In & Around Hats off to Torbay knitters Age UK Torbay is delighted to announce that thanks to the fantastic efforts of their supporters, they have reached their total of 6,000 knitted hats for the second stage of the 2016-17 innocent drinks Big Knit campaign. This brings their total for the year to 12,000 hats, knitted since last September. Knitters throughout Torbay rose to the challenge, sending in hats of all shapes and designs. The hats will be placed on innocent smoothie bottles, which go on sale in shops from October. For every be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK will receive 25p to help keep older people warm and well. The Big Knit is a joint campaign between Age UK nationally and innocent drinks to help vulnerable older people. Helen Harman, CO of Age UK Torbay said: “The campaign has a national target of 2 million hats, so we are absolutely delighted to have contributed our target allocation of 12,000, which we couldn’t have done without the amazing support of our loyal knitters. As well as local groups such as The Cabbage Patch Crafters, U3A Knit and Natter and our regular knitters knitting for us, we’ve even had hats sent in from people’s friends and relatives from as far afield as Australia and France. This means Age UK Torbay will receive a total of £3000 in 2016-17 from sales of the smoothies which will directly benefit vulnerable older people in Torbay. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, the campaign has raised vital
funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in winter through befriending visits, emergency cold weather support, warm meals and other vital services. Carol Lemming, who co-ordinates the Big Knit at Age UK Torbay said: “We are fortunate to have a very loyal and committed group of knitters who have supported us during the Big Knit and we would like to thank all of them for their fantastic support. Age UK Torbay provides Home Support, Days Out, Befriending, Information, Advice, Advocacy and support for all over 50s living in Torbay. For more information contact 01803 555 181 or pop into their office at 12 Dendy Road, Paignton.

In & Around Shaping future Community Health and Wellbeing Services for children and young people in Devon Have your say - 13 July–15 September 2017 The contracts to provide services for children and young people in Devon are due to be renewed from 1 April 2019. This provides an opportunity over the coming months to review and improve the system of care and support available to children and young people across Devon. Services range from those that all children and young people come into contact with at some point including health visiting and school nursing, services to support those with mental health issues and services for children and young people with additional or special needs (up to the age of 25). Between 13 July and 15 September, we are seeking the views of children and young people, parents, carers, professionals that work with children and those that refer into services to further inform our proposals. We are running an online survey on the general proposals but we’d also like to hear about people’s experiences about specific services.
8
We are aiming to speak to and hear from people directly through existing groups and events, like yours. Please let me (laura.voisey@nhs.net) know if: • You are able to publicise the online survey with the contacts in your network / group members and which other organisations/groups you share this with so we can map how far it has been publicised and how. • You have any groups or events that a member of my team can attend to discuss the proposals and gain people’s views. Click the link below to visit our website to view the engagement document (an Easyread version is also available) and access the survey (there is also a version for young people). https://www.newdevonccg.nhs.uk/yourccg/children-and-young-people-100144 Laura Voisey Engagement and Commissioning Coordinator South Devon & Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
Torbay News Artizan Solo Series Continues with Jewel Temple, an Exhibition of Paintings by Martin Bush (Torbay – 22 August 2017) Artizan Gallery will be holding a three-week solo exhibition for Royal William Yard Artist-in-Residence Martin Bush in September 2017. Martin has held the position of Artist-in-Residence at the Royal William Yard in Plymouth for over twelve years, having had a successful career as a commercial artist, and creates vibrant abstract oil paintings. He lists Gerhardt Richter, Jackson Pollock, and Howard Hodgkin among the artists whose work inspires him. As a commercial artist, Martin Bush produced murals and interior décor projects for restaurants, pubs, and hotels in and around Oxford. A year living in Thailand in the late 1990s led to a shift in focus and Martin discovered his passion for painting abstract works in oils and acrylics, stating that he found the courage to leap into the artistic unknown whilst rediscovering himself. Having adopted Thailand as his second home, Martin goes back to Thailand every year to ‘recharge’ his artistic batteries.
‘After my many trips to my second home I always love the serenity and spiritual moments I enjoy when visiting Temples in Thailand. My way of painting comes from within and as I have painted over the years I always liken my work to those joyous emotions I get when living life in this amazing culture. My latest work is a celebration of these visits especially to the magnificent Temples (known as Wots in Thai). Using gold leaf with a brightened palette of paint I sense the environment where people are calm and humbled by the surroundings within a Temple. Its stops you, takes away fears, pain, sadness and gives you a sense all around are with happiness, peace and tranquillity. I will be following this trail as I paint for a while......’
Jewel Temple 84x84cm Oil on Canvas. Martin Bush 2017 Jewel Temple will run from Friday 1st until Saturday 23rd September, with an Artist Preview from 6-8PM on Friday 1st September. The exhibition is curated and stewarded by Artizan Gallery - 7 Lucius Street, Torquay TQ2 5UW. For further information, please contact Julie Brandon at juliebrandon@artizangallery.co.uk or telephone 01803 428626. About Artizan Gallery Artizan Gallery was opened by Julie Brandon in 2014 in response to a 2012 ‘Open Space’ event which asked the question: “What is Torbay’s Cultural Future?”. Determined to nurture and contribute to the thriving artistic community in Torbay, Julie took inspiration from places like Birdwood House in Totnes and TAAG in Teignmouth, aiming to create an elegant and comfortable space to promote local artists’ talent. 2017 sees Artizan Gallery embarking on a bold new venture: the 2017 Solo Series will run throughout the year, with a focus on showcasing individual artists in month-long exhibitions.

AWT News Ageing Well Festival This year’s free Ageing Well Festival is going to involve an element of time travel, as we will be going back to the 1960’s! Along with a 60’s theme, there will also be a focus on health and wellbeing in the activities available on the day, which we will hopefully be able to reveal soon, as the steering group and festival team have been working nonstop to create an exciting, fun and inspiring programme of events for Saturday 30th of September, at Lupton House. So do make sure you keep an eye on our digital content, such as the Ageing Well Festival website (click here to visit)social media accounts like our Facebook page (available by clicking here) and our printed content, such as our newsletters (coming out in August!) programmes and leaflets (also coming soon), which you will be able to find in local libraries, some GP surgeries, and other community hotspots. If you’re interested in helping out at the Festival, there are several ways of doing so. One is joining our steering group! We’re looking for new members in their 50’s in particular, in order to ensure a more inclusive steering group in terms of representation. We are also looking for volunteers for the festival itself, so if you’d like to try your hand at stewarding, film-making, writing or photography for the day, please contact Hannah McGugan at hannah.mcgugan@torbaycdt. org.uk or phone 01803 212638 (please note, Hannah is only available Tuesdays and Thursdays)

AWT News Volunteering with Community Transport by Usha Garrattley, Community Builder for Ellacombe & Plainmoor Thoroughly enjoyed my day as a Passenger Assistant aboard the No 60 ‘Community’ Bus alongside Volunteer Minibus Driver Chris. As well as assisting passengers and operating the minibus door, I met and chatted with so many lovely people and felt privileged when some of them shared their life stories with me...Pam uses the No 60 every day at the moment. She doesn’t know what she would do without it... Her husband passed away suddenly on 2nd July. The No 60 bus enables her to get out and about but more important are the people on board the bus who feel like ‘family’. Chris, one of our Volunteer Minibus Driver remarked ‘Being a volunteer driver is very fulfilling because it enables me to meet people whilst providing them with a valued service. My experience has been to drive on the OurBus route 60, which is a DfT registered bus service, serving otherwise difficult to access parts of Torbay. Many of the passengers use the service daily, so firm acquaintances and friendships have been made. Adding to the diversity, the route also carries visitors to the Bay, coming from other parts of the UK, European countries, USA, Canada and further afield. Driving as a volunteer also, of course, offers me the pleasures of driving vehicles that I otherwise would not have access to! An all-together rewarding and worthwhile experience’ The Torbay Community Development Trust are currently looking for Volunteer Passenger Assistants which involves assisting passengers on their journey, helping with fares and operating the minibus door and for Volunteer Minibus Drivers for which a D1 license and 3 years driving experience are essential, however, full training and support will be provided. For more information on these volunteer positions, please contact Richard Bray by emailing richardbray@torbaycdt.org.uk, or phoning 01803 212638.

If you have any ideas on what would make this space be improved for the benefit of the community please do get in
touch, your ideas are what’s needed to make it work. In the name of community, do you have any ideas that would get people talking to each other more?
