When you step into the show ring, you want to win. Everybody wants to win.

ut obviously everybody can’t win. How do you compete at your best, while still respecting the other exhibitors? How do you accept the judge’s decision when you don’t win? In other words, what is ring etiquette? Top Stock spoke with three experienced exhibitors and judges to find out what they see as a sporting attitude—and a winning attitude—among competitors in the show ring: ▶▶ Dave Hasson owned and operated Gold-Bar Livestock with his family is Ariss, Ontario just outside of Guelph. Dave has judged numerous cattle shows around the world as well as serving as Past President of the Ontario Angus Association, Past President of the Canadian Hereford Association and past Investment Director for the Ontario 4H Foundation.

“There's a respect that we give fellow contestants when we're in the ring,” he said. “To a point.” “At a point in time we take advantage of every opportunity that we can find, as a professional showman, that would hopefully help make our animal more appealing to the judge or give the judge a better view of our animal—at the same time respecting other people that are in the show ring.” He, Hertz and Hasson all agree that it is definitely not appropriate to block a judge’s view of a competitor, for example. But according to Soules, some of the tricks of the trade are fair game. If he has a smaller animal in front of him, he will follow a bit more closely so the judge will immediately see the comparison. If he has the smaller animal, he’ll try to maximize the distance. None of these tactics interferes with your competitor’s ability to show their animal. “If I can find a hill where I'm going to stop, I'll stop and pull up on a hill and make my competition stop in the hole behind it,” he said. “If there's light coming through the ceiling, I try to get my animal where there's light if I can

“So if it's a difference of five feet I'm going to take advantage of that five feet and pull up here to get those little advantages that you're looking for,” he said. Showing correctly gives your animal its best opportunity to be properly evaluated, and good showmanship can give you an advantage. As Hertz says, “you just want to make sure that you catch that judge's attention, and showmanship is a huge part of that. “You want to make sure that you always

“Sportsmanship goes a long way with your fellow competitors and your fellow breeders, and those are the people that you want to sell your cattle to. Having a good attitude toward them and towards the animal is really important,” she said. “I think that's a huge thing in winning or losing gracefully: being happy for others when they win, and just taking it and learning from it and getting better from there.” Hasson sees it the same way. He says showing is “basically a rudimentary form of advertising.” “It gives you material to post to the public in one form or another, why they should consider your genetics over other genetics. It's just an important part of developing the whole industry.”
"Some folks can't lose very graciously. But you’re not going to win every time. You gotta learn how to do both and accept it."
As Soules puts it, “there's a competitive nature built in to the human instinct that's going to be very competitive, otherwise you're not going to really show cattle.” But the point of showing, with all its rules and customs and etiquette, isn’t to collect trophies. Whether you win or lose, your goal is to advance the herd’s genetics and improve the industry as a whole.

“These kids raised these projects from when the animals were born, or got the animals when they were really young calves,” Gabel said. “So I think there’s a lot of pride in the upbringing of those animals. There’s a lot of work and a lot of sweat equity that goes into starting those projects and seeing them through to fruition.” “Maybe the fun parts of it are just kind of prideful. I think everybody probably doesn’t always enjoy feeding every day, or working hair every day, or practiceshowing every day,” she said. “But I think the pride that it instills in the kids probably brings out the fun side of it too.” Attending events like Summer Synergy is another reward, she said, where all the work they’ve put in over the past year and more pays off in satisfaction, or in scholarship opportunities.

"It was unreal at Calgary. There were some really good pairs there. Not that I don’t have faith in myself, but there's not many times a bred heifer wins Supreme." Cole was doing his part to build on the limited success of their previous show experiences. “I was taking courses for my grade eleven year to free up my schedule in the fall, so when I go to Agribition and Lloydminster for the week, I wouldn’t be so busy with homework.” His entire family was involved. “My younger brother and sister are into it, too. My parents take us to shows, support us, help with everything back in the barn and always tell us to never give up and keep trying. Austin has also been a huge help with clipping, fitting, feeding and showing.” Together, Anastasia and Cole peaked at the right time during Summer Synergy and the Calgary Stampede. “All I really wanted was to win the Maintainer breed class, see some friends from the year before and learn new things. It was unreal at Calgary. There were some really good pairs there. Not that I don’t have faith in myself, but there's not many times a bred heifer wins Supreme.”
48
FALL 2019
Cole took home a cow-hide banner for winning Supreme Champion Commercial Beef Female, was interviewed on the big screen and received a cheque that will come in handy down the road. The family is already thinking about next year. Anastasia is bred to a commercial Simmental/ Angus calving-ease bull, and depending on the calf, Cole would like to show the pair in 2020 and attend Summer Synergy again. They are also considering flushing her and finding a good purebred Maine-Anjou or higherpercentage Maintainer bull to register some offspring. “I could hopefully start a Maintainer herd,” he said. The 16-year old isn’t completely sure of his own future plans, though studies in agriculture business or computer engineering may be in the works. Whatever Cole decides to do, there is a good chance it may include a Maintainer herd, with a past Supreme Champion Commercial Female as part of the foundation.

Halley Adams captures Synergy
Supreme Purebred WORDS BY BRUCE DERKSEN
W
hen Greenwood Vixon JJP 17E and her heifer calf were crowned the Supreme
Champion Purebred Beef Female at the Calgary Stampede, wrapping up Summer Synergy 2019, Halley Adams was naturally very excited. Her excitement, however, was liberally divided between her family and sisters. “It’s a family affair—my mom and dad, grandma and grandpa and my two younger sisters, Keely and Kasey. It’s all of our win because they put in a lot of hard work, too, and we all work together.” The praise Halley dished out was aimed at the people behind Ter-Ron Farms of Forestburg, Alberta, a family-run mixed grain and purebred Red Angus ranch. The operation was started by her grandparents Terry and Sharon Adams, and today they raise cattle with her parents Rob and Maureen Adams.
“It was a really good week,” said Halley. “Everybody is very excited, but it’s a very competitive atmosphere as well.” Greenwood Vixon JJP 17E, or Vix as she is affectionately called, sired by 74-51 Sudden Look 1023 and out of Edwards Vixon 269C, was purchased by the Adams in December 2017 as a calf from Greenwood Angus of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, at the annual consignment Angus Collection Sale in Olds. “I really liked how much power and body she had. She also has a showy and fancy look to her, so I thought she would be a really cool heifer to help build my herd of Black Angus. She is good footed, and her mom is a very nice cow with an excellent udder, which is important to me.” At the time, the Adams were primarily raising Red Angus and had just started to dip into some

Together with her Musgrave Stunner heifer calf, the pair claimed the Summer Synergy Purebred Black Angus Champion banner in Olds. “I thought they looked pretty good and I was hopeful they would do well, but you never have any clue until the show happens. There were lots of good cattle there. I was hopeful.” After the breed division win, the group traveled to the Calgary Stampede show ring for the Supreme Champion show, where they faced some tough competition. “I was very nervous, but I thought I had a really good chance.

The purebred show judge, Christie Gabel, told me she really liked her, but talked up some of the other champions, too, so I wasn’t sure.” For her Supreme Show win, Halley received a banner along with a cheque. Although she was genuinely happy with the massive win, her humility once again shone through as she talked about the week. “It’s a really fun opportunity to go and participate for a week in the summer. There is a big group of friends and we’ve been showing together for quite a few years, so it’s always fun to see each other at the cattle shows. They are
some of my best friends, so I get really excited to see them, make some new friends and go through the week with them.”
"There is a big group of friends and we’ve been showing together for years, so it’s always fun to see each other at the cattle shows."
Halley showed the pair through the late summer, competing at the Alberta Junior Angus Show and the Canadian Junior All Breed Show in Bashaw, Alberta, and she planned to continue into the fall season. “Hopefully we can take them to some fall shows and they keep coming along as a pair. I’m just excited for them,” she said. “She has the potential to be a foundation cow in our Black Angus herd.” Halley plans to transfer from Red Deer College to the University of Alberta in Edmonton to complete the third year of her Bachelor of Science in Animal Health, but she wants to continue showing cattle. “I’ll definitely be involved with my family. We take a string to the fall shows so I’ll be able to stay involved in it that way.” The obvious family bond Halley holds will very likely guide her to even greater accomplishments in the future, and showing cattle seems to have a firm grip on the route that future will take.

RIGHT WAY BEEF RATIONS Specifically designed rations to provide the energy for optimal growth, but does not use high levels of starch to achieve these results. Right Way Beef Rations are a high energy, highly digestible fiber based feed that can provide as much energy as barley without the high level of starch. • By not using high levels of starch the rumen maintains a consistent pH so intakes and fiber digestion is more consistent and better utilized. • Contains: - All vitamins and minerals for optimal growth. - Zinpro Organic Trace Minerals to assure higher absorption rates resulting in better scrotal development and an improved immune system. - Has Diamond V Yeast for optimal fermentation in the rumen.
