4 DAYS OF MUSIC, DANCE, NATURE, CRAFT AND SO MUCH MORE… A FESTIVAL FOR EVERYONE, OF EVERY AGE TO CELEBRATE AND VALUE AGEING, OLDER PEOPLE AND THE COMMUNITIES WE LIVE IN!

How do we stop people getting old?

How do we deal with the problem of an ageing society?

We don’t.

A farce.

We can’t change the inevitable fact that we’re all, each and every one of us getting older with every tick tock of the clock.

A bigger farce? High levels of social isolation, illness, poverty, letting people just sit alone, ‘Waiting for God.’

Problem?

That needs to stop.

Problem?

So that’s why we exist, but where are we now?

Well that comes down to words and opinions. Together as a society we need to stop seeing the problem. We need to see the advantage. They say youth is wasted on the young, but wisdom, skills and experience are wasted on the isolated, the underrepresented, the silent force within our towns. And that is what Ageing Well Torbay is going to change.

Together we need to stop it.

Funded by Big Lottery and working in partnership across the bay, we are getting stronger, meeting people, starting a little conversation every day. Giving help to plant, grow and harvest ideas. People, communities they’re our advantage.

Did you know half the population of Torbay are aged over fifty? That’s half... 1 in 2. Did you know ninety percent of the population of Torbay have a negative view of ageing? That’s nine tenths... 9 out of 10.

Torbay, the English Riviera. Home to pirates, cream teas, donkey rides on the beach, let’s not forget Fawlty Towers…

They say fortune favours the bold, but the richest societies embrace us all from the very young to the very old. In Torbay we are setting out to inspire society, to recognise, embrace and connect communities, to stop seeing a problem and instead celebrate the joy of ageing, the joy of growing old.

International Older

Peoples

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. The main aim of the day is to celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to society and the economy and to challenge negative attitudes.

This year International Older People’s day will be the official launch of Ageing Well Torbay, a 6 year, Big Lottery funded project to reduce social isolation amongst people over the age of 50. Ageing Well aims to reconnect communities across Brixham, Paignton and Torquay, so everyone can feel included and valued. People are living longer than ever before. It is estimated that 23% of the UK will be aged 65 and over by 2035. In Torbay over half of the population are already over the age of 50…

UK Older People’s Day is on 1st October every year to coincide with the UN International Day of Older Persons. The main aim of the day is to celebrate the many achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and the economy and to campaign to challenge negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes. None of us are getting any younger, so let’s join together on this special day and celebrate the joy of ageing!
