THE SOLUTION FOR THE COLD SEASON WHY YOU SHOULD DRESS IN LAYERS!
HAVE A SAFE DAY – visibility is safety during the winter months
2
Workwear isn’t what it used to be, luckily! Over the years, it has become much more advanced and functional. And this also applies to your workwear for the cold season.
As it does every year, the cold chilly season is coming, with dark mornings and afternoons, and more rain, wind and cold. All of this mixed with the occasional warm days. So, how should you dress in order to avoid getting either sweaty or cold, and to keep the wind from passing right through your clothes? Dress in layers! And do it by counting to three when you dress for your workday. In this way you can ensure a comfortable regulation of your body temperature throughout the winter:
Stay dry Keep warm Protect against the weather By combining your clothes according to the layer-on-layer method, you can demand everything from your workwear. Regardless of temperatures or precipitation. Your workwear will withstand the surroundings, allowing you to do your job – efficiently, without restrictions, and at exactly the pace your work demands.

and work comfortably throughout the winter Maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the winter doesn’t mean that you should choose the thickest jacket you can find. The temperature and weather shifts during the day and through the season. You should dress in thin, functional layers, so it will be easy for you to remove a layer when the temperature rises, or pull on a waterproof jacket if a shower emerges.

LAYER 1 – Stay dry The clothes that you wear closest to the skin must have a strong ability to absorb moisture, transfer it away from the body and distribute it to a larger area to allow the moisture to evaporate quickly.
LAYER 2 – Keep warm The middle layer should be insulating and breathable. When it’s colder, you can pull on several thin insulating layers.
LAYER 3 – Protect against the weather The outer layer should be breathable to allow moisture from the body to escape. In addition, it should be windproof and waterproof/water-repellent.

Stay dry, warm and protected against the weather How many layers do you need?
In the autumn, two layers are often enough: a moisture wicking layer and one or more insulating layers. As the second layer, an insulating and water-repellent knitted jacket or softshell is the perfect choice and it acts as a perfect mid layer, when the weather is at its worst and you find it necessary to wear a wind and waterproof jacket as the outer layer.

Underwear with extra functions Remember, you can optimise your work day by choosing the right type of underwear. Your underwear’s most important function is the right combination of moisture wicking and insulating properties.
Superb stretch with effective moisture wicking COOLMAX® ALL SEASON has unique properties when worn as the innermost layer next to the skin. A particular advantage is that the material is insulating when it’s cold and cooling when it’s hot. The multi-stretch fabric fits closely to the body which makes it flexible and extremely comfortable to wear. The fabric dries quickly.

Stay warm and dry when it’s cold Thermax® is an insulating triple layered material. The fabric is designed for use in very low temperatures. It is designed so that the inner polyester layer channels moisture away from the body out to the cotton and modal fibres, so your skin always feels dry. The outer layer of the fabric is insulating to help keep the heat in.

Insulating middle layer Your middle layer should keep you warm. How many layers you need depends on the temperature and your level of activity. Popular middle layers are fleece jumpers, thermal jackets, knitted jumpers and sweatshirts. If you aren’t exposed to rain during your work day, a combination of several effective insulating layers is often enough. In such case, you might add a windproof outer layer.

Wind and waterproof outerwear The outer layer has to protect you against the weather with wind and waterproof properties. But you should also remember breathability. High breathability is important to keep warm. If you cannot get rid of the moisture, you will get wet and then cold. To achieve extra protection against the cold, we recommend that you choose a jacket with an extended back, (detachable) hood and close-fitting wrist to protect against cold winds.

What makes it a good work day?
We asked some carpenters for their opinions, and they’ve also weighed in on the winter jackets they use.
Tobias, apprentice carpenter »I’ve always dreamed of becoming self-employed. I want to accomplish something, be active and love my job all year round. But when it’s cold outside, I dream about working on a roof on a hot summer day with full sun!« »My jacket is really flexible and I especially like that it feels very lightweight. It’s also very warm. I work in minus 10-12°C, which, with the wind, feels like minus 20°C, and I can easily keep warm.«
Nicolai, carpenter »In general, I like varying tasks, but I also like days when I accomplish a lot, and when I can see the results of my work. For example, when I’m changing the windows in a single-family house.« »When it’s really cold, the jacket has to protect in many places. In this winter jacket, I especially like the extended back. It keeps the cold air from getting in when I bend forward.«

Dress in layers Jacob, carpenter »A good day is definitely a summer day with a lot of projects and cool tasks, where I can see something happening. The job as a carpenter is just more fun when it isn’t too cold.« »This jacket is made with the same great material as my stretch trousers and it’s also wind and waterproof. I work outside on tasks where I have my hands up most of the time. For this work, the jacket has a really good fit and the sleeves stay where they should, so I don’t have 30 centimetres of bare skin.«
17035-411-09 Winter Jacket with CLIMASCOT®, waterproof 87% polyamide/13% elastane - 200 g/m²
Andreas, carpenter »I really love old-school carpentry where you use your craft, so the best work day for me is a day with good weather, when I can put in windows or lay a roof. Classic carpentry at its best.« »This jacket is really easy to move in – it’s stretchy in all directions when you move. You almost forget you’re wearing it.«
Lars, carpenter »The best work day for me is when I lay on roof tiles in the sun. Working on the roof during summer is just special.« »I only use my winter jacket when the temperature is below freezing point. Otherwise a soft shell is fine for me. The winter jacket offers the extra protection against the cold that you need to keep warm.«

Dress in multiple layers As always, a moisture wicking inner layer and a windproof and waterproof outer layer are crucial when the cold bites. Between the two layers, insulating layers are necessary to keep warm. If the temperature suddenly changes – perhaps because you are cheering and celebrating – you can quickly adjust the numbers of layers.
Protect yourself from the wind At a stadium, it always feels like you’re standing directly in the wind; regardless of the wind’s direction. To protect yourself, choose windproof materials from head to toe so the wind can’t penetrate your clothing. With heavy winds it always feels colder than what the thermometer shows. The greater the wind speed, the greater the risk of cooling the body.
Keep warm with wool Choose products with wool, for example, when choosing socks and underwear. Wool is highly insulating because it stores the heat your body emits. As opposed to many other materials, wool keeps its insulating properties when it gets wet, and it can absorb a large portion of its own weight in liquid without feeling wet. You always feel dry even when you’re sweating.
Avoid getting wet Simply put, with damp clothes you’re sure to freeze. You can protect yourself against rain from the outside, with waterproof layers. But, you also need to remember to choose breathable products so you can get rid of the heat from the inside. Especially if you have a sudden increase in activity, like when your team scores! If you can’t get rid of moisture, it will cool your body when you stand still and in cold weather, this can be dangerous.
Cover your skin Hands and feet get cold faster than the rest of the body because the blood flow in the hands and feet decreases when the body regulates the temperature. Therefore, remember gloves and socks of highly insulating materials. You can of course also get warm hands when applauding your team (or just by moving). Also remember the hood and maybe a good neck warmer. Bare skin will allow body heat to escape and make the whole body cooler.
20
Keep warm – everywhere When you are working outdoors, sometimes you don’t move as much as you normally would. This also applies after work, when you’re a spectator at a game, for example. Regardless of whether it’s your child’s dream-team or the leading local sports club you’re cheering for, you want to be warm.

At work in all kinds of weather Through the years, MASCOT has sent workwear to work all over the world in order to thoroughly test the clothing – even in extreme conditions and situations. And that is exactly the situation when Centre Terre sends an expedition off to one of the world’s most remote corners. The clothing will truly be put to the test.
Extreme winds and heavy rain
What should the clothes be able to withstand on such an expedition? Durability is of course important as the untouched landscapes in Patagonia, located more than 24 hours by boat from the closest port, have a lot of sharp and rough surfaces. But most of all, the clothes have to protect the participants against the weather. And that’s not easy in a climate where the wind regularly reaches over 52 knots in a storm and can often reach hurricane strength with 97 knots. During the expedition, they often experience over 80 mm of rain a day, and approximately 700 mm rain in one month. The expedition area receives an average annual rainfall of 8000 mm.
22
When the storms rage it’s serious
The expedition is also about teamwork; not only for the work itself, but also when it comes to protecting each other in harsh surroundings. Building a base camp is hard work, partly because the materials have to be carried from the boats up to the campsite. »In order to alleviate some of the heavy lifting and the hard work days for the expeditioners, we decided to transport the heavy building materials up the mountain by using a small-scale cableway that I had built in advance. But, during the transport, we always had to pay attention to the wind, which could bring sudden gusts up to 120 km/h. The wind in Patagonia sets the agenda for the day. We noticed the power of the wind from day one. We had installed some very heady military tents to serve as shelters during the first weeks until the camp was ready, but already on the first night the wind had ripped them loose. After the next night, we found them blown a good distance away, and partially damaged. It was a good reminder of the wind’s power. We had to be very careful when handling and assembling the wood and polycarbonate building materials, and particularly the sharp metal plates, to ensure that they wouldn’t get caught in the wind. It takes strong teamwork
Dress in layers
and the great responsibility of caring for each other. Regardless of the strength of the wind, the human values of Madre de Dios are stronger than the storms.« Florian, trained car and boat mechanic, is currently working in the field of construction, specializing in workplaces that are difficult to access or at high heights. During the expedition his responsibility is to build up the base camp and repair machines and motors. Beyond this, he is also an experienced cave researcher and mountain climber.
and the water level started to rise. There was around 5 cm of water around me in the tent and my blanket soaked it like a sponge! It was a horrible night and early in the morning I asked to go back to the base camp. But when I awoke to the infinitely amazing limestone of Madre de Dios I immediately changed my mind. I didn’t mind sleeping with my wet blanket again – experiencing this is worth the pain!« Laurence, daily work: camera operator in sanitation, but also an educated speleologist
Rain and hail in huge amounts
On expedition with MASCOT
»My work during the expedition takes place outside in all hours of the day. In my day-to-day job, I work as a camera operator, leading a camera into sanitation pipelines to check their condition, and therefore I am used to working outside in all kinds of European weather. But the weather during the expedition is far more extreme. The weather has huge consequences for us. One time I was with four others on the way to an advanced camp, four days away from the main camp. When we arrived, we believed that the best place to set up camp was in a hole so the wind would pass over our tents. Unfortunately, it rained and hailed the whole night. The hail blocked our drainage holes
In 2017, MASCOT provided clothing for the team of cave researchers, geologists and biologists on their two-month long expedition, far from the nearest civilisation, in Patagonia, Chile. A large number of the researchers are also craftsmen in their day-to-day jobs. In January 2019, the group of about 50 people will head out again and once again, they’ll be testing MASCOT workwear under particular demanding conditions.

At work with Audi Sport and MASCOT The thermometer shows 30°C. With no wind, the heat from the machines and motors, and the hot asphalt of the pit just a few metres away, it feels even hotter. The mechanic lies on his back in the cramped space under the car. He’s in the process of dismantling an extremely heavy plate. Together with his colleague, he manages to easily get it out from under the car. A moment later, he’s in a squat, bent over the plate to adjust a few details before mounting the plate back under
26
the car. Quickly thereafter, he’s on to the next task – and the body will be challenged in yet another position. The pace is high because there are so many things to be tested, adjusted and fine-tuned before the mechanics are ready to send their driver out of the paddock onto the first training session at Hungaroring in the DTM race.
In each of the three Audi Sport pits, people are working on two Audi RS 5 DTM. The six Audi cars represent a third of the cars in the DTM. Mercedes and BMW have the same set-up, each with six cars for the in total 20 races with two races per weekend. The season runs from May to October over ten weekends in six different countries.
Freedom of movement
MASCOT is an official supplier of Audi Sport Both the team of mechanics and the other staff at Audi Sport in DTM and Formula E, are wearing MASCOT’s products. The clothing was selected with a special focus on freedom of movement and effective breathability. The cooperation began prior to the 2018 season.
27
The training session goes well. The initial nervousness is gone for both the drivers and the mechanics, and everybody prepares for the qualification. The car is back in the box and everything is checked. Again. They’ve done this many times before; muscle memory kicks in for the screws, nuts, bolts, tools. Then the driver is sent back on the track to get the best possible starting position for the actual race later that day. A couple of satisfied nods between the mechanics; the qualification went as planned. Now it’s time. Finally. The ultimate test of mechanics, knowledge, performance and technology. The intensity rises. Chit-chat between tasks is replaced with concentrated silence. The flame retardant clothing is pulled on again. And suddenly, you hear the deafening roar of 18 motors starting simultaneously! Earmuffs are
»Comfortable workwear is very important for us. We work a lot and are often under pressure in limited spaces. The clothing needs to support and help us in every move as we move around and under the car.« Werner, mechanic Audi Sport
28
imperative for everyone in the area. The race has begun! Now, they wait in the paddock for 55 intense minutes. Everything is followed on numerous screens, and even the smallest details are noticed. The team that will change the tyres are ready with helmets in their hands. The tyres are ready. And then the sign comes: one of the drivers will pull in for the mandatory tyre change on the next round. Helmets on. A few small jumps on the spot, maybe a few stretching exercises. Each has their own ritual to quickly get their body and brain ready for the crucial task. The team is in position under the baking sun and they wait. Some slightly bent over. Some with tyres in their hands. All are completely still. The car rolls in and stops precisely in the marked spot. Milliseconds count in the pit stop; a study of precision and timing. Each person has a specific task, and each movement is precisely timed in the narrow space. First one side of the car, then the other. The car is being lowered, and the moment it has contact with the asphalt, it’s full speed ahead. Back into the tight race. The team of mechanics move the clearly used tyres into the box, take their helmets off and wipe away sweat from their foreheads as they turn their eyes back to the screens. Everyone seems to be thinking: »Now bring it home so we can get on the podium!« And the driver does just that! In the celebration of high fives and hugs between the mechanics, a huge release is evident! The expectations have been met. The team has done their job to precision, in spite of the heat, the many hours working on the car and the extreme physical challenge. An excellent day at work!
Freedom of movement
»On the cars, it’s the little things that make the difference. It’s the same with the workwear. Most important is that it’s breathable, so you can work hard, quickly and accurately everywhere in hot conditions; like these days with 30°C in the box and pit.« Manuel, mechanic Audi Sport
29
The stretch revolution
Much has happened with work trousers over the last 15 years, particularly with regard to the fabrics. For many years, work trousers were stiff and heavy and their primary purpose was to provide protection. Since then, innovations in fabric development have made workwear lighter and more flexible. And now, the stretch revolution is upon us. MASCOT has launched a series of trousers of 100% four-way stretch that provide you with the freedom to move and nothing that tightens or bothers. The water-repellent multifunctional stretch material combines low weight with very high durability. The flexible material feels soft and comfortable – almost like a second skin.

Freedom of movement
Forget overheated knees. On the inseam at the knee you can open ventilation ducts that initiate airflow. On the side of the leg, via a zipper, you can easily remove the kneepads, even while wearing the trousers, so they aren’t keeping your knees warm unnecessarily.
The holster pockets in these trousers can easily be zipped off; a distinct advantage if you only use them occasionally. This means they can also be zipped off when the trousers need to be washed, so you avoid having to empty the holster pockets.
The kneepad pockets are made of the especially durable material CORDURA®. We recommend a flexible kneepad (for example MASCOT® Waterloo) for all stretch trousers with kneepad pockets in order to achieve optimum comfort.
The trousers have kneepad pockets in an elastic, durable lightweight material with Dyneema®. The trousers’ width can be adjusted at the foot with unobtrusive press studs.
Trousers without kneepad pockets or holster pockets, but with all the necessary pockets for storage: front pockets, back pockets, ruler pocket and thigh pocket.
The detachable holster pockets are made of durable CORDURA®, while the knee-pad pockets have increased flexibility through the help of a stretch material with Dyneema®. The trousers’ width can be adjusted with press studs at foot.

Choose lightweight, flexible shoes with an ergonomic fit In footwear, having a low weight and an easily bendable forefoot are important, so the foot doesn’t have to use extra strength in each step. Make sure that you buy the correct safety shoes. Here are four safe tips.

4
Check the safety class! Shoes labelled with S1P and S3 protect against sharp objects (nail protection) and against external blows and dropped objects (toe cap). Shoes with S3 are also water-repellent.
How should the shoe be closed? Consider Boa® closure if you repeatedly take your footwear on and off during a day. It is quick and easy to secure the footwear on the entire foot with the Boa® closure steel laces that evenly distribute the pressure on the instep.
The footwear’s width! When you choose footwear, you have to pay attention to the width as safety footwear come in different widths. Width 8 is typically suited for women, while men often use width 10 or 11.
Look at the sole! You have to make sure that you don’t slip. MASCOT’s footwear has the highest level within slip resistant properties, SRC. If you work on your knees, you should choose shoes where the sole material covers the outside of the upper material to increase durability.

Precision, pace and constant innovation Audi Sport and MASCOT have a clothing cooperation. The comprehensive Audi Sport team of mechanics, engineers and other staff in DTM are wearing MASCOT workwear. Lightweight products with optimal freedom of movement, due to stretch materials, have been chosen for the busy minutes, hours and days in the workshop and pit. In addition, products with a focus on comfort in warm environments have been chosen; for example the pit can be up to 35-40°C and therefore effective breathability and moisture wicking are crucial.

Innovation and technicalities
Audi RS 5 DTM For the races in 2017, they had more powerful engines and softer tyres to intensify the suspense in the races. In 2018, the aerodynamic downforce of the DTM race cars, with more than 500 horsepower, has been reduced by approximately 25 percent compared to last year. The newest generation of Audi RS 5 DTM is internally called RC7. Except the new aerodynamic and a simplified suspension, the design is basically the same as its predecessor, RC6, which was used for the first time in 2017. Audi RS 5 DTM has, since 2013 (up to and including the 2017 season), clinched 32 victories and set 26 pole positions as well as 42 fastest race laps in 73 events of the popular international touring car series. In each of the past three years, Audi won the largest number of DTM races.
About DTM • 10 race weekends on nine different tracks during the season • 20 races – each race weekend has two independent races • Three factory-backed teams participate with each six cars: BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi • The car (inclusive driver) has to weigh at a minimum 1115 kg • The race track’s laps are from 2.3 km (Norisring) to 4.574 km (Hockenheim) • Each race last 55 minutes plus a full lap • Winner 2017: Audi Sport/René Rast (factory-backed team), Audi Sport Team Rosberg (team).

INNOVATIVE MATERIALS
New material types have been introduced for workwear, offering you great advantages and benefits
Lightweight Insulation
Protect your toes in several ways with composite
Through many years, safety shoes were equipped with heavy steel toe caps. Today, you can have toe caps that provide the same level of safety, but that are made of composite materials. Composite is lighter and, unlike steel, doesn’t conduct heat or cold. By choosing footwear with a composite toe cap (in combination with a textile midsole) you avoid being exposed to hot or cold from the outside, and you can maintain an even temperature in the shoes.

Keep warm in a lightweight jacket
CLIMASCOT® lining is innovative because it has a unique combination of properties. In particular, you’ll benefit from the effective insulating properties of this extremely lightweight lining. It ensures that you can keep warm with a very lightweight jacket. In addition, the lining is breathable and takes up very little space when compressed for storage, e.g., in a duffel bag. See all the thermal jackets and winter jackets with CLIMASCOT® lining at www.mascotworkwear.com
Waterproof on several levels
It’s a big burden on your health if you get soaked during a cold work day. But how do you ensure that your workwear is completely waterproof? You should choose EN 343 certified outer wear. The certification ensures that your clothes are waterproof and breathable. If you’re looking for rainwear that should keep you dry while walking, standing and sitting, the hydrostatic pressure is a good indicator. In such situations, you should look for rainwear with a hydrostatic pressure at approximately 10,000 mm. Remember also to choose breathable materials so you can get rid of moisture when the activity level is high.

Highly modern facilities and solutions in the building With new construction comes new fittings, systems, and solutions. MASCOT has just moved into its new headquarters and shares some of the solutions used for the 35,500 m² building, which gathers administration, development, and logistics all under one roof.
Windows with solar screening and insulation The building’s biggest glass facade turns south and therefore, faces large amounts of sunlight. A solution with triple pane windows has been chosen which, according to the manufacturer, is the latest innovation and most advanced solution within solar screening control. The glass effectively separates light and heat. It allows for the light to come in and provide a light office environment year round while keeping heat out to avoid superheating of the office. In addition, the glass offers a pleasant indoor climate year round due to its high insulating power, which keeps the heat from vanishing through the glass during winter. Due to the properties of the glass, the energy consumption can be cut down, as no extra energy is needed for heating during winter and cooling during summer. The look is aesthetically neutral and without external reflection. 15079-010-010 Trousers with kneepad pockets. 15089-154-010 Tool Vest. 50128-933-01014 T-shirt, long-sleeved.

Highly automated logistics centre One of the vital components in MASCOT’s construction is the fully automated high-bay storage warehouse; a part of the comprehensive logistics centre. The process from goods receipt to goods dispatch is automated to the highest possible level. Ultramodern hardware and software are combined so the goods are managed and transported in a closed flow to and from the highbay storage warehouse by robots, conveyor belts etc. Likewise is the process regarding order shipment, for example, automated.
Facts about the warehouse: • Contains more than 4 million items of workwear and safety footwear at the moment, with room for more • Has almost 400,000 stock-holding locations • 14 mini-load cranes • Each crane weighs 3.6 tons and has a speed of up to 40 km/hr. • 140 boxes per hour can be picked up, per crane • Each crane services 28,000 locations
Cooling and heating system in the subsoil 17115-318-01009 Jacket with CLIMASCOT®, water-repellent 100% polyester - 240 g/m²
To heat the building in the winter and cool it in the summer, MASCOT has chosen a geothermal heating and cooling system. Large buildings often have an extensive heat surplus during summer. The surplus heat is stored in the ground at approximately 60 metres depth where it is carried through the heat pumps to be used as heating during the cold periods. In the summer, the building is cooled down in a similar manner with the stored cold air. The water circulates in a loop between the building and the warm and cold stores in the ground. The geothermal heating and cooling system is estimated to give energy savings up to 60% on heating and 90% on cooling, as well as reduce the CO2 emission significantly.
