TCDT News Torbay Trustee’s Network meeting
What does ageing mean to you?
The next Trustees’ Network will take place on Wednesday 26th July, 6pm – 8pm, at the Chelston Manor. Attendance is free, but if you could let Peter know if you intend to attend, as that helps to keep an eye on numbers. Please let him know if you have any access or other requirements. The Torbay Trustees’ Network is an informal gathering of current trustees within Torbay (and their equivalents in Community Interest Companies and Social Enterprises- e.g. advisory board members) to share experiences and learning, seek advice and give and receive peer support. It is also a chance for people who are considering becoming trustees to meet others and find out what it’s all about. The Chelston Manor Old Mill Road Torquay TQ2 6HP Google Maps link (click me!) You can contact Peter by emailing peterstokes@ torbaycdt.org.uk or phoning 01803 212638.
What’s the first word you think of when you hear the word ‘ageing’? What would have the most impact on your life as you age? These are just two of the questions that the Design Council asked those who came along to their Transform Ageing events in the south-west of England at the end of May. From associations with ‘health’, ‘time’ and ‘freedom’ to ‘fears of isolation’ along with the celebration of being able to ‘say exactly what you think’, the responses are all heartfelt, surprising, honest and amusing. Have a listen by clicking here.

TCDT News Volunteer Management Charter - A Year later By Rachael MacLoughlin, Volunteer Centre Development Manager One year ago we launched the Torbay Volunteer Management Charter where we aimed to instil best practice by encouraging local voluntary groups to sign up and commit to a certain standard of volunteer management. This was developed in consultation with 17 groups in Torbay and we asked organisations to pledge to a series of seven commitments around recruiting and managing their volunteers in a positive and responsible way. At Torbay Community Development Trust we believe volunteering provides a vast and positive contribution to our community and our wider society. When managed well, the volunteering experience is mutually-rewarding for the organisation, the volunteer and the community. From October 2016 all organisations who advertise their volunteering opportunities through the Volunteer Centre had to sign the charter. This was to ensure all organisations we worked with were committed to the following: • Treating volunteers with respect, keeping them safe and supporting them within their roles • Following equality and diversity principles and ensuring volunteers are recruited fairly • Providing all volunteers with an induction, involving volunteers in their organisation and organising opportunities for volunteers to develop within their roles • Offering to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses • Recognising and rewarding the efforts of their volunteers • Resolving any difficulties or issues with volunteers promptly and fairly • Providing volunteers with a rewarding, mutually-beneficial experience 71 organisations have signed the charter so far, we hope by having the charter in place that both organisations we work with and their volunteers will feel proud to have signed it. With 71 groups on board so far, we are aiming to increase this number over the next couple of months to improve the volunteering experience for those kindly donating their time to good causes. We were delighted when Mairead MacAlinden, Chief Executive of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, signed the charter on their behalf. Sally Quail, Volunteer Services Coordinator said, ‘the Trust aims to provide a safe, supportive and positive experience for our volunteers as outlined in the Charter. We are aware that it has helped to raise the profile of volunteering in the Trust and support our good practice guidelines in the recruitment and management of volunteers.’ Another organisation committed to the above values are Bay Bouncers. Tammy Maguire said, ‘We love our volunteers and the club values their ongoing support in helping Bay to grow bigger and better.’
Bay Bouncers’ commitment to the charter can be demonstrated by Kim’s experience, who is a volunteer coach with the organisation: ’I am so happy to be able to help..to be able to volunteer makes me feel proud, proud I am able to offer young people a place to go where they can be active, learn new vital life skills whilst enjoying themselves and looking after their health.’ If anyone would like to find out more about volunteering then you can get in touch with the Volunteer Centre on 01803 212638 to book an informal appointment with an advisor. The opening times are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10am-4pm. During the appointment you can discuss your skills, interests and motivations for volunteering and one of our team can match you to a suitable opportunity in Torbay. In addition, the Volunteer Centre travel around Torbay delivering pop-ups with the aim of promoting the benefits of volunteering. They visit job centres, libraries, schools and supermarkets to highlight the fantastic work organisations deliver and how they involve volunteers in their work. If you would like to see a list of upcoming dates please visit our website. If you’re a local voluntary group or charity who would like further information about the charter please contact Rachael MacLoughlin on 01803 212638.
Feature News We asked, you spoke, we listened In May 2016 we asked our member groups across Torbay to let us know how we have been doing since we formed in 2014, via an online survey. In total 45 organisations responded, and we have been carefully considering the results of the survey, what they mean and how we learn from what you have told us. We have picked out some key lessons from your feedback, and they have formed the action plan which we have drawn up in order to try to improve how we work for the benefit of communities across Torbay. We will be updating this action plan quarterly to keep you informed of progress. The overall impression from the survey has been mainly positive. Several participants praised TCDT overall, acknowledging specific staff and projects in the process. Constructive criticism was a key area of feedback, which we can use for the purpose of improving our services and ensuring our changes reflect the needs and expectations of our members. An example of this was highlighting costs of support on a one-to-one scale, as this may prove to be a set-back for smaller, less established organisations, while update consistency in regards to news with particular services and mediums was another issue highlighted. Although our feedback included consistently negative responses from three participants, and therefore would seem like the sort of responses some would discard, we wanted to include this data in our overall results, in order to keep feedback truly representative of all our members, to create an accurate image of how everyone involved feels.

The question “How satisfied are you overall with the work of TCDT over the last year?” scored 6.8/10, and also had some promising comments. In & Around Nearly £500 raised to help older people in Torbay Age UK Torbay has been presented with a cheque for £499, following a successful Community Matters Campaign by Waitrose Torquay. Waitrose Torquay selected Age UK Torbay as one of three charities to benefit from their Community Matters box in the St Marychurch branch during the month of May. Shoppers were given tokens at the end of every shop, to place in one of three boxes to support the good cause of their choice. Helen Harman, the Age UK Torbay CO said: “We are absolutely delighted that Waitrose donated nearly £500. Age UK Torbay is committed to helping older people enjoy later life in Torbay. The funds donated by Waitrose Torquay will go towards helping us tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people in our community, via our befriending and careline services. We also hold various social events throughout the year which enable older people to get together, have fun, enjoy company and make friends. A cup of tea, a chat and laughter with a friendly face and a listening ear can make such a difference to older people. Carol Jackson, Community Champion, Waitrose Torquay said: “We were delighted to work with Age UK Torbay, it was a pleasure to see so many people supporting this worthwhile cause. Since the branch opened in June 2009, the branch has donated over £100,000 to good causes in the Torbay area chosen by the public. We must thank everyone who shops at our branch for their ongoing support”.
The Power of Three, an Exhibition of Paintings by Alan Gregory, Clare Jenkinson and Chris Pitman. (Torbay – 19 July 2017) Artizan Gallery will be holding a four-week group exhibition for three Teignbridge based artists (Alan Gregory, Clare Jenkinson and Chris Pitman) throughout August. Alan Gregory lives and works in Shaldon, Devon and has been drawing, painting and collecting art for many years. Having had a successful career as a senior academic, in 2014 he made the decision to work only part time to devote more of his life to his art. Having made that move, in 2016 he decided to become a full-time painter. His work is informed by the natural landscape, particularly the South Devon coastline with its ever-changing light conditions. Other landscapes that provide regular inspiration include those of rural Devon, North Mallorca and his native Wales “For me, painting is about helping the observer
appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and to celebrate the environment that surrounds them. But this beauty can sometimes be elusive, or not obvious at first glance, and it is this hidden element that I also seek to explore. This is particularly the case in my more abstract work. Whatever the subject, my intention is always to share the sense of feeling I have when looking at the landscapes from which I draw my inspiration. In this regard, I hope that my work reflects an emotional response to what I see.” Alan’s recent exhibitions include the “Botanical Inspirations” Exhibition at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter in May 2016, The North Street Gallery, Ashburton Christmas Exhibition in December 2016, and most recently, “The Observatory” Exhibition at The Forum, University of Exeter, June 2017.
Torbay News Clare Jenkinson has a background in textiles - specializing in carpet design for her B.A. - and began her career based in Kidderminster at the heart of the carpet industry. She now divides her time between designing for manufacturers and working as a fine artist. She has always had a love of drawing and went on to study botanical illustration at Birmingham University, founding the Birmingham Society of Botanical Artists with fellow students. The discipline of observational drawing underlies and informs both her design work and painting. “‘My paintings and drawings are a response to my surroundings and my place within them – the beautiful landscape of Devon where I live, the excitement of travelling to other places, the natural objects that are precious to each place. I paint collections of shells, flowers, insects, fungi and look for rhythm and pattern within both these and my larger work. I love working in oils, experimenting with the marks, textures and powerful colour that the medium can create, and also work in watercolour, devoting hours to a subject and using the smallest brushes. Part of the joy is the contrast between the two!” Recent exhibitions include “Botanical Inspirations” Exhibition at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter in May 2016, and SWAc in September 2016.
Summer Evening, Dart from Greenaway 46 x 61 cm Oil by Alan Gregory
15 years ago, Chris Pitman’s active lifestyle was terminated by serious illness forcing early retirement and a return to his hometown of Teignmouth. He took this opportunity to develop a transition from a professional life spent in design offices into channelling his creative instincts into visual expressions of the mesmerising environment surrounding him. He aspires to combine previously attained skills with mentoring from acclaimed artists, as well as immersing himself in the local areas burgeoning art environment. Using the distinctive lighting provided by the Teign Estuary’s East-West alignment, Chris presents a unique perspective with his mesmerising scenes of life in South Devon. He paints predominantly in oils and acrylics, but enjoys experimenting with other media, especially enjoying 3D work with clay. “I aspire to transform moors, hills, water, sand, buildings, and people into compelling scenes, finding a constant source of inspiration in the fluctuating light of the seasons.” Last Light 57.5 x 47 cm Oil on MDF by Chris Pitman
Since returning to Teignmouth He has won several awards from Teignmouth Art Society, He has had paintings accepted and hung at the South West Academy open exhibition for the last 2 years, and most recently was a finalist in the ‘SAA Artist of the Year 2017’. The Power of Three will run from Tuesday 1st until Tuesday 29th August, with an Artist Preview from 6-8PM on Saturday Estuary 68 x 58 cm Oil on Canvas by 5th August. AWT News Ageing Well Festival This year’s free Ageing Well Festival is going to involve an element of time travel, as we will be going back to the 1960’s! Along with a 60’s theme, there will also be a focus on health and wellbeing in the activities available on the day, which we will hopefully be able to reveal soon, as the steering group and festival team have been working nonstop to create an exciting, fun and inspiring programme of events for Saturday 30th of September, at Lupton House. So do make sure you keep an eye on our digital content, such as the Ageing Well Festival website (click here to visit)social media accounts like our Facebook page (available by clicking here) and our printed content, such as our newsletters (coming out in August!) programmes and leaflets (also coming soon), which you will be able to find in local libraries, some GP surgeries, and other community hotspots. AWT News Social Skittles by Joy Bastone
Our first skittles event was held at Boots and Laces Social Club at Plainmoor on Monday 15th May. We had an encouraging turn out and easily made two teams so we could have a friendly competition. For some players it was their first attempt at skittles and several people had played before. A variety of bowling styles were adopted, all equally valid, the only aim being to knock down as many pins as possible. Volunteers coped with “sticking up” and scoring and we set out on a most enjoyable game. We played 3 turns each and then had a short break. After the break most of us were slowing down, so we shortened the game to just another 2 turns. Usha was the only one to score a spare, and thus she also achieved the highest score. It was great fun and we are looking forward to our next event. We hope to encourage more players to join us, and that includes you, reader! The subs are £3 per head and this is refundable against a very good lunch or cooked breakfast. Our next game will be on Monday 24th July, meeting at 10.15 am at Boots and Laces again.

If you have any ideas on what would make this space be improved for the benefit of the community please do get in
touch, your ideas are what’s needed to make it work. In the name of community, do you have any ideas that would get people talking to each other more? Would you like to pull together something for your street? A soup sharing get together, or a walk, could even be a memory walk, or a neighbourhood photo exhibition. A clothes swap. A get together in a park, maybe doing a nature knowledge sharing event. The possibilities are endless, please do give me a call if you have any such inclinations. Funding News £72,000 of National Lottery Funding Awarded to Torbay good causes More than £72,000 of National Lottery funding was awarded to good causes in Torbay at a community event on Friday (30 June). 14 groups from across Torbay pitched their projects at a unique Dragons Den style event, where the audience, of around 40 people from the local community, voted for their favourites to secure vital funding. Nine projects were granted a total of £72,263.20 at the event held in Torquay, which was organised by the Big Lottery Fund and Torbay Community Development Trust. This was the first event in England where community members voted for local projects to receive funding from the Big Lottery Fund. The winning groups were Humanity Torbay, Friends of Fort Apache, Ellacombe Community Partnership, Grounded, Totally Teenagers, Play Torbay, Carers Aid Torbay, So-Fly CiC and Disabled Sailing Association. They each received between £3,000 and £10,000 to support their inspiring work in the local community. An additional £900 was awarded to Young at Heart, in a special award. The Big Lottery Fund have also offered continuing support to those projects whose bids were not successful.
“The event went extremely well, all the groups can be proud of their pitches on the night, which were very impressive. The public voted for a diverse range of projects of groups including those supporting older people, children and young people, the disabled, homeless and people in recovery, being successful. The event was exciting; though understandably a bit tense at times and the feedback we’ve received has been very positive. Pitch Your Project has been a very good way of getting the public involved in understanding the work of local community groups and how Big Lottery funding can be won to support their various causes.” Robin Causley, Community Development Advisor for Torbay Community Development Trust
To view the livestream footage recorded from the evening, you can either visit TCDT’S Facebook page by clicking here, or their Youtube channel by clicking here.
“It was very nerve-wracking, to be honest, but we are delighted, mostly for the carers. We are passionate about helping unpaid carers.” Pennie Evans, Manager for Carers Aid Torbay
