks good. We have recently installed a system – complete with exposed crossover – in a VW T5 Transporter. The customer loves it. “We are busy building a Citroen C2 show car for the coming season. We haven’t decided where we are going with it but one of them will probably be Trax.”The 42mm Space 3D mid unit has the same 0.15mm aluminum cone material as the woofer for integration between drivers. These combined with the 20mm silk super-tweeter offers frequency response of up to 35Kz. The large circular crossover with its clear cover looks good and is a natural for external mounting. It has a 12dB per octave slope and there is scope for tweeter level adjustment with variable attenuation. Power handling of both the five and six inch versions is excellent and reviews have been good. The Space 3D was presented with the Stereowise Plus Editor’s Choice Award at CES 2011. NEW TOMTOM PRODUCT

PROFIT TOMTOM PROFESSIONAL FIT FROM

Given the choice, sat nav users with suckers on the windscreen and trailing wires would settle for something better. TomTom has just provided something better.. the Professional Fit tidy wiring solution only available for the specialist channels

This is everything your customers love about TomTom, but without the wires. TomTom has come up with its Pro range of sat nav models and an iPhone cradle with fittings specifically designed to be mounted on Brodit and Dashmount ‘no-holes’ brackets already widely used in the trade.

A chance to profit from all the convenience and the tidiness of a premium integrated navigation system and delight customers by magnetic mounting on their TomTom VIA

The magnetic mounting base of the Professional Fit system with its hidden wiring is a simple solution for the customer TomTom’s iPhone Pro kit provides a cable-messfree answer for the Apple devotee

T

he TomTom Professional Fit solution provides all the convenience and the tidiness of a premium integrated navigation system without the premium price tag. Best of all, it offers something that can’t be directly provided by the big electronic sales chains. The TomTom Pro range will be available in March from CEL TRADE to specialist automotive channels. Sat nav products offered will be the TomTom VIA models, Go 1000 range and the iPhone cradle. The system takes full advantage of car specific, customised semi-permanent mounting kits offering better viewing and closer reach with limited dashboard dismantling and no damage to the car’s interior. It charges the sat nav or phone with no messy wiring trailing across the dash and can be installed in a variety of positions to suit the customer, either on the dash top or front, or to the right on the dash or using an ‘A’ post clip. The professional installation product associated with the VIA range includes, as with the other models, the slim charging cable and inbuilt adaptor for installation behind or around the dashboard, but usefully it utilises the same magnetic mount as the Go 1000/5 range models. This serves to convert it to GO 1000-style magnetic mounting – probably the best in the business The bottom line is a fitted solution not available from the Argos and the Amazons of this world and is calculated to surprise and delight customers with its usefulness to create a unique profit opportunity for dealers to offer a professional installation.

Bury System 9 Basically the System 9 is a stripped-down, charging-only version of Bury’s famous UNI System 8. The product comes in two parts, a base plate with power and antenna connection and a detachable System 9 charging cradle. The base unit is simply installed into the vehicle as a standard system 8 would be. The customer can then connect any of Bury’s system 9 cradles to the base plate. This part of the operation doesn’t require an engineer and takes only moment to perform. This results in the system 9 being the perfect solution for those with multiple handsets. |PHONE CRADLES

Car Dock for iPhone

From Dension, it’s a custom-designed cradle in which will fit iPhone 3, 3GS and 4, and combined with the ‘Car Dock’ application (available from iTunes App Store), it turns the iPhone into the control centre for the users in-car communication and entertainment needs. It connects to the car audio system via a 3.5mm Aux cable, or wirelessly via the built in FM modulator to play music and phone calls through the car’s speakers. The builtin microphone for hands-free keeps cabling down to a minimum. Power is taken from the car via the 12V adaptor, but if the car ignition is turned off while the iPhone is in use, it reverts to its own battery to ensure the call is not interrupted. The cradle can be adjusted to the optimum position for the application in use, usually horizontal for navigation and vertical for phonebook. The Car Dock app makes using the phone in the vehicle extremely easy, with big touch screen icons to guide the user. Dension 01494 898951 www.dension.com

SCORPION

|SCORPION TRACK

LAUNCH SUCCESS Record dealer attendances to Scorpion Track open days confirms trade interest in this all-new tracking product An intensive programme of open days from the beginning of this year demonstrating Scorpion Track and the Sigma S35 CANBUS alarm unit has introduced hundreds of specialists to these new products which are now being shipped. Suggested retail pricing on the latest product Scorpion Track, has been announced at £299 including VAT for the unit plus installation cost and the lowest UK subscription cost of either £130 per year, or £350 for the duration of ownership installed on the original vehicle. Customer benefits included in the subscription include European coverage, unlimited on-demand position requests and a 5 year warranty. The regional launches have covered Bristol, Birmingham, London and Glasgow, to name but a few areas, and MEN visited one of the star open days at Scorpion’s headquarters in Chorley, Lancashire.

The most impressive thing was the fact that it’s Britishmade and the quality control seems to be excellent.” The event kicked off at 10am giving enough time for invitees to make the journey, coming from as far away that day as Anglesey and Corby. Presentations from Head of Sales and Marketing, Gary Kirby and National Sales Manager Richard Andrews included a company overview and a full description of Scorpion Track followed by a general portfolio overview which included the Sigma S35 CANBUS alarm unit. This was followed by an introductory talk and a tour of the facilities conducted by Managing Director Mark Downing, which took in the Scorpion Track monitoring room and the production areas where the Scorpion Track and

the Sigma S35 are manufactured. Installers were also interested to see the automatic custom fitting loom Dealers take time out to meet the Scorpion team. National Sales Manager Richard manufacturing Andrews and Head of Sales and Marketing, Gary Kirby presented a company and facilities – many of product overview followed up by a manufacturing plant tour by MD, Mark Downing. them recognising parts of the looms being constructed as wiring they handle on a regular basis. During the tour, Mark mentioned a few of the many extra features which are available on the Scorpion Track unit such as a fuel level alert for static and mobile plant and optional text-messaging to customers to inform them of a vehicle’s low battery level.

Installer opinion Adrian Hetherington of Anglesey Auto Alarms saw the products and manufacturing at Chorley and was suitably impressed. He said: “The tracking unit is nice and very easy to install being small and only two thin leads to hook up – these should be easy to pull through. “I think it’s important that they keep the subscription at the same level which is reasonable at the moment. The most impressive thing was the fact that it’s British-made and the quality control seems to be excellent.” Barry Gough of The Fraser Marketing Group has already ordered a first batch of Scorpion Track units for distribution and also for his installation company Avveco. “I have seen the product during its development,” said Barry, “and it has exceeded my expectations. It is an excellent concept and I think that the target of 14 seconds to go live is particularly good.”

Fast registration The biggest dealer criticism of some tracking systems has been against tedious registration procedures with examples of grindingly-slow processing. Scorpion has set out to make registration as painless

MD Mark Downing (left) shows installers the state-of-the-art production facilities

as possible by supplying a personal web account to each dealer which works in conjunction with configuration text notification avoiding any necessity for any lengthy telephone calls by installers. Once the simple procedure is complete, an install certificate pops up on the web site for the customer who also has an individual on-line account enabling them access to vehicle, contact and location details. Dealers who have used the system have expressed surprise at how quickly it works with configurations as quickly as 4 seconds from power-up to txt confirmation reported. The next open day and presentation at Scorpion’s Chorley location is on April 6. M.E.N EXPO GUIDE

M.E.N EXPO

GUIDE

2011 ALPINE

Who’s coming to the premier trade-only show for our industry and what you can expect to see from them There’s not long to go now until the Connects2 sponsored 2011 M.E.N Expo, the event taking place over two days on the 15th and 16th March at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena. The line-up for this year looks set to be the best yet; a reversion to a trade-only format, the stunning location and the ICE Heroes evening should all make it an event not to miss. It’s the UK industry’s favourite place to launch new products into the market and get feedback, and an event where they will be doing their best to attract new dealers too. Attending could be one of the best moves you make for your business this year, and to whet your appetites, here’s a small taster of what just a few of the confirmed exhibitors will have on show.

34

www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

Alpine will be showcasing their 2011 range of Car Audio, AV and Navigation products, along with two demo cars, including their latest VW Passat CC show car and their latest demo car from Europe - the Infiniti! Alpine will also be offering dealers the chance of a sneaky peak at some brand new products due later in the year; a dangerously high-end single DIN pop out (IVA-D800R) and new digital processor (PXA-H800 and controller) to challenge the best possible sound and processing products out there. Also, it’s just possible that there will be a sneak preview of a very high-end and innovative AV/ Navigation unit to complement the INE-S900R, so watch this space... They will also show the brand new CDE-123R, aimed at a sub £200 price point. This unit is the first of Alpine`s new Smartphone “Link” units that is also Bluetooth ready via KCE-250BT. This concept follows on from the company’s pioneering and unique position on iPod connectivity, when everyone else said “it won`t catch on”, it is designed to work with many other Smartphones, in the same way as we are used to iPod connectivity. Alpine`s commitment to “Terminal Mode” technology really does link Smartphone to your car infotainment systems. Check it out and find out if your phone, or portable music player makes the connection, on the Alpine stand. Other products on show will be the latest Bluetooth CD Tuners, CDE-125BT and CDE-126BT with great phone compatibility and iPod connectivity, as well as their new entry-level unit, CDE-120R and CDE-120RM aimed at the sub £100 retail price point. Alpine`s new PDX amps stand up to any comparison and now this design and technology has “trickled down” to their new range of MRX amps including Mono, 2 Channel, 4/3/2 Channel and 5 Channel options, as showcased in Alpine America`s 2011 Camaro Demo Car at CES in January. Offering fantastic power and performance for the money, expect to see them making a name for themselves soon. As well as those already mentioned will be new SPR speakers and amazing new SWR-T10 and SWR-T12 very shallow, Type R subs. amplifiers and woofers to a broad selection encompassing CD/DVD/ MP3 players, seven amplifier lines, seven speaker lines and much, much more. The products are developed in the Netherlands by Caliber’s own experienced audio designers and then manufactured in certified factories in the Far East under close scrutiny of Caliber quality assurance personnel. This formula has been a success since the start, giving you the dual benefit of high-quality European design and cost-effective manufacturing – without compromising quality or performance If you want find out how to make good money again on a great entrylevel head unit , amplifier, subs, and speaker line, then this presentation is a must-see event.

EXCITING

NEW PRODUCTS FOR EXPO SHOW

DAB is the word which is creating excitement, not least for its profit-making opportunities. The Connects2 stand is a ‘must-see’ to discover a range of patented solutions for the DAB market. They include integrated DAB and steering wheel control interfaces with hideaway boxes enabling users to tune into DAB with both aftermarket and OE radios. The importance of this subject has lead Connects2 to enlist the services of Alpine Electronic’s former Sales Director, Graham Johnson. Dealers will have a chance to meet Graham and discuss DAB topics at the cocktail bar in the Connects2 meeting room. Michael Carter from Motorola will also be putting in an appearance to talk about their integrated kits.

Other Connects2 attractions at the Show will be a Sumo wrestling ring – presumably where sales rivals can battle it out, and new product launches including a range of BEAT items featuring a DAB portable model and an in-dash CD tuner, plus BEAT speakers and lots more.

player, plus USB and SD card inputs It will be selling at just £49.00 to the trade.

Other players being introduced include a BEAT portable DVD player (PBT7DVD). It has all the usual features you would expect from a DVD

Also on show will be the BEAT range of speakers which are now in stock – these include a range of custom fit speakers at prices to allow dealers to make excellent margins.

New BEAT 485 in-dash CD DAB tuner Connects2 are launching their new Beat DAB head unit at the show – the BEAT 485. A DAB equipped CD tuner, thoroughly modern, with a black finish and a green display panel. It also features conventional FM tuning, USB, AUX-In and SD memory card input on the front.

The new BEAT 400 portable DAB tuner The BEAT 400 portable DAB unit is a great hassle-free way of introducing your customers to hundreds of stations that cannot be heard on the old FM stereo band such as 6 Music, Radio 1Xtra and 5 Live to name but a few. The 400 portable has a lead which plugs into a vehicle’s 12 volt socket. It interacts with the customers’ existing head unit by transmitting DAB broadcasts in FM stereo to the car’s tuner. With a suction bracket supplied, it’s very simple to install and initialise - a great product for the person that wants DAB programmes but doesn’t want to go to all the hassle of changing the head unit.

VAUXHALL ASTRA

Connects2 development engineers are constantly striving to produce market first interfaces, a prime example being the head unit replacement interface for the new Vauxhall Astra. CAN-Bus interfaces have also been developed for front and rear parking sensors (CAN-03) and for increasingly popular daytime running lights (CAN-04). On display at the EXPO will be a VW with a Motorola TK30 Bluetooth kit fully integrated with the vehicles steering wheel controls and display. There will also be a new Vauxhall Astra fitted with an aftermarket head unit using a Connects2 head unit replacement kit. For dealers looking for new opportunities and to diversify their ranges, Connects2 is launching the ‘Connected’ Home Audio range. These home audio accessories are very competitively priced and include a range of HDMI leads, Scart, RCA, component video and fibre optic cable. Visitors to the stand will also be able to find out about an exciting new dealer application and will be able to discuss a proposal of new PoS material to save on stocking costs. All this, plus the new Connects2 catalogue, will be available at the Show.

|SOURCE SOUNDS

DOWN AT THE DEALER

SOURCE SOUNDS SHEFFIELD Paul Ellis of Source Sounds spills the beans to the new Ed, Martyn Williams

We always try to think ahead about what we should be doing and don’t try to become our rivals our philosophy to cater for people who often have had bad experiences in the past and have become happy with ‘okay’ – I always bear in mind that nothing I sell do they have to buy.” The question of a tougher economic climate was put to Paul – how are you coping? “We have reduced our staff over the years which used to be nine-strong but luckily this has been natural wastage with a few people doing other things which, thankfully, meant I have not had to lay anyone off. When things get tough we need to work harder to generate sales and advertising needs a broader scope. We are working to improve our website for instance and we are constantly

looking at different areas where we might pick up customers. I don’t think it’s a good idea to reduce advertising when times are hard.” So, I asked Paul the big question, what do think about the future? “We all know there’s lots of doom and gloom out there but luckily I’m a glass half full kind of a guy. “Cars are getting harder to work on which is why we invest in data-reading equipment and anything necessary to get jobs done properly. Luckily its rare to find an OEM system that even gets close to the quality of custom audio. “I see an aftermarket which largely doesn’t seem to react to changes – I’m still excited by the challenge of modern cars. “If we ever turned a car away for being too technical, that would be a sad day for Source Sounds.” Contact: Source Sounds 0114 2571550, www.sourcecars.com

supplies equipment – this was another important building block of the business. “We always try to think ahead about what we should be doing and don’t try to become our rivals. We want to be the ‘go to’ guys in the area and, over the years, this has worked.” Paul re ns that reputations are earned by reducing the chance of come-backs and this involves rechecking wiring as the job progresses and followed by simple checks when the job is complete. “We always run a proper sound check using a source, usually a CD, which tests the phase and the channels.” Just as important as testing the finished work, is handing the vehicle over to the customer. “We explain what has been done to give the person an insight into the system,” said Paul, “And then take them through all the control features so they know its capabilities. This is all part of the service which helps us to exceed their expectations. It’s

If there’s anything that should inspire the world of independent specialists, it has to be Paul Ellis and his team at Source Sounds in Sheffield. Source is based in Chapeltown, and the location could hardly be better - it’s just a spit from a junction on the M1, has parking for about 100 cars and is on a patrolled industrial estate. I had only been there a few minutes when an excellent cup of tea was duly served by Steven, Sources apprentice trainee. The other members of the Source team are expert installer Trevor whose specialist subject is fabrication, the equally-expert Chris who does security as well as audio, and crack salesman Lee who specialises in helping customers decide what they want based on his massive knowledge of audio equipment founded on his pro and expert sound-off competition experience. Source as a shop was established in 1995 after Paul had finally been rumbled by the local council for trading out of a lock-up for a couple of years at his home. His full time job at the time was in engineering and the company had a day-release college policy. Paul ‘aced it’ through technical college and as he says, “The knowledge bug bit” and he went on to do City & Guilds courses on auto electrics and related subjects. With this background, Paul had made a simple decision: “I was looking at two ways of doing business as I see it. There is the ‘stack ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap’ approach, verses the technical sell. “I went for the technical side of the business and in this area – we don’t do on-line selling for example. The number one priority from the start was to offer top customer service and a level of expertise beyond that offered by potential rivals. Just as important at the start was to examine the potential customer base and think about how we could do things differently. “Having started fitting stuff for customers from home, I have learnt all the aspects of pricing labour based on whether we, or the customer

RAYNER RANTS Adam Rayner rrecalls EXPOs of the past, with curse-bellowing bosses and flamboyantly gay barmen……. I’m kinda post-post modern, so I can both nurture, cherish and respect (and adore) women, whilst also accepting equality of pay and opportunity. INdustry personality

MARTYN WILLIAMS MEN’s crack investigative journalist Arthur Deebie grilles the M.E.N magazine’s new editor. He asks, who the hell are you and where do you come from?

The mobile electronics industry has its share of immature petrolheads, often with a passion for music and fast cars. Martyn Williams is typical of this breed having started as a motoring journalist interested in music, got involved with reviewing both mobile and domestic audio. Opinions from those who know him range from ‘nerd’ to ‘mentalist’ but ultimately, who can doubt his genuine interest in everything to do with mobile electronics? What is your proudest professional achievement so far?
