At the last meeting the group decided that these events would be monthly, alternating between afternoons and evenings. If you are planning to attend please let Peter know so he can monitor numbers. Also, please note that no refreshments will be laid on, but of course food and drink is available at the bar. Please also let Peter know if you have any access or other requirements. Ageing Well Torbay Update Ageing Well Torbay have recently completed their Participation Events around Torbay (more info in the featured article) meaning they’ve had a good chance to meet a lot of people around Torbay over the age of 50, and get their views on how AWT can improve ageing in the Bay. AWT will now begin collectingthe input from these events, and see how we can work on the feedback. AWT is now beginning to prepare for the upcoming Symposium, which will host a variety of talks and workshops, with an aim to share information, advice and skills with attendees which our steering group (whose members have been attending the previously mentioned Participation Events) have decided would be most relevant and of use to anyone over the age of 50. The Symposium will be on Saturday 6th May, at Torquay Central Church. More information about the event will be released soon. You can follow AWT on Facebook & Twitter, or visit the website www.ageingwelltorbay.com for all the latest news and updates.

Torbay News Teaching Children Good Hygiene Habits

Torbay Council’s Public Health Team is supporting Public Health England to encourage young children to be taught basic hygiene measures from a young age. Torbay’s Deputy Mayor and Executive Lead for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Derek Mills, said: “Preventing infections in the first place is key, and good hygiene can reduce the spread of disease and the reliance on medicines. “I strongly encourage that all children are taught the importance of good hygiene from a young age so that it becomes second nature to them as they grow up.” It is recommended that young children in nurseries and schools are taught factors such as the following: • How to wash and dry their hands properly - Damp hands spread more germs than dry hands • When they need to wash their hands – After using the toilet, the number of germs on your hands doubles!), and before preparing food, for example • Covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing - When you cough, germs can travel 3m if you do not use a tissue or your hand • To dispose of used tissues • How infections can be spread – There are around 10,000 and 10million bacteria on each hand! These simple hygiene steps, especially good hand washing, will help to prevent the spread of common infections and will reduce the need for antibiotics to be used if they become ill. For more information on how to teach children about good hygiene, visit http://www.e-bug.eu/beat-thebugs/

Torbay News Increase in Influenza Outbreaks There is widespread influenza, commonly known as flu, activity nationwide and so Torbay Council’s Public Health Team, in partnership with Public Health England, are warning people about the prevention methods and symptoms. Torbay’s Deputy Mayor and Executive Lead for Health and Wellbeing, Derek Mills, said: “It is important that we all look after ourselves at this time of year to prevent the spread of this illness. Please ensure that you get vaccinated if you are eligible and also take preventative measures to help keep yourself and others well.” The best protection for influenza is the annual influenza vaccination if you eligible for it. These individuals are likely to be people over the age of 65, pregnant women, young children, individuals with long term health conditions and main carers for elderly or disabled individuals. Some people are at greater risk of developing complications and becoming more seriously ill, these risk groups are: • People aged 65 years and older • Pregnant women • Young children under 5 years old • Individuals with long term health conditions Common influenza symptoms are: • A high temperature – greater or equal to 37.8°C • Cough ( with or without saliva or mucus) • Hoarseness • Nasal discharge or congestion • Shortness of breath • Sore throat • Wheezing • Sneezing It is important that the spreading of influenza is prevented as much as possible. There are several methods to do this: • Stay off of work/school until your temperature is normal and you feel well enough to return • Try to sneeze or cough into tissues and dispose of the tissues • Ensure your home or workplace is well stocked with liquid soap and paper towels. Alcohol hand rub/gel may be also be used as an additional prevention method • Regularly wash and dry your hands thoroughly, especially after sneezing or coughing • Ensure your home is thoroughly cleaned, if this is appropriate, using hot water and detergent. Particular attention should be given to all surfaces that are frequently handled (e.g. door handles, eating surfaces, toilet areas) • Do not visit elderly or vulnerable individuals if you suspect you are ill unless absolutely necessary For more information, visit http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Torbay News Act FAST Did you know that 1 in 4 Westcountry people would fail to call 999 when witnessing first signs of a stroke? While the majority of people (93%) would call 999 if they saw a stroke, a quarter (24%) of people incorrectly think that they need to see two or more signs of a stroke before making the call. 116,829 people on GP registers in the South West have had a stroke and there were 4,127 deaths caused by strokes in the area in 2015. Deputy Mayor and Councillor Derek Mills said: “The signs of a stroke are not always obvious to people and so that is why it is important to know the FAST test. It could make the difference to someone’s life.” As part of the campaign, new films being released will encourage everyone in the South West, whether they are a stranger in the street, a family member at home or the person themselves, not to hesitate and to make the call immediately when they see any one of the key stroke symptoms: • Face – Has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile? • Arms – Can they raise both their arms and keep them there? • Speech – Is their speech slurred? Additional symptoms of stroke and mini stroke can include: • Sudden loss of vision or blurred vision in one or both eyes • Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body • Sudden memory loss or confusion • Sudden dizziness, unsteadiness or a sudden fall, especially with any of the other symptoms For further information or interview bids, please contact Stephen Weatherill: Website: www.nhs.uk/actfast; Twitter: @ActFAST999; Facebook: www.facebook.com/ActFAST999 Public Health England Website: www.gov.uk/phe. We work directly with stroke survivors and their families and carers, with health and social care professionals and with scientists and researchers. We campaign to improve stroke care and support people to make the best recovery they can. We fund research to develop new treatments and ways of preventing stroke. Food For Thought by Matt Saunders Over the last few weeks, Ageing Well Torbay have been holding participation events in Paignton, Torquay and Brixham. These events have been held with the purpose of meeting with anyone in Torbay over the age of fifty, to hear first-hand what you thought would make ageing well in Torbay a better experience. We’ve had the opportunity to meet with over 300 people, who could give us an insight into the changes we need to make. At each of these events, we gave everybody a series of questions on various aspects of growing older in Torbay, such as “What would age-friendly housing mean to you?” “What would help you to fulfil your personal aspirations?” and “What would help you to feel connected to your friends and family?” These events have also worked as an opportunity for anyone attending to make new friends and connections, as we’ve already witnessed a lot of new bonds being forged over common interests. This has been a great thing to witness, as it helps the Ageing Well programme get closer to its ultimate aim of combating isolation amongst the 50+ community. Plus free lunches were provided for all attending, so there was that incentive to enjoy as well.

Feature These participation events have all been organised by Jess Slade (Ageing Well Torbay’s Participation Development Officer) and our Community Builders. They’ve ensured that we can reach out to members of each neighbourhood in Torbay, to enrich and support the ageing process with all our neighbours. Jess, the Community Builders, Volunteers and other members of the Ageing Well team have acted as facilitators at these events, getting into groups with anyone attending, to ask the previously mentioned questions, and lead discussions on the pros and cons of a later life here in Torbay. The responses were collected on post-it notes, so that either the attendees or facilitators could write their responses down, to be later typed up in a computer word document.

Facilitating is a really intriguing and integral part of this process, as we are carrying your thoughts, your voices, on to what’ll happen in the future with the project (obviously the attendees are the most crucial, most essential part of these events, as you’re who our project is about and for!). I facilitated with a group at Hookhills community centre, and it truly was a pleasure to find out more about you, to get to hear your perspectives on life in Torbay, and hold these discussions with you, especially when we had any answers that helped broaden our own world views. I recall the overall impression being that a major issue for you was matters concerning communication and awareness; where to find out what events were on, who could you contact in certain situations, why you’d like to help solve these issues for not only yourselves, but for friends, family and neighbours too. It’s been interested attendng multiple participation events: one at The Old Manor Inn in Paignton, one at Kenneth Court in Torquay, Hookhills Community Centre (Paignton, again) and another at Lupton House in Brixham, and more. Those four events had large turn-outs of 20+ people! It’s been so good to see these events are well attended, as it hopefully means that we can get a response that truly represents the majority of you who are aged 50+. These events have now unfortuantely ended, however don’t worry! You can email Jess at jessslade@torbaycdt.org.uk for more info, or keep an eye out for our “A Postcard for your Thoughts” in a variety of places around Torbay. They’re a freepost opportunity for you to tell us what you’d like to see change in Torbay!
