Ageing Well Festival News This summer’s 50th anniversary of the launch of the Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album caught the Steering Group’s imagination and this year’s festival has a groovy 1960’s feel. Musical performances from artists including The Dukes, Planet Uke, Sandy Sparkle and the Carnaby Set will be taking place throughout the day, and there’ll be dance classes (Bollywood and Fijian dancing), and guided walks to get everyone moving. The South Devon Players’ “hippy-tent” should take everyone back to the “summer of love” – whilst the Torbay Mods’ Scooter collection will captivate everyone’s imagination. Opportunities for enhancing wellbeing through taster sessions of Tai Chi, Yoga and also Guided Meditation will be on hand. There will be a range of stalls, the chance to meet all the Ageing Well Projects in the ‘Bay, talks on the history and ghosts of Torbay, and also the chance to visit Dr Who’s Tardis and have your photo taken. With so much going on, there’s something for everyone, the young and the young at heart! Sue McDermott AWT Programme Manager said “it’s a great way to celebrate ageing, and many of our exhibitors and classes are being led by people over 50 – how inspiring is that?” Sarah Willmer is 62 and will be showcasing her “Egg Art”, and although her work is stunning, she has only recently taken up the craft. “I was diagnosed with ME last year which was pretty devastating and isolating. Through Shaun, a Wellbeing Co-ordinator I was introduced to a craft group - and after a short time I took up Egg Art, which allows me to focus on something other than

my health and has brought a whole new dimension to my life. Recently I was the featured Artist in the ‘Art of the Egg Shell’ magazine which just proves that an illness doesn’t mean you can’t achieve and have a fulfilling life.” Robin Kimling is 82 and a wellbeing guru and role model – he will be sharing the enjoyment of simple, standing exercises in a series of workshops for all ages and abilities, which improve vitality and mindfulness. Whereas the Club Franglais will be demonstrating that contrary to the popular saying, old dogs can and are learning new tricks. Meeting in a local café – Helen Brenton says “Le Club Franglais is bringing a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the Bay – it’s a place for anyone who is 50ish to 90-something, interested in French language, culture, food and wine, to forge new friendships, and keep their brains active by practising French.” There will be live broadcasts and interviews by Riviera FM and Sound Communities during the day. Also on Sunday 1st October at Lupton House, there will be an afternoon tea with the Vinyl Avengers, Cello Tones and Missin’ Tackle between 1.30 and 6pm.
