WORDS FROM THE
Since our first edition in the summer of 2015, quite a bit has changed in the cattle business. A much-shorter-thanpredicted high cattle cycle coupled with one of the most challenging weather years that most can remember has left us all feeling just a little worn out. Its not all bad news though – the fall show season is almost here! And despite the countless hours of work that the season brings – it also brings the opportunity to share in the love of good cattle with family and the friends that have not been seen since the last time you attended [insert show name here]. A shared passion for good cattle really lies at the heart of our industry – and at the heart of this magazine. We want to recognize the great ones and this is how we commence our seventh issue. The inaugural feature on page 16 tells the story of a dominant champion on the American show circuit, born and raised in Western Canada. Possibly the most-heard question all summer was What is happening at Agribition? This edition of Top Stock endeavours to answer this question with the inside scoop from newly appointed Agribition CEO Chris Lane. Spoiler alert – In case you missed it last year, there is still time to score your signed brick from the Swamp! If you want to know more, you’ll have to check out the article on page 28. As is becoming a fall issue tradition, we were also pleased to secure an interview with the judge of the highly competitive National Junior Beef Heifer Show. Michigan cattlemen Bob Goble grew up showing at the Royal Winter Fair. He brings ample experience on both sides of the microphone with him as he hits the ring in early November. While you are waiting for Mr. Goble to get started, be sure to pick up a copy of Top Stock. We will have free editions available at the Royal, and are pleased to be a major sponsor of the National Junior Beef heifer show. If you can’t make it east, we invite you to visit us and grab your free copy at Edmonton’s Farmfair or Canadian Western Agribition. We would like to remind our reader’s that we do not produce a winter edition – instead, we will resume publication on March 3 with our spring A.I. and bull sale edition. This is a highly anticipated issue, as it contains a full listing of the fall show results – you will want to be a part of it! In the interim, it's time to make history again! We wish the best of luck to all exhibitors – See you on the show road. – Katie Songer

Inaugural "Dueling Divas" Heifer Bracket – Recent Stock Show University a wella hit with All-Breeds Show Participants attended Learning Experience Inspired by the US College March Madness Basketball series, a single elimination heifer show was held at this year's Canadian National Junior All-Breeds Show in Bashaw, Alberta. All 2015 born yearling heifers were automatically entered in the "Dueling Divas" event, and were shown in pairs with the winning heifer moving on to the next round. Prize money was paid for each win, with the amount increasing in each round – ultimately ending in a head-to-head showdown for Grand Champion. (See the winners in the show results section of this issue!) The highly competitive, well-received event was devised as a fund-raiser for the All-Breeds event. Copies of the bracket were available for purchase prior to the show, giving the audience a chance to predict the winner. Half the proceeds went to the show, with the other half going to the entry with most predicted wins.
YCSA to Host New Conference in 2017
With over 160 people in attendance on August 20th and 21st at the Lindsay Fair Grounds in Ontario, RK Cattle & Sullivan's hosted a very successful Stock Show University. The outstanding line-up of professors sourced from both the USA and Canada included Demi Powers, Kenzie Flory, Chris Ford, Jordan Buba, Darryl Snider, Maguire Blair, Braydon Schmidt, Sylvia Megens, Brandon Hollingsworth, Scott Martin, Brandy Thaxter, Brett Thaxter, Andy Reid, and Sandy Reid. Topics covered during the two day event ranged from proper washing, clipping, use of fitting products, and showmanship skills. All participants showed great interest and learned many skills, and everyone in attendance (includeding the professors) enjoyed the highlight of the event – the cupcake eating contest! If you are interested in attending in a Stock Show University, free events will be hosted on Nov. 3 at the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto, Nov. 11 at Farmfair International, Edmonton.
The Young Canadian Simmental Association is excited to be hosting a Leadership Conference on February 23 to 25, 2017 in Calgary, AB. The conference will be open to all youth 16 - 25 years of age – you do not have to be a YCSA member to attend! The conference will focus on leadership along with allowing participants to gain a deeper knowledge of the cattle industry. It will be a great opportunity for youth to network with fellow producers from across the country and industry representatives. Follow the Young Canadian Simmental Association on Facebook for more details. Hope to see you there! 014

N
ineteen-year old Madison Ratliff says she can’t thank her grandfather enough for talking her dad into buying a heifer over the phone from Riverstone Cattle Company of Olds, Alberta. Madison’s grandfather, Gail “Tubb” Ratliff – now retired from the cattle business – was the founder of Cherry Creek Farms, known for decades of stringent Limousin breeding before a total herd dispersal sale in 2010. The Ratliff’s are a well-known family hailing from Westphalia, Kansas and naturally have an eye for good cattle. It all started with a good friend, a love for cattle, and an itch to travel. And it’s a recipe that’s made for a neat story about how a Canadian-bred heifer ended up where she did: on a winning streak at hugely competitive American shows. It turns out Ratliff’s long time friend, Herman Symens of South Dakota, has a son that now resides in southern Alberta. Knowing that Symens makes frequent trips to visit his son, Ratliff commented that one day he wanted to go to Canada to visit him and perhaps even take in a cattle show. Taking his friend seriously, Symens called Ratliff last summer and suggested that he attend Farmfair International. When Ratliff replied that he did not have a passport, Symens piped up, “you better get one!” Of course Ratliff didn’t want to disappoint his good friend, so he got a passport and the next thing you know he was Alberta bound.

The wish of visiting Canada and attending a cattle show came to fruition – Ratliff made it to Farmfair with Symens. After taking in the Limousin show at Farmfair, the duo ran into Tim and Kim Matthews, of Riverstone Cattle Company. They had not met in about 15 or 20 years and after a brief re-introduction, Matthews inquired as to whether they still had Limousin cattle on their farm. Ratliff expressed that though he had retired from breeding decisions on the family’s operation, his grandchildren were very active in showing. He explained to Matthews that the family liked to take out several breeds for the kids to exhibit so that they could compete in different classes, making a trip to a show more worthwhile. Ratliff was baffled at the price of show animals these days, which he admitted made it challenging for his grandkids to campaign heifers from multiple breeds. Matthews jokingly handed him a catalog for his sale, that he had tucked in his arm and said, “I know where you can buy one.” The next morning, Gail Ratliff called Matthews asking if he could stop by and look at the sale offering. He took some photos and video footage and returned

home. A few weeks later, Matthews got a call from David Ratliff, Gail’s son. They discussed a couple of females, but zeroed in on the Charmed heifer. David expressed to Matthews in a phone conversation that he had never bought a female sight-unseen. He trusted his dad’s judgment, but the generation gap meant they didn’t always see cattle the same way. At the same time, he thought, “a good one is a good one!” (Gail’s impression of the heifer would be validated when David picked her up, calling him immediately to tell him that he had “done good.”) On the day of Matthew’s sale, Madison was playing in a basketball tournament. That didn’t stop the Ratliff’s from being in two places at once, figuratively speaking. David and Gail stepped out into the parking lot to be on the phone during the sale to bid on the heifer. Madison recalls the end of the basketball game, when her dad and grandpa pulled her aside and told her that they purchased the Charmed female. Madison had only

seen the images that her grandpa had taken during his visit to Alberta. When asked what she thought the first time she saw her new show heifer, she commented that her gut feeling told her that Charmed female would be good – little did she know at the time how much success she would have with her. Assessing her strengths Miss Ratliff says, “she’s really powerful and holds herself together,” explaining how she has that special look to her. And she’s been
dominating the show circuit ever since. Her winnings so far include: Double Supreme Champion Female in both (Ring A and Ring B), KSU AGR Kick Off Show; Double Reserve Supreme Champion Female, 2016 Steers and Stripes Steer and Heifer Show; Champion Limousin Heifer and Supreme Champion Overall Female, 2016 Milan FFA Jackpot; Champion Limousin Heifer and Supreme Champion Overall Female 2016 NWMSU AGR Green & Gold Show; Grand Champion Female 2016 National Junior

Judges have told Miss Ratliff that they’ve never seen a Limousin this good before, commenting on her dominance in all-breeds competitions. Charmed has a star studded pedigree. She is sired by TMCK Durham Wheat, the 2012 Canadian National Champion Limousin Bull. Matthews purchased him from Tubmill Creek Farms in 2010, and he has been successfully used in their program, leaving a legacy of high quality females. Her dam, HSF Your Fantasy, was a dominating force when she was campaigned, winning nearly every major show in Western Canada as a yearling. Interestingly she set a record as the only Limousin female to win

Supreme Champion Female at the First Lady Classic and the Junior Beef Extreme show at Canadian Western Agribition. Matthews must have had a special feeling when they selected the Charmed female for the Lot 1 position in the first annual Forged in Fire sale. In their footnotes they predict, “she is definitely going to win some ribbons and banners along the way.” That statement could not have turned out more true!

Miss Ratliff, who’s been showing since the age of seven, says the Charmed heifer is the best that she has ever had. Like her family members, she knows a good animal when she sees one, but it didn’t hit her just how good the heifer was until she started winning. Her favourite show win: Limousin Junior 021

Nationals. She has been competing at that show for as long as she could remember and “we finally got to win it,” she exclaims. “I remember my grandpa hugging me, and everyone crying. It was a special moment for the entire family.” Tim and Kim Matthews, who had been following her success from afar through play-by-play text conversations, even flew to Kentucky for the National Junior Limousin show. “This heifer is all because of my Grandpa Ratliff. He has supported me and my four other siblings in everything that we do. He rarely misses a cattle show. No matter how we do at a show he always hugs us afterwards and tells us how proud he is,” Miss Ratliff says with gratitude. Miss Ratliff is currently attending Butler Community College. In the future, she aspires to attend Kansas State University and obtain a degree in animal science. She plans to continue to show cattle and looks forward to taking the heifer that she affectionately refers to as “Larissa the Limi” to several more shows, including the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, and the National Western Stock Show before she retires from the show ring on the Ratliff ’s family farm. Her show day tip, a quote: "Practice like you've never won. Perform like you've never lost.” Left, Above Bottom Ratliff shows Charmed to a Double Reserve Supreme title (both rings) at the Steers & Stripes Show.

anadian Western Agribition is turning 46 years old this November, and the exhibition grounds it calls home are getting a makeover. Evraz Place, the home of Agribition, is in the midst of a facility transition that will change the landscape of Regina’s famed winter livestock show. A number of these changes will be on display for Agribition 2016, running November 21-26. The roots of Evraz Place stretch back to the days before Saskatchewan joined Confederation, according to Bonnie Stephenson’s Agribition. “The first Territorial Exhibition, held in 1895, had garnered enough interest and support to be worthy of generous financial contributions,” Stephenson writes. “The Dominion Government extended $25,000 while the Territorial Government and Town Council each donated $10,000.” With these funds, she continues, the Assiniboia Agricultural Society purchased 50 acres for their new, permanent fair grounds. “Along with later acquisitions, this land constitutes the present day location of the Regina Exhibition Association and Canadian Western Agribition.” Evraz Place, formerly known as Exhibition Park, has seen many changes since then, particularly after the first Agribition in 1971. During the 1970s and ‘80s, barns and other buildings were constructed and renovated regularly to meet the needs of the increasingly popular show. Throughout the decades, these places saw numerous big wins, epic celebrations and memories that became Agribition lore for exhibitors.

Pre-dating the rest of the Agribition grounds, the Auditorium was introduced to the public in 1952 and hosted such acts as Buck Owens, Johnny Horton, Roger Miller, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Stampede Wrestling, and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, to name only a few. ©© ShowChampions
Now, the face of Evraz Place will change again, as many of the buildings that have hosted Agribitions past were demolished earlier this year. Some buildings will be open for one last Agribition, before being torn down to complete the International Trade Centre, a 150,000-square foot multi-purpose facility. A press release from the Evraz Place media department states that “the primary goal of this investment is to enhance the stature of significant agricultural events such as the Canadian Western Agribition and Canada's Farm Progress Show … The

facility will also connect existing buildings on the grounds, making it one of the largest interconnected event facilities in North America.” The $37 million project will replace 14 buildings on the west side of the grounds.
The facility upgrades aren’t the only change for Agribition 2016; there is also a new CEO at the helm. Chris Lane became the CEO of Canadian Western Agribition this summer. With an agricultural background and years of leadership experience, most recently as a Senior Producer at CBC, Lane joined Agribition at an exciting time, and looks forward to the future of the show. “The Trade Centre will be partially complete this year for us, but not fully operational. That will happen next year,” says Lane. “Facility-wise, though, once people are in they’re not going to notice that much of a difference as in years past. We’ve got enough space and enough room for everybody to be inside, and especially on the beef side, we expect everyone will be in similar spaces to what they were in last year.”

The first phase of the demolition began in January 2016. Ten buildings were torn down, and half of the Winter Fair Building was demolished. Exhibition Stadium, the Pasqua and Harlton buildings and the rest of the Winter Fair Building were left in place to be used at this year’s show. They will be demolished in the new year to allow for the completion of the new facilities.

The remainder of the upgrades will be ready for next year’s edition of Agribition, Lane explains. “2017 will be a big year because the International Trade Centre will be complete. We’ll have well over 100,000 square feet of facilities for us to use, depending on what kind of entries we get,” he notes. Highlights of the completed Centre will include a new show arena and the new International Business Centre. With sufficient space and a solid plan to accommodate all exhibitors, Lane predicts that exhibitors will pleased with what’s in store for 2016. “I think exhibitors can expect — and they have the right to expect — and they will get another world-class show at Agribition. We have the space and the plan to keep everybody indoors and happy with the shows and sales,” he states. One upgrade Lane is particularly excited about is the renovations to create a new sales ring. “We’re going to rename it the John Deere Sale Arena, and renovations are underway for that to be our new sale arena space,” he says. The new sale arena will feature a new heating system,

Another new feature of the Centre is the brand-new wash rack, which will be fully functional for 2016. Lane believes these facility upgrades will make a major difference in the future of Agribition. “I think the new facilities were really a key in growing the show and taking it to the next level,” he says. “Some of our buildings were at the end of their life, and we knew that, so this new building gives us the latest in space and facilities. We’ll have … the comfort and all the modern conveniences of what you’d expect in a world-class livestock facility or trade show.” Thus far, the Agribition team has received positive feedback from exhibitors who are anxious to see the new facilities. “The ones that we’ve talked to so far about the changes are really excited about seeing where the new building is at this year and then
032
being able to be in it, fully functional, next year,” says Lane. “People who have been to Agribition over the years have seen a lot of changes. I think one year when the show first started people were outside, and then moved to tents, and then moved to buildings, and then some of those buildings, like I said, were at the end of their lives … We’re committed to being convenient, safe, and modern, and that’s what this process is all about.” With livestock entries at capacity for 2016 as entries close, Lane considers this interest from eager exhibitors to be a positive sign of things to come. “It looks like people are jumping on it to come to Agribition this year, so we’re excited about that,” he says. “I think (the exhibitors) understand that it takes a while to build a world-class facility, and we’re doing that, so it’s nice to see that everyone is still excited to come and be a part of Agribition this year and next year.”

Michigan cattleman returns to the Royal to judge the national junior beef heifer show. WORDS BY PIPER WHELAN
A
s a boy, showing at the world-famous Royal Winter Fair in Toronto was the highlight of Bob Goble’s year. “I used to dream about it every night, all year long,” he recalls wistfully. His favourite memory from those special years at the Royal? “When I won the national showmanship in 1991 — a long time ago,” he laughs. “That was probably the most exciting time for me.” Now a respected cattleman who runs Ridgeview Farm at Alto, Michigan, Goble will return to Toronto this November to the storied show ring of his youth. The 2016 Royal Winter Fair will feature Goble as the judge of the National Junior Heifer, an event he has dreamed of judging for many years. Raised at Janetville, Ontario, Goble became interested in cattle through his parents’ endeavours in
056
agriculture. “My family used to raise horses and show horses, and my mother and father had an interest in Charolais cattle, and so they bought a few and got into showing them,” he explains. “I got the bug from them, and then I couldn’t get enough of showing cattle.” Before buying his own operation in the United States, Goble worked as a herdsman for a number of farms. This list includes MZL at Millbrook, ON; David Hunt Farms at Kettleby, ON; Highland Farms at Ajax, ON; and Kylie Farms. These experiences taught Goble much about raising cattle, and prepared him for managing his own herd. “The biggest thing is that you have to breed cattle that are accepted by the industry — whether it’s your kind or not — to survive. You can breed your kind all you want, but if you can’t

sell them, then it doesn’t work out very well for you. You have to listen to the industry and what they’re looking for.” Goble’s path then led him to the U.S., and he moved to Michigan in 1999 to manage Ridgeview Farm. At the time, the farm was owned by Burt Lake, who ran 35 Hereford females. “After about six months of being here, my boss at the time informed me that in two

years he wanted to have a successful sale. That was his goal. So it was quite an experience, quite a ride for two years, to find enough cows and put together our first production sale,” he said. Goble managed the Ridgeview herd for 10 years before he purchased the operation from his boss. By working for both Canadian and American beef operations, Goble has experienced the different

marketing opportunities available in each country. “That’s really why we came to the States. In Ontario, you could market just females. There wasn’t really a bull market for the Hereford side of things at that time,” he explains. In the States, he notes, the markets for bulls and steers were larger than what he found in Canada at the time, and this prompted him to make the move. “It was an adventure. I’d done a lot in Canada, and when I came down here … it was like starting from scratch.” Today, Goble and his wife, Jami, run their Hereford operation together. Last year, they dispersed their main cow herd in order to spend more time with their four children. “I wanted to do it ourselves, so we dispersed our cows, and our hired man left, and we just became a family operation at that point,” says Goble. Their current herd consists of about 65 head. Not long after their dispersal, he accepted a job as an agronomist, a new role he enjoys. “I’m very blessed to have a wife and family that support me working off the farm and also stepped up, and my wife pretty much single handedly runs the farm that three of us used to run.”
FAVORITE SHOW JUDGED The National Shorthorn Show in Louisville …To walk into that arena, and it is white picket fences and green shavings, and it’s always the National Shorthorn Show … It is phenomenal to walk into that ring. I was very blessed to judge it with a very close friend of mine, so that one was probably the most fun show I ever judged.
ALL TIME FAVORITE COW/BULL It would probably have to be Kylie Golden Rose – that was her name. She was a Hereford heifer that won the Royal back to back. She won as a heifer calf and came back and won it again as a yearling the next year."
Possible subhead: In the Show Ring and Beyond An intriguing debate rising in the beef cattle show scene is whether or not the type of cattle that win shows actually represent real-world functionality and profitability. While this raises questions in Canada, Goble notes that this debate is even more relevant in the U.S. “It’s profitable. Selling high-dollar show cattle is obviously a great way to make a living, and you don’t have to sell very many of them to make a living. “The disappointing thing for me is that a lot of those show heifers never amount to anything as far as being future donors or cows that are really sought-after to have herd bulls out of. I’d kind of agree with you that there’s a bridge probably bigger down here than it is up there between

The first time I got to judge showmanship at the Royal was phenomenal. The first time I got to judge the National Hereford Show at the Royal, my dad came and he sat in the front row, and it was phenomenal to see him there and let him watch me do what I started out doing long before. He never got to see me judge a lot, but to have him in the stands was phenomenal. But still, Agribition was so much fun. I’ve been very blessed to judge all these shows.”

the commercial side of things and the showing side of things, especially when it comes to carcass data.”
WORDS OF ADVICE FOR JUNIORS Evaluate your animal, and the next year, try to find one better. That’s the way they’ll improve their herd: to show one, listen to what the judge says about them and then try to find one better the next year. So if they (lose) because they’re off from hooks to pins, or they’re not pretty enough, then go out and try to find one that’s better than that the next year, so they don’t get the same problem over and over."

Does he believe it’s possible to bridge this gap? “When we first started down here, that was our thing. We were selling show cattle. The older I got, the further we got away from it. We’ll still sell a few show heifers, but our breeding program is not at all designed to do that any more,” explains Goble. His family now focuses on raising females with excellent maternal trails, breeding for the features the Hereford breed is known for. “We breed pretty much exclusively for that, and we haven’t been able to accomplish both. For us, I’m happier breeding for calves that will go on and make nice cows, versus chasing a show heifer.” The show scene, however, is still important to Goble, whose four children also enjoying working with and showing cattle. When choosing show animals, he looks for calves that are “sound from the ground up,” he states, and that are pleasing to the eye. “If I don’t want to look at them, I won’t work on them. And the same with my children … If they don’t have that connection to them, they have no interest in showing them. They’re into sports, and there’s so many other opportunities for youngsters to explore that they really have to
059
"For us, I'm happier breeding for calves that will go on and make nice cows, versus chasing a show heifer.”
FAVORITE SHOW DAY TIP Remind them what happened last time. That’s what we try to do with our children … I never talk on the mic as far as showmanship. I’ll give them basically a broad view of what I’m looking for, but I try to talk to every junior out there in the ring and give them a point that they can work on — something they can work on for next time, especially if they’ve been excused from the ring in a class … I encourage the parents or whoever’s got the youngster there to ask them what I said when they walk out of the ring. The next time they got back into the ring, I want whoever is with them to remind them what I said again. So if we fix the major problems first, then I think we’ll see these youngsters really step up their game, especially if they’re really struggling … That’s probably my biggest show day tip, and what I do for the kids. Remember what happened last time: if they got beat, or why they got beat, and to be very proud of what they’re doing.”

ROLE MODELS GROWING UP & HOW THEY AFFECTED YOU My family was very supportive in what I did. Right off the top of my head, I could come up with five people that as a young person that really focused me: Grant Elmhirst from Indian River, Butch and Ross Bailey from Uxbridge, Gary Cornish from Tyrone and Tom Coulter … We’re talking when I was 12 years old, these guys formed me as far as the type I still look for. Last year I judged the Gold Show in Brampton, and I had to go back, and I still swear that they’re sitting on my shoulders … When I’m out there evaluating cattle, I still go back to what those guys taught me. Still to this day I wonder when you’re looking at one and you’re evaluating one, and you’re thinking maybe this one could win – and it’s almost like one of them smacks you on the side of the head and says, ‘what are you thinking?" like them, and they have to feel that connection with the animal to get them to work on them.” One of Goble’s proudest achievements is becoming a skilled judge. He has had the opportunity to evaluate cattle at many prestigious shows on both sides of the border. Growing up, he notes, there were no judging schools in Canada, “or anything to prepare you for describing cattle and also entertaining people when you’re evaluating a show, and that’s what the U.S. has done a really good job on, is teaching judges how to talk,” he explains. “Now, maybe they do that a little too well, and I’ve seen enough shows where it’s just canned reasons — where they describe the same thing over and over, but I’m not really sure they see the cattle. But I felt, myself, at a big disadvantage growing up that I never learned to talk about them. I knew what I thought about them, but I never learned how to actually speak out loud.”

Despite this, Goble had many opportunities to judge shows of various sizes and levels. The first major show he judged was at the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. “I was nervous the whole time I was out there to get through that one, but I don’t get as nervous now, once you can get through that one,” he says. He has also judged at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, and considers judging the Hereford show at the 2015 Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan, to be one of his biggest honours. “That would be my biggest accomplishment.” To judge the National Junior Heifer Show at the Royal Winter Fair, Goble states, is yet another major accomplishment. To check this show off his judging bucket list is something he’s long hoped for. “I’ve dreamed about it. I’ve wanted to do it since I couldn’t show any more. It’s been that long, waiting to do this. So I’m damned pumped about it.”
