reetings – I hope this issue of the Voice finds you all in the best shape possible with this world being as uncertain as it has ever been. I can say personally, I look forward to 2021 being a remarkable year ahead for all of us. It is my hope that everyone made the best of the Christmas holidays and the lockdowns that seem to be dotted across our country. But, moving on! I wish to thank every single person for logging on to our CLA webinars this fall. We will be doing some more in the spring and welcome ideas for topics that would benefit a broad spectrum of CLA members. We are looking forward to some fun and educational ideas from the membership. The Limousin Legacy project has had amazing uptake, and that is because of all of you, whether you are taking time to do your entire cow herd, bull sale bulls, or hand selecting a few. It is your dedication to this project that is making it a success. We are closing in very quickly on the number of samples for the entire 2019 year, just with the project being open from October to present date, and we have almost an entire year to go. I am extremely excited for the response from everyone on this project. This year, the CLA will be seeing a change in location. We have chosen to part ways with the Canadian Simmental Association and the office will be moving in summer 2021. We will be going down to only two staff – Laura Ecklund as General Manager and Nicole Scott as Registry and Member Relations. Shayla Chappell has relocated with the Canadian Shorthorn Association to Saskatchewan. It will be some adjustment but will ultimately lead to great success going forward. We are looking for members to join our committees and give input on where the Association heads going forward. In order for us to correctly represent the members, it is important to hear the voices of those around us. I would like to take this forum to recognize the loss of a matriarch of our Limousin breed, Ruth McBride, of Goldenview Farms. As a little girl, I enjoyed when Ruth and Jim visited my parents. She was a wealth of knowledge on Limousin pedigrees and is someone that all of us can strive to be in our cattle industry. Good luck on calving and bull sale season.

L’Association des membres juniors Limousin de l’Ontario sera l’hôte cette année du Show Impact des CJLA, nous avons donc hâte de nous rendre (dépendant de Covid) à Spencerville, en Ontario, du 28 juillet au 31 juillet prochain. J’ai travaillé étroitement avec les membres du comité organisateur, et je suis très satisfaite concernant le programme prévu d’activités. Le fait saillant de cette semaine consistera en une croisière en bateau autour des Milles Iles. Tous les membres juniors seront bienvenues, et des bovins seront disponibles pour ceux qui voudraient en emprunter pour la compétition. Toutes les personnes intéressées par la race Limousin sont invitées à se joindre à nous au cours de l’après-midi du 30 juillet, alors qu’on aura la présence d’un conférencier et qu’on effectuera une visite d’un parc d’engraissement. L’Assemblé Annuelle Générale du CLA se tiendra de concert avec le Show Impact, soit vendredi le 30 juillet à 19 :00. Nous invitions tous les éleveurs Limousin à venir à leur assemblée, afin d’être au fait des dernières nouvelles de votre association et pour faire entndre votre voix.

The Ontario Junior Limousin Association will be hosting this year’s Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show and we look forward to (COVID-19 regulations pending) travelling to Spencerville, Ont. July 28th – July 31st. I have been working closely with the committee and I am very excited about the events we have planned for you. The highlight of the week will be a boat cruise around the Thousand Islands. All juniors are welcome to participate, and cattle will be available to those that would like to borrow. Limousin enthusiasts are invited to join us the afternoon of July 30th for a feedlot tour and speaker. In conjunction with the Impact Show, the CLA Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday July 30th at 7:00 pm. CLA members, please plan to attend this meeting to stay up to date on the Association and to have your voice heard. CLA BOARD OF DIRECTOR NOMINATIONS
Nomination forms are now available for the CLA Board of Directors on our website. They must be submitted to the CLA by April 1, 2021. Nominations must be done ahead of time and will not be accepted from the floor during the meeting. I wish all members a successful calving and bull sale season.

All breeds do not need the same scrotal size, which means you can’t compare Limousin with other breeds because scrotal size will be different, and Limousin will need less scrotal size than other breeds to do the job. Scrotal circumference is a trait which is moderately to highly heritable. Research indicates that testicle size is an excellent indicator of age at puberty of a sire's daughters and is also related to seminal quality and quantity.

BRINGING DREAMS TO LIFE Nicholas Zimmerman gets his start in the purebred business with quality Limousin genetics.
I
t is tough to find something more inspiring than seeing a young person with passion bringing their dreams to life. Look to Clifford, Ont. and you will find just that, as 19-year-old Nicholas Zimmerman grows his newly founded purebred Limousin operation, Zimmerman Cattle Company.

Nicholas’ father Keith Zimmerman and uncle Wayne Zimmerman operated a dairy on their 300 acres of land before starting a commercial beef herd of predominantly Limousin cattle. Today their commercial Limousin herd consists of 90 breeding females, many of which go back to genetics from Smart Limousin and other local Limousin breeders. This past year, Nicholas decided to delve into the purebred Limousin business in a big way. “I really like how our commercial Limousin cattle develop,” Nicholas says, “their muscling and docility are characteristics that make the breed exceptional.” After starting out with a few commercial Limousin of his own last year, Nicholas purchased some registered females he had his eyes on to begin his purebred herd. In the fall, he partnered with Payne Livestock and purchased their red homozygous polled RPY Paynes Rush 1H ET bull sired by JYF Chunk 35C and out of EDW Beach Body. “I am really excited to see what he does for my herd,” Nicholas and Payne Livestock are also selling semen on the bull, which is a first for Nicholas. He intends to utilize artificial insemination and embryo

transfer more in the future as he focuses in on genetics that work best for his operation. Building an elite herd of the highest quality is his goal.
Livestock. The Zimmerman’s grow their own corn for silage and grain for cattle feed and feed a mix of corn silage and hay to cut down on their hay requirements.
He is off to an excellent start, investing in top females from B Bar Cattle, Balamore Farm Limited, Carlsruhe Cattle Company, Clark Cattle, Greenwood, New Life Limousin, Smart Limousin and Wulf Cattle to add to his growing herd of 20 registered animals. He also registered his first two animals with his own NKZ prefix this past year.
When making his buying decisions Nicholas does his research on not only the visual appraisal of the animal but also takes a look at the EPDs, data and ratios on his intended purchases. He has learnt a great deal about the genetics in the Limousin breed as he looks to source progeny of leading sires and proven dams.
As is the case in many Ontario operations, the cattle overwinter in the barn. Calving begins around the 1st of February and their calves are marketed at Brussels

“Becoming a member of the Canadian Limousin Association has been a very good experience,” Nicholas says, “everyone has been very welcoming and helpful.” Among those who have been of great help to Nicholas in getting started is TaDomi Hunt, another young Limousin breeder from just north of the Zimmerman’s in Hanover, Ont. Nicholas’ advice for the next person who may be wanting to start a purebred Limousin herd, “Ask for some help and people’s opinion and research into things. Plenty of people are willing to help you.”

Nicholas, who also works full time at Grey Ridge Eggs in Listowel, Ont., intends to grow his herd up to 50 head of high-quality females. He is looking forward to continuing to bring in a variety of genetics into his herd. He also has his sights set on entering the showring someday – something that he did not grow up doing, but is keen to get into with his purebred animals. His ultimate goal is to eventually have his own open house and private treaty bull sale, selling to other commercial herds in the area as well as other seedstock breeders.

As Limousin continues to excel in terms of carcass and yield, Nicholas feels that this strength of the breed will continue to make it a soughtafter choice by bull buyers. This, along with continuing to get Limousin youth, including those from commercial operations, like Nicholas, excited about and involved in the breed, will be a recipe for success as the Limousin breed moves into this new decade. It is young people like Nicholas, who bring passion and excitement to our breed, that keep us all young at heart and passionate about what we do and why we do it.

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION The CJLA would like to thank you for all of the support in 2020, despite the difficulties of the year. We have had many setbacks, with cancellations and postponements, but we were still well supported and we thank you for that. It is greatly appreciated by all! The CJLA Board has been and will continue to work on junior incentive ideas for the members of the CJLA. Stay tuned for updates on the Facebook and Twitter pages. The 2021 CJLA Impact Show is to be held in Spencerville, Ont., from July 28 to August 1, 2021. This is dependent on COVID-19 restrictions and whether we are capable of having an event such as this show. We are excited to hopefully get back in the show ring together and get a chance to have a great time in Spencerville. The show committee is planning the Impact Show to be as similar as possible to the original one planned. We can’t wait to see you all at the end of July in Spencerville! place in Canadian Limousin history. She is survived by her husband Jim, who still resides at their High River home. Jim and Ruth met while serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force and following their service careers, entered into the airline industry in a large way. Jim was a founding member of the Manitoba Limousin Association and was also a founder/member of the CLA and NALF. Together, Jim and Ruth operated Goldenview Farms at High River, Alta. – their fullblood operation was known far and wide in North America. Together with Nordic Farms they shared the first Limousin Leader of the Year award in 1975. They held their first “Stampede Spectacular” Production Sale in July 1976 and made a notable $60,000 sale for half interest in their bull Goldenview Hercules to a ranch in Oklahoma in 1979. Jim was chairman of the successful 1982 Limousin Congress in Calgary. In 1985 they sold the first ‘million-dollar Limousin female’ with quarter interest in a fullblood female selling for $250,000. They dispersed their full French herd in the 1988 with 104.75 lots averaging $9,530 and grossing $998,350. Those who were in the Limousin business during those days remember Jim and Ruth as pivotal and influential breeders. Ruth will be remembered as a keen cattlewoman and quick wealth of knowledge about pedigrees by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Cattle have been a big part of Kira’s life since she was very young. She was one of the first youth to participate in the Cleaver Kids pilot project at 8 years of age and was a 4-H member for 12 years. In her final year of 4-H she was a provincial ambassador for the program. She became a member of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association (CJLA) in 2016, registered KLA as her own herd prefix and started K. Axley Limousin. This past August she joined the CJLA board of directors and was elected as Secretary. After graduating from high school last year, she is now taking the Animal Science Technology program majoring in Livestock Sciences at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alta. Upon receiving her diploma from Lakeland College, she plans to continue her schooling to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences and eventually work as a livestock nutritionist. “Growing up I have always loved the Limousin breed, but it wasn’t until we began to expand and diversify our commercial herd that I really began to appreciate everything that the breed had to offer,” Kira recalls, “The natural muscling that the breed contributes is what continues to be a strong selling

ailing from south of Czar, Alta., 19 year old Kira Axley lives and breathes every aspect of farm life on her family’s cattle operation, North Slope Farms. Together with her brother Karsten and her parents, Eugene and Sylvia, the family runs 250 purebred Limousin cows along with 100 Limousin influenced commercial cows. The family offers select bulls by private treaty each year. Every November they market their calves at their local auction market. For the past 30 years their calves have been purchased by two family run operations in Ontario and one in Alberta. This relationship has remained strong as these feedlot operators have been pleased with the quality of the calves they receive, their performance on feed and the yield they garner at slaughter time.

point for me as it easily adds pounds to the scale when shipping calves in the fall or selling finished steers in the spring. The quiet disposition that the Limousin breed posses is another factor that has me hooked.” Kira also remarks that the tidy udders and the natural mothering ability of Limousin cows along with the vigour possessed by the newborn calves are all traits she finds appealing about the breed. The Axley family has moved much of their purebred herd into their commercial spring calving group. Limousin cows are able to get the job done themselves, rarely needing intervention at calving or help to get newborn calves up and sucking, which saves a lot of headaches at calving time. In the range country where the Axley’s run their herd, structural soundness and good feet and legs
“We aim to produce bulls that have the traditional, heavily defined Limousin hip and that can go out and work for years on end without breaking down structurally,” Kira explains, “Same goes for our females, we look for a well structured, solid footed female that can go out and travel on the large pastures we graze and make the long walk home in the fall.”
The Axley’s are big believers in the benefits that Limousin genetics bring to all facets of the Canadian beef industry. They have seen the benefits of running a predominantly Limousin based commercial herd, and their loyal buyers have reported back the gains and superior muscling of the cattle that go into their feedlots. This translates into more saleable product at slaughter without the wasted pounds of fat, which is a valuable asset for

are imperative. They appreciate the natural muscling and hip that their Limousin animals have without excessive feed needs and also note the longevity of their females and bulls.
everyone along the supply chain as we work together to produce beef more efficiently. “Going forward, I hope that the Limousin breed will be recognized as one of the top breeds of choice when crossing to raise feeder cattle,” Kira comments, “I think that the cattle industry as a whole can work towards this by really recognizing and highlighting the increased yield received from the Limousin influenced carcass as well as begin to select calves to enter into the finishing feedlots that posses the Limousin quality characteristics.” Growing up on an operation that breeds seedstock and raises them in the same manner as their commercial herd, Kira has experienced firsthand how their Limousin cattle work for them – not the other way around. She sees that the best way that seedstock breeders can serve the commercial sector is by continuing to breed for productivity and soundness. “One of the biggest lessons that I have learned as I have been growing my herd and selling the seedstock off them is that functionality comes way before eye appeal and show ring success. The more I begin to see my herd grow and perform this becomes more and more prevalent.”

She credits her Dad, Eugene, with guiding and teaching her how to build a strong cowherd and supporting her throughout the years as she developed and showed her cattle.

37 “MY GREATEST ADVICE TO ANYONE STARTING ON THIS JOURNEY IS TO START SMALL AND FOCUS ON THE BASICS." “My greatest advice to anyone starting on this journey is to start small and focus on the basics to build a structurally sound and functional cow herd that will be able to support you for many years to come. Don’t get caught up in comparing yourself to other large, successful operations which have been going for a long time.” Kira has laid a tremendous foundation with the majority of her herd being her own breeding. She also added a couple of females from Willowcrest’s herd dispersal and a young female from Nith Valley Limousin. Her females are hardworking ranch cows that do exactly what the Limousin breed is renowned for – bringing home big, beefy calves every fall without fail. She adds, “Don’t get discouraged if your cattle are not competing in the way that you are wanting because in the end you are eventually going to find someone who admires your style of cattle and operation.” For the past three consecutive years, her 4-H market steers have been slapped Club Grand Champion and District Reserve Champion Market Steers. Another proud moment for Kira was winning the Supreme Female championship in her 4-H District for four consecutive years with females that were all related.
Kira’s plans for the future include continuing her herd of purebred cattle that she has started. She would like to introduce new genetics, even potentially some from Australia. She would also like to show her cattle at larger shows across Canada and continue to dabble in selling prospect steers. As shown by Kira’s back-to-back success, Limousin and Limousin cross steers are tremendously competitive as 4-H projects! It is wonderful to see a recent 4-H alumni combining her passions and sharing that with other youth – and she is only getting started.

T
he purebred business is a people business. Yes, you need to have quality livestock, but ultimately it is up to the producer to be able to make the sale and provide customer service that will have buyer’s returning year after year. Customer service ignites loyalty, attracts more customers and fuels the most powerful advertising of all: word of mouth. Customer service can be felt by potential buyers long before they make a purchase, and exemplary customer service – before, during and after a sale – can leave a lasting impression. The same can be said for a less than stellar experience.
As Will Rogers said, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” People want to do business with people they trust. It only makes sense that buyers want to purchase from operations that appear well-run and organized with managers that are competent and knowledgeable. They want to deal with a seller who is genuine and shows integrity. Potential buyers, especially the younger demographic, also want to be associated with operations that have a ‘cool’ factor. One of the best ways to build lasting relationships is to simply get involved! Show up to local,

provincial and national events, be positive and fun to be around, and show support to fellow breeders. Speak positively about your breed and other breeders. Attend as many sales and events as you can and put some thought into how you can best support your breed and other breeders, even in small ways.

Showring success can certainly make you the talk of the breed. Everyone wants to be affiliated with a winner. While this is only one of many ways to market your stock and operation, there is an undeniable advantage to being known as a consistent winner in the showring if that is important to your target clientele. Along these same lines, we all know that certain individuals in every breed are influencers. They are the movers and shakers in your breed that already have the respect of your industry peers. For breeders just starting out – surround yourself with other producers with values that align with your own, and you will find yourself in good company. You are likely to learn from them along the way and
it is always nice to have the stamp of approval of someone else in the industry that you respect. Customers with similar values will naturally be drawn to you. Incentives can be a great way to draw customers to your operation and keep them as loyal clientele. Financial incentives such as offering to pay the entry fees for a purchased heifer in an upcoming junior show, volume discounts, and the like can all be useful marketing and customer service avenues. Management of purchased animals such as extended feeding, breeding, showing, etc. can also be very appealing to some buyers, especially when dealing with partnerships. Think outside of the box as to what other incentives your operation may be able to offer such as education opportunities. Above all else, foster friendships and genuine relationships with your customers. Provide the information and tools for your clients to make a decision and assist them if they have questions, but after that, let your livestock speak for themselves.
As your grow your clientele it is wise to develop a system for keeping track of your customers in an organized manner. Logging all contact information, directions to their farm, past purchases and how they turned out, and perhaps some personal details such as their spouse and kid’s names, etc. will help you greatly through the years. Whether you are chatting with them about their calf crop or your upcoming sale, delivering a bull, or sending out Christmas cards – having your customers in an organized ‘database’, whether paper or digital, will serve you well. In multi-generational or larger operations there are often multiple people who may be making sales for the business. Ideally, keep a consistent point of contact with each buyer, whoever is handling a sale should complete the sale from start to finish. Keep lines of communication open behind the scenes and make everyone in your operation well aware of pending sales and pricing. When you have made a sale, as soon as the cheque clears, transfer registration papers to the new owners. It is the buyers right and your responsibility as a breeder, and doing so in a timely fashion makes the new owner feel good about their purchase and having done business with a well-managed operation.

Follow up and check in with your clients, and even better, when possible, make a personal visit to their farm. Personal visits build relationships and help you to learn about your clients and their needs. Take the time to see their herd, ask how their calves performed and tell them about value-added marketing opportunities for their calves such as breed specific feeder sales. For large operations, if it is in your wheelhouse to do so, consider opportunities around your own genetic specific feeder sales. Always make a point of finding and speaking with your customers when you are both at the same events, shows or sales. Also make a point of seeking out new acquaintances at these type of events – you will build your network much quicker by mingling with new friends and inviting them into your ‘circle’ than by sticking strictly to only chatting with your old buddies. Pick up the tab whenever you take clients out to a meal – this can be a great way to socialize and build relationships outside of the business transaction. Inevitably, issues are going to arise at times with stock you have sold. Address problems quickly and efficiently. Listen to your customer’s concern and how they feel it would best be corrected and work together to come to an agreeable resolution. Do your own due diligence in drawing up written terms for your sale or

No matter your business, personal, handwritten thank you notes still go a long way. Even a personal email is appreciated in these days of mass advertising e-mails filling up our inboxes. The seemingly insignificant is significant when it comes to customer service and can set you apart from the rest.

It can be human nature to fall into the trap of negativity and complaining. No one enjoys being around a Negative Nelly and in the end a negative attitude will only drag your operation and your breed down. Whether it’s online or in your face-to-face conversations try to keep a glass half full attitude. Your positivity will spread and you may be surprised at how it attracts people to want to be around you. And in the end, people buy from people they know, people they respect, and people they admire. I think Maya Angelou’s quote sums it up perfectly, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Calving season is upon us all as we prepare for the upcoming bull sale season. Membership for NALF as well as the CLA has had to adjust for event changes and sales through the challenging COVID issue. It has not only impacted markets, but forced many sales to go online through the last 9 months. In spite of it all, most of our sales have remained strong as compared to years past.
NALF has also had some very positive advancements concerning its National Cattle Evaluation conducted through IGS over the summer and 4th quarter of 2020. Adjustments through the second half of 2020 benefited our EPDs for both Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle rather dramatically. In mid-August, the milk EPD was adjusted for all participating IGS cooperators which resulted in an improved milk EPD, particularly on high growth sires that were positive to the milk EPD for many of our sires within the NALF herdbook. This change was made along with IGS updating the new genomic marker subsets for each trait as well. With the new updated marker subset incorporated into the evaluation, our weight traits now have the equivalency of nearly 25 progeny on the ground when cattle are genomically enhanced. This has allowed the progressive end of our breeders to make quicker and more accurate matings as they look to improve their overall EPD sets on their herds.
Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle improved on average between .15 - .20 on the marbling EPD with this switch. Carcass weight EPD averages improved 3-4 pounds. This change moved the Purebred Limousin classifications much closer to the “zero” line on the marbling EPD and Lim-Flex® classification’s improved dramatically as well. Previously the average marbling EPD for the hybrid was running near .05, with the switch, Active LF sires are now running at .18 and LF Non-Parents are at .20. These improvements came with only slight declines in average ribeye, backfat and yield grade EPDs which Limousin cattle are known for throughout the business. Limousin REA is still far and away out in front of other breeds here in the U.S. This combined with the breeds superior maternal traits, weight traits, and enhanced docility, Limousin EPDs have never looked better across the board! This is a credit to the breeders and membership of the Limousin breed who have continued to mate cattle that not only excel genetically, but can contribute dramatically to the commercial cattle business throughout the United States.
The next enhancement to our EPDs should be incorporated into the NCE around mid-December, by the time you read this article, thanks to Wulf Cattle and other NALF members. After months of work and beta runs at IGS, nearly 46,000 head of carcass records of Wulf BeefBuilder cattle will be included into the production run at IGS. This will not only increase accuracy of many sires and their related progeny on carcass traits throughout the herdbook, but is a leap forward towards capturing actual slaughter data at the packing house for carcass weight, marbling, ribeye, backfat and yield grade phenotypes on pedigree traceable cattle. This will put NALF at the forefront of capturing actual carcass phenotypes among breed associations throughout the U.S. NALF is blessed to have many members that are also cattle feeders within its association that have all contributed to this effort and continue to do so in addition to the carcass records Wulf has contributed. Hunt Limousin, Symens Bros. Limousin, Lewis Limousin, Running Creek Limousin, and Lawrence Limousin have all contributed to this effort as well. This also is supplemented by many other NALF members who continue to understand the importance of submitting ultrasound scan data on their cattle and continue to do so. In closing, the NALF staff and membership would wish you all a Happy New Year and very successful calving season and upcoming bull sale season this Spring!

Maybe the most exciting and positive adjustments for Limousin cattle EPDs came in early November. After several Beta runs by IGS during the fall, carcass traits where positively impacted with the switch to IGS incorporating updated USMARC data for carcass traits into the IGS National Cattle Evaluation. Positive impacts occurred to both the marbling and carcass weight EPD as a result of this change.

The dreaded 2020 is now behind us and with the new year comes new beginnings! Or, at least that’s everyone’s hope – for this pandemic to subside so we can get back to some degree of normalcy! 2021 has started off very mild here in BC and although this is a welcome reprieve from what we are used to, it can only be assumed that the worst is yet to come! Well weather wise anyway, maybe a good shot of subzero temperatures is exactly what this dreaded virus needs! As an eternal optimist, I’m going to be telling myself that when the air is hurting my face!

Much like the rest of the country, Limousin happenings have been pretty much nil in BC. There is still lots of enthusiasm in the breed here and as we come into a new calving and bull sale season, we are reminded of why we chose Limousin. Our breed has done such an incredible job in the last 15-20 year of increasing docility, fertility, and calving ease, while maintaining our superb carcass traits, that it’s always a joy to welcome new Limo babies. That joy allows us to promote these genetics to our commercial cattlemen with confidence and conviction! There are only just over a dozen Limousin Association members in BC, but our motto has always been quality over quantity. Some of these members will be offering purebred and fullblood genetics this spring, so watch for their advertisements and be sure to keep BC on your summer travel bucket list – you won’t be disappointed!

Many ALA members will be offering a selection of Limousin bulls for your consideration this spring. Limousin breeders in Alberta are some of the most progressive operations in North America, and I encourage anyone looking to enhance their bull battery to peruse the selection out west. Sale dates can be found in the 2021 ALA calendar. The ALA has been quiet since our late AGM in October 2021. However, the board of directors has been working to organize our new pilot project. Rules and entry forms for the new “Event Draw” can be found on the ALA website. This draw will enhance the ALA’s marketing reach and offer a certificate to non-ALA members for the purchase of a Limousin animal from breeders who host the ALA booth or exhibit cattle at approved events across the country; each event is an independent draw, so we encourage everyone who is planning to show cattle or attend an event to enter.

Please note that with the approval of the new bylaws, membership structure has changed and will be implemented for the 2021-2022 year. Memberships are no longer by farm – they will now be individual. Pricing for the first membership at the same address will remain at $50. The board is discussing how to price other memberships at the same address. Please note that every individual who is involved in a committee or on the board of directors will need to be a paid member. For example, if two people from the same address are listed, and both are directors, both members will need to pay a membership fee. As we transition to a new membership structure, we will also be requesting that members fill in the membership form on a yearly basis (beginning in May 2021). NEWS SASKATCHEWAN Greetings from frosty Saskatchewan! The fall sale season has come and gone along with the Christmas season! Happy New Year to everyone! The Limousin sales in Saskatchewan were a huge success and couldn't help but leave breeders with a renewed interest in the new bloodlines for the upcoming breeding season. A huge congratulations to Greenwood Limousin, Scott, Jackie, Jayden and Jaxon Payne on their “Award of Distinction” presented by Vice President, Wayne Burgess at the Western Select Sale on December 10, 2020. The weather so far has been a bit of a surprise with the mild winter but it is so nice for the breeders who are in full swing in the calving season. It is a very important time in the producer’s season as the new calves hit the ground and we begin making plans for the upcoming breeding season. There are producers across the province that would be happy to help you in choosing a Limousin bull that will work in your herd. The Saskatchewan Limousin Association Facebook page and the Canadian Limousin Association website both have a list of the upcoming sales and one other great source of information is this Limousin Voice magazine where the breeders showcase their herd sires on offer.

Season Greetings from the Manitoba Limousin Association. As I sit down to write this report the weather outside is beautiful for this time of year. Normally we are sitting anywhere from -15 to -30 but today it was 0 to -5. We will take a couple months of this kind of weather. This weather sure will make calving in January a treat. This past week the MLA hosted their Annual General Meeting in a little bit of a different form. Due to COVID-19 we as a board decided to host our first and hopefully only Zoom AGM meeting. We had a good turnout of breeders from across the province with all positive outlook on the future. I would like to thank Travis Hunter for the past couple of years as President of the Association. We look forward to the exciting news that will come with Travis being on the CLA Board of Directors. I would also like to thank Sherry Daniel for her many years of dedication while serving on the board.

As I sit down to write the Ontario Limousin Report we have entered into the New Year and one of the most anticipated seasons, calving season. The excitement of watching the next generation of a breeding program arrive and develop will hopefully provide a positive in what has been a challenging and different year. The idea of OLA 50 Years Forward Scholarship came about to give our juniors a creative outlet this past fall. They were asked to submit a video with topics ranging from animal husbandry skills to how the Limousin breed has influenced them. We would like to thank our panel of judges for their time in judging the entries, and the juniors themselves for the time and thought they put into these entries to showcase our breed. A sample of these videos have been posted on the Ontario Limousin Facebook page and they truly show how bright the future is with our juniors promoting our Limousin breed in the years to come. is through helping advertise breed influenced feeder calf sales, the benefits of our breed’s genetics or helping connect our members with commercial breeders. We normally have a presence at the Beef Farmers of Ontario AGM, but with the current situation we are looking to expand our ad space in the Beef Farmers of Ontario Magazine with a mailing list of over 16,000 copies per issue. With additional ad space there will be an increased space for members to advertise their contact information. If this is something that interests you please do not hesitate to reach out to any member of the OLA Board for more information. Another way we are trying to connect with new purebred and commercial breeders is to send out a copy of 2021 Member Directory Dayplanner including some welcome information to anyone that has had Limousin animal registration papers transferred to them in 2020 that is not currently an OLA Member. In closing, the Ontario Limousin Association Board would like to inform the membership that the decision has been made to postpone the AGM to a later date that has not yet been set. A couple of different options are being explored and more information will be provided in the future. All the best of luck with calving season, as we look to the future with this great breed.

Bull sale season is fast approaching and there are two sales happening in the Maritimes in the upcoming months. The first sale will be Balamore Farms 9th Annual Thickness Sells Bull Sale on March 20, 2021. Approximately fifteen Limousin bulls will sell along with six open heifers. There will also be 45 commercial heifers selling bred to Limousin bulls. The second sale will be at Nappan on April 3. There are six Limousin bulls at the Test Station with five from Othberg Limousin and one from Centerbrook Limousin. The Nappan Sale will be online only, and Balamore has yet to finalize the format that they will use.

GETTING YOUR BULLS
READY FOR BREEDING SEASON

With breeding season quickly approaching, it is time to start thinking about our bulls and getting them ready for the upcoming breeding season. When looking at profitability in our operations, it generally starts with high conception rates, and a big portion of the conception equation starts with the bulls. Getting our bulls ready, is not to just put them out with the cows. Prep work needs to be done for getting the best results and improving our conception rates.

Condition is always an important topic. Optimal condition is a body condition score of 6-7 out of 9. Many times, bulls are set aside while we focus on our females. When we look at our bulls, we want them to be athletic, and capable of doing their job. For bulls we want to see them in slightly better shape than the cows from the standpoint that they will likely lose condition when breeding. When trying to reach this condition, it is important to note that it takes time to get them into shape. Pushing them two weeks prior to turn out won’t give us lasting results. When getting bulls ready it is important to manage their condition from the time we pull them out of the cow herd to the point in which we turn them out. Both protein and energy are important. Running too low in energy will slow the rate at which semen is produced and can leave us with an increase in abnormal morphology, low quality sperm. Low protein can also reduce semen volume and quality, while reducing their libido. Mineral nutrition is the next hurdle to overcome in prepping for the breeding season. Selenium is important in semen production. Selenium helps improve semen mobility and production. Since selenium acts as an antioxidant in the body, this will help to relieve oxidative stress in the testes, leading to better semen production. It has been noted in a few studies that selenium has shown to help increase volume of semen

production. Selenium also helps in the production of testosterone, which helps to improve libido. Zinc is also of great importance when it comes to semen production. In semen production zinc will help to increase both sperm volume and concentration. It is well documented that sperm themselves contain zinc, and therefore draw on the animals’ reserves. Zinc also plays a key role in cellular energy helping the sperm to ‘swim’ to the egg for fertilization. Without adequate zinc levels sperm mobility is reduced. Copper too has shown to be essential in reproductive success. A copper deficiency in our bulls will lead to a decrease in libido and a decrease in quality. In developing bulls, low copper levels will slow the onset of puberty and lead to smaller scrotal circumference. Sourcing on the trace minerals has shown some very interesting results when is comes to making improvements. These studies looked at the introduction of organic trace minerals versus inorganic sources. Organic in this case is in terms of how the trace mineral is presented. Many organic trace minerals are bound to a short protein or amino acid, this makes them easier for the animal to absorb the trace mineral comparted to the more traditional way of being presented in a mineral form, and having to use receptors and energy in the intestinal lining to be absorbed. Most importantly, is that sperm take approximately 60 days to be produced and lots of factors can influence the production in that period. As a minimum, to improve sperm production and improve condition, 60 days should be the target to get the bulls ready for the breeding season. SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS AND OTHER SEMEN TESTING TIPS WRITTEN BY

Semen testing of yearling bulls and herd sires is just around the corner. When purchasing a bull, whether purebred or commercial, producers should always ask for a semen evaluation. Look at it thoroughly. Make sure the pass box is ticked off, then look for the specifics and whether the scrotal size is within normal parameters and is what you want. Back in 2013, the scrotal circumference minimums for age were changed just slightly – some not at all. The minimums are there for a very good reason as almost every time you semen test a bull, even one centimetre below the minimum, and it is likely he would not pass based on semen quality. The Limousin breed has a minimum of 29 cm for yearlings up to 31.5 cm at 15 months. Even though this is less than many other breeds the minimums are very true. I have found that Limousin do not need as big a testicle as some of the other breeds to produce high quality semen.

All purebred producers should have a scrotal tape and use it at culling or selection time on the young bulls. It gets you familiar with how to use it. I highly recommend the “Reliabull” scrotal tape which has been the main one used in Canada because of the spring mechanism that keeps everybody consistent. If you take the time to check yourself, then you are not surprised if one is a little short on scrotal size when your herd veterinarian semen tests, because you have also measured them. Producers and veterinarians can overall be very consistent this way. Measuring the widest part of the scrotum and pulling/compressing scrotal skin until you see the red or green part of the plunger. This means stop and read it right then. The bulls can be measured at a younger age than a year but keep in mind your cut off for scrotal size will be a lot lower. I have seen an adjusted amount of .04 cm/day as an average predicted growth rate. You are trying to eliminate the real small
ones and you may find badly misshapen or not fully descended testicles which are obvious culls. They are then removed early at a younger age before effort has been put into promoting, picturing, clipping, videoing, etc. Plus, you don’t have your veterinarian trying to semen test an inferior bull. Castration will be easier on them and less risky at a younger age as well. Go by the beef code and use the appropriate pain killers during castration. Naturally, the initial pass rate on yearling bulls that have been pre-selected and checked by the breeder will be considerably higher at veterinary semen testing time than farms that have not pre-checked their bulls with their own scrotal tape. You want to semen test only bull calves older than a year of age and preferably the closer to fifteen months the better because at less than a year of age they are just not ready. If they sell in an early sale I would measure and palpate their reproductive organs but would say too young to test and test at a later date. It is phenomenal to me how quick breeders have increased scrotal size by selection. Scrotal size is moderately heritable so that has been accomplished generally in short order. Again, Limousin do not have to be as big as the other breeds and I have always said on mature bulls anything above 39 is just bragging rights. In studies they have found bigger bulls do not, on average, produce any more semen. My other worry is if we breed big testicle genetics to big testicles genetics they can probably get too big. Bigger is not always better in the testicle world. Other veterinarians will vouch for me when we see yearlings being an abnormal amount above breed average it may be cause for concern. The semen test will be the final reckoning but I have definitely seen abnormally big bulls fail. The breed average for Limousin bulls was 31.5 but again this was back in 2013

I have heard it said in many breeds that the testicles are not big but they are longer. There are differences in shape between bulls but the scrotal circumference is easy to do reliably and puts everyone on the same page. If looking at U.S. bulls or selling into that market remember the U.S. veterinarians just pull the tape snug and so their scrotal circumferences are going to be inflated 2 cm to Canadian readings. That is a fact and worth noting to yourself and telling others. In the early days many a breeder of lots of the breeds brought in a highly touted American bull to increase scrotal size only to find out he was the same size as ones they had in their own bull pen. During semen testing on yearling bulls, besides semen quality and scrotal size, we are also looking for other odd ball things such as warts, frenulum’s, hair rings, cuts, preputial infections and seminal vesiculitis
A talk I gave on a similar topic complete with pictures has been posted on the Canadian Limousin Association website www.limousin.com and it may give even more clarity to what was mentioned here. Here’s hoping for a very successful calving season and a great bull test to get 2021 off to a good start. Keep in mind biosecurity, not dissimilar to what we are all experiencing with COVID-19, is something we definitely want to pay attention to, especially during calving season on our farms and ranches. The online sales have been very successful to date but I know the cattle industry definitely misses the networking and socializing that comes with live sales. It is amazing how we have adapted.

and my guess it is higher than that today. This was taking all bulls and adjusting to 365 days of age.
being the main ones. Fortunately, if found, many of these things can be corrected right at the time of the semen test. If you happen to see a yearling bull with a big wart on his penis have that attended to ahead of time. The semen test will then be the recheck as all the conditions mentioned above will almost always be rechecked by the veterinarian to make sure healing has fully occurred and no other issues have developed. If you can’t get semen on an apparently normal bull, use a bigger probe with more contact or the veterinarian massaging. In extreme cases I have had a refractory bull to the ejaculator breed a cull cow and pull the semen and vaginal mucous out and evaluate that. In this case you can even watch his ability to breed at the same time. As breeders, always best to ask a commercial breeder to try and watch at least one mating to make sure young bulls have the desire and physical ability to breed. This is what we can’t check and sometimes they need more time and patience and other times they never do and need to be culled.

As we now settle into a new year brimmed with optimism and opportunities, our industry must continue to demonstrate resiliency and continue our efforts to overcome the challenges that faced us last year and now into 2021. We could not have fathomed a year ago how the pandemic, a human health issue, could have such potential long-term impacts for Canadian beef producers. While we don’t know what exactly this year will bring, we need to remain vigilant and realistic about the pandemic’s legacy on our industry. This is not the time to become complacent. We must keep moving our industry forward to remain competitive on the world stage through strengthening our trade agreements, providing solutions to government to enhance the responsiveness of business risk management programs, and continuing conversations with consumers about where their food comes from and the connection between cattle and the environment, just to name a few.

I believe the Canadian beef industry is poised and well-positioned to help rebuild the Canadian economy and secure future growth. That’s why CCA’s response to COVID-19 continues to focus on maintaining business continuity. We remain committed to ensuring our industry can function as best as possible during these uncertain times, whether that be ensuring a smooth sales and calving season by developing protocols for cattle sales and business activities, keeping our borders open for trade, ensuring inspection services remained available and working with processing plants to maintain or to quickly recover capacity.

a lot of useful information available and it is often challenging to sort through. Having a good discussion with the breeder will help narrow your search. Selecting the right bull will have a significant influence on the price we receive for our calves and ultimately the experience a consumer will have at their dinner table. I remind and encourage you to be diligent and monitor changing regulations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We all recognize how critical bull sale season is to our industry and we need them to continue whether in person or online. Last year, we adjusted how sales were conducted at the onset of the pandemic and it was a great example of the resiliency of cattle producers across Canada. Most of us have family operations with limited help and we can’t afford to be sick, especially in these winter months when our cattle need to be fed, cows calved and calves doctored. The CCA has developed a set of guidelines for attending and hosting auction sales in 2021, which is a best practice reference document to help keep everyone healthy. There is also useful information available on provincial health authority websites to help businesses navigate and implement protocols to keep their employees safe and remain open as we work to put food on the plates of Canadians.
Looking optimistically at the big picture, trade will continue to be an important component of our ability to overcome the economic impacts from COVID-19. While CCA is pleased with the overall improved market access that has been attained in recent years, it is more important than ever we continue to grow our exports by accessing new markets and through the removal of technical trade barriers.
When I speak of being hopeful about the future, we also have a positive story to tell about the connection between cattle and the environment. Through the 2030 beef goals, our industry is demonstrating our commitment to continually improving our stewardship practices. A great example of this is McDonald’s Canada showing their commitment to Canadian beef producers and sustainability by highlighting sustainable beef sourcing in their Quarter Pounder® line of burgers. McDonald’s is now sourcing at least 30 per cent of the beef for the Quarter Pounder line-up from CRSB Certified Sustainable farms and ranches. I’m sure many of you have now seen a number of commercials, which helps share our sustainability story with consumers across Canada.
As a cattle producer, there is no better time than now to evaluate our farm operations. The run of fall calf sales is fresh in our minds and we know how our calves performed. Many of us are now into calving so we can see what is ahead based on the bulls we used last year. With bull sale season starting, we can use this information to select bulls that will work in our environment and get the results that we are looking for. There is

CONTRIBUTORS JASON HURST Jason Hurst grew up on a cow/calf operation in Ontario, then attended the University of Guelph. After graduating Guelph he started in the feed business and has been advising beef customers since 2009. He works with feedlots, commercial cow calf producers and purebred operations. Together with his wife and family they also manage a cow calf operation in Ontario.
ROY LEWIS, DVM Dr. Roy Lewis has been a large animal veterinary practitioner for over 30 years with a cattle practice in Westlock, Alberta. His interests were herd health and bovine reproduction. Since Spring 2020 he has been doing consulting work in the veterinary field.
