This year is certainly a prime example that time waits for no one or nothing! I cannot believe that as I am writing this that there is the odd orange leaf now and fall is right there within reach. We have had a very good summer in most aspects and calves that I have seen are meeting and surpassing expectations, mostly due to the feed that we have seen across the country, for which we are very thankful for on the heels of the previous year.

We now head into the Fall where we see the workload for everyone start to ramp up once again. Preparation for fall sales and shows are in full swing and I would like to remind everyone that along with your increase in workload, so do we have at the office for registrations and DNA. Some of your requests simply cannot be hurried and is demanding of our staff. We are running on a staff that fits the Association in terms of budget and workload, while trying to keep up with the requests from you the breeders. It is a juggling act to say the least but we can make it happen with consideration from all with your scheduling of activities. Please know that DNA is three weeks (3) turn around, and results will be forwarded as soon as available! I ask that you be respectful of our staff and their time and if you require assistance, please send an email outlining your request and they will get to you in a timely fashion and take

care of your requirements and save on some of their valued time. Remember, we have two office staff to serve the needs of over 400 members and they are very good at their jobs, and they must iron out a plethora of issues along the way – all of which takes time. I thank you for this and trust that we can keep the good flow that we are experiencing and trust that the recent wrinkles we experienced are long gone.

I want you to know that your Board and your office has been vigilant since the AGM in working to finish up the Legacy Project, and as I hope we all can appreciate, that an undertaking of that magnitude left some situations that required more time and efforts to make it complete – we are winning and THANK YOU to everyone for your participation in this project – a huge success for the breed.

Hand and hand with that, is where do we go now and how do we continue with this Legacy that we have started. We have a few suggestions that we are working on and welcome suggestions from breeders as to how or what is next. Contact a director and visit with your ideas as we are only here to implement within the guidelines and bylaws of our breed what we can to help maintain or enhance our position in the industry.

The Fall also brings about the return to the show barns, and judging from the success of last year everyone is more than ready to do this again. At the time of writing this all the major shows across Canada are to be running in full force and we take this time to wish all participants great success. As you promote your herd you are also promoting the breed and as a non-hands-on breeder, I thank you for what you do to fly the Limousin colours. It is encouraging to me to see all the print media showing how the influence of Limousin can and will enhance the bottom line of many sectors of the industry. Thank you and continued success to all as we boost the desire to use Limousin.

With the show season comes a great selection of Fall sales to take in. I have noticed the selections for a lot of the sales, and I can fully assure you that there are cattle for all herds here no matter how discriminating you may be. Breeders are bringing some exciting genetics for appraisal, and I truly wish them the very best as we move forward.

It is my intention to attend as many of these events as possible throughout the fall, and I do look forward to meeting and visiting with all breeders and offer my support to you. I like this quote; it applies to many areas of our daily lives and transfers into the cattle business. The potential to succeed in the Limousin breed is there, it takes both consistent effort and planning to realize it. The association offers numerous opportunities for success through advertising, educational material and industry involvement. There are also opportunities to become involved in breed leadership on both provincial and national boards and committees.

The Canadian Limousin Association held its 53rd Annual General Meeting on Thursday, July 14, 2022 hosted by Highland Stock Farms Ltd. in Bragg Creek, Alta. The board of directors is pleased to welcome to the board Michael Machan of OPAL Stock Farms Renfrew, Ont. The new executive was elected following the meeting and we would like to congratulate Wayne Burgess who was re-elected for a second term as President. Also re-elected to the executive are Ashton Hewson, Vice-President and Travis Hunter, Treasurer. Amanda Matthews will continue to sit in the role as Past President.

The board of directors meets regularly on the last Tuesday of each month and welcomes agenda items to be brought forward from the membership. The board would like to invite members to become involved in the association through the 2022/2023 Committees. Please reach out to a board member or myself for involvement on a committee. Committees of the Board - Breed Improvement Committee, Commercial Committee, Promotions Committee, Registry Committee, National Show & Sale Committee.

I spend a fair amount of my time on the phone with breeders visiting about their operations. A common theme in those conversations is the past success of the breed and the current economic and environmental challenges raising cattle. We can all agree that inflation and the lack of rain or abundance of rain in other parts have made for challenging times. However, there is still success and abundance to be had in the breed and we have witnessed this with individual breeders right across Canada. A key piece in this success is putting yourself out there and getting involved in what the breed has to offer. I encourage all members to use the resources available through the association and to take an active role in the breed.

Je passe une bonne partie de mon temps au téléphone avec les producteurs discutant leurs opérations. Un thème commun durant ces conversations est l'ancien succès de la race et les défis économiques et environnementaux présentement. On peut tous s’entendre que l’inflation et le manque de pluie ou abondance dans d’autres régions ont créé plusieurs défis. Par contre, il a encore du succès à atteindre dans la race, on l’a remarqué par le succès de plusieurs éleveurs à travers le Canada. Un facteur clé à ce succès est de sortir et de participer dans les opportunités que la race peut offrir. J’encourage tous les membres d’utiliser les ressources de l’Association disponibles et de participer activement dans la race.

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION

With summer coming to a close the CJLA Board hopes everyone had eventful and Limousin filled days. Since our last report the board has offered multiple giveaways including the coffee/tea basket giveaways for supporting with cookbooks won by Richmond Ranch, Plains Limousin, Carpenter Cattle Company, and Arcon Cattle Company, a cookbook giveaway won by the Ecklund kids, Mother’s Day gift basket won by Michelle Kennedy, a Yeti cup giveaway for submitting cookbook recipes won by the Ecklund kids, and a Father’s Day gift basket won by Andrew Webb. The board would like to thank everyone who participated and hopes that all the winners enjoyed their prizes.

A huge event that happened this summer was the CJLA Impact Show which was held in conjunction with Summer Synergy. There was a total of 24 participants in the Impact Show and the breed was very well represented in the show ring. During the show all of the juniors had activities together and some of the Limousin families got together at the campground for some fun team judging tips. Overall all the juniors enjoyed the show and are already making plans for next year's Impact Show in Spencerville, Ontario August 2-5, 2023.

As most of you may know the CJLA Board welcomed new faces as well as said goodbye to some familiar ones. Cheyenne Porter, Madi Lewis, and Joe Scott: we wish you all the best of luck as you pursue new adventures. New to the board this year is Megan Conners. We are excited to have her and see what new ideas she will bring to the board. Our new board is currently planning future events for the upcoming year and would like to wish everyone a great fall show season, as well as remind everyone that cookbooks are still available and to contact one of the board members to put in an order.

1. KIRA AXLEY (PRESIDENT)

Years on CJLA board: 3 • Hometown: Czar, AB Age: 20 • School: Graduated from Lakeland College April 2022 with a diploma in Animal Sciences, livestock major

I grew up raising Limos with my family and showed our purebred females and Limousin influenced steers throughout my 12 years of 4-H. Our family has always raised Limousin, with both purebred and commercial herds, and I grew fond of the breed for their ability to be a natural beef producer and to do so in an efficient manner. As I grew up and got more involved in the farm, I began to develop my own herd of females and began registering them under my own name in 2016. Throughout high school and college I was active in the junior show circuit with my own purebred females. I joined the CJLA board in 2020 to expand my connections in the breed and have done just that!

Favourite Vacation: Bus camping trip to Yellowknife, NWT in 2019 that I won through the 4-H Selections program. We travelled in a

highway bus from Wetaskawin, Alta. north to Yellowknife, NWT in a 2-week period while tenting every night and making many stops to tour the northern towns and historic landmarks throughout the day!

2. EMMA QUALLY (VICE PRESIDENT)

Years on CJLA board: 2 • Hometown: Rose Valley, SK • Age: 16 • School: Grade 11 at Rose Valley School

I am the fourth generation of my family farm, Qually-T Limousin. We have been raising purebred Limousin cattle since 1989. I have been in 4-H for 10 years and have been exhibiting Limousin animals in that time. I am looking forward to competing in other shows in the future. I have always been very passionate about the Limousin breed and agriculture.

Favourite Vacation: My grade 10 Banff trip touring Alberta. We travelled to Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, and Edmonton. I am already looking forward to my grade 11 canoe trip!

3. BIANCA BYERS (SECRETARY)

Years on CJLA board: 3 • Hometown: Blackstock, ON • Age: 20 • School: Lakeland College Bachelors Degree Agriculture Technology

I started showing cattle in 2016 with my neighbour’s who graciously taught me the ropes and provided me with animals to work on and show supplies to use. Since then, my parents have grown their herd, and I have started my own herd as well.

Favourite Vacation: Florence, Italy in May 2022.

4. TAYLOR ANNETT (TREASURER)

Hometown: Mildmay, ON • Years on CJLA board: 2 • Age: 17 • School: Grade 12 at Walkerton District Community School

For as long as I can remember I have always had a very keen interest in agriculture and the cattle industry. I am proud to be a third-generation beef farmer. Along with my parents and my sister, we own and operate our cow calf operation, Preferred Limousin. I’ve been showing cattle and actively involved in 4-H for a number of years now. I am also the Vice-President of the Ontario Junior Limousin Association. I am very intrigued by the genetic side of things and I have hopes to go to university and pursue a career in Bovine Embryology. Being on the board has given me many great opportunities to meet young people who share the same passions as I do. I can not wait for many more experiences to come!

Favourite Vacation: Each year my family takes a trip to the Royal Winter Fair. It has been a tradition in our house for as long as I can remember. It’s always nice to go and see all the familiar faces and visit with people that we don’t get to see very often.

My parents grew up with Limousin and wanted a herd of their own so ever since I was little Limousin has been the main breed of cattle I show throughout the year.

Favourite Vacation: Going to Disneyland when I was 5 and getting to see Pluto and go on rides.

6. JOCELYN KENNEDY (DIRECTOR)

Hometown: Omemee, ON • Years on CJLA board: 3 • Age: 17 • School: Grade 12 at I.E. Weldon Secondary School

My Grandfather had a mixed breed herd of commercial cattle back in the 1970s and then found Limousin. He loved Limousin bulls and what they were adding to the calves his cows were producing. My parents and my sister were brought into the purebred business and in 2015 the first purebred calf with the CHA (Crown Hill Acres) prefix was born! My family and I fell in love with purebred Limousin and the people we met in the process of showing and purchasing cattle. We’ve been showing Limos since that first calf hit the ground and haven’t looked back!

Favourite Vacation: For sure Alberta 2022 – my family and I travelled through the mountains and got to see the province, and then attended the 2022 CJLA Impact Show in Olds and had the best time!

7. MEGAN CONNERS (DIRECTOR)

Hometown: Hanna, AB • Years on CJLA board: 1 Age: 17 • School: Grade 12 at Youngstown School

Cattle have always been a huge part of my life, and as I have grown up, my interest has broadened to the genetic and management side of our operation as well. My family has always raised Limousin influence animals, and I have enjoyed becoming more active in helping choose replacement females and herd sires for our program. I enjoy being able to showcase steers and females from our herd through 4-H, which I have been part of for 8 years. I am excited to be a new member of the CJLA board as a way to become more involved in the Limousin breed.

Favourite Vacation: My favourite vacation is my family’s annual camping trip to the mountains. We spend the week exploring the back country on quads and fishing along the way. I always look forward to going back each year!

A JUNIOR'S POINT OF VIEW CEDAR HAYNE

Limousin wins the heart of Gull Lake, Saskatchewan youth.

Born in Bassano, Alta., Cedar Hayne spent most of her early years in Alberta riding – both in the arena and out in the field with friends. 2014 brought about the move to Gull Lake, Sask. where she currently attends the Gull Lake School in grade 10. Upon graduating high school, Cedar aspires to attend university in the United States of America to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine and has her eyes set on becoming a large animal veterinarian.

“Since pretty much forever animals have been a huge part of my life,” Cedar goes on to say, “and ever since I was little all I have ever wanted to do is take care of them. So naturally becoming a vet has always been in the books for me.”

In 2015, Cedar got her first introduction to the Limousin breed, taking a Limousin influence steer in 4-H.

“Ever since then, Limousin has been my first choice for market steers and show females,” Cedar says, “Limousin has the best muscling, best tasting meat, and best overall docility. The Limousin animals I have shown have been nothing but successful for me and there is nothing that could change my mind that Limousin isn’t the best breed.”

The family’s Lazy H Limousin breeding herd came to be in 2016. Initially, a couple of Limousin influence heifers and a black Limousin bull formed the start of the herd that Cedar’s parents, Andrew and Candice Webb, would soon grow. In the years following, the whole family has been busy building and improving their herd’s genetics and growing the herd size. Currently, the family runs in the neighbourhood of 60 head of purebred and commercial females with bulls being marketed by private treaty.

Cedar has developed an eye for quality cattle and an aptitude for the preparation and presentation that goes into marketing seedstock.

“Limousin females have always had the depth of body and overall structure I look for in breeding stock. They have calving ease, high fertility rates and good

milking ability. All of these characteristics are extremely important and are what make Limousin females superior,” Cedar states.

On the bull side of the equation, it is the overall muscling, phenotype and structure that she feels is unmatched. There is no question in Cedar’s mind which breed has her heart.

“The beautiful traditional apricot hair coat has made them stand out in the crowd and makes them my top choice, always. It is my hope that more people realize how docile and well-built Limousin cattle are and the population of Limousin herds grow,” Cedar goes on to say, “This goal can be met by people continuing to advertise their herds as well as register their animals, so that the public can see just how many Limousin breeders and Limousin animals there are.”

Cedar attended her first CJLA Impact Show in Saskatoon in 2019.

It was at this show that she met one of her best friends and since then it has been a passion of Cedar’s to give other juniors the same experiences she has had. As a result, Cedar joined the Canadian Junior Limousin Association Board of Directors last year and is currently the Press Reporter.

“I have attended many events as a CJLA representative and am proud every moment. The board is like a family and the things we plan are worth being proud of. I hope to help make this year even better than the last.”

Cedar says she has honed many life skills while on the CJLA board and through attending the CJLA Impact Show. Skills like public speaking, time management, organization, and learning to work with others are all things that she says will benefit her in the future both in work and everyday life. She also hopes to one day join the Canadian Limousin

“Some of my favourite memories are memories made at the Impact Shows – as most of the juniors know those shows are nothing but fun. I have way too many memories to count!”

Cedar has certainly had her share of proud accomplishments with her cattle. She says that the pinnacle of her show career, so far, was this year at the CJLA Impact Show at Summer Synergy. She took her bred and owned cow/calf pair to the

show and her fifty-percent Limousin heifer calf won the commercial Limousin female division, qualifying for the Supreme as the only calf.

“This has been my proudest accomplishment for multiple reasons. First, the judge was Ryan Rash and he has always been a superstar of cattle to me. Secondly, this heifer calf was my very first animal of my own, and third it was my first time being at Summer Synergy, so to get in the Supreme my first year was a huge deal.”

There are many people Cedar credits with helping her along the way.

“Ever since I was little my parents have pretty much shown me everything I know when it comes to the everyday challenges of owning and caring for cattle. Without them leading me and helping me I wouldn’t know half the things I know now and I definitely wouldn't be as successful as I have been.”

Ashton and Kendra Hewson of Double B Cattle Co. and Lexi Girodat of Rocking G Land and Cattle have mentored Cedar and brought her along to help at multiple shows which has allowed her to hone her skills as a showman and solidified her work ethic. Cedar’s advice for other youth in the cattle industry is to get eager and get disciplined.

“Being eager and dedicated to the industry helps get you opportunities of a lifetime, and even if it seems like a boring task, every little thing counts and is seen. As for being disciplined it is very important to keep yourself in line and make sure you are getting your work done. Those characteristics are noticed and will do nothing but help you and benefit you in the future.”

Cedar’s future is incredibly bright as she looks to stay involved in the cattle industry for the long haul. Whether it be on the end of a show halter, growing her own herd of Limousin, or moving the breed forward at the board table – we are proud to have Cedar as part of the Limousin family.

What is your favorite time of year? Breeding season is the one season that we look forward to the most! The challenge to improve your herd through decisions in genetic crosses is one we enjoy! Knowing these decisions will impact your herd and your successes for years to come makes the challenge all that much greater.

What do you value most as a cattle breeder? The one thing that makes this business what it is for us is the people. From our Limousin family, to the breeders across the isle, to our loyal supporters, this is truly what makes this business what it is. We have met so many amazing people, some from across the world and some from just a stone's throw away, each one of them holds a special place with us. This isn't just a job, it's a lifestyle and it's one we are proud to live!

Tell us about your favourite Limousin memory. 2019 CWA will always stand out for us! This show was so impactful in so many ways but the pride we felt in our first Grand Champion banner with DBCC Fool's Gold who we raised with such conviction was both incredibly rewarding but also so very humbling. To be standing among so many decorated and accomplished breeders was surreal.

Which animal has had the most influence in your program and why? When we purchased Miss Hew 10W in 2017 we hit the dusty trail and never looked back! She has proven herself year after year, raising some of the top calves since her first calf hit the ground as a two year old. Her daughters Miss Hew 4Y,

Miss Hew Connie and DBCC Foxy Lady have played a pivotal role within our herd, driving the maternal genetics forward. These females have gone on to produce some of our favourites such as, DBCC Fool's Gold, DBCC Hard Pressed and DBCC Harlequin.

What have been a few of your proudest accomplishments? Starting Double B Cattle Co in 2014 was an exciting new adventure! And what an adventure it has been, starting with just 4 commercial cows and a passion for the breed! We have worked hard to build our brand within the breed showing our vision for longevity and quality maternal bloodlines.

CANADIAN LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION BOARDNEWS

Michael Machan was appointed to the Canadian Limousin Association Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting on July 14, 2022 in Bragg Creek, Alta.

Michael joins the board with a long history in the Limousin business. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, as a teenager, Michael was deeply involved in the promotion and marketing of the Limousin breed with participation in cattle shows and cattle sales in Ontario and Quebec. In 1984, at nineteen years of age, Michael travelled to the United States and visited herds from Texas to South Dakota and during that journey he visited Dallas, Texas for the North American Junior Limousin Association show. Michael returned to Canada to begin to put the foundational steps in place to form the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and the Ontario Junior Limousin Association.

Michael’s professional career took him through twenty years in banking as a lending officer and branch manager and a head office manager focused on learning

and people development. In 2003, at thirty-eight years of age, Michael switched gears in his professional life to become a Registered Psychotherapist. Today, Michael owns and operates Michael Machan Psychotherapy, focused on work with couples, families and individuals in depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions and relationship issues. Michael is the Vice President of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Not unlike many others in the Limousin breed, Michael has a profound love of the breed that started over forty years ago. Michael cares about rigorous and ethical promotion and marketing of the breed. Michael is keen on supporting breed improvement and growth with associations that meet the needs of the membership –breeders. The director role on the Canadian Limousin Association will allow Michael to leverage his financial management, business development and human development skills and knowledge for the benefit of the Limousin breed.

It was so great to be together again and to welcome some new juniors as well, to the Maritime Junior Limousin Show – 2022. There were 17 participants who joined in the activities at Balamore Farm in Great Village, Nova Scotia, on August 5th and 6th, with 20 cattle from four exhibitors. Juniors participated in judging, oral marketing, ice breakers, photography, showmanship and conformation.

We welcomed Mike Geddes as the official judge for the weekend, and all the juniors were impressed by his friendly approach and were keen to learn from him. Ashley Higgins led the ice breakers and Emily Ross was the judge for the judging competition. The official photographer for the weekend was Samantha Brown, who, with the help of Robert Cooper, judged the photography competition as well.

It was a relaxed and fun atmosphere, and everyone was excited to see the results of their hard work and preparation. On Friday night, after the cattle were settled and the activities for the day were finished, we all enjoyed a beautiful roast beef dinner and social time.

Saturday morning we held the showmanship and conformation classes, finishing up late morning to beat the heat. After a barbecue lunch provided by parent volunteers, we held the awards ceremony, with the president of the Maritime Limousin Association, John Calvin Siddall presenting.

Thanks to the Siddall family for looking after the prizes, to all the parents and other volunteers who shared their time and talents, and a special thank you to Sidney Patton who was the lead on organizing the show.

THE PERSONAL VISIT

Our world continues to spin, seemingly faster each season. As we emerge from a time of relative seclusion and a marked deviation from how we normally carry out business, we are finally getting back to relatively normal in-person events. While the past couple of years has stretched many to broaden their digital marketing and communication skill sets, I truly believe that these mediums will never be an equal replacement of the all-important personal visit.

It is in these face-to-face opportunities that true friendships are formed, solid business deals come to fruition, and a lasting impression – be it of an animal, a person, or an entire operation – are formed. Most of us know this to be true, and yet it can be a hurdle to accomplish. The demands of most operations leave little time for anything short of absolute necessity when it comes to ‘extras’ to add to the calendar or credit card. What if we were all a little more intentional about this aspect

of our businesses. I would venture to guess some of the best operations across breeds and industries are. What if we made a plan each year and set aside an allotment of time and budget for these in-person visits. Depending on the goals you have for your operation how you go about this may be different from the next person.

Commercial customers will always be the fuel that makes the wheels of any breed turn, and taking a keen interest in their operations can help inform decisions in your own. Touring commercial customer’s operations, being at the market when their calves sell, socializing over supper – form those relationships. They fuel our breed. Your efforts will be a worthwhile investment.

Making a point of going to tour other seedstock producer’s places can be an enlightening experience. Seeing the full picture, the entire cow herd, the whole program – is the best

way to make informed decisions, discover hidden gems, and learn about what works and what doesn’t for other operations and add that knowledge to your own toolbox. Beyond that, lasting friendships start in the field, around kitchen tables, and over meals. Take the time, go for the tour. Everything is better seen and discussed in person.

As a breed, we are all stronger together, and positivity, generosity and energy breeds more of the same. Be it breed events, junior activities or shows – these are the times to make a point of being there amongst the buzz of the Limousin breed. Take full advantage of these times to have those all-important personal visits. It will fill your cup, and I don’t just mean the kind with a Ceasar in it.

Many a son or daughter with cattle raising parents has spent their only holiday of the summer travelling to some remote destination to tour cattle. This is where real business was conducted and more importantly long-term friendships were formed. Just like no good story starts with “One time while eating a salad,” the most legendary of bovine business deals didn’t start with, “This one time I talked to a guy over Facebook.”

There are plenty of good, high-quality cattle out there. It’s the people who stand behind them and the relationships forged that make for satisfied, repeat customers. This is no secret, and for most of us we know all of this to be important, but sometimes life gets in the way. The rush and the crunch of it all keeps us spinning in our own worlds of work. We always say we’ll make that phone call and plan that visit when things slow down, but they never do. So let this be your gentle nudge, you won’t regret making the time and the effort. Think of it as an investment in the long-game. Plus, you’ll probably see some pretty neat country and make deeper connections with good folks along the way. At the end of the day, no day looking at or talking cattle is ever wasted.

FOUNDATION REPORT

NALF is looking forward to the fall of 2022 and the bull sale season of 2023 as we head towards winter. Like much of the United States this year, I know producers in Canada have had to contend with higher production cost for feed, fuel, fertilizer, etc. along with regional drought conditions throughout a good portion of cattle producing country. All of production agriculture continues to face challenges given the current operating environment and political foes that may not realize where their food comes from.

Given this fact, it is critical that we promote the positive traits of the Limousin breed to help producers remain in business with efficient cattle that possess superior genetics for least cost production practices. This will require that we continue to capture more data that helps us produce the right kind of cattle to remain competitive in the beef industry moving forward. Limousin cattle have feed efficiency advantages and superior dry matter conversion rates which are of paramount importance given today’s high feed cost. This combined with superior carcass traits and the advantages of superior maternal traits that lead to the production of an easy keeping cow in hard range conditions will be of value to most commercial cattlemen.

Documenting some of these advantages through independent third-party research is why the NALF board recently formed the NALRF (North American Limousin Research Foundation).

As some of you may be aware, NALF has partnered with two commercial Angus cowherds in Northern Montana to generate enough test progeny to conduct 3rd party research at South Dakota State University next fall.

Phase one of the NALRF research project is now complete with 453 head of commercial Angus cows which were bred on two separate ranches in Montana in early June via the 7&7 synchronization process. The commercial cows were artificially inseminated to 3 different contemporary groups of 9 sires consisting of Purebred Limousin, Lim-Flex®, and Angus bulls of similar EPD equivalency.

Progeny of the matings will be shipped to SDSU in the fall of 2023 for the independent 3rd party research. The NALF board hopes to document the effects of heterosis and its impact on feed efficiency for feed conversion rates monitoring dry matter intakes and A.D.G. on an individual basis. Additionally, individual carcass data will be captured that can be traced back to the 9 sires within the 3 different contemporary groups of bulls.

Harvest dates will be scheduled to three different shipping dates of increasing outweights to also measure the effects of maintaining feed efficiency and its impact on carcass trait profitability in today’s era of larger outweights on fed cattle. NALF will keep you posted as the research progresses.

The NALF board strongly feels that the time is past due for the need of research that can demonstrate the advantages of using Limousin genetics in a crossbreeding program on English based cows in today’s commercial marketplace. Positive complementarity effects achieved for performance production traits, maternal effects and advantages in carcass merit need to be documented in order to proactively promote the advantages of using our genetics to the commercial cattle industry. We will keep you posted moving forward.

Along those lines, the NALF board is also working towards new EPD development and resulting index’s that are more current and critical to production cost in todays operating environment. At the August board meeting, with the help of Dr. Robert Weaber, NALF is in the process of getting ready to publish both an A.D.G. and dry matter intake EPDs soon. These two EPDs will be combined with other production and carcass traits that will be utilized in the development of a more current terminal index that is more reflective of today’s larger outweights on fed cattle and larger premiums on quality grades in addition to yield grade differences.

The NALF board is also moving forward with the development of a maternal index. Both the updated terminal, and maternal index will be utilizing the IGENDEC software that is provided by the Beef Improvement

Federation. NALF is intent on utilizing all the captured phenotypes that members have submitted for feed intake systems to date to enhance the accuracy of the new EPDs and Index’s moving forward.

All this has come on the heels of the large influx of carcass data phenotypes that have been added into the NALF herdbook over the last 3 years to dramatically enhance carcass trait EPD accuracies. Presently, NALF has added over 120,000 of actual carcass data phenotypes into its herdbook which is by far the largest capture of carcass phenotypes of any current breed association to date.

NALF will continue to promote the use of data and upgraded technology in the future and representative of what has been a driving factor the past 50 years for both NALF and CLA. Both association’s dedication towards maintaining a quality, data driven herdbook that focuses on both data capture and new technologies moving forward the next 50 years will remain of high priority to provide service to our breeders in today’s competitive seedstock business.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Greetings from beautiful BC! We certainly hope that this report finds everyone happy and healthy and headed into a very prosperous harvest and calf weaning! BC had a successful bull sale season, selling bulls all over Western Canada, including many new customers which was very positive for the breed in BC. The late spring brought some seeding challenges, but the heat came in late June and the hay crops were abundant.

There were only a few Limousin events this summer, but the breed was very well represented. There were Limousin cattle displayed at the Dawson Creek Fall Fair, North Peace Fall Fair, and Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong, BC. The numbers weren’t huge, but the

quality was very strong and Limousin came out with several banners throughout the shows. One banner of note was the Reserve Champion Stars of the Future Heifer calf awarded out of 13 calves, to Pinnacle View Limousin, at this IPE all breeds futurity show. Limousin was also very well represented on the 4-H front as well. The Quesnel District had 13 Limousin and Limousin influenced projects and a purebred steer, owned by Austyn Kishkan, was named Grand Champion! A few other Limousin influenced projects were banner winners in the province, making our breed a solid choice for the competitive 4-H members!

Greetings from the Alberta Limousin Association!

The restart of the ALA year began at the Greenwood Community Hall with our 2022 annual meeting. Many thanks to the Saskatchewan Limousin Association and the Scott and Rocky Payne families for allowing us to join their annual meeting as well. The Greenwood and Payne Livestock’s hospitality was only matched by the exceptional quality of their programs and the fellowship of Limousin breeders who long awaited our provincial association’s first post-pandemic event.

On the business side, we say thank you and are indebted to two past ALA presidents, Cameron Olson and Tyler Stewart, who have completed their commitment to the ALA board. We welcome Allan Mattie and MacArthur Kowalchuk to the Board. We look forward to their fresh ideas and counsel as we work toward promoting the Limousin message.

From there we would like to recognize the efforts of Amy Miller and Anne Burgess for taking the lead on the recent CJLA Impact Show. Our congratulations to all participants and appreciation to all who supported the show in any way.

Our gratitude as well needs to be extended to Rob, Marci, Amanda and sons of Highland Stock Farms for hosting the CLA Annual Meeting at their impressive Bragg Creek, Alta. ranch. The generous hospitality of one of our founding Limousin breeders is always appreciated.

The annual ALA Calendar Auction went off successfully again. With its online format we raised $11,525. Production costs are estimated to be $9,000. Being our primary fundraiser for the ALA, and as we draw down our surpluses the Board will have to evaluate the vigor of this project and determine how to freshen up the product or take a completely different tact.

The ALA has made a 3-year commitment to a completely new project –the Alberta Limousin Junior Futurity. Beginning January 1 and ending on December 31 of each year, Juniors are encouraged to nominate their Limousin influenced steer or heifer. During the year these animals will accumulate points from various Junior shows in BC, Alberta and Lloydminster. Juniors will be responsible for submitting committee verified placings from these shows to the ALA secretary. Points totals will be tabulated to determine our champion and runner up. These two will be awarded $2,000 and $1,000 respectfully. Please watch for details and nomination forms on the ALA Facebook page and the ALA website.

The 2022 Farmfair Limousin Bonanza show is set for Thursday, November 10, 2022. Our show judges this year will be Andie and Brayden Schmidt of Westway Farms, a Simmental and Sim-Angus operation at Didsbury, Alta.

The ALA Board is looking for offers to host the 2023 Annual Field Day and meeting, traditionally held on the Saturday of the Father’s Day weekend (June 17, 2023). Our membership is looking to gather, visit and learn of another’s program. Please contact anyone on the ALA Board with your ideas on how we can make this a memorable day for us all.

The late summer heat has brought harvest in at a quicker pace than some of us would like but as the days get shorter all producers are making fall plans for their upcoming winter.

This summer the SLA celebrated their 50th Anniversary on June 25th with tours of the Greenwood and Payne Livestock operations near Lloydminster, Sask. Lunch was provided at Payne Livestock with Harvey Payne and his crew supplying all the fixings. Later that afternoon everyone met at the Greenwood Hall for games and socializing and the SLA held their Annual Meeting. Vice President Ashton Hewson chaired the meeting and elections for board members and directors were held. Wyatt Dyck, Andrew Webb and Carey Hirschfeld joined the board as new directors. Ashton Hewson was elected President, Terry Hepper as Vice President, Janet Hale as Treasurer, and Jean Hewson as Secretary, Saskatchewan Stock Growers representative is Jeff Yorga,

Hello fellow breeders. I hope everyone had a good spring and that everyone received enough rain to get the pastures and hay started. As we move into fall, harvest has just started here in Manitoba. The hay crops seemed to be good this year with hearing averages being 2.5 – 4.5 bales an acre. A lot better than last year.

These past few months have been pretty quiet for the board as everyone has been busy farming so not much happened in terms of activities or gatherings.

This summer the Manitoba Limousin Association lost a breeder and dear friend to everyone in the breed. Wayne McPherson passed away in spring time and as a board we would like to again send our condolences to the McPherson family of Cherway Limousin. Wayne will be truly missed by everyone in the Limousin breed.

Ag Ex in Brandon will be happening again this year. October 24-29 are the dates of the event. Entries are due at the end of September. The Limousin group is planning on having a show as long as numbers warrant. If any

The Ontario Limousin Association and its members have been having a great summer so far and are looking forward to an exciting fall filled with shows and the 2nd Annual Eastern Showcase Sale. From the Impact Show in Alberta this past July, the AGM and Junior Show at Carson’s and the Central Ontario Limousin Showcase Show in August at Barrie Fair, it has been clear that interest in our breed is strong and the breeders are excited to be out marketing and visiting once again.

The OJLA was represented on the national stage at the Impact Show this July that was hosted in conjunction with Summer Synergy in Olds, Alberta. The young ladies that made the trip made us all proud and were competitive in numerous events both in the showring and out. It was great to see them experience an event like Synergy and Ontario is looking forward to hosting the 2023 National Impact Show in Spencerville, Ontario next August.

The Annual Meeting for the OLA took on a different look this year than in the past, normally it is a winter meeting and this year the OLA opted to try something new. We used the facilities at David Carson’s Farms and Auctions Service to host our AGM as well as a Junior Show in the morning. The show had 20 competitors and was judged by a past OJLA Member, Samantha Kennedy. At the conclusion of the show there was an excellent catered lunch put on by the Listowel Fair Board and

spirited bidding at the Silent Auction where the proceeds went to fund 4-H Breed Awards. The AGM portion of the day was filled with good conversation around the activities of the OLA Board, welcoming 3 new directors Ben Belanger, Madi Lewis and Nolan McLarty, as well as Matt Zwambag continuing for another term. In addition, Laura Ecklund was able to join us via Zoom to provide a CLA update. We concluded the meeting with guest speakers from the Beef Farmers of Ontario on the topic of Transportation Regulations and Manifests, as well as some information on Farm Insurance provided by Allen Insurance.

As the fall grows closer that means show season is in full swing, Barrie Fair played host to the first CLA Point show of the year and it was great to see a group of breeders getting back into the ring. We are hoping numbers permitting that this will be the first of numerous point shows to take place this year in the province with the last point show set to take place this November at the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Winter Fair when it hosts the 2022 Canadian National Limousin Show on Saturday, November 5.

It is great to finally have some news to report! It has been fun to get together with people with the Limousin connection once again.

The Juniors participated in the Maritime Junior Limousin Show 2022 on August 5th and 6th at Balamore Farm in Great Village. The details of that show can be found in a separate article in this magazine.

During that weekend, the Maritime Limousin Association met and welcomed some new directors: Kimberly Hiltz and Jevon Arnold from J&K Farm, and Ian Kittilsen from High Tide Limousin. We say good bye and thank you to Sandra Othberg who served as Treasurer for as long as any of us can remember.

windows, and despite the hot weather, it remained quite cool inside the whole weekend. There were four exhibitors with 20 Limousin present. The Limousin cattle did well in all classes of the open show, the junior show and the jackpot, and showed off their docility with their excellent behavior all weekend. The hospitality was wonderful – all beef exhibitors and their helpers were treated to breakfast and a delicious roast beef dinner on open show day. There was a great feeling of camaraderie in the barn with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. It was nice to see the juniors reconnect with each other as well.

Our juniors also had the opportunity to participate in an all-breeds junior show during the exhibition. With over 50 juniors involved, it was a fun weekend of judging, print marketing, showmanship and conformation. There was also an auctioneering competition which was very entertaining. Juniors donated items and then auctioned them off themselves on the mic to a supportive crowd with all funds going to the junior show expenses.

A special thank you to the Siddall family for organizing a great open show and junior show.

2 It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of Brad Annett on April 23, 2022 at the age of 53. Brad was a Canadian Limousin Association member and a past Alberta Limousin Association Director. His roots ran deep in the Limousin breed in both Ontario and Alberta. In 2007, he and his wife Jennifer fulfilled a dream by moving west from Ontario and establishing a purebred Limousin cattle herd, Dawn Valley Cattle Co., at Gunn, Alta. The Dawn Valley Cattle Co. Herd Dispersal sale took place on June 15, 2022 at Vold, Jones & Vold Auction Co. Ltd., Ponoka, Alta. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jennifer and the Annett family.

3 The CLA gives our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Jack Ward of High River, Alta. who passed away on April 29, 2022 at 91 years of age. In 1978, Jack became the 6th President of the CLA and in 2003 Jack and wife Eleanor received the CLA Award of Distinction. The CLA mourns the passing of Wilbur Stewart of Stewart Limousin, Stettler, Alta. on June 4, 2022. Wilbur Stewart was a name synonymous with the Limousin breed in Canada. He received the CLA Award of Distinction in 1998. Condolences are extended to Wilbur’s wife, Peggy, and his large family including Canadian Limousin Association members Murray and Bev Stewart, Tyler and Claire Stewart, Bryce and Annie Stewart, and Kallie Stewart. His legacy lives on with their continued Limousin breeding programs.

Advocacy is a big part of what we do and how we communicate recommendations to policymakers matters. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) takes a team approach, and we strive to share how the current and emerging issues can impact the various sectors within our industry. Our goal is to always bring workable solutions to government for their consideration.

With the Canadian Agriculture Partnership (CAP) set to expire within the next year, our board members and policy team have worked hard alongside our provincial members to advocate for enhancements to programming that would benefit cattle producers from across Canada.

We took every opportunity possible throughout the consultation process to share our ideas. Key policy priority areas that we focused on included business risk management (BRM), the environment, animal health, and research and innovation.

On July 22, 2022, Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) agriculture ministers announced $500 million in new funds for the Next Agricultural Policy Framework, to be known as the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This marks a 25 per cent increase from the previous Framework.

Here is a snapshot of the notable policies for Canadian cattle producers announced in Sustainable CAP:

BUSINESS RISK MANAGEMENT (BRM)

The BRM suite of programs is a critical piece of Sustainable CAP. The announced changes are intended to enhance sector resiliency, so that producers can better “anticipate, mitigate and respond to risks,” which is consistent with FPT Ministers’ “Guelph Statement” that was released in November 2021.

The AgriStability program remains a cornerstone of the BRM suite. The payment compensation rate was raised from 70 per cent to 80 per cent at an estimated cost of $72 million. The program’s payment trigger remains unchanged at 70 per cent and its payments cap out at $3 million. However, an increased compensation rate is a big step in the right direction and builds on the actions taken in March 2021 to drop the reference margin limit (RML). We are awaiting to hear details on the consultation process that will take place with industry on the review of AgriStability and how it can be improved to make it faster, simpler, and more predictable.

We were disappointed to see that making Livestock Price Insurance Program (LPIP) a nationally available, permanent program was not included in the initial Sustainable CAP framework. Attention must be paid to expanding the availability of LPIP and reducing associated premium costs, similar to what is done in other sectors. LPIP is an especially important tool in supporting our next generation of cattle producers, as it helps increase their ability to secure financing and survive market downturns. We will continue our advocacy efforts on this front.

An environmental objective has also been added to BRM programming. There is now an environmental cross-compliance component for larger farms wanting to participate in the AgriInvest program. In addition, further avenues will be explored to integrate climate risk and readiness into BRM programs. We are concerned this may make an already complex suite of programs even more complicated, which conflicts with the goal of simplifying AgriStability. CCA believes there are more effective and impactful ways to incentivize environmental stewardship on Canadian farms and ranches

MARKET REPORT

ENVIRONMENT

As cattle producers, we understand the importance of implementing best management practices on our farms and ranches. As a result, we have advocated for direct payments to primary producers for the Ecological Goods and Services (EG&S) we provide. We were pleased to see the announcement of the Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program (RALP), which comes with $250 million dollar investment and aims to provide incentives to agricultural producers for native grassland conservation efforts, perennial cover activities, and regenerative agricultural practices. The devil is in the details and the specifics of RALP remain unknown. In advance of the details being developed, CCA will advocate to ensure the program meets the intended objectives and benefits beef producers from across Canada.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

The 25 per cent increase in the funding envelope is welcome news for research and innovation in the sector. We have advocated for continued investments in research programs aimed not only at key environmental challenges, but also enhancing productivity are critical. This is a key ingredient to the success and sustainability of our sector.

The Canadian beef industry has identified aggressive 10-year industry goals and a national research and technology transfer strategy to achieve these goals. With an increased funding envelope, the beef sector will be better equipped to deliver on some of our ambitious environmental and productivity goals.

The Sustainable CAP announcement shows that the FPT agriculture ministers’ have heard our concerns on several key issues. We will continue to actively engage with government representatives on the rollout of this new policy framework and advocate for the addition of new initiatives including the critical and urgent need to establish a national Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine bank for Canada.

With the complexity of the issues relating to tackling climate change, ensuring food security, and ensuring a vibrant Canadian agriculture industry, the details of these commitments will be important. You can count on CCA to be at the table representing your interests and ensuring the best outcome possible for beef producers across Canada.

VACCINATING HINTS

Everyone can benefit to review this long list of practical tips and hints. I keep adding to this list over time, with both purebred and commercial sector producers in mind. Some carry serious consequences. I always say you all pay good money for vaccines and proper storage, mixing, administration and timing are critical to get the best response in your herd. Try and find the one or two points you can add in for the betterment of your herd. There are some implanting hints if you implant cull heifers and castrate cull bulls. If you don’t, simply ignore the implant hints.

It is good to have as complete a vaccination program as you can. Purebred breeders – I feel your commercial bull customers look up to you with what your herd health program is. This will vary a little bit depending on geographic location, management style and disease pressure with your herd.

VACCINE STORAGE

ɐ Store vaccine in the middle area of fridge, according to label, maintain chain of refrigeration. Check fridge temperature 3-7 degrees and maintain it. Keep thermometer in fridge. Don’t store vaccines in the door of the fridge.

ɐ

Use a cooler to keep cool in summer/warm in winter. Use ice packs to maintain 3-7 degrees in summer. Do not have ice packs directly in contact with vaccine. Keep vaccines from freezing using water bottles for syringes, heating pads or in car heaters. Keep vaccine in packaging until ready to use.

PREPARATION FOR PROCESSING

ɐ Prepare in advance - chute and alleyway working properly, no protruding or sharp bits, sliders working properly

ɐ Check expiry and withdrawal dates of products before usage. Water based vaccines 21 days withdrawal. Oil based vaccines 60 days slaughter withdrawal.

ɐ

Have emergency kit available stocked and labeled. Include epinephrine, dexamethasone, antihistamine, blood stopper, wound spray, etc.

ɐ

Minimize shots often no more than two will cover all the antigens.

ɐ

Double and triple check dosage of vaccines (i.e. Clostridials depending on the brand come in 2cc-5cc dosage) Critical to get the proper dosage.

ɐ

Use vaccines with as low a dose as possible.

ɐ Calibrate syringes, some self-calibrated.

ɐ Mix only enough modified vaccine to last 1-2 hours tops. Best to mix just as needed and use up before a long break (ie. lunch)

ɐ

Swirl modified live vaccine when rehydrating, don’t shake vigorously.

ɐ

Agitate killed vaccine to have a uniform mixture (ie. clostridial vaccines as well as products like safeguard suspension dewormer).

ɐ Have a sharps container and use it.

ɐ Select appropriate needle size. 16-18-19-20 depending on size and maturity of cattle and viscosity of product. As short as can to get under the skin for subcutaneous administration (5/8 to 1 inch)

ɐ

Syringes well maintained and cleaned with hot water, store in fridge or freezer after vaccinating for the day. One drop of cooking canola oil placed on the rubber o ring maintains sliding motion in repeater syringes.

ɐ

Don’t mix syringes up - label syringe for which product. (ie. coloured tape, coloured ball for end or write on the syringe).

PROCESSING PROCEDURES

ɐ

Properly restrain cattle (safer for cattle and administrator)

ɐ

Change needles every 10-20 head (when refill multidose

syringe) or when bent, burred, dirty or dull.

ɐ Inject subcutaneously wherever possible, neck preferable, behind elbow second choice or for show cattle.

ɐ Use the one-handed subcutaneous technique where ever possible to avoid hand or arm injuries in the chute.

ɐ Give at least a handbreadth apart with vaccines (high low or across from each other or alternative site) other side of neck preferable.

ɐ Antibiotics no more than 10 cc per site.

ɐ When in chute do as much as humanly or humanely possible to avoid another passage through the chute, as long as timing is appropriate. (ie. weigh, BCS, fecal testing, hair for DNA, other sampling. NSAIDs may be used if appropriate. Do whatever you can all together in each pass through the chute.)

ɐ Intranasal vaccines proper cannula and use oral products where possible to avoid needles.

ɐ Observe needle still on gun when you withdraw, record if needle is broken (VBP+) Always use needles with metal hubs.

ɐ Don’t disinfect the vaccine needles ever between animals. Only disinfect implant needles between uses.

ɐ Try to avoid vaccinating in the rain (potential for abscesses) or with branding - scalding.

ɐ Discard unused doses of vaccine.

IMPLANTING TIPS FOR NON-BREEDING CATTLE

ɐ Implant using a disinfectant tray and swipe the implant gun.

ɐ Insert the needle to the hub and pinch off the hole created when you withdraw the implant needles.

ɐ Don’t implant into dirt or manure and avoid area real close to ear tags.

ɐ Common issues with implants are missing implants, implanting into cartilage and abscesses from dirty technique.

ɐ Maintain implant gun and change needles when dull.

ɐ Set the implant gun and needle for the left or righthanded person.

With all products read and follow label directions. Recheck label especially if you change trade names of products. Double check dosage route of administration and any warning signs or precautions or contraindications. The labels are in fine print but deserve a review from time to time. Take the time to properly train new vaccinators and processors on your ranch, farm or feedlot. It is the most critical job as far as disease prevention is concerned. If following these steps one can assure you are giving the vaccines the best chance to give their maximal protection. You paid good money for vaccines and other products. Look after them.

All breeds do not need the same scrotal size, which means you can’t compare Limousin with other breeds because scrotal size will be different, and Limousin will need less scrotal size than other breeds to do the job.

Scrotal circumference is a trait which is moderately to highly heritable. Research indicates that testicle size is an excellent indicator of age at puberty of a sire's daughters and is also related to seminal quality and quantity.
