Carlow is one of the Irish Counties favoured by having much of its Celtic past largely undisturbed. This charming rural county may be small in stature, but it has without a doubt got a huge part to play in Irish history. So let’s wander back to bygone times with some snippets of the past... Carlow is an inland county surrounded on all sides by five other counties. In the north there is County Kildare, once known as Kings County, to the east there is County Wicklow and to the south east there is County Wexford. To the west there is County Kilkenny and to the northwest is County Laois and was also once know as Queens County. The River Slaney flows through its eastern part, which is an extension of the granite area of County Wicklow. West of this lies the fertile limestone land of the Barrow Valley, and beyond to the north-west is pleasant upland country.

hundred fragments of clay moulds were found, with several hundred more clay moulds found around the area.

Much earlier civilizations are said to have built the great Dolmen at Browne’s Hill and other notable specimens within the county. Excavations at the great stone fort of Rathgall just inside the Wicklow border have brought to light the sophisticated technology used by the Celts when making their

The coming of Christianity saw the development of the great religious site of Saint Mullins in an idyllic location on the River Barrow, north of New Ross. To this day St. Mullins is well worth a visit to see the beautiful ruins of the once great monastic settlement.

Carlow's original name, Ceatharlach, is thought to have originated from the Irish for 'Four Lakes', though there are some historians whom have evidence to dispute this. The history of the town can be traced to almost 4000 years ago. The first settlers to reach Ireland around 6000 BC left traces of their passing in the flint weapons and implements found along the Barrow valley. The legends of County Carlow began with the destruction of Dinn Righ, an immense hill fort near Leighlinbridge. This fort was, according to tradition

bronze weapons. Rathgall in Co Wicklow was home to a huge workshop where spears, swords and shields were crafted. An excavation in 1969 in Rathgall turned out to be the first "Later Bronze Age Workshop" located in Ireland. More than four

After the Norman Invasion, a great chieftain known as Art McMurrough Kavanagh became King of Leinster. He is said to have earned a reputation as the most feared fighting man in the country. He attacked the Norman forces so often that King Richard II came to Ireland personally to resolve the issue in 1394 and brought with him with an estimated 10,000 men. Eventually a treaty was agreed and King Richard II returned to England but he had barely touched English soil when Art McMurrough Kavanagh struck again and a series of bloody battles culminated in a peace engagement at Kellistown near Tullow where the King’s cousin, Roger

The castle remained largely intact until 1814 when it was mostly destroyed in an attempt to turn the building into a lunatic asylum. The present remains now are the West Wall with two of its cylindrical towers. Photo: Sarah 777 - Wikipedia - CC-BY-SA-3.0

Mortimer was routed and slain. In an absolute fury King Richard II returned to Ireland to defeat Art McMurrough Kavanagh but he inflicted defeat after defeat on the King’s forces.

OF CARLOW - The LIBERTY TREE MONUMENT in the town remembers these men and women who were buried in a pit across the Barrow in Craiguecullen in THE CROPPIES GRAVE.

Richard’s war in Ireland gave his enemies their chance to attack. Bolingbroke usurped England’s throne, the ill-fated Richard returned to his death and Art McMurrough Kavanagh of Borris won back his kingdom.

Between 1841 and 1881 the population of Carlow county fell by 40000, 1000 a year for 40 years.

Carlow County remained a total Gaelic enclave for centuries after this until the Cromwellian confiscation's of 1650, the later Penal Laws and the banishment of Gaelic Society. The early 17th Century saw Carlow under the control of the Earls of Desmond until 1650 when the town was taken by English Parliamentarian forces during the Cromwell Conquest. During the 18th Century the town flourished and served as a thriving market town. In 1798 came the outbreak of The Rebellion 600 United Irishmen and Civilians were slaughtered after an unsuccessful attempt at taking the town and this is known as THE BATTLE

Famine brought poverty, death and emigration however Carlow became the most gentrified county in Ireland with over 60 Grand Homes and Gardens. For some there were riches and wealth and the architecture is still evident and standing proud in Carlow today. The 19th century was also the era of the Great Railway Boom and the area and some of those based there greatly benefitted from it. The 20th Century saw the beginning of Industrialisation and Ireland’s first Sugar Beet factory opened in 1926 and contributed significantly to the local economy. Only a few minutes’ drive from Carlow town is the Brownshill Dolmen, boasting the largest capstone in Ireland, if not Europe. Carlow was also very much a military town in its past, because of its strategic positioning a fact which is reflected in the remains of the once masterful Carlow Castle. The River Barrow flows through the town, and forms the historic boundary between counties Laois and Carlow. The settlement of Carlow is thousands of years old and even pre-dates written Irish history.

The Carlow Farmers Market is on each Saturday from 9am to 2pm, and is located in the Potato Market, right in the centre of Carlow Town.

MERS FAR M

The market is located on the street close to the Dinn Rí complex and public car park.

Carlow Farmers Market

Carlow Farmers Market is considered unique in that it is one of a few authentic farmers markets where producers are all local, produce their own products and sell mainly their own produce. This market supports the local economy and provides opportunities for other food producers or farmers to set up small food businesses and meet the growing demand.

CAR LO

The market also acts as an added dimension for local tourism as the promotion of Ireland as a Food Island gains momentum. It provides the consumer with a community atmosphere which high street retailing cannot offer and it also gives small food producers and farmers a social dimension offering them the chance to meet, interact, share views and form a network.

KET

Carlow Farmers Market gives the consumer direct access to producers and the products they have on sale which ensures freshness and quality. With a growing concern amongst consumers for reducing carbon footprints and food miles along with consumer fears over traceability, animal welfare and environmental factors, buying direct from producers at Carlow Farmers Market will eliminate these concerns.

here is so much to see and do when you visit Carlow both within a short walking distance and across the expanding green countryside

Our location on the outskirts of the town offers guests an idyllic & peaceful setting but also allows guest to explore the town on foot with so much to see and do all within a short walking distance from the hotel. Carlow town is an ideal place for a wander, walk or a ramble. With no ups or downs, inclines or declines, climbs or descents the towns smooth, level, compact and pristine centre presents a perfect treat for a leisurely casual stroll. On leaving the “Talbot Hotel Carlow” stroll down Sleaty street and a short distance away on the right is “THE CROPPIES GRAVE” - a mass grave where the bodies of 600 people killed in the 1798 “BATTLE OF CARLOW” were buried and the site is commemorated with a replica high cross. Carefully crossing the road you can enter “THE TOWN PARK” or “GRAIGUECULLEN PARK” - a 12 acre park on the banks of the Barrow with a children’s playground and many pieces of public art sculpture. You can exit the park over the modern “MILLENIUM BRIDGE” or go back onto Maryborough Street and cross over the “WELLINGTON/GRAIGUECULLEN BRIDGE” - dating back to 1569 but greatly widened

and replaced in 1815. You are now in Carlow Town proper and standing on raised ground to the right, as if nodding in welcome, is “CARLOW CASTLE” - built in the 13th Century as a strategic fortress to protect the river crossing. The west wall and two towers still proudly stand having survived centuries of attacks. From here the choice of direction and destination is yours and be assured you will not get lost - plentiful signage and friendly accommodating locals will see to that … so off you go and be sure to visit:
