WORDS FROM THE

This sixteenth edition of Top Stock marks the end of our fourth year as a publication. Each of these 16 editions has been near to my heart but the spring edition is always my favourite to compile. Sitting in the stands to watch the Agribition Beef Supreme Challenge never fails to give me chills when the lights go down. Assembling results that reflect an entire year of hard work in our industry is truly a privilege – it allows me to celebrate the dedication of a group of people who have deliberated over breeding decisions, endured long cold nights of calving, managed, selected, halterbroke and prepared their way to excellence, many year-in and year-out. As always, the story we start writing as soon as we get home from Agribition is the story of who won the most coveted prize in the Canadian cattle industry – We were thrilled to interview Kevin Blair of Blairs.Ag, and Glen Gabel, who co-owns his Supreme Champion with multi-Supreme winners Miller Wilson Angus, on their enormous accomplishments. Read about their wins in our show coverage section on page 70. In four years, there has been a tremendous evolution in the quality of the cattle that grace our publication, and new faces that started as juniors have left their mark on the scene. Our junior profile is a youth that we have our eye on for quite some time as she graced our November 2016 cover. She had a break-out year in 2018, but it is safe to say she has been a role model and mainstay on the Ontario show circuit for years. Her story so far is on page 16 – and it is only just beginning. Finally, on page 28, Kate Fullerton introduces alternative methods to animal therapy, giving producers another option in managing the health of their stock. Not exclusive to the purebred cattle world, her patients include commercial cattle, bucking bulls and horses. A seventh-generation rancher, Kate’s work is fuelled by her passion for livestock and brings together many years of education and experience.

“To those fortunate enough to win the big ones, always remember to be thankful, because it isn’t easy. Those who were like me who didn’t, God still has a plan for you....keep pushing.” Brandon Callis

Our next issue, distributed at Calgary Stampede, Summer Synergy and all of the junior breed nationals is a great way to advertise your fall female sales to an all-breeds audience. We would love to assist you in your advertising efforts. Please contact Tracy, Sarah, Meghan or myself (contacts on page 8). With enough notice, we can help you plan a complete branding effort. The deadline for booking your ads for the upcoming issue is June 10. We plan to be at many of the spring’s events. If you are a show organizer, please remember that we provide FREE results coverage for your event. All we need is your high resolution photos and a listing of your results! We hope you enjoy this sixteenth issue, and thank all of our advertisers for your support, as you allow us to keep on doing what we love. See you at the Jackpots! – Katie Songer, Editor 02

The basics of cattle breeding are the fundamental building blocks of a successful program. It starts with vigorous, unassisted born calves, out of mothers that are feminine, hardy, sound structured and minded, efficient, fertile and motherly with quality udders, and sired by bulls that are masculine, athletic, fertile, sound, with good performance. Additionally, we will host the panel discussion for the Canadian Angus Foundation Legacy Scholarship after our formal dinner. This is a really great way to discuss current aspects of the Angus breed, cattle industry, and agriculture industry at large, incorporating the younger generation’s perspectives and ideas. Between the five finalists $11,000 in scholarship money will be distributed! This summer the largest event hosted by the CJAA, Showdown, will take place in Barriere, BC. Each year the directors work hard to put on a great show for our junior members and this year will be no different. The North Thompson Agriplex has great facilities and we are looking forward to seeing many junior members and cattle there. It will be a great opportunity to network with juniors from across the country and see different genetics. Anyone 21 and under can participate in the show, regardless of whether you have purebred or commercial cattle. We have a number of travel bursaries given out by the CJAA and provincial associations, so make sure you apply. For more information, if you have any questions about the show, are looking for cattle to show, or are interested in helping out, contact Meghan McGillivray at meghanmcgillivray@gmail.com. Lastly, our Ambassador competition is held every year at convention - this year it will be in Drumheller, AB from June 6-9. M A K I N G

HISTORY WORDS BY JEFF GAYE

2018 was "an incredible year" for Reegan Sawyer.

R

eegan Sawyer loves cattle, and she loves cattle people. Her enthusiasm for the industry, and her hard work, led to a banner year for the 15-year-old from Middlesex County near London, Ontario. On January 17, the Middlesex County Cattlemen’s Association presented her with a special award recognizing her achievements. “It’s not something we present annually,” said Mel Curtis, the association’s secretary-treasurer. “We’re just recognizing her with a token and a gift to congratulate her for her success in 4-H this year.” Reegan earned grand champion showmanship honours at the 2018 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. She also showed at the 2018 North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky. “She’s had an incredible year,” Curtis said Her family runs a small operation in Middlesex County—35 to 40 head of cross-bred cows, with a focus on club calves. She’s a bright light on the junior circuit with whatever she’s showing, but she especially loves showing steers.

015

“I like show day,” she said. “I like the whole hype of it when you get there, it’s just a whole different world than showing heifers.” Much of the difference, she says, is because steers represent the final product of a beef breeding and production program. “When you show a steer, you’re raising it for the market,” she says. “You create a bond with it all year long, and then you get to show it and display it to the public and eventually sell it. And you can gain a perspective of ‘you know, I raised that, and it’s going to go to market and put food on the table for people.’” Her white steer Howie was her partner through last year’s triumphant show season, which included a win in her class at NAILE in Louisville. That show stands out as her favourite. “Louisville is a completely different world. When you show up you're completely in awe,” Reegan said. “I'm just this small girl from Canada that only has a couple head of cows, and you're running with the big

016

guys down there. But it's cool to gain that perspective—this is people's income, this is how they live their life going from show to show.” She says the NAILE win was a great opportunity to show the quality of the beef animals coming from her family’s operation, but her personal highlight as a show exhibitor was winning showmanship at the Master Feeds Junior Beef Heifer Show at the Royal this year. She said that win, under judge Jon Gevelinger, was “amazing.” Winning all comes down to the quality of the animal, how it’s shown, and what a judge sees on a given day. It’s important for the exhibitor to hold up her end of the arrangement, and to work with—rather than against—the animal she’s showing. Reegan says there’s no substitute for knowing your calf well. “My biggest thing is knowing what your animal likes and what your animal doesn't, what they're susceptible to, what they

Top Stock Magazine / Spring 2019

“Winning is great but winning isn't everything. It's important to work hard, stay humble, and be kind to others. Try to be a friend with everybody in the show barn. Focus on what everybody loves feeling, and not worry about drama that is involved.” Reegan Sawyer

might get triggered by,” she said. “It's important to create a strong bond with the animal you're showing. You really don't know teamwork until your partner is a 1500-pound free spirit, right?”

“And just being with people that love and respect the industry as much as I do. It's not as big as it used to be, but there's still those people that go strong and are still making it what it is today.

But things don’t always go as planned. Reegan says the funniest thing that has happened to her in the ring is when she’s trying to move a back foot with her stick, “and their foot will move. But then they step on my stick and I'm sort of stuck in the middle of the ring. That's happened a few times more than I care to admit, actually.”

“It’s sort of all just one big family. Everybody’s here to do the same thing, which is show and have fun.”

She says when glitches and snafus happen in the ring, “you just make the best of it.” Reegan is a competitor, and she’ll admit she enjoys winning. But she clearly loves the friendship and camaraderie of the show community, and the way everyone supports each other. “There's really nothing quite like the rush of when you're in the champion drive and a judge comes over and slaps your steer. One of my all-time favorite things is when you see the hand coming down,” she said. 018

That unity of purpose keeps Reegan, and the rest of the showing world, grounded. There’s enough attitude, bullying, and drama outside of the business, she says, and there’s no place for it in the show game. If she was to offer advice to other juniors, it wouldn’t be about technique—it would be about stockmanship and sportsmanship. “Winning is great but winning isn't everything,” she said. “It's important to work hard, stay humble, and be kind to others. Try to be a friend with everybody in the show barn. Focus on what everybody loves feeling, and not worry about drama that is involved.” In fact, her role models are those exhibitors who take winning and losing in stride, and focus on the job at hand. “Girls that are a true class act in

and outside of the ring, that win gracefully and celebrate other people's successes,” she says. “If somebody beats them, they're not sore losers. They just brush it off and go to the next show and forget about it. I think it's like being a gracious winner, it is a very important thing.” Mel Curtis says Reegan is on the right track. “We're certainly proud of everything that Reegan's done this year,” she said. “We know how hard she's worked. She's a strong 4-H member, she's a great role model for young members, and she works really hard at home. She puts the hours in and she knows what it takes to win.”

large-animal acupuncturist, and plans to continue raising cross-bred cattle for club calves and steers. For now, though, nothing beats show day. “I’d show for anyone, anytime, any day,” she said. “Showing it isn't just my passion, it's really my life and what I love to do. “I mean when you're riding home with your trailer behind you and calves in the trailer, and you look back and you're like ‘I remember doing this,’ and ‘oh we made that memory.’ And you really can't trade it for anything else in the world, because there's nothing quite like it.”

Reegan’s love for cattle and the industry promises to be a lifelong passion. She intends to become a large-animal veterinarian or a

"OUTTALINE" WITH ANIMAL THERAPY

WORDS BY BRUCE DERKSEN

Kate Fullerton brings a new kind of animal therapy to Western Canadian producers.

ucked away in Central Alberta, Canada, virtually invisible from physical view and advertised strictly by word of mouth is a small but thriving animal therapy facility known as OuttaLine Equine & Bovine Therapy Practice. Established in the summer of 2017 and run solely by seventh-generation rancher Kate Fullerton, it offers new and repeat customers throughout

the province of Alberta everything from massage therapy and applied kinesiology to energy balancing techniques and essential oils. Kate’s journey to Blackfalds, Alberta, followed a meandering path throughout North America, connecting scattered locations and varied institutions of learning. Growing up on her family’s 270-head Black Angus ranch in Pincher Creek, Alberta, she first traveled to Lakeland College in Vermillion in 2008, where she received her Associates of Livestock Production, then ventured south to Texas A & M University, earning her Bachelor of Agricultural Communications

to me,” said Kate. In Vermillion and Texas, she studied animal husbandry, artificial insemination, anatomy and understanding cattle as a species, and after returning home she recognized that the task of taking care of her family’s horses and livestock was being outsourced to others in the industry. With the goal of eventually taking on this responsibility, she continued her education in B.C. Soon, she was working on her family’s and neighbours’ animals as a sideline, which

asked to work on a PBR bull that was having some issues and that kind of led me down the path of focusing more on the cattle side of the business rather than the horse side.” Working with this bucking bull gradually led her to working with show cattle and commercial livestock as well. “Right now, I think it’s split between the bucking bulls and show cattle with cattle at roughly 75 percent,” she said. “I just sort of focus my business on that side now. It’s where my passion is. I followed my

with an issue beyond what she knows she can fix, she recommends the owner has a veterinarian check it out first, especially if she suspects there could be serious problems. While she doesn’t work hand in hand with the veterinarians, she will point owners in their direction if needed and won’t work on more serious cases until the animal has been cleared or diagnosed by a vet. Her long list of varied services, delivered almost entirely through house calls, includes massage, chiropractic treatments, equine kinesiology, natural, nutritional, structural and cranial assessments and balances, herbal remedies, essential oils, principles

of movement, energy balancing techniques, acupressure and magnets. Each session differs and ranges in length from as short as 15 minutes to upwards of an hour and a half, depending on the animal and what its needs are. Some injuries and ailments are quick to address and bring relief, while others cannot be fixed with only a single treatment. Typically, Kate likes to use applied kinesiology with muscle testing to ascertain the problem, and from there she devises a strategy for addressing the ailment. “Muscle testing is not the treatment,” said Kate. The actual process of treatment involves massage therapy, acupressure and chiropractic work

along with essential oils, which some animals respond extremely well to. “It has a lot to do with energy, to be honest. I don’t use any kind of mechanical equipment,” she explained. “With the muscle testing of certain areas, I try to find what the issues are and the energy that I need to be providing moving forth with the treatment.” She reiterated that it is extremely important to know the anatomy of the animal and the specific areas that can be manipulated. Kate admitted that treating show cattle is a newer part of the cattle market for her, having recently entered the specific field during the last six months. She counts herself lucky to have worked on some high-quality animals, assisting with everything from lameness to pinched nerves. “I worked on a bull at Farmfair that ended up having a pinched nerve while he was in the wash rack and I got that sorted out with a lot of massage and direct pressure on his upper vertebrae.” She explained that tight muscles and pinched nerves are a considerable problem for show cattle standing in stalls. “It’s definitely an issue just because it’s not natural to stand in one spot for such a long time.” Kate was enthusiastic in relating more individual cases and their positive results to me. One was her own herd bull who had been injured in a fight. “Before he got hurt, you would not want to walk up to him in the pasture, but it’s really amazing how animals can figure out you are there to help them and not to hurt or annoy them.” She explained that when they brought the bull in, he walked straight up to her. “His treatment included a lot of massage and direct pressure, which are two

030

Top Stock Magazine / Spring 2019

of my biggest treatments when it comes to upper cervical (vertebrae) issues. Touching his muscles was like touching cement and this was affecting his vertebrae and spine.” After three weeks of treatment, he was sound and ended up breeding and excelling that summer. Another bull she worked on was Happy Camper of Two Bit Bucking Bulls. He wasn’t lame but veered to one side as he walked. Through testing, she discovered muscle and cranial issues were causing the problem and over the course of a few treatments that included massage, direct pressure and essential oils she got him back to normal again. “He is a phenomenal bull. Now I work on him before his big shows and make sure he is sound and happy, feeling his best before he goes to places like the PBR World Finals in Vegas,” she said.

“It sounds kind of silly, but I find that a lot of animals have issues with headaches, especially with cases using Hot Shots. Often, I can help them using essential oils or direct pressure on their C1 or their C2 vertebrae,” she explained. One example she provided was of a bull that initially would try to hook her with his horns, but over the course of such treatments she was able to relieve his major cranial and congestion issues. “With all animals, when there is a release of pressure, tightness and pain, there will be a physical response showing this, such as yawning, tears or the smacking of lips.” She explained this bull exhibited such a release through tears, an indication of “Yes, that’s it! I feel a lot better.” OuttaLine Equine & Bovine Therapy Practice is not yet considered mainstream by the entirety of the agricultural industry. When I asked Kate whether her practice was accepted throughout

Left Kate's patient, Happy Camper of Two Bit Bucking Bulls, faces Australia's Troy Wilkinson at the 2017 PBR Global Cup in Edmonton, Alberta at Rogers Place. Happy Camper was the PBR Canada Bull of the Year in 2018. ©© Andy Watson/BullStockMedia.com

"Most owners want to help their animals and when they feel they are at a loss, they are usually pretty accepting of anything and everything if they can get the animal feeling better and back to where it should be.” Kate Fullerton

the community in general, she replied with a laugh, “Yes and no! A lot of my work is based on applied kinesiology, so muscle testing and energy work to figure out what the issues are. Some of the older producers and people in the industry have told me they did not believe in what I was doing until I worked on their animal and they saw a difference. That’s been a really reassuring feeling.” Due to some clients not being entirely sold on the validity of less-traditional methods, she has learned to adjust her approach with producers. If she senses an owner is open to the idea of energy work and applied kinesiology, she will happily explain and demonstrate her preferred strategy. If they are hesitant, she will stick with more traditional massage and chiropractic treatment methods. “It comes down to reading the owner and figuring out what they are open to, but most owners want to help their animals and when they feel they are at a loss, they are usually pretty accepting of anything and everything if they can get the animal feeling better and back to where it should be.” When I asked Kate what she enjoyed most about her practice, she exclaimed, “The cattle! I love cattle. I’m one of those crazy cattle people. I have an undeniable love of the cattle industry and the producers I get to work with. Helping animals be at the top of their game, whether it’s the regular herd bull going out to breed commercial cows or it’s the next Grand Champion at Agribition or a bucking bull heading to the Calgary Stampede or the World Finals. If I can make them feel as good as they possibly can, that’s what matters to me.” Kate’s wish is to see OuttaLine develop further in the future. “I would definitely like to be a little more involved on the show cattle side of things, so I hope that continues to grow,” she said. She intends to maintain her busy pace of life, striving to convince producers of the benefits of her practice. “I work a lot but don’t really consider it work because I love it and I can be around cattle. That’s where my passion is.” From what I’ve learned about her and sensing the energy and the bounds of this passion she displays, I have no doubt that Kate Fullerton will take OuttaLine Equine & Bovine Therapy Practice wherever she desires it to go. 032

“We knew the 2018 females were a very tough group to compete against,” he said. “It was exciting to be one of the top 10 finalists. ‘Pride’ likely describes my feeling as we waited for the final selection.”

“This year he won Farmfair in Edmonton, and he won Agribition Supreme. He was Show Bull of the Year again in Canada, and in December he was named World Champion Bull,” said co-owner Glen Gabel. Agribition was Echo’s only show this year. She earned her way into the Supreme ring by winning the Champion Black Angus Female. Blair said they went into the Supreme event with no real expectations;

Blair said that although the RBC Supreme is “the Super Bowl of the livestock industry,” the magnitude of the win didn’t set in right away. “I don’t think you can fully comprehend how cool it is to be slapped RBC Champion for a few weeks,” he

That was at Agribition in 2016. Two days later he was Champion Black Angus Bull Calf and Reserve Champion in the Semex Challenge. Two days after that, he was at his mother’s side when she became the Grand Champion Black Angus Female. And in a couple more days they won the Supreme. With such winning ways, the owners could be forgiven if they felt a bit cocky going into the 2018 Supreme judging. But that was far from the case. As Gabel acknowledged, the other bulls earned their way into the ring too—nothing is a given. “You know he's good,” Gabel said. “It's just that there's a lot of good bulls out there and there's a lot of quality stock out there. We're just fortunate that he continued to develop as a yearling and into his two-year-old year, and just got stronger and stronger as the fall went on.” And the winning moment? “It's always a thrill. Anybody who says it isn't, they've either won too much or they don't have feelings and emotions. But to me it's always a thrill when you get slapped. There's a lot of great breeders from Western Canada and the United States that come up to Agribition and Farmfair, and to rise to the top of both those hills is pretty phenomenal.” The success hasn’t inflated International’s ego either. “The nice part is he's a good bull to be around disposition-wise,” Gabel said. “He's phenomenal. To me he's the complete package.” Above all, he is a productive sire whose progeny are carrying on his long, deep body type—the bottom line, as Gabel said, as that's where the meat is.

“I don’t think you can fully comprehend how cool it is to be slapped RBC Champion for a few weeks. It really sets in as you attend other events throughout the fall and you get to visit with breeders from all breeds." Kevin Blair

His experience co-owning International with Miller Wilson Angus has reinforced for him what he and most cattlemen already know: the real strength of the beef business is its people. Gabel has had some health issues that caused him to miss Farmfair, but he was able to attend Agribition in a wheelchair. “There's a lot of support among Angus breeders. It's quite remarkable, the friends that come and support you and that are there to congratulate you or whatever,” he said. His partnership with Miller Wilson Angus, struck over the course of a 20-minute major purchase decision, has become a close friendship. “Lee and Don Wilson started out as partners. I had never had any dealings with them, or them with me, prior to this. And this turned into a friendship. They have just been a the most supportive friends that I could have ever asked for, the best partners that I could ever partner with. They've just been great, great people. “It’s a partnership that turned into a great friendship. That's probably a nice way to say it.”
