ull English anyone?….Community cafes, the hidden gems in our community. The Breakfast Club at the Windmill, the coffee bar at the Acorn and the Catch up Café at the Medway centre, all offer a place to meet friends, enjoy a very good value breakfast or lunch, or just a cup of coffee!

The Catch up Café run by local people who volunteer their time to provide a fantastic café offering breakfast or lunch for under £2.50 from 9.30-2pm on Wednesdays. With the added bonus of a table top sale where everything is 50p and a weekly raffle. Over the last year they have raised over £700 which goes back into the community. In December they put on a Christmas party for local families and donated £100 each to 1st Boy Scouts group and Watcombe Wanderers. Future plans include a trip out to the donkey sanctuary and an Easter party for children. The café is always busy, and there is always a warm welcome. It is a great place to meet people. New volunteers are always welcome too. The Breakfast Club at the Windmill is on Tuesday mornings from 9-11 and provides a full English for £2, child’s breakfast for £1, with as much tea and coffee as you can drink! The club is open to everyone and many families, single people and men working in the area are regular customers. Maureen says “ I have a good team of volunteers working in the kitchen, all have food safety certificates and like a good song, you have to have a good voice to work in my kitchen!” All money raised goes to the Windmill Kitchen fund which helps to provide kitchen equipment for the centre. The kitchen is an important asset to the community centre as many events and activities revolve around it. They also have charity support from ASDA who help to supply some of the food and Charity rep, Rachel also helps in the kitchen at busy times. Alongside the breakfast club there is also the foodbank and the Timebank, so it is a busy place to be on a Tuesday morning.

The Acorn Centre is opening its new state of the art coffee bar called the Pop in Cafe. Currently open on Mon Wed and Fri from 4pm -9pm as part of the youth club, serving real coffee, tea, shmoo milkshakes, toasted sandwiches, cheesy chips and paninis. Prices are kept low and there is a loyalty card system available. The café is run by volunteers and is starting slowly but have plans to open for a couple of hours every morning, so that parents can drop in after the school run for a coffee and a natter and workpeople from Tor 2 can pop in for a break... All profits made will go back into the Acorn centre. They are looking for more volunteers so if you fancy some work experience as a barista, then here is the opportunity! Contact Marilyn for more details of training.

What’s on We are very lucky to have 3 community centres in this area. The Acorn Centre in Barton, the Windmill Centre in Hele and the Medway Centre (formerly the Watcombe Centre) in Watcombe. We also have 2 adventure playgrounds, Woodend on Mincent Hill and Fort Apache off Pendennis Road in Hele. We also have several churches that are active in running groups and activities for all ages. Our friendly advice centre, Heles Angels on Hele Road can help with benefits, job finding, financial matters, housing issues etc as well as free use of computers and phones, if you need them.
