ou’ve been to Thailand, you’ve got a few guidebooks picking up dust at home, and you can always browse TripAdvisor.com during your lunch break—do you really need a new guide to Thailand? We didn’t think so. What you do need is a Thai friend. Someone who can recommend places with soul and flavor, the places he or she will take you to if you come visit, the places locals hang out at or travel to when escaping the Big Mango for the weekend. That’s what Hot Spots is all about. Written by the Bangkok office of Asia City Media Group, this is where we go for real Thai food, mad nights out, affordable design and shopping with a difference. It’s not for tourists; it’s for friends, like you. So, come on, pack your bag and book that flight, we’ve got the rest all figured out.

BANGKOK DO/SEE Ratchada Night Market An abandoned open-air space, first occupied by classic car fanatics, has today become one of Bangkok’s most bustling night markets. Treasure hunters come to browse the eclectic selection of used clothes, shoes, cars and motorbikes as well as rummage for rare collectibles and antiques.
At both ends you can find food stalls offering everything from deep fried dumplings and sushi to iced tea and cocktails. Though the market now opens from Friday to Sunday, Saturday is still the liveliest night. • Ratchada-Ladprao Intersection. MRT Ladprao. Open Fri-Sun, 7pm-2am.
Suan Pakkad Palace It’s less famous than Jim Thomspon’s former home but at least Suan Pakkad boasts royal Thai lineage. The eight-house complex once belonged to Prince and Princess Chumbhot of Nagara Svarga. These wooden Thai-style houses showcase ancient sculptures, furniture, and traditional instruments from the Rama V period. There’s also an exhibition on the Baan Chiang prehistoric site in the new wing. • 352-354 Sri Ayudhya Rd., +66(0)2246-1775/6 ext 229. BTS Phaya Thai. Open daily 9am-4pm. Segway Tour
Shop Thai
There’s no need to visit the Grand Palace and Wat Pho the conventional old fashioned way, you know, on foot. Get a different perspective on the main attractions of Rattanakosin Island with a Segway tour. These electric two-wheelers are surprisingly fun (and easy) to ride as you zoom around Old Bangkok while the experienced guide points out the countless places of interest.
In the massive complex of malls surrounding BTS Siam, you’ll find a lot of international brands just like the ones you have at home. But if you want to buy Thai then head to Siam Center, where you’ll find local designers like our favorites Greyhound, Senada and Tipayapong on its third floor. Looking for furniture? Pick up some rough-hewn pieces from architectural wunderkind Duangrit Bunnag’s Anyroom next door, on Siam Discovery’s fourth floor. Done with air con? Hit the streets opposite Siam Paragon, the area better known as Siam Square. It’s a fave with students and is home to countless unique boutiques like

EAT Krua Apsorn
traditionally dressed staff will tone it down if asked. There’s also Lao/ Isaan music and folk dance shows nightly around the central tree but the food is key here: the somtam puu plara (sour spicy mango salad with fermented fish), larb moo (spicy minced pork salad) and tom saep (spicy sour soup) are a must. • 8 Sukhumvit Soi 36, +66(0)-22586171, +66(0)-2661-2311. Bo.Lan Krua Apsorn Krua Apsorn won’t win any awards for style, but this two shophouse-wide eatery more than makes up for its plain interior with recipes that have been handed down over decades. The stir-fried plump mussels with basil leaves, stir-fried crabmeat with yellow chilies and the spicy Southern-style yellow curry with crisp lotus stems never fail to impress. These three must-haves, especially the pungent curry soup, run out fast, so show up early to avoid disappointment.
Opened this year and run by a former sous-chef from David Thompson’s famous London restaurant Nahm, Bo-Lan offers traditional Thai food presented in a contemporary style. The elegant dining room, all dark woods, follows a traditional Thai theme with the ceilings covered with kradong (flat baskets). Emphasizing seasonal products, the menu changes regularly, but we suggest opting for the Bo.lan Balance, a degustation menu featuring a blend of different

Le Dalat Considering they are nearly neighbors, it is perhaps surprising that there aren’t more good Vietnamese restaurants in Bangkok. But this eatery, with its emphasis on Royal Vietnamese cuisine and its beautiful setting within a charming old colonialstyle wooden residence, is certainly one of the best. Let the team of impeccable waiters guide you through the comprehensive menu, which includes classics like pho, bánh cun and chao tom. It’s not cheap but it’s worth it to enjoy this little slice of Indochine. •14 Sukhumvit Soi 23, +66(0)-22617967/8. Open daily 11:30am2:30pm, 6:30-10pm. www. ledalatindochinebkk.com.

11 Gallery Restaurant Set in a traditional old Thai building just off from the hustle and bustle of Sukhumvit, this
restaurant is a charming surprise in the heart of the city. The quaint two-story wooden structure, which also doubles as a guesthouse and a spa, is worth a visit alone. Fortunately, the food, which comes served in quaint pinto boxes, is equally authentic. With a focus on simple classic dishes like tom kha gai (coconut milk soup with chicken), tod mun goong (deepfried shrimp cakes) and somtam, it makes for a perfect introduction to Thai cuisine. • Suk 11 complex, 1/34 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 02-651-2672. Fake Club
Fake Club Although it’s a gay venue, Fake Club opens its arms to anyone looking to have a fun time with their friends. The posh glowing purple and lusty red d cor is guaranteed to turn everyone’s head. Step inside for a potent dose of international hits and remixes that everyone seems to know the words to. The drink menu is nothing to get excited about as it seems to aim exclusively at the usual whiskey-guzzling uni students and mid-twenties first-jobbers. However, it’s the friendly, nonattitude vibe that keeps people coming back. • Or Tor Kor, Kampangpetch Rd., +66(0)8-9479-9262. Open daily 9pm-2am.
The Face Apart from its famous Indian food, the Bangkok branch of the global Face Bar is also known as one of the best cocktail spots in town—we highly recommend their mojito. Set in a beautiful Thai building, the interior mix of pinks, gold and oversized wood furniture makes you feel like you’re entering a maharaja’s secret naughty room. There is also a pool table to screw some balls while your friends spoon each other on one of the comfy sofas. It’s five star standards and service all the way, so expect prices to match. If you don’t like the cocktails, there’s an extensive wine list. • 29 Sukhumvit Soi 38, +66(0)2713-6048. Open daily Tue-Sun 611pm. www.facebars.com.
Ad Here the 13th Live music is the reason that you escape from the backpackers of Khao San and make the relatively short walk to this place, and specifically blues music. A narrow little glass shophouse facade conceals an equally tiny space that’s crammed with bric-a-brac. Walls seem to be filled with everything from legendary album covers to postcards and money. Somehow, they also manage to squeeze in a few plastic tables and chairs, a bar, some drums and a couple of amps, as various local and international artists head down to join in the jam. Hot, sweaty
and definitely different, this is the place to soak up some serious blues. • 13 Samsen Rd., Banglamphu +66(0)8-9769-4613, +66(0)81456-9513. Open Mon-Sun 6pmmidnight.
Demo Recently opened, this once abandoned-apartment-turnednightclub in the heart of town might seem a little bit creepy/ creaky from the outside but it’s currently packing them in. Inside, graffiti art and high ceilings give it a New York underground pub mood and tone. The strictly no live music policy from talented local DJs and international artists like Hong from Zouk to John OO Fleming breaks new ground for this part of town and brings in a more discerning crowd. The selection of drinks matches these expectations with a comprehensive pick of premium products. Our recommendation? Try the signature Pink Pussy. • Thonglor Soi 10. +66(0)-26610900. Open daily 8pm-2am.

Madame Green Jae Keao
A fish lovers’ heaven, Platoo, named after the Thai word for mackerel, whips up a wide list of fish dishes from salt-coated grilled sea bass to deep-fried grouper with three-flavored sauce. But it is the platoo that’s the real highlight, served as either delicious tom yam soup or stir-fried with chili paste.
Situated in a pale-green colonial mansion on a calm beach with a beautiful garden, You Yen gives off plenty of nostalgic charm. PHUKET DO/SEE Baba Culture The founders of Phuket Town formed a very special community, the Baba. Their culture was dying a slow death until a recent surge of interest prompted a series of cultural events and timely architectural renovations. If you’re interested in visiting, a good heritage map has finally been produced, The Phuket Town Treasure Map. Pick it up at the TAT Office. Otherwise, a simple walk down Krabi, Thalang and Dibuk streets will give you a glimpse of many cute cafes and shops. • TAT Office, 191 Thalang Rd., +66(0)-7621-2213.

Diving A trip to Phuket wouldn’t be complete without some diving, as the surrounding sea has some of the world’s best dives. Koh Racha, Koh Hae, Anemone Reef and Shark Point are some of the star spots. Koh Hae, in the south of Phuket, is popular because the coral reefs are situated close to the shoreline. Anemone Reef and Shark Point are two pinnacles situated between Phuket and Phi Phi island, known for their abundant marine life and the opportunity to see the majestic whale sharks and manta rays. To get you there, we recommend H2O Sportz (www. diveh2osportz.com).
Freedom Beach Freedom beach can only be accessed by longtail boat, there isn’t a single resort there and it feels wonderfully secluded. Despite no longer being a complete secret, expensive boat transfers (B1,000-2,000 from Patong Beach) are still a barrier to the bulk of the crowds. The clear blue waters and white sand make it all worth the effort.
Golf Course Phuket is really a golfers dream, thanks to its choice of seven world-class courses. Try your luck at the Championship Course at Blue Canyon (www.bluecanyonclub.com), tackle the challenging undulations of Red Mountain (www.redmountainphuket.com) or test yourself with the beach bunkers of the Jack Nicklaus designed Mission Hills Phuket (www.missionhillsphuket.com).

This sprawling complex was originally a tin mine, but has been transformed into 1,000 acres of tropical parkland dotted with lagoons and canals and its own international standard golf course. While there are actually six resorts onsite, the highlights have to be the extensive pool at the Sheraton Grande, the water park at Laguna Beach Resort, the spa at the Banyan Tree Resort and the family villas at the Dusit Thani. Add in 3kms of beautiful and relatively quiet beach, the golf course and a shopping street and the admittedly isolated location doesn’t have to be an issue. Rates start from B1,600.
