Rather it is an unearned favor, freely bestowed and available to all, that is inherent to our birthright. Quoting documents obtained through the legal discovery process, the article documents Monsanto's history as a chemical firm in prior decades, including alleged manipulation of cancer research. It then tracks the many twists of Monsanto's rise as the leading purveyor of genetically modified crops, including the patents for the New Leaf Potato, Bovine Growth Hormone and Bt corn.

The purpose of this? To provide resistance and strengthen and tighten the muscles (which is necessary to do of course). But do you need the gadget to achieve this? NOPE!
REAL DEAL: Guess what ? For a couple of bucks or a poke through your closet, this exercise can be done with a tennis ball, so save yourself those shipping charges. Carefully place a tennis ball between your chin and chest and gradually start applying pressure by squeezing the ball and holding about 2 seconds before repeating again.

You can increase your body’s fat-burning power by eating more foods that help your liver (your body’s main fat-metabolizing organ) to burn fat better, resulting in a leaner body. There are many fabulous foods that fight fat, but the ones below are some of my favorites:

Leafy Greens: Spinach, spring mix, mustard greens, and other dark leafy greens are good sources of fiber and powerhouses of nutrition. Research demonstrates that their high concentration of vitamins and antioxidants helps prevent hunger while protecting you from heart disease, cancer, cataracts, and memory loss.
Beans & Legumes: Legumes are the best source of fiber of any foods. They help to stabilize blood sugar while keeping you regular. They are also high in potassium, a critical mineral that reduces dehydration and the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. A legume, soy is particularly good for fat-burning. Isoflavones found in soy foods speed the breakdown of stored fat. In one study, those who consumed high amounts of soy products shed three times more superfluous weight than did their counterparts who ate no soy.
Garlic & Onions: This dynamic duo of foods contains phytochemicals that break down fatty deposits in the body, while also breaking down cholesterol; killing viruses, bacteria, and fungi; and protecting against heart disease. EGCG increases the rate at which fat is burned in your body. Research at Tufts University indicates that EGCG, like other catechins, activates fat-burning genes in the abdomen to speed weight loss by 77 percent. Most studies show that drinking at least 3 cups daily offers the best health benefits.

Cinnamon: Researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture showed that a quarter to one teaspoon of cinnamon with food helps metabolize sugar up to twenty times better than food not eaten with cinnamon. Excess sugar in the blood can lead to fat storage. Before you sip that chai tea latte or eat your oatmeal, sprinkle on the cinnamon.
Flax Seeds & Flax Seed Oil: These seeds and oil attract oilsoluble toxins that become lodged in the fatty tissues of the body. Once attracted, they help to escort fat-soluble toxins out. That spells fewer fat stores and a trimmer you.

I'll bet you've had a dream in the past as scary and shocking as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. LIVER QI STAGNATION: WHAT IS IT & WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? -By Nicole Cutler
I
f you’ve ever seen or spoken with an acupuncturist before, you may have heard the term ‘liver
qi stagnation’. Even if the terminology is new to you, it is likely that at some point in your life it has or will affect you. Awareness of the general concept behind liver qi stagnation will help you recognize when you are most susceptible and take several simple steps to relieve this common imbalance. Whether considering the liver in Eastern or Western medicine, this organ has many functions. In Western medicine, the liver is responsible for cleansing toxins from the blood, storing energy, manufacturing many essential substances (cholesterol, hormones, proteins, enzymes and bloodclotting factors) and producing bile. In Eastern medicine, the liver is responsible for storing the blood, regulating energy (qi), harmonizing the emotions, assisting digestive functions and nourishing the body’s eyes, tendons and ligaments.

LIVER QI STAGNATION When overworked, the liver tends to get clogged up and perform sluggishly.
• Western holistic health practitioners may refer to this as a congested liver. • Acupuncturists call it liver qi stagnation. • Allopathic physicians only diagnose a liver problem if blood tests, an ultrasound or biopsy
indicate liver damage.
Liver qi stagnation frequently exists far before any evidence of liver damage surfaces. However, liver qi stagnation that persists unabated for an extended period of time can cause a long list of serious health issues – including liver damage, endometriosis, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure and more. Liver qi stagnation is responsible for a wide range of vague, odd-sounding symptoms that can render someone more susceptible to serious illness. Unfortunately, a Western medical doctor cannot detect liver qi stagnation and will proclaim someone with this imbalance to be completely healthy. Liver qi stagnation refers to liver energy that fails to disperse normally and act freely. Acupuncturists refer to liver qi flowing free and easy throughout the body as a tenet of good health. Emotions are the primary factor impeding liver qi flow. As such, impairment of the liver qi is frequently a result of emotional upset, depression and rage. In addition to emotions being at the root, inactivity and excess toxins building up in the liver can cause liver qi stagnation. Toxins can be anything the body does not easily process, such as chemicals, drugs, alcohol, trans fats and sugar.
COMMON LIVER QI STAGNATION SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE: •
Pain or discomfort in the abdomen, flanks
(sides of the trunk) or breasts

Sensation of a lump in the throat or
difficulty swallowing
•
Frequent sighing
•
Bitter taste in the mouth

RELIEVING LIVER QI STAGNATION The good news is that liver qi stagnation is not permanent. There are many ways to ease liver congestion. Common strategies include limiting the amount of toxins entering your body (eating healthy foods), regular exercise (this helps circulate qi), finding ways to release stress and anxiety and working out any lingering anger issues.
THE FOLLOWING FOODS HELP DISPERSE LIVER QI: •
Turmeric, mustard seed, orange peel and saffron

Garlic, onions and fennel
•
Apple cider vinegar, lemon and lime
•
Kumquats and cherries
•
Red and black dates
•
Mushroom, squash and sweet potato
If exercising regularly, avoiding toxins, eating healthy food, relieving stress, and managing anger do not seem to be easing liver qi stagnation, consult a licensed acupuncturist. These professionals have access to a variety of non-invasive therapies that help relieve liver congestion. Although working towards the free and easy flow of liver energy may not be your first priority, it is one of the greatest steps you can take towards assuring your own wellness; now and in the future. OPTIONS FOR LIFE FOOD: THE NATURAL SOLUTION FOR CANCER-PROTECTIVE ESTROGEN MANAGEMENT -By Elyn Jacobs

strogen is thought to be the driving force behind
many breast cancers; however, estrogen is only one part of the cancer story. To protect ourselves against cancer, we must control the estrogen, cut off the pathways for cancer, detoxify the body, reduce inflammation, and protect our DNA and so much more. tanding for hours, walking on hard
surfaces, wearing non-sensible shoes— that’s a day in the life of a foot. We demand a lot from our feet, yet often take them for granted…Until our “dogs” start to dog us with pain! Our feet are made up of 26 bones, 56 ligaments, and 38 muscles—which translates to roughly 25% of the bones and the muscles in our entire body. And every day, our feet absorb about 1,000 lbs. of force. By the time we’ve reached our 50th birthday, most of us will have walked more than 70,000 miles. No wonder foot pain is the 3rd most common medical complaint.
There’s a good chance that we’ll be one of the 80% of the U.S. population that will suffer from some kind of foot ailment at some point in our life. Here is some information and tips to help you stave off pain and stay foot loose and fancy free! continued on next page

STEP INTO THE RIGHT SHOES If the shoe fits…wear it! Treat your feet right by protecting them with proper, foot-friendly shoes. Unfortunately, some of the most popular shoes are also the worst for feet. Here’s a rundown of the ones you should walk away from.
The Worst Offender: Flip Flops Fashionable thongs made of colorful rubber, sometimes glamorously bedecked with sparkling glitter or flower embellishments, flip flops remain one of the most beloved shoes of summer. They’re easy to slip on, easy to slip off, and—unfortunately—they also make feet more susceptible to pain and injuries. Here are some of the reasons flip flops should not be worn, or at least not worn for any length of time. (They’re fine for lounging by a pool or at the beach, but not out pounding the pavement.)
•
Flip flops offer no arch support. In fact, continuous walking in flat-
soled footwear may cause the calf muscle to stretch, resulting in the
Achilles tendon getting strained. Also, wearing shoes without support
on a regular basis can cause knee, hip and back problems.
•
Because flip flops are thin and flimsy, feet hit the ground with more
intensity/greater impact, which is more jarring to bones and joints.
•
Flip flops can aggravate foot deformities such as bunions and
hammertoes, and also contribute to such painful conditions as plantar
fasciitis. •
Flip flops leave feet totally exposed, making them vulnerable to cuts
and scrapes. In addition, their thin soles are easily punctured by
shards of glass, nails, splinters, etc., opening the door to more injuries. continued on next page

Flip flops and other backless shoes cause toes to “over
grip” in order to keep them on your feet, which can throw your gait and balance off kilter, increasing the risk of tripping by as much as70%.
•
Not only are flip flops typically not made in an
environmentally conscious fashion, their rubber soles are porous, which makes them a breeding ground for funguses, bacteria, and other germs. This unhealthy environment can lead to athlete’s foot, warts, and other unpleasant conditions and infections.
•
The thin rubber thong between the toes causes
friction, which can result in irritation, blisters and abrasions between the toes that may become susceptible to infection. Diabetics should be particularly wary of wearing flip flops if they have disease-related neuropathy because they won’t be able to feel any irritation until there is a significant problem.
When it comes to easy and breezy summer shoes, sandals would be a better choice. But if you insist on flip flops, be sure to invest in a good, well-constructed, quality pair that offers support. The best: those with an orthotic foot bed (which, by the way, can be very cute and fashionable looking, too).

OTHER OFFENDING FOOTWEAR BALLET FLATS: Those sweet little ballet flats seem to always be en vogue. They are cute, with a sole as flat as a pancake…Which means that they present the same problems as flip flops in terms of lack of support.
SNEAKERS SANS SOCKS: The right sneaker or athletic shoe offers great support and comfort. But don’t ditch socks or you’ll create an environment that’s friendly to breeding bacteria.
RUBBER/PLASTIC “CLOGS”: This style of shoe has become wildly popular for both adults and children, but is not meant for long-term, real-world wear. Unless you have purchased a name-brand expensive pair, your feet may be in for all kinds of bacteria/fungus issues. And be forewarned, there have been news reports over the past several years that individuals wearing soft-soled clogs—especially children— are getting their toes caught in escalators, and suffering from minor to major injuries as a result. continued on next page

HIGH HEELS: Podiatrists say more than half of Americans regularly experience aching feet, and that that 80% of those who go for treatment are women. No doubt high heels have something to do with that! Compounding pain issues is the fact that women walk, on average, three miles farther than men each day. And, according to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) 65% of women spend more than four hours on their feet each day. High heels LOOK fabulous—but are brutal for feet. Wearing them can lead to Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, sprained and swollen ankles, forefoot pain, blisters, aching feet, hammertoes, corns and calluses, lower back pain, knee strain, as well as other painful conditions.
Despite the health hazards, women are not about to give up their stilettoes! Here are some tips for reducing the physical dangers of wearing high heels. •
Make sure the heels fit well. Studies show that 88% of American
women wear shoes that are too small. As we age, feet expand, so it’s
helpful to have them measured periodically.
•
Choose to try on shoes at the end of your day, as they swell throughout
the day when you stand and walk around.
•
Try on both pairs of shoes, as your feet may not be identical in size and
the shoes may not be identical in size as well.
•
Consider high heeled shoes with an “air bag” or very comfortable sole
that protects your feet from rubbing and provides shock absorption. If
the shoes you love do not have a padded sole, get a cushy insert. continued on next page

•
Spend less time perched on high heels. Limit your walking and standing when
wearing high heels, and whenever possible give your feet a break during the day
by switching to more comfy shoes, at least for a while.
•
Apply Topricin Foot Therapy Cream to feet before strutting out in heels as a

Elevate your legs for 15 or 20 minutes to reduce swelling.
This is especially important if you tend to cross your legs,
which hinders circulation and causes blood to “pool” in
your feet.
•
Diabetics often suffer from swelling feet, and have a
tendency to have more pressure inside their foot which
is said to be the cause of initial skin breakdown and
lesions. The best course of action they can take is to
see their primary care physician and podiatrist
on a regular basis and keep their blood sugar under
control. Elevating their feet and icing them are helpful,
followed by applying Topricin after the cold therapy.
•
Treat your feet to a massage. At the end of a long day, a
good foot rub feels great and does wonders for your
feet. Look for a foot roller that is specially designed to
massage the soles of the feet, or roll your bare feet over
a tennis ball or golf ball.

Soak in relief. Treat your feet to a nice relaxing warm
bath with Epsom salts, which will help relax your muscles, reduce
pain, and sedate the nervous system as well as help drain
toxins and reduce swelling. Another technique that’s refreshing
and stimulating is to fill one basin with cold water and another
with hot. Start by placing your feet in cold water for five minutes,
then switch to the hot, and repeat. What happens is this “hydro
massage” alternately dilates then constricts the blood vessels in
your feet, which boosts circulation.
Work it out. Exercise can help relieve your feet’s aches and pains. Here are a few suggestions:
•
A simple exercise is to first point, then flex, your feet, which helps
stretch out the small muscles on the bottom of the foot.
•
Stand and raise both heels up so that you’re on the balls of your
feet, and hold for 10 seconds (repeat 10 times).
•
Try scattering some pens and pencils on the floor, and pick them
up with your toes, one at a time. •
Feet that have been cramped in shoes all day will benefit from this
exercise in resistance: wrap a thick rubber band around all the
toes (one foot at a time). Spread your toes open as far as
you can, and hold for five seconds. (Repeat this stretch & release

Sweaty feet are not only uncomfortable, but can lead to health issues because it makes feet more
susceptible to infections. Most people do not hydrate sufficiently enough and their body temperatures will normally rise, depending upon their level of activity. Water also regulates your body’s natural internal temperature—which equals less sweating. In addition to drinking plenty of water, try using talc-free powders and natural deodorants, such as “crystal” deodorant, on your feet. You may also want to take your shoes off periodically throughout the day so your feet can “air out.” •
Maintain a balanced PH. Some simple, natural ways are to take the supplement acidophilus;
immerse feet in hot water with a combination of Epsom salts and natural apple cider vinegar. (Vinegar corrects PH on skin, helps reduce itching, and neutralizes fungus; Epson salts help draw out toxins and neutralize fungus as well. In addition, Epson is very soothing for muscle aches and joint pain. •
Avoid eating nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, white potatoes) and gluten

s the hot new club the health-food store? Recently, I’ve felt the need to spruce up prior to entering the automatic doors of my local whole food store. Literally, I do a once-over to ensure that I’m green-carpet worthy. Recyclable bags--check! Proper yoga gear on--check! Eco-friendly water bottle--check! Now I’m good to walk the aisles as one with the environment. My son takes an apple off the shelf and it’s not organic. I’m sure that was a look I received from the woman near me. Should I grab the apple and lecture him on why we don’t eat conventional? My Pranayama course comes in handy--I decide to breathe deeply, and let it go. During my mini-meditative moment, I see the image of the New Yorker cartoon posted on my fridge. It pictures the evil witch handing Snow White the infamous apple. The caption reads:

Interestingly, there is a long tradition of glorifying food production. Tom Standage writes in An Edible History of Humanity: “In pre-revolutionary France, Queen Marie-Antoinette had an idealized farm built on the grounds of the palace of Versailles, where she and her ladies-in-waiting would dress up as shepherdesses and milkmaids, and milk cows that had been painstakingly cleaned…” Not so different from a recent episode of a reality television show. A company arrives at a celebrity couple’s backyard and plants an organic garden with automatic watering system in less than an hour. The couple is quick to label themselves as organic farmers yet are free from dirt and labor. The essence of nutrition has changed because of its en vogue status. Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled that more are aware of the severity of the obesity epidemic and that people are taking great measures to protect our children. I am thankful for the efforts of the American Heart Association, the William J. Clinton Foundation’s Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. It is crucial that we educate ourselves so we can make healthier choices for ourselves and our families. And this is my point. Health should not be a status symbol. It is not something we put on to appear more worthy. Do we really want to make health such a trend that we constantly feel like we have to overspend, making carrots akin to caviar? Just look at the data about publicized health foods in the last decade: Olive oil consumption has nearly tripled since 1991; walnut consumption reached a record high in 2004/05, of 0.54 pounds per person; and the acai berry has seen sales triple in just three years, from $3.8million in 2005 to $13.5 million in 2007. (Bittman ,Food Matters ).
Making health fun and attractive is not immoral. However, it’s more positive to direct our energies towards nourishing all with quality foods. CBS Sunday Morning’s “Fighting Hunger in a Land of Plenty” profiled the efforts of the California Food Bank. Recently, the association started the Farm to Family Program, in which volunteers gather fresh produce for food banks, so the hungry can eat healthy broccoli, portobello mushrooms, lovely potatoes and yams, carrots etc. Another program is The Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), established by Congress in 1992, that supplies local fruits and vegetables to women and their children. A hearty dream yes, to satisfy all who are hunger for health. But if we collectively shift away from thinking of health as an exclusive lifestyle and focus on providing good nourishment to all, our souls and stomachs will benefit. Let’s get rid of the VIP status and sit down at the same table.
Have you noticed the huge marketing campaigns for these foods? The commercials, the packaging, the infusion of “ingredients” into numerous other marketplace categories—even beauty products and clothing. It’s ironic that we spend so much time and energy making health pretty when the cleanest foods come from the dirt: Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

There is some experience that may benefit from using this as a metaphor. Something, someone or some experience needs to be kept at the center of your life, and everything else organized around it. This is likely to involve your physical home, who is welcome there and whether they feel comfortable -beginning with you. Gemini (May 20-June 21) You have been through an interesting tour of your feelings about yourself. You seem to have considered this from every possible point of view, and I think that's a beautiful (and necessary) thing for a conscious person. Be conscious of when you’re trying to enhance how you feel about yourself by altering externals -- your appearance, for example, or making sure that people know your accomplishments. There’s a place and time for those things, but at the moment, your astrology is about orienting from the inside out. Consider this: If you emphasize your appearance in some way, that’s taking consciousness from your interior reality. Experiment with this to see it in action. You’re not valued by others because your appearance is so good, or so acceptable, or because your flaws are hidden. Your astrology is describing you as centered in that relationship, and if you observe yourself and focus your attention there, you can answer many of your own questions about who you are, what you want to be doing and why. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Is there a secret that you're hiding from yourself? I don't mean something you're denying; I mean something you're concealing from your awareness. Rather than looking for that thing, I suggest you look for the motive you might have. For example, if you fully consider something, what decisions might that lead you to make? If you admit something to yourself, what would you have to say to others about it? There may be some tension between your inner reality and the outer effects if you allow that to come fully into your consciousness. I would propose that the result of allowing your inner reality to the surface would be a form of strength and power that you're not accustomed to, and that you might consider scary. But is it really? You will never know unless you allow it to happen.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) You still may not be fully in harmony with the extent to which you’re perceived as a leader. I don’t mean a boss, though that may be true. I mean someone in a position of moral authority, someone who is a reference point for right and wrong. As such, it’s essential that you question yourself, and that those questions lead somewhat directly to useful information. It’s clear that you’re doubting something about yourself, indeed, it’s likely that you’re obsessed with your doubts. But that’s not a direct path to knowledge -- it seems more like a diversion. Here's a more challenging question: what would you have to give up if you start making better decisions? Your chart says that you're being called to service in a big way. True, you might consider helping people match their shoes to their dress a form of service, but I would submit that may be better suited for your list of mistakes. You have a purpose, it is significant, and it's beautiful -- all you need to do is get out of your own way.
There seem to be two parallel worlds in your relationships. One looks like passion and chaos, complete with mixed signals flying in all directions, bright light, dark shadows, passion and repulsion. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) There is an I Ching hexagram (number 41) called Decreasing. Really, it means concentrating. I think of the energy of this hexagram as being about cutting back on what is not necessary, trimming back your energy field and focusing on what is important -- with a view toward the long run. That is what your charts are about now. Tidy up any fires that are burning out of control; keep your flame concentrated and contained. Use your heat and energy consciously. While you're at it, organize the kitchen, clean out one cupboard, scrub the teakettle and toss out anything that doesn't belong in your refrigerator. Focus on doing what is necessary using less energy than you usually do, but using it more meaningfully. Your confidence will grow and in the process you will discover some unexpected form of success.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) There are times when your calling is undeniable. If you're not one of those people who feels this every day, get ready to experience it over the next five or six weeks. Most commercial furniture polish is mostly petroleum solvents with a bit of synthetic lemon fragrance, exposing yourself and your family to neurotoxicants, respiratory toxicants, and cardiovascular and blood toxicants, according to scorecard.org. The neurotoxic exposure can make you feel depressed and anxious. Here is a solution that is natural, green, and non-toxic, yet it gets the job done. One source of jojoba oil is Desert Essence.
DIY Furniture Polish/Wax - 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar - 1/4 teaspoon jojoba liquid wax - a few drops natural essential oil of lemon (optional, although note that lemon oil is very uplifting, as opposed to the depression that petroleum distillates can cause)
Add the ingredients to a small glass jar, and shake to blend. Dip a soft rag into the mixture and work the polish into the wood, moving along the grain line. NUTRITONAL BITES RECIPES ROUFIA’S RECIPE CORNER T
he idea of “cold soups” seems so foreign or strange to some people that they just can’t seem to bring themselves to try one. But on a hot summer day or evening, nothing beats the heat better than a nice chilled soup—perhaps with a simple green salad-- and a loaf of good, whole grain peasant bread. Gazpacho is one of my summertime favorites. Filled with all kinds of glorious fresh vegetables, it’s like a refreshing “liquid salad.” You can be creative and adjust the actual vegetables, adding more or less depending on what you find at the farmer’s market or store. If you like tomato, I think you will love this recipe!
GAZPACHO Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 English cucumber or two small regular cucumbers halved and seeded 1 red bell peppers, cored and seeded 4 fresh tomatoes 1 red onion 2 ribs of celery 1 small zucchini 2 garlic cloves, minced 23 ounces organic tomato or vegetable juice (3 cups) 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil Two tablespoons of fresh lemon A handful of fresh herbs of your choice: parsley, cilantro, and/or chives are good; a pinch of oregano or basil too Optional: If you like heat, add 1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped (use gloves); tabasco/hot sauce to taste Sea salt & fresh ground pepper to taste
Directions: Roughly chop the vegetables, reserving some on the side and dicing into smaller pieces. Place bulk of veggies and herbs in a blender or food processor and pulse to desired consistency, then mix with tomato juice. OR you can also blend the vegetables with the tomato juice or use an “inversion blender.” Mix in the oil, vinegar, lemon juice, salt & pepper (and hot sauce, if using) and stir well to combine. Add the reserve vegetables, taste and adjust the seasonings. Some people prefer a chunky gazpacho; I like to make mine relatively smooth, and use the diced reserved vegetables for some extra body. Chill before serving. The longer gazpacho sits, the more the flavors develop. continued on next page

SIMPLE GREEN SALAD DRESSING Along with ripe garden tomatoes, farm fresh cucumbers are one of the season’s greatest treats. Here is a recipe for a simple yet exquisitely tasty salad dressing that is the essence of summer. (Please note that the amount of ingredients is approximate— adjust the oil and vinegar and herbs to please your own palate.)
Ingredients: • 1 fresh cucumber, peeled, seeded and roughly chopped • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil • ¼ (or more) cup apple cider vinegar (to taste) • 2 tablespoons of water • 1 or 2 cloves of garlic (to taste) • Handful of fresh herbs (parsley, basil, chives, tarragon, thyme, etc.) • Sea salt and pepper
Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings.
